Results are in for the original ‘Best of Maui’ he votes are in and the results are tabulated. Get ready to learn about the best that Maui has to offer in dining, commercial activities, culture and the arts, shopping, lodging and discounts. Our Best of Maui contest, established in 1992, is the original survey that reveals the cream of the crop and local favorites. It’s the go-to guide for local residents and visitors alike, a true look into the businesses that make Maui shine. With more than 40 categories, this survey will tell you who serves the best appetizer, who has the best happy hour, who provides the best sea activity and much, much more. Check out a couple of new categories this year, including Best Fitness Club/Gym, Best Vacation Rental and Best Senior Discount. Ballots were accepted on paper and electronically, and the results found in this publication will remain posted at www.mauinews.com until next year’s edition comes out. We hope that you’ll refer to it again and again throughout the year as you hunt for the best burger, the best sushi, the best boutique and the best surf shop. You should know that when we tell businesses they’ve been voted “the best” in their category, they express deep gratitude for your support. They are thrilled

T

that their customers had an unforgettable experience, earning them your stamp of approval on our ballots. As for why you all participated, many expressed an overall appreciation for Maui and its abundance of delicious dining opportunities and fun adventures, as well as a desire to support local businesses. Read on for some thoughts from the voters: “We love voting for our favorite companies!” says Sandi Hamminic of Honolulu. “The best of everything on Maui is found at local establishments. Small businesses on Maui offer residents and visitors alike a true local flavor of our county and community,” says Marc Antosch of Paukukalo. “It’s Maui . . . everything is the best!” says Bud Pikrone of Wailea. “I have been visiting Maui for the past 17 years and when it’s time to leave this beautiful island and people, I literally start counting the days until my return,” says Laura Wallace of Scottsdale, Ariz. “I love Maui!” says Alexis Felicia of Honolulu. “Thankful every day to call Maui my home. From swimming in the clear, blue ocean waters to admiring the majesty of Haleakala, this island heals my body, mind and spirit! Maui continues to shine as ‘the greatest nature show on Earth!’ ” says Carol Minnich of Kihei.

Congratulations, Best of Maui drawing winners ere at The Maui News, we love that our readers get so excited each year to show their support for local businesses by voting for their favorites in the Best of Maui contest. As a thank you, we held a drawing to select four voters to each win a $100 gift card from some of Maui’s top businesses.

H

Mabel Domae of Kahului submitted her ballot just in the nick of time and won herself a gift card to Star Noodle in Lahaina. She’s a fan of the business and its sister restaurants and plans to take husband Toshi out to dinner. Born and raised on Maui, Domae likes to vote in the Best of Maui contest so that those visiting the island will have a handy guide to some of the best local spots. Makawao’s Joy Webster has participated in Best of Maui for as long as she can remember. This year, she takes home a gift certifi-

Mabel Domae cate to Mama’s Fish House in Kuau. “Mama’s has the best location on Maui,” she says. “Oh, that view.” As for casting her votes, Webster likes to show her support for local businesses and encourage others to visit “the new guys in town.” Koleka Kahoohalahala of Lahaina won a gift card to Tamura’s Fine Wines & Liquors. Lucky for her, the business carries her favorite brand of sake. “And I do love their poke, I love the selec-

tion,” she says. This was Kahoohalahala’s first time participating in The Maui News’ Best of Maui, and she enjoyed selecting her favorite restaurants, taking into consideration level of service, quality of food and personal experience. She’s used to sharing her favorite restaurants and activities through her work in sales at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa. “When I saw the list, I just thought that it would be nice to share what my preferences are and my dining experiences.”

Mandi Lyons

Kahului’s Mandi Lyons, who won a gift certificate to Foodland, works in marketing at Grand Wailea, so she loves the chance to show her support for Spa Grande and Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a. But she also likes participating in Best of Maui to help smaller businesses receive the recognition they deserve. Always one to be “out and about,” Lyons likes to seek out new experiences, especially when it comes to trying new restaurants. “I love to take my family dining through the island,” she says.

Thank you Maui

Maui Food Bank serves 10,000 people a month through partner agencies re you a dining diva? A man with the munchies? Then you know that Maui is a mecca for lavish restaurant meals with everything from salads to appetizers to entrees and desserts, as evidenced by this 2015 Best of Maui keepsake supplement. But many of us remain unaware that one in five Maui County kids may go to bed hungry tonight. The good news is, there is something we can do about it. In fact, the Maui Food Bank is once again the beneficiary of this year’s Best of Maui contest. Myriad voters who cast ballots have already generously donated cash or food to the organization. As an annual supporter of this noble nonprofit, The Maui News encourages readers to continue to step up to the plate for Maui Food Bank’s worthy cause — eliminating hunger. “During the weekend when school is out and there is no free or reduced lunch available, many children from low-income families do not have access to a hot meal or

How cool!’ We provide it to them on Friday and it goes home with them. They bring it back on Monday to be refilled by volunteers later in the week.” Inside the colorful packs are six meals for breakfast, lunch and dinPhoto courtesy Maui Food Bank ner for them to savor on Saturday Hands are outstretched in hunger, and an island paradise and Sunday. More than ever before, workingpoor families, seniors on fixed incomes and single parents are relying on the Maui Food Bank just to survive month to month,” concludes Yust about the efforts. BEST CHEF

Peter Merriman Merriman’s Restaurants e’s a man of many monikers. The Los Angeles Times pegged him the “pied piper of Hawaii Regional Cuisine.” He’s also known as the “original locavore,” an “acclaimed restaurateur” and an “advocate of fishers and farmers.” Heck, some ladies who work in his restaurants even tease him that he’s one of the “sexiest chefs in America.” Now, Peter Merriman is also “king of the kitchen” with his newest title of “Best Chef on Maui” as voted by you, the readers of The Maui News. “Wow! This is incredible,” says the seasoned chef. “Even a blind squirrel finds a little acorn once in awhile,” he says humbly, playing down his accomplishments with the classic saying about “dumb luck.” “No, really, I’m so stoked. I’m really happy. I didn’t know this was coming. I don’t do line cooking anymore. But I do still develop recipes for my restaurants.” And what restaurants they are. Spanning four islands, they include Merriman’s Fish House in Poipu, Kauai, and the more casual Merriman’s Gourmet Pizza and Burgers downstairs. On the Big Island, he’s got his signature Merriman’s Waimea in paniolo country. His Maui empire includes Merriman’s Kapalua in West Maui and Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea, both of which have won “Best Ambience” and “Best Happy Hour” respectively in this year’s contest. He’s a partner with TS Restaurants in the hugely popular Hula Grill Ka‘anapali, which just won “Best Appetizer.” And rumor has it he will open another spot in Kaanapali next year. As for Oahu, he’s got Monkeypod Ko Olina and Moku and Merriman’s will open in Kakaako.

BEST FROZEN TREAT

The Maui News / CHELSEA DUNCAN photo

Tasaka Guri Guri sort of spin on sherbet, guri guri is a sweet and cool treat ideal for a warm day. And the only place you’ll find it is at Tasaka Guri Guri at the Maui Mall. With a history that dates back more than 100 years, the family-owned business continues to serve up paper cups of the pineapple and strawberry dessert. The current generation, including sisters Cindy Tasaka-Ing and Gail Saito, who’s great-grandfather started the business after immigrating to Hawaii from Japan, maintains the secret recipe. The business passed into the sisters’ hands when their father, Henry, known as “The Guri Guri Man,” died in January. Tasaka-Ing attributes the treat’s enduring popularity to its reasonable price — two scoops will cost you $1.20 — and the fact that so many Maui residents grew up eating it and continue to bring their children and grandchildren.

Visitors from around the world brag about their meals there with photos on Facebook. It’s Sam Sato’s. This family-owned and operated business in Wailuku dishes out plate lunches, and fresh manju and turnovers. But noodles are king here, from the saimin and chow fun to the famous dry noodles. The dry noodle dish, also called dry mein, is one of the most popular items on the menu, says Kirk Toma, whose family has run the business since his grandfather Sam Sato started it up in Spreckelsville in 1933. A heaping serving of seasoned noodles is served dry in a saimin bowl with char-siu pork, garnished with green onions and bean sprouts. The dish also comes with a side of dashi, or broth, and spicy mustard. It’s the ultimate comfort food, full of local flavor and history.

BEST NEW RESTAURANT

Aria’s Restaurant & Catering ast year, Ka‘ana Kitchen reigned as the newbie king. Before that, Koa’s Seafood Grill, Alan Wong’s Amasia, Monkeypod Kitchen and Star Noodle ruled the roost in recent years. Now, the chart buster is Aria’s Restaurant & Catering, pegged the place that serves “local favorites with a Wailea flair at Wailuku prices,” by Kathy Collins in this newspaper. Chef Majic Carson and his brother Ed Carson, who runs the front of the house, are at the top of the heap, the kings of the hill, the top-drawer sensations who excel at what they do to make Aria’s the No. 1 new restaurant on Maui. Their partner is Stacy Fujiwara, who rocks with cold dishes and their signature desserts. “I would like to thank everyone on Maui who recognized what we do here,” says Majic. “I’m honored and humbled beyond words. It’s not just me — it’s about everybody who works here.” What makes Aria’s so unique? “Consistently excellent food, nicely and courteously served, and generous portions keep you coming back for more,” says Best of Maui voter Andrew Mahaney of Wailuku. As it turns out, the Carson brothers were born in Newport, R.I., where their grandmother Aria (after whom the new, awardwinning restaurant is named) was the main caterer for Gloria Vanderbilt Cooper at the famous Breakers. Doris Duke was also her client. “Mrs. Vanderbilt would dismiss the whole Breakers kitchen staff when they came to town and bring in my grandmother, grandfather, father and uncle to cook,” says Majic. “I grew up shining silverware in their mansions.” The brothers arrived on Maui many years ago and are veterans in the industry, having worked everywhere from Cafe O’Lei to Gannon’s to 5 Palms. They call their cuisine “Hawaiicano,” blending Latin, Mexican, Hawaiian and Pacific Rim flavors. Aria’s chef is Omar Acevedo. “Everyone grooves on the roasted beet and kale salad,” says Majic. “Followed by

Teddy’s Bigger Burgers ow much does Maui love Teddy’s Bigger Burgers? Enough to give the Lahaina franchise the Best Burger designation two years in a row. And enough to get those burgers served beyond the west side. Requests from customers wanting another location on the island led the business to roll out a food truck that will be visiting Kihei, Kahului and Upcountry areas. “We’ll actually be bringing Maui News’ best burger to a neighborhood near you,” says Henry Telles, who owns the business with wife Lisa and partnered with brother Gil on the truck. BEST RESTAURANT OVERALL

Mama’s Fish House t’s a love story, pure and simple. We adore the lobster guacamole. Get weak over the wasabi-crusted calamari and have a crush on the crisp mahimahi roll with Hamakua mushroom sauce. And that’s just for starters. We are also fond of the fresh ahi caught by Henry Pascher in the Alenuihaha Channel, seared in a Hana ginger-panko crust with kalua-pig fried rice; enchanted by the ehu, caught by Kalani Hirata in deep reefs near Lanai; and mesmerized by the mahimahi caught by Mike Fisher, stuffed with lobster and crab and baked in a macadamia-nut crust. Yes, we are infatuated with and devoted to Mama’s Fish House, marveling over its many facets to catapult it once again to the No. 1 Maui position for a repeat win as “Best Restaurant Overall.” “The flavors, the food, the service, the setting are the perfect Hawaiian feast rolled into one special meal,” says Barbara LaMarco of Makawao. Besides the award-winning seafood cuisine and wine list, Mama’s Fish House tugs at our heartstrings because of its warm and gracious service and its amorous ambience. Picture perfect, it’s situated on the spectacular north shore of Maui in an idyllic oceanfront coconut grove, providing an exceptional romantic dining experience that keeps you hankering to return. “We really are the result of the passion of two people,” says Vice President Karen Christenson about her parents and restaurant owners, Floyd and Doris Christenson. “They had a very clear vision of what they wanted to create and have never in 43 years laid

Polli’s Mexican Restaurant ■ Best Mexican: Several stellar new Mexican restaurants have opened on Maui recently— from Frida’s Mexican Beach House and Sangrita Grill + Cantina in West Maui to Roasted Chiles in Kihei — yet the one that rises like crema fresca to the top is Polli’s Mexican Restaurant, a staple in Makawao for 34 years. Founded in 1981 by Polli Contreras Smith, who first delighted the island with her southof-the-border family recipes, the restaurant was purchased by Tim Ellison 10 years later. He grew up in the Virgin Islands, working at Sid’s Deli in the ’60s, where a sign out front read, “Come in and eat or we’ll both starve,” as Sid took in wayward kids and gave them jobs. Ellison hangs that same sign in front of Polli’s today, and he does it as a reminder that dining should be fun and enjoyable, too. “Aside from the food, Polli’s greatest asset is its staff,” says Ellison, who is freed up to travel. But having seen firsthand extreme poverty in Cambodia, he and his son have created a nonprofit to provide educational grants for students there. Find it at www.onedegreeforward.org. Then come and sip a top-shelf margarita and savor chips and salsa, stuffed tamale and enchiladas and top it off with flan. Ole! BEST SERVICE

Mama’s Fish House ama’s Fish House reigns as the queen of Maui’s dining scene as Best Overall Restaurant year after year. It’s also a given that it swims ahead of the school for consistent Best Seafood awards. But diners really hit the Mother Lode when they experience Mama’s because it excels in Best Service, too. An added bonus is that it gets repeated honorable mentions for Best Ambience. “At Mama’s, we strive to provide an exceptional romantic dining experience that is totally unique and totally Polynesian,” says Karen Christenson, vice president and daughter of founders Floyd and Doris Christenson. Indeed, the service starts even before you are seated. Pull up to the oceanfront valet stand and friendly car parkers greet you and answer any questions. Walk along the gecko-lined path and the smiling hostesses wearing vintage muumuu welcome you at the giant clam-shell desk. Why are they so happy, you wonder? All 350-plus employees are fed free meals each shift and they may soothe sore muscles in the air-conditioned break room that boasts a flatscreen TV and Internet access. “They all have such aloha and grace and ear-to-ear smiles,” says Christenson proudly about her staff. Once you are seated, servers will entice you with their verbal descriptions of the menu, which rotates up to two times a day, depending on what fish are being caught locally. If it’s a special occasion, you may call The Maui News / CARLA TRACY photo ahead and arrange for a lei. They may even Server Lani Doherty wears a smile and a vintage Hawaiian dress as she pours a squeeze the colorful ginger in the vase and Mama’s Manhattan cocktail from a martini shaker, classic with Templeton Rye ask if you wish to inhale the aroma. Floyd or an epic bottle of wine are brought to the table. Martinis are shaken and poured in front of you. Then an amuse bouche, or little taste of something special, is whisked in. Varying daily, it may be a Hamakua mushroom bisque. The team of ever-smiling professionals brings freshly baked breads from Maui’s ovens on a cutting board with butter. They deliver almond-scented hand towels on a cold day; and chilled, lemon-scented towels on a hot day. Want to try poi? It’s on the house with your entree and if you request it, the staff will be happy to oblige. How about a keepsake photo? They’ll assist you and pose as a photographer with your smartphone. Last but not least, they’ll offer complimentary haupia, or coconut pudding, as a “thank you” for adults; and Maui-made cookies for children, leaving you feeling pampered and pleased on your every whim.

General manager and baker Calvin Shibuya said the family-based business strives to win the Best Bakery title every year, valued by all of the employees and chief baker Ikuo Komoda, who while semi-retired, continues to impart his wisdom on all things baked. The business will mark its 100th anniversary next year, and Shibuya said he’s working on a “special surprise” for its valued customers. “This recognition as the best bakery on Maui represents a lot of hard work on the part of our workers, and also it represents support from the community,” he said. “And for that I’m grateful.”

BEST FOOD TRUCK

Maui Fresh Streatery ith a menu that changes every two weeks, Chef Kyle Kawakami of Maui Fresh Streatery knows how to keep customers coming back. In the mood for Latin, Italian, French or Vietnamese? Kawakami serves up these cuisines and more throughout the year from his gourmet food truck located at the Ilima Shell service station in Kahului from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The chef, who grew up in Kula, takes pride in using local ingredients to serve local residents, from Kumu Farms produce to Maui Cattle Co. beef. The freshest products help determine the schedule of rotating menus. Each menu includes French fries that match the current cuisine, like the carne asada-style fries for the Latin menu. In keeping with his community-mindedness, Kawakami donates tips from the tip jar to local causes. To track the food truck’s whereabouts and current offerings, follow it on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

BEST AMBIENCE

Merriman’s Kapalua eminiscent of dining on a yacht, Merriman’s Kapalua boasts an open-air interior swabbed to a lustrous sheen — much like a fancy ship’s parlor. Its location on the tip of a black-lava finger, with Pacific Ocean currents clipping past at so many knots, gives a feeling of sailing between Maui and the Neighbor Islands of Molokai and Lanai. With spectacular sunsets and up-close whale watching in season, the views can’t be beat. Then again, look to the side and pristine Kapalua Bay with sparkling white sand beaches kicks it up a notch. So does The Point, an ample outdoor deck area with an oceanfront lounge, cushy furniture, an herb garden, and shady umbrellas and fire pits, that is picture perfect for intimate gatherings.

BEST FITNESS CLUB/GYM

Anytime Fitness aving grown up in Upcountry Maui, Sean Higuchi can appreciate not having to drive down the hill for something he needs. He opened Anytime Fitness in Pukalani with that in mind, wanting to give the community a convenient place to get healthy and fit. Having recently celebrated two years in business, Higuchi is grateful for winning the Best Fitness Club/Gym title. He’s especially thankful for his members, who have praised the gym — the first Anytime Fitness franchise in Hawaii — for its convenient location, 24-hour accessibility, great customer service and cleanliness. The gym offers all the basics in terms of equipment, from cardio and strength-training to free weights and kettle bells. Small group exercise classes are also available. Perhaps the biggest news besides his Best of Maui win is that Higuchi plans to relocate the business to a larger facility in Kulamalu Town Center within a year. At the new location, he hopes to maintain the gym’s welcoming and comfortable atmosphere while adding the convenience of more space. “It is just a great slice of the whole community,” he says of the gym’s membership. “We have aunties and uncles working out next to the high schoolers, and that was kind of the goal.”

BEST CULTURAL PROGRAM

Maui Arts & Cultural Center ach year, the creative organizers behind the programs at Maui Arts & Cultural Center strive to touch the hearts and minds of Maui County residents, visitors and others throughout the world. Through live theater, dance, art, music and more, the MACC shares cultural meaning, beauty and inspiration. “The MACC’s work is important because we try to present programs and events that our community will enjoy, that they will be inspired by, that will stretch their imagination, and that will bring a better understanding of our community and world,” says Hokulani Holt, the organization’s cultural programs director. “In addition, when we take all that makes us special and inspiring elsewhere, we share what is great about our home with other parts of the world.” With the world-class facility’s work spanning the past two decades, the MACC’s influence on the community cannot be denied. It has once again captured the title of Best Cultural Program, and the MACC’s Schaefer International Gallery has again been named Best Art Gallery. Holt said she is humbled to know that the community appreciates the MACC’s work. She said there is no better place to experience a variety of cultures in a variety of ways, bringing artist and community together in a way that fosters understanding. “I also feel that we have brought the best of Hawaiian cultural artists and experiences to Maui,” she said. “We are then able to share the depth and breadth of Hawaiian culture. From traditional presentations to contemporary thought, these explorations through the arts are amazing to see.” Holt is proud of the programs the MACC has presented, with a few in particular standing out.

E

There’s the MAMo Wearable Art Show, an extension of the PA‘I Foundation’s Maoli Arts Month on Oahu. The Maui fashion show features island designers whose traditional-to-contemporary creations celebrate Hawaiian culture through patterns and designs seen in kapa and weaving, weaponry and tools, and tattoo and adornment. There was also the February performance by the award-winning family duo Kekuhi Keali‘ikanaka‘oleohaililani and Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole, descendants of the most prolific Hawaiian chanters of the 20th century; the presentation of Gary T. Kubota’s oneman play, “Legend of Ko‘olau”; and the screening of “Ola Na Iwi” and “Ka Ho‘ina,” both exploring the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and its effects on Hawaii and Hawaiians, as part of the MACC’s Heritage Film Festival series. A signature event is the annual Ku Mai Ka Hula Competition featuring halau from Hawaii and the Mainland. This year’s related events will be held Thursday through Saturday. The MACC also offers many free programs, including family-friendly movie screenings through Starry Night Cinema, ArT=Mixx social events that give the 21and-older crowd a chance to interact with artistic presentations, and the annual Ki Ho‘alu Guitar Festival and Maui Ukulele Festival. Holt said, looking forward, the MACC hopes to present opportunities for the community to come together and talk story about basic Hawaiian thoughts and philosophies. “The Maui Arts & Cultural Center provides a place for all of us to join together and experience so many different things,” she said. “I would like to encourage our community to try something new each year.

Schaefer International Gallery t Schaefer International Gallery, director Neida Bangerter seeks to create accessible exhibits that will allow people to have personal experiences with art that awaken their senses. “The connections to exhibit content are unlimited, whether we are looking at beautifully painted portraits or interactive installation,” she says of the gallery at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. “Sharing thoughts about what we see brings others into the conversation fold. The gallery is a conduit for us to connect and grow through the arts together.” One of her favorite exhibits this year was the sound installation combining inflatable blue pools of water and floating crockery by French artist and composer Celeste Boursier-Mougenot. The Schaefer Portrait Challenge also stands out year after year.
