elping people free the shackles of pain and return to the activities they love drives Frances Salvato’s sense of purpose. As the director of education at Maui School of Therapeutic Massage, Salvato has witnessed the sometimes miraculous results of targeted bodywork. Sam, for example, loved his daily end-to-end walks along Sugar Beach, but a pain in his lower back was making it more and more difficult. When his doctor told him he needed spinal fusion surgery, Sam balked and asked for time to think about it. At a community outreach event, Sam saw Maui School of Therapeutic Massage

students providing free massages. He asked the event supervisor if she could refer him to a professional, and that is how Sam came to Salvato. “Sam told me his health history and the prognosis from his doctor. He also said that he did not want surgery,” Salvato remembers. “He had seen his contemporaries go through similar procedures, resulting in their lifestyles changing from energetic to barely active. I shared with him stories about clients who had successful surgeries and how they used massage before and after surgery to achieve a quicker recovery time.”

her that he took his usual Sugar Beach walk, and he felt great. Four years later, Sam is still pain free and walking Sugar Beach. “He never had that back surgery,” says Salvato. On the other end of the spectrum, there was Joe — a healthy young man who injured his back powerlifting and became addicted to pain killers following surgery. “He struggled with his recovery for a long time,” Salvato recalls. “Each time he had a medical procedure done, and there were many, he would fall off the wagon.”

Fitting in with healthy times

A

By CATHERINE KENAR Special Sections Editor

nother New Year has arrived along with a slew of resolutions made about how to improve ourselves — our bodies, our minds and our circumstances. While improving our circumstances involves dealing with employment and interpersonal relationships — and another feature altogether — the bodies and minds part can be dealt with by joining the Maui Family YMCA in Kahului. As part of an organization that has been around since 1844, it has the know-how to get its members into shape. There are many fitness choices available, so why join the Y? For starters, the Y has programs and services for all ages and fitness levels. “We’re different from a gym,” explained Senior Program Director Jason Justus. “We feed everything — your body, your heart and your soul. “There is a sense of belonging here. We encourage the whole family to join the Y,” continued Justus. “There’s a family mentality here,” agreed Fitness Coordinator Jodi Birdsong-Ottman. “You come in and make friends so they know you; everyone at the front desk knows your name. You’re not just a number — and they really do know your name. “There’s a sense of welcoming here that is different from any other place I’ve been. It’s comfortable. Everyone accepts you. You’re not being judged and looked over,” added Birdsong-Ottman. The Y is constantly evolving, as well. For anyone who hasn’t been to the Y recently, you’d be amazed at the changes. It has kept the best things that they have been doing: It still offers child care for members, which makes it convenient for parents who want to get fit but have no one to look after their young children. Every second Friday of the month, “Date Night” is available for parents with keiki ages 2 to 12 years. Parents may drop the keiki off and enjoy a child-free date, while

Healthy body, mind and spirit ALEXA JUSTUS photo

Maui Family YMCA is an official Spinny location the Y staff provides fun and food. The youngest keiki must be potty-trained and completely out of diapers. The Y still has the best outdoor pool on Maui — 25 yards long and heated to an average temperature of 83 degrees — especially important during the winter months. Group fitness classes for adults remain a popular option. The Y offers instruction in the latest fitness buzz including SPINNING, Zumba, Cize dance and TRX, a new style of resistance program that uses your own body weight. There are a variety of yoga classes, a popular stretch class, Pilates and even a step aerobics class — “because members want their step.” The afterschool care programs help to keep children occupied in a safe, productive manner at five area elementary schools: Haiku, Kihei, Lihikai and Pomaika‘i in Kahului and Pu‘u Kukui in Wailuku. Additionally, for members as young as 6 to adult, the Y offers martial arts classes and guitar and ukulele classes. The ever-popular day camps — Camp Moana at Kahului YMCA, Camp Nalu at Kihei Elementary and,

seasonally, Camp One at Pomaika‘i Elementary — during school breaks makes sure children have somewhere to go for fun and engaging activities when school is not in session. Camp Keanae is the affordable cliff-top retreat run by the Y for small or large groups. It offers a variety of accommodations and amenities depending on individual needs. Kula Country Farms delivers fresh organic vegetables for members. Just fill out an order form that is available at the front desk, turn it in by Friday at 5 p.m. with cash or check, and your order is delivered to the Y the following Tuesday at 10 a.m. for you to pick up. For all new members, a fitness orientation is scheduled with Birdsong-Ottman who explains the facilities, gives an overview of classes and features available, and makes sure you understand the gym equipment and how to use it safely before beginning your fitness regimen.

Go beyond bodywork with Healing Catalyst’s Denise LaBarre

I

f you visit Healing Catalyst in Upcountry, you won’t get a conventional massage — you will get so much more. Practitioner Denise LaBarre employs a unique blend of massage, psychotherapy and traditional healing methods rolled into one therapeutic treatment approach. LaBarre, a universitytrained linguist with a background in psychology as well as a licensed massage therapist, uses her hands, her intuition and decades of skill and experience to translate the body’s messages for the mind. “I don’t do the healing,” she explains. “That’s up to your body and the divine. But I help you make connections on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels that catalyze deep and lasting healing.” Clients come to LaBarre’s Healing Catalyst with issues ranging from stress, joint problems and back pain to fibromyalgia, anxiety and depression. “Our bodies naturally use sensation and symptoms to communicate with us,”

Therapist Denise LaBarre (above) of Healing Catalyst. • Cover of her new book (left). LaBarre says of her healing philosophy. “But early on, we are taught to ignore our body’s messages and suppress unwanted emotions. At some point, the body begins to signal a back-log of suppressed or stuck emotional energy with physical problems. I help people reconnect internally to hear what their bodies have been trying to communicate through pain, illness and disease.” The results, LaBarre notes, are often fast and dramatic. “I’ve seen people resolve 10 years of knee pain or a long-held shoulder issue in a session or two,” she says.

In 2010, LaBarre published her book “Issues in Your Tissues: Heal Body and Emotion from the Inside Out.” The book, available at several Maui locations and from Amazon, has stories, cartoons and exercises that get readers back in their bodies to breathe better and make healing connections for themselves. “Your healing answers are just waiting for you to breathe in to them,” LaBarre writes. “What Denise (LaBarre) does in person is light years ahead of even what she describes in her book,” says client Ted Faught, who read the book and then booked a

session with her on Maui. “Maybe it was just exactly what I needed, but it felt like a light went on, and I hadn’t even realized my bulb was out. I am blown away and forever grateful.” Sessions generally start out resembling a traditional spa massage, then evolve into a customized treatment geared to the needs of a specific client. No two sessions look or feel the same, and

play and emotional release are important factors in many treatments. In fact, LaBarre prides herself on her ability to “hold safe space” and get her client’s inner child to come out and play. Her office is full of toys and it is not unusual for LaBarre to go outside with a client to jump on her huge trampoline or chop out years-old rage. LaBarre’s groundbreaking

order, and it’s fun!” A single tap class at the request of neighbors in 1986 blossomed into a career focused on dance and fitness. Held on a Monday night, that first class gave people something to look forward to after the weekend, Ridolfino remembers. Today Ridolfino teaches 27 dance/exercise classes a week between her Wailuku studio, Judy’s Gang, Inc., and Kaunoa Senior Center. “This is your hour,” Ridolfino says, regarding the popularity of her classes. “You don’t have to think about work or that eternal todo list when you escape into dance or exercise. It doesn’t matter if you want to be a performer or a ‘dancer for an hour,’ you feel great afterwards because you did something good for yourself.” Among Ridolfino’s regulars are seniors in their 90s who live full, independent lives because, she says, “they are smart enough to keep exercising.” A woman in Ridolfino’s stretch class is hitting the century mark next month, which sparked a little goodnatured gloating as Ridolfino says, “I can’t wait to say I have a 100-year-old student to prove all my theories correct!”

With a kayak from Valley Isle Marine Center ant to get your exercise while out on the ocean? Valley Isle Marine Center in Wailuku carries a full line of Ocean Kayaks that will let you make a splash in the water. “Kayaking raises your heart rate, it’s low impact and you get some resistance training, says Valley Isle Marine Center CEO Mark Tracy. “You are moving and breathing while you paddle. There’s a lot of abdominal benefits as you are twisting and bending. On the peddle side, you’re moving the biggest muscles of your body. The best part is, you can stop anytime and rest or even ratchet up the kayaking by going swimming. Valley Isle Marine Center

The Envy is a green and white slurry and the Surf is the blue and white slurry. There are also yellow- and fuschia-colored crafts and the Venus is stable, easy to transport and designed to accommodate a female center of gravity. “Ocean Kayaks was the manufacturer that invented the sit-on-top kayak concept and design back in 1971, says Tracy. “As opposed to sit-inside kayaks, as exemplified in the eskimo kayak, the sit on top is easy to use and safer.
