Nourish your heart with the right foods Diet plays a role in avoiding heart disease o one wants to hear from their doctors that they have joined the millions of people across the globe to be diagnosed with heart disease. The Heart Foundation reports that heart disease, which includes diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system and stroke, is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, affecting both men and women and most racial/ethnic groups. Many factors contribute to the development of heart disease, including smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Diet and whether a person is overweight or obese also can have a direct link to heart health. Diet, particularly for those with diabetes and poorly controlled blood sugar levels, is a major concern. A variety of foods are considered helpful for maintaining a strong and healthy heart and cardiovascular system, while others can contribute to conditions that may eventually lead to cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrest. Moderation enables a person to sample a little of everything, but not to make any one food a habit. The following are some foods to promote heart health and some foods you might want to avoid.

Find BALANCE SPIRIT

Small classes at Om Maui mean more attention for your goals
By Chelsea Duncan, Special Sections Editor
t Om Maui, finding balance isn’t only about perfecting that tricky yoga pose that keeps you teetering precariously on your mat. It’s about bringing harmony to mind, body and spirit. That’s why the studio in Pukalani offers a wide range of classes, including yoga, spinning, pilates, barre and other fitness modalities, intended to provide clients with an allaround approach to health. “Becca and I, we believe that we have to find balance in life,” says certified instructor Tai Souza, who owns the studio with partner Rebecca Jakeway, also a certified instructor. Jakeway calls the health and wellness opportunities available at Om Maui “functional training” that can help clients thrive. The two college-educated master trainers opened the business in 2010 at its original location on Makawao Avenue in Pukalani, having previously worked together as personal trainers at a gym. Their goal was to create an intimate, “hybrid” studio in an Upcountry setting where clients could receive personalized attention. In order to expand the services available to clients, Souza and Jakeway decided to move the business to a larger location. In November, they relocated from their one-room studio to a larger space in Kulamalu Town Center at 12 Kiopa‘a St., Suite 102. Souza and Jakeway can now work simultaneously with different clients in different rooms, and the new facility’s infrastructure has allowed them to add equipment for TRX suspension classes, along with a yoga rope wall. The business also offers the latest in Pilates equipment, including Reformers and Springboards, and will be expanding its massage services. The intimate and personalized approach to fitness remains Om Maui’s focus.

Nuts also are a filling source of protein and other healthy nutrients. • Whole grains: Whole grains contain complex carbohydrates for energy, as well as protein and fiber. Fiber can help scrub cholesterol from the blood, lowering bad cholesterol levels. • Fatty fish: Many cold-water, fatty fish, such as halibut, herring and salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are heart-healthy. Omega-3s also can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and some soy products. • Beans: Beans and other legumes are an excellent source of protein and can be a stand-in for meats that are high in saturated fat. Beans also contain cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber and folate, which can reduce blood homocystein levels. The Bean Institute reports that consuming beans may reduce cholesterol levels by roughly 6 to 10 percent. • Yogurt: Researchers in Japan found that yogurt may protect against gum disease. French fries are particularly bad because they are carbohydrates fried and then doused in salt. • Sausage: Processed meats have frequently earned a bad reputation among cardiologists, but sausage can be a big offender, due in large part to its high saturated fat content. • Red meats: Enjoying a steak is probably not as bad as eating a deep-fried brownie, but it’s best to limit red meat consumption to about 10 percent or less of your diet. Red meats can have a considerable amount of cholesterol, saturated fat and calories. • Added sugars: Sugar can increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Sugar often hides out in foods that you would not associate with the sweetener. School your body with UH Maui Fit
n an effort to keep meeting the needs of students, UH Maui Fit at University of Hawaii Maui College continues to adapt by adding new workout equipment and classes. With students expressing an interest in an “open gym” atmosphere, funding was allocated to begin acquiring new equipment for the facility that is also open to staff, faculty and the general public. Last summer, a squat rack, a bench press and various weights, treadmills, spin bikes and an elliptical were added. In December, the facility acquired a VersaClimber, a zero-impact, injury-free, total-body, functional training workout machine. A Concept2 rower machine has been added, and plans are in the works to hang more punching bags and install suspension training. Battle ropes, resistance bands, tires, stability balls and Bosu balance balls are also planned. Next month, a PowerMill

climber, along with a cable and strength multistationmultigym, will be added. “Our facility has transformed to a perfect fitness platform offering open-gym training combined with new and current equipment and convenient class times available throughout the day,” said fitness instructor Kru Brian Crespin. Along with the open-gym workout options, the facility offers traditional group classes such as RIPPED, Zumba, Pilates, yoga, Muay Thai, Boot Camp, Hit Fit and Freestyle Core, along with special classes such as CIZE, PiYo and INSANITY. High-level martial arts program such as Horizon Muay Thai are also run by professional coaches. “Classes are continuously redesigned to add variety in your workout to keep your body and mind guessing and stimulated,” Crespin said. Certified instructors incorporate the various equipment and machines as part of their
workouts to create a functional training session, and programs are tailored to teenagers and adults at all fitness levels. Student Life Coordinator Francine Ching said one thing that makes UH Maui Fit unique is how the facility has provided an opportunity for students to be involved, creating a sense of campus community that has increased the student participation rate. “In addition to student participation, the facility has also gained popularity in our community,” she said. “Our members and drop-ins consist of CEOs from financial institutions, DOE educators, county, state and federal employees, retirees, part-time Mainland/Maui residents, and our very own faculty and staff, to name a few.” Semester and monthly memberships are available at various rates for students, employees, seniors and other community members, with drop-in rates starting at $5.

FOLLOWING Instagram trainers dish on secrets to motivation The Associated Press
MIAMI — High-end fashion designers are launching workout lines, Soul Cycle classes are quickly booking up and fitness trainers have become rock stars apart from their celeb clientele. But with boutique fitness studios popping up everywhere and workout offerings from surfboard workouts to underwater bicycling, it can be a little daunting to find your groove and stick to it past the February chocolate danger zone. We asked some inspiring, hard-core trainers who have won legions of followers on Instagram for their secrets to staying motivated all year long.
Jeanette Jenkins
She’s the celebrity trainer behind Pink and Kelly Rowland’s banging post-baby bodies. Los Angeles-based fitness guru Jeanette Jenkins, 42, shares moves from her Hollywood Trainer Club to her 314,000 Instagram followers and is known for
double-duty moves that target multiple body parts at once. “A workout is an internal cleaning,” says Jenkins who says she feels like she can conquer anything after finishing a workout. Her daily workout videos (more than 200 of them) combine everything from cardio kickboxing and circuit training to yoga and Pilates so muscles never plateau. “Schedule your workouts into your smartphone or calendar every week just like any other important meeting and do not cancel on yourself. If it’s important to you then you will make it a priority.” (www.TheHollywood TrainerClub.com)

Yogi Rachel Brathen’s fitness tips are a little unusual, but what do you expect from a woman who spends sizable amounts of time hanging upside down and runs around her house with an adorable baby goat.

The Aruba-based yoga teacher suggests making a gratitude diary as important as daily workouts and green shakes. “Sometimes we get so caught up in what we want to change that we start seeing flaws instead of focusing on getting inspired to move and feel good. It’s so much easier to stick to an exercise routine when we appreciate what our bodies can do.” She starts every morning with hot water and lemon to stimulate her digestive system, turns up some music and powers through a 90minute yoga session, often beachside. Kayla Itsines
An army of 6,000 women showed up to squat and high jump alongside trainer Kayla Itsines in London last summer. Her app is the top health and fitness app on iTunes in several different countries. The 24-year-old from Adelaide, Australia, has spawned a devoted following online as women document their progress following her 12-week Bikini Body Guides. Itsines, who has 4.2 million Instagram followers, is known for getting some serious results thanks to grueling 28-minute high-intensity workouts. Focus on your own progress and don’t compare yourself to others, she advises. Find a workout that you love so you can make it a habit and make sure to change it up often. “Mixing it up can keep you focused and make sure your workout is always interesting.” (www.kaylaitsines.com)
Massy Arias
This Los Angeles-based trainer is seriously bad in all the right ways. The sweaty ab photos Massy Arias posts to her 1.9 million Instagram followers might seem untouchable (yes, that’s her side lunge jumping up a staircase) but her vulnerable struggles with depression are super motivating and, bonus, she also dishes out all her social media advice in English and Spanish. “It wasn’t until I started being more active and reli-
giously making exercise part of my lifestyle, that I started feeling more alive, alert, confident, happier and stronger mentally. The motivation to keep moving forward comes from places within myself that I do not want to go back to.” The 27-year-old’s MA30DAY Challenge workouts include everything from resistance training and yoga to high-intensity interval training and sprinting. She encourages followers to set realistic goals instead of trying to change everything overnight. “Going in with this mentality usually demotivates people because they start a regimen that is too hard for their fitness level to maintain and keep up with.” (www.massyarias.com)

Stress Continued from Page 6 Poll, which asked more than 3,000 participants about their issues with stress. Sixty-four percent said money was a somewhat or very significant source of stress, and that number was even higher for parents (77 percent). Survey respondents also noted that work is a significant source of stress. Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s long-term health and improve their presentday quality of life. • Develop a support network. Speaking about problems with trusted friends and family members can be an effective way to combat stress. The APA study
found that participants who reported having an emotional support network reported lower stress levels than those who had no such networks to rely on. Try to overcome any reticence you might have about speaking about your stress to a close friend or trusted relative on those days when stress seems overwhelming. • Get more exercise. Routine exercise is another healthy way to combat stress. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, studies have shown that exercise can reduce fatigue, improve alertness and concentration and enhance overall cognitive function. Those are considerable benefits to people dealing with elevated levels of stress, which can contribute to both physical and mental fatigue and negative-
Focused breathing can help promote calmness and reduce stress ly impact one’s ability to concentrate. Studies also have shown that regular exercise can decrease tension, which tends to increase as stress levels rise, and elevate
and help to stabilize mood, which often decreases as stress levels increase. • Don’t lean on alcohol after stressful days. Many people respond to stressful days
by consuming alcohol. While alcohol helps some people forget a stressful day, it also produces psychological and physiological side effects that can compound the
effects of the very stress drinkers are looking to relieve. People who drink to alleviate stress may only be doing more harm with each drink, so find a way to cope with stress that has a more positive impact on both your body and mind than that produced by alcohol. • Breathe deeply. The American Institute of Stress notes that focused breathing is a relaxation response that stimulates the nervous system and promotes a sense of calmness. Deep breathing can combat stress, lower blood pressure and draw your attention away from those things that are causing your stress. Visit www. stress.org to learn about deep breathing exercises. Stress is a fact of life for many people. But while stress may be inevitable, it can be overcome.
