MAUIAN OPENS STATE’S 1ST ANYTIME FITNESS IN THE HEART OF UPCOUNTRY
[
By KEHAULANI CERIZO Special Sections Editor PUKALANI
ealth and home just got a little closer when Anytime Fitness, Maui’s newest gym, opened its doors in Pukalani. The comfortable facility allows Upcountry residents to stay in the area for all their fitness needs. Gone are the days of driving down Haleakala hill for classes, treadmills, free weights and personal training. “The things we try to emphasize is number one: the convenience factor. We didn’t feel like we had to go downtown, and people can come Higuchi whenever they want,” said Sean Ky Higuchi, owner and certified trainer. “Also, we created an atmosphere that’s good for everyone. Just the other day we had college-age kids working out, and right next to them was Barbara, our 80-year-old member, and it’s not like there’s any awkwardness . . . it’s everybody’s neighborhood gym.” Anytime Fitness, with more than 2,000 locations around the world, stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Traditional gyms are staffed, operating during specific hours. Instead, AF allows member access around the clock via keyless locks; and one membership covers gyms in all locations. Continuous video security monitoring and personal devices with one-touch access to emergency care promote a safe environment. The Maui spot is the first Anytime Fitness in Hawaii. It opened in June in the former Cinemagic Building off Old Haleakala Highway. Four employees take turns staffing the gym during certain hours. All
are available seven days a week by appointment. Member Liane Kawasaki of Pukalani, who was recently working out during the day, joined the gym two months ago and said she likes the fact that she can exercise based on her own schedule. Also, “it’s clean, new and close by,” she said. “Everyone is really nice.” Pukalani’s fresh, vibrant colors create an inviting and energizing atmosphere. Equipment ranges from treadmills and elliptical machines, to free weights and squat racks, to yoga mats, kettlebells and TRX bands. Multiple rooms flow together well, bringing a cohesive community feel that’s also well-organized. Weekly small group classes are listed on the bulletin board near the entrance; personal training is also available. Office Manager Lauren Plemel said Anytime Fitness Maui is a good fit for people of all fitness levels. “It’s for all ages,” she said. “We see people ranging from age 13 to 80. We coexist well together. It’s not intimidating.” Sean said the staff has worked to present an environment that’s welcoming for everyone, regardless of age or exercise experience. “When I envisioned opening a gym, obviously it’s fun to have the young guys who are excited to lift weights, but I also thought about who lives Upcountry: my parents, my aunties and uncles . . . I wanted those people to feel comfortable coming here,” he said. “I think we did a good job of creating that atmosphere.” The Maui native said it’s long been a dream to open a gym in his hometown of Pukalani. After graduating from Maui High School, he attended college in Tacoma, Wash.,

NEW WILLOW STREAM SPA FLOWS WITH INGREDIENTS OF THE ISLANDS
By KEHAULANI CERIZO Special Sections Editor
WAILEA — Be rejuvenated from head to toe with the beauty and benefits of Hawaii. At the Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui’s new Willow Stream Spa in Wailea, experts take special care to include Hawaii’s ingredients in a thoughtful selection of treatments and products. Visitors and residents will embark on a sensory journey through the island’s flora, fruits, earth deposits and waters — all of which inspire health and balance. Director of Spa Paola Perin said Willow Stream, the award-winning signature spa brand of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, blends luxury with local environments at each property. The Maui spa, which underwent $8 million in upgrades and doubled in size, offers an exciting chance to present the island’s rich colors, design and healing properties.
“We want the guests to just feel and experience the benefits,” said Perin, who worked with Fairmont Kea Lani’s cultural adviser and others to derive the locally-inspired treatments and facility design. “A lot of people don’t know about these products when they leave Maui or if they’ve come here before. It’s really understanding and feeling these ingredients during the treatment.” Ti leaf. Kawa. Awapuhi. Kukui nut. Alaea salt. Hawaii’s natural healers are showcased at Willow Stream, and spa guests will leave with an authentic experience that combines sophistication, tradition, science and nature. Even the products were selected with care. Willow Stream offers ‘Ala Lani Bath and Body, a Maui-based, family-owned company, which promotes health through hand-crafted products from pure Hawaiian ingredients.
Wailea’s Willow Stream Spa, which opened last month, features more than 9,000 square feet of 13 interior treatment rooms, eight manicure and pedicure locations, three outdoor spa cabanas and one makeup station. Treatments, massages, skin care, pampering and other services are designed for relief, restoration and results. Aside from the locally-inspired treatments, some of the standout spa features include state-of-the-art technology. A wave table, which will be open in early February, simulates the feeling of floating on water, enhancing relaxation. The therapist will use the bed to move and stretch the body, manipulating joints and tissues in a way that’s more fluid to the body’s movement, Perin said. “It will allow us to address concerns that we are not normally able to target in a treatment bed because we don’t have the ability to rotate. So that may be helpful for a golf swing to achieve flexibility and mobility.”
Find your energy
The K-Lift facial utilizes a trio of energy systems and is hailed by the spa as one of the most results-oriented, noninvasive treatments that can be found on the island. Experienced practitioners apply a 660-megahertz LED light to the face, which benefits cellular turnover and stimulates collagen production. Then, micro-enfusion allows product to penetrate a deeper layer of the tissue, allowing for optimal hydration and nutrient absorption. Finally, microcurrent technology is applied, which stimulates muscle fibers and yields a contouring effect. “This is the most noninvasive facial with the best results,” she said. “Everyone who has a facial with this machine says it’s the best.” Treatment rooms include the Nalu (Wave) Suite, with the state-of-the-art wave table; the Wailele (Waterfall) JOSH FLETCHER photos Suite, which offers Vichy Photos counterclockwise from top: The women’s Shower treatments; Aloha hydro area at new Willow Stream Spa offers experi(Love) Couples Suite with in-table sound/image thera- ence showers inspired by varieties of Maui rain and a warm palolo (mud) bar and foot bed. • Enjoy the comSee WILLOW STREAM forts of the co-ed lounge. • The nail salon will pamper on Page 6 guests. • The men’s sauna was recently unveiled.

ANYTIME FITNESS Continued from Page 3 where he received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He met and married his wife, Katie, and remained in Seattle for 15 years to manage area gyms. Sean said he had always wanted to move home, and he envisioned launching a small, independent gym once he returned. After getting a call from a friend, who had converted his Mainland gym to an Anytime Fitness, Sean did some research and said, “Everything about it made sense.” What appealed to him most, though, was the worklife balance. “That’s one of the biggest premises . . . it allows a work/life balance,” said Sean, who recently celebrated the first birthday of daughter Tori. Because gym operations aren’t reliant on staffing, it allows more flexibility when trainers come down with illnesses, or if the owners have to be away from the facility. “Because you are going to be happy and excited when you are here working at the gym, your members will know it, and they will be happy and excited. You can have a positive atmosphere here. . . . Our members feel it; our employees feel it.
