A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR ALAN M. ARAKAWA

October 5 - 8, 2017

On behalf of the people of the State of Hawai‘i, I extend a special aloha to all the attendees, participants, and supporters of the 95th Maui Fair. Fairgoers can look forward to four days of fun, food, family and friends. Returning for its 95th year, the Maui Fair has earned its status as a beloved island family tradition, continuing to attract thousands of local families and visitors to the Valley Isle each year. As Maui’s largest event, this year themed “The Greatest Things in Life,” guests can enjoy top-notched local entertainment, an array of local food, a diverse selection of multi-cultural food offerings, educational displays, a variety of games and rides offered by E.K. Fernandez, in addition to horticulture, livestock, homemaking, photo and art exhibitions, and competitions. I am confident that this year's Maui Fair will continue to bring families and friends together, offering something for everyone. Mahalo to the event coordinators, sponsors, participants, local businesses, and all of those who have contributed to the ongoing success of the Maui Fair. Together you have made the fair a timeless tradition that continues to unite the Maui community. Best wishes for the success of the 95th Maui Fair! With warmest regards, DAVID Y. IGE Governor, State of Hawai‘i

Aloha kakou For 95 years, the Maui Fair has been a favorite event for many of us and an important part of what makes Maui No Ka ‘Oi! This year’s Maui Fair theme, “Celebrating the Greatest Things in Life,” embodies the heart and soul of our community. This muchloved annual tradition has become a gathering place where family, friends and neighbors can enjoy all the Fair has to offer. There’s truly something for everyone, from the excitement of the parade to the ‘ono food, fun games, exhibits, thrilling rides and first-rate entertainment. Our County is grateful for the efforts of the many dedicated organizers and volunteers who put together such an exceptional event for all to enjoy. Mahalo nui loa to each of the Maui Fair sponsors for their tremendous support — without their commitment to our community, this timeless tradition would not be possible. See you at the Maui Fair!

awaii All-Stars cheerleading began in 2010. Kealii Molina is the owner and Head Coach of Hawaii AllStars and has a staff comprising of Michelle Sniffen and Halia Kekuewa who coach the youth and junior programs. The gym is based in Kahului and cheerleaders from all over the island and of all different ages cheer with us. In 2017 the Kaprincesses competed at the Athletic Championships where they won Grand Champion in their division. This is also where they won their fully-paid bid to The Summit. They also competed at the USA All-Star Championships in Anaheim, Calif. where they defended their championship title for the 7th year in a row. The Hawaii All-Stars Kaprincesses won The Summit Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL in May 2017. The Summit is the largest and most prestigious cheerleading championship

in the country. In order to compete at The Summit you must be invited by winning grand champion at a preliminary competition. Competitions happen all over the country and the Kaprincesses were lucky enough to win a fully-paid bid to The Summit Championships. The Kaprincesses have represented Hawaii at The Summit since 2013 when the elite level championship began. They placed 2nd twice before achieving their goal of winning the 2017 Summit Championship along with their 2017 Summit rings. “We are so happy to have represented Maui and the State of Hawaii in such a positive light. We hope to continue to bring success and recognition to our island and state. Thank you to the community of Maui that supports us in so many different ways.” — – Thank you, Kealii Molina and Hawaii All-Stars Kaprincesses

Orchidland at the Maui Fair

T

he brilliantly colored and varied presentations are the hallmark of World of Orchids which will be on display this year at the Maui Orchid Society’s “Orchidland” at the Maui Fair 2017. Don’t miss “the largest” and most beautiful display of colorful, exotic and orchid varieties on Maui. The display, represents five days of preparation and work, and will truly be a labor of love from the members of the Maui Orchid Society to the County of Maui. Be sure to stop by “Orchidland” in the War Memorial Gym and see the “flowering” of their love and labor. The orchids on display will be judged by a group of American Orchid Society certified judges and awarded prizes according to guidelines set up for each represented family of orchids being judged. Judging will take place the Wednesday morning before the fair. If you have questions regarding orchids

or orchid culture, information about some of the orchids will be posted in front of the different varieties of orchids, or our knowledgeable volunteers will be available to answer questions. Escorted tours can be arranged for those interested in learning more about the growth, care and information regarding the orchid family. Enjoy the beauty of the display, while you visit “Orchidland” and let a volunteer know if we may be of service.

Grounds Services

t the Maui Fair, Teens-On-Call / Teenforce students provide Grounds Services which include providing colorful 55 gallon rubbish barrels (with environmental artwork painted by area school students), plus recycling baskets … placing thru out Fairgrounds and maintaining during the four day event. “Our fairgoing — families are very good about placing their rubbish and recyclables into correct barrel / basket” according to Abezon Acosta, volunteerintern, and Ikaika Kaina, program crew leader. Teens-On-Call Recycle Program also provides these and other services for special events such as Wailuku First Fridays, numerous cultural festivals and outdoor concerts. “Reduce – Reuse – Recycle” has become a popular concept for people aware of the growing need to reduce landfill volume while converting ‘trash to cash’ or re-purpose of materials for further use. With this in mind, Teens-On-Call has operated a longtime ‘visitor-industry recycling program’ whereby adult supervisors conduct “elite dumpster mining opera-

tions” where large amounts of useful recyclables end-up from departing hotel visitors, “according to ‘recyclingguru’ Brian McCafferty. Teens-OnCall also conducts ‘house and property clean-ups’ for realtors plus construction site clean-ups, both which provide reusable household items and lumber! Household items are donated to those who need; and lumber is denailed / cleaned by students for re-use in future projects. “Our students save plenty lumber for reuse; learn safe use of hand tools; are paid an educational stipend and fed a good meal on all these recycling work skills training projects”, according to Keoki Raymond, Teenforce Building Trades Trainer. Mahalo to Maui Fair Alliance for student Grounds Service opportunities, and the MCCC work line for coming to fairgrounds each midnight to deep clean the entire site for the next day’s activities. Mahalo also to HC&S Plantation, Lowes and County of Maui for their assistance with helping us assemble the considerable materials necessary to carry out our mission at this very large and happy Ohana Maui Fair Event.

ach year, nearly 200 Maui County shutterbugs enter close to 500 photographs for judging, in three Divisions (Youth, Open, and Expert), and with three Categories in each Division (color, monochrome, and photo art). Competition is challenging, since the quality of the work is always so high. The MCC invites three, highly-respected professional photographers on the island to judge the entries, resulting in First, Second, and Third Place images (plus three Honorable Mentions) in each of the nine Division/Categories. Following judging, every entry gets ‘hung’ on the Photo Salon wall of the War Memorial Gym for the duration of the Fair. It’s a lot of work for the volunteers who help the Camera Club with everything from registration to pickup to hanging and takedown, but beautiful display makes it worthwhile. Join us again at the Fair this year to see the beautiful work of Maui’s camera artists. It’s one exhibit you won’t want to miss! For information, please visit the MCC website: MauiCameraClub.com.
