A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR ALAN M. ARAKAWA

Special Message from Governor Neil Abercrombie

Presented in Recognition of The Maui Fair “A Timeless Tradition” October 3 – 6, 2013

Aloha kakou — For over 90 years, the Maui Fair has been a favorite event for many of us and an important part of what has made Maui No Ka ‘Oi! The Maui Fair is an icon of family tradition and has become a beloved part of our island culture. The fair is a special place where there’s something for everyone, from the parade to the food, games, exhibits, rides and first-rate entertainment. The 91st Maui Fair theme, “A Timeless Tradition” reminds us of the fair’s beginnings in 1916. Our County is grateful for the efforts of dedicated organizers and volunteers who put together an exceptional event for all to enjoy. Mahalo nui loa to all of the Maui Fair sponsors for their tremendous support — their commitment to our community is truly appreciated. There is no better place than the Maui Fair to spend a weekend supporting local nonprofits, enjoying quality time with the family and seeing friends and neighbors.

On behalf of the people of the State of Hawai‘i, I extend a very warm aloha to all the attendees and supporters of the 91st Maui Fair. The Maui Fair has earned its status as an island family tradition, continuing to attract thousands of our local families and visitors to the Valley Isle each year. Attendees enjoy the entertainment, wide array of multi-cultural food options, displays, exhibits and a variety of games and rides offered by E.K. Fernandez. I am confident that this year the Maui Fair will continue to bring families and friends together from around the world to discover the magic that Maui has to offer. Mahalo to the event coordinators, sponsors, participants, local businesses and all of those that have contributed to the ongoing success of the Maui Fair. Together you have all made the Maui Fair truly a “timeless tradition” that continues to unite the Maui community. Best wishes to the success of the 91st Maui Fair!

See you at the Maui Fair!

With warmest regards,

ALAN M. ARAKAWA Mayor, County of Maui

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center

The rides. The music. And, oh, the food! Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center is proud to support one of our island’s most enduring traditions in its sponsorship of the Maui Fair. Our center appreciates the importance of tradition. Generations on Maui have made us a place to gather, be entertained, eat and shop since we first opened in 1976. People remember the day Macy’s opened, watching as we added the south wing and erected the canopy, listening to Israel “Iz” Ka‘ano‘i Kamakawiwo‘ole when he first performed on our stage. And the center continues to evolve. This year Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center became the only shopping center on Maui to offer free Wi-Fi internet access, added “fast charge” electric vehicle chargers, and grew our Facebook family to more than 5,000. But even as we become part of new traditions in our community, we continue to honor the timeless ones, including the Maui Fair. Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center wishes you a memorable fair experience full of Maui traditions.

2013 Parade Grand Marshals aldwin Robotics was co-founded in August 2007 by three H.P. Baldwin High School teachers; Gary Suter, the Construction and Industrial Technology teacher, Steve Harmen, the Auto Shop and Mechanical Drawing teacher, and Hannibal Starbuck, the Physical Science and Physics teacher. The team started out with three teacher advisors, four engineering mentors from the community, and a core team of 10 students. Since then, the club has increased over 200 percent. The first year, the team had to overcome many challenges, but through teamwork and significant contributions from team members and advisors, a solid foundation was established. In March 2008, the team completed its first regional competition in Honolulu. Since then, Baldwin Robotics has competed in many regionals across the nation including the Oregon, Arizona, San Diego, and Los Angeles regionals. The team has also travelled to St. Louis, Mo. to compete in the World Championships. In 2010, Baldwin Robotics started a VEX Robotics program to provide another STEM related activity for students to participate in during the beginning of the school year. The team has since then competed in competitions across Hawaii. This year, Baldwin Robotics is now going into its sixth year of FIRST Robotics and its third year of VEX Robotics. In 2011, Baldwin Robotics, for the first time, won a VEX Robotics competition and competed in the VEX World Championship in Anaheim, Calif. Also, during

Grounds Services Teens-on-Call/Teen Force Super Recycle Program Reduce – Reuse – Recycle has become a popular slogan for people aware of the growing need to reduce landfill deposits, while recycling Trash into Cash and other positive uses. At the Maui Fair, Teens-on-Call students empty the colorful 55-gallon rubbish cans painted by other Maui school students with environmental messages, in collaboration with the Community Work Day Program. Recycle baskets are by each trash can. “Our fairgoing families are very good about placing recyclables in the baskets,” says Ikaika Kaina, Teenforce program assistant. Teenson-Call Super Recycle Program provides these services for other special events such as Wailuku First Friday, numerous cultural festivals, and a longtime visitor industry recycling program whereby designated Teenforce adult supervisors “conduct ‘mining’ operations at selected dumpsters where very large amounts of re-

cyclables end up from departing hotel visitors,” according to recycle ‘guru’ Brian McCafferty. “We also ‘mine’ and clean up construction sites, harvesting good amounts of reusable lumber which are ‘de-nailed’ by students and reused in building projects at our Paia Vocational School and baseyard site. “Our students are always paid a good educational stipend and are fed a good meal,” adds Keoki Raymond, Teenforce building trades trainer. Mahalo to the Maui Fair Alliance for student Grounds Service opportunities and to the MCCC work line for coming to the fairgrounds each midnight to deep clean the site for the next day’s activities! Aloha!
