Monsanto

Monsanto is a sustainable agriculture company dedicated to supporting farmers. We help empower farmers to produce more with a softer environmental footprint —conserving more of Earth’s natural resources such as water and energy, with fewer inputs. Our more than 1,000 employees in Hawaii strive to improve agricultural crops for farmers, who in turn work day in and day out to feed, clothe and provide energy to people around the globe. We strongly believe in being a good neighbor. We are proud to have been named one of the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces by Great Places to Work, and to have earned the VPP Star, OSHA’s highest safety designation. Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center The rides. The music. And, oh, the food!

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center is proud to support one of our island’s most enduring traditions in its sponsorship of the Maui Fair. Our center appreciates the importance of tradition. Generations on Maui have made us a place to gather, be entertained, eat and shop since we first opened in 1972. People remember the day Macy’s opened, watching as we built the south wing and erected our white canopy, listening to Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo‘ole when he first performed on our stage. And the center continues to evolve. Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center is the only shopping center on Maui to offer free WiFi internet access. We’ve added an electric vehicle charging station. In the past few months we’ve welcomed new additions to the ‘ohana such as Vans, Zumiez and Charlotte Russe. But even as we become part of new traditions in our community, we continue to honor the timeless ones, including the Maui Fair. Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center wishes you a memorable fair experience full of Maui traditions.

Special Fair celebrates 25 years

he Maui Fair will celebrate the 25th Annual Special Fair Day on T Friday, Oct. 3. The Special Fair Day

—the only event of its kind in Hawaii—is the time reserved for persons with disabilities, whose limitations preclude attendance at the Fair during regular operating hours, to have the opportunity to enjoy a slice of the Fab Fair experience. During the Special Fair time, selected rides and games, entertainment and a picnic lunch are available to the Special Guests free of charge. The Maui Fair, Hale Mahaolu, and donations from businesses and community organiza-

tions make this event possible. Space is limited. All special guest, aides and volunteers must be registered in advance to receive a badge pass to enter the gate on Special Fair Day. Registration is complete for this year’s Special Fair Day. Thank you to those who donate their time, talents and monetary support to make the Special Fair Day a successful event. We look forward to a wonderful 25th Annual Special Fair Day 2014. For more information, you may call the Special Fair Day line at 872-4130 or email mauispecialfair@gmail.com.

Teens-on-Call/Teen Force Super Recycle Program educe—Reuse—Recycle has become a popular slogan for people aware of the growing need to reduce landfill deposits, while recycling Trash into Cash and other positive uses. At the Maui Fair, Teens-on-Call students empty the colorful 55-gallon rubbish cans painted by other Maui school students with environmental messages, in collaboration with the Malama Maui Nui (formerly Community Work Day). Recycle baskets are by each trash can. “Our fair going families are very good about placing recyclables in the baskets,” says Ikaika Kaina, Teenforce program assistant. Teens-on-Call Super Recycle Program provides these services for other special events such as Wailuku First Friday, numerous cultural festivals, and a longtime visitor-industry recycling program whereby designated Teenforce adult supervisors “conduct ‘mining’ operations at selected

R

dumpsters where very large amounts of recyclables end up from departing hotel visitors” according to Brian McCafferty, Recycle Maniac, Teens-On-Call. “We also ‘mine’ and clean up construction sites, harvesting good amounts of reusable lumber which are ‘de-nailed’ by students and reused in building projects at our Paia Vocational School and base yard site.” “Our students are always paid a good educational stipend and are fed a good meal,” adds Keoki Raymond, Teenforce building trades trainer. easy feat at the Maui Fair, thanks to Malama Maui Nui’s Paint-A-Can competition! Each year, Malama Maui Nui (Community Work Day Program) distributes brightly colored 55-gallon barrels to participating schools and youth organizations for the students to decorate with environmental messages encouraging the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. With the paint sourced completely from Malama Maui Nui’s Paint Exchange program and the barrels donated by Hawaiian Cane & Sugar and Maui Oil Company, the Paint-A-Can competition emphasizes the importance of putting litter in its proper place, as well as promoting the creative reuse of materials. All barrels at the Fairgrounds will be accompanied by wire baskets for collecting recyclables like water bottles and soda cans.

Keeping recyclable material out of the trash can is one of the best ways to alleviate the burden on Maui County landfills. The best decorated Paint-A-Can barrels will be on display aboard Malama Maui Nui’s float at the Fair Parade on Thursday. Once the Fair closes, all the barrels will be distributed for use at Maui County and state parks. The Paint Exchange is a year-round service that offers a place for community members to drop off usable paint, which others can take free of charge. People may drop off their usable paint at the Malama Maui Nui baseyard Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. only; partially filled cans are accepted as long as the paint is still in good condition. People needing paint can visit the baseyard during the same office hours. For questions or more information, call Malama Maui Nui at 877-2524 or email info@cwdhawaii.org.
