In our multi-cultural community that deeply respects traditions, the 17th Annual Maui Matsuri offers a celebration of Japanese culture for all to enjoy. This annual event showcases our cultural heritage with the best of both old and new traditions alike. This year’s theme focuses on “Gaman” (quiet endurance), which means the acceptance of and ability to deal with life’s adversities. Gaman is also a reference to maintaining one’s dignity and honor with diligence and perseverance. Mahalo to the Maui Matsuri Event Co-Chairs Kay Fukumoto, Brian Nagami, Yuki Lei Sugimura, the Committee Chairs and all of the sponsors and donors who have helped support this wonderful festival. Enjoy Maui Matsuri festivities — A Variety show from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Binhi At Ani Community Center and Festival on Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m. at UH-Maui College courtyard. Jonathan Clark once again created the Maui Matsuri festival artwork, which features the kanji (Japanese character) for gaman. Jonathan’s design can be found on the event’s print media, and you can take it home yourself in the form of a t-shirt for purchase at Festival Central. Jonathan continues to reside in New York, where he recently completed his Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art at NYU. Since graduating, he has been balancing his time between his own studio work, gallery assistant work, and freelance graphic design, finding time to participate in the Hawai‘i National Parks 2016 Centennial Juried Exhibition held at the MACC last fall. As he continues to explore
new mediums and ways of thinking opened up to him through his experience in grad school, he maintains a close Gaman connection to Hawai‘i, and Maui in particular. The JCCH will share their free “make a fan” craft activity in the Kodomo Corner on May 6 festival day. They are also offering a limited festival book special — “Picture Bride Stories” written by Barbara Kawakami. A $40 book being offered for $35, the book debuted in 2016 and “Talk Story” sessions have been held on every island. The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui will be hosting the session this November so this book special allows readers to read the book prior to meeting the author Barbara Kawakami in person later this year. The spirit of “Gaman” is reflected in the strength of the young Japanese women who in the 1900s, left their families and homes, traveled across the Pacific Ocean to be married to strangers only known to them by photos. They suffered in silence being married to strangers, living in a new land, and working in the sugar plantations. They persevered to make better lives for themselves and ultimately their families. This book chronicles the journey of many such brides in Hawai‘i.

Maui Matsuri welcomes special guests
aui Matsuri is welcoming several guests from off-island this year. Be sure to review the Maui Matsuri schedule of events to find out what time you can find them on stage! Oahu-based Taiko Center of the Pacific will once again grace the Maui Matsuri festival stage. The school and performance group, founded by Kenny and Chizuko Endo in 1994, practices traditional and contemporary Japanese drumming. Kenny Endo is recognized as having been instrumental in popularizing taiko in the U.S. and drawing drummers to the islands to study the art form. His troupe will be performing “Edo Kotobuki Jishi,” the traditional Japanese lion dance from Edo — the former name of Tokyo during the Edo era (1603-1868). Indispensable during Japanese New Year celebrations, it is
also performed on auspicious occasions when people want to beckon good luck and good fortune. It is said that if you are bitten by the lion, you will have good luck, Lion dance and many like to entice the lion to bite them by offering flat bills of money! Kyle Chew, an active performer around Hawai‘i, joins Maui Matsuri on stage with his Japanese shakuhachi and shinobue flutes. Under the guidance of Grand Master Riley Lee, Kyle primarily focuses his studies on the traditional shakuhachi music know as Honkyoku. He has performed at numerous events through Maui, Kauai, and Oahu, including the Japanese Consulate in Honolulu as well as on the mainland. He was one of the organizers of the 2014 Kauai Shakuhachi

Festival, and also enjoys practicing shodo, Japanese calligraphy. Catch Yasu Ishida, a graduate of the Chavez Studio of Magic who came to the US from Ube, Japan after being inspired by the movie “Patch Adams” to become a hospital clown. Yasu was a resident magician at the Waikiki Aquarium, has performed for a summer with the Zany Umbrella Circus on a New York and Pittsburgh Tour, and is also the founding Artistic Director of the storytelling troupe Bento Rakugo. He can be found on the Entertainment Stage as well as instructing origami in Kodomo Corner and in the Exhibit Room. Origami difficulties ranging from basic folding for preschoolers to more advanced folding for high schoolers and older will be shared, as well as performing magic while roaming the festival. ver 115 years ago, Mitsuzo and Ayako Nagasako came to the islands to work in the sugar cane fields of Maui. They opened their first retail establishment, a candy shop, on Lahainaluna Road to generate extra income, utilizing Mitsuzo’s previous experience in Japan as an apprentice candy and cracker. In addition to selling from their storefront, the couple even delivered
treats to central Maui. Over time, their business evolved into a general store in 1952, relocated to the Lahaina Shopping Center in 1965, and then opened as Nagasako Supermarket where sons Masao and Takehiko had a 30 year run. Today, the third and fourth generation family members continue the family business through the operation of Nagasako Okazu-Ya Deli
and Nagasako General Store at the Old Lahaina Center. Over the course of over one-hundred years, the Nagasako family has built up a reputation for being generous and supportive of the community and going out of the way to help others. During the plantation era, they would visit camps, collect orders, and make deliveries; they allowed families to open
charge accounts so that those who were struggling could feed their families during tough times; and they donated candy and fruit to the annual Christmas Parade for Santa to pass out. The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui recognizes Nagasako Company Ltd. for their outstanding support of the community they have called home for over a century.

Scrips available for purchase
All food sales and kids’ games (excluding the free activities under Kodomo Corner) will be purchased by scrips. Festival T-shirt purchases may be made with cash and/or scrips. Scrips will be available for purchase ($1 per scrip) at the scrip booth located in the Food Booths area.
