Aloha kakou,

On behalf of the people of Maui County, it is indeed my great pleasure to welcome you to the 40th Annual Maui County Senior Fair. This year’s theme “Unleash the Power of Age”- highlights the many ways our seniors are achieving remarkable things in later life. Many older adults are experts in their fields, have years of valuable experience, and are using that knowledge to improve the lives of others. This Senior Fair is an opportunity to recognize our Kupuna and share their stories with the public. I invite you to take advantage of all the health and screening booths, ethnic foods, and arts and crafts provided by the various organizations and agencies who care so much for Maui County’s seniors.

Credit card approval is subject to meeting membership requirements and the credit worthiness of applicant. Prices, rates, program terms and conditions are subject to change without notice.

Special thanks go to the Maui County Office on Aging, the Department of Housing and Human Concerns, the many organizers, volunteers, and supporters who come together each year to honor our seniors through the Maui County Senior Fair. Best wishes for an enjoyable and successful event.

We’re Committed to Serving You …

‘Unleash the Power of Aging’ Aloha and Welcome to the 40th Annual Senior Fair! his year’s fair is once again produced by Maui Economic Opportunity Inc., and I know that MEO’s excellent preparation will make this event a positive highlight of your year! This year’s theme, “Unleash the Power of Aging,” reminds us of the incredible value of Deborah Arendale Maui County’s senior population. Wave bring incredible knowledge, unprecedented skill, and immense wisdom as resources to all of us in Maui County. We all know that the aging population is growing. In fact, before our next census, Maui County’s older folks will almost double in number! This has been referred to as “The Silver Tsunami.” However, the word “tsunami” has many negative associa-

else happens in a tsunami? Think of all of those brave and experienced surfers that live for the big waves. MCOA knows that in this aging boom, we have an incredible opportunity to acknowledge the “Silver Surfers”—those individuals that bring knowledge and wisdom, skills and passion who will reach out and contribute positively to our community. Our goal is to help these active “Silver Surfers” remain active and healthy for many years to come. In this publication, you will find several articles about exciting programs available to help you stay as healthy, active and involved as you would like. So, “surf’s up!” Let’s have a great Senior Fair as we focus on how we can best “Unleash the Power of Aging.” — Deborah Arendale Maui County Executive on Aging

a Hoaloha — Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a nonprofit organization whose volunteers N have been helping Maui’s seniors remain independ-

ent for more than 17 years. Executive Director Gerri Shapiro calls Na Hoaloha: “Match dot com for seniors.” Volunteers are carefully matched with seniors to create long-term relationships, providing services “from the heart.” “A few years ago I experienced severe health problems, and I asked for assistance to accompany me to medical appointments and shopping trips,” said client Pat Ross, regarding her Neighbors Helping Neighbors volunteer, Adele Rugg. “Adele helps me in every way. She is an incredible and dearly loved friend. I am so grateful for her in my life.” Na Hoaloha — Neighbors Helping Neighbors also provides “time out” for family caregivers to give them a break from taking care of their loved one. According to Brandi Gouveia: “I am the sole caregiver for my grandmother and my mother. Every Monday for two hours I get help. Debbie Rose watches my family members so I can have a break away from the 24-hour 7-dayper-week care I give. For these two hours I forget my responsibilities and let my body and head take a break. And it recharges my senses and relieves my stress.”

Caregiving is a growing trend

More than 65 million people in the United States provide care for chronically ill, disabled or aged family members or friends during any given year. Those 65 million people spend 20 hours a week providing that care. That care is valued at $375 billion a year, which is almost twice as much as is spent on homecare and nursing home services combined. American Society on Aging: www.asaging.org

comfort of their own homes for as long as possible. She enjoys working with people to help them achieve healthier lives. In the past, she has worked as a science and math teacher, as a case manager for children with disabilities, and most recently, as a high school counselor at Maui High School for 11 years. MCOA’s new case manager is Vicki Belluomini who transferred from Hawaii County Office on Aging where she was the program planner in charge of developing programs, writing grants and administering contracts. Prior to working in Aging, Vicki spent 15 years working as an Administrator, Clinician and Case Manager for at risk children and adolescents and their families. And the emotional rewards are endless for the volunteers as well. “I started volunteering with Eva several years ago. It started out where I was visiting her and taking her to doctor’s appointments and grocery shopping. Then we were including her in holiday gatherings as she became a part of our family. She is such a blessing to me and my family. I really feel God sent us this friendship.
