ou’re engaged to be married . . . congratulations! Now comes the time to plan the event. With so many options that Maui has to offer, selecting a venue for your wedding day can be overwhelming. Do you choose the beach at sunset option? Certainly that’s a popular and good idea, but if you’d like not to be sandblasted by afternoon wind kicking up the beach sand, you may want to look farther inland for a truly magical experience. Take a 20- to 30-minute ride from Central Maui and head Upcountry where the air is fresher, the greenery is plentiful and the location harkens back to a more elegant time. Just downhill from historic Makawao town or uphill from quaint, “hippified” Paia town, you will find a romantic manor home with breathtaking views of the rolling hills of Haleakala, the verdant

valleys of Mauna Kahalawai, aka the West Maui Mountains, and the visage of the Pacific Ocean along Maui’s majestic North Shore. Having just celebrated its 100th birthday last year, Kaluanui estate, which is home to the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center, may not be the first venue that comes to mind, but once you see it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it first. The main building alone is an architectural dream abundant with stuccoed archways, vine and flower festooned exterior stairways, a lattice-decorated portico, a reflecting pool, flowering gardens, a solarium and a stunning courtyard that offers a multitude of perfect photo opportunities. While many people may view veils as a symbol of purity and chastity, various sources indicate veils had a more prominent purpose. Cosmopolitan magazine indicates that veils first became popular in ancient Roman times, when brides were covered head-to-toe in a red sheet called a flammeum. The sheet was intended to scare off any evil spirits that might ruin the wedding. Veils eventually replaced the flammeum to disguise the bride from those naughty spirits. Veils also were used to hide brides’ faces from grooms in an era of arranged marriages when grooms had never seen their brides before their wedding days. We do so much work with the community, sometimes people come to a show and never realized the beauty of the property.” The Hui provides only the venue for your wedding. Fry is quick to encourage the hiring of one of Maui’s many talented wedding coordinators. “I’m not a coordinator, although I am happy to refer the couple to one,” Fry offers. “I don’t think people realize the importance of having a coordinator — if not for planning the whole wedding, at least for the day of. “Having your event here is something really nice because it supports the community,” concluded Frey. “We’re a nonprofit and rely on donations, grants, classes and fundraisers to support ourselves. We, in turn, offer

scholarships and school programs to kids.
