That frees up Dad for other roles in wedding planning. With some creativity, couples can find ways to incorporate the father of the bride into the festivities in even more productive ways.

opular movies and televisions shows give the impression that the job of the father of the bride in a wedding is ultimately about making sure the festivities are adequately funded. In the movies, fathers fret about the costs of everything from flowers to photos. But gone are the days when the father of the bride bankrolls his daughter’s entire wedding. Fresh air and stunning vistas sell the Hui By CATHERINE KENAR Special Sections Editor

ou’re engaged to be married . . . congratulations! Now comes the time to plan the event. With so many options that Maui has to offer, selecting a venue for your wedding day can be overwhelming. Do you choose the beach at sunset option? Certainly that’s a popular and good idea, but if you’d like not to be sandblasted by afternoon wind kicking up the beach sand, you may want to look farther inland for a truly magical experience. Take a 20- to 30-minute ride from Central Maui and head Upcountry where the air is fresher, the greenery is plentiful and the location harkens back to a more elegant time. Just downhill from historic Makawao town or uphill from quaint, “hippified” Paia town, you will find a romantic manor home with breathtaking views of the rolling hills of Haleakala, the verdant

valleys of Mauna Kahalawai, aka the West Maui Mountains, and the visage of the Pacific Ocean along Maui’s majestic North Shore. Having just celebrated its 100th birthday last year, Kaluanui estate, which is home to the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center, may not be the first venue that comes to mind, but once you see it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it first. The main building alone is an architectural dream abundant with stuccoed archways, vine and flower festooned exterior stairways, a lattice-decorated portico, a reflecting pool, flowering gardens, a solarium and a stunning courtyard that offers a multitude of perfect photo opportunities. That just speaks of the main building. Look around the grounds as you enter, and you’ll see the rustic ruins of one of Maui’s original sugar mills built in the 1850s, now a picture-perfect romantic spot for your vows.

Better than the beach Walk around the property and you’ll spy the quaint Artist’s Cottage — originally built in 1917 as a studio for original homeowner, Ethel Baldwin — which, if not housing one of the Hui’s visiting artists, is a perfect spot to get dressed for your ceremony. Continue strolling, slowly, you’ll not want to miss a

ast year, the Hui started a program called “To Have & To Hold,” which allows prospective couples to create memories together: ❥ A private ring-making class allows couples to spend three hours creating their own custom wedding and/or engagement bands with one of the Hui’s own professional jewelers. Prices vary due to individual choices. ❥ A bridal party private jewelry class gathers the bridal party (up to eight guests) for fun in the jewelry studio making customized hand-stamped argentium silver bracelets. All supplies are provided to make one bracelet per guest. ❥ A discover glass class allows a couple to feel the heat and unlock their creativity as they get a taste of glassblowing — and leave with a beautiful glass orb. ❥ Wedding party favors and custom gift baskets can be filled with items handpicked from a wide variety of items available in the Hui’s gift shop as a way to thank their wedding party, family and friends.

Guest list. The guest list doesn’t have to be a source of anxiety. Others will understand that there may be a melange of people at a second wedding. Children from previous marriages as well as divorced spouses or former parents-in-law are not out of the question. Even if exes will not be included, make sure they know about

the nuptials in advance of others. It’s common courtesy, and it can help head off feelings of ill-will. Some couples choosing to tie the knot again scale back the size of the wedding this time around, feeling something smaller and more intimate — with only the closest of friends and family — is more suitable. Registries and wedding gifts. Considering couples who have been married previously likely have many of the housewares and items for daily living that firsttimers may not, registering for these gifts is not necessary. What’s more, some of the same guests may have

been present at first marriages and gifted then. In lieu of gifts, couples may ask guests to donate to a specific charity or forgo gifts altogether.

Vows. Couples can use experience to draft vows that have personal meaning to their unique situations and make the wedding ceremony even more special. People getting married again can impart their own personalities into the ceremony and party to follow. There are no hard rules governing second weddings, so couples can plan their weddings with good times in mind.

n adherence to traditional wedding wardrobes, brides wear white and veils to complete their ensembles. While many people may view veils as a symbol of purity and chastity, various sources indicate veils had a more prominent purpose. Cosmopolitan magazine indicates that veils first became popular in ancient Roman times, when brides were covered head-to-toe in a red sheet called a flammeum. The sheet was intended to scare off any evil spirits that might ruin the wedding. Veils eventually replaced the flammeum to disguise the bride from those naughty spirits. Veils also were used to hide brides’ faces from grooms in an era of arranged marriages when grooms had never seen their brides before their wedding days. Thankfully, today’s veils are more about fashion than function.

Why June?

ince Ancient Roman times, June has been a popular month for couples to tie the knot. The month’s namesake, the goddess Juno, was said to be the protector of women in every aspect, but most notably in regard to marriage and childbearing. Therefore, it made sense to get married and take the first step toward creating a family in June. For practical reasons, June also has been a prime month for marriage because the month is neither especially hot nor especially cold in many areas of the world. While dressed in formalwear — whether having an outdoor wedding or an indoor one — no one wants to be overheated or uncomfortably cold.
