Pope’s marriage recipe: ‘Please, thanks, sorry’ By NICOLE WINFIELD The Associated Press

VATICAN CITY —Î Pope Francis offered some advice last month for a lasting marriage, telling 25,000 lovebirds that the recipe for success lies in saying three simple words: “Please, thanks and sorry.â€? Francis told people gathered in St. Peter’s Square for a special papal date Feb. 14 that expressions of courtesy, gratitude and contrition go a long way toward conserving and enhancing love over time. “Never finish the day without making peace!â€? he begged them. “Because if you end the day without
making peace, what you have inside becomes hard and cold, and it becomes harder to make peace the following day. Francis has, on several occasions, met with young couples to give them advice before embarking on marriage. The need for such church counseling, both before and after the wedding, is a theme he’s expected to elaborate on at a major Vatican meeting on the family in October. Francis has often lamented how many marriages end in divorce and has blamed such failed relationships on today’s prevailing “provisional culture that makes
people unwilling to make lifelong commitments. Originally the audience was due to be held inside a Vatican auditorium. But the response from soon-to-wed couples to Francis’ invitation for a Valentine’s Day date was so great —Î Vatican officials said 25,000 people from 30 countries showed up — that the event was held in the piazza on a perfect, sunny afternoon after weeks of rain. Francis joked that we all make mistakes and that no one is perfect: “The perfect family doesn’t exist, nor the perfect husband nor wife. Let’s not even talk about the perfect mother-in-law!â€?

Moments Matter THAT
MARIAH MILAN PROVIDES PICTURE-PERFECT IMAGES WHILE HELPING FOSTER A BETTER ISLE COMMUNITY By KEHAULANI CERIZO Special Sections Editor
WAILUKU ariah Milan Dagupion magically captures moments that many would miss. “I enjoy moments that happen in between the posed positions,” she said. “With a bride and groom, they get in front of the camera and they don’t know what to do. I tell them to whisper to each other and I walk away. It’s what they’re doing afterward that I’m more interested in. When they start laughing together, that’s the moment I’m really going for. They see it and say, ‘Oh, I didn’t know you were getting that in the picture.’ ” “It’s the little, intimate moments that are my favorite.” The Wailuku resident founded Mariah Milan Photography in 2004, a local company that specializes in small weddings, engagement photos and family portraits. This year, she’s celebrating a decade of producing professional, beautiful images for the most significant moments in life. Her body of work is film inspired with vintage undertones, and her editing style is soft and welcoming.

“It’s not over-the-top, in-your-face colorful,” Mariah said. “It’s natural, but a little more on the romantic film side.” Mariah finds fun locations around the island to serve as the setting for her shoots. The Valley Isle provides the perfect backdrop — from Upcountry’s rolling hills and lush landscape to the sandy, vibrant coastlines and everything in between. Knowing Maui as well as she does, she reveals an affinity between her subjects and their environments. The photographer has four to five sessions a week regularly, and up to 15 per week during the busy seasons of summer and Christmas. She works with visitors and residents, and personally guides each client through the process, making people feel at ease.

Why care about a bra? The bra is a foundational garment that affects your look from head to toe. While we normally think of the waist as the middle of a woman’s body, visually, it’s the bustline that’s the most important landmark. “From the bustline up, along with the shoulders, is the frame for the face,” Terri Erwin says. “And from the bustline down, it adds to the perception of leg length and height. I’ve seen women, honest to goodness, with the proper fitting bra, it did for her what a year of Pilates would do. Not kidding —10 pounds (disappeared). It whittles the middle.”

When it became legal, they jumped at the chance to make it official.”

THE MAUI NEWS 2014 WEDDINGS EDITION MARIAH Continued from Page 3 What’s also unique about Mariah is the element of her work that is often unseen. Mariah grew up on Maui with simple means, learning at an early age that people are much more important than things. “My husband and I prefer a simple life so that we can help others,” said Mariah, who has three young children with husband Peter Dagupion. The couple shares a desire to give back, so Mariah Milan Photography sets aside a portion of its monthly income for nonprofits, including Feed My Sheep Maui, The Will Smith Foundation, Hospice Maui and others. Her family also donates to individuals in need, who she hears about through word-of-mouth connections, such as her Maui High School classmate who traveled to the Mainland be-
cause his young child needed open heart surgery. “Giving back is definitely a big deal for me,” Mariah said. “All the charitable monies come out first before gross profits.” Mariah was born on the Mainland but came to Maui with her family when she was 8 years old. She grew up in Haiku and attended Kalama Intermediate School. After graduating from Maui High School, she went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Maui Community College. During her time at MCC to study hotel operations, Mariah interned at White Orchid Wedding. As an office assistant, she would comb through wedding photos. Eventually, Peter bought her a camera to encourage the passion. She connected with photographer Martin Wyand, who she calls a mentor, and he invited her to
work with him on shoots. Her first photography job in 2002 was for a friend who wanted maternity images. People were so happy with the finished product that referrals sprouted up. Soon, word caught on, and Mariah’s business was established in 2004 to keep up with demand. “It just took off,” she said. Now, Mariah looks back at 10 years of photo clients who also helped cultivate philanthropy — whether they knew it at the time or not. Her work reveals beauty on so many levels, and her subjects are a pivotal part of the process. “By choosing me as your photographer, you are not just helping to support my family, you are helping someone else in need,” she said. ■ Kehaulani Cerizo can be reached at kcerizo@ mauinews.com.

A: Focus on photography and personality. Every photographer has a certain style of capturing images. Do the images presented to you appeal to the stylistic elements that you can envision yourself in? Always ask to see a portfolio of images from an event in its entirety — from start to finish — not just a few images of many events. This will give you an idea about how consistent the photographer is at capturing images and not just lucky in snagging a few nice ones. This will also give you an idea as to what the final product will be like. Do the images in the portfolio transition smoothly from one event on your wedding day to the next? Does it tell a story? Regarding personality: Do you connect on a personal level with the photographer? This is someone who will be with you the entire time on probably the most intimate and important day of your life. Will he or she be able to keep you comfortable and at ease as a couple? The more relaxed you are, the better the images. Q: ARE THERE ANY CREDENTIALS THAT ARE IMPORTANT? A: Credentials and experience aren’t necessary for a photographer to be great, but they do give you better insight into his or her professional background. The seasoned photographer should be able to deal with any problems that may occur, without making it a big deal, such as inclimate weather, equipment mal-

Jiggling, bulging or sagging in any of your soft, curvy spots can be improved with the right mix of foundations. For brides and attendants, each woman can expect to need a bra of some type, whether for support, stability and shaping of the bust. And perhaps something may be used for smoothing the middle or the hips, depending on dress style. There is tremendous choice in bridal foundations, including strapless bras, bustiers, corsets, shapers, panties and garter belts. Each one helps solve particular shaping issues, and a professional can help you select ones that will do what you need. For example, you can get a great fit in a strapless all the way to an H-cup — six cups past double-D!
For fitted dresses, when the side seams are tailored, you will need to be wearing your “game-day” shapewear. AVOID FALSE SITUATIONS There are a few traps to dodge. Don’t rely on sewn-in cups or the boning already in your dress. They will move with the dress, not with your body. Clear straps are fine for every day but inappropriate for your big day. Finally, think twice about tape-on bras. If you are an A or B cup, a bra that tapes on might work to stabilize your bust a little bit, but it won’t enhance your shape. If you are a C cup, it’s risky. D and up — they are fatal!

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR ASSETS For a formal occasion, an underwire bra will give you your best shape. Keep your soft cup bras for everyday use. Like squeezing a water balloon from underneath, the underwire rounds the top of the bust for pretty curves. You can get a good fit with a strapless up to an H cup. When you bra shop, take along a tight T-shirt so you can see the shape and check for any spillage or bulging from a poorly fitted bra.

KNOW HOW MUCH CLEAVAGE IS TOO MUCH CLEAVAGE At its best, cleavage appears as a slight shadow at the curve where the breasts meet. At worst, it appears as a squishy overflow across the top of your dress and under the arms. In that case, it’s an indication of a poor fit, either from the dress or the bra – probably both. Spare your grandmother and keep the cleavage on the conservative side.
9
DON’T FORGET THE HONEYMOON LINGERIE Your big day quickly turns into your big night. Honeymoon lingerie comes in an array of styles that will flatter your figure, whether curvy, slim or any shape in between. Have fun and find the right fit for your personality and body type. One hint is to think babydoll negligee. With or without underwire, the high waistline flatters every female.

Let history, romance and the natural beauty of Hawaii surround you during a wedding ceremony at Trinityby-the-Sea Church, 100 Kulanihakoi St., Kihei. Originally named Kilolani Church, the facility was built in 1852 by David Malo, the third Native Hawaiian to be ordained in Christian ministry. Since then, the historical site has undergone a series of trials, including being set ablaze during the 1893 overthrow; flooding from a 100-year storm that demolished its walls in the early 1900s; and subsequent abandonment. However, in 1976, the small Episcopal congregation of Trinity-by-the-Sea revived the sanctuary. Now, the site serves as a beautiful outdoor setting for rustic weddings, along with regular church services. The structure’s challenges add to its allure; and the site’s significance has been able to withstand the test of time. An onsite wedding coordinator devoted exclusively to planning will help with important details. For more information, call Mary Aymar at 879-0161 or visit www.trinitybts.org/weddings.html.

Consider some of the following questions; but don’t view the answers as make-it-orbreak-it factors: • Has the photographer had any formal education or training? • Are they members of any professional photographers organizations (Professional Photographers of America, Wedding and Portrait Photographers International, Professional Photographers of Hawaii, etc.)? • Have they received any awards or accolades from the industry or his/her peers? • Are they networked with any other wedding service providers (planners, bakers, hair stylists, caterers, etc.)? • How many weddings a year and how long has the photographer been in the business? Q: IS EQUIPMENT SIGNIFICANT TO PULL OFF A GOOD SHOT? A: Possessing the latest, greatest equipment does not make a great photographer. However, having the best equipment for the job and knowing how to use it is just as important as having an artistic eye. The experienced photographer is prepared with backup equipment, such as multiple camera bodies, lenses, flashes and other items, in case of equipment malfunctions. Professionals will be prepared with equipment to handle various lighting conditions and locations. Ask your photographer if he or she has experience at your particular venue(s). Q: WHAT KINDS OF QUESTIONS ARE IMPORTANT TO ASK WHEN SHOPPING AROUND? A: The professional should be the one asking questions, then listening to everything you have to say in order to offer the best recommendations for your event. He or she should take into account every aspect of your wedding day, especially your budget. Also, the professional photographer will be upfront and honest if your budget is unrealistic for what you’re expecting. Once a budget is agreed upon, consider some of these questions: • How many hours of wedding day coverage is included; how many hours of nonwedding-day time is included? • Is an album included; if so, what size and how many pages? • Are digital files included? • Are editing and digital enhancements all-inclusive?

Q: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IMAGES HAVE TOO MANY FILTERS OR ADDED PHOTO EFFECTS? A: Filters and added effects have a place in helping enhance a mood in an image. On a few images, they’re fine, but a great image should be great on its own merit and not because of “special effects.” How will an image with a bunch of filters and effects stand the test of time and compare to the timeless images of generations past?
