2014 slogan embraces the passion of competition, Russia’s winter majesty & the games’ inclusive setting
Making its home in Russia’s Krasnodar region, Sochi plays host for the nation’s first Olympic Winter Games. Organized in two clusters — one mountain and one coastal — the games are one of the most compact Olympics ever. The tight geographic nature of the 2014 games serves as the inspiration for this year’s slogan: “Hot” — for the Black Sea coastal area where the ice events will be held; “Cool” — for the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains, home to the skiing and sledding competitions; and “Yours” — an average 30-minute travel time between the clusters that allows unprecedented access to the events for attendees.

The medals for the 2014 games feature a patchwork quilt of designs representing the cultures and ethnicities of the Russian federation. Sochi, itself, is the star of this most-coveted prize — depicted as golden rays of sun reflected through a prism of snowy mountaintops onto the sandy beaches of the Black Sea coast. On the front of the medals are the iconic Olympic rings, while the back displays the name of the competition. The name of the games adorns the rim in Russian, English and French. The medals weigh between 1619 ounces and are nearly 4 inches in diameter. Nearly 1,300 were manufactured for the games.

‘Night Train’ pulling into the Sochi station
Schedule subject to change. Check with your local cable provider for updated times.
Steven Holcomb, Curtis Tomasevicz, Steven Langton and Christopher Fogt of Team USA will be seeking another gold in the four-man Bobsled at Sochi. “Night Train” returns to Olympic competition after taking the gold in the four-man run in Vancouver in 2010. The victory ended a 62-year gold medal drought for the United States in the four-man bobsled competition.

Cool runnings in Sochi as Jamaica returns to bobsledding Get ready, Sochi: The Jamaicans are coming, and they’re bringing their bobsled again. Jamaican bobsled pilot Winston Watts and the nation’s Olympic Committee have accepted an invitation to compete in the Sochi Olympics. It’s the first time the Jamaican
bobsled team will compete in the games since 2002. The invitation comes after Watts accumulated enough points in lower-tier races in North America to qualify. “Oh, man, it’s really overwhelming,” Watts said. “I’m really happy. I have the whole entire world
behind us. The Jamaica bobsled team is very popular, but when I see and hear that the whole entire world, even the Middle East — I mean, really, there’s a place in the Middle East that calls me and I don't even know its name — we have fans from so far away. For a little tiny island, it’s so emotional.”

Already decorated multiple times on the junior and senior circuits, the Shibutanis will be looking for a place on the podium in Sochi.

Harvard alum Julie Chu already is getting face time in American TV ads. At 31, she’s the oldest member of Team USA, and she’ll be heading to her fourth Olympics in search of her first gold, after already collecting two silvers and a bronze. Women’s hockey could draw extra eyeballs this time around if the heated rivalry between the United States and Canada continues in Sochi: They’ve engaged in a series of brawls, even in exhibitions. The native of Fairfield, Conn., proudly follows her family motto: “CHU — Commitment, Honor, Unity.”

Captain Crosby raising a little Kane
Team USA’s Patrick Kane and Canada’s team captain Sidney Crosby jockey for the puck in the second period of a preliminary round men’s ice hockey game at the Vancouver Olympics Feb. 21, 2010. While “The Next One” will be looking for a repeat of Canada’s OT win over USA in Vancouver, “The Kaner” would love to add 19 ounces of Olympic gold to the silver Stanley Cup he hoisted over his head in June. The pair will be facing down many of their own teammates alongside some of their most heated rivals as the NHL again goes on hockey hiatus for this international ice extravaganza.

Known as the “Flying Tomato” for his fiery-red mane, White is looking for an Olympic three-peat at the Sochi games. The 27-year-old native of San Diego has even concocted at new trick for the 2014 competition: It’s a frontside double-cork 1440 — which resembles his Double McTwist 1260, but adds another half-revolution of twist inside the two head-over-heels flips.

Star-spangled ski wear for Team USA The competition uniforms for the U.S. alpine ski team at the Sochi games will feature a national anthem-inspired theme. Spyder Active Sports Inc. says the suits’ colors are meant to represent the reflection of the U.S. flag on Chesapeake Bay following the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The bombardment witnessed by
Francis Scott Key inspired the lyrics to the “Star-Spangled Banner.” U.S. ski team spokesman Tom Kelly says the Boulder-based company has been providing the team’s ski suits since 1989. They will be worn by members of the team competing in the downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom and the super combined at the games that begin Feb. 7.

Will she get gold again? Hannah Kearney, of the United States, competes during the women’s freestyle World Cup moguls event Jan. 11 in Park City, Utah. Kearney came in first place. Kearny, 27, of Norwich, Vt. is competing in her third Olympics. She found herself at the top of the podium in 2010, winning gold at the Vancouver games.
Caldwell gunning to be the comeback cutie Team USA freestyle skier Ashley Caldwell poses for a portrait at the 2013 Team USA Media Summit in Park City, Utah. The budding American aerials star considers herself a grizzled veteran after tearing the ACLs in both of her knees in a span of 363 days between 2011-12, though the injuries have done little to deter her from keeping her sights set on Sochi. Aerials might be one of the most purely terrifying sports in the
Olympics. Race down a ramp at full speed, and then launch yourself a half-dozen stories into the air before combining any series of multiple flips and twists into a three-second flight, trying to time everything just right so that your skis land softly in the snow like you’re at the end of a run on a bunny slope. The 20-year-old from Lake Placid, N.Y., is one of five women skiiers in the world who try triple-flipping jumps.

Russians carry a torch for the games Olympic torch bearer Yekaterina Kuznetsova runs with the Olympic flame during the torch relay in Izhevsk, Russia, Jan. 2. The relay for the Sochi Winter Games, which began Oct. 7 in Moscow, will pass through many cities that showcase the historical, cultural and ethnic richness of Russia. Upon completing its journey at the Sochi opening ceremony, the flame will have traveled 40,389 miles — the longest journey in Olympic history — including legs to the North Pole, a ride on a nuclear-powered ice breaker
and even a trip through space. A key symbol of the Olympic games, the torch often captures the imagination of the world. It’s bright, eye-catching design in Russian red and silver combines folklore motifs and is intended to reflect the host country’s hospitality and the joyful and inspirational atmosphere which is an integral part of the Olympic Torch Relay. It’s overall construction is reminiscent of the feather of the Phoenix, the mythical firebird whose plumes can bring good luck.
Soaring through air — and adversity — for the gold Team USA’s Bryan Fletcher soars through the air during the ski jumping portion on day two of the Nordic Combined triple World Cup in Seefeld, Austria Jan. 18. The 27-year old native of Steamboat Springs, Colo., has overcome his fair share of hardship on the way to his first Olympics. Fletcher is a cancer survivor, having endured seven years of chemotherapy and a stroke — all before the age of 10.

Lindsey Van competes in the women’s ski jumping event at the U.S. Olympic trials in Park City, Utah Dec. 29. While Lindsey Vonn will be staying home this year, Lindsey Van will be making her Olympic debut in Sochi. The 10-time World Cup top-ten finisher is 29 and hails from Park City, Utah. The reigning world champ — who won the inaugural women’s championship in 2009 — was among those who fought for women’s ski jumping to be included in the 2014 Olympics. Van, joined by Jessica Jerome and Sarah Hendrickson, will debut the sport at Sochi this month.
Meet the furry friends of Sochi
Along with the flame, the rings, the pageantry and the fierce competition, Olympic mascots are another tradition of the games that have returned for 2014. From USA’s Sam the Bald Eagle and Roni the Raccoon to the four owls of Nagano, the cartoon characters have been a fun way to celebrate the host nation’s culture ... and sell a bit of merchandise, too. This year, see if your kids can spot this cast of colorful characters having fun between the events. Bely Mishka the polar bear, Zaika the dore hare, Snow Leopard and their extraterrestrial friends Ray of Light and Snowflake can be seen for the entire fortnight, helping promote the principles of the Olympic spirit, Russia’s rich culture and serving as symbols of the modern Olympic movement.
