headaches. Four cases showed no response. Because migraine is a brain disorder that has been frequently linked to head trauma, it was theorized that correction of traumainduced cervical Erin Elster, D.C. misalignments may positively impact migraine. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, nearly 30 million people, or 10 percent of the U.S. population, suffer from migraine — 75 percent of them women. About half of affected women have more than one attack each month, and a quarter experience four or more severe attacks per month. In addition to suffering through the attacks, many of those afflicted with migraine live in constant fear of the next attack, which could come at any time to disrupt work, school, family time, and social activities. Half of all migraine sufferers experience

their first attack before the age of 12. In fact, about 10 percent of school-age children suffer from migraine. These children are absent from school twice as often as children without migraine. Migraine also takes a toll in the work place. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, American employers lose $13 billion each year as a result of 113 million lost work days. This devastating impact upon adults, children, work and family life warrants migraine’s ranking in the top 20 of the world’s most disabling illnesses. Migraine is a complex neurological disorder, which occurs in attacks, similar to seizure. Symptoms include intense, throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head accompanied by nausea, vomiting, dizziness, visual disturbances, and sensitivity to light and sound. Attacks range between 4 and 72 hours during which many migraine sufferers sequester themselves in a quiet, dark room until the attack passes. The large majority of migraine sufferers are unable to work, attend school, or function normally See MIGRAINES on Page 6

Joy’s Place LIVE! is offering a three-day cleanse program

BY LEHIA APANA Special Sections Editor or some, the words “juice cleanse” is synonymous with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek. For others, it prompts images of lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper concoctions meant to shed pounds and detoxify one’s system. For Tyua Sereda, recipe developer and marketing representative at health food restaurant Joy’s Place in Kihei, a juice cleanse is a way to help people eat smarter. Unlike more extreme programs like the well-known Master Cleanse or apple cider vinegar detox, Sereda has created a gentle three-day cleanse that includes a range of organic produce and superfoods — from locally-sourced coconut water and kale juice to vegetable miso soup and goji chia elixir. The program, dubbed “Clean! 3 Day Cleanses,” is being offered through Joy’s Place LIVE!, and is designed to provide a healthy, safe and guided way to refresh your system. “It’s not a radical cleanse,” says Sereda. “By that I mean that a lot of cleanses are liquid only, and they tend to be longer. Our cleanse is liquid, but they’re hardy liquids, so it’s almost like you’re eating.” Here’s how it works: everything needed for the cleanse is included, simply pick up the fresh juice each day from Joy’s Place Pukalani kitchen. According to Sereda, the program includes enough food for a person to consume something every two hours during the day. Participants will also receive a welcome

during their attacks. Various migraine risk factors have been named including heredity, chemical exposure, and hormone imbalances, to name a few. Another causal factor — head trauma — which is beginning to appear more frequently in medical research, was the basis for the JVSR study. Of the 101 patients in the JVSR study, 87 recalled at least one traumatic event prior to his or her headache onset. The most common traumas included whiplash and/or concussion sustained as a result of auto accidents and through sports such as skiing, cycling, horseback riding, football, gymnastics, snowboarding, and skateboarding. In pediatric cases, parents recalled difficult births and/or falls early in their child’s life that preceded headache onset. One patient in the study, for exam-

ple, was a professional ice skater. She had never experienced headaches until sustaining a concussion at the age of 23 from a head-first fall on the ice. Subsequent to the concussion, she began suffering from debilitating migraine headaches for 12 years, until undergoing the study treatment; whereby, the headaches ceased. Even in cases where the study subjects did not recall incidences of head trauma prior to their headache onset, upper cervical misalignments were found. In fact, all 101 cases showed evidence of cervical trauma when two diagnostic tests — thermal imaging and cervical x-ray — were performed. The evaluation and treatment protocol administered in the study was a form of chiropractic care, known as Upper Cervical Chiropractic. After determining a diagnosis of cervical injury, each patient’s injured neck was corrected by administering a precise adjustment by hand on a specially-designed table. Of the study subjects, most adult

patients’ headaches were resolved within four months of care. All pediatric cases were resolved within two months. Most of the study subjects had suffered with headaches for years and had attempted numerous treatments including but not limited to pain medications (prescription and over-the-counter,) massage, rolfing, acupuncture, herbs, cervical manipulation, Chinese medicine, biofeedback, hormone pills, etc. Migraine is a debilitating disorder which affects the quality of life of millions of adults and children. The relationship between head trauma, migraine onset, and upper cervical treatment provides hope for these headache sufferers. The headache research discussed above was performed by Upper Cervical Chiropractor, Erin Elster, D.C., and is available on her website, www.erinelster.com. Kidney donor Kats Anderson helped bring H.O.T. (Hawaii Organ Transplant support group) to Maui. Its focus is to help those with chronic kidney disease, on dialysis or going through a kidney transplant, and their family members.

H.O.T.

Hawaii Organ Transplant New support group helps those dealing with a kidney transplant ere’s news that may surprise you: nearly six out of 10 Americans will develop kidney disease in their lifetime, according to a new analysis published in the American Journal of Kidney Disease. In comparison, lifetime risk of diabetes, heart attack and invasive cancer is approximately four in 10. The good news is that there’s a community of people who are here to help those dealing with this disease. Recently, the Hawaii Organ Transplant Support Group (HOT) was formed and endorsed by the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii. The focus of the new support group on Maui is to help those with chronic kidney disease, those on dialysis, those going through a kidney transplant and their family members. Organ transplantation recipients and donors have already stepped forward to push the group’s momentum forward. Maui residents Kats Anderson and Lianne Suzuki are two women who have experienced the ups and downs of undergoing a kidney transplant. Here are their stories.

Reiki Natural Healing

I am a prayer intercessor at my church on Maui and received an email from an affiliate church requesting prayer for a woman named Suzy Crowell, who lives in California. As I read the email request, I was so moved by Suzy and all that she has done with her life — how she has given back through her missions and has served our Lord. I felt as though God put it on my heart to donate my kidney. So I immediately answered Him and said “Okay, I will.” As I continued to read through the email, I discovered that we were the same blood type. I felt as though I just received confirmation that I needed to respond with prayer and put my name on Suzy’s list. I immediately did so. The entire process took about a year and a half and we went

ealthy veins are not simply a cosmetic issue, but an essential part of your overall well-being. No matter what stage you are at in your life — whether planning a pregnancy or playing with grandchildren — knowing the symptoms and risk factor for vein conditions can help you stay healthy, happy, and on the move for years to come. Before starting any treatment, it is important to understand a little bit about veins, vein health, risk factors, treatment and prevention. The job of a vein is to return blood back to the heart. Veins are thin and have one-way valves to keep blood flowing toward the heart. Because the blood in veins contains so little oxygen, the vein has a bluish appearance under the skin. An adult has more than 60,000 miles of veins, and more than 60 million Americans suffer from some form of venous disease. There are a variety of factors that can lead to malfunction. Your best defense is to know the risk factors, to identify symptoms at an early stage, to focus on prevention and management, and to take advantage of all available treatment options. There are several risk factors in developing vein disease. These include age, gender, lifestyle, and most importantly heredity. As your age increases, so does the likelihood of you having some type of venous problem. Women are 2.5 times more likely to have venous disease over men due to hormone surges throughout life. Venous disease can also be aggravated by lifestyle or occupational risks. Jobs that include standing or sitting for long periods of time in one position are known risk factors. Genetics plays the most important role, however, and 70 to 80 per-

cent of patients have a strong family history. Symptoms of vein disease can vary from obvious discolorations on lower extremities to pain, fullness, fatigue, itching, swelling, and even ulcerative lesions. Simple lower extremity exercises, such as walking or jogging, can help the circulatory system and improve the return of venous blood back to the heart. On the other hand, if venous disease is already present, exercise, compression stockings and elevation will decrease symptoms, but will not cure the problem. Large clusters of varicosities may put you in a higher risk level of developing superficial blood clots or deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Patients who neglect early symptoms of vein disease will likely see a worsening of their symptoms and findings. While vein disease may progress slowly at first, once it reaches a critical point, it may progress at a much more rapid rate. The healing process begins with you. With ongoing advancements in medical research and technology, treatment options are well within your reach. State-ofthe-art medical procedures allow varicose and spider veins to be treated more effectively and safely than ever before. It is important to see a phlebologist — a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disorders and conditions — for proper care of your venous problems. All treatments are done in the office with little to no down time. Patients can return to work the same day if needed. Most insurance companies and Medicare cover modern medical vein treatments.

I was so overwhelmed with the things that Suzy must have been feeling, including her feelings of losing hope through all the medical struggles. Although she was very grateful and hopeful, I could still feel her struggles, as she was not out of the woods six months — and now more than one year — after the transplant. Around the middle of 2012, I discovered that H.O.T. (Hawaii Organ Transplant support group) was forming on Oahu, and decided to get on board to bring this group to Maui. Since then, I have met many transplant patients and have found that a lot of the stories are similar — the story does not end at transplantation. My heart goes out to all who are contemplating the difficult choices of what type of dialysis treatment they will go through due to their kidney failure, kidney disease or course diabetes. I only hope we can bring hope to as many people out there that are willing to receive it.

I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) in my early 20s, which affected my kidneys and eyesight. Eventually, my nephrologist told me I had to start dialysis. Yup, my whole life changed from that point on. I chose to do peritoneal dialysis (PD) on my own. At that time, the training was done on Oahu, and there were no machines to assist you. Now my path to recovery was a different one. This time the checkups and medications were for anti-rejection reasons, and not for end-stage renal failure. It was all worth it. This was a new beginning for me in life. Now it is my turn to give something back and this is part of my new beginning. Let our Hawaii Organ Transplant support team be there for you!

Tired of body pain? Bowenwork may be the answer any of us know someone who is convinced they are going to live with pain or a loss of bodily function. These people have given up their favorite hobbies or sports. They have tried what they believe to be all of the options, and are convinced they will suffer a lifetime of pain. Maybe that person is you. The good news is that there’s still hope, according to Jennifer Carey of Bowenwork Maui. Here, we ask her about this specialized form of bodywork and talk about how it has changed the lives of her clients.

M

Q:What is Bowenwork? Jennifer Carey: The muscles and connective tissue (tendons, ligaments

and fascia) contain specialized cells that communicate with our central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). They send information about the length of our muscles and the tone or tension in the tendons, ligaments and joints. The gentle, handson Bowenwork procedures use these mechanisms to normalize tension levels and create balance in the length of the muscles. The result is a reduction or elimination of pain, as well an increase in the range of motion around the joints and a return to normal function. The goal of this therapy is not to get you to return for more treatments, but rather to permit the body to correct the dysfunction itself so that there is no need to return Q:Who is eligible for

this type of therapy? JC: My clients range from newborn babies with colic, to people of all ages who have been in auto accidents or work accidents. It has brought relief to seniors with arthritis and to high-level athletes with injuries that would have kept them out of the game. Most often, people come in when they have tried everything else and they have not improved. Often, they have lived with the problem for months or years. It is an option to try before resorting to surgery or medications. Q: How many visits do people undergo before feeling results? JC: Clients usually report feeling results within the first day or two of their treatment. Often, large changes happen within three to five days. The body integrates the work hour by hour, day by day. I typically see clients 2 to 4 times, depending on the problem. Chronic situations or longstanding issues can require more visits. Q:Why did you decide to study Bowenwork? JC: I was injured in an auto accident several years

I had been to a chiropractor multiple times per week for over two years, yet had only been able to achieve minimal results from therapy. A friend suggested I try Bowenwork; it had helped her get rid of her back pain. I did some research and decided I had nothing

to lose, so I gave it a try. After a couple of treatments, the pain was nearly gone and my range of motion was returning. I resumed physical therapy and regained my strength and got back to living.

over time. For that reason, it is best to avoid other manipulative therapies for 7 to 10 days after a Bowenwork session so that they do not interfere with the body’s response to the Bowenwork. Exercise, sports and physical therapy are fine. Q: How do your clients hear about you? JC: At least 95 percent is by referral from clients who have gotten results and tell their friends and family. Others see me doing presentations at the senior center, health fairs and local sports clubs. Q: What are your qualifications? JC: I hold a Bachelors of Science in Biolo-

gy/Anatomy and Physiology from California State University Sacramento. I also trained with the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia — the only institution training in the original Bowen technique. I am trained and certified in all Masters Level Bowen procedures. In addition, I am certified in CPR and First Aid, as well as fully licensed and insured.
