n apple a day alone may not keep the doctor away, but regular health screenings are a proven effective method to catch disease early on when successful treatment is most likely to lead to lower mortality rates. For generations of women, standard health screenings have included yearly mammograms, which are proven to be very effective at identifying breast cancer early, affording a successful outcome. Statistics from www.breastcancer.org state breast cancer will affect one in every eight women. It is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in U.S. women (excluding cancers of the skin) and accounts for 30 percent of newly diagnosed cancers. While breast cancer ranks as the No. 2 cause of cancer death in women (after lung cancer), survival rates have increased dramatically from even just a generation ago. Early detection is one step in helping those odds. Early detection means the cancer doesn’t have a chance to metastisize to other organs and bones. It also means less aggressive and invasive treatments are needed, taking less physical and emotional toll on the patient and their families. Maui Memorial Medical Center’s Diagnostic Imaging department offers the most advanced imaging equipment on Maui, and some of the most advanced equipment available in Hawaii to help with early detection.

Front entrance of Maui Memorial Medical Center Director of Diagnostic Imaging Dennis McKeon had spent over 10 years in an academic medical center on the Mainland (Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J.), and he excitedly pointed out MMMC has equipment on par with teaching-hospital equipment. The MRI machine at MMMC is the Philips 3 Tesla MRI. It has the strongest magnet you can use in health care, and produces the highest quality and most detailed images of any MRI machine currently available to
hospitals. The scans are ultra fast, reducing the amount of time a patient spends in the machine. The Toshiba 640-slice CT scanner can image the entire heart in one-third of a second, resulting in less radiation exposure for the patient. Similarly, the GE Senographe Mammography System provides higher quality images using lower radiation dosages than older machines. Maui Health System Continued from Page T3 these quality machines here on Maui helps improve patient’s recovery chances as well as ultimately saving money and time. “There is a continuity of care that now happens in imaging after a screening mammogram,” explained McKeon. “The images are viewed right away, so if we need additional pictures, the patient will get a diagnostic mammogram right in the facility.” A diagnostic mammogram takes images of different views and positions of the breast at higher magnification than that used in the screening mammogram. McKeon added that once the images are reviewed, if there’s a concern that needs to be looked at further, the patient will go for an ultrasound or back into mammography for a biopsy. Thanks to the recent acquisition of a Faxitron, which is like a mini X-ray machine in the operating room, the sample can be read immediately right in the operating room by the radiologist (who will likely be in their office). In the past, the tissue sample would have to be taken from the operating room to the imaging department. By using the Faxitron, the time saved has the benefit of having the patient under anaesthesia for less time as well as allowing the doctor to make sure all the necessary tissue has been removed. Since its inception in 2005, MHF has helped more than 900 Maui women by providing life-saving cancer screenings. This year, McKeon and Long Term Care and Critical Access Senior Director Kerry Pitcher saw a need and kicked off a pilot program to bring women over from Lanai for mammograms. MHF selected a group of women, booked their travel on Expeditions Maui-Lanai Ferry, scheduled mammograms, treated them to lunch and returned them home to Lanai. “Lanai has no service,” offered McKeon, explaining the reasoning behind this project. “We’re going to keep this program running twice a year. We provide [the Lanai women] with education too, including self breast exams. They were so appreciative. “Some of the things we heard from them were, ‘You know, . . . no one has taught me how to do a proper breast
exam,’ and ‘We have a lot of immigrants from Polynesia, and they don’t know how [to do a breast exam]; we’ll teach them!’ ” It should be noted, too, that anyone can self-refer for a mammogram screening; just call 243-3012 and say, “I’d like to self-refer for a mammogram screening.” You must have a physician to receive and interpret the report, but thanks to the Food and Drug Administration’s implementation of the Mammography Quality Standards Act, women are ensured to have “access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.” In addition to the help MHF provides to uninsured women and the academic medical center-quality equipment now available, McKeon assured that MMMC and Maui Health System are focused on quality care — “you save money when people are healthy.” One innovative change that came about in the past year is MMMC’s contract with a new radiology group, Renaissance Imaging Medical Associates. This is a group of more than 100 physicians, which includes existing MMMC physicians as well as Mainland physicians, who aid in diagnosing radiology reports. “Now, while our doctors can interpret an image, they have access to a doctor in California who is specially trained in that area,” explained McKeon. “Our doctors can then focus on what they specialize in. We have also partnered with Pacific Cancer Institute. We’re doing exams for their patients and [supporting] radiologists onsite.” In order to continue helping those women with no health insurance, a new fundraising campaign from MHF, Kokua for a Cause — Sponsor a Mammogram, was established. Officially kicking off in October during Breast Cancer Awareness month, but active currently (if anyone reading this feels inclined to help), this campaign allows someone to donate any amount of money to the foundation to help cover the costs of a mammogram or biopsy — and the money goes specifically for that purpose. For a $500 donation, the cost of someone’s mammogram will be covered; for $5,000 to $10,000 a woman’s biopsy will be paid for, depending on the procedure. Breast health may be the first thing many people consider when thinking about women’s health, but MMMC and MHS offer additional wellness care to the community. Support groups for diabetics, stroke survivors and people impacted by Alzheimer’s disease are held regularly in the MMMC Nutrition Education Room (located inside the cafeteria), are free and open to the community and are not just for people who have had an inpatient stay. On the second Wednesday of every month from 5 to 6 p.m., MHS Diabetes Coordinator Jolly Uclaray, MSN, RN, CDE, provides education, life skills and other resources to diabetes patients, their families, those who may be pre-diabetic or are at risk for diabetes. Speakers are brought in to discuss daily management of diabetes and suggest ways to prevent the disease, along with tips on diet and nutrition, and foot and eye care. For more information about the Diabetes Education Support Group, call 442-5773. For individuals who are recovering from a stroke or families and caregivers who provide care to stroke survivors, each third Wednesday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m. the Maui Health System Stroke Support Group meets to share education, encouragement and other helpful resources. Each meeting focuses on a different topic with guest speakers providing additional information on stroke education and prevention. On the third Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter holds a support group for caregivers and families of people living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Each meeting offers people a safe place to exchange practical information on caregiving challenges and solutions as well as allowing people to talk through ways of coping with their situation. a heart health fair in February, a stroke fair in May and coming up in November, a diabetes health fair. These fairs offer education, blood pressure/BMI screening and feature at least three physicians who present talks on the specific health topic. Something many may be unaware of but is quite an honor, in 2019 MMMC was the only hospital in the state of Hawaii to earn the highest recognition for heart failure care from American Heart/Stroke Association as reported in U.S. News & World Report. It received a Gold Plus Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll. Additionally, the award received for stroke care — Gold Plus Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll — was higher than that awarded last year. MMMC is consistently awarded gold or higher and is at the top in the state for quality of care in heart and stroke services. MMMC has also recently acquired a software program called Profusion Scanning. Be glad if you have that stroke here on Maui — Profusion Scanning lets the physician know the viability of the brain tissue following the stroke and whether the tissue can be salvaged. If it can, you’ll be wheeled back into Radiology and the Heart-Brain Vascular lab where the interventional radiologist can perform work to save the brain tissue. Fascinating stuff! MMMC has the capability of mapping out a patient’s lymph system using Lymphoscintigraphy, which helps physicians determine if there is metastisis from the breast cancer. Furthermore, upon treatment options, MMMC has
a nuclear medicine department (or molecular imaging), which allows a drug to be attached to a radioactive isotope so that drug can be “tracked” as it goes through your body, and doctors can see whether it gets to the organ/area it needs to go. “Doctors are discovering we have capabilities they didn’t know we had,” added McKeon. “The coconut wireless can hamper the narrative,” Public Relations and Digital Marketing Manager Mahie Wong concluded. “The information out there is either old or wrong. We are an incredible facility. If your doctor says they’re going to send you to Oahu, you need to ask, ‘Why can’t I stay here?’ ” Maui Health System and Maui Memorial Medical Center are not the hospital and facility from even five years ago.
