ink will be the theme this fall during Breast Cancer Awareness Month as Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa hosts its third annual Maui Paddle for a Cure event Oct. 1. Paddle for a Cure is a fun, noncompetitive event for stand-up, kayak and canoe paddlers along the

shoreline of Kaanapali Beach that raises funds to benefit Susan G. Komen Hawaii. The organization supports and promotes collaborations among the state’s health care providers and organizations as well as the implementation of culturally sensitive breast cancer education, awareness, prevention and treatment programs. Last year, the Hyatt more than doubled its fundraising goal, raising more than $36,000 for Susan G. Komen Hawaii, the largest

community or corporate fundraiser to benefit the organization to date, according to the resort. This year, the Hyatt seeks to raise $50,000 through all donations and registration fees. “We are incredibly honored to once again partner with Susan G. Komen Hawaii and look forward to another outstanding fundraising event in October,” said Allan Farwell, general manager at Hyatt Regency Maui. “Exceeding last year’s goal was a wonderful victory, and we’re

excited to bring our guests and community together again to increase awareness for breast cancer and raise funds for this important cause.” The event is presented in partnership with The Butterfly Effect, a worldwide movement that started on Maui in 2007 and hinges on empowering and inspiring athletic women to grow together as a community while encouraging a healthy lifestyle, local involvement and support for

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — My grandmother can do more push-ups than you. No one wants to see jiggly cellulite hanging out of a bikini. You need to make up for all those cookies you ate last night. While those kinds of drill sergeant-style putdowns and body-shaming warnings have long been a part of many fitness classes across the country, some instructors and researchers are promoting a change of message aimed at empowering clients, relieving stress and fueling students with confidence. “Body shaming and focusing on appearance and comparing yourself to other people, we absolutely know that’s harmful for women,” said Renee Engeln, a Northwestern University psychology professor who has been studying messaging in fitness classes. “The more you’re exercising to look good or to lose weight, the less you tend to enjoy it, the less you tend to stick with it. Whereas women who exercise because of how it makes them feel — healthier, stronger, less stressed — they tend to get more out of exercise and they tend to stick with it longer.” She recently surveyed hundreds of women who worked out in various types of classes and asked them to list their least favorite motivating comments. Around half said they hated comments that focused on appearance. Topping the list of loathed comments were those urging women to get a bikini body, look like a celebrity or endure punishment to atone for yesterday’s dessert. “You still go into most group fitness classes and the lowest common denominator conversation is like ‘bikini body ladies, July Fourth is around the corner, what did you eat last night?’” said Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, a New York fitness instructor and assistant professor of history at The New School who has been studying feminism and group fitness. Sadie Kurzban, owner of New York’s 305 Fitness, a hip-hop dance workout with a live DJ, says such messages from instructors are ultimately counterproductive

MCOA puts emphasis on the concept of ‘aging in place’ ith the goal of helping more seniors remain in the comfort of their own homes as they age, Maui County Office on Aging stands as the county’s resource for aging, disability and caregiving services. MCOA puts an emphasis on the concept of “aging in place,” and every service, program and product referred or implemented by the department and contracted providers is meant to help seniors, as well as people of any age who have disabilities, to lead independent lives for as long as possible. “Most seniors feel most comfortable and safe in their own homes, in the same communities they’ve lived in for many years,” said Lori Tsuhako, MCOA’s wellness coordinator. While aging can lead to a loss of independence, the aging-in-place strategy promotes adaptations that can help make it safer for people to remain in their homes. Adaptations such as the installation of grab bars, ramps, roll-in showers and doorways that accommodate wheelchairs can help reestablish independence. “When combined with additional supports (as needed) such as help with chores, meal delivery, etc., seniors tend to be more comfortable, feel safer and experience greater peace of mind,” Tsuhako said. MCOA offers a variety of programs in its efforts to promote aging in place. The department participates in the statewide Healthy Aging Partnership, a public-private program committed to improving the health and well-being of residents. It offers evidence-based health promotion and disease

The chronic disease self-management program is a peer-led service geared to helping participants learn to live better with a chronic health condition, such as high blood pressure, lupus, diabetes or arthritis. The program is a six-week commitment that offers peer support and interaction (not lectures), and educational resources at low to no cost. Participants leave each session with an action plan that focuses on what improvements they want to make. Tsuhako said that comments from participants have included, “I now understand more about my condition and why my doctor is concerned,” and, “The class helps me

to take better care of myself.” Seniors and people with chronic illnesses have praised the program for helping them stay on track with goals such as eating healthy, visiting their doctor regularly and keeping up on routine chores. Some have also used it to remind them to exercise at their Enhance Fitness classes. At Enhance Fitness, 13 classes are offered at 11 different sites across Maui and Lanai. Participants are led by highly trained instructors through aerobic, strength-training and balance exercises that help to improve and maintain their health. Unlike a regular gym, drop-ins are discouraged because EF participants make a commitment and attend classes three times per week at various community centers and churches, places that feel comfortable and safe to them. Regular fitness checks are conducted to help participants measure their progress. “Social support among participants is a real benefit of this program,” Tsuhako said.

“Good friends have been found and provide support to each other to continue being healthy.” Enhance Fitness currently has room for enrollment in Wailuku, Kihei, Paia, Lahaina and Lanai classes. For more information, contact Tsuhako at 463-3166.

Five low-calorie snacks that stray from the norm

ummer in Hawaii means long beach days and soaking up the rays outdoors. The idyllic picture of bronze skin and light, sun-kissed, mermaid hair are signs of the popular season of clear skies and hot weather. The intense ultraviolet rays from the sun, however, can have damaging effects, especially on the face, which is often exposed even when performing daily tasks such as driving or walking to and from your car. Proper care will help fortify the health of your skin and may enhance its

beautiful summer glow. For a limited time, Spa Helani, a Heavenly Spa by Westin located at the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas, is offering a special Berry Facial Treatment that includes a sweet blend of organic acai, blueberry and raspberry ingredients. The ritual begins with a skin-firming acai cleanser, followed by a gentle buffing with strawberryrhubarb dermafoliant that will clear and refine. Nourishing phytonutrients, antioxidants and vitamins found in the botanical acai

masque and moisturizer help to minimize the aging effects of the sun, deeply hydrating and reinvigorating the skin. The application of the NU-Face microcurrent device leaves guests with a noticeably smooth and radiant complexion. The Berry Facial Treatment is a 50-minute service and is offered exclusively to Hawaii residents at $99, excluding service charge and tax, now through Aug. 31. For more information or to make reservations, call Spa Helani at 662-2644.

nacking may not seem like part of a healthy diet, but the right snacks can help men and women fight midday hunger without contributing to unwanted weight gain. The following low-calorie snacks won’t compromise adults’ efforts to maintain healthy weights, and they might prove useful as men and women look for that extra boost during the day. 1. Popcorn: Popcorn is low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber. Popcorn also is high in polyphenols, which are antioxidants that have been linked to reductions in heart disease and certain cancers. Air-popped

popcorn that is prepared without any oil is your best option, as a cup of such popcorn may only add up to about 30 calories. Avoid adding salt or butter or purchasing premade popcorn that is heavy on both, as both ingredients can compromise the health benefits of popcorn. 2. Nonfat Greek yogurt: Though it’s not as low in calories as popcorn, nonfat Greek yogurt is still a lowcalorie snack that’s high in

protein. Nonfat Greek yogurt may have as much as two times the amount of protein as traditional yogurts, and that’s beneficial because protein helps you feel full longer, which should help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid overeating. Nonfat Greek yogurt also tends to have less sugar than traditional yogurts, and its creamy texture gives many people the impression that they are eating something decadent. 3. Hummus: Made primarily from ground chickpeas, hummus is a proteinand fiber-rich snack that has been linked to a host of
