A letter from the Publisher KATHY FOX PUBLISHER | EDITOR IN CHIEF Well, hello Maury County and welcome 2021! Let me introduce myself as the publisher of Maury County Living magazine. Like many of you, my path changed during 2020 that led me to embark on my new publishing journey with Maury County Living lifestyle magazine. For the past five years I have published a Nashville tourism magazine and when travel was shut down last year, I seized the opportunity to launch a lifestyle magazine in Maury County. I have truly been humbled by the show of support from the community, residents, and businesses of Maury County while preparing to launch the magazine and have thoroughly enjoyed these past three months exploring Maury County. Seeing the beautiful soul of the community, especially during a pandemic, creates such hope. For this reason, the magazine was created just for you and is bursting with content created right here in Maury County. In each issue, articles will showcase the talents and knowledge from local business owners and residents complemented by beautiful photos. Since we all spent a lot of time in our homes last year our cover feature for this issue, New Year, New Home on page 18, focuses on creating a pleasing aesthetic for your living space. We also included a few other articles with decorating tips and even a full-blown remodel. For those in need of a vacation, we have you coved with at a staycation in Music City and for the health minded, we have outlined the benefits of compounding pharmacies for a healthier you and your pet. I cannot begin to express my appreciation for those who contributed to this publication whether it be through advertising, photography, or providing content — thank you from the bottom of my heart. My hope is to inspire you in 2021. Our mission at Maury County Living magazine is to connect the residents of Maury County to local businesses through a collection of

This painting is an experimentation with color, texture and mark making that progressed into an abstract landscape. The fine black line gives the

impression of a barbed wire fence meandering along a Tennessee hillside and, although not planned, the white image created on the lower right could be interpreted as a mule. How fitting for our great little town!

Optimism in 2021

As we celebrate the start of a new year, we can all agree 2021 brings us hope as we look toward the future. When we reflect upon last year’s trials and the disruption presented to our daily lives, we can find good spirits this time of year seeing happiness around Maury County as we continue to remain optimistic about the future. While COVID-19 may have changed how we spend our time and given us many new hobbies and projects, living in Maury County remains special. Our residents have found ways to traverse the pandemic through innovative outdoor and socially-distanced events and by supporting businesses and neighbors through responsible gatherings. The people of our county are the foundation of the community and, as a collective, create a diverse and innovative place to plant their roots and call home. This did not change in 2020. Although we cannot foresee the future of our national economy, we are fortunate to live

ANDY OGLES, MAYOR MAURY COUNTY

in Maury County. In 2020, there were 37 ribbon cuttings in Maury County, 784 new jobs added, $1.8B in capital investments were announced, and $126K in COVID-19 relief grants were awarded to small businesses, helping them during these challenging times. During the upcoming 2021 year, we will continue to remain fiscally responsible and focused locally as we manage growth and opportunity in Maury County. Maury County features more than 240 beautiful acres of natural recreation — it was ranked as “one of the best places to live” by Livability.com, and Columbia has been on Southern Living’s list as “one of the best small towns in the south.” As we move forward together in 2021, remember to value the things that make your quality of life in Maury County so great — family, friends, and community. Let’s continue to support one another by making Maury County better than ever this year. From my family to yours, wishing you a healthy and happy new year! Mayor Andy Ogles

— FOR YOUR HEALTH —

Natural and Healthier Options

BENEFITS

OF COMPOUNDING PHARMACY By Dr. Jonathan Bain Very few patients and providers realize all the options of

“ OUR PROMISE IS QUALITY-DRIVEN SERVICE, AND OUR FOCUS IS TO ENSURE AFFORDABLE ACCESS TO THE MEDICATIONS YOU NEED AT A PRICE YOU WILL LOVE.”

medication therapy available to them. One of these hidden secrets is the use of compounding pharmacies, which are a

sub-specialty of regular pharmacies. Retail pharmacies order and dispense commercially prepared medications, while

compounding pharmacies make most of their medications from scratch at their location, allowing for customized medication therapies. Compounding pharmacies are

regulated by the same state boards of pharmacy that retail pharmacies are governed by, but are also held to higher

regulatory standards ensuring safe and high-quality products. Similarly, compounding pharmacists are fully licensed

practitioners preparing the medications using the latest technologies and formulas.

active ingredients from compounded prescriptions are the

same used in commercially available products, however, the other inactive ingredients can be drastically altered. This is

significant for people with allergies or intolerances such as

lactose, or specific dyes. In a compounding pharmacy, many medications can be made without these specific inactive ingredients and some compounding pharmacies also

specialize in making products more or completely natural — a

much healthier option. In addition, ingredients that have been pulled off the commercial market can still be produced with the active ingredient at a compounding pharmacy.

BENEFIT 2 — Lower Medication Cost: The upward trend in

❱❱

medication cost will continue as newer medications coming

out are more and more complex. Compounding pharmacies

make their medications from the raw powders. In most cases, buying these in bulk they can significantly lower the cost of the medications. Some compounding pharmacies check

insurances for possible medication coverage, but most plans do not cover compounded prescriptions. This has led to a

lot of compounding centers running as a cash-pay business, but in many instances, a compound pharmacy is still less expensive than copays for similar commercial products. 16

BENEFIT 3 — Customized Dosages: Most medications are studied and

commercially produced in doses that are a one-size-fits-all dose. However,

sometimes there is a need to provide patients with doses or dosage forms that are not available commercially. Many people think their medication is

only available in a capsule or tablet form, when in fact, certain medications can also be given as a liquid, topical cream, suppository, troche, etc. With

extensive experience in changing between these different forms, compound pharmacies will make the medication fit the needs of the patient.

BENEFIT 1 — Healthier and Natural Options: The main

❱❱

❱❱

BENEFIT 4 — Improved Communication: Pharmacists used to be one of the

most accessible and trusted healthcare workers, but with the demands of a

modern-day retail pharmacy, that has changed. Compounding pharmacists must communicate with the providers and patients to find what they

prefer or what has or has not worked in the past since so many things can be altered and manipulated. This opens the lines of communication and improves patients’ experience. ❱❱

BENEFIT 5 — It Tastes Good: A significant part of medications for children

and animals is the importance of flavoring. With access to hundreds of

flavors, such as tutti-frutti, strawberry-banana, cotton candy, beef, and crispy bacon, finding options to better help these patients take their medication

will make a difference. With the ability to change doses, dosage forms, and ingredients, compounding pharmacies are the leaders in all medication

therapies for veterinary and pediatric patients. Next time you are prescribed a medication or are looking over what you currently take, reach out to a

compounding pharmacy to learn what options they can offer you. We all

deserve the ability to get the best therapy for ourselves and those we love. n DR. JONATHAN BAIN, PHARMD, BCCCP, BCPS , is the head pharmacist and owner of Rx Compound Centre bringing 15 years of pharmacy experience to the team. He was raised in Columbia, Tennessee, and is excited to be offering specialized medication therapy locally here in Columbia. Finding the right medication, dose, and formulation is what he strives for with everyone.

New Year, New Home:

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME FEEL

BRAND NEW By Kathryn York Well, 2021 has arrived, and it might just be among the most welcomed new years of all time. After the ups, downs, uncertainties, and anticipations of 2020, it’s safe to say that we can all use a fresh start, right? While the start of a new year traditionally prompts many individuals to set new goals or

resolutions for the year ahead, these goals often center around careers, dreams, or even travel. However, after spending a lot more time at home during the past year, maybe this is the year to give your living quarters some fresh attention. So, what does that look like? Well, to ease the burden of goal setting for you, here are three simple new year’s resolutions to implement at home. If you’ve been looking for the gentle nudge to finally make some adjustments around the house, these tips will set you on your way to creating a home aesthetic you and your future guests will truly enjoy.

Resolution # 1

Be Open to a Few Simple Updates Sure, you’ve curated an atmosphere in your home that’s familiar. Whether it’s decorative accessories that you’ve had for years, furniture that was passed down through generations, or kitchen gadgets that still get the job done, we can all admit that an occasional update (or better yet, upgrade) is always good.

First, keep in mind that updating your space doesn’t always involve a large budget. In fact, many home updates can actually be done by rearranging or reworking items you already have. Of course, it never hurts to add a few new elements to the mix to really make a statement. If you’re wondering a good way to start, consider a fresh coat of paint on your walls to lighten up your room and cover up the everyday wears and tears of life. If your furniture or window treatments are darker or bolder in tone, choose a more neutral color palette for your walls. On the contrary, if your furniture elements are neutral, don’t be afraid to play with color. Throughout your house, consider updating your photos and frames. A careful balance of past and present memories is good for the soul, reminding us all of what’s most important in life — people and relationships. Also, don’t neglect your shelves. Whether it’s styling your shelves with a mixture of elements that include books, pottery, artwork, or photography, some intentional shelf arrangement efforts can make a living space feel brand new. Finally, among the simplest of ways to freshen up a space and make it feel inviting is to add live plants and natural textures. Not only will your space come truly “alive” by adding some green foliage, but you can insert a dash of color with baskets, planters, and textiles like rugs and throw pillows. 20

TIP ❱❱ Identify three or four cheeses and an array of cured meats that you know will be available at your local grocery market. This will help ease the pressure of “what to cook” and prepare the way for an informal social evening.

Resolution #2

Prepare the Way for Guests Having guests in your home can be intimidating — especially if you’re rushing to get the house ready or stressing over what to cook. But, while most invitations to welcome friends and family into your home come with an assumption that your time together will occur over a sit-down meal, that’s not necessarily your only option anymore. If you’re not the best cook (no shame, ladies), don’t put the pressure of preparing a formal meal on your shoulders. If done well, there is beauty in simplicity. Instead of gathering recipes from cookbooks or scurrying around for the “family meal” take-out menus, make an effort in 2021 to have two or three “go-to” options for hearty or savory charcuterie boards that will be pleasing to all guests and easy on you. There are numerous books and resource guides to help you build a beautiful and balanced board. The best part is, you don’t have to follow a recipe. Rather, you can get ideas from photos within the books or build an exact replica of one pictured. Also remember that once the food starts to disappear, you want a beautiful board as a visually pleasing base for guests to see.

One of the key elements of entertaining is preparation. You don’t want to run out of food, but rather, you want to have a little bit left over. Make sure coffee is brewing (always have a decaf option when entertaining in the evening hours), wine bottles are open, and utensils and napkins are out and easily accessible. You don’t want people digging through your kitchen drawers in search of a fork or a wine opener. All in all, remember that being prepared means anticipating what your guests might need.

Resolution #3

Tidy Up and Get Organized There’s a reason that home improvement shows like Netflix’s Tidying Up with Marie Kondo have become so popular in recent years. People desire organization, but they often don’t know where to begin or fear that they can’t part with certain items that would lend to an organized space. With busy work schedules, family demands, and all the many things that life can toss our way, our homes can easily become cluttered without us even realizing it. If you’re ready to make 2021 the year to finally clear the clutter, resolve to start from the inside out. Tackle closets and drawers first. Whether it’s purging clothing items that you haven’t touched in years or tossing expired canned or boxed food items, organization can’t happen until you’ve made some essential room for it. For items that are often just laying around the house like blankets, books, and toys, consider adding baskets, bins, or even trunks or ottomans that not only function as storage but also offer a pleasing aesthetic.

JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2021

Finally, keep in mind that the old adage, “out of sight, out of mind” doesn’t have to apply in kitchens and bathrooms. This one is often hardest for the guys and kids. But, keeping your countertops clear until you’re ready to use them is one of the most effective paths toward organizational accountability. In the bathroom, invest in under-cabinet totes for toiletries to be put away after use. In the kitchen, remember that less is more on your countertops. You can combine visual appeal and practicality on your counter space through stylish small appliances like SMEG brand coffee makers or toasters. All in all, don’t underestimate how a few small steps at tidying up your space can go a long way toward a less cluttered life. n KATHRYN YORK is the owner and curator of Smith & York Company, a modern home boutique located on the

The Decision to

Go Online

As all small business owners know, expect the unexpected! Harmony Jones, owner of Fireflies Boutique in Spring Hill, knows the challenges of being a small business owner and making some hard decisions during these uncertain times. “First, I promised my kids I’d always be a mom first. With all

the shutdowns, remote learning, and quarantine, my kids not only suffered the loss of life as they know it, but I was unable to be everything I needed to be in this uncertain time. The Lord promised me that if I put my family before finances, he would always provide. I’m going forward in faith knowing that being a mother is the most important calling I will ever have,” Jones explained. With this in mind, the decision to move Fireflies online was made. With the trendy pop up shops providing the opportunity for in-person shopping, the online boutique gives the chance for the women Fireflies serves through business to reach a broad network. “Who knows the future of small business as we know it, who knows the direction of our country. I am not going to lie, this one sat heavy on my heart and I pray success over the vendors who rely on me for their income. I hold such a responsibility on my shoulders to this community of women who have counted on me for so many years,” Jones described. “This flip in how we do business is a scary leap. I hope this community, as well as the world, finds our little collection and chooses to shop small.” The brick and mortar home to the Fireflies Boutique was built in 1840, and over the years it has housed many people, businesses, success, failure, heartache, and love. Its walls tell a story and the grounds where the foundation lays have a history. “She needs a makeover and to be shown the love that I feel she gives to me. She has seen me through some of my proudest moments, as well as some of my deepest loss. In January 2019, I was able to put my name on the deed of this gorgeous home and just 3 days later my dear husband took his last step onto her porch. He passed that day, and these walls saw me through it,” Jones recalled. “These walls watched a community of strangers serve me like I have never seen before. In those moments, my faith was restored. His spirit and laughter echoes within these walls. His passion comes alive when you walk through the front door. Often visitors will comment on the spirit felt in this home and how happy these old walls and floors make them.” Fireflies successfully moved to the online endeavor in December 2020, giving Jones and her family the time needed to resurrect the beauty of the old home that has served them so well over the years. “I cannot wait to welcome you back inside, maybe a little differently than before, but my home will always be in Spring Hill, Tennessee.” Jones concluded with a smile. n Follow Fireflies on Instagram @tnfireflies and Facebook @fireflies for updates, pop ups, and online shopping. #shoplocal

Cozy and Colorful Pillows

4 TIPS ON HOW TO DECORATE WITH PILLOWS BY BECKY SMITH

A Diamond in the Rough 26

JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2021

We all spent plenty of time in our homes last year, whether it was working in the new home office or simply staying in. During that time, you probably considered giving at least one room in your house a facelift, but not quite a full remodel. The simplest way to create a new esthetic is by adding or changing your accents pillows. Review these 4 quick tips before you invest in new pillows and learn the tricks of the trade to give that room new charm and appeal.

#1 Choose the Right Insert Typically, your insert should be 2" bigger than the cover. This insures you have a plump pillow. Your pillow fiber will also determine if you have a full or slouchy pillow. Polyester inserts are typically less expensive and will allow for a full pillow. The downside to polyester filled pillows is that they are usually stiff and not comfortable. Using a down/feather filled insert creates a higher end look with the bonus of comfort. Plus, using a downfilled insert is the only way to achieve a “pillow chop”.

#2 Layer the Look Grouping your pillows on your sofa will always look better when you layer the sizes. There isn’t one right way to do this, but a good rule for most sofas would be to start with a 22" or 24" pillow and then adding a 20” pillow in front. When you have a larger sofa or a sectional you can add in an 18" pillow or a lumbar. Usually, you can get away with one pillow in chairs. Most chairs look best with a 20"-22" pillow or a lumbar the width of the chair. If you have larger chairs, try a 20" pillow layered with a 15" lumbar. MAURYCOUNTYLIVING.COM

|

27

#3 Pattern and Texture As with all textiles, mixing pattern, color, and texture properly is key to creating the best design. Large patterns work best on the larger pillows, while unique details added to smaller pillows and lumbar pillows will make a big statement. Once you have picked your larger pattern, bring in a compatible pillow in a solid or smaller print. Adding a small pillow or a lumbar with a fun texture or detail such as trim, tassels, or even feathers can elevate your room by adding more character.

Accent pillows come in all price ranges. It is good to know what to expect before you start shopping. Less expensive poly-filled pillows are great for outdoor spaces, guest bedrooms, and, in

#4 Be Creative and Do Not Skimp Accent pillows are just that, accents. Use them to bring in color and bold patterns. Remember, this is how you are redefining your room, so make it count. If you have been living with gray accents, now is your opportunity to add in some jewel tones in rich colors

general, rooms that aren’t depending on the pillows to pull the design together. If you are redecorating and trying to really make a statement with your accent pillows, which is easy to do, expect to invest in your pillows. A 22"-24" down/feather inserted pillows will start around $75 and can go as high as $300. Look for pillows with a quality insert and exceptional fabrics for the best look. n

Rome, Florence, and Milan. With 40 years of experience cooking in Italy and running award-winning restaurants on both the east and west coast, chef and owner, Matthew Antonovich, proudly opened the Mozzarella Bar in November 2020 in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

E AT E R Y

SPRING HILL MATTHEW ANTONOVICH — CHEF & OWNER

This Italian Eatery captures the true essence of Italian history — cooking from scratch each day and serving only the freshest seasonal ingredients combined with Italian imported items. With its open-kitchen concept showcasing the ‘Pastaria” Pasta Factory, guests can watch pasta being made fresh daily. The pasta served represents the 20 distinct culinary regions of Italy and are complemented with sauces Chef learned to make while working in Italy that promise to excite the palate and tease the senses. While Chef Antonovich worked in Italy, he discovered the mozzarella bars of Rome and designed the Mozzarella Bar counter with imported Carrera marble — the same marble Michelangelo carved. The namesake “Mozzarella Bar” offers patrons a chance to see fresh mozzarella prepared and handpulled at the marble counter, as well as other Italian antipasti and salami platters — accompanied with the best cheeses imported weekly from Italy! Italy also inspired Chef Antonovich to create the perfect pizzeria and new style, “NEO,” Neapolitan Pizzeria. His upbringing in the Bronx, New York, plus training in California and working in Italy helped him define his perfect pizzeria. Respecting the traditions of the Verace Pizza Napolitana, a style of pizza found in Naples, and being true to the American farm-to-table movement, pizzas are original with no boundaries. Chef’s classic Neapolitan Double Zero dough is guarded under strict control during the making and fermentation process to ensure a crispy and airy crust. To further authenticate the pizzas, a Morello Forni oven was imported from Italy to bake them. For those guests who wish to linger before or after dinner, the Bacari “Venice Style” coffee and wine bar is a delight. A relaxing bar where one can sample wines by the glass, handcrafted Italian sodas, or Muletown coffee drink specialties. To satisfy that sweet tooth, tasty gelato or one of the chef’s Italianinspired classic desserts can be ordered. The attentive staff is dedicated to serving guests in a warm, intimate, and friendly environment and looks forward to seeing you soon at the Mozzarella Bar Italian Eatery for a delicious scratch made meal. — COLUMBIA FIXER-UPPER —

A Diamond in the Rough By Katie Baker

Have you ever wanted to try your remodeling skills and flip a house? Perhaps in 2021 you are looking to buy a fixer-upper that will someday be your dream home. In 2011, my husband and I embarked on our fixer-upper journey when we bought an “As-Is” home in Columbia and began the renovation process to make it our forever home. Now in real estate terms, “As-Is” means the seller does not want to fix anything knowingly broken on the house or anything that may be called out as needing to be repaired during the inspection phase of a contract. A buyer may still request to perform inspections in their contract, but the seller is letting it be known on the front end they would like to sell the home in whatever current condition it is in at the time of the sale. Before we purchased our ‘diamond in the rough’ house, it was revealed during the initial walk through the home needed cosmetic repairs top to bottom as well as routine maintenance. Everything discovered so far had been the reason previous buyers said “No” to the home, but when we walked through the house, I saw a kitchen Maury County had 134 homes that were noted as being sold “As-Is” in the 2019 MLS system.

large enough to hold my big Italian family while marveling at the 10 feet coffered ceilings and imagined what this house would look like with thoughtful, strategic updates over time. Many people find it difficult to see past the clutter, envisioning what it could become. Therefore, it is important to work together with a realtor to determine if the home will meet the needs of your family and what the return on the investment could be after remodeling.

WHERE TO BEGIN A renovation plan is essential after purchasing a fixer upper to help keep the project on budget. The first thing we did after closing on our house was walk through every room making notes on what needed to be done and what items we wanted to update to reflect our own style. It is important

to realize what repairs should be addressed first especially if they are damaging or degrading the home value. Then once repairs are identified, it is easier to budget for the style improvements. We also wanted to set realistic time expectations for the overhaul process. We have been in our

house 9 years now but gave ourselves 18 years of grace to realize it was not going to be completed all at once, which took the stress, both mental and financial, off our shoulders. The first project on the list was to paint the entire inside of the house, which is one of the most affordable updates especially when painting is a do-it-yourself undertaking. When choosing interior colors for a home there are several factors to consider, but most importantly is whether the home is a long-term home or a short-term flip. A flip home is best updated with neutral colors that will appeal to a variety of buyers, where a long-term home owner can decorate to their tastes with the understanding bold choices may need to be neutralized when it is time to sell. Tub refinishing by Metal Revival.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED It is common during renovations to discover unexpected repairs, which can affect the overall cost of a project. To help manage these unanticipated costs, make sure to have back-up design selections and reuse existing items whenever possible. The second project we scheduled for the home was a simple update of the master bath, however, an unexpected leak in the shower turned it into a complete renovation.

Renovation vs Remodel A renovation changes the look and feel of a room by updating the aesthetics- paint, cabinetry, light fixtures, floors etc. A remodel changes the layout or function of the room. For example, removing walls or turning a small bedroom into a bathroom. The original travertine bathroom included warped vanities, a shower missing two walls, and a copper surround tub in need of refinishing. Upon removal of the copper bath surround, a crack in the tub insert was discovered making it impossible to reinstall. It was at this point, we made the decision to redesign the room as a classic, neutral space accented by the original copper tub surround and gilt mirrors demonstrating the best-laid plans can go awry during a renovation. The final touches were nearly done on the master bath when the unexpected happened again. A contractor accidentally hit a water pipe while installing the new vanities, which sent gallons of water pouring into the downstairs living space. This meant addressing the main living area floors quickly moved to the top of the list. 40

THE FLOORS The great debate on floor improvements is when to update them, before or after moving into a home. Before moving in means a buyer has a blank slate to work with. In our case, refinishing the downstairs hardwoods and replacing carpet upstairs with hardwood floors meant moving out of our home. On a positive note, the move out did allow us to reconfigure a wall between the den and playroom to provide more space for entertaining. Tackling the floors and the den may not have been the next projects in line, but it still contributed to our final vision for the home. TIP ❱❱ Not all floor installation costs are the same. Tile and brick have increased labor costs compared to wood, carpet and laminate flooring. In a fixer upper home one project often leads to another as a homeowner attempts to cohesively redesign their space. Because we have a long-range plan for our home, we were able to easily pivot from one project to the next by consulting the original renovation plans as our fixer upper adventure continues. Purchasing a fixer upper may be a challenging concept for a novice buyer, but with the right guidance and ability to see a home’s potential lies the opportunity to turn a good deal into a great investment. n KATIE BAKER is a local Realtor and owner of the Katie Baker Group with RE/MAX Encore in downtown Columbia. — NEARBY NASHVILLE —

An Easy Staycation

IN MUSIC CITY By Megan Zink While the world may feel a little different right now, it’s still important to get out and explore — even if it’s near your own backyard. Head to Music City, where the sights, smells and sounds (especially sounds) Nashville, Tennessee has to offer will whisk(ey) you away from routine and inject a little country energy into your day-to-day. The Noelle Nashville boutique art hotel is in the heart of downtown — just a short jaunt from Broadway, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the state capitol and many other points of interest. It’s also situated directly on Printer’s Alley — a oncebustling print and publishing hub home to 36 companies at one point, which later segued into one of the hottest night club and live music scenes in the city.

display in the hallways, common areas and other spots. The hotel itself is a work of art — a gorgeous mix of art deco and mid-century modern finishes and décor, no detail spared. And don’t worry — those details also extend to the culinary curiosities on premise. Head upstairs for sweeping views and a sip or three at Rare Bird, or to the main lobby for a libation at the Trade Room. If you’d like more than a liquid lunch, you can head down to the Makeready L&L restaurant — a nod to the proximity of Printer’s Alley — or grab a pick-me-up at Drug Store Coffee before perusing the curated and crafted goods at the Keep Shop or heading out on the town.

PRINTER’S ALLEY IS A FAMOUS ALLEY IN DOWNTOWN NASHVILLE, BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH AVENUES, AND RUNS FROM UNION STREET TO COMMERCE STREET. THE SECTION OF THE ALLEY BETWEEN UNION AND CHURCH STREET IS THE HOME OF THE NIGHTCLUB DISTRICT WHICH DATES BACK TO THE 1940S. While you may come for the music, you’ll definitely want to stay for the eats. It also makes an excellent excuse for wandering through all the different neighborhoods and great fuel for shopping. Head to Germantown for coffee in a brightly-lit converted garage at Barista Parlor (but get there early, they sell out quick!) before poking into local Abednego Boutique or strolling past the colorful murals of the area. If you’re looking for some BBQ — head to the ‘pit’ at one of the many Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joints; hit up the location near SoBro so you can visit Two Old Hippies after. Browse the vintage-inspired threads and handmade goods, or stick around for a show (or to peruse the amazing guitars). In the mood to treat yourself (this year, aren’t we all!?)? Head down to the heart of downtown to Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse, the tried and true purveyor of celebratory meals. Tickle your taste buds while their piano player tinkles the ivories — be sure to stick around for the musical main event! Other foodie havens worth checking out (or taking out) — Butcher & Bee, Biscuit Love and Killebrew Coffee.

Obviously, you can’t come to Music City and not check out the music scene. You can head to nearly any spot on Broadway for a great show — but it might

be worth moseying down Printer’s Alley and into a less busy but very much authentic spot. Looking for something besides music to do? Marathon Village is a repurposed car factory filled with a cool blend of antique machinery and electronics along with shops, restaurants, a distillery and a comedy club worth motoring across town. In a more creative mood? Head to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the glamour, but stay for the Hatch Show Print and tour. Seriously — it’s an absolutely can’t-miss when in Nashville. Hatch Show is a still a fully-functioning studio that uses NO digital technology in their designs and hasn’t purchased a new font or intentionally aged their blocks since 1932 — so all of their work is good, oldfashioned authenticity. You also get to create your own letterpress print on a tour. Whether a quick 48 hours or a long weekend getaway, Nashville is the perfect place for a staycation! n
