Road Ramblings by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President

T

he summer heat is upon us. There are also a number of hot indoor and Porsche-related activities to do this month. First, there is the Sunday, August 10th outing to the Omni Theatre and dinner social. Maverick Region has arranged an outing to see the new “Top Speed” film at the Omni Theatre in the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. This film features speed in several forms including behind the wheel of the Porsche 996 GT3 Supercup driven and narrated by Lucas Luhr, factory Porsche race driver. After the show there will be a buffet dinner at Blue Mesa. This should be a great get-together that even includes a Porsche parking corral provided by the Will Rogers folks. This is a great venue in which to bring the entire family and friends. There is also a two-day tour to Nacogdoches on the 23rd and 24th, where you can beat the heat inside the car (if you’ve got A/C), or drive fast enough to stay cool. Last month’s issue of Slipstream was devoted to our Memorial Day weekend Club Race. This month’s will feature coverage and reports about the annual Porsche Parade held in Tampa, Florida. Next year, of course, Parade will be held right here in Fort Worth. The headquarters will be the Worthington Hotel in downtown Fort Worth with an Autocross, a Drivers Education, and a Club Race held out at Texas Motor Speedway. For this year’s 48th annual Parade in Tampa, your Slipstream Editor, Matt Platts, his co-pilot (and

at Parade and on display at the Concours. Excellence Magazine’s most recent issue talks about how they can now be legally imported into the USA 15 years later and how you can buy one. The display of historic cars included several racecars (Martini 935, Gulf 917K) to admire. The cars competing in the Concours were a fabulous show themselves. A 904 GTS, an un-raced 934, and a 356 (that was so clean you could eat off the inner fender-wells) were the tip of the iceberg. I was constantly being reprimanded for getting too close to the cars and drooling on them leaving water spots for the owners to clean up. Of course the DE at Sebring on Wednesday was fabulous. I spent the night before at Chateau Élan - Don Panoz’s hotel on the grounds of the track overlooking the famous hairpin turn. With 88 cars on a 3.7-mile track, there was ample (is there ever too much?) track time. I spent six 30 minutes sessions in cars - five as a driver, and one as a passenger. Alas, I needed to be home by Sunday, so I had to miss the farewell banquet on Saturday night as I was putting the pedal to the metal. Maverick Region, won the President’s Parade Trophy for the region having the greatest number of cars present (given the distance traveled from the region to the Parade venue). In addition, there were about 50 Mavericks in attendance, and as a region, took a large number of trophies home for Concours, Rally, Autocross, and Tech-quiz. Congratulations to you all. It was great being in attendance with all these great folks, and I can’t wait until next year. Till next monthkeep the shiny side up and the dirty side down on the road.

little brother) Billy and I caravanned together. He brought his 924S via trailer, and I brought my Boxster S on a trailer. Many people asked me why I trailered the Boxster rather than drive it? Well, with a set of tires for the autocross and Sebring DE, plus the supplies to prepare the car for the Concours, plus my luggage and a few tools, even the twotrunked Boxster is too small. I planned to (and did) enter several events. We left Friday morning before daylight and drove all day stopping near Destin, Florida that night. I can tell you that I never drove in so many tropical rainstorms and floods in all my years of driving. The second day had to get better. It did, the weather was better for the drive. We picked up three more Mavericks driving their cars- Ted Morgan and Bob Knight in Boxsters, and the Breithaupts in their 3.2 liter Carrera. Our caravan had lunch in Gainesville and arrived at the Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Florida in the mid-afternoon on Saturday. Parade is a week packed with activities. I especially enjoyed the Concours. If you’ll recall, I’ve mentioned in previous columns that I’d never even seen a real 959 in person. Well, there were two of them

Curves Ahead by Matt Platts, Editor

W

ow, what a turnout for Mavericks at the 2003 Parade! We were very well represented and cleaned up nicely in the awards department, too. I ended up getting 3rd place in my autocross group, I am quite happy with that. I would be even happier if my clutch hadn’t decided to throw in the towel at the end of the last lap. Good thing I trailered down instead of driving. Now I get to sell that trailer I bought so I can pay for a new clutch. Oh well, that’s just the way things go. I had a great time at Parade, as did everyone who I talked to. There were sooo many things going on every day, you really had to plan your activities carefully. I also was able to spend some time with my family while in Florida. My little brother, Billy, really enjoyed checking out all of the cool Porsches at Saddlebrook too. He fared well in at the kid’s activities by winning one of the electric radio-control cars that Yokohama provided as part of

their sponsorship of the kids events. He already has big modification plans for his new car and expects to “run” it next year at our own Parade in Fort Worth. Now that we are in the heat of summer, it’s time to take a little break from our sometimes-busy driving schedule. But keep an eye on the calendar because we have a Time Trial and a Drivers Education coming up in September. I hope to have my car back in working order for those events. We’ll see how it goes. Maverick Region also has some great tours coming up, including a tour to Nacogdoches in late August, Palo Pinto in September, then Arkansas in October. If you have never been on one of Ted’s tours, now’s your chance. The one-day tours are great for getting out and giving your Porsche a good shake-down run, and the weekend tours give you plenty of seat time. My first tour was an Arkansas tour a few years back, the roads and scenery up there are just wonderful. I don’t think you could find a better place for a road trip within short day’s drive of the metroplex.

Maverick Minutes by Mimi Spreen

T

he July Board meeting was held at the home of Lanean Hughes on Tuesday 7/8/03.

The attendees were: Lanean Hughes, Noby Takahashi, Dennis Chamberlain, Teri and Charlie Davis, Wendy and James Shoffit, Keith Olcha, Lisa and Mark Steele, Mike Brodigan, Matt Platts, Cody Sears, Bob Knight, Michael Wingfield, Joel Nannis, Joe McGlohen, Jan Mayo and Mimi Spreen. Keith called the meeting to order at 7:05 and began with a 'Round the Room: Bob Knight - Financials are looking ok.

Joel - First set of letters were sent out via email to those members who aren't renewing and some of the names came back as undeliverable. Next month, he will send out letters via snail mail. We have over 1300 Slipstreams being mailed out including members, sponsors and advertisers. Michael - DE registered people up to Saturday morning and still had openings. Many other activities were in conflict with this date, including Parade, which is why the numbers were low. Lanean - Bobby Rodriguez appreciated seeing this issue of Slipstream. Boardwalk is letting Lanean use a Cayenne for the McKinney Library concours.

Matt - July Slipstream will mail on 7/9. Matt also talked about Slipstream preparation and printing timetables. We will begin using new communication procedures with Ussery Printing in an effort to get Slipstream into member’s hands earlier each month.

Mimi - Post Parade party is scheduled for Sat. July 26 and so far have no RSVP's. A paper was passed so people could sign up for this social as well as the August social at the OMNI and dinner at Blue Mesa.

James - As discussed at previous meetings, we need a display for Parade autocross and also Maverick events. A sample board was shown with what will appear on the board including size of display numbers and brightness/ability to see numbers from cars. A motion was made for Charlie/James to buy this display subsequent to our demo if we like it and motion was approved.

Mike Brodigan - One new 1/2 page ad has been added. It is now renewal time, so advertisers will be contacted about renewing. Mike also requested that we publish our financial statement in Slipstream again as we have done in the past.

Mark - TT went well. The next one is Sept 6th at Mineral Wells.

Keith - Our intention is to have Board meetings at local dealerships to promote sponsorship and to introduce our board to them.

Joe - Safety issue - moving corner stations at MSR was discussed and Joe is working on with track owner and staff. This will be discussed at length at next DE meeting. Eric Erz is building a storage box for the radios which will cost about $100.00.

Jan - Brought back bunches of stuff from Tampa Parade that we will be using for ours. It will need to be gone through and put in a central location. A separate storage unit was voted on to house only Parade paraphernalia, Matt had researched pricing.

Charlie - Truxter was checked out and found to be in need of some repairs. Brakes, shocks and tires have all been fixed or replaced.

Motion to adjourn was made at 9:07, seconded and passed.

Jeff Atkins, who could be the tallest Maverick member in history, was somehow able to squeeze into his 1988 911 to come to Champps. Mark Gluck advised Jeff that in a Boxster, height is no problem, because in the three and a half years that Mark has had his Boxster S, he has only had the top up for five minutes.

he wet and wild weather on June 12 kept a lid on the happy hour turnout. The rain had ceased before we started, but there was standing water on the edges of the Champps patio from the late afternoon’s wind and rain. On the bright side, 25% of the 34 attendees were new members.

Father’s Day Picnic by Jean & Dave Frick

About 40 adults and a dozen children (in and out of the pool) enjoyed a beautiful day, good food, outstanding companionship, and a casual concours. There were 5 cars polished and

...After a lot of fun and considerable splashing of water ... gleaming across the back of the yard. All were a glorious sight to behold, but when voting was complete, 1st Place went to the 1974 911S owned by Michael and Michele DeJong. A close 2nd went to the 1994 Speedster owned by Alan and Linda Bambina. Arriving after the judging was complete were David and Sonya Flanders in their red 1964 356. Another highlight of the afternoon was the tossing of water balloons. After a lot of fun and considerable splashing of water there was a tie – winners were father and son Joel and Ray Nannis, and brothers Karl and Erich Gluck. Father Mark Gluck joined his sons for a three-way exhibition –tossing around three balloons at a time.

There was much talk about the upcoming Parade in Florida and we were introduced to Aubrey Sutton. She has a rare distinction – she will attend her 21st Parade, even though she is only 20 (she was 11 months old at her 1st Parade). A huge round of applause to the Caseys for hosting this event again and again. Matter of fact, rumor has it that they bought their place especially for Maverick Region. A sign on the door said “Tour of the house --$. 25”. Since we had never seen the “before”, Doris explained how each year between picnics they had changed or added to the house. Her tour included her awesome collection of pineapples. We were impressed by the wonderful decoration throughout the house, and can’t wait till next year to check out the changes and additions. Joel Nannis prepares to get wet! Photo by Charlie Davis

T

he 15th Annual Father’s Day Picnic was held June 15th at the Copper Canyon home of Dave and Doris Casey. This was the first time we had attended this fun event, so as usual the “new kids on the block” were asked to write an article for Slipstream.

Florida Parade Concours by Ed Mayo

T

There were several Mavericks involved in the concours. Besides Keith and I as entrants, Jerry Sutton, Alan Bambina and I were judges. Mark and Lisa Steele, Fran Ussery and Jan were timers for judging teams. Erin Ussery worked as a runner taking scoring sheets to the scoring area. Also working were John and Dee Lersch helping direct car placements.

Sunday morning I elected to go on the 10 mile tour that awards you extra points towards your concours score. It was spitting rain when we left so only four cars showed up for the tour. By the time we got back it was a full fledged down pour. So much for the cleaning I had already done. However, my day was great compared to the 356 Speedster in front of me whose engine literally exploded, sending a connecting rod through the case.

...I wonder where the SUN in Suncoast came from... As I said earlier, for some reason the rain finally stopped Sunday afternoon and from then until dark Keith Olcha and I (the only Mavericks in the concours) and other car cleaning nuts worked to finish our cars for Monday’s show.

Erin turned 15 while at Parade so she’ll be 16 in a year (how’s the math so far?). Watch for young

However before the concours could happen there had to be some slight of hand on the part of the Parade and Resort staff. After several days of rain prior to Parade week it was obvious the planned golf course site would be a quagmire so the resort manager coerced all the residents of one of the condo complexes to park their cars elsewhere so their parking areas could be used for the concours. Just another example of no matter how much you plan . . .

Yes, it did rain on the concours, but thankfully it waited until mid-afternoon by which time most of the judging was over. Now there are a lot of concours cars that can no longer state in their For Sale ads, “Never been in the rain”. Just ask if they were at the Florida Parade! I was very fortunate to win my class with my ’72 911S and Keith Olcha did well placing 3rd. I don’t think the judges looked too hard for dirt on my car after

he host region for this year’s Parade was the Suncoast Region, however after having been there slightly over a week I wonder where the SUN in Suncoast came from? All it did was Rain. Saturday morning I unloaded my car, ran it through tech and then proceeded to erect my shade canopy, under which I would continue cleaning for the Concours. That was an overly optimistic plan. Shortly after midday Saturday it started to rain and it pretty much rained continually until about 4pm Sunday afternoon. Luckily I was able to do some work on the car in the trailer but only on the front and rear.

Yes, the judges WILL find that little spec of dirt that you missed 13

he June Park Place DE at Motor Sports Ranch was blessed with gorgeous weather and a lighter than usual turnout, largely due to the number of Mavericks headed for Parade. Both participants and officials fell into the light turnout category. While Jan Mayo was sorely missed as Grid Empress, Jean Frick has certainly earned the title of member of the Empress' court. She did a great job! We also had several of the primary instructor corps absent, but that was not a problem thanks to the very long term planning and work of DE Chairman John Sandusky and Bryan Henderson. They have been building a strong reserve of very capable instructors waiting in the wings for their chance to share their experience with folks early in their track-time careers. Obviously Bryan and John's efforts paid off.

great looking (Park Place designer) drinking water for all to use to keep hydrated. We needed it. Although the temperatures were not astronomical, the humidity was and I think we just about drank the ocean dry. Park Place also provided the entire Corner Worker contingent with really nice Porsche boutique white hats, which came in very handy, since there was little cloud cover and

The most notable thing about the entire weekend was that Joel Nannis at Black Flag had a very quiet and sedate couple of days. I think I may have seen Joel dozing off in a chair once or twice. There were fewer incidents of naughty behavior logged (yes we keep records) over the course of the weekend than I can ever remember. And Ray Luedecke must be doing a great job at DE Tech, because all of the on course towing trips were due to very bizarre mechanical issues with obscure roots.

Ben Witry setting up for a corner. shade was at a premium. The workers also had a real treat at the end of each day as those that wanted to got to ride a few laps with an instructor. They really appreciated that.

Although I was very pleased to check-ride several students (all successful, and always a pleasure I might add) for promotions, the high point of my weekend was the time I spent riding with Myron Krupp in his pristine white Peter Greg Turbo and then in his awesome Red 935. Then driving the 935 for a few laps was the topping on the weekend.

For those of us on the DE committee, we were very busy filling in for our absent peers, but the event went reasonably smooth, and I am not sure any of the other participants realized we were juggling. I know that I did not have any trouble falling asleep Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night.

Florida Parade DE at Sebring By Mark Steele

A

trip to Florida would not be complete without driving the famous 3.7 mile track at Sebring. When Lisa and I arrived in Sebring on Tuesday night, we were in awe of the enormous track and immediately checked in to the Chateau Elan Hotel which happened to be situated right on the hairpin of the track (turn seven). Just imagine waking up bright and early in the morning and seeing these wonderful twists and turns that you know you will be attempting to drive through shortly. With this view of the track we also quickly realized that if you did not break correctly for the hairpin, there was a nice escape route to a tire barrier.

I made sure I was out on the track for the entire 30 minutes for all three of my run sets because I knew this could be a once in a lifetime experience and I wanted to absorb every moment of it. What a Fabulous day on an exhilarating track!

The day started with some bright sun and cool temperatures just right for a great day of driving. Because many of us had never driven this track, we had twenty minutes of playing follow-the-leader with experienced drivers of the course leading the way. Being such a long track, it was difficult to remember all of the corners and by my second run set I discovered that there were about 17 different ways to take turn seventeen. As I became more comfortable with this track and the long straight in the back, I decided to push a little harder and reached about 140 mph

Florida Parade Rally by Bob Knight

L

inda and I are avid once-a-year rallyists. We were fortunate to finish in fourth place at the 2003 Tampa Parade. We have pulled off a similar feat at another Parade, but have yet to score the big one. Since Linda cannot operate a manual transmission, I am the driver and she is the nagivator… I mean navigator.

Parade rallies typically are run on Tuesday of Parade Week. On Monday, recent Parades have hosted a Beginners Rally School and an Advanced Rally School. Linda and I try to attend both. The schools offer the entrants a chance to brush up on rally terminologies and skills. The Boise Parade even offered a 45minute practice rally. The practice rally offered a glimpse of some traps and tricks that you may encounter on the course.

The Knight family got started rallying back in the 1980s. I say family because we used to strap our two daughters in the back seat of our 944 and give everybody a set of rally instructions. Some people may think that having the extra set of eyeballs might be an unfair advantage. Trying to referee at rally speeds three different opinions of what “turn right at the second opportunity” means is no picnic. Also, having a ten-year old, say, “I told you so” can be pretty humiliating.

At the Tampa Parade, Maverick Region’s Teri Davis was the Head Master of the rally schools. Teri also had a panelist of expert rallyist to offer their advice and tips. The best advice they give each year is to stay on course and finish, and don’t worry

...and Amy’s barf bag...

about your time. Experience being the best teacher, Linda and I typically fall for one or two of the tricks the rally master hides in the route instructions. Over time, we notice tricks that have bitten us before, and we successfully navigate the correct course. We try to not to get too stress-out by our mistakes and carry on. As Teri Davis reminded us, we are only racing for a trophy that costs $20, and it is not worth ticking off your rally partner or damaging your vehicle. Regardless of how we did, Linda and I know that if we make it to the end of the rally we can drown our sorrows at the ice cream social. Two, three or four scoops of ice cream with sprinkles tend to smooth things out. We swap stories and scores

“Standing room only” at Teri Davis’ Rally School

The Rally Box contains the tools that we can use while running in the unequipped class. We have different colored highlighters, Post-it notes, adhesive tape, pens and pencils, and Amy’s barf bag. Amy’s barf bag, unused thankfully, is one of those paper bags you see in the seat pocket in front of you while flying commercial aircraft. The episode that necessitated having the bag in first place has faded from memory, but it stays with us, just in case. The most important tool in the Rally Box is the stopwatch. Ours is a cheapo model, but amazingly keeps fairly accurate time year to year. I am amazed that the battery last so many years. At Parade registration, each rally team selects an “out-time” which is the official start time for that team. On the day of the rally, you show up 20 minutes before your start time. At the start of each rally, you need to reset the stopwatch to the Universal Coordinated Time broadcasted by shortwave radio over WWV in Fort Collins, CO. You do not want to be 2 – 3 minutes late or early leaving the start line. Our watch is usually less than a minute off. Never throw away the instructions that come with the stopwatch when you purchase it. Stopwatch button functions, that seem intuitive when playing with your new purchase in the store, are forgotten at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot at the start of a rally. 20

While packing for the trip to Parade, we always toss in the car the “Rally Box” and the “Rally Clipboard”. The Rally Box is a twenty-five year old cigar box. It sets on the closet shelf the remainder of the year waiting patiently.

Carey Spreen gets ready for the Rally with other Maverick rally teams such as the Breithaupts and Suttons. It seems like each team has their own version of the rally course, based on where they feel for the various tricks and traps. This year we convinced Ted Morgan of Comfort, Texas to team up with Aubrey Sutton. Ted was talking about how they managed to see West Palm Beach on the rally route. Talk about being off course! Nevertheless, they made it back to the ice cream. So, Same Time, Next Year, Linda and I will be out touring the countryside around Fort Worth at the 49th Porsche Parade, hosted by Maverick Region. I encourage everyone to come out and have fun on the rally.

James and Jasmine get “crafty” With next year’s Parade right around the corner here in our very own Fort Worth, I have already had lots of suggestions for some exciting activities from both adults and children. Of course we will have to put a little “Texas twist” on it all so that everyone will have a darn tootin’ good time and remember us Texans have to do everyJasmine and Geneva thing bigger and better! show off their trophies

Parade for Kids would not be complete without the wonderful Kids Autocross sponsored by Michelin and put together by our very own Lanean Hughes. A very determined girl actually maneuvered the entire course on her hands doing cartwheels. WOW!

he Florida Parade was not only full of fun for the adults, but the kids stayed very busy and were involved with many activities. Janet Ledesma (chairman of kids activities) did an outstanding job of organizing activities such as making various crafts, swimming in the super pool, a trip to Malibu, and an overnight stay at the Tampa Aquarium. She also managed to have pizza and a movie for the kids who did not attend the banquets.

The “kids” contingent surprised everyone with a group song

or anyone used to the Houston summer climate, the Parade Driving Event at the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport would have made them feel right at home. For those of us used to more temperate climates, though, the humidity was brutal. The grid opened each morning at 7 am with timed runs starting for the first run group at 8 am, all in an attempt to be finished by the hottest part of the day. For the most part, this was a successful plan, with timed runs ending by early afternoon each day.

followed by a sweeping left turn that headed you back toward civilization. Following this turn was a succession of box turns and chicanes that alternated from one side of the taxiway to the other, forcing you to look out of the corner of your eye to find the next gate. The final left turn toward the finish was pretty tight, not really allowing any "banzai" runs across the finish line. Penalties were as follows: hitting a cone cost 1 second; hitting a runway marker light cost $1500. Cones were the better bargain by far.

But that wasn't the end of the day. Since Michelin was the official sponsor of the Driving Event, they were able to talk the event organizers into allowing them to use the same course for their "Michelin Test Drive," wherein you could pay $10 to have Michelin install pre-mounted wheel/tire combos on your car and

The first classes to run on Wednesday morning were the newly-christened Showroom Stock (SS) classes, in which NO modifications are allowed. Various classes in this category were for the Boxster, Boxster S, 993, 996, and 993/996 Turbos. Yes, there is an SS class for the Cayenne, too--they (or should we say "it") ran on Friday. The best run from any SS-category car was made by Parade Competition Rules (PCR) Committee Chairman Mike Lommatzsch of Loma Prieta Region in a '00 Boxster, with a time of 63.193 seconds, winning class SS1M.

take a few test laps to see how they compared to your tires. And as if that wasn't enough, Porsche Cars North America sponsored the Porsche Driving Experience on Friday featuring two or three Cayennes (one Turbo, the rest S models). There was a long waiting list for this one, and runs continued until 4 pm on Friday. As for the course itself, Parade Driving Event Chair Dan Shields and his crew laid out a fairly long (more than one minute per lap for most drivers) course on two (mostly inactive) taxiways. As you started out, you made a left turn, tripped the start timer, and immediately made an acute right turn, staying in first gear. There followed an immediate increasing-radius left turn, where you shifted into second on the way to what looked like a random assortment of cones. However, once you got to where the cones were, you could see that it was a succession of gates leading you to the slalom. The distance from one cone to the next increased by a couple of feet with each interval, so you could gradually accelerate through the slalom, only to have to make it through an offset gate at the end, Jan Mayo charges through the pylons 22

Autocrossers patiently waiting their turn There was a lone Maverick in the Showroom Stock category: Bob Knight, in his '00 Boxster S, won SS2M with a time of 65.152 seconds. Bob is also the head of the PCA National Finance Committee, and Treasurer for the Ft. Worth Porsche Parade in 2004. Bob is obviously a multi-talented individual, since he and wife Linda also took 4th place in the Unequipped class in the Parade Rally. Congratulations on both trophies, Bob! Also turning the fastest Ladies' Showroom Stock time of 66.807 in a 996 (class SS4L) was Jutta Aldenhoff, who is the worldwide Porsche Club Liaison for Porsche AG. After SS came the Production classes, which allow limited modifications to tires, wheels, and suspension. Fastest time in the Production category was in a '99 996 (class P18M) driven by Richard Cowell of Gold Coast Region, with a time of 59.481 seconds. Fastest lady in the Production category was a 62.588-second run by Erinn Sommmer of Gold Coast Region, driving the same '99

Note that Jan and Ed Mayo won their classes in a car that, three days earlier, had won its class (Restoration-Touring-R2) in the Concours d'Elegance. Likewise, Keith Olcha's Boxster had taken 3rd in Preparation-Full-C1 in the Concours. No trailer queens here! On Friday the Improved and Modified categories ran. Improved category is for cars that have too many modifications to run in Production, but have no significant engine improvements, which would bump them into Modified. The Modified cars generally have larger-than-stock engines, as well as other significant changes (wider wheels and tires, after-market brakes, major body modifications, etc.).

Finally, another lone Maverick ran his '70 914-6 in Modified category: Robert Huffman turned a very quick time of 57.629 to take 3rd place in class M4M. This is the class that contained the overall top time of day winner, namely National VP Tom Provasi (Loma Prieta Region) in his '70 914-6, with a time of 55.008. Tom's time is even more impressive when you take into account the fact that his 3.5-liter engine was only running on 5 cylinders, making it more of a 2.9-liter. Fastest overall time for the ladies was Barbara Beecher of Gold Coast Region, driving a 944 Turbo in class M5L with a time of 59.803.

Fastest time in the Improved category came from Carey Spreen (rumored to be of Maverick Region) driving a Fran Ussery collects her timeslip '70 914-6 in class after completing a lap I2M with a time of 59.947. Fastest ladies' time in Improved came from Maverick Region Secretary Mimi Spreen, driving the same 914-6, with a time of 71.563, spanking the rest of class I2L (sorry, I only imagined the spanking part--Carey).

Many Mavericks walked away with Autocross trophies

And what of the inaugural running of the Cayenne in a Parade autocross? Have you been on pins and needles waiting for us to get to those results? Well, your patience has finally been rewarded. (Drum roll please.) Joe Boucher of Santa Barbara Region ran away with class SS7M in his '04 Cayenne S with a time of 78.355. Actually, he did run away with the class, since he was the sole entry. Teri and Charlie appear to be having fun In all, Maverick Region represented itself quite admirably, with eight first place trophies, four second place finishes, and three thirds. You can view the full results on the Parade 2003 website: http://www.pca.org/parade/2003/ 23

Getting Ready for Parade 2004 by Jan Mayo

I

n preparation for hosting Parade 2004, Wendy and I thought it would be a good idea to help Florida’s registrars Carole and Dick Kjellsen do some pre-parade Registration set up. We headed towards Florida to arrive mid-afternoon Thursday and hooked up with Carole and Dick. There are only a few things that we can be creative with on the Registration layout as the traffic flow has been working beautifully for many years. Wendy already has some ideas. It was great fun working with the Florida people and their excitement was building Friday morning as we set up for “their” registration prior to opening the doors for the early arrivals at noon. As soon as the doors opened we hit the road running. Wendy attached herself to Carole and became invaluable working the rest of the weekend as “Name Tag Chair”. Wendy has added that job to her list of Private Army staff as well as Goodie Bag Chair.

Most of my week was observing the home staff doing their jobs trying to see what we can do similarly and what we’ll need to do differently. A downtown city location will be very different than the private resort.

I attended the Spouse’s brunch at the invitation of Eleanor Bobbitt and also the Sponsor Reception. Both were great fun and a bit of an eye-opener. Mercy, there is more to this job than I thought (not the first time I’ve had that thought). The Goodie Store had a bit of a glitch with only one cash register working on the opening day. They got that fixed and the rest of the week was smooth (Jan, make a note: test cash registers BEFORE we open the doors).

...Whew, got that one down and now only 12 months to go till... Their Kids Program was great fun for the kids and the parents. Lisa was taking notes all week and is preparing a similar program. One of the more talked about events was the floating movie evening. They showed a movie at the pool where you could lounge in your inner tube and watch. Most of the rave reviews I heard came from the adults! The week was finally winding down and my head was spinning with ideas and thoughts. Then it was the final banquet and . . . OhMy-Gosh I have to give my “Welcome to Fort Worth – Y’All Come” speech. Well, no time to get nervous now, so get up and pretend you’re Nike, “Just Do It”. Whew, got that one down and now only 12 months to go till . . . . ONLY 12 MONTHS? Oh-My-Gosh!
