Drifting Mike Brodigan, President

O

k, the changes in my life over the next several months are going to take a bit of getting used to. I am really going to miss hearing “Hail to the Chief ” whenever I walk into a room. I have grown quite fond of some of my secret service agents (especially the one with the long hair and Bambi eyelashes [just kidding, Judy]). The political junkets were fun too, and the pay was quite generous. I do think Judy is getting kind of sick of referring to me as “Mr. President.” Lately she has been adding some pretty disturbing adjectives. After December, I will become just another John Q. Maverick. All good things must come to an end. I consider it a privilege to have served as the Region’s President for the last two years. The Region just keeps getting stronger and stronger because of the awesome people who put their time and effort into making this a fun organization. Another exciting thing about this club is the number of new faces we are seeing. Almost all of our leadership positions have changed in the last 2 years. New people spark new ideas. Slipstream, under Richard Bradley’s guidance continues to get better and better. Take a look at a 2008 issue, and compare it to today. Wow! Bigger, new features, great event ads, and COLOR! It takes a whole team of volunteers to keep this award winning newsletter going. We did some marvelous things with the Hope House, our Social Events, Sunday Drives and Happy Hours as well. Our driving events remain “second to none!” I want to thank everyone who made this an easy job for me. There are so many who have done so much in all our activities. With the new slate of officers I believe we will keep getting even better. Hey everyone, thanks for all you do, and I will see ya’ll next year.

Mav of the Month Please congratulate James Shoffit. Our latest Mav of the Month. James is everywhere. Driving events, lunches, socials, and at many of our board meetings. James also is a tremendous help to us in his role as Zone 5 Representative.

For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving James dinner for two at their award winning steak house. James, thanks for all you do. Mike

can’t forget the excitement I was feeling when we finished up last month’s Board Meeting. We had tons of attendees, lots of new faces and lots of enthusiasm around the table. If you ever want to be a part of something fun, as well as encouraging that involves an automobile that Dr. F. Porsche designed, this is it! Come be a part of your club by joining our core group at the Board meetings. You will find somewhere to plug in, and if you don’t, we can find something for you to do. As I finish off my 24th issue, I can still remember when Jan passed the baton to me as I thought to myself, “I don’t know what to do!” Now Jan’s in Colorado bracing for a cold winter and I’m still havin’ fun. This club is full of wonderful people that will become wonderful friends if you plug in. So I encourage every one of you to take a step of faith and become more than you are by yourself. Thank you to every one that has given me the encouragement I needed at the time I needed it, to do something I can for the ones that can’t. Here’s to a wonderful Holiday season...

Maverick Minutes Lisa Steele, Secretary

A

s the Thanksgiving Holiday approaches, this Secretary is very thankful that our Board Meetings are starting and finishing in such a timely manner. We began the November meeting promptly at 7:00 PM. Bryan Bell was running this meeting and he was eager to “get it started.” Bryan assured the group that all insurance is covered. He also had information from Andy Mears about Slipstream. Apparently, the mail service agency has raised their prices from our current price of $150/month to $500/month. Andy did some research and found another company that will do the job for $280/month. Jim Falgout reports with a smile on his face that “we have money.” Well…until that hospitality chick buys the pizza and beer for the next DE. Pat Friend introduced his friend, Paul Jason, to the group. Paul was just sitting in on this meeting, but it won’t be long until we convince him that he needs to volunteer for something. Pat was also happy to announce that he delivered his first order of 30 name tags to Chris Christensen for his Happy Hour folks. Can I hear a Woot Woot? Keep those

orders coming in! Pat reported that as of November 15th the on-line Goodie Store may have a slightly different look to it the next time you go on there to order something because there has been a change in management. It should still offer everything Porsche that your heart desires. Richard Bradley introduced his friends, Larry and Donnetta Ramsey. Donnetta has agreed to help with Slipstream Ads so Richard and Christy Payne (who currently does all of the ads) can have a little relief. Both Richard and Christy are doing the Happy Dance! Can’t wait to see your awesome work, Donnetta! Michael Pelletier would like for Donnetta to make a special ad for him that says “WANTED: Registrar for AX/TT.” If anyone is interested in this job, please contact Michael. Christy Payne reminded the group to sign up for the AX/ TT End of Season Celebration and Awards Dinner. She also announced that registration for Founder’s Day will be up on the website soon. Did we mention that it is at the Gaylord Texan?!! Anyone who is anyone, will be there so sign up early!! I have it from an inside source that the dress code is a nice dress shirt and jeans for the gentlemen and a beautiful blouse or your best Christmas sweater with a pair of jeans for the ladies. I already have my outfit picked out…do you? Robyn Howard was present, but had nothing to report. Travis Howard had a tear or two running down his face as he announced that the AX/TT season is over. Travis was excited to report that he tried a new TT course at the last event and there were mixed reviews…keep those new ideas coming! He also announced that the Mineral Wells dates for next year are all set. Tannia Dobbins is working on the AX dates. Wendy Shoffit was present, but had nothing to report. Carey Spreen attended several SCCA Rallies this year and he made the comment that “they make you stop and think too much.” Madhu Rao was present, but had nothing to report but he is anxiously awaiting the January Board Meeting when he gets to put his awesome secretarial skills to work. I personally cannot wait to read your Maverick Minutes, Madhu! Clint Blackman announced that the next Sunday Drive is a Turkey Chase in East Texas. Clint also announced that he will be stepping down as the Sunday Drive Chair. It will be hard to fill your shoes Clint…Thank you for all that you have brought to the ever growing Sunday Drive Group! Clint introduced John Harvey as the new Sunday Drive Chairman. Welcome, John!! Ed Mullenix announced that there will be a Tech Session at Autobahn on January 15th.

8

Jack Griffin is planning a Concours/Prep for the near future…stay tuned for specific dates! John Hamilton reported that the October DE sold out! Can I get another Woot Woot? He also announced that the November DE is looking good. Of course it is John because we have absolutely the BEST Instructors, Corner Workers, and Staff at our DE’s. Come join our FUN!! Meeting adjourned at 7:23pm…yes, you heard me right.. the meeting lasted a total of 23 minutes! Now that calls for a triple Woot Woot!!!

Save the flash!

Owning a Porsche is a unique experience. Do your part to preserve the experience... keep the flash alive!

The Foundation of HOPE By Linda Bambina

T

hey say a picture is worth a thousand words; this time it also speaks of at least a thousand hours. Maverick Region began a massive project for their beloved charity, The HuffakerHughes Hope House. The basic idea was to turn a small, drainage challenged backyard into a beautiful, playgroundsafe place for children to have fun, and a place where their mothers can be at ease and take care of healing themselves while building a new life free from domestic violence. Making that happen took a little over seven months with both volunteer and professional service. At a celebration party in June, coleaders Linda Bambina and Clara Lewis were surprised with an engraved boulder that

said it all: “The foundation for HOPE is built one rock at a time.” Of course, getting that 350 lb. baby out to the newly landscaped flowerbeds took another four months to complete! But............ COMPLETE it is!

PCA Palooza 2010 By Chris Christensen

T

his was the sixth year for PCA Palooza. It is a gathering of Porsche enthusiasts sponsored by PCA that includes: an arrival mixer, spirited and scenic drives, a Concours, a Saturday night dinner, and an Autocross on Sunday. It is over a weekend that gives those that work a chance to partake in the activities and the splendor of Eureka Springs. It is truly a beautiful area of the country, the fall colors were waning but enough left to even surprise a New Englander. We left at 8:00 AM sharp on Friday morning from the Sanger area where we met three other cars to join in a Caravan. The drive was a bit wet along I-40 as we hit numerous rain showers along the way. But as we got closer to Eureka Springs the weather started to clear a bit. The drive was very scenic if not spectacular in spots…passing through the Boston Mountains was a highlight. Beautiful countryside and autumn colors in the trees made the drive very worthwhile. We logged over 400 miles from Southlake to Sanger and on to Eureka Springs. Checking in to the hotel and then into the PCA Palooza event was painless. The folks running Palooza have it figured out… we felt very welcome. Everyone was smiling…guess it had to do with the fact in part that they had just gotten out of their Porsches. I am learning that driving Porsches or just looking at them can make everyone really happy. We counted about 13 Mavericks in attendance. Not a bad crowd considering the distance to get there. There were probably about 200 Porsches in attendance. I might add that there were some spectacular cars that made the trip –including a handful of beautiful 356’s and one bright yellow Carrera GT and everything in between. Friday evening we were treated to a buffet mixer hosted by the Palooza folks. The food was plentiful with more than enough to feed a small army. There were a few purchases that could be made, such as tee shirts, golf shirts, and other Porsche accessories. We did make a small purchase and then restrained ourselves. After a good night’s rest, we had breakfast in town at a very quaint restaurant. For those of you who have never been to 10

Photos by Chris Christensen Eureka Springs it is a very scenic town and of course a bit touristy. The streets are very narrow and in spots quite hilly. It makes for some interesting driving, especially when meeting an oversize vehicle head-on. Our group had signed up for the scenic tour on Saturday morning. It was not a long tour but again very scenic and interesting. From a one-way wood covered bridge to an almost all glass nondenominational church located in a very remote section – in a heavily wooded area. You can see from the photograph, it really was a beautiful location and the church was very cleverly constructed. We heard the folks that took the spirited tour really enjoyed themselves, if you know what we mean. Late morning we went on our own little tour of the town. Visiting some old hotels and the like, returning to wash the grime off of our cars for the Public Choice Concours. Hot water in an ice bucket and a towel…works wonders but not quite the best. It was a bit chilly – in the high 30’s in the morning. We lined our cars up in the People’s Choice Concours. So after about three hours the Concours was complete – with hopes of winning at least something. We retired to our rooms to get ready for dinner and the Concours awards…we didn’t win. Matter of fact no Maverick won. Jack Griffin had a spectacular ’85 Carrera in the show along with Frank Briggs and Doug Koeppen with their 993’s and Mike with his very nice and clean 928. We were all a little disappointed but not shocked. In addition this writer discovered that even a 2010 C2 Cab is not good enough to bring home the bacon. Such is the life in a Concours…there were great cars to compete against, so we shouldn’t grumble too much and just be happy we were there to enjoy it all. Dinner and drinks and a keynote presentation from Vic Elford – Born in London, Elford was one of the fastest drivers in the sixties and seventies….he was well known in the Porsche circuits at the time and known as quick Vic. His stories were entertaining and informative. Sunday brought out the Autocross…with James and Wendy Shofit assisting. It was a relatively short course, cars had difficulty reducing speed…probably 20 mph could be reached at maximum. We watched for a while but had plans to return home through Hot Springs, so we did not stay for the conclusion… All in all it was a fun trip with good friends and a beautiful setting. We are looking forward to next year and highly recommend a trip through the Ozark twisty roads to Eureka Springs…your Porsche will love it.

From the Bunker… By Howard Kimbrough

G

reetings fellow Maverick Region members. The 2010 Maverick Region track season has concluded with six high performance Driver Education events and a thrilling Club Race. Not that long ago in North Texas, if you wanted to track your car it meant a trip to College Station or the Tulsa area of Oklahoma. Fortunately, a few people with parcels of land and a vision have grown the ribbons of asphalt in our area, from one point seven miles of track surface to over seven miles at the three nearby venues. What has not grown significantly are the numbers of workers needed to perform the duties required at each of the corner stations. More specifically, there has not been an increase of younger people (18 to 25 year olds) to the ranks of the sport.

For the last half century, it has been the Sports Car Club of America that has trained and developed the majority of ontrack officials for use at SCCA club races, and many of the professional road race events held around the country. PCA relies on the practices and procedures of SCCA workers at it’-s on-track events too. There is always room for people who are eager, and willing to learn the methods of track flagging & communication. People who have the ability to concentrate on the task at hand, who have the heart of a first responder, and people who want to see the PCA track experience from a completely different perspective are encouraged to join. Feel free to contact me, Howard Kimbrough (404qcd@ sbcglobal.net or Bob Benson (detech@mavpca.org ) if you’d like to join the fun at the next PCA track event.

Race of Champions By Porsche North America

S

tuttgart/Atlanta on November 16 -- The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is the most-produced race car in history. To date, over 2,000 vehicles have been delivered to customers around the world. And now, the 450 hp GT racer from Weissach belongs to the official competition cars at the Race of Champions, where a number of the world’s most talented and famous racing celebrities from the most diverse disciplines come together in Dusseldorf, Germany on November 27 and 28. Joining the ranks of the world class starter field is Porsche pilot Jeroen Bleekemolen. The 29-year-old driver from the Netherlands won the GTC class of the American Le Mans Series with Tim Pappas this season at the wheel of a 911 GT3 Cup and knows the car from many years

of racing. In 2008 and 2009 he won the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, the fastest international brand trophy series. In 2008 he earned a victory in the LMP2 class at the Le Mans 24 Hours with a Porsche RS Spyder. In Dusseldorf, Bleekemolen will be up against the likes of Formula 1 pilots Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel as well as World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb and World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx. “I’m proud to be part of the Race of Champions for the first time,” says Bleekemolen. “Obviously, I’m hoping to contest as many heats as possible with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup - not one of the participating drivers knows the car like I do.” continued on page 12

December 11

Race of Champions continued The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, based on the road-legal 911 GT3 RS sports car, is powered by a 3.8-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine delivering 450 hp. The spectacular-sounding race exhaust system features a fully controlled catalytic converter. The rear-engine concept and the wide track give the racing 911 excellent traction and razor-sharp handling. Pilots operate the sequential six-speed gearbox manually. Power from the high-revving engine (max. 8,500 rpm) is distributed to the wide rear wheels via a mechanical differential. “I’m very pleased that the racing elite from all over the globe will be seen driving the world’s most produced race car, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup,” says Hartmut Kristen, head of Motorsport at Porsche. “I’m sure that fans and drivers alike will have just as much pleasure in the spectacular sound and the superb handling of this vehicle.” This marks the return of the Race of Champions to Germany since its first meet here in 1989. The event will be broadcast by the German national TV, ZDF. “Aktuelle Sportstudio” provides coverage on Saturday, with “Sportreportage” broadcasting the spectacular action from Dusseldorf’s Esprit Arena on Sunday. Get more information and follow the action on the event’s official site www. raceofchampions.com.

Fall Season DE Complete By Carrie Carrera

T

here were two remaining fall Driver Education events for 2010. What? You didn’t hear about the one in October? Well, that is because all of the fast loud guys were up at the Club Race in Hallett. So we didn’t have quite the roar of horsepower that is typical at one of our events. Nonetheless, there was an abundance of horsepower with several GT3s, GT2s, Carreras and a flock of Caymans and Boxsters. We ran the Motorsport Ranch 1.7 configuration going clockwise, for a change of pace. With a balance of cars in each group we had a fun full event. Our remaining instructor team was joined by several of our reserves and guests from other clubs so that we were able to provide instruction to all. Parade laps at lunch was very well attended, with donations going to the Komen Race for a Cure, in support of instructor Lori Mauthe’s Team Walking On, which is participating in the 3-Day 60 mile walk in San Diego in November. Our season finale was at Eagles Canyon Raceway in midNovember. With a full team of instructors, including the loud guys, we finished our year with another great event. The “regulars” were back – Joel Nannis at Black Flag, John Sandusky as chief driving instructor, Team Leads and Advanced Instructors with their Club Racing Porsches, and our new regular Travis as our Grid Marshall. Travis got his exercise running up and down the grid, around the new tech building, to manage the exit onto the track for each run group and did a fine masterful job in his 2nd event with us. We sure hope he is back next year. Lisa Steele and Andrea Bell discovered a new caterer from Cresson who provided our lunches at MSR, and the food was so wonderful, that they invited them back to ECR. They bring a whole new meaning to the concept of “track food” – wow was it tasty and enjoyed by all. Lisa and Andrea worked all weekend to keep of us well hydrated and fed with coffee and treats in the morning, cold drinks all day, and of course the fine lunch and pizza for dinner Saturday. The instructors GREATLY APPRECIATE their blue buckets of snacks at the grid stations. Due to the fine work of our instructors and excellent students, there were many promotions and solo stickers presented. We were a bit chilly in the wind, yet thankful that there wasn’t any rain all weekend. A special shout out to Bob Benson and his team of corner workers that kept us running smooth and safe all day. Without them we couldn’t begin to have this much fun. The spring schedule is published for 2011 starting in March at Eagles Canyon, and April at MSR, and then back at Eagles Canyon for Memorial Day. Watch for email alerts and check out Slipstream and the website for more details. Happy Holidays to all and big thank you for all who participated in the 2010 Driver Education Season.

PuShing The PerForMAnce enveLoPe.

I’ve been buying cars from Park Place Porsche for seven years, and have probably purchased eight cars from them. I have my baby now – a 2001 Turbo with custom wheels. When I purchase from Park Place, it’s always free of complications. If I’m looking for something specific, they’ll find it and take care of it for me. Because I’ve worked with them so many times, there’s a level of trust. I don’t worry about it. When you get treated that way, you keep coming back. Whenever I’ve brought my cars in for service, it’s always been a wonderful experience. The car is always ready before I’ve even thought about it, and it’s beautifully clean when it comes back. There’s just a level of perfection at Park Place that you won’t find elsewhere. I recently joined the Porsche Club of America, and what got me interested was a Park Place Porsche drive event. They’d been encouraging me to try it for years, and I finally made the time to do the caravan. It was a blast. They push the cars pretty quick and follow it with a steak dinner; it was first class. The PCA does cool weekend runs, so I plan to do more of that. I love this dealership – they’re friendly and personable, provide good service; no problems, just great cars. I recommend Park Place Porsche to anyone interested, and I’ll keep coming back.

Cliff’s Ramblings: Hallett Club Race By Cliff Blackshear

I

love the Hallett track. It is a driver’s track. I have not met a driver/racer that does not like this road course. Plus the atmosphere is awesome. Beautiful setting with rolling hills, wooded surroundings, and a wonderful family that built and runs it to this day. Food at the Finish Line Café is not bad at all, especially breakfast. I’ve been to that track many, many times. Started out going there to support a friend racing in the Hallett “COMMA”, (Competition Motorsport Association) series. He was racing an Alfa in the GT3 class in the 90’s. Took the GT3 championship in 1998. My friend gave me the plaque after it was presented to him that year. I have it on the wall in my room to this day. It was a special time for us. We grew up together and remain tight even today... He is responsible for my being a Porsche technician. His dad bought a 1957 356 new back in the day. Turned it over to his son when he was old enough to drive and grilled him with proper driving techniques. I was right there and drove that 356 many times, full on, tail hanging out steering crossed up, throttle pinned to the floor. So in the middle of October, I was off to Hallett, once again this time to witness a PCA club race, with the goal of helping anyone I could to overcome any difficulties with their machines. Gladwill went and paddocked up with six other competitors. They rented three nice rigs to stay in for the weekend in the paddock and had them set up as a compound and parked their cars right there. Nice set up for the drivers. Get some sleep, wake up, have some food and a little coffee (motion lotion I call it), step out the door and there is the race car. I stayed off track nearby and came in each day in stealth mode. Wanted to look in from the outside and observe. Then help when I could when someone was in need. Sent out an email on Maverick site letting folks know I would be there and help in any way I could if they had a problem that was inside my realm of knowledge. My expertise is really road going Porsches, so my ability to help is limited to mechanical issues. Track settings, handling problems, etc. are not things I have a lot of experience with. Come to me and tell me the car feels loose and I’m lost. So many variables. Tires

Photos by Cliff Blackshear (condition, heat cycles, pressures), sway bar settings, spring rates, shock settings, alignment, etc. all vary from track to track. Friday one of the guys in the compound, Mike Redenbaugh, had an off exiting turn 10 on an early lap. Slicks were still a little cold when he got on throttle at exit and the car came around. He ended up hitting the

tire wall with both front and rear of car. His GT4R 993 was not happy with the resulting Taking a well deserved nap! damage. I looked it over from the bottom and tried to push the body parts back out to make it drivable. Was not totally successful in my efforts. Fortunately Steve Watkins was there. His body shop expertise really paid off. He made the car right. The rest of Mike’s weekend went well. Saturday I got up and was kinda lazy. Hit the track a little after 8:30. Went to “Finish Line Café” and had some pancakes, bacon, milk and coffee. Felt good; morning air was crisp and cool, sky clear, good day I’m thinking. Drive over to compound, barely out of car and Gladwill says “Can you help Edwin? He had an off that resulted in some front damage to his car this morning and his Sp Box has a broken radiator!” Absolutely, I’m thinking and reply. So off I go up the hill to check it out. Brian Amond comes along and I see that he is most concerned for Edwin’s situation. Turns out Edwin had what started out with a simple off, then he encountered a small ditch that sent his car somewhere near 4 feet in the air. Nose comes down first and front of car is not pretty. Oh my! Most air management components under front of car are either destroyed or December 19

completely missing. Right radiator is broken and mountings are bent. So, while I am pulling off entire front nose and assessing damage, Brian takes some time to just look at the car from every angle. He comes up with many observations that were most helpful. Ultimately we got Edwin back out there. He missed qualifying and had to start from the back of the field. In sprint race three on Sunday he finished 8th in SPBOX class. Nice… That felt good… Some great racing went on that weekend. Spec Boxster class was amazing. John Gladwill and Steve Watkins dueled for 1st and 2nd all weekend. Michael Hsu and Bryan Henderson went after one another in the same class and some great driving was witnessed. Thomas Jones came into his own and showed some amazing skills. Billy Stevens wanted to get past Glen Gatlin all weekend, but Glen was having none of it. The HP of a GTA2 was just too much for a GTC4 car. Billy really drove well. Cup cars are awesome to watch. If you have not been to Hallett it is a wonderful venue. The turn out this year was huge. 90 plus cars and perfect weather. The SP Box class shows (and I have a time sheet in front of me for Sprint Race 1) 20 cars in the first sprint race. My understanding is that 22 cars signed up. That was the best class for my money. Great racing all up and down the pack. Also very clean racing in a class where the cars are so equal in so many ways. That is a driver’s venue for sure... Wow!

Happy Hour at Uncle Julio’s Chris Christensen, Happy Hour Chair

Photos by Chris Christensen

W

e had a very good turnout at this month’s Happy Hour with over thirty-five enthusiastic Mavericks joining in the fun. Two long tables increased to three long tables that normally seat about 15 or so at a table…. a good crowd and it seemed everyone enjoyed the food and camaraderie. We even had a couple drop in who now live in Germany, Alan and Verena Lage. About a month or so ago I spoke with Jack Griffin asking him if he would be interested in speaking at an upcoming Happy Hour about his racing history. Jack agreed, being the great guy that he is.

Jack Griffin, with one of his many Porsches...a 1985 Carrera, with original paint...it is gorgeous!

Many of the Mavericks came to hear Jack talk about his experiences at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Some of us knew Jack had driven in this race, not once, but twice with a third attempt that was foreshortened. Jack had also driven in the 12 Hours of Sebring, as well as others. This writer has always thought the Le Mans race is “une course extraordinaire.”

Derek Stutsman and his wife Susan enjoying a night out!

Anyone attempting it was certain to prove himself on earth (hopefully not heaven - at least not immediately) as a great racecar driver. 24

Jack’s talk was informative and fun to hear…along with mementos…and a tennis trophy?!! Wow, it was good he came home healthy and with some bragging rights. But in reality, anyone who has driven in the “24 hours of Le Mans” has bragging rights for a lifetime from our point of view. We thank you Jack for a great presentation and a job well done. It never ceases to amaze us how many Mavericks own more than one Porsche… what a testament to the marque!

And of course they were all lined up outside Uncle Julio’s, even impressing the young manager of the restaurant who had to go out and take a peek. It really doesn’t matter the year or model of the car you own, it is still a Porsche. We run into many people who will say ”you know I should never have sold that 356 that I owned many years ago.” And many of us still own their original Porsches, it is hard to let go of such a wonderful sports car!

Kimberly Rote and Wade Andres.

At this month’s HH, we will be ordering free nametags for all those who signed-up to receive one. We hope to have them completed by the November HH - or if we run late by December’s. If you missed out we will have additional forms available at next month’s HH. Next month Happy Hour will return to and close out the year at the Bavarian Grill on December 16th…a fun German cuisine with a beer garden atmosphere. See you all there.

Racing with PCA at Mineral Wells By Garrett Dexter

Photos by Charlie Davis

S

ince my brother Josh started racing with the Porsche Club back in March of 2010, he expressed to me that I needed to come out and race because, in his words, “that’s the most fun I’ve had in a car with my pants on.” So once he told me that after his first time out, I knew I needed to make it out for a race weekend. Garrett Dexter contemplates the We planned a short trip for the day ahead weekend of October 2nd and 3rd; I had no clue what I was getting myself into. We made it out to Mineral Wells airport early Saturday morning and all I saw was a large patch of asphalt, cones and race ready cars. I’ve got to admit I was really nervous when we pulled up and walked around, but the butterflies soon settled with the generous greetings from all the other participants and instructors. Josh and I hoped we would be getting into a Porsche, but found ourselves in his Nissan 350Z driving around the Time Trial course at 50% speed. In the car he pointed out the breaking points, apexes and speeds he was going to try to achieve throughout the day. I was a little unsure on how I was going to do, but I then drove the track at half speed with Jeff and he instructed me more on what I needed to do throughout the track and slowly everything fell into place when we picked up the speed. My first few laps with Jeff were far from smooth, but the guidance he gave me stuck in my mind, and by the time I rode with an instructor named Gabby everything fell into place. I then started running faster more smooth times and by the end of the day I was only 2 seconds off of my brother’s time. Not too bad for my first time racing. I told Josh that day that I had done things to a car I’ve never done before, it was great! It’s something else when you’re able to run a car to the edge of its breaking point and it still goes; I’ve got to give the Z credit there. OUCH!! I am not sure what was hurt worse ...

26

At the day’s end we stayed and picked up

the Time Trial course and then set up the Autocross course for Sunday, and thanks Tannia and Robyn for showing me how to drive a box truck like a race car!!! The Autocross day opened at sun rise with a nice cool breeze, and I was feeling pretty good about myself. We had to walk the course and determine our lines as if we were in the driver’s seat. I was in the first group with Josh and rode the course with him to find some more lines throughout the track. After each run we talked about different things we could do to make the next run faster, such as making this corner wider and turning into the gate between the box and turning into the witches’ corner.

It came time for my 6 runs and Michael jumped into the car to instruct me and his expression of gas, gas, gas, brake, brake, brake helped me figure out how to run through the

Racing with PCA ... (continued) course as fast as possible. And at one point around the big circle, I responded to his gas, gas, gas with too much gas and spun the car out in nothing less of excitement and adrenaline. I turned to Michael with a grin from ear to ear, because the safety was impeccable and I knew I couldn’t hurt or injure anything or anyone out there. After that spin out I knew the car and began Chuck McCoy ponders how he can to run faster more efficient get another second out of the course times. Tech Corner Ed Mullenix, Tech Chair

L

ast month’s topic was electrical system maintenance. I will expand on that subject briefly and then touch on the subject of storing your Porsche for an extended period.

I have seen several articles on the various threads about battery tenders (low current battery chargers) and cut-off switches. If you drive your Porsche every day or at least several times during the month, you probably don’t need to worry about it starting as long as the battery and charging system are in good condition (re: last month’s column). If you have a special car that only gets exercised occasionally and only during nice weather, you might consider one of the aforementioned items. A battery cut-off switch is a heavy-duty switch that you connect to your Porsche’s battery ground cable. It usually has a red plastic lever/key that turns the switch on and off and is removable should you choose to do so (great idea if you’re worried about your teenager sneaking the car out while you’re away, bad idea if stuff gets misplaced in your garage). With a battery switch turned off, the static current is no longer an issue. You also lose all of your radio preset stations or seat positions because the memory power is disconnected. If your battery is fully charged and you turn the battery switch off, you can come back in several weeks and turn it back on and the car should start. If you plan on not driving the car for several months, a battery tender would be a better choice. Even when fully charged and with no current drain (as in sitting on the shelf in a parts store) an automotive lead-acid battery will discharge after several months. A battery tender is connected to the battery as one would any battery charger. A tender only generates one to two amps of current so there is no worry about overcharging. If you choose the battery tender and leave the trunk lid open, remember to disconnect the trunk light and micro-switch on the trunk latch. You can employ both options and not have to bother with the trunk light, etc. The battery tender requires that you leave it connected to an extension cord plugged into a wall receptacle in your garage. I have seen several cars that had a tender installed, the trunk lid was closed, and the cord was not visible. The result was the tender was ripped out by the roots when the driver failed to disconnect same and drove away. In addition to the battery issue, if you are not going to 28

drive your Porsche for several months there are some other considerations as well. I had the opportunity several years ago to place my car in long term storage when I won an allexpense paid vacation to Iraq via the Navy! Here in Texas we usually do not have harsh winters with months of rain and snow. If your car is parked in a garage that protects it from rain and cold, you don’t absolutely have to top off the fuel tank. Moisture condensation inside a steel fuel tank will cause rust formation. The less steel exposed to moisture-laden air (as in full of fuel), the less possibility of rust formation. I would recommend that you have your oil changed shortly before you store your car. Any combustion engine produces all sorts of weird compounds that become acids in the presence of water. For you non-chemistry majors, the combustion of a gallon of gasoline will produce more than a gallon of water. Most of it goes out the exhaust but some finds its way past the rings into the engine oil where it combines to form acid (bearing-destroying) compounds. Fresh oil has sufficient corrosion inhibitors to prevent any corrosion for several months. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. If you’ve had the brake fluid changed within the past year, I would not be too concerned about it but I would get it changed when I returned the car to service. Next, tire pressure. The tires are not perfectly sealed to the wheels which is why we periodically have to correct our tire pressure. Increase the tire pressure to around 45 psi. before storage to account for the slight air loss. Lastly, rodent damage. I live next to a creek and from time to time, I see evidence of little visitors in my garage. I place trays of rat poison in my garage to give them something to eat besides the insulation on my car’s wiring. Not sure why, but there is something about the insulation on German wiring that is irresistible to rodents. I have dogs (four at last count) so I have to be careful where I place the poison. Because Maverick Region encompasses the entire metroplex, we will be having a tech session on the west side of DFW at Autobahn Porsche. The Tech Session at Autobahn Porsche will be on January 15th. Primary topic will be brake system maintenance. We will discuss how driving habits affect brake wear and have some training aids (worn brake components) to illuminate when and why servicing is required. Ed
