Shifting Gears: Your Club Wants You! By Jim Falgout, Region President

W

hew! I made it through my first board meeting as your President. It actually was quite easy. We have such enthusiastic and good leaders in so many areas, it is easy to run our board meeting. You should attend one and see for yourself. Three of our members, Cindy Bliss, Greg Dranow, and Victor Verrissimo, did just that. We always appreciate our members joining us – you often have good ideas and suggestions. We welcome all input. Best of all, we will pay for your meal on your first visit. We not only have committee reports; folks have questions or concerns, and someone comes up with an idea. The synergism is amazing. You will be seeing the results of some of these ideas coming to fruition in the coming months. Stay tuned. Usually, you think of motorsports activities not gearing up until March. Our club will have several activities for you to choose from in February, and we have something for everyone. For those of you who enjoy or are interested in participating in track events, we have a Drivers’ Education Event (DE) on the weekend of February 1415. I know, it is Valentine’s Day weekend, but you can have great fun at the track during the day and enjoy a romantic evening afterward. There is also our first Autocross event of the year on Sunday, February 22. For those of you who want to enjoy the “people” side of our club, we have lunch opportunities on February 10 and 26; just check the calendar for the locations. We also have our monthly social after-hours event on February 19 at a new location for us: the Hilton Garden Inn on George Bush Turnpike in Richardson, just east of Central Expressway. Speaking of the “people” side, I want to thank Paul and Veronica Ramos’ for the fine job they did in 2014 leading our after-hours events and am happy to announce that Stephanie Ho will be chairing that event for 2015. I encourage anyone who would like to help in that area to contact Stephanie at hh@mavpca.org. Hopefully, you attended our All Member Party on January 24 and found a club activity or activities that you can enjoy. If you would like to get involved in one of our activities, we can always use more help. As I stated last month, you will get more out of your efforts than you put in with our club. 2 February

ALEXIS A. V. CAMPBELL, Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 One of our visitors, Cindy Bliss, said at our board meeting in January, “If I had known my Porsche would come with so many friends, I would have bought it sooner.” YOUR CLUB WANTS YOU . . . to get involved. Come join the fun.

Mav of the Month While this is a monthly award, the awardee or awardees frequently have contributed to the success of our club over a long period of time. It is our way to recognize their contributions and say thank you. This month’s winner is a great example of a member who is enthusiastic and really cares about the success of the club and its events. He has a tremendous attitude. He led our drivers’ education events in the past. He has been the fearless leader of our club for four years. Under his leadership our club has blossomed. Every aspect of our activities has improved. He will not take the credit for any of it, and that is one of his great attributes. He has been extremely helpful in my transition to President. Our Mav of the Month is John Hamilton. Thanks, John, for all you have done and continue to do.

Carey On...

By Carey Spreen, Managing Editor Now that the holidays are well and truly over, Maverick Region events are gearing up for 2015. In February there is the first of our Drivers’ Education events at MotorSport Ranch over the weekend of February 14-15. DE Chair Chris Tabor has scheduled five DEs at MotorSport Ranch this year, and four of them will be on the 3.1-mile course. Two more DEs will take place at Eagles Canyon Raceway, and there will be a Yellow-and-White Run Group DE in conjuction with the three-region PCA Club Race at COTA in May, over the Mothers’ Day weekend, much to the chagrin of Club Race/DE Registrar (and mother) Wendy Shoffit! The first Autocross (of 10!) of the year is coming up on February 22 at Lone Star Park, in our new partnership with the Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club. You can read more about this series in the Q&A article with new Autocross Chair Wes Lincoln on page 20 of this issue. I for one am excited about it and look forward to competing in the first event. Looking ahead to March, the Sunday Drive series starts up again on March 22, headed by our new Sunday Drive

team of Tom Martin and Neill Flood. The first drive will be to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum at Addison Airport. Tom and Neill say that they are splitting up the Drives this year, so that some will be on Sunday and some will be on Saturday, in an attempt to accommodate those who can’t always attend on a Sunday. Tech Session Chair Ed Mullenix tells me that he will be putting on a Tech Session on Saturday morning, March 21, at his shop (Mullenix Motorsport) in Carrollton. The topic of the session will be a track event tech inspection of a Porsche, to show what is involved in those technical and safety inspections that are done on your car prior to a Drivers’ Education weekend. Ed will have a display of brake components as examples of what passes Tech and what doesn’t. Watch for the ad in the March issue, or RSVP to techcorner@mavpca.org. Speaking of technical stuff: our new Treasurer, Richard Solomon, has suggested publishing a series of doit-yourself articles in Slipstream, covering regular maintenance tasks, such as oil and filter changes. Watch for more on that as it develops. Read on!

Gimme a Minute: January Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

N

ew Region President Jim Falgout began the meeting promptly at 7:00 pm. He mentioned helping out by arranging for the February and April Monthly Dinner Social event locations. He will work with the Monthly Social Chair to get more advanced notice for the events. He also mentioned that The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson has a huge car show every year, and has expressed an interest in our joining them. VP Gareth Maurice has information for all the Drivers’ Education events for this year and will ensure we have insurance for them. He reported that, unfortunately, Pennington Field denied our request to rent the lot for the upcoming Tire Rack Teen Driving school. He will work with Equipe Rapide to see if they can help us find an alternate location. New Member Victor Verrissimo, who has been in PCA for going on a year, attended the meeting. He’s been to social events and beyond and wants to get more involved. Incoming Treasurer Richard Solomon is working with Jim Falgout to get everything transferred. We have money in the bank: ~$113K. Editor-in-Training Jim Hirsch believes his busy travel schedule has been trying Carey Spreen’s patience because he hasn’t helped as much as he intended. He will remedy that soon and looks forward to helping put out the magazine (does not feel the term “newsletter” is apropos).

6 February

Editor Carey Spreen has been happily working with Jim (not put out at all). They have been using “TeamViewer” software to actively collaborate on the current edition. Our mailing list continues to grow. New Autocross Chair Wes Lincoln reported that we discussed the future autocross options and will be partnering with Equipe Rapide to join their autocross program. He will evaluate it for this year. ER will host an AX school on Saturday, May 30. The Truxster, our driving event support vehicle, currently resides at Zims in Bedford. It needs some work done on it to make it more usable for other events this year. Co-Rally Chairs Don Sebert and Neill Flood are planning a spring rally in April. They will try to get something into Slipstream ASAP about it. Many details need to be worked out. Tech Chair Ed Mullenix hasn’t had an event in a while because of various reasons, but he is now working on something very soon. He tossed out several ideas like maintenance on air cooled cars or water cooled cars, how to tech inspect your own car, etc. More details to come later. DE Chair Chris Tabor wants him to give a small presentation about the importance of tech inspection to our DE attendees in February. Outgoing Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey suggested that we establish a budget for Tour chairs. There are gas and printing expenses that can add up. He wants them to remain free events to encourage new members to come out. We believe the club’s bank account can handle reimbursing for such expenses AND keep the

January 7, 2014 drives free of charge. A suggestion was made to have brochures to advertise the DE events to give to new Sunday drivers, perhaps with a discount coupon inside. Membership Chair Tom Froehlich reported that we have 1,493 primary members and 2,364 total (including affiliates). Membership is up a few from last month. Incoming Sunday Drive Co-Chairs Neill Flood and Tom Martin are working to transition from John Harvey and Brendan Eagan. They have a schedule prepared for the year and will send it to all the necessary people. New Member Greg Dranow has been in the club for about a year. He and his wife have enjoyed the social events, particularly the Grandpappy Point tour. Next he wants to DE and get involved in the club. Bruce McQuaid has been working with Gareth on the Tire Rack Teen Driving Event. New Member Cindy Bliss has been in the club about four months. Her first ever event was the lunch in Lewisville, and she had such a good time, she decided to do the DE in November. She has been actively recruiting others to join PCA. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit mentioned that we have an official date for the PCA Club Race at COTA in Austin. It will be May 8-10, 2015 (yes, Mother’s Day). More details later. DE Chair Chris Tabor reported that last year the DE program was very successful. He attributes it in no small part to the increase in hospitality. He has seven events planned for 2015:

five at MotorSport Ranch (all but one on the 3.1mile track) and two at Eagles Canyon Raceway. MSR’s track rental fee went up about 10%, but he thinks the DE budget can withstand the increase. Jim Falgout encouraged all board members to attend the January 24 All Member Party at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving. Last year it was a huge success, and hopes it will be again. Finally, he announced John Hamilton as the Mav of the Month for his tremendous contribution to the club as President for the last four years! The meeting was adjourned at 8:29 pm.

“ . . . it’s the people”: Slipstream Editors Old and New As Told to Linda Bambina, Region PR Chair Author’s Note: This monthly column moves from interesting garages to interesting people. Working with Carey Spreen on Slipstream for the last 3 years has been a delight, and I look forward to working with our new editor, Jim Hirsch, this coming year.

S

mall German cars have fascinated me ever since I rode in a neighbor’s BMW Isetta in about 1960. My first exposure to Porsche came when a family friend bought a 914 and let me sit in the driver’s seat and rev the engine (I wasn’t quite old enough to drive it yet). After that I knew I had to have one. My first car was a ‘74 VW Thing (Type 181), which I soon traded in on a ‘74 914 1.8 while in college. In 1979, just after graduating, I was seeking fame and fortune in sunny southern California when I spotted a notice for an upcoming autocross hosted by the San Deigo Region of PCA. I had actually entered an autocross (in the Thing) put on by the Texas A&M Sports Car Club while a student there, so I decided to go check this one out with my real sports car. I entered the event and had already taken my first run when one of the officials came up to me and asked if I was a PCA member. When I replied that I was not, I was informed that the event was for PCA members only. To avoid further controversy, I joined PCA right then and there, beginning what was to become a lifelong affiliation with the organization. Since that time, I have been a member of Hill Country Region (Austin), where I was newsletter editor in 1981 and 1982, later moving to Dallas and join8 February

ing Maverick Region in 1986. In 1989, the company for which I worked transferred me to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I was an active member of the Golden Gate Region, including being Autocross Chair in 1993. I moved to Portland, OR in late 1996 after the birth of my daughter Geneva, and was a member of the Oregon Region until mid-1998, when I returned to Maverick Region, and have been here ever since. Over the years, I have been an avid fan of any type of driving event that PCA offers, including rallying, autocrossing, time trials, Drivers’ Education, and maybe Club Racing some day. I have owned a succession of Porsches, including a ‘70 914-6 (which I often miss), a ‘73 911S (which I REALLY miss), and currently drive an ‘82 911SC. PCA folks are my kind of people; my life would be very different without them! – Carey Spreen =============================

M

y Porsche life is relatively recent and short. Growing up in a rural town in northwest Iowa did not bring many chances to see, let alone drive, what would be legitimately known as a sports car. Yes, there were Corvettes around, but really nothing British or German in the area. So, I purchased my first car 45 years ago when I was 15 – a 1958 Ford Fairlane 2-door post with a transplanted 312 Mercury engine. Before I turned 18, I had owned 7 cars, with the most recent one a 1965 Olds 4-4-2. Lots of muscle, but little “sport”. I actually began reading about sports cars about that time, as my brother, nine years older than me, and now living in a large metropoli-

tan area, began sharing his Sports Car Graphic magazine with me, and even took me to something called a “gymkhana” the next time I visited him. The wheels began turning in my mind, but it would be four more years before I pulled the trigger and purchased my first sports car – a 1966 MG Midget in British Racing Green. That was followed shortly by a 1968 Triumph TR250 and a 1973 MGB. Those were followed by four children and a long break from my hobby, although a series of Mustangs became my daily drivers. Fast forward to 2006 and with the kids beginning to get their own addresses, I went out and got back into the roadster game with a 2005 Honda S2000. That lasted long enough for me to realize I needed to seriously plan for retirement in a few years and went to a Mazdaspeed 3 as a daily driver. When retirement arrived in December 2013, I had done my research, test drives, and decided that it was time to get the best roadster available – the Porsche Boxster. My order went in on January 9, 2014 and my Boxster S arrived on April 17. I knew from my Mustang club experience how beneficial participating in a local club dedicated to your car can be, so I joined PCA, and the Maverick Region, as soon as I received my VIN – over a month before I picked up my Porsche. Now, it’s my turn to contribute to this group who welcomed a new owner with open arms. Slipstream is a wonderful publication and a great benefit for club members. I hope to continue the tradition of excellence as I assume the Editor duties from Carey. – Jim Hirsch

A Suspension Odyssey, Part 4: Bilsteins, Boges, and Konis, Oh My!

By Ash Seidl-Staley

N

ow I don’t want to inadvertently dredge up any bad Holiday memories, but if you can remember all the way back to the November issue of Slipstream, you would know that my current quest of upgrading my 914’s suspension all started with a collapsed shock. The twenty-somethingyear-old shock absorber insert gave out after my car transitioned from pavement to gravel within the expansive UTD parking lot. In all honesty, I am glad that it did, because the situation gave me the opportunity to go through and overhaul nearly all of the components of my front suspension. Previ-

ously we have already covered the tie rods and the ball joints, so this article will be all about the shocks. Before you can go ahead and begin the process of switching out the old shocks for shiny new ones, you must first determine which type of struts are currently on the front of your car. Determining this is an important step because certain shock inserts will only be compatible and fit into specific struts. Finding out what your car is equipped with can be as simple as just looking to see what color the strut is. Typically green struts are associated with the Bilstein brand, black struts are normally Boges, and red struts are usually Koni. An additional method for determining if your car is equipped with

914 with new shock insert installed. Bilsteins is to look at the bottom of the strut and see if there is a small

roll pin present. This pin will look like a circle with a groove cut into its side, and will be located just above the large pin or bolt used to connect the strut and the ball joint. Seeing that there wasn’t a roll pin at the bottom of my strut, and that my struts were black, I determined that my 914 (like most stock Porsches) was equipped with Boge struts. After a heated debate with myself about whether or not to upgrade and buy a complete Bilstein strut assembly, I decided to stick with the standard Boge inserts, which I found were readily available at various internet parts warehouses. Once you have figured out which strut you have and have purchased your replacement shock inserts, the fairly simple process of installing can begin. To remove your front shock absorber you must first jack the front of the car up off the ground and remove the wheels. As always make sure that the car is firmly stable on jack stands before beginning your work. Once the car is up, open up the hood and remove the large nut and washer located at the top of the shock tower. For those of you with Bilstein struts, you should first drive out the roll pin described above before removing the shock tower nut. With the nut and washer removed, reach in and compress the shock so it will come down out of its hole, and gently pull on it to allow it to clear the fender well.

Note: Be careful not to bend the metal brake lines or let the strut hang freely during this step, as you could damage your delicate brake system. Next, remove the dust shield on the top of the shock and inspect the rubber O-ring on the top of the insert, making sure it is not damaged or cracked. If it is in good working order, it can be reused on the new shock insert; if not it needs to be replaced. The actual act of replacing the inserts is quite simple. For some strut types you just have to pull out the old insert and slide the new one in, but for others you must first loosen the large nut holding the cartridge in place before it can be removed. With my Boges I was able to get a firm grip on the nut and loosen it with a pair of channel locks. An additional step for those with Bilsteins is that you must re-install the roll pin into the bottom of the strut. When you do this, make sure that the pin’s orientation is correct; the open slot of the roll pin must be facing away from the center of the strut. Another step for all shock replacements is to clean out any excess oil present in the strut housing before sliding in the new insert.

Shock tower nut tightened properly. Note: Some washers have their sides bent up to keep the nut from moving or loosening. If this is the case on your car, simply bend the metal back down to gain access to the nut. When the shock insert is firmly seated in the strut, replace the dust cap (I painted mine red while it was out, just for fun) and compress the shock while pushing it back into the fender well guiding it up to the hole in the shock tower. Re-install the washer and tighten the shock tower nut, and you’re done! Join me next month when I tackle my 914’s brake pads and rotors.

PCA Palooza 2015: Autumn in Eureka Springs By Tom Martin

A

utumn has always been a perennial favorite season of the year. It’s a completely understandable sentiment. After the birth of spring and the unbridled youth of summer, autumn represents the maturity of life before the dearth of winter and the rebirth of the phoenix in the spring. Porsche drivers especially like autumn. Before the arrival of the biting cold of winter; before the garage queens are put up on their hibernation thrones for the winter; before the daily drivers switch to winter tires; the cool brisk air of autumn lends itself to peak performance of their engines, which pierce the silence of the countryside with their on-song shriek.

Porsche event outside of the nationally sponsored Parade and Escape. While the Palooza is the cumulative effort of three PCA regions: White River, Ozark, and Cimarron, Leonard and Melody of White River Region are definitely the driving force behind the event. Over 60 Mavericks made the pilgrimage to Eureka Springs for the latest Palooza, held the first weekend of November. We caravanned up to Arkansas with Ben and Sue Connell, electing to take secondary roads most of the way in lieu of the stifling, monotonous highways. The final leg leading into Eureka Springs was a myriad of winding corners that had me grinning from ear to ear. At one point, we encountered a road sign with a 180° arrow. Yes, it was a hairpin, an honest to goodness, don’t brake ‘til you see God, second gear, punch it at the apex, hairpin. Great stuff. The Palooza kicked off bright and early Friday morning with a Wine Country Tour. We were still en route when the tour took place, but I was told it was a pleasant 100-mile jog through country roads amid the colorful, but muted, foliage of Northwest Arkansas.

War Eagle Driving Group 1 ready for takeoff. Eureka Springs, Arkansas, nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, has long been a mecca for sports car aficionados. Clubs catering to specific marques, such as Alfa Romeo, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, and Porsche, all flock to the area, like birds instinctively flying south, just to drive. And that’s what Porsches are all about, right? Driving. Quickly. On undulating, twisty ribbons of tarmac. The Ozarks are one of the premier havens in the U.S. where sports car enthusiasts can exercise their rides and challenge their driving skills in one of the best environments in the Mid-South. And every year since its inception, the Palooza has served as an excellent springboard for spirited driving. The first Palooza was held in 2005, the brainchild of Leonard and Melody Zechiedrich. At that first event, 56 Porsches were present . . . some without drivers, so I am told. Just kidding. I don’t think that Leonard and Melody could have possible imagined that nine years later, at the 10th Annual Palooza, over 500 people, in 252 Porsches, from 12 states and 22 PCA Regions, would attend what has evolved into the second largest 16 February

Registration opened in the afternoon, and the first 175 Porsche drivers that checked in at the station received a gift from PCNA: a 10” x 80” “There is no substitute” poster depicting the evolution of the marque, from the first mid-engine 356/001 to the hybrid 918 Spyder of today. Each driver also received a T-shirt, compliments of Dallas Motorsports.

State Park rest stop PCA Palooza is a non-profit event benefiting Morningstar Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Gravette, AR, the Good Shepard Humane Society of Eureka Springs, and the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter. The “Palooza Fest” Welcome Party, where attendees could enjoy some complimentary burgers and brats, required a food and supply donation to the charities. There was also a photo booth, with a carnivallike plywood cutout of an early Porsche, where entrants could pose for their own personal picture.

There was BINGO, a “Name that Porsche Item” contest (won by Maverick Frank Briggs), a Tech Quiz, Goodie Store, Porsche model display, door prizes (supplied by the generous sponsors), and even a few car wash stations available. The organizers sure know how to provide, that’s for sure. Firestone made their presence known with a mockup of a Dallara Indy car, shod, of course, with the latest Firestone slicks. They also provided a driving simulator, complete with racing seat and proper steering wheel with paddle shifters. Attendees were invited to test their skills driving a virtual Indy car on a virtual oval circuit. Good stuff.

and shrimp salad. Leonard, as Master of Ceremonies, entertained the crowd, awarded the door prizes, and announced the “Show and Shine” winners. Four Mavericks won “People’s Choice” awards: David Griswold (965 Turbo), Craig Mabrey (993), Scott Boyd (993 Turbo), and Larry Hampton (996). During the festivities, it came to light that one unfortunate soul, during one of the morning drives, was stopped by the local constabulary and promptly ticketed for exceeding the posted limit; specifically 97 in a 65. When the officer asked why he was travelling so fast, he responded “To catch up with the other Porsches.” An impromptu collection was taken up, netting $450.00 towards mitigating the offense. One cannot help but wonder if the most enthusiastic contributors weren’t the most notorious scofflaws. But then again, I’m just sayin’ . . .

Twin Twin Turbos Saturday morning is when the real fun began, at least for me. It was time to DRIVE. There were four spirited drives and one scenic route to choose from. We chose the “War Eagle” spirited drive, and it did not disappoint. We slotted ourselves behind the leader, cutting a swath through the fallen leaves that littered the roadways, which were some of the most excellent roads I’ve driven in years. There was a section of the route that had recently been repaved, and it was absolutely billiard table smooth. The curves seemed to beckon the driver, like a seductive siren, to take them a little quicker each time. After two short hours, the drive ended, but it only whetted the appetite. I think I could have driven all day on those gorgeous backroads. After the drives, attendees were invited to join the parade of Porsches, complete with police escort, through the narrow, winding roads of historic downtown Eureka Springs. Then it was time to prepare the Boxster for the “Show and Shine.” The sight of over 200 Porsches, with representations of almost every model, was a breathtaking view. The cars were all lined up by model, which made it easy for attendees to individually judge them for the “People’s Choice” awards. Our final night in Eureka Springs was highlighted by the Saturday banquet. The menu was “a taste of the South,” served buffet style. Everything we sampled was excellent, from the fried chicken to the ribs, catfish

A rare sight these days: two 912s and a 356, all 4-cylinder Porsches, parked at the War Eagle Grist Mill. An autocross was held Sunday morning, but we elected to head on back to the Metroplex. Many thanks and kudos to Leonard and Melody Zechiedrich, and the three PCA regions, for hosting such a spectacular event. 2015 Maverick Autocross Series: An Interview with Wesley Lincoln Editor’s Note: As noted in last month’s Slipstream, Travis and Robyn Howard have stepped down from their positions in the Autocross series after many years of service to the Region. Below is a question and answer session with Wes Lincoln about the future of our popular driving event series. Slipstream: It has been announced that our previous Autocross Chair and Registrar will take a break from running the Autocross series in 2015. Who will take their place and head up the program? Wes Lincoln: First of all, I want to say that it is extremely difficult to replace people like Travis and Robyn Howard. They took complete ownership of the Autocross and Time Trial programs for the Maverick Region. Their leadership, energy, commitment and overall effort is first class. They would be an asset for any organization, and we have been extremely lucky to experience their professional manner of volunteering for our club. To answer your question, I will lead the Autocross program for this

year. In addition, I have joined my efforts with a few other club members to ensure the continuation of our program. We will meet them in subsequent Autocross articles in Slipstream. The look and feel of Autocross will change for this year, and I think we will be very pleased with the outcome! SS: So what are your plans for Autocross in 2015? WL: In 1967, a group now known as Equipe Rapide (ER) formed a club for the purpose of Autocross. Like PCA, ER runs a well-organized program that is safe, fun, and spirited. After much discussion, we have decided to join their program for 2015. I am excited about the format. Two new locations will be added to our list of venues: Lone Star Park and Mesquite Memorial Stadium. ER runs ten competitive Autocross events per year, and seven of them will be in the large parking facilities at Lone Star Park. SS: That sounds very interesting. How do entrants view the schedule? Does ER have a website and online registration? An easy registration process was one of the great things about the Maverick Region Autocross series.

WL: Equipe Rapide has the schedule posted on their website, www. autocross.com. This website has the link for registration. All PCA members will register for the events through the ER website. (See below for the schedule.) SS: Many Maverick Region members have not attended any ER events because they don’t think the class structure is very fair for Porsches. Will PCA members run in ER classes? WL: The PCA class structure will be instituted for all Porsche drivers that do not want to compete in ER classes. The PCA classes are designed to be fair and competitive for Porsche vehicles and we will retain this class structure for ER events. SS: Will PCA members have to pay the non-member entry fee at ER events? WL: We discussed this with the ER Board of Directors, and they were more than willing to recognize PCA membership in lieu of ER membership. This means that PCA members will pay the member price for all ER events. Also, ER has a discounted rate for members that wish to pay for the series in advance.

Equipe Rapide 2015 Autocross Series Schedule Date 22-‐Feb 22-‐Mar 29-‐Mar 30-‐May 31-‐May 28-‐Jun 26-‐Jul 16-‐Aug 6-‐Sep 11-‐Oct 8-‐Nov

SS: What is the cost of an ER Autocross event?

it complements the skills learned in DE events.

WL: The ER events have a member entrance fee of $35 per event. This is very reasonable for a day of Autocross with the chance to earn awards. ER typically has eight runs per event. Compare this to the four to five runs in SCCA events, and the value/fun ratio is through the roof. If you have never experienced an Autocross event, I would encourage you to sign up. It will be the best $35 you can spend on anything. Autocross is absolutely exhilarating and

SS: You mentioned awards. Can you elaborate? WL: Yes, awards will be given to the class leader at each event. In addition, a year-end awards ceremony will be held. SS: If a member wants to contact you for more information, what is the best method? WL: The best way to contact me is via email. I can be reached at AX@mavpca.org.

SS: Wes, this has been very enlightening. I am excited about the new partnership, and am looking forward to attending the ER events. Do you have any more information to share? WL: Yes! If you have not competed in Autocross, it is truly a safe and competitive event that hones and develops driving skills. I have been to Autocross events for the past two years and have seen many models of Porsche compete. Any Porsche is well-equipped for Autocross. Come out and have the time of your life!

Sunday Drive: The Frick’n Toy Run By Tom Martin, Sunday Drive Co-Chair

he Annual Frick’n Toy Run was held December 7, starting at the Interurban Railway Museum in historic downtown Plano. Every year the Toy Run, initially proposed by Dave and Jean Frick, is held to raise funds for the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. Last year’s event was cancelled due to inclement weather, but this year’s event was held under cloudy skies and just a bit of December chill.

Katy Ritchie and Michael Trammell (left) with the originators of the Toy Run idea, Dave and Jean Frick a clean GT3 with “Arrest me please!” Martini racing stripes, and a brand-spankin’ new white Cayman GTS. Shortly after 1:00 pm, the first drive group headed off on the meandering 111-mile journey through Lucas, McKinney, New Hope, Blue Ridge, Merit, Greenville, Farmersville, Nevada, and Lavon, before arriving at the San Martiño Winery & Vineyards in Rockwall.

The Interurban Railway Museum/Haggard Park parking lot filled with Porsches and their owners as tour time drew near. This Sunday Drive was the last one of the season, and almost 50 drivers, along with their navigators, filled the museum parking lot, bringing their Sunday best for the event. Some drool-worthy Porsches were present, particularly Andy Kay’s ’79 Euro-spec 911SC,

The museum was festively decorated for the season. 22 February

Once we were out in the boonies, we enjoyed some spirited driving on some excellent winding country roads. There’s just something about the sight of a caravan of Porsches carving through the bucolic countryside that attracts people. Sometimes, the locals will come out to watch as the cars go by; some of them even wear uniforms for the occasion. No worries, we have our unflappable President John Hamilton to thank for arranging safe and uneventful passage.

Three hours later, we rolled into the parking lot of the winery, greeted by the owner Emilio Ramos, holding what appeared to be a glass of fine claret in his hand. A wine tour was conducted for us Mavericks, along with some tastings of the fruits from the resident vineyard. Some people even brought a “picnic lunch” to go along with their wine selections. When it was all said and done, $1600 in gift cards was collected by the organizers and forwarded to
