Road Ramblings by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President

T

he January issue of Road & Track magazine arrived a week or so ago. If you haven’t seen the issue- it’s a keeper. There is a several page story about the 40 year history of the 911 as told by Paul Frere, a full road test of the GT3, a quick update on the ’04 GT2, and a 6-page article on the upcoming Carrera GT. Add in a couple of Porsche advertisements for good luck as well. I call it a keeper because I do collect car magazines if the content warrants. I have a couple of hundred 1965-to-current issues of magazines that have special meaning for me. I’ve provided a couple examples below, so you get my meaning of a “keeper” issue. Besides the articles, the advertisements in a thirtyyear-old magazine are nostalgic, fun to read, and there are a lot less than in today’s ad-filled publications. It’s the old time-capsule idea, I guess. I search eBay, flea markets, and garage sales for old issues of magazines. Not only do I enjoy finding old magazines of interest, but also I enjoy reading Road & Track in particular. Half because of columnist Peter Egan, but also because it is well balanced between road,

Porsches have graced the cover and headline articles of Road & Track more than any other car manufacturer, and I’m not complaining. To change topics a bit, 2004 is here and I hope you all had a great holiday season. I wish you all the happiest of New Years. This is the start of my second term as President of Maverick Region and once again I am thrilled to help provide to you the services that feed our Porsche appetites. It’s the cars, the people, and the camaraderie that make it worthwhile. Those of you who did few or no events last year, please take my advicecome out and join us. It’s a blast. You have the choice of socials, racetrack driving, autocross and time-trial competition, rallying, tours, driving schools, and dinners. On top of all of that, in 6 months, the national Porsche gathering called Parade ’04 will take place the week of July 4th in Fort Worth. Learn more at www.parade04.org. Now back to reading some old car rags…

...how he becomes restless, joyous, tempted, insightful... racing, and exotic cars, and has the editorials and articles of a monthly periodical. They know we get our quick info from Speed Channel and Autoweek. I’ve subscribed for 25 years and this month’s article by Peter Egan is especially fitting. He talks about how when a car enthusiast has money and garage space from a recent vehicle sale, he becomes restless, joyous, tempted, insightful, but most of all, driven to replace the vehicle and fill the space. I’ll admit I suffer from the illness at times. I’m betting 5

2 for 2 As one of only two dealerships in the country to earn the Premiere Dealer and Perfect Service Award - and the only one in the Lone Star State - we were, shall we say, a bit excited. Thanks to our incredible clients, our perfection-driven staff, and Porsche, for giving us a reason to celebrate today, and every day.

Curves Ahead by Matt Platts, Editor

T

he 2004 driving season is just around the corner! If Santa didn’t already bring you new tires and brake pads, it’s time to put an order together. The Maverick Region’s annual driving schools are getting under-way very soon, we start in February with the TT104 advanced school, followed by AX101 and the Ladies AX School, then cap things off with AX102/TT103 in early March. Then don’t forget about our first Driver’s Education of the year at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, the date to get your application in the mail is January 8th. Now is the time to brush up on your skills and expand your driving prowess while having fun and hanging around with the other car nuts while talking about tires, sway bars, springs and shocks. One of the articles that you will find in this issue is a recap of the Founders Day Banquet. I didn’t have room last month to fit the complete list of the award recipients along and the final standings of our driving events. You will find those results along with a few more photos (many are duplicates – sorry, that’s all the photos I had) on pages 20 and 21.

Maverick Minutes by Mimi Spreen

ttendees: Matt Platts, Jan Mayo, Wendy & James Shoffit, Charlie & Teri Davis, Bob Knight, Lanean Hughes, Joe McGlohen, Mark Gluck, Dennis Chamberlain, Mike Brodigan, Michael Wingfield, Joel Nannis, Noby Takahashi, Cody Sears, Mimi & Carey Spreen, Keith & Karen Olcha. The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm at the home of Keith & Karen Olcha on Tuesday, Dec 9, 2003. Keith started off the 'Round the Room as John Sandusky said an application was submitted to add another DE to the calendar. Mike Oakes doesn't have time to be the Webmaster anymore. Keith talk to some people who've expressed an interest to see if they are still interested and then will send out an email asking for volunteers, if necessary. Dennis - Happy Hour on 12/18 at The Elephant Bar in Addison. Has special parking for Porsches. Now printing posters so restaurants can advertise in advance. Keith has volunteered to take the posters to the Porsche dealers for them to post as well. Joe McGlohen - Flags and radios were rented out and received back with no problems. Suggests that earpieces for the radios may be worth the $25.00 per. Will submit a request to the board at a later date. Cody - needs to run ad for the Autocross schools. Teri - Tried a new concept at the last rally. It could be run as a rally or a tour. Worked out well and people enjoyed it. It lasted approximately 2 1/2 hours. May try some next year, but busy with Parade stuff. Rally clocks are being tested by Charlie to see if the battery is worth saving or should we buy new ones. Proposing we get rid of the old battery packs and get new ones. Will save what we can. 8

Noby - no events requiring insurance in January. Mike Brodigan - Advertising going well. Lanean - Letter from Lisa, the administrator at Hope, thanking us for a great evening at Founder's Day. There was a stocking stuffer party held at Laneans on 12/7 (I was busy watching the Eagles destroy the Cowboys). Lots of stockings to take to the shelter. Kevin Procaccino from Mercedes Home is having flooring, carpeting, paint and tile delivered and his employees will be volunteering to come to the shelter and replace the old with the new. Lanean is requesting plaques for each dealer in appreciation for their help and support, the expenditure was approved. Charlie - truxter ok. Bob Knight - needs information on Mineral Wells dates and deposit information. Wendy - Slipstream delivered to Ussery on 11/21 and mailed on 12/4. Ussery now knows that it goes directly to the mail house, so the delivery date should be better from now on. She has a person in mind to replace Mike Oakes, but wants to wait and change everything all at the same time. Creating consistency is the goal. Need an experienced person. Jan - National Parade staff was here in Dallas for a Parade meeting and were pleased with answers and how much we've done. Another meeting scheduled for Jan 17 and then again on April 17. Matt - needs information for Jan. Slipstream. Holiday party pictures, minutes, etc. Has requested a new computer since the old one is 5 years old. Discussions have been taking place with the board and he's anxiously waiting to get the ok. Motion made to adjourn the meeting at 8:40, seconded and passed.

Happy Hour at The Abby Grill by Dennis Chamberlain

Eddie Black, who has a new 2003 Boxster, had just joined the club a few days before the happy hour. I’m not sure how he found out about the happy hour so quickly, but he ended up being the last one of our members to leave (except for me).

Mark Hanna & Tinker Edwards

New member Jim Deutschmann (2002 Boxster S) was also attending his first Maverick function, and teamed up with Mark Hanna and Mark Gluck for what I’m sure turned out to be more driving advice than he ever wanted to hear.

The drive to Richardson isn’t pretty if you have to come through the High Five construction. But it was convenient for our Richardson and Plano people, so we’ll have to repeat it one of these days. For our January 15 Happy Hour, we’re finally returning to the place that seems to be the all time favorite - Nuevo Leon at Oak Lawn and Cedar Springs. Hope to see you there.

he Abbey Grill was the scene of our first Happy Hour ever in Richardson, and we had a large turnout of 42 Mavericks, including quite a few faces that we haven’t seen in a long time. From my vantage point, it appeared that just about everybody was having a good time, with or without the loud music.

“Thank You” from the Hope Shelter

Dear Porsche Club,

Thank you so much for the beautiful new Maytag washer and dryer! The residents think it’s wonderful! I would like to thank you for being so supportive of our organization and our programs. This is a challenging job, and I appreciate the confidence your group has given us. Remember to Renew! Contrary to magazines which start reminding you to renew 13 years before your current subscription expires, PCA only sends out one renewal notice. If you do not pay your dues before (or *slightly* after) your membership expires, you will be dropped from the national roster. That means you'll no longer get Panorama, Slipstream, or first priority into DEs! PCA makes it easy to renew with both mail-in forms and online registration. Besides, it's only $42 per year! If you are thinking of not renewing, please contact one of the board members on page 4 so we can know what we're doing that isn't suiting you. If we don't know that there's a problem, we can't fix the problem. We want you to be happy in the club and are doing our very best to schedule a variety of events for everyone. Help us help you and RENEW!

Maverick Mini-Rally & Tour By Bill Middleton

T

most of the first leg, Teri and her white Honda kept all of us in the Porsche train behind fully involved in just keeping her in sight! Between getting fleeting glimpses of the rear of the white Honda disappearing around the next curve ahead, trying to listen to instructions from my navigator, and keeping the 930 from going into tailswap, we had a handful – but was it fun!

he morning dawned crisp, clear, and bright. The sun glinted off the bright surfaces of the row of precisely prepared machines, patiently awaiting their appointed time to roar to life and off into the day’s adventures. Pilots and navigators gathered in small groups to discuss the plans for the day over steaming cups of coffee. An opening scene from a WWII movie? Nope. The opening scene of the November rally and tour!

At the noon stop, the Madison Grill provided great eats, a quiet place to gather ourselves, check progress and scores, and for some in the rally group to decipher where they missed some instruction or turn. The lineup of Porsches in the front lot provided great ‘eye candy’ for the other guests, and from the number of turning heads I doubt the locals regularly see such a display of automotive excellence.

On Saturday, November 22nd, a group of 9 Porsches and their enthusiastic drivers and navigators showed up at University Park to participate in the last rally and tour of the season. Organized by Teri Davis and her highly capable co-rallymasters, the event was billed as a scenic rally and tour through some of the best local roads in the areas southwest of Fort Worth. As with the Palo Pinto Tour some months back, this was an excellent opportunity to discover some GREAT driving and touring roads right at our own back door.

Once opening formalities (and the prerequisite coffee and pit stops to Starbucks!) were over, the rally instructions were given, car numbers assigned, and watches synchronized. Done as a ‘tulip’ rally, this was to be an event with enough challenge to keep everyone interested, but at the same time have enough free time in the car to enjoy the scenery and roads.

...suddenly, the city vanished into rolling hills, winding roads, and ranches...

Cars in the Tour group followed Teri’s lead The second leg turned out to be just as challenging, but also different – longer roads, less surprise snap turns and course changes, and some really super elevation changes with spectacular vistas of the surrounding areas.

It all ended too soon as, with the sun starting to drop in the West, we breezed back into downtown Granbury for closing scoring, trophies, and homemade desserts on the courthouse square at Anderson’s. Other than a surprise attack by an antique table that didn’t want to be moved, it truly was a sweet ending to a great road day. Very unique ‘steering wheel’ trophies went to the top three rally teams, and kudos to all for not getting lost! Many thanks to Teri and all her helpers in putting this together and the participants for making this a great fall day in the country! Following is a summary of participants, places taken, and most importantly, those who did all the hard work!

The rally group departed at 10:45 AM to begin the first leg of the course. The tour group, led by Teri acting as sweep car, departed 10 minutes behind the last rally car. We headed out west of Fort Worth on I-30, turning south onto the 820 loop, off at Chapin Road – and suddenly, the city vanished into rolling hills, winding roads, and ranches. Over the course of the next two hours, we were treated to wide open grazing land, little winding back roads through trees and valleys, and spectacular views from hilltops we didn’t even know existed. Little did we know that, in doing the tour leg and following Teri through the course, we would wind up feeling a lot like Alice from Wonderland pursuing the white rabbit through the garden! For 14

Maverick Driving Schools - Class of 2004 By Kevin Hardison

T

ime to get ready for school! The Maverick Region is sponsoring five driving school days this year to help get you ready for the upcoming driving season. We have something for everyone this year, from “Newbies” to Club Racers looking for an opportunity to do a little testing and tuning. Everyone is encouraged to participate regardless of their experience. This year all of the school days will occur before the start of the official Time Trial and Autocross seasons. We encourage everyone interested in driving, instructing or helping out this year to email drivingschools@mavpca.org now to get on the email list for updates and more info. Advanced Time Trial 104 - TT104 Mineralring - Mineral Wells, Texas - Saturday, February 7th This is the “Advanced” school you may have heard rumors about. All three of our standard time trial courses will be setup on the same day. It has a very limited number of openings, so be sure to email us early. Club Racers, Drivers Education junkies and AX/TT instructors are especially encouraged to apply. Students should have some driving experience and must bring their own helmets. Make sure you have plenty of tread on your tires . . . you’ll need it! The day will start early with the maximum track time planned possible. Drivers will be paired up and you will be either driving, riding or working corners together for the entire day! Instructor’s cars must have a second seat for their students to ride with them. A few exceptions will be allowed. Parade laps will be immediately followed by timed runs. Courses #1, #2 and #3 will be setup in quick succession. No long classroom discussions here - this is a hands on the wheel class. Because this is a school, no official times will be published, but at end of the day a TTOD Time Trial Shoot Out is planned. Proceeds from this session will benefit the Hope Shelter in Mineral Wells.

Ladies Only Autocross 105 - LA105 Pennington Field - Euless, Texas - Saturday, February 21st Our traditional ladies school taught by some of our best lady drivers, many of them class winners at Parade! Guys are there just to setup the course, work corners and pick up cones. The top speeds are lower and all of the exercises are designed to help you learn to work with your car. Extra time is allowed to make sure you can gradually increase your speeds as your confidence grows. Threshold braking, slaloms and skid pads will be featured in the morning. An actual autocross will be setup and held in the afternoon. This is a fully instructed event and you will always have someone to help you throughout the day. Timed Fun Runs for workers and instructors at the end of the day. Intro to Autocrossing 101 - IA101 Pennington Field - Euless, Texas - Sunday, February 22nd This school shares the same format as the Ladies School from the previous day. Ladies can take both days if they wish to. This is the perfect introduction to how to attend an autocross. Students and Instructors will work the corners during the autocross to gain valuable insights. Timed Fun Runs for workers and instructors. Autocross 102 - AX102 Mineralring - Mineral Wells, Texas - Saturday, March 6th Part 1 of our 2-day school featuring more exercises and a longer AX course. The Mineralring is perfect for exploring the limits of your car. Students will get the chance to learn what your ABS and Stability Control Systems will and will not do! Time Trial 104 - TT103 Mineralring - Mineral Wells, Texas - Sunday, March 7th Part 2 of our 2-day school featuring multiple laps and higher speeds. High speed handling and transitions will be explored in the morning. An actual Time Trial will take place in the afternoon to help prepare you for the season ahead.

Maverick Holiday Party by Matt Platts

O

...I could have spent my entire visit in the “play area”...

Yes, German cars are hiding behind this american steel!

including posters, models, and 1/64th scale car collections. Just around the corner from the garage was the incredible home theater with a pool table and wet bar nearby. I could have spent my entire visit in the “play area” and not been disappointed at all.

ur hosts Jan, Lisa, and Nieman Walker opened their beautiful home for the 2003 annual holiday party. The Walker house provided a wonderful setting with plenty of room for everyone to relax. Maverick’s quickly discovered Jay’s garage, filled with fine examples of German precision and american muscle. The garage was decorated with memorabilia

The living room was the most popular place to socialize

Finding a place to sit among all the food was challenging at times

One of the Walker’s 9 Christmas trees 22

I would like to extend a special thanks to the Walkers for inviting us into their home. Joe McGlohen should be commended once again for his barbeque, and thanks to Mimi Spreen for tracking the RSVP’s and coordinating the other dishes.

The “living area” of the Walker’s house was just as impressive. The newly remodeled kitchen was incredible, stainless steel everywhere! Joe McGlohen had plenty of room to spread out his signature barbeque and trimmings. Maverick members all provided side dishes and deserts - there were two large tables covered with wonderful dishes, salads, and special creations. Another table out in the sun room had a delectable array of deserts. I did my best to sample everything, but try as I might, there was just too much food!

Blastin-on-the-Bayou Club Race by Joe McGlohen Or: “How to loose all your stress in 30 minutes in Deep South Louisiana”

...14 turns, lots of subtle elevation changes, and a real hoot to run...

I

n all there were over 40 Club Race entrants and 60 plus Drivers Ed participants. From the program, Brian Billings, Jim Buckley, Jim Collier, Brian Henderson, Myself, Keith Olcha, David Baker, Lee Wilkins and Rick Kassel from Maverick attended plus at least seven other friends from Lone star, Hill Country and Longhorn Regions

The track is a wonderful (914 driver prejudice) 1.8 mile circuit with at least 14 turns, lots of subtle elevation changes, and a real hoot to run. A stock 914 in an interclass race has no issue with making a solo GT-2 car wait until a more opportune time to go by. On the other hand, I have some great video of the F cars

Jockeying into position for turn 1 John Cotter (the last other remaining 914 J car) and I could not help him even after hours of mind, mutual parts box swapping, and soul searching. (Hallett had been neat with four of us “J Cars” running... I hope it happens again.) Last on that list of bummers was when I left the grid for the first race and the car died due to a minor electrical issue and I got to watch the first race from the closest corner station.

High Point of the Weekend was Worker’s Choice in my run group: Rusty Tilton in his almost but not quite stock 914 1.8 GT-5S (He beat me soundly this year as opposed to my just barely-keeping him at bay last year). Many Mav’s captured first places in class including Jim Buckley and Bryan Henderson. The entire results are available on the PCA web site under club racing results for NPR. We stole most of the gold. In closing, (pirating from Brad Bradford, Mardi Gras Region President) each PCA Club Race seems to have its own unique character. For some it is the legendary track, for others it is the large field or the accommodations of the facility. No Problem Raceway has more accommodations than most tracks I have run in 36 years of chasing races, and it has the most FUN QUOTIENT of any PCA Club Race I have run since I started with PCA in 1997. And they really know how to party in Louisiana! It is a FUN, safe track, with “No Problems” two years in a row. To a PCA club racer that means that there were not any attributable incidents the entire weekend. WAY COOL! THAT IS WHY I STARTED RACING AGAIN IN PCA CLUB RACING! Let’s do it again next year!

Many of the Maverick Region members gather on grid lapping me in the final race of the weekend at turn one. Bryan Henderson, Mike Lapp (HCR) and others put on a great show, just ahead of me (I’m selling copies). Henderson congratulated me on my late turn in to give everyone time to “play” through the turn.

For me, the biggest disappointment of the weekend was Bill Jacobi not being there due to a personal emergency, and Mav Rick Kassel having to bail out due to a mysterious engine problem,

Keith Olcha being closely followed by Bryan Henderson. 24

A rainbow of different colors (trust me!)
