The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, the Maverick Region President

H

appy New Year to everyone! I hope you all had a joyous and safe holiday season and that your 2006 is off to a good start. It's hard to believe that it has been twelve months since I first sat down and tried to figure out something to say to fill this space. The time has passed quickly, and for the most part, has been lots of fun. With benefit of hindsight, 2005 was a great year for the Maverick Region. Tons of challenging driving events, super socials, interesting Slipstream articles, and outstanding progress on the new building for our favorite charity, Hope Shelter. Looking ahead, 2006 promises to offer new and expanded ways to enjoy your Porsche and interact with your Maverick friends. We have a solid mix of experienced folks and energized new board members, so we should be able to get the year off to a productive start. The social aspects of the club never really slow down. The New Members’ Party in January will provide some entertaining and informative new twists. This is followed in February by a new wine tasting event that Tracey and Ed have organized. Our driving events don't slow down much either. Teri Davis has planned a rally school in January to introduce interested parties to the basics of rallying. In February we conduct the first

of three sections of our highly regarded autocross and Time Trial schools. Additionally, we will be running our first DE of the year on the newly expanded track at MotorSport Ranch, and at a bargain price. Speaking of MotorSport Ranch, we are already getting good reports regarding their new track on the other side of Houston. The rumor mill continues to buzz about a potential new track development near the DFW area as well. Always a good thing, new driving venues within reasonable distance of the Metroplex! So, as you can probably tell from just a very brief preview, 2006 promises to be a full, fun year for the Maverick Region. To be sure that you don't miss a thing, now is a good time to download the full years event calendar from our website (http://mav.pca.org). See you soon!

Maverick Region would like to thank Al Zim for hosting the recent swap meet (Nov. 5th) . The weather was excellent for looking for that Porsche part needed for an up coming winter project or just getting your favorite little German car going down the road again. Thanks again, Al! From The Driver’s Seat by Wendy Shoffit, Slipstream Managing Editor

ell, another year has come and gone. They keep getting faster and faster, don’t they? I remember as a kid the last week before Christmas taking, oh, about a year! Now, it feels like that time passes in a heartbeat. Fortunately, I have Jasmine here to remind me how special and magical Christmas is and how long it *really* takes to get here! I’m blessed to have such a wonderful family and hope that you, too, are as blessed. I don’t know about you, but I’m planning to attend the first DE at the new MSR track! With the track increasing from 1.7 miles to the “super sized” 3.1 mile track, it’s sure to be a hoot! I only hope they don’t knock me back a run group since it’s been so long since I’ve driven. I wonder how many of the guys I used to pass with ease will now look to me for the point by and zoom around? The past year or more I’ve been more focused on Autocross and Time Trials. I had to in order to stay competitive with Lisa Steele and Shelly Burbank in their new rides. I think maybe James needs to buy ME a new fast car! Right, honey? *grin* This year will be filled with even more diverse events to attend... more (and slightly different) tour days and a more rally events. Get ready for school days now... autocross, time trial, and rally! Oh, and bring your wife or teen on Feb. 18th as we attempt a school for both groups on the same day! Get in the drivers’ seat and enjoy the view! What are you waiting for...Christmas?

Maverick Driving Schools - Class of 2006 by Tom Snodgrass & Kevin Hardison

W

inter hiatus is nearly over! Are you ready for school? Maverick Region is sponsoring four driving schools to give you a taste of what competitive driving is all about. Though safety comes first, having fun is our goal for everyone. The focus this year is Porsche men and women who want to learn more about driving their car. Previous experience is not required. In fact, if you have taken the schools two times already, you have graduated. Please accept our congratulations! (Now we need you to volunteer to help put on the schools for the new people!) Students will receive full instruction from our excellent and experienced Maverick instructors. All schools are held prior to the start of the Autocross and Time Trial seasons to get you hungry for more!

Ladies and Teens Autocross (Pennington Field - Sat., Feb. 18, 2006) - This is traditionally our ladies only school taught by our best lady drivers. This year we are including teens (16- and 17-year olds with proper paperwork) in this low-stress learning environment. Many instructors are class winners at the Porsche Parade. Guys are just there to set up the course, work corners, and pick up cones during this very well organized school. Top speeds are lower, and all of the exercises are designed to help you learn about your car. There is plenty of time to gradually increase your speeds as your confidence grows. This is a great school for ladies that want to get ready for the driving season, or just “give it a try.” Autocross 101 – Introduction (Pennington Field – Sun., Feb. 19, 2006) - This school is the same format as the school the day before, but is open to the others, as well. Ladies and teens are welcome to join either day, or both! This school is the perfect introduction on how to attend an Autocross. Students drive exercises in the morning followed by a real Autocross in the afternoon. Students and instructors “work” the corners to gain experience as an observer as well as a driver. Fun runs at the end give volunteers and instructors a chance to join in as well. Time Trial 103 (Mineral Wells – Sat. March 4, 2006) - This school provides a specific focus on the Maverick Time Trial courses. It includes multiple laps on courses that are higher speed than the Autocrosses. Students learn higher speed handling and transitions in portions of the Time Trial courses in the morning. The afternoon is devoted to an actual Time Trial. Autocross 102 (Mineral Wells – Sun., March 5, 2006) - Though similar in organization to Autocross 101, the Mineral Wells venue allows for more and different exercises, and a larger Autocross course. Autocross 101 is not a prerequisite, so feel free to attend Autocross 102 even if you cannot make it to 101. Mineral Wells is the perfect location to explore the limits of your car. Students will learn what the car can, and cannot do, in a safe environment. General Info - The schools are expected to be sold out. We limit the number of students to ensure full instruction for everybody. This means: Register early to ensure your spot! Register at: http://mav.pca.org/mav/Events/Schools.asp. The Porsche club member cost is $35 for each school. (This must be the bargain of the century for instructed driving schools!) Non-Porsche Club members, and late registrations, pay $45 for each school. ** New this year: - First time students will receive a coupon for a free Autocross or Time Trial. 12

- Lunch will be provided for students, instructors, and volunteers! - We begin accepting payment via Paypal. Porsche Club members that sign up more than 2 weeks in advance will have priority. Acceptance e-mails, along with school details, will be delivered approximately 2 weeks prior to the school. Helmets are required and must have a SNELL 2000 or 2005 rating. If you don’t have a helmet, loaners will be available. You will be asked to purchase a head sock for a nominal charge (or bring your own). All cars must have a Maverick Region technical inspection prior to the schools. This ensures that any problems are fixed prior to showing up at the track. Inspections may be performed at Mayo Performance in Euless or Autoscope in Plano. Please contact Bryan Bell at tt@mavpca.org, or Brian Petri at ax@mavpca.org for more details. We need volunteers to help put on the school. Please consider “giving back” by helping out with setup, running, and taking down the event. We need you to register online so we know you are coming. For more information, or to register (students, instructors, or volunteers), go to: http://mav.pca.org/mav/Events/Schools.asp. If you have any questions, please contact Tom Snodgrass at drivingschools@mavpca.org or call at home 972-939-7967. “You can talk about your oil cooler at the water cooler, but you would be hard pressed to talk about your water cooler at the oil cooler.”

Another Winning Founders’ Day Gala By Dee Lersch

This year Founder’s Day was held at the Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine – an appropriately glittery backdrop for the Casino for Charity action and the more than 130 Mavericks who attended, many in black-tie. Peter Schutz, CEO of Porsche AG from 19811988, was our speaker, bringing more glamour and excitement to the evening by sharing his memories of Porsche’s return to, and dominance of, international racing events during his tenure as well as the engineering of the biggest positive financial turn around in Porsche sales history.

ach November the Maverick Region celebrates its 1962 founding with a gala at which the winners of the year's driving events are honored, next year's officers are installed, and money is raised to benefit our charity, the Hope Shelter. It is an eclectic event, a mixture of past and future, both poignant and joyful.

Treasurer, Jeff Atkins, taking his chances at craps... that is HIS money, right?

AX, TT, Top Driver, and even an award for Cone Killing, were given out. We had Rally series trophies, and Club Race and Drivers’ Education recognitions. Then our special award for outstanding club service, The Richard Selcer Memorial Trophy, was given to Wendy Shoffit - along with a standing ovation for all her work on behalf of the Maverick community. Event organizers Ed & Tracey Gross, Jan Mayo and Wendy even arranged to document that Mavericks clean up well: Linda Bambina and Charlie Davis set up a “Maverick Glamour Shots” studio. They snapped proofs, printed and delivered the photos at the end of the evening as a special souvenir of another fabulous Founder’s Day. If you didn’t make it to this one, put it on your 2006 calendar right now: “November, someplace wonderful, with the people with the cars.”

Mr. Schutz also significantly added to the treasures, and finances, of the Silent Auction by donating autographed copies of his book, Driving Force: Extraordinary Results with Ordinary People (Entrepreneur Press, 2003), which brought in more than $1,000 for the Hope Shelter! Casino “donations” and other auction items (including a membership to MotorSport Ranch won by a thrilled Monda Degan) added $1,500 more.

East Texas+Winnsboro+Great Roads+Autumn Colors+Porsches=FUN By Sarah Gutfarrin

A

nother touring season has come to a close, and what a great year it has been. Interesting places to see, fantastic places to eat, great places to stay, super friends to associate with, and then there were the roads...the reason we all do the tours. Roads, roads and more roads. And, they are getting better every year as Andy and Ted find new gems with every tour planning trip. Roads where you can discover what Dr. Porsche had in mind when he built his first hot rod VW in the lumber yard in Austria.

944 and the “Camper”

Besides the great weather, great roads and great friends, we did have some tourists from Canada join the tour in their...? Well. I am not really sure what you would call it. However, when we saw it parked in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, the main thought that popped into peoples minds was, "That isn't going on the tour, is it?" It had caboose written all over it, and to everyone’s surprise, it had no problem keeping pace with the rest of the group. Chris Smith, Carl Moore, and Bonnie Glover

This "it" could best be described as a Porsche 944 Motorhome. Actually, a Porsche 944 towing a gutted rear-wheel-only-944 with a trailer hitch under its nose, hooked to the back of another 944. Both painted flat black. Inside the 944 trailer were accommodations for two. Bed, refrigerator, and all the amenities one would find in John Madden’s motorhome. However strange the two 944s looked driving down the road hooked together, this oddity performed well on the tour.

The culmination of this great year was the Autumn Tour to the east Texas forests which grow in abundance around the town of Winnsboro. This is the area of Texas where a blazing rainbow of colors reminds one of the photos depicting the northeastern states. One contrast is that while we were touring the great roads and enjoying the scenery with tops down and air conditioners on--in November--most of the poor unfortunates who live in the northeast have put their cars away for the winter. Locked up tighter than a drum until April, waiting for the sun to come back out. Man, I love Texas.

By the end of the tour, everybody was pleased that Vicki & Gregory Poirier decided to do a Maverick Region event in their travels around the US.

The last tour of the season brought out some long lost friends who had gotten their priorities confused. They had forgotten to plan their 2005 calendar around the Porsche tours and as a result, found that they could not be in two places at the same time. And, their excuses are so flimsy. Business priorities?? Family priorities?? And, how about this one...other car club events! Brother, we need to think about blackballing that guy. However, it was really great to see some of the old time regulars like Chris Smith and her beautiful white and blue cab, Steve Marusa and his RUF lowered 993 Flaming Red Turbo, and Mr. Other-Car-Events, Jim Mayzurk, and his phenomenal silver 928.

18

Many new people were present, which is always fun for the group. As new people always mean new stories and new friends. New also for this tour were two female drivers. Bonnie Glover actually lead most of the day driving her 1989 Diamond Blue Turbo Cab and Marjy Chadwick showed her driving skills by piloting her silver Boxster through the curves like she did it every day. And, this was really the first time she had driven the Boxster in a spirited fashion on these types of demanding roads. She has obviously picked up a lot of tips from watching Jim drive, and to think we all thought that she had her eyes closed the whole time when she rode with Jim.

Check the PCA web site for future tours as they are all planned already and you can mark your calendars now. This way nobody will have to listen to phoney-baloney excuses when you are asked, "Where were you?"

American LeMans Ends the Year in the Dark by Bill and Marilyn Stafford Porsche Teams (official and non-official), as they would not let ANYONE in. Danny Sullivan and Dick Barbour were among those turned away. If this would have happened in other venues, some sort of Rules infraction might be suspected. However in this case, we will just believe that the secrecy was due to the “wow factor” and they were trying to stay focused. Roger Penske has always been secretive and his cars have always been yellow. (Did he/ will he buy DHL? Rumors abound.) Any way, the new Porsche is swoopy like the rest and during the race was running 2nd overall for a couple of hours which is quite a feat for being in the “slow” LMP2 class. Oh yeah, for what it's worth, I don't think it looks like an Aardvark.

lthough this was the end of the year for the ALMS Series, it was also the re-emergence of Porsche into the LeMans Prototype Class. Porsche has been noticeably absent from the top classes of the LMP for years, all the while watching the Audi juggernaut win and win and win. The new car was supposed to have surfaced at Road Atlanta 2 races ago, but was withdrawn without much explanation. While this event was the debut of the new LMP2 car, the pit accessibility was non-existent. We were told in the Photo meeting not to try to get into the pit, because of a FORMAL request by the Team Manager. This was quite a snub to the other Factory

disappoint. The Porsche ran like the Energizer Bunny and was actually in second place overall for an hour or so and finished 5th overall 1 lap behind the LMP1 winner and 8 laps ahead of the 2nd place LMP2 Courage C-65. As the race unfolded, it was apparent that the once strong Audi's were showing their age. This was the last race for the R8's in their current configuration as they managed a 2nd and 4th place finish overall. Technology marches on. The Other Race: The SCCA Speed World Challenge Race is always a hard fought one. This time it was a real door banger between the Cadillacs and the Viper of Tommy Archer. "Mad Max" Papis (Cadillac CTS-V) took the win with Max Angelelli (Cadillac CTS-V) second and Archer third. Maverick PCA member Mark LoPilato (Porsche 911 Turbo) started dead last at 28th and finished a hard fought 16th. The Cadillac win gave them the Manufacturer's championship over Porsche and Andy Pilgrim (Cadillac CTS-V) won the Drivers Championship despite not winning a Race in 2005.

#79 J3 Racing 911 GT3 RSR The Race: All four classes broke the track qualifying records and it wasn’t the same old Teams’ involved. LMP1 pole was taken by Tom Chilton in the Zytek 04S. Chilton, fresh from Sedan racing in Great Britain, was brought on board due to his experience in running side by side (bashing?) in large groups of racecars. (Works for me as the Zytek was nearly put out of the Petit LeMans race in Atlanta by a 3 car wreck at turn 1.) The Zytek beat the old Audi R8 qualifying record by 0.9 seconds. The LMP2 pole went to the new Penske DHL Porsche RS Spyder with Sascha Maassen at the wheel.

Romain Dumas in the Alex Job Porsche 911 GT3 RSR took the GT2 class pole but was bested by the Petersen White Lightning Porsche 911 GT3 RSR at the finish. The Panoz Esperante GTLM of Bill Auberlen/Robin Liddell led the GT2 field for a long while but had to pit for fuel which doomed them to a 2nd place result. When the flag dropped, all eyes were on the new Porsche LMP2. Chilton and co-driver Hayanari Shimoda did not

In the GT1 class, the ACEMCO Saleen S7R qualified at the pole for the first time ever. This was fortuitous for Saleen driver Terry Borcheller, because the car has been running for 3 years without a win or a pole and the money people are starting to get anxious (according to the usual sources) and he wants to keep the gig. On the other hand, the Corvette team (who usually beat the Saleen like…well, you know) went out to qualify and only ran 2 laps each to scrub in the tires. Rules say you have to start the race on the qualifying tires and when the flag fell they blew past the Saleen like it was at anchor. The Corvettes finished 1st and 2nd with the New Aston Martin DB9 of Peter Kox/Pedro Lamy getting 3rd.

Next year, the ALMS begins with the 54th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in March and kicking off a 10 race ALMS series.

Porsche sandwich at the Corkscrew Pit Rat Notes: This was Roger Penske's 1st visit back to Laguna-Seca since 1973 when he was racing a Porsche 917/30 Thunderwagon with Mark Donahue. Porsche and Lola are the only 2 marques to post 2 class wins in the same race. Last time for Porsche was Sebring in 1999. All 4 pole winners were on Michelin tires Maverick PCA member Mark LoPilato just missed getting the "Hard Charger" Award in the Speed World Challenge Race.

Chilton (20) and Shimoda (21) became the youngest driver pairing to win overall in the history of the ALMS. Bill has socks that old. It has been since the Grand Prix of Washington in 2002 when David Brabham and Jan Magnussen won in the Panoz LMP02 that a chassis other than Audi or Lola won overall Support your local Racetrack.
