elcome to 2012, our Maverick Region’s 50th year!

Yes, that’s right friends, your local Porsche Club was established 50 years ago (December, 1962) by several local Porsche enthusiasts. And by the way, the very first Porsche Club was established 60 years ago (1952) in Germany. So we’re one of the earliest and largest Porsche Club regions. We’ll be having articles and celebrations throughout the year, with a special committee focused on communications and events for our year-long celebration. So watch for announcements! We had a great year in 2011, with our membership growing to over 2,000 D/FW area members. And there was tremendous participation in our many events and activities, from Autocross to Founders’ Day; from All Member Party to Sunday Drives; from Rallies to May at Mayo’s - they were all great fun. So what are your plans for the new year? Going to join us on one of the great Sunday Drives or finally sign-up for Drivers’ Education? Or just drop in on one of our monthly Happy Hours. Whichever it is, 2

I’m sure you’ll have a great time and meet some new friends. Yes: it’s truly “not just the cars, it’s the people!”

Mav of the Month: Our December Mav of the Month is awarded to Christy Payne, for her terrific service throughout the year (and especially at the end of the year) as our Social chair. Yes: Christy is the one in charge of organizing our parties like our overwhelmingly successful Founders’ Day celebration, and our Holiday Party. All who attended had a great time, and Christy makes sure it goes so smoothly (which makes it fun for everyone!).

So thank you Christy for all you have done as Social chair, and thanks for continuing in 2012. Enjoy your gift certificate to the Silver Fox Restaurant. YOU deserve to be the “entertainee” for a change.

elcome to Maverick Region’s Quinquagenary year! Huh? If I called it the Semicentennial, would that help? Maybe the term Golden Jubilee rings a bell? I am of course referring to the fact that Maverick Region has officially entered its 50th year of existence. From a small group of Porsche enthusiasts that first gathered at the Arlington Fiesta Best Western Motel in November 1962, the Maverick Region of the Porsche Club of America has come a long way. Our Fiftieth Anniversary Committee has already been at work for almost a year, planning and preparing for a full year’s worth

of celebration, culminating in a 2012 Founders’ Day celebration that no one will want to miss! Be sure to check out these pages over the coming year to make sure that you are in on the festivities! For those of you who noticed the new name and photo at the top of this page, you will understand that I am trying to fill some big shoes left over by our outgoing Editor, Richard Bradley. Richard has been Editor-in-Chief of Slipstream since the beginning of 2009, and is stepping down to focus on his business. Last year, Slipstream won a First Place in Class V (Regions over 800 members) in the National Newsletter Contest at the Porsche Parade, due in large part to Richard’s efforts, so I will be doing my best this year to maintain the high standards that Richard has set.

Having said that, though, I am just now recognizing how steep the Editor learning curve really is. Richard is actually putting the finishing touches on this, the January issue, but I hope to be able to move into more of a leading role soon. All I ask at this point is that you have your cameras handy whenever you are at any Maverick Region events this year, and don’t be bashful if someone asks you to write an article - we love new and budding writers! Now I’d better go work on a catch phrase . . .

o all of the members of the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America and Friends of RAC Performance, including PCA Maverick members: after a gloomy and wet Friday and Friday evening, the next day shone bright for the 7th Annual D/FW-FCA Toy Run. The ORIGINAL D/FW-FCA Toy Run opened it’s doors at RAC Performance at 7:45 AM and we had people and cars waiting. We had great coffee supplied by Office Perks and delicious pastries supplied by Stratashield Customs and the people and the cars just kept coming. We had 100 maps printed and 1 test print map and we gave out all of them. Carolyn and I were in the last group and we ran with three people that did not have

President-D/FW Chapter Ferrari Club of America a map. So by my calculations we had 105 cars and about 200 people. The second page of the map this year included a RAC Performance $50.00 coupon off of your next service. So by attending the run you received something in return. The toy donation was huge and perhaps the To all the boys and girls this Christmas season. biggest we have ever each other at the restaurant. With collected. Maverick Minutes Madhu Rao, Secretary

D

ear Fellow Mavericks,

I would like to thank Wendy Shoffit, who wrote the following meeting minutes in my absence at this meeting. Wendy, thank you very much. Meeting began at 7:04 PM. John Hamilton started it out by announcing that the National Awards Chair, Tuffy Von Briesen, sent all presidents an email reminding them to start thinking about nominees for Region of the Year, Enthusiast, Family, Public Service, etc. So, he’s looking for nominations. He also reported for Christy Payne that we had 104 attendees at Founders Day. We made over $5000 for the Hope Shelter, not including the $500+ in gift cards received at the Holiday Party, at which there were 64+ in attendance. We decided to keep board meetings at Hackberry Creek this year, but are not going to have a meeting in July because it would conflict with Parade. Lastly, John reported that the Veteran’s Day group wants us to be yearly participants. He will keep in touch. Mike Brodigan announced that he has more help for DE’s, including Promotions Chair Pat Heptig. He also said hat they have a new one-day event format to couple with a Time Trial event. The April DE he wants on the 3.1 mile track at MSR. To help defray the costs, he will try to promote more and include other clubs. Linda Bambina suggested a women’s only DE group or mini event, which Mike will consider. Jack Griffin also suggested a teen driving school similar to BMW Club’s 8

December 7, 2011 “Street Survival.” That can’t be on a racetrack, though, and would be more like an Autocross event. Luke Edson said that the DE Equipment is mostly in good shape, except for needing some new “whip” antennas. Jim Falgout reported that we have money, with over $10K in receivables and $25K in the bank. Non-paying advertisers may be pulled from Slipstream. Richard Bradley said that Slipstream is moving right along. Although he is stepping down as editor, he wants to share some new ideas with the next editor (more about this later). Chris Christensen noted that since he is moving, he found his Happy Hour chair, Mike Farrar. Replacing Chris as Vice President is Tom Minnella. We will miss Chris and Ann. Tom Minnella received a flash drive with all the pertinent VP information from Chris and is all set. Jack Griffin reported that he has no official Concours dates set, but will work on it and include non PCA events on the calendar. Wendy Shoffit suggested the possibility of having a slightly more critical judging event, in case there are more serious Concours folks out there. Pat Friend continues gathering money from advertisers and is considering writing official advertising contracts for them to encourage more timely payments. Carey Spreen has agreed to replace Richard Bradley as next year’s editor of Slipstream. The only bad news is that now we need a new Rally chair, as Carey can’t do both! He has been pairing

up with Sunday Drives, which seems to be successful. A full time Rally chair may not be necessary. Interested volunteers should contact him at rally@mavpca.org. Brendan Eagan is continuing to work with dealerships to get them to include PCA packets in their car sales. He wants to make sure they include cars such as Panameras and Cayennes, not just the sporty racecars. For Sunday drives, he continues to find solutions for navigation systems. John Harvey has purchased 2 additional GPSes to help keep the group on course. They are looking at making a drive that goes to Meacham Airport & Museum and ends finally at Joe T Garcia’s in Fort Worth. John Harvey mentioned that the latest Wine Tour and Rally was a great event. He looks forward to having a new rally chair include a Hare and Hound event possibly in March. Rick Schwausch is wanting to get more involved in volunteering for the club, like his friend Mike Farrar. He reported for Mike that the December HH will be at Bavarian Grill in Plano, January at Wildwood Grill in Southlake, and February at Ruggeri’s in north Dallas. The goal is to have several couples host a few HH’s during the year to reduce the burden on everyone. Linda Bambina reported that the 50th Anniversary events are coming right along in their planning stages. She mentioned such events as a Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s, complete with bounce house, and a return to the Casey’s home for the Father’s Day Picnic and a Costume Car Concours. More later. Lisa Steele was excited to report that membership continues to rise. We now have 2074 total

members. The net increase this month was +22. The membership committee makes an effort every month to call new members to invite them to the Happy Hours as a jumping off point. Wendy Shoffit had nothing to report, but was busily scribbling notes as a substitute for absent Madhu Rao.

to get more attendees. While he hasn’t gotten AX/TT dates yet on the calendar for 2012, he was working with the University of Dallas to rent out the parking lots they own at the old Texas Stadium. He continues to look for local venues. Luke Edson suggested a

place in Plano he noticed being used once for a car event. John Hamilton adjourned the meeting at 8:07 PM, after announcing this month’s Mav of the Month is Christy Payne!

James Shoffit reported that he went to Houston for the Lone Star Region’s 50th Anniversary dinner featuring guest Vic Elford. Most regions only have one main anniversary celebratory event, but is impressed that Mavericks are going all out for the year. Travis Howard was preparing for a Saturday Autocross to make up for the event that was rained out. Entrant numbers were low, but he was planning to promote it

Porsche Palooza By Rob Turner

ool, cloudy and very windy. Northwest Arkansas in the fall. The leaves have almost finished their fall turn, freezing nights are more the norm. People walking the streets are bundled up, a few hardy souls sporting tee shirts, and the rest adapting to the change of season with more layers of clothing.

Caymans—flashed past us. We can recite the differences down to the smallest details but that shape is unmistakable: PORSCHE. This was the seventh iteration of Porsche Palooza. A celebration of our favorite cars, punctuating the end of the year, a last hurrah before winter closes in. This year, a record: 205 Porsches attended (up from 193 the previous year), along with the 360 owners and guests who take care of them. There was

Friday was 11-11-11, and most every restaurant and gathering place was filled to the brim: weddings collided with festive gatherings. Saturday morning seemed quiet, the town recuperating from the festivities the night before, the pace up and down Main Street ambled along. But appearances can be deceiving, like the calm before the storm: the sudden wail of the all too familiar Porsche flat six announced the arrival of an annual event. Sleepy Eureka Springs was sleepy no longer: she was up, and like a caffeine-fueled jolt, wide awake as a steady stream of Porsches flashed past.

a little bit of everything, almost all the road-going models present and accounted for. There was even a Speed Yellow Carrera GT, which by the way, was AWESOME.

Browns, yellows, reds and oranges; these were not the colors of leaves

I think for most attendees, the highlights were the Spirited Drives,

Time to fuel up...

We can recite the differences down to the smallest details, but that shape is unmistakable: PORSCHE. shedding their summer-green livery, but the color pallet of Porsches. You could spot a few green ones, along with black, white and a host of silver and gray. But those shapes, a pastiche of color, looked the same to anybody unfamiliar with the German marque. For those of us in the know—356s, 914s, 911s, 996s, 997s, Boxsters and of course 10

curve and shift points, there were two scenic routes: Beaver Dam and Thorncrown. The meandering kind of trip, easier on the senses—and tires. Better for those who wanted to marvel at the color of the leaves versus those who saw them in a blur of frantic motion.

consisting of three courses: War Eagle, Kings River and Roaring River routes. Each route was two-and-ahalf to three hours long. Judging by the maps, each had a LOT of very small squiggles on them. What did this mean? Lots and lots of turns! For those less interested in twists and turns and finding out the proper balance between torque

But no matter the route, the result was the same—smiles all around. I had planned to participate in one of the Spirited Drives. But during a routine oil change, metal particles in the oil filter media necessitated the 2006 Cayman S stay home until this issue gets sorted out. We took my wife’s car, a 2007 VW Passat. It was very comfortable on the road and we probably did arrive more relaxed and less hearing impaired. That Fabspeed Full race exhaust sure sounds great around town and at the track, but after five hours, it beats you down. I can only imagine its sound bouncing off sheer rock cliffs or swirling among the trees hugging the road, echoing for miles. Those in front or behind the CS, either enthralled or numb. I digress. The roster said fourteen Caymans.

There was at least one less… mine. Being a Cayman guy I had the chance to meet several fellow Cayman drivers. Bob Smith brought his 2008 Black Cayman S (CS) and Joe Gates brought his red one. Both were properly mod’ed for the track. I was most impressed. And most important? They each bought my book! Yeah, my kind of Porsche guys. Hope they enjoy the read! Speaking of the book (The Driver Book I – Decision by Robert L. Turner), the organizers let me set up a table and sell/autograph books. I got to pilot a tech session, too. I discussed how to get involved in blogging, writing and developing a voice as a Porsche expert (or at least enthusiast). The fact is, the explosion of social media means that the hordes are crashing the gate of conventional (and just maybe

old school) automotive journalism. More and more people are adding their voices to the rich dialog of all things automotive. Each one of us brings a unique perspective and expertise to the party. I encouraged the audience to get involved. Topping it all off, the big event: the dinner/awards banquet. Wow, it was fun! It was LONG, and I actually won something: a nice Wurth tool set. On the Cayman front, Bob Smith won Peoples’ Choice for best Cayman. Well, duh! It’s a fantastic car. But bottom line—the other Cayman peeps and I—we were there to represent! The big news announced at the dinner: No Palooza in 2012. But we will get Escape, the other large national Porsche gathering. And, get this: instead of 200+ cars, they’re expecting more like

600+. So book your hotel early and make sure you’re registered! Palooza itself will be back bigger and stronger than ever in 2013. Here’s the deal. The Ozark Region of PCA works very hard on this event. Leonard and Melody Zechiedrich and Chip Gibbons put in countless and thankless hours to make it happen. They deserve our thanks and support to keep events like this happening. It’s like my wife said: when the event seems to flow, to run without any hitch, you just know that it was well planned, down to the last and smallest detail. Yep, the Ozark PCA team planned it down to the last (and smallest) detail. They rock! We’ll be back next year for Escape and in 2013 for Palooza. But next time in the Cayman S, damn it!

Park Place Porsche Bringing Porschephiles Together By Chris Harsdorff

P

orsche enthusiasts in the Dallas/Fort Worth area are finding exciting new ways to participate in motorsports events, and are building friendships in the process. By working through Park Place dealerships, more and more owners are participating in organized “track days” to explore the true limits of the Porsche cars they drive every day. These events are very well run, incredibly safe and create a lively exchange of enthusiasm and friendly competition. Some drivers have even organized special private track day events. Ken Huston, father of Park Place General Manager Patrick Huston, organized a private track event on October 18th at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Jennings, Okla. Attendees included, among others, Chris Harsdorff, M.L. Speer, Charlie Lacy and Wade Andres. All were relative strangers just a few years ago, but after being brought together by Park Place and their interest in Porsches, they now participate together regularly in organized motorsport events every year. “We’re just a bunch of guys that enjoy the cars and experiencing the level of performance that they are really designed and built to provide,” said Andres. While the guys in the group attend many big motorsport events each year, they admitted that a small event like Hallett can be a nice change of pace, and a good way to hone their skills. The event is set up in such a way that drivers are grouped according to skill and comfort level, and instructors are provided to give advice and counsel on how best to handle the track. But more importantly, it’s

a great way to bond with others who have similar interests. “It was a lot of fun on the driving level,” said Lacy. “It’s nice to not feel the intimidation of going to a new track with 300 other people. But it was also a big relationshipbuilder for everyone involved. You get to go with 15 people, and you usually know 10 of them because they’re friends of yours.” Lacy, who works in the motorsports division of Park Place Porsche, met Harsdorff, Speer and Andres when servicing their cars. They all started out as clients he didn’t know, but are quickly becoming his good friends.

board will increase Park Place’s involvement in both amateur and professional motorsports activities, in addition to helping create opportunities for potential Porschephiles who are looking to get more involved in motorsports with the support of organizations like Park Place. But mostly, the board will be there to help facilitate fun, educational events (and special trips) like the one at Hallett. “I think if you’re a Porsche owner, and you really want to appreciate this car that you’ve bought, it’s important to take the car to the track and really learn what it can do,” said Speer. “I think

Harsdorff, Speer, Lacy and Andres and a fabulous weekend enjoying their cars as well as each other.

“We would have never met if it hadn’t been for Park Place,” said Harsdorff. “They have a great motorsports setup that connects you with specialists like Charlie. He works on my car; he works on Wade’s car; he works on M.L.’s car. Charlie is like the hub that connected us all.” Park Place has now reached out to Harsdorff, Andres and Speer to help form the Park Place Motorsport Advisory Board. The

you get more out of owning a Porsche if you really understand the power of what it can do, and through that, what you can do.” To learn more about the Park Place Motorsports Advisory Board and future events, contact Chris Harsdorff at ChrisHarsdorff@ executivesolutionpartners.com.

2011 Founders’ Day Celebration By Wendy Shoffit

W

hat do you get when you add 25-plus former Selcer Award winners, one current Selcer winner, Richard Selcer, Jr., a casino for charity, an incredible silent auction, three brand new Porsches on display, an open bar, and a fabulous gourmet meal? Maverick Region’s Founders’ Day 2011. You might ask why this year’s event was so massive. Well, we HAD to kick off the start of our 50th year in a big way. If you can believe it, next year’s event will be even BIGGER! Go ahead and mark your calendar for December 1st, 2012, for our actual 50th Anniversary celebration. It’s going to be EPIC!

Dick Selcer added a special dimension to the evening.

So, without going into all the minute details of the planning of this event, suffice it to say that we have a team of people already working on celebrating the 50th anniversary all year long. One member of this team is Linda Bambina, who decided early on that we should celebrate the best 16

Photos by Charlie Davis and Carey Spreen of the best of our region at this year’s event. So, she personally contacted every single Selcer Award winner for the past 36 years. One of them was so hard to reach that it required a personal visit to their home for Linda to leave a note on the door. Seriously? That’s dedication. Well, apparently emails and phone calls failed and she is NOT going to accept failure!

Porsche is getting BACK into racing, including targeting the overall win at LeMans in 2014. Who’s up for joining us for the Ultimate Sunday Drive to LeMans? Thanks to the tremendous sponsorship of Autobahn who not only provided THREE display cars (German flag: yellow, red and black) as well as several fabulous

We remind you that the Selcer award in Maverick Region is our Number 1 Award for the most enthusiastic and dedicated member. Robin Bradley and Christy Payne taking in all the Imagine that... Surprises of the evening! more than 25 of the MOST enthusiastic members in silent auction items (a set of the same room with all the rest of Cayenne wheels anyone?), but us car nuts. Topping it off, we were they also provided money for the delighted to meet Dick Selcer’s son open bar. Yeah, you read that right Rick, who truly was in awe of the . . . OPEN BAR. I wonder if that legacy that his father passed on. He helped to open more wallets than gave a most entertaining speech to usual, but I think more money was the crowd about his dad and how raised through the silent auction Porsche affected his life. Very cool. for the Huffaker-Hughes Hope As if that wasn’t enough, we then were joined by Steve Krysill, the regional manager of Porsche Cars North America. While you might consider a speech by someone from PCNA to be dry and uninteresting (trust me - I’ve been to a few Parades where I’ve had to endure some seriously boring speeches), this was not. English was his first language, so he was pretty easy to understand - except for that pesky Boston accent (Joel Nannis felt right at home). He showed some pretty cool videos and teased about some upcoming news. One exciting announcement was that

House than I’ve ever seen. We had some amazing contributors for those goodies (see the complete list at the end of the column*). In addition to the silent auction items,

You can see the joy of the evening on Joan and Barry Gibbs faces.

there were also plenty of door prizes given away so everyone had a chance to go away with something! The banquet menu at the Hilton Southlake was truly one of the best banquet meals I’ve ever had. Everything was cooked just right and the hotel staff couldn’t have been better. My daughter, Jasmine, is getting tired of me still talking about that crème brûlée dessert. We might have to make a special trip back to the hotel just for that!

A true honor to be awarded the Selcer Award on this particular evening.

Oh, you might be interested in knowing who won the Selcer award this year. None other than our illustrious editor, Richard Bradley! Not only has he done an

outstanding job with the newsletter, culminating in a first place victory in Class V in the national contest, but he’s also really engaged his daughter, Amanda, this past year in all things PCA. It’s tough to get that kind of excitement from the next generation. He has been absolutely superb and a true enthusiast this year, I’m sure you will agree. We will miss him next year as he takes a half step back from the club to focus on business, but I’m sure he won’t be gone entirely as he helps Carey Spreen take over as Slipstream Editor. Another Maverick Region Award that is presented every few years is the Gregg Murrell Award for driving enthusiasm. This year it was presented to Bill Miller, who has been our Club Race co-chair for several years now. He and Joel Nannis have an agreement. Bill is the event chair BEFORE the event, but once the day arrives, Joel takes over so Bill can race. Now THAT’S dedication! Bill is also moving on this year, making room for new blood (Pat Heptig)

to take over his spot. I just realized that our illustrious president, John Hamilton, gave these two major awards to people who were leaving their posts next year. What’s up with that? Anyway, we know the enthusiasm from these two won’t go away; it will just be channeled into something else. I know we have a slew of new and old members in the club willing to pick up where these two have left off. Are YOU one of those? There’s always room on the board for enthusiastic members. Just ask John about how you can get involved. Speaking of board members, we had a hotly contested election for the four elected positions. Returning to their currently held positions are President John January 17

Hamilton, Treasurer Jim Falgout, and Secretary Madhu Rao. NEW to the office of Vice President is Tom Minnella. Welcome, Tom! The year 2012 is sure to be tremendous and we’re happy to have you all lead us. This night could not have happened without the tremendous work by

Christy Payne, Lisa Steele, Andrea Bell, and Linda Bambina. A few more of us pitched in at the end, but these ladies truly did the lion’s share. It was an absolutely amazing event. Thank you, Christy, for all your hard work leading the team! I can’t wait to see what you all have in store for next year.

Fun in the Cold By Tannia Dobbins

ell, you know what they always say about good things coming to an end ... so they indeed do end. Autocross #7 marked the last of the autocross events for 2011. Hmmm. Yes, it was indeed an AX in December! This year was odd to say the least. You all remember the drought of 2011 right? How about the 100 consecutive 100+ degree days? Of course we all do! (Just ask my cows who saw their water tank dry up by the beginning of July.) However, what you might not have known that AX7 in December was the result of a rescheduling due to torrential rain! Yes, I did say RAIN! As we sat in the race trailer that day trying to stay warm and dry, we really did have this grand notion of doing a “rain” make-up day. After all, some people were actually in the hunt for 1st place

Class

in their class and really needed to drive! It couldn’t all be a miss just because of some rain could it? So, a deal was made that day we would scheduled a December autocross! I even remember Travis Howard saying that, “It isn’t as cold in December as it is February/ March when we do the schools.” We should have known then ... nonetheless, we booked the lot and made the announcement; the game was afoot. As the time drew closer the doubt started. Registration on clubreg was late so we really didn’t have an idea of who was really going to show up and, the COLD weather was here! Yes, was it going to be how cold that morning? Below freezing? In Mineral Wells? You can add the wind to a below freezing morning and end up

becoming a popsicle instantly. The feelers were sent out and mild interest was the response. Whew. Maybe frozen tundra would have to wait for inhabitants when we did the schools in 2012. But ... what about all those people who registered before? Time to get serious and make contact. Much to my surprise I had a people calling me right after my email was sent. YES, we want to run! It will be three months before we have the chance again. And besides, it is supposed to warm up to the upper 40s (maybe even the lower 50s) by mid-afternoon! I was hearing excitement from Porsche and non-Porsche drivers. Enough said. Time to get going. The turnout ended up being light (yes, it WAS cold that morning). But the faithful were there and our

numbers were enough to have the event. Richard Diller arrived a day ahead of time to clean the course (Thank you very much!). Robyn supplied a course map loosely based on the AX course at Parade this year. And, in spite of the freezing cold, the battery in the Truxster finally decided to give in and start for Travis. What I do remember most from the day, however, is that everyone that showed up came to compete - and came to help! There wasn’t a person sitting around waiting to run - everyone was willing to help get the show started. What a show it was, too! The course was a fun one and everyone got 12 runs (except those of us that were tire challenged .... is silver stuff showing through the tire a bad thing? All I can tell is that is sure makes for a slippery course). Travis had a special treat for the

20

fastest time of the day winner -- both Porsche and non-Porsche drivers were eligible to compete for a Maverick shot glass. Odds favored Dean, and Travis jokingly started to give it to him at the end of the driver’s meeting. But the drivers who came out to a freezing Mineral Wells came out to DRIVE. When it was all said and done, David Whitener ended up taking the prize. Way to go David!! (PS - Thanks for helping setup the course too.) And for Dean - I completely understand. Your tires were bigger so that just meant you had more ice cubes to maneuver around the course. :-) I personally would like to send a big thank-you out to all that supported Maverick’s AX events this year. And this goes out to Porsche and non-Porsche drivers alike. Without you we do not have an AX program. Your support,

enthusiasm, and willingness to come out in spite of the many obstacles and reasons otherwise keep me also coming back for more. See you in 2012.

Cliff ’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear

T

oday I spent a couple hours trying to get a 997 Twin to remember it has “Sport Chrono.” When you press the Sport mode button on the center console, nothing happens. Problem is caused by the VIN number being corrupt and none of the microprocessors like each other as a result. Tried simple re-coding, reprogramming multiple control units, putting all processors into final assembly mode (known as Transport mode), then doing what is called “hand-over” to activate for road usage. Porsche Technical is fully involved and it is just not what any of us think is the problem. I will get this resolved. Yesterday I looked at a two-year-old 987 with one of my techs and tried to figure out where it is bleeding coolant from. There is a huge build up of pink crust on the top of bank one. There is never a drop left on the floor from coolant leakage. Seems to only leak when fully warmed up and running. Engine will go about three weeks before losing enough coolant to be below minimum level in expansion tank. We let it sit and run in the shop until radiator fans cycled off and on indicating maximum heat load. Then I drove the car around and, just before bringing it into the shop, ran at 4000 rpm for a few blocks then red lined multiple times. Immediately pulled into bay, opened engine compartment and went in with a bore scope looking everywhere for fresh coolant. Found nothing. I thought maybe it had a porous head, yet could not prove it. It could be a head gasket but the head gaskets sealing on water cars has been absolutely bullet proof.

Is It Not Amazing? They just do not leak. I have seen a couple porous heads in past 10 years on flat six water cars. It is rare and will drive you crazy trying to diagnose. We have pulled heads and had them pressure tested. Passed pressure test at machine shop. Reinstalled with a fresh gasket and problem reoccurred. Replaced the head and problem resolved. In my opinion, when pressure tested under machine shop environment, temperature is too low and vibration is not present; real world operation is not present when tested. So I had a decision to make. Replace the head and see what happens? This is a Generation 2 Boxster. The engine is somewhat different. Maybe it is a head gasket. That is what I thought yesterday. Then I come in today after letting the engine sit overnight with 18 psi pressure on the system, and low and behold a drop of coolant is under the car. Coolant was slowly seeping from a hose connection to the filler neck mounted in the trunk. Liquid was running about 18 inches down the hose and dripping on top of the engine on the left bank (Bank 1 side or passenger side). It was something that was extremely hard to find. John had a seemingly simply problem to fix on a 997 Twin today - a buzzing noise from driver’s door. Pulled the door panel and noise eliminated. He insulated areas where panel clips to door shell and insulated all main contact points between panel and shell. The noise was still there. He hot glued all panel areas where different surfaces are joined. The noise was still there. He replaced the entire

Just another day at the shop...

door panel. Noise eliminated. Weird. He spent a huge amount of time trying to find the origination of the sound in that panel. Meanwhile, I will fill detailed reports to a group in Atlanta about such odd issues. My reports will reach a group of engineers that will look at every aspect of owner complaint, cause of complaint, and correction made. I will file the reports with photos and date of manufacture of parts, bar codes from parts and part numbers. They will in turn investigate what they see and forward to Germany for further investigation. This will generate better diagnosis procedures for us, quality improvements in suspect parts, and/or a slapping of vendors that manufacture outsourced parts. On rare occasions someone on the assembly line will be tracked down and given some new direction on their procedure. Or I will be told we could have diagnosed in a different manner. I sometimes wonder what others think about their jobs. What they do to earn a living. I love what I do, yet it can be so taxing at times. I get up each day and have no idea what challenge will present itself. C

Member Spotlight: Wesley Lincoln Lisa Steele, Membership Chair

T

Wes had made many trips to Colorado, where his dad currently lives, and couldn’t help but think that it would be a much better drive through the mountains in a Porsche. Wes shared a wonderful story about his dad.

his month, our new member spotlight is on Wes Lincoln. Wes recently acquired a Forest Green Metallic 1994 911 Carrera 2 that he purchased from a PCA member after seeing it at High Plains Raceway in Colorado. Wes has owned the car for almost 3 months and he has already driven it 5,000 miles.

“We are from New Zealand, and my dad loved to talk about four things: hunting, rugby, cars, and racing. He would eloquently speak to me about his racing heroes, Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart, and how they were real race car drivers. His enthusiasm for cars and racing is the reason why I started reading Road & Track as a child.

Wes began reading Road & Track in the ‘70s, and it was at this time that he became an admirer of sports cars, knowing that one day he would own his own 911. After going through many different types of vehicles like trucks and SUVs, the strangest and slowest vehicle he owned was a 1981 Volkswagen Diesel Pickup.

“The day I ew up to Denver to pick up the car, Dad and I went for a drive. Or I should say he drove and I rode along. If you

ever want to see what a 73-year-old was like as a teenager, put him in the driver’s seat of a 911 for the ďŹ rst time. As I drove home from Colorado the next day, I could not help from thinking of the huge smile that was on Dad’s face as we sped through the mountains. I know we are both looking forward to doing that again.â€? Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Wes and his high school sweetheart and now wife of 10 years, Natalie, to our Maverick Region family.

Happy Hour: The Bavarian Grill Article and photos by Frank Briggs

F

ood and Fun from the Homeland!

A cold and rainy December 15th became warm and friendly as about 30 Mavericks gathered at the Bavarian Grill in Plano for a festive evening of food, music, and a little dancing. The restaurant was crowded as they were hosting several holiday parties that evening, but it just added to the festivities. As always, the food was great and the atmosphere was lively. We were entertained by our own Rich Keesecker on the accordion as we dined (and drank.) I sat close to Rich as he was playing, all the while worrying that he was going

to make me do the Chicken Dance. I think I narrowly escaped that, which was good, as I had only had one German beverage of choice by that time. It was great to see that some of our newer members were able to join us for the evening. They included Bernd Fitzau along with Tony and Susan Kirch. Rich Keesecker does his best to ignore VP Tom Minnella’s If you have never “accompaniment” as Randy Csanadi looks on . been to a Maverick Happy Hour, please January 19th and plan to join consider joining us.
