Š2016 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times.

The everyday act of blowing your mind. The Cayman never ceases to amaze, time and time again. Its power is derived from a 2.7-liter flat-six engine with direct fuel injection. Combined with PDK, it produces a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds and a top track speed of 164mph. It's as surprising the thousandth time as it was the first. A visceral, sporty driving experience that you can expect across all models. Which is why for Porsche owners, there is no substitute.

The Cayman. Forever amazing.

Shifting Gears:

2016 Promises to be a Busy Year

By Jim Falgout, Region President

By now you have heard Happy

New Year a few times. The volunteers of your club have been hard at work to contribute to that goal. There are several activities being planned or developed to enhance your experience with your Porsche. I have been in other organizations and other car clubs. I have never seen one to offer so many varied opportunities as the Maverick Region. First, of course, is the All Member Party on January 23, 2016, at the Hackberry Creek Country Club. We have reserved parking for our Porsches (more than last year). There will be food and beverages and a cash bar. But most of all it is a great opportunity to meet other Porsche owners and to find out more information of our various activities. For those who want to participate in Driver’s Education Events, those will start in February and continue in April and May. We take a break for the summer heat and start up again in September. However, one idea that our DE chairman, Chris Tabor, wants to bring forward is having a four-hour DE (similar to the SCCA Track Night in America) in the evening during the summer months. Stay tuned to see if that comes to fruition. Another exciting event is Club Race. We have two opportunities for Club Racers to compete and for our members to volunteer. We are again co-sponsoring a Club Race and Solo DE at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin. The event is scheduled for May 6, 7, and 8, 2016. If you have never been to COTA, this would be a great time to experience that excellent track. In addition, we have several Sunday/Saturday Drives and a Rally or two in the planning. As you can see, we offer many ways to enjoy your Porsche. We have a variety of social events including lunch at three locations most months. Our monthly after hours social will resume in February. Stephanie Ho always does a great job setting those up and arranging for discounts for us. We are presently brainstorming about Founders’ Day which we have in November. If you have any ideas, something you liked or did not like, or something else you would like to see us include in Founders’ Day, please let me or Tracy Robertson, our chairperson, know. If you like to show your Porsche, there will be opportunities for that, also. We hope to again have May at Mayo’s, so stay tuned about that one. We will definitely have a show within a show in June at Autos in the Park at the Cooper Aerobic Center. This is a great venue, with lots of trees and grass, so you are not baking in the sun on a concrete surface.

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 To help provide support for these events, a new chair position has been created. We now have a chairman of volunteers. Jim Gallegos has taken on that role. So if you would like to help but are not sure where you are needed, you can contact Jim at volunteers@mavpca.org and he can connect you with the committee that could use your talents. As I always say, YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! Volunteer; you will be glad you did.

Mav of the Month

It never ceases to amaze me that when we need someone to fill a position, someone steps up. In this case this individual not only took on a very important and demanding role, he also started some other activities. First, he took on the laborious role of editor of this newsletter, Slipstream. He also started a Twitter account for our club and frequently posts on Facebook. Finally, he produced a 2016 club calendar using images from our photo contest that will be available for purchase at the All Member Party. Our Mav of the Month is Jim Hirsch. Thank you Jim for your excellent contributions to the success of our club.

Vice President David Robertson C 617-797-0516 vp@mavpca.org

David fell in love with the Porsche 911 when, as a child, he would have his parents stop by the old Forrest Lane Porsche in Dallas so he could dream of someday owning one. He bought his first Porsche 911 in 2011. He and his wife Tracy enjoy being active members in the Maverick Region.

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821 secretary@mavpca.org

Wendy and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now 18. They own 3 Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2016 Cayman GT4.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 treasurer@mavpca.org

Richard joined Maverick Region in 2012 when he fulfilled a 30+ year dream to own his first (of many) 911, a 2009 Silver Carrera! Although fairly new to the club, he is excited about being more involved and meeting more Porsche fanatics!

Gimme a Minute:

December Board Meeting

By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

The meeting began at

7:01 pm. President Jim Falgout announced that Jim Gallegos has stepped up to be the Volunteer Chair. Reporting for absent Stephanie Ho, the November monthly dinner social was very successful at the Hilton Garden Inn, with nearly 120 in attendance. He and Tracy Robertson are looking at Founders’ Day plans for next year. Co-Editor Carey Spreen commented that he likes the Slipstream changes that have been made and is continuing to work to get articles in. Social Chair Tracy Robertson reported that Founders’ Day this year was lightly attended. She is working to make both big and small changes to improve attendance. Fortunately because of the Autobahn sponsorship, the club did not lose money. There were a few silent items left to bid on for charity, and she is working on creative solutions for those. The All Member Party is set for Saturday, Jan 23. Activity Chairs will have increased time to address the crowd, and she wants “stations” for each event. Lastly, she’s working on a giveaway to participants. Sunday Drive Chair Tom Martin reported that Co-Chair Neill Flood had to step down because of personal commitments. Tom has the 2016 drive schedule set, including the Mitas Hill Winery in McKinney, annual East Texas Tour, and more. He purchased a portable sound system to help with drivers’ meetings and offered it to use at other events. Thinking the club could use another one to help with logistics, Joe McGlohen made a motion to purchase a second identical setup. Tracy Robertson seconded. Motion passed. Safety Chair Joe McGlohen said that we had a very good and safe

6 January

year. He is continuing to work with event chairs. Drivers’ Education Chair Chris Tabor recounted that 2015 had a rough start because of date selections, but ended strong. The class of cars has improved. He has the 2016 calendar set, removing a March event, but may add a weekday track night. He is also working on ideas to have an “Intro to the Track” session within existing DEs. More later. Tech Chair Ed Mullenix had a pre-DE tech session set for January (to teach and possibly certify people to do self-inspections), but has to reschedule. He will try get it done early February. He is looking at locations, which can be difficult. Calendar Boy Brendan Eagan sent an email several months ago requesting backup help. Charlie Wintch was quick to step up. They will work together. Concours Chair Andy Kay set up several events in 2016, including an April detailing session, May at Mayo’s, and Autos in the Park at the Cooper Aerobics center. He’s working to firm up dates and details. Editor Jim Hirsch is pleased to keep going with the increased Slipstream size (40 pages) thanks to writers and photographers. Membership continues to rise, and we will again need increase the number printed for distribution. Because of the holidays, he had to move up the deadline to the Dec 8 for the January issue. He received the calendars and mailed them out already. Directories will be going out next week. Treasurer Richard Solomon said the club is in good financial shape with about $175k in the bank. He received sponsorship monies. He wanted to write the club’s donation check to Hope. We had some discussion about Walmart gift cards

December 2, 2015 received from club members being a lower total than normal. He made a motion to send $10K as a check for donations received and anything over $10K will be converted to Walmart Gift Cards, to be delivered to Charity Chair Chris Hamilton. Joe McGlohen seconded and the motion passed. Richard also discussed the Boot Campaign and contributing to that worthwhile cause. He made a motion we send a check for $1000 as a donation. Joe McGlohen seconded and the motion passed. We are overall about $40k over where we were last year. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit reported that the Club Race went well with about 60 drivers and 60 DE’ers. The CR committee wants to purchase some items to help with next year, but we decided it should be part of the CR budget and not require board motions and approvals. She received suggestions from members for Founders’ Day improvements, which she will pass along. The 2016 Club Race at Circuit of the Americas is set for May 6-8 and plans are proceeding accordingly. Absentee Membership Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich reported that we are at 1616 primary (up four from last month) and 2524 total members. Jim Falgout mentioned that we always need volunteers for COTA. He also reported that Parade registration is a little different this year with hotel registration happening FIRST in December. Look for notices from PCA. Lastly, the Maverick of the Month is Jim Hirsch for his incredible contributions and willingness to step up to get so many jobs done. Congratulations!

All Member Party: By Wendy Shoffit

Start Your New Year With Your Porsche

The year was 1998. James and I

had recently joined the Porsche Club and weren’t quite sure what to expect. We saw a Slipstream ad for a “New Member Party” and decided to check it out. It was held at the home of Bob and Chris Morris. We loaded up our 11 month old Jasmine into our 1990 911 C4 Cabriolet to Lancaster. There were several dozen people there who were very welcoming to us as we enjoyed the potluck offerings and Bob’s famous chili. Region President Brian Scudder took special attention of us and answered all our questions. The main one? When and where can we start autocrossing? That event started it all for us. While we thought that the Porsche Club members would be total snobs, they turned out really friendly and very happy to see us. Fast forward 18 years later. The same event is being held, but it’s now called the “All Member Party.” The original intention was for new members who joined the past year to come out and have existing members answer any and all questions that they have. Unfortunately, there were a few years in the middle where attendance was way down. It seemed as though ONLY the new

10 January

members were showing up and the existing members weren’t coming out to welcome them! So, we changed the name to not just NEW, but ALL members. The location has also moved from members’ homes to business locations to neighborhood clubhouses and finally to the Hackberry Creek Country Club in Las Colinas. What started out as a few dozen people blossomed last year to over 130! The car show in the parking lot in and of itself is impressive enough to attend. A few special cars have been on display, including Carrera GT, 918, and maybe even a special GT4 this year. *wink* So, what can new members expect? The event is a come and go affair. Show up for as little or as long as you want. Come meet the people who share your passion. Come find out what our events are about and which ones might ring your bell. We will provide light snacks and a cash bar. Event chairs wear badges saying “Ask me about (their event name)” and will be stationed early at tables so you can ask away. There are others (like me) who walk around with a badge that says “Ask me about Anything.” Having been around for a few years, I have experience with all the events out there, so you can ask me questions about anything, including national par-

ticipation. There are a handful of people with those badges on. Ask us anything… we won’t bite. ☺ There will be an official sort of presentation towards the end in the main room for the event chairs to speak to the entire crowd about their events, but it’s not in tons of detail that could be boring to those not interested. After that, we will stay until all the questions have been answered or the country club people kick us out… and even then we’ll be in the parking lot once it’s over (and even later in Slipstream on page 4)! So, please come join us this year and find out why we say, “It’s Not Just the Cars, It’s the People!”

If you are reading and enjoying this issue of Slipstream and own a Porsche, here is how to get your own personal copy of the magazine each month. It’s as easy as joining the Porsche Club of America and choosing the Maverick Region. For more information, visit https://www.pca.org/ join-porsche-club-america

We hope to see your Porsche in this lineup at the All Member Party

PCA Palooza 2015:

An Eventful Ozark Mountain Weekend

By George Luxbacher, Region Rally Co-Chair

After attending PCA

Escape back in 2012, held in combination with Palooza, Dee and I have been hooked - a combination of great Porsche-twisties on the back roads of Arkansas and Missouri, along with fall colors (albeit a little past their prime), proved irresistible and brought us back year after year to Palooza in Eureka Springs, Arkansas! This year was true to form. While the drive up Mid-November from Dallas on and the colors Wednesday, Nov. were a bit past 11, with the Hartheir prime veys and Sorrels involved some rain, that was the last precipitation we saw until Sunday. Every drive was on dry roads with top-down (as long as you don’t mind a little chill and take full advantage of the seat heaters) weather. We stayed at the Inn of the Ozarks Best Western, where the convention center in the back served as Palooza HQ throughout the event. While the various drives didn’t start until Friday, we signed up for the poker stick gimmick rally on Thursday, along with the Harveys, something neither one of us had ever done before. I wanted to see if a stick rally would be something that Don Sebert, my co-Rallymeister, and I might introduce to the Mavericks. A stick rally map is a straight line with numerous cross-lines; in this version you picked up a playing card at each check station to fill a five-card poker hand. The idea, in theory, is to stay on the straight line, and the lines to the sides direct your actions at each intersection; there are no street names or numbers. I 12 January

emphasize “theory” because a concept that seemed simple was much harder to follow in practice. With Dee as the driver and me as the navigator, we came into the first check station from the wrong direction, although we still got a card for our poker hand, and then had no issues at all getting to the second check station. While we thought we had the concept nailed, it was all downhill from there. Despite four attempts at the next leg, including returning to the second check station and starting over, we never could match the roads with the “stick” and wound up lost. Over two hours later, we abandoned the rally and returned to the hotel. While I will probably try this again next year (assuming I can talk Dee into going along), I don’t think Don and I will be adding a stick rally to our schedule for the Maverick Region this year! Thursday evening ended with a social mixer - a great opportunity to visit with friends from other parts of the country we see infrequently. Friday morning we participated in the Oark Tour, a new 183-mile drive for 2015 that ran what seemed to be all over Arkansas, including “The Pig Trail,” a section of AR 23 that is fun to drive. Watching everyone try an “Angry Hornet” - a cheeseburger smothered in jalapeños at the Stop here to Ozark General try an Angry Store - was icing Hornet burger on the cake for a great driving day. Adam’s Premium Car Care, a company well known to the Corvette crowd, had a detailing station set up back at the Best Western to

demonstrate their products. Sorry, Jack and Andy, but I’ve now become a convert to their wheel cleaner and car wash foamer! Palooza Fest was held that evening but we skipped, along with a group of Mavericks, in favor of trying one of the great restaurants (Le Stick) in Eureka Springs, staying late in the evening to enjoy listening to Peter Maiella playing guitar.

Taking a break during one of the “spirited drives” Saturday morning offered a plethora of spirited and scenic drive options. Although we previously signed up for one of the spirited drives, we quickly changed our minds, given the nearly 100 cars participating! We then joined one with fewer cars, but still managed to get separated from the group mid-drive. Still a great drive, although Dee is ready to go “less-spirited” next year. We arrived back at the Best Western in time to join the annual Parade of Porsches through Eureka Springs. Considering car and motorcycle clubs go to Eureka Springs throughout the year and do this, I am amazed that the town traffic shuts down for an hour to accommodate the Parade, which is a lot of fun! One of the cars in front of us was even throwing candy, reminiscent of a Mardi Gras float. The Parade was followed by a Car Show organized around People’s Choice awards and a number of tech sessions. We even found time to squeeze in a round of

Saturday afternoon car show invites all to participate drinks on the roof patio of the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa with the Briggs and Koeppens. The 2015 PCA Palooza was capped by the Saturday Night Banquet, an event with innumerable door prizes, for which each car gets five tickets. This year I came home with a remote controlled Porsche model and a great coffee table book. Several Mavs won People’s Choice and Sponsor’s Choice awards for the car show, although I’ll admit I didn’t try to keep track of who. I do remember that Ed Mayo blew away the Tech Quiz! Final statistics: 13 states, 27 PCA Regions, and 260 Porsches. This has become one of the largest Porsche events in the US behind the Porsche Parade. With the close proximity to DFW, you really should consider attending this event next year!!!!! View more photos at http://bit.ly/mavphoto7

PCA Tours:

The Sunday Drive Program

By Tom Martin, Region Sunday Drive Chair

The Maverick Sunday

Drive Program has a long heritage within the club for conducting lively drives throughout the countryside surrounding the DFW Metroplex. From the early days when rudimentary maps, highlighted on pages copied from a Mapsco, to the present, when predetermined routes, loaded on sophisticated GPS receivers, are used to guide drivers, Sunday Drives let Porsche owners exercise their rides in relative safety. Typically, the first event a new PCA member attends is a Maverick Social. These events, formerly known as Happy Hours, are the springboard to all of our club’s activities. After meeting our interesting, intelligent, and even charming members, many new Mavericks will attend a Sunday Drive. Sunday Drives usually run between 60 and 100 miles in length.

The criterion for getting from Point A to Point B is neither shortest distance nor fastest time. The criterion is diverse and twisty back roads in the wide open spaces, devoid of traffic or residences. Not all Sunday Drives are held on Sunday. Because of the hours of operation of some of our destinations, we schedule some drives on Saturday. We try to avoid conflicts with holidays, observances, spring break, and other Maverick and National PCA events. Drives are generally not held during the summer months, when the sweltering heat blankets the Metroplex, and when many members are on vacation. Upon arrival at a Sunday Drive starting point, a participant will receive a copy of the Drivers’ Briefing, outlining the safety requirements that must be met during the drive, along with an overview map of the

route, as well as printed turn-by-turn instructions. All participants must sign a Liability Waiver. Drivers are assigned to one of four Drive Groups. After the Drivers’ Briefing, the Drive Groups are released from the starting point at five-minute intervals to avoid congestion on the route. A rest stop is normally scheduled near the halfway point of the drive. During the 2016 season, destinations will include locales such as the Mitas Hill Vineyard in McKinney, Revolver Brewery in Granbury, Rancho Sereno in God’s Country in Whitesboro, and even MotorSport Ranch, where we will be doing parade laps on their most excellent 3.1-mile road course. Stay tuned to Slipstream and the Maverick website to receive all the latest details and updates on Sunday Drives. Hope to see you all sometime on a Sunday Drive!

Porsche 914: By Tom Martin

The Ultimate Go-Kart

After my Porsche experience with

the 924 model, which encompassed three ownerships, I pretty much figured my time with the marque was over. Until one day, while visiting my sister and her husband at their home for lunch, I spotted a classified ad in the local newspaper for a 1971 Porsche 914. It was a 1.7L four-cylinder model. Excusing myself for an abrupt exit, I ventured out to affluent Fairfield County to view the Porsche. It was raining cats and dogs that day. The 914 was safely ensconced in an old wooden barn, draped in Canary Yellow paint, with a Spartan Black interior. After a very wet test drive, I bought her on the spot.

Tom’s Canary Yellow 914-4 In the ‘70s, the Porsche 914 was the ultimate streetlegal go-kart. Weighing less than 2000 lbs., with a power output of 80-90 HP, and a mid-engine layout, the 914 was a superb “backroads rat racer.” It had an extremely low center of gravity; the driver’s derrière literally hung a scant few inches above the ground, on a modestly padded seat, no less. In Europe, the four-cylinder 914 was sold by a joint marketing effort called VW-Porsche. The mandate of VW-Porsche was to build vehicles out of VW components. In the US, the 914-4 was marketed as a Porsche. Controversy ensued. Porschephiles were appalled. Nevertheless, the 914 was a successful venture, bringing much-needed revenue into Porsche’s coffers. The 914 was a polarizing model in Porsche’s lineup. Understandably, the 911 was the jewel in the royal crown. Porsche would never stray from its relatively small, but hardcore customer base; they would always put the 911 on a performance pedestal. The same rings true today. But the financial successes of the 914, the 924, and the 986 Boxster effectively financed Porsche’s efforts in perpetuating the legacy of the 911. Even though the 914-4 was the Rodney Dangerfield of Porsches (it never got any respect), I could hustle 16 January

Photos courtesy of the Author that lithe wedge around the twisties of Connecticut with amazing abandon; all the while with my son hanging on for dear life as we sped from one Radio Control car event to another in which he was competing. We utilized the 914’s rear-mounted battery and trunk as a “pit” for his endeavors. He was very successful in his racing ventures, securing several victories and multiple Championships, and we got to share a lot of good father/son quality time with countless memorable moments during that time together. Good stuff, for sure. The engine of the 914 was stuffed amidships, tucked neatly beneath an 18” x 48” panel located behind the rear “window”. At least that’s what my mechanic told me. I never actually saw it. In retrospect, the 914 was a spartan, unspectacular car, devoid of any modern amenities, such as air conditioning. It was equally lacking in some basic creature comforts . . . like heat, for instance. Heat in the winter months was more of a concept than a reality. The longitudinal steel heater boxes, originally intended to direct heat from the air-cooled engine to the cabin, were primarily just fodder for New England rust; custom stainless steel units were de rigueur back then. Even after they were installed, the “heated air” would spew forth from the tiny vents with all the force of an asthmatic seal. The 914 served as my daily driver, and as a newly divorced father, it was my only means of transportation, so there was no autocrossing or tracking. The Porsche eventually suffered an ignominious fate The interior of the 914 was too embarrassing to “spartan” in more than its color relate. Whether or not it met its ultimate demise is unknown. Nowadays, I find it amusing to read ads for 914s commanding insane prices. Once the bastard child of the Porsche lineup, with a questionable lineage, the 914 is now earning long overdue respect within the Porsche community . . . especially when it cleans up at a Porsche Parade autocross! Long live the wedge! Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of Porsche ownership articles by Tom. You can view his previous experiences in the April 2015 and November 2015 issues of Slipstream.

Founders’ Day 2015: By Carey Spreen

Maverick Region’s 53rd Anniversary

In November 1962, a dozen or

so fans of those funny little German cars with their engines at the wrong end met at the Fiesta Best Western Motel in Arlington to talk about establishing a local chapter of the Porsche Club of America. The charter from PCA was actually dated January 10, 1963, but November stuck as the real date of the founding of the club. Every November since then, Maverick Region has celebrated Founders’ Day. Based on the success of last year’s Founders’ Day location at the Bent Tree Country Club in North Dallas, Maverick Region’s celebration of its 53rd year returned there for 2015. Also repeated this year was the Photography Contest, organized by Charlie Davis, and judged by Richard Bradley, previous Maverick Region member and editor of Slipstream from 2009 to 2011, now living in Kentucky; Mark Gluck, also a long-time Maverick; and Jean-Francois Bulycz, who is on the Porsche Parade photo team, and based in Silicon Valley. Founders’ Day attendees also voted for a People’s Choice winner. See the list of winners later in this article. James Weber and Denise Etcheson set them all up in a dramatic display at the front of the banquet room that drew the attention of everyone as they entered. Also involved in setting up the display were Linda and Alan Bambina, Sue Crimm, Carey Spreen, and Tracy and David Robertson. In case you didn’t make it to Founders’ Day this year, you can see all of the entries on our website at mav.pca.org, then clicking on Photo Gallery, then 2015, then Social Events, and Photography Contest Entries.

Lisa and Mitch Huffaker of the Gift certificates, Huffaker-Hughes Hope House jewelry, parts, photo by Wendy Shoffit posters, clothing, and a weekend in a beach house were just some of the items that were auctioned off. See the list of contributors later in this article. Steve Krysil, a Regional Manager for Porsche Cars North America, has been a guest speaker at the last few Founders’ Day celebrations, and Steve was here again this year to talk about sales figures and race wins from 2015 (including lots of details about what goes into fielding a winning team for the 24 Hours PCNA Regional Manager of Le Mans), as well as provide tantalizing hints Steve Krysil giving us a about Porsches that are peek into future Porsches not yet available in the photo by Charlie Davis US, but soon could be. Not many folks can claim to have been an active member of the Porsche Club of America for 50 years, so it’s a special occasion when such a person makes an appearance at an event. Clay Perrine took the opportunity to introduce Al Zim, who joined PCA in 1965, as one of those rare members. Al runs Zims Autotechnik and has serviced the vehicles of many 50-year PCA member hundreds of Mavericks Al Zim at the podium over the years. photo by Wendy Shoffit

Another Founders’ Day tradition is the awarding of the Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award, the recipient of which is chosen by the Region President. In the words of the creator of the Selcer Award, “the annual trophy is intended to acknowledge outstanding contributions to Maverick Region and to inspire others to do likewise.” So, for her tireless efforts in coordinating monthly Maverick Social events and drastically increasing attendance at these events, President Jim Region President Jim Falgout Falgout presented the presenting the Selcer Award Selcer Award to Stephanie Ho. Five Speed Chatter: By Ash Seidl-Staley

Happy

New

Year,

Mavs! I hope your holiday festivities were safe and produced long-lasting and love-filled memories. I predict that 2016 is going to be a fantastic year for me, my family, and my Porsches. I wish all of you the same, and hope you can keep your various Porsche-related resolutions. Porsche is planning on having a better year as well. Last fall’s emissions scandal plaguing Volkswagen, Porsche’s parent company, shook the German automobile market. VW, Audi, and even Porsche were implicated in the breech of regulation and saw significant losses in their stock price as a result. At the scandal’s zenith, in late September, the share price of Porsche automobile holding SE (POAHF) plummeted from just over $70 a share to deep lows marked in the 40s. This

mark. As a Porsche owner, both in cars and monetary options, the scandal worried me at first. But then I realized something: it’s Porsche; they have just experienced a miraculous racing season in all of their major classes, and they always pull through in the end. Big news out of the recent Frankfurt motor show proved that Porsche is back on the prowl. The company announced its production of the Mission E Concept, a scathingly fast electric car. Whether Porsche decided to produce the speedy green machine because of the The emissions scandal, or as a challenge to Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla motor company, doesn’t really matter. The E is stylish, innovative, provocative, and is coming soon. The electric car’s concept model produced an electric equivalent of 600 brake horsepower at the rear wheels, posted a 0 to 60 acceleration time of 3.5 seconds, and has a battery range extending upwards of 300 miles. Porsche’s intervention into the world’s electric automobile market comes from their innovative re-

charging system. Using specifically designed lithium-ion batteries, the Company projects close to 80% of the car’s power could be recharged in as little as 15 minutes. Imagine: by the time you finish your lunch or register for car insurance, your car

Porsche Mission E Concept could be ready for another 200-mile jaunt up the road. Sadly, the new potential owners of the E will have to wait, as Porsche predicts mass production will begin closer to the year 2020. But by then, new mechanical and electrical innovations will be developed so much so that the final E might be even more spectacular. Either way Tesla should commence the shaking in their boots; Porsche is coming! Wrench on Mavs!

New Year’s Resolution:

Porsche Polishing

By Andy Kay, Region Concours d’Elegance Chair

Happy New Year! Have you made

your New Year’s resolution yet? Well how ‘bout we Polish Our Porsches! As an Obsessive Car Detailer, people ask me how to maintain and protect the finish of their Porsche. So I thought I would share a few tricks of my trade. This article is not intended to be a commercial for Griot’s Garage, although it’s what I’ve been using for more than 14 years and it works for me! Hopefully these tips will work for you. Step One: Wash the car.

Before the BOSS

I know, it’s cold out there, which is why I use a waterless Spray-On Car Wash. It’s formulated to cling to your vehicle and break up road grime so you can safely remove it with a quality micro fiber cloth. Please don’t take your Porsche thru the car wash. I don’t recommend the coin-op hand wash either. By pulling the trigger and using the

high pressure mode, all kind of damage can occur. Besides, you’re still outside and now you’re cold and wet! Step Two: Clay your Paint! Paint Cleaning Clay removes all the contaminants that sit on your paint. To get the clay to glide across the surface, you need to spray the surface with a lubricant like Speed Shine. Now dry with a quality micro fiber cloth. Your paint is now completely clean, smooth and ready to polish. Step Three: Paint Correction & Defect Removal with a Dual Action Random Orbital You’ve thoroughly cleaned the paint, now it’s time to correct and perfect the surface. Polishing removes defects which range from blemishes or light swirl marks to scratches and scuffs. The more serious the paint defect, the more serious (abrasive) the polish and pad. When

you remove defects, you produce a uniform, flat surface that is better equipped to reflect light, and reflection is what shine is all about. I have both the 3”and 6” Dual Action Random Orbital and recently acquired the new BOSS Best Of Show System for professional results. Depending on the condition of your paint and how you drive your Porsche, you have a variety of “next steps.” Is this my Daily Driver, my Weekender, my Show Car, or my Track Car? They are all different and need different levels of protection. The Texas Two Step: Complete Compound & Cleaner Wax Complete Compound makes quick work of eliminating defects while adding depth to your paint. Complete Compound starts out with superior defect capabilities and leaves an ultra-fine finish that is ready for wax or sealant. Now follow up with Cleaner Wax to remove any minor imperfection while delivering a deep, rich gloss that safeguards your finish with carnauba-based protection.

Final Step: For the wettest looking paint, it’s Liquid Gloss Poly Wax to the rescue Liquid Gloss Poly Wax is formulated from the latest synthetic polymer technology. This leading-edge wax delivers unparalleled protection. Its smooth application and lightning-fast wipe off make it easy to work with, and will bead water for months. I love the wet look so much that I use it on both my ‘79 911 Show Car and my ‘87 928 Daily Driver. Before and after Whether it’s your Daily Driver, Garage Queen, or Race Car, remember to keep the shiny side up and have fun in your garage.

Something to keep in mind for

2016: you can’t let the urgent overcome the important. By the time you’re reading this, most of us have already made, and broken, a number of New Year’s resolutions. So, let’s begin again with what’s important to us as Maverick members and consider some Porschespecific resolutions for 2016. • Bring joy and excitement to yourself and those around you by driving your Porsche each day (or each week, each month, or ???). • Purchase a 2016 Maverick Club calendar at the All Member Party in January to keep track of your Porsche driving days. • Participate in at least one more Maverick and/ or PCA event than you did in 2015. • Take photograph(s) and write an article about your first, favorite, or most recent Porsche experience for Slipstream. Our club is built on volunteers and is the epitome of the PCA motto: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”. In fact, take a moment in this new year and look again at page 4 and familiarize yourself with the many members who are volunteering in ongoing roles to ensure the Maverick Region offers events and activities that meet the interests of all of our members. Maintaining an active group of volunteers is the lifeblood of our club. To better assist in that effort, a new Board position has been created - Volunteers Chair. Jim Gallegos has agreed to take this newly created set of responsibilities and design ways for even more members to become

involved with making this club relevant for each of us. While not urgent, this is certainly important to address to start 2016. While I don’t often use this space to write about specific Porsche vehicles, as a 981 Boxster S owner, I feel more compelled to do so with the recent announcement. In case you missed it, the 981 model designation is no longer going to be used. Beginning with deliveries later this year, Porsche’s two-seat sports cars will be called the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. As Porsche noted in their press release, “The 718 model series is a continuation of the proven four-cylinder concept and the history of distinguished Porsche sports cars.” With the new design coming, the Boxster and Cayman will have equally powerful four-cylinder flat engines with turbocharging. The Roadster will now be positioned at a higher price level than the Coupé – as is done for the 911 models. Porsche will introduce the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman over the course of 2016.

You might have noticed a number of small design changes beginning in this issue of Slipstream. These are hopefully making the newsletter easier to read for our members. I’m always interested in hearing your suggestions, so please send those to me at editor@mavpca.org.

Authors and Photographers Wanted! We welcome contributions for articles and photographs from all Mav members. If you enjoyed the stories and images of travel, adventure, events, and collections of Porsche memorabilia in this and past issues of Slipstream, please consider sharing your story with us. Send your text and photos to editor@mavpca.org. 36 January
