The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, the Maverick Region President y the time you read this, the 2005 Maverick Region Club Race will be but a happy memory, and, in all likelihood, planning will have started on the 2006 race. By all accounts, our first Club Race using the MotorSport Ranch track was a huge success. I, again, want to extend a big thank you to Lanean, the sponsors, the national staff and all the many, many volunteers that helped make the event possible. I will not even attempt to name all the names for fear of forgetting someone who genuinely deserves recognition. Sixty-five club racers registered for the event. They ranged in class from Mark Lopilato's super fast Sprint and Enduro winning GT1R to Joe McGlohen's slightly slower, but no less steady Mustard Racing “J” car. The ten rookie candidates were all successful in earning their rookie licenses. Nine of the ten were Mavericks. Congratulations to them all. There were a couple of instances of contact, (to quote Keith Olcha, “ask me how I know”) but on the whole it was safe, fun, and very competitive racing. In addition to the racers, there were also 55 people registered for the Driver's Ed. Based on many of the comments I overheard, we can count on some of those drivers moving into the club racer ranks in the future. The weather started out on the damp side, but got progressively better as the weekend unfolded. As the track dried, the times continued to come down. The really fast guys were in the 1:15 range. For someone like me, who was happy to break into the 1:25's, this seems like flying. Even with the great shirts, good food, and outstanding homemade ice cream, the event managed to turn a healthy profit for our club. Again, this is a real tribute to Lanean and all the people involved with making the weekend such a huge success. No doubt, it will be hard to top this next year; but, I'm confident that the Mavericks will make it even bigger and better in 2006. Hope to see you there!

Maverick Minutes by Marie Wingfield (subbing for Michael) ocky Johnson hosted the June 2005 Maverick Region Board Meeting on Monday, June 6, 2005. The meeting had the following 16 members in attendance Executive Council: Rocky Johnson, Mark Gluck; Board Members: Dennis Chamberlain, Mike Brodigan, Bill Dawson, Lanean Hughes, Chuck Machala, Joe McGlohen, Andy Miller, Joel Nannis, Wendy Shoffit; General Membership: Ed and Tracey Gross, Kevin Hardison, Jan Mayo, Marie Wingfield. Rocky Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:05pm. Co-Goodie Storekeepers and Social Chairs: Rocky announced that over a couple of banana splits Ed and Tracey Gross agreed to take over the positions of Goodie Store and Social Chairs. Jan and Wendy will help with the transition. As the new storekeepers, Ed and Tracey would like to put the Goodie items on the internet for others to view and order through a link to Paypal. Club Race: Lanean Hughes – The Club Race is over and was very successful. The Club Race was held in conjunction with a Driver’s Education over Memorial Weekend (May 28-30) at MotorSport Ranch (MSR). Her report showed a profit of ~$8,700. The lunch charity laps brought in an additional $350. Lanean said Maverick Region was able to make such a profit because “a lot happened” with the hotel, food, and track rental. For example, Jack (MSR Owner) gave more than normal and removed a lot of the fees. Lanean has received several e-mails from Club Racers indicating they had a good time, despite the rain on Saturday. Nine of the ten Club Race Rookies were from Maverick Region. Lanean read the Club Race Steward’s Report. The Steward indicated MSR was new to Club Racing, and was a good choice and a great facility – a Steward’s dream, if one doesn’t mind climbing a ladder to get into the Tower. Driver’s Education: Bill Dawson – During the DE portion of the Memorial Weekend event, there was metal to metal contact. This is a first for Maverick Region at a DE. Both cars were drivable and no one was injured. The Hill Country Region DE is coming up on June 25-26. Team leads will be contacting Maverick instructors. AX/TT (Radios): Chuck Machala – There are problems with the Motorola radios. Ray Luedecke tried to use them at the Club Race, but they failed. The Region needs to buy new ones.Although AX/TT generally uses 10 radios, Chuck would like funds allocated to buy 12 radios (2 backup radios). He would like to buy ICOM brand radios. Joe McGlohen expressed concern about switching to ICOM radios. First, if the current radios are replaced with newer Maxon radios, the same battery packs and chargers can be used. Secondly, Lone Star Region uses ICOM and has had problems with a 2-3 second delay after the talk button is pressed – cause of the delay is unknown. Regardless as to which brand is ultimately chosen, Joe did not want his concerns to delay the allocation of funds during the current meeting. AX/TT has made ~$6700 this year and Chuck wants to spend $2000 on new radios (~$152/radio). Wendy made a motion to allocate up to $3000 for new radios and new batteries. Lanean seconded the motion. The motion carried. However, prior to funds being spent, Rocky requested all issues and concerns are resolved. There was discussion about selling the Motorola radios on the internet or through the Goodie Store. Of the old radios, the Region will keep 4 radios and sell 6. Pricing and venue will be determined later. AX/TT (Mineral Wells): Chuck Machala– Currently, Gregg Lee (S2000 club) has been using a donated street sweeper to clear the AX/TT course. He has asked the Region (in conjunction with other clubs who use the sweeper at Mineral Wells) to help with the operational expenses of the sweeper (fuel, tires, and maintenance). Gregg has asked the Region pay ~30% of the $650 yearly cost (~$200/yr). There was dis-

R

cussion regarding if the Region should pay only if the other clubs pay or regardless of what the other clubs do. The decision was to pay our portion regardless of what the other clubs do. Joe McGlohen made the motion as such. Wendy seconded the motion. The motion carried. Hope Shelter: Lanean Hughes – Hope Shelter received a $1000 donation from a member who visited the shelter, and an additional $350 from the charity laps at the May Club Race/DE. Although the foundation was finished this week, the shelter is about 1.5 months behind schedule due to weather, modifications to the building plans, and the busy schedules of Wade Kolody, Bill Middleton, and Justin Hiegel. All three have put a lot of time, energy, and expertise into the building of the new shelter. However, the shelter is in need of a new architect and construction engineers. Wade Kolody was the architect in charge of the plans. Wade and family are moving to Ohio. Bill and Justin are the construction engineers and are no longer able to spend as much time on the shelter due to other commitments. A request for assistance from an architect and construction engineers will go out to the membership. Habitat for the Humanity has been contacted for assistance, but cannot assist at this time. Joe McGlohen made a motion to give $7500 to Hope Shelter. Jan Mayo commented that the Region just gave the shelter $10,000 from Parade profits. Wendy Shoffit commented that Jay Walker donated his $400 Club Race Early Bird Special to the shelter. The Club Race held a drawing and the name drawn won a refund of their entry fee. Jay won the drawing and rather than take the refund, donated the funds to Hope. The motion was never seconded or voted on. Slipstream Advertising: Mike Brodigan – Statements will be mailed to the advertisers in early August. Advertisers with accounts past due will not be offered a renewal. The rates will stay the same. Mike would like to include a direct link from the Maverick Region website to the advertiser’s website for a fair and reasonable fee. It was suggested he talk with Steve Boyd and the web master for Hill Country Region. Photo Rally: Wendy Shoffit – The advertisement in the June SS shows the incorrect date. The published date is June 18, but the actual date is July 23. There is another Photo Rally August 13. Spring Tour: Andy Miller – The Spring Tour had 25 cars. The cars were divided into two groups – novice and experienced. Dividing the cars into these groups worked well. The next trip is in the Fall. A request went out for someone to write an article on the event. Mark Gluck agreed to write the article. Happy Hour: Dennis Chamberlain – HH at Hunan Dynasty was successful with 38 attendees. The next HH is at Mondo’s on June 16. Slipstream Publication: Wendy Shoffit – There was a problem last month getting the membership database to the mailhouse. This delay resulted in the late mailing of the SS. The issue is being addressed so the SS will arrive in a more timely fashion. Father’s Day Picnic: Wendy Shoffit – approximately 10 people have RSVP’ed. This year, the picnic is on Saturday not Sunday. She is expecting late RSVP’s. Joel Nannis will handle concours prizes. Wendy made a motion to spend up to $300 for meat/drinks. Attendees will supply side dishes. Joe seconded the motion. The motion carried. President: Rocky wanted to hold an Executive Meeting at 5:30 prior to the open Board Meeting, but no one showed up [The Secretary is currently working on a project in Indianapolis]. The meeting was to discuss the By Laws. Changes to the By Laws, as defined in Article 12, Section 1, require two-thirds vote of a quorum. A quorum is defined by Article 6, Section 2, or Article 10, Section 4. Next Board Meeting: Tuesday, July 5, at the home of Lanean Hughes. The June meeting adjourned at 8:27pm.

Happy Hour at The Hunan Dynasty by Dennis Chamberlain Thursday, May 19, 2005

his was our first happy hour at Hunan’s and luckily for us, they had just obtained their liquor license the previous week! For the most part, the happy hour Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Monda Degan and Mike Lockas committee tries to select places with reasonable prices, and in this regard Hunan’s was one of the best ever. We also had great service, which is often a challenge for a group our size. We also had great food and a great view. Obviously, I really liked Hunan’s.

New members included Jennifer Dean and Mark Ovard, Judy Kellnek, Gisselle Miranda (attending for the second time but her first happy hour as a member) and Steve Lipkin. Jennifer and Mark are the proud owners of four (yes, that is four) 928’s. One is kept mainly for spare parts. Mark is a wedding photographer, when not performing impersonations of Neil Diamond. See what you think from his photo. For our July 21 happy hour we’re heading back to the Railhead Smokehouse in Colleyville, another of our favorite hangouts. Hope to see you there!

Passion and Performance by Mike Holloway, Slipstream Managing Editor orsche owners typically have a unique outlook on life. Often, they are people who demonstrate both performance and passion, achieving high levels of excellence through their unique outlook, internal motivation, life experiences and personal philosophy. Slipstream’s Passion and Performance segment highlights these people.

P

Typically, this segment is dedicated to folks who actually own a Porsche and drive it from time to time. This month’s person of interest owns a Porsche (sort of) and pretends to drive it. If given the chance, he would gladly drive his 911 but his feet can’t reach the peddles to break or accelerate. But it is not for a lack of trying, he just hasn’t grown legs long enough yet. Meet my 6 year old son Maxwell Holloway.

DAD: Ya, that is a nice one. She looks to pretty close to mint condition. You think we should go take a closer look? MAX: (With saucer size eyes) Can we? What kind is it Dad? Is it fast like ours? Do he race it? Come on Dad! Stop talking and lets go see it!!! We walked over to the 356. Max peered inside and I instructed him not to touch it, only to look. He went around back and examined the engine. MAX: Dad, his engine looks new! Did he get a new engine? Did you get a new engine? (screaming over to Mr. Cross). Dad, this car looks new. How old is it anyway? DAD: It’s over 40 years old lil buddy. It has won prizes for being so nice. Look at the awards. (Mr. Cross approached us and told Max that he could sit in it if he would like. Max was a little skittish and looked at me for approval.)

Upfront and Personal with a Concours!

Every parent believes his or her kid has exceptional skills and is blessed beyond compare. We are no different with our children for the most part. In our eyes they are the brightest stars in the sky. Truth be known, they are just average kids who we get a good laugh from, shed a tear for and completely enjoy. I will say this for Max (and even his little sister Emma), they really like our old 911 Targa and would prefer we drive it whenever possible. Max has every intention of racing it some day. And I am sure his little sister will want to do the same (just by judging how she operates her tricycle!). Recently we attended the Fathers Day Picnic at the Casey's where Max was taken aback by all the Porsches. Even more so when he heard there was a contest for the “nicest” one. The following is a conversation Max and I had. He may just become a Concours judge someday. MAX: Daddy, look at all the Porsches! There all different. Why they all different? DAD: Well lil buddy, it depends on what year they were made and some are just different models but all are made by Porsche. MAX: Dad, which one do you like the bestest? I like the orange one, no the black, no the red one way over there (Pointing to the Cross 356 - a very beautiful car indeed!).

We then examined all the other cars. He had a tough time deciding which one he liked the most. When we finished, Max wanted to sit in our car. He wouldn’t leave so instead of forcing the issue, I let him be. We have learned that when Max has strong feelings over something it is normally warranted. I found out what he was up to. He happened to notice that Joel Nannas was judging the Casual Concours. Max had a lobby and he wasn’t going to let Joel get away without pleading his case as to why ‘his’ Porsche should win.

DAD: It’s OK, you can sit in it just don’t touch any buttons or levers. This is a Concours car, that means the owner has taken really good care of it and only brings it out for special times. Now when you get out, close the door using the door handle. (Best to teach him early on the proper way to close a Concours door).

Max Lobbying for ‘His’ 911

Now mind you, our car was by far the roughest one on the lot. We have great plans for it but in reality it had no business being next to those beauties! It came time to pass out the prizes. I could tell Max was nervous. It came down to the last prize and Joel called out my name. I was awarded a can of glass cleaner. It could have been a million dollars to Max. He now knew which car was his favorite, his 1977 911 Targa. He mentions it everyday sense. Thanks Joel for letting Max believe he had the nicest car that day.

Mineral Wells Time Trial #2 & #3 By Major Jeff Herrmann & Tannia Dobbins t was a dark and stormy night... at least it started that way the night before a double header Time Trial at Mineral Ring 14-15 May. Despite mixed weather forecasts, 27 drivers prepared for the worst arriving early to slide on a water soaked course. Fortunately, the rain stopped, the sun peeked and I am here to report on a high adventure Time Trial. Tannia and I were allowed to author this article based on a long-standing tradition that the newest drivers submit a summary. At least that is what Wendy Shoffit told us.

actually eat the infamous cheese cake. Unfortunately, he decided to toss us a curve and order the tiramisu instead…but much to his surprise none was to be found that day. Rocky just had to settle for something with a lot of chocolate. It must have been good because those that had passed up dessert were now back tracking! Mike Lockas must have a deal with Nancy as he was treated to the mystery meal of the day. Nancy had promised a delightful dish and it must have hit the mark since there was little left on Mike’s plate when the dishes were cleared. Charlie Davis provided the entertainment with his professional quality photos of cars as well as bugs and cacti; beautiful quality work that most would only see in photo magazines. Other entertainment included determining exactly how much salad dressing a girl could put in her hair. Thanks go to Jasmine Shoffit for her apt demonstration. Thus we ended the night in anticipation of doing it all over again, just backwards, the next day. The 15 May Time Trial was a reverse "Flat Out" with a kink. The kink, a chicane in corner two, must have been destructive to tires; there were a number casualties of the day. James Shoffit wore out his tires ending his day. Brian Petri also managed to find a good view of the cords in some of his tires and ended up a bystander for the last set of events in the afternoon. More catastrophic was Bob Kuykendall's de-rubberizing of his tire while on course. All were fine after a short full course red and a push back to the grid. This event, Shelly Burbank driving “Christine,” had some close friendly competition with Lisa Steele in her 944 Turbo. However, Shelly prevailed collecting the day's Fastest Time of Day (Ladies) for her efforts with a 85.000. Shelly’s car control is nothing less than impressive. Class 6 was once again the largest and more tightly matched class. The top times were within 1 second from first to third place. This time the 944 of Mark Steele, with an 81.038, pulled the fastest time over the infamous Chuck Machala, Chief Driving Instructor.

The course on Saturday was 2b version 4.7. While that does little to represent the course I submit the name as "Flat Out." At least that is how Richard Diller advised us to drive through the kinks. While most were not so brave, it seems Richard heeded his own advice as he recorded the fastest time of the day with an 80.089. The course was fast with only a few cones finding themselves not in their original position having been assisted by an errant fender. There were a few hard fought battles to be the class winner. One of the closest was the Class 10 (914) contest between Kevin Hardison and Brian Petri. While Kevin ultimately won, the difference was a scant 1.1 seconds. The other close battle was actually for 2nd and 3rd place in the OA class. The weapon of choice was not a momentum car but more of a point and shoot car. The winner was Reb Burroughs in his ‘Vette’ but the action was between Michael Busby and Rich Evans. That Mustang battle was overflowing with great American Muscle Car sounds. The biggest Porsche class was class 6 with a covey of Boxsters with car number 911 entered to keep the Boxsters honest. Despite the large number, they all finished within 5 seconds of each other. Just a handful of the ladies made it out to enjoy in the fun including Wendy Shoffit, Robyn Howard, Shelly Burbank and Susanna Kavanaugh. The top time of the day in the ladies class was an 84.500 and went to Shelly sporting her newly revitalized purple 911. The Saturday Time Trial was also given an English flavor with the arrival of Randall Grasso's Lotus Elise. What a nimble car she looks to be. When all were exhausted from shagging errant cones and driving our cars like they were meant to be driven, we assembled at Baris, a great Italian restaurant. Some of us wanted to see if the region's president, Rocky Johnson (Car 619), would order and

Caption I would like to take this opportunity to thank the driving instructors for showing the way and giving those tips that really make a difference to the more novice drivers. Instead of being able to check their tire pressures or rubbing out a body panel that somehow made contact with a cone, they hop into another car and put their welfare into someone else's hands. All appreciate it I am sure.

Club Race Corner - Impressions from the Lefthand Seat By Colin Graidage here is a very good view of MotorSport Ranch (MSR) from Buzzards Neck. As it rotated in front of me, there was time to reflect that I had just failed to realize a major objective for my first club race. It was lap 8 and I was just hanging on. James Shoffit was ahead and exiting the turn. I turned in and in very rapid succession there was the apex curb, but I was aimed inside it, there the control tower, there the clubhouse, there the flag station with the yellow coming out; thank you. Back down the short straight, I saw Mike in the black 944 Turbo. He had seen the flag and me and had room. Gracefully backwards, off the track again. Nice sky. I think I heard the voice of Carey Spreen saying, “Don’t do that” and, “Both feet in” from my first excursion in my first DE in February 2002. It was the same corner. Poetic, really. A wave from the corner station and back onto the track. Keep the mud off the line, listen to it shaking off the wheels, try not to spin the car with too much throttle, and into the hot pit for a quick check by Joel and our great National scrutineer team. Thanks guys, and off again. Not even breathing hard. Not the first time, after all. Well yes, actually, in a for-real PCA Club race. Then it started to rain. The next few laps were ugly with cars slipping and sliding on and off the track. Richochet was extremely difficult, the uphill turn into the Tombstone complex, and Big Bend was treacherous. Some like to drive MSR in the rain, or so they say. The rain stopped, some grip came back and the game was on again. By the end of the race, the track was dry and there were some good battles going on especially into Rattlesnake and out of Big Bend. Rattlesnake was the “Who blinks first” spot and the exit from Big Bend rewarded the best technique. Track out at Tombstone got closer and closer. Too close for some. The weekend started on Friday, after all, with a test and tune day. My rebuilt engine had zero hours on it after a mishap at TWS and so a first few tentative laps were required to bed in the new rings and see if our work was as good as we thought it to be. We had good oil pressure, good temperature, it sounded good, felt good and there were no oil leaks. Wonderful. By Friday evening and the orientation session for license candidates, the engine had a little over an hour on it and felt ready. Was I? Alan Friedman, National Official and Chief Steward for the weekend took the orientation session and handed out a helpful set of “dos and don’ts” to a group of ten, would-be racers. His message was this, “Racing is different. Club Racing is a National program. It is not a Maverick event, even though Maverick is hosting it. It is not DE multiplied by a factor. Racing is different.” He stressed awareness, keeping track of other drivers, where they want to go, and where you need to be. Speeds are higher, space is tighter, cars are closer, drivers have intentions that may be less than generous, lines are often different and frequently less than optimum. There is limited time to think about driving the car. The driving part needs to become automatic and the thinking part has to be on strategy and tactics. It sounded good. Alan talked about the benefits of occasionally backing out of situations and co-existing on the racetrack. That seemed sensible enough. Two of my co-aspirants, James Shoffit and Mark Steele were nodding in agreement. In my mind’s eye, I could see them both out at

T

Mineral Wells from my autocross days. Yes, backing out would be right at the front of their minds. Why were these guys nodding? Saturday morning practice, and rain. It poured for hours. We were fortunate and soon after lunch, the rain stopped and the sky cleared. The track dried and we were off again. Practice starts and a fun race were planned and our red group was called to grid. Now, I have to admit that starting in the middle of the pack is interesting. Get lined up, look past the cars in front, try to spot the green flag dropping, listen for the roar, get on the gas and go. Into Big Bend, two abreast, flat in third, look forward, backwards, and sideways. I was on the inside and the only place there were no cars was on my left. There is grass there and I remember a past instructor saying, “The grass is your friend.” Well, not today, Jose. Into Big Bend, stay tight to the apex curb, accelerate hard into the back straight, stay aware, and breathe. Mayhem, cars everywhere and now fourth, and now Rattlesnake approaching at high speed. Who is to my right? Don’t they know we can’t go through here three wide? Stay on it and see who blinks. I have an exit if I need it, straight on, remember the grass. Now two wide, someone backed out and round we go, two wide and I have the outside at the entry and the inside at the top of the hill. We are through and now one wide for the rest of Rattlesnake and up through Wagon Wheel?. Not too wide here or some smart soul will be up on the inside, over the crest and flat into Ricochet. On towards Little Bend and there, a corner worker with a yellow flag. On the brakes and form up to do it all again. Probably time to breathe again, smile, pat the dash and think of the past weeks building this engine with friends. Great times and a great job. The order for the next practice start had changed. Bill Miller, #76, was in front of me and we were on the outside, a red 944 on Bill’s inside. The flag dropped and we were off again. Flat into the turn. Suddenly the red car on Bill’s inside was sliding sideways and we had a situation. Bill saw him and exited right. Three wheels on the mud, two rears and a front. I was ready to go off but Bill caught it, calmly stayed with it and came back onto the track. Great vision and car control, just another ho-hum moment. Covered me with a light coating of mud and that, for those of you who know the story, is why the car needed to be washed, and we were off down the back straight. Most of those behind us never even lifted. Well done, Bill. Breathe again. The third practice start was without incident and we ran ten laps as a fun race. During the fun race, I saw a different side of the great job our corner workers do for the club. I have always appreciated these men and women for the job they do for the DE program. We rely on them, teach students the flags, stress the importance of observation, ask the question, “What flag was being waved?” and at DE speeds and in DE traffic it is vitally important. At racing speeds and in racing traffic I saw that it is more than vitally important. Thanks to all of you who look after us. Alan Friedman was watching from the tower and so a clean race and a clean finish was high on the list of priorities. Fortune smiled, there was the checker and it was done. Alan was right, racing is different. Sadly, back came the rain. The blue group practice starts and fun race went back to Sunday morning. The conversation at dinner with my wife Rosemary, daughter Georgie, and future son-in-law James was racing. Strange.

Sunday morning saw practice, qualifying for the sprint race, and a drivers’ meeting. Alan handed out the pieces of paper we had come for and the candidates were officially licensed PCA Club Racers all welcomed noisily by the group. Okay, there is a cross on the back of the car, but who cares? Ms. Shire will be proud. So would my mother, but I daren’t tell her. I qualified too well and that put me in among the quick people. For the future, that is not a good plan and a lower qualifying position will do just fine. These guys are fierce and the fun aspect of it seemed less obvious. The start was tricky and I thought I would have to test the grass as I was driven onto the red and white apex curb on the inside of Big Bend. It is nice up there but soon we were through and off and the first few laps were fast and furious. And so to Monday, and a great day for racing. Practice, qualify in a better, if lower place. And to the grid where Jan Mayo, Bob Benson, he of the patriotic suspenders, and Graham Lane have everything under control except my breathing. Dick Dobson, Chief Scruitineer, and John Poor walk around the grid looking at the cars. Dick asks me if I am ready. I am. Bill Dawson is in the pace car and looking for Jan’s sign. She signals, “start engines.” Bob starts to send the lead cars out and we are underway. Now, the Enduro is one hour with a mandatory five minutes pit stop. I have never driven for one hour before and I wonder how this is going to work. Can I concentrate for that length of time at these speeds? Will the cool shirt work for that length of time or will it become a heater? Will the car last? Will

Caption it rain? Did I remember to visit the restroom? Was Steve Kent right, am I too old for this? One lap and Bill Dawson in the pace car exits the track. The lead car takes us around and we form up two abreast through Tombstone. I am on the inside down the straight, look for the flag, listen for the roar, floor it and let’s race. The track was dry and the sun even tried to shine through. The racing was intense. At one point Doug Molny lost some oil and Eric Erz spun on it in Rattlesnake. I got sideways on it as did many others and that after slowing down for the debris flag. It took a lap to get the oil off the tires and a new line through Rattlesnake for a lap or two helped. I needed to pace myself, not for the car’s sake but for my own. Just ease off a little and stay focused. Noby and I were to share a pit wall place and I was to go in at 30 minutes, he at 40. Keith Olcha graciously agreed to check my tires, provide something to drink, and time my stop. The pit lane

speed is 30 mph, which seemed very slow and five minutes seemed an eternity. All done and we were off again. Now, I have to admit to having little idea of my position in the race and the pit stop just added confusion. Best to just drive and let ESPN worry about who was where. There is a time for pacing oneself and a time to get on it again so for the last fifteen minutes or so I picked up the pace and enjoyed some good racing with a number of cars. Just don’t try too hard. Time passed and I began to think a checker flag would be good. Three laps after that thought came to me there it was and we were done. It is hard to describe the feeling. Relief? Yes, I suppose. Elation? Some, maybe. Wonder at how much faster than me many of these F cars are? Yes, but that’s ok for now. Certainly, gratitude for the organization that lets us do this and the individuals who make it possible. Drivers waved to each other and to the corner workers through the cool down lap and there were those nice people at the pit wall again. Thank you, thank you. Back to the staging area for decompression and something to drink, some “did you see this?” and “what about that?” What a day. Started fourteenth finished thirteenth. The important word there is “finished”. Does that car look happy to you? It certainly does to me. Now, those of you who know me, know I am not from around here. That said, Rosemary and I count it a privilege to live and work in the United States and consider Texas home and Maverick our region. To celebrate Memorial Day with you all was therefore a privilege and to remember those who keep us free and have given their lives for that freedom is an important and honorable thing to do. We get to live, sleep and race in a free country that is only free because as someone said, “There are rough men willing to do violence on our behalf.” It is right to remember and honor them. We also owe great thanks to PCA’s National Organization, Alan Friedman and his team. Our own Lanean Hughes, the great arranger and putter to work of the willing. Thanks to our registrar, Ray Luedecke; the tech team: Dick Dobson, John Poor, and Tom Snodgrass, the scoring team: Chuck Perilli, Nadeen Saville, Michael Wingfield, and Bob Glowacki; the grid team: Bob Benson, Jan Mayo, and Graham Lane; the hospitality team: Annette Snodgrass, Clara Lewis, and Wendy Shoffit. Thanks to the Linda Bambina, the voice over the loudspeaker, the volunteer coordinator, Tracey Gross, Joe McGlohen and his entire crew of corner workers, to all who worked in whatever capacity, to good friends and safe racers and to those who love them. Thanks also to our generous sponsors. On a personal note, thanks to all the DE instructors who have helped me over the years. So was the experience what I expected? What do you think? Oh yes, I was really happy that the car won the award for Best Prepared Race Car. Apparently, it was cleaner than some. Thanks to the scrutineers for the award. In fact, thanks to all for a great weekend and if I have not mentioned your name, please forgive me.

May at Mayos Recap by Jean Frick e know of many eating establishments that can charge an outrageous price for a meal because of their “atmosphere”. On Saturday night, May 7, the Maverick club met at one of the most famous “car atmosphere” restaurants in the area. All scrubbed up and clean, with cars on the rack in the background, stacks of tires in the corner, even the rich smell of motor oil in the air. What else could a car enthusiast ask for? I know, 30 Porsches in the parking lot, with every model represented. From a trio of 356s to a Cayman (I lied about that - try a new 996). Photo by Matt Platts

With plenty of cold drinks available, and a spread of that famous Babe’s Chicken, all that was lacking was the entertainment. After all had their fill of chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, salad, and dessert, we broke out the video projector and presented the History of the PCA. Starting in 1955 with only 7 regions, the film took us to the current time with 140

Of special note were the numbers of new faces in the crowd, as well as some we don’t see often enough. One example was a table-mate Khalid Zafar and his wife Sherry. Although having been Maverick members for 5 years, this was their first Maverick event. We don’t think it will be their last. Our thanks to all who helped make this a great time to relax with friends, share a drink, break bread, and just have a wonderful evening. Special thanks to Ed for the effort in turning his shop into the best car atmosphere restaurant in the Metroplex
