The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, Maverick Region President as well. Maybe you have a spouse, friend, partner, or whatever, who doesn't care about driving. That doesn't mean they might not enjoy some other aspect of the club.

have owned sports cars all my life, but I never really participated in any organized events until I joined the Maverick Region of the Porsches Club of America. When I first started to attend socials, autocrosses, time-trials and Drivers’ Education events, I was impressed with the organization's well-oiled time schedules and the "goodies" such as coffee, donuts, tee-shirts, etc.

I

Give it a try; you might be surprised how rewarding it can be.

... the

Maverick Region really did have something special going for it. ...

As I began to attend events organized by other PCA regions and other marques, the differences became even more apparent. It became more and more evident that the Maverick Region really did have something special going for it. Now, with benefit of hindsight, and a better understanding of how things really work, it is obvious that we have a great core of volunteers and a wonderful group of generous sponsors. So many of the things the casual participants take for granted are the result of a dedicated bunch of people who not only love Porsches, but are more than willing to give their time and talents (and lots of it) to support the club. Also, no small amount of time and effort goes into nurturing the relationships with our sponsors. Our sponsors support us in so many ways: with their advertising in Slipstream, cash, discounts, merchandise, space in their facilities for meetings, tech inspections and more. They truly provide the club with the opportunity to conduct events that are second to none. For all this good stuff to continue, we need our members to do three things: 1) support the sponsors, 2) thank the volunteers, and 3) get involved yourself. No doubt, the most effective way to support our sponsors is by spending your hard earned money with them; but that's not the only way. Just stop by and say thanks; make sure they know we truly appreciate their help. Refer business to them. If you've been around awhile, people will ask your opinion. Be sure to acknowledge the people who plan and execute our many social and driving events. I know they make it look easy, but believe me, it's not. Everyone likes to be told they are doing a good job. However, I believe, you will find most of our people are pretty thick-skinned. If you have suggestions or constructive criticism, let them know what's on your mind. Or better yet, offer to help! That’s the third thing we need to have happen. It is always healthy for any organizations to have an influx of new people and new ideas. Yes, it can be a lot of work, but it can be a lot of fun,

Photo Curtesy of Drew Campbell

Frankly, I didn't give it a lot of thought. I just enjoyed the events and thought that's how everyone must do it. Only later did I start to appreciate the tremendous amount of work and coordination that makes all these events appear to be on autopilot and run so effortlessly.

Maverick Minutes by Michael Wingfield ark Place Porsche hosted the February 2005 Maverick Region Board meeting on February 7, 2005. Thank you to Randall Johnson and the entire Park Place Porsche staff for allowing the Maverick Region to hold the Board Meeting at their showroom.

P

The February meeting had the following 13 members in attendance: Executive Council: Rocky Johnson, Mark Gluck, Jeff Atkins, and Michael Wingfield; Board Members: Lanean Hughes, Bill Miller, Chuck Machala, Wendy Shoffit, Joe McGlohen, Dennis Chamberlain, Joel Nannis, Matt Platts, and Bill Dawson. Rocky Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM and began the “round table” discussion. Lanean Hughes: PCA 50th Anniversary Goodie Store items are now available on the PCA web site. PCA is promoting two Treffen tours to Germany, with info on the PCA web site. Hope Shelter construction documents are in process, with $37,000 collected of the estimated $180,000-$200,000 rebuilding cost. However, much of the total cost will include donated time and materials. MR will host a PCA Club Race at MSR over Memorial Day weekend in May, and still needs volunteers. All race profits will go to Hope Shelter. MR needs to submit candidates for the Parade ’05 National Awards. Ted Kelly from Oklahoma is the new Zone 5 Rep. Wendy Shoffit: AX101 school accepted 26 applications, is sold out and has a waiting list. The Ladies’ AX school has room for entrants and needs more volunteers. AX102 will accept 32 applications making it sold out with a waiting list. TT103 will accept 26 applications and has room for 2 more. Each event needs more volunteer workers who will receive a FREE lunch for helping (Who said there was no free lunch?). Requests more articles from the membership for Slipstream. Slipstream article submission deadline is the 15th of the month prior to publication.

The Passing of a Friend The Porsche club lost a fine man - Bob Ande. He was 64 and is survived by his sister, Judy Masotti of 2114 Bellcrest Ct. Royal Palm Beach Fl 33411. Bob drove a 1975 911 S called Jellybean. He had returned to the Maverick Region from Massachusetts were he had spent 6 years before retiring. He is now autocrossing and DE’ing in the sky. Our sympathy goes out to his sister and her husband, Lou and all the rest of his friends who will miss him.

Joe McGlohen: Ordered AX radios and expects delivery tomorrow. Located a Pelican plastic case to store the 12 AX radios. Of the original $800 expense approval, has spent $485 and can get a $15 rebate on each pair of radios ordered. Some DE radios need service with one bad radio and three bad batteries. Makes a motion requesting $600 to replace the failed DE radio components. Motion seconded and carried unanimously. SCCA will hold a corner worker school (Crash & Burn) at Texas World Speedway. Makes motion for $250 to help support the school. Motion seconded and carried. MR will rent the DE radios and flags to the BMWCCA for use at the BMW DE at MSR, with a rental fee of $350 for the weekend. Mark Gluck: Event insurance needs listed and ready to submit. AX waiver forms given to Wendy and DE waiver forms given to Michael. Suggests investigating an automatic email program to notify members of selected events. Will discuss with Steve Boyd to see if the web site can host subscriptions. Dennis Chamberlain: Has the event ads ready to go for the next issue of Slipstream. Posters for the Happy Hour (HH) events cost about $5.50 each, and will begin submitting receipts to the club to cover those costs. SeaGrill will host the next Happy Hour on 2/17. The HH turnout at Saltgrass was low due to conflict with the new ’05 Boxster party held at Boardwalk Porsche. Continues to send email notices of upcoming HH events to new members (members less than six months). Unfortunately, folks are “walking checks” at the HH events. December HH had three folks walk dinner checks. The earlier D&B HH had 26 RSVP attendees, but 51 people showed up. The walked checks totaled $250. Reminds the membership that each HH attendee is responsible for own check! Michael Wingfield: February DE at MSR sold out and has a waiting list. The application for the May DE held in conjunction with the Club Race will appear on the MR website and Slipstream shortly. Registration opens immediately for the May DE. Jeff Atkins: Has received more information from Bob Knight (who stopped by briefly before the meeting) and is ready to close the Bank of America account. Joel Nannis: National Membership list still has problems delivering membership information to the regions. Bill Dawson: February MSR DE hosted by Ruf Auto Centre will have Mr. Alois Ruf in attendance. Rocky Johnson: Park Place Porsche will sponsor the April 3 AX held at Texas Motor Speedway. Would like to see some form of DE awards to join the AX/TT awards presented at Founder’s Day. The February meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.

Future Board Meetings Rocky Johnson will host the March Board meeting at his home on Monday, March 7, 2005. Fifth Gear in Lewisville will host the April Board meeting, and Boardwalk Porsche in Plano will host the May Board meeting.

ur timing for the January 20 Happy Hour wasn’t the best, since Boardwalk Porsche was having its unveiling party for the 2005 Boxster the same night. However, ourturnout was twenty-eight, which under the circumstances, was respectable enough.

Passion and Performance

P

Dave was born in Palmerston North, 2 hours north of New Zealand's capital city, Wellington. Most people think the NZ capital is Auckland! Dave’s folks owned a working produce farm, growing lettuce, cabbage, celery, cauliflower and other green leaf type crops for the local supermarkets and green grocers. Pretty tough work 24/7 as they didn't employ any additional labor - it was a real "family" business with four sons and daughter pitching in after school and on weekends. With all those veggies and hard work, it’s no wonder he became Mr. New Zealand! MH: Dave, whats your life’s philosophy and passion? DW: Well, I have a pretty simple philosophy regarding work and life; I'm passionate about both because I enjoy what I do, whether it's working out in the gym or working for my company. My job is an Asia/Pacific marketing manager for an industrial lubricants company. I look after 8 countries: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Then there’s the Porsche. MH: That’s a heck of a car. Can you tell me about it? DW: It’s a 1998 Model 996, a 3.4 liter engine, 6 speed manual gearbox, exhaust factory "TUBI" system, factory fitted "Aero Kit" hence the coffee table like rear wing, 18" wheels with very wide 285 tires, a black exterior with "Havana" leather trim. I tell you, My most overwhelming impression of Porsche is not the speed but the engineering. I think Porsche is the finest example of engineering available in a production automobile. Everything about a Porsche fits, runs and feels fantastic. MH: Powerful car for a powerful guy?

996 Six Speed - Powerful Car for a Powerful Guy! DW: It doesn’t happen over night. MH: How much is work and how much is genetics and how much is hard work? Could anyone get huge? DW: You have to start with the basic building blocks, like what Porsche does - a strong frame, hearty engine, perfectly engineered. Then you have to perfect it. That’s what the engineers at Porsche are all about. That is what I do in my workouts and my diet. I don’t believe in taking the easy road. Hard work is its own reward. MH: Do you use steroids? (Don’t hit me!) DW: Ha! Nope, never have. First off they are pretty bad for you and secondly I am more of a stock guy. No modifications here, just what the factory installed. MH: How did you get started in bodybuilding? DW: When I was at university I injured my knee playing basketball. During recovery, my physio set a program which included weight sessions to strengthen ligaments and muscle tissue around my knees. After the rehab program finished I continued to go to the gym and spent less time on the basketball court. During a gym visit I met NABBA NZ president Jim Pitt who got me interested in competing. The rest is history.

orsche owners typically have a unique outlook on life. Often, they are people who demonstrate both performance and passion, achieving high levels of excellence through their unique outlook, internal motivation, life experiences, and personal philosophy. The Porsche Club of America has been a great place to meet new and interesting people. Slipstream’s Passion and Performance segment offers a chance to do just that. Please meet 2004 Mr. New Zealand Dave Wong.

DW: I’m not sure. I may temper it down some. My wife gave birth to our first, a boy. I want to spend time with them but continue to stay in shape. I think I will need all my strength to keep up with him. MH: The little guy will wear you out! Good Luck! Here are a few of Daves acomplishments: 1st Place in the Masters 2003 NABBA NZ Nationals, 4th Place in the Open Men's World 2003 NABBA Pro-Am, 1st Place in the Masters 2002 NABBA Manawatu Regional. What I Learned at the Rolex 24 by John Sandusky hat’s it like to race for 24 hours? That’s a good question. A more telling question, though, is: What’s it like to crew for a 24 hour race? Drivers only drive for part of the race, and sleep/rest when they’re out of the car. Crew members are on duty for the whole 24 hours.

W

• Don’t complain when Super Unleaded hits $1.99 a gallon at the local mega-station. Sunoco race gas there was $4.50 a gallon. I can’t tell you how many times I made the trip with twin 55-gallon drums and signed (for the team) for a bill of $500 or more.

This adventure started back in October, when my brother, Pat, and I decided to attend the Rolex 24 at Daytona, scheduled for Feb 5-6. We booked our flights, did our trip planning, and were all set to go. Then, in November, The Racer’s Group announced they were expanding their team for the 2005 event, from 3 cars to 8:

• Think OJT. You’d better bring with you some experience doing races or you could get yourself into trouble. Jim found out he would be refueling cars during the race only when he got there. He then had to figure out how to do it and what the rules were.

Jim Buckley - Mid-race Refueling • Refueling a car is harder than it looks. I refueled the cars during practice and in the garages with a 5-gallon jug with a dry-break fitting on it. Jim used an overhead refueling rig during the race with twin dry-break fittings. It takes some effort to keep the fitting connected to the fuel tank to keep the fuel going for the required 45 seconds.

John standing with 5 of the TRG team cars, Saturday morning

• It takes me maybe 30 minutes to change the brake pads on my car. It would probably take the crew about 3 minutes to change the pads on the race car during the race. So what do they do? They take a whole assembly – new pads, new brake rotor, new 6 piston brake caliper – as a unit, and put that on the car when it needs a pad change. The caliper has a quick disconnect fitting for the brake line.

I contacted Kevin Buckler, knowing he was a guy who got started in PCA racing, to see if they needed any crew help for the race. They did and one thing led to another. Both my brother and I were on as crew members. Fellow Maverick member, Jim Buckley, also signed on to help crew for the team, as well. There were 5 crew teams. There was one team for each DP car, and then 3 GT teams each covering a pair of cars (65/16, 62/63, 61/64). I got assigned to the 65 and 16 cars as the over-the-wall fire bottle operator (for the race). My brother was the fuel shag for the same cars. Jim Buckley got assigned as the fueler for the 62 and 63 cars.

The brake line and caliper have fresh fluid. Unbolt the old caliper, yank it off, put the new one on, bolt it on and attach the line. No bleeding is necessary. It took about 60 seconds. Why is that important? No, not

• It’s a lot of work. You work before practice, during practice, after practice. You haul equipment, tires, fuel, spares…everything up to the pits. Then you haul it back. And repeat. And hurry, too. • It takes a lot of people. We were understaffed for the teams and everyone did multiple jobs. You need to plan to be flexible, and get the job done when needed. You might only see 6-8 people when a car comes in, but there are at least that many on the crew working behind the scenes. We could have used a lot more. • Organization and communications are vital and play a big role in the outcome of the race.

It certainly was an adventure, and to recap it here would take more pages than our editor would allow. But I can give you a feel for it…. These are the things I learned at the Rolex 24:

The brake rotor/caliper/pad assembly – done!

because we’re gaining vital track position. It’s because we did this at the 15 hour mark in the race – 3 AM. The less time we spent working on the car meant we could go back to napping that much longer until the next pit stop an hour later.

• Golf car keys are like gold. • Need new tires? Tires lasted one stint on the track and were replaced. During the race, they were replaced every pit stop. Hoosier brought like 12,000 tires to the event. And they probably used them all. The team had 6 sets of brand new out-of-the-box, blue anodized Fikse wheels for each car. • The Maverick Region knows hospitality. • And the biggest? The #61 car, the 2002 model, was the highest finishing car of the 8 entered, finishing 12th overall and 3rd in GT.

What a race! What a weekend! What an experience! It was a memorable event and a lot of fun, that’s for sure.

When is the race in 2006, anyway?

• Don’t ever touch the brake parts when they come off the car. One experienced crew guy “forgot” and picked up the rotor after the change (at 3 AM) with just regular gloves on and burned his hand quite nicely. He had ice on it for 2 hours. • Speaking of napping, you need more chairs than you think. The few chairs that were there were constantly taken by spectators or friends, and the crew was left standing a lot of times, including eating. You could find a tire to sit on once in a while. It didn’t get a whole lot better in the wee hours of the morning, either. When you’re that tired, you can nap when the cars are roaring by. And you can wake up in a snap when it’s time to go.

• It gets cold at Daytona at night. Dress accordingly. • The view from pit lane is pretty awesome. • Don’t plan on seeing much of the rest of the race. You see the cars from one end of pit lane to the other. The teams do, though, have televisions in the pits covering the timing system and the feeds from SpeedTV and The Weather Channel. So, you know what’s going on. • Hot “marbles” from race tires not only stick to other tires, they also bond themselves to your shoes while you’re moving and working on pit lane. There are still lumps on my shoes. • Bring your safety equipment. It’s your safety you’re looking after. See, Joe McGlohen? I did remember all those things you’ve told me over the years. And I thank you for doing so.

Ladies AX School

We started our class roughly about 8:30 a.m. in what felt like freezing temperatures. I was part of the second group of cars that would begin the morning exercises learning slaloms. From what I knew walking the courses with my husband in past events, I figured that this would be the most challenging for me. I kept running in my mind how I felt like I was going to die whenever I rode with Jeremy. I always thought that the car would flip over or something dramatic like that. He always assured me that it would never happen. But I’m cynic, and I had my worries.

by Jordyn Lessenberry Mazda 3: First Autocross Racing Day in the Life of a Grocery-Getter y husband, Jeremy, and I have been married for three months, and for as long as I have known him, he’s been an avid autocross racer. I have been to all of his races, watching him get some good runs, and obviously some bad ones as well. But through it all, he has never pressured me to take a class or become a racer like him. Before he came along, I already wanted to race – drag race, that is. I never even heard of autocross racing until I met Jeremy. Even though I felt like I was in a jerky roller-coaster ride when I was a passenger during one of his runs, nevertheless, I was suckered in immediately. Of course, since I started to show my interest in autocross, he has never stopped asking if I wanted to compete sometime during the season. I always gave him the same response, “I want to take the class first.”

M

. . . Men will naturally think that we could never beat their times . . . My professor for the day was Wendy Shoffit, who I learned later held the Top Ladies title of the Maverick Region of the PCA, so Jeremy and I knew that I was in good hands. As Wendy took control of my car during the first runs of the slaloms, I kept wondering how she made it seem so easy. When it was my turn to try them, I just ran all of Wendy’s advice in my head over and over again. My first time wasn’t bad. It wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t bad. As I continued to work Lava in and out of the cones, I became more confident, more knowing of what I was actually doing.

Of course, like everything else, you’ll have your very bad moments. I clipped some cones here and there. But worse of all, during one of my runs through the decreasing slalom, I lost control of my car, my hands were all over the place, and I actually ran over and carried a cone. Yes, I did it! I figured I had to do it once, and today is better then any. Honestly, I think I was the only one who did that the entire day.

This past Saturday, February 19, I took my first Ladies Only Autocross 101 Class with the Porsche Club of America at Pennington Field in Bedford. I have to admit, I was very intimidated and nervous when we first drove up in the parking lot. Not that there were a lot of ladies taking the class, but because I didn’t drive up in a Porsche. My baby is a 2004 lava orange Mazda 3 hatchback. Not even a year old, and the car has already seen its share of rides back and forth to Jeremy’s hometown in Little Rock. But, this will be the first time it will be tested to see if it’s got any potential of racing. Almost instantly, “Lava,” as my husband and I have non-creatively named it, became the odd man out. I wasn’t too upset about it. After all, it is bigger than the Porsches that were there that morning. Regardless, I kept my nerves in check and reminded myself,“this is not a competition - it’s just a class,” and either I’ll totally like, or I’ll absolutely hate it. Either way, I was about to find out…

Robyn Howard dialing in the skidpad with Mike Lockas’ help. After that episode, I told Wendy that I’m two types of people in situations like this. One, I’m a perfectionist – I have to keep doing something over and over again till I am content with myself. Two, whenever I get myself in a predicament, like eating up cone, I will become overly cautious after that. And I was. I started to drive slowly again until I gained enough confidence to accelerate a little bit. As I got better at the slaloms, I started to realize that this exercise was my favorite so far, which was a surprise to Wendy because she stated that most people can’t stand this part of a course. That single reason alone may become an advantage to me later. Our second set of exercises included practicing threshold breaking and the skid pads. I didn’t mind so much the breaking exercises. That was actually cool for me since I always wanted to drag race. Although the length of the run was shorter than a quarter mile drag strip, it still felt good

to put the pedal to the metal. I don’t get to do any of this out in the real world, so it’s refreshing to know that I “have” to do it now. We did that activity for about 30 minutes or so.

Next up – the skip pads! Yup, I already knew earlier that morning that this would be my biggest fear. It didn’t help that everyone kept talking about spinning out and that we wouldn’t stop until we all did it. I was envisioning in my mind flipping over again. Sure enough, going around in circles over and over again was pretty scary, not to mention sickening to my stomach. In the middle of the one hour exercise, I had to ask Wendy if we could stop awhile just so that I could catch my breath. As soon as I stepped out of the car, I felt like I was about to hurl. I never felt more girly that day than at that very moment. But surprisingly enough, I didn’t blow chunks, and I recovered pretty quickly. I pulled myself together and requested to Wendy that I try again.

Tracey Gross executing a perfect stop at the Threshold Braking exercise. I was upset with myself that I couldn’t complete the exercise with contentment. We had enough time to do a couple more runs. Those times around, I felt better, and it helped that in the back of my mind I knew that I didn’t want to fail at this, especially since Wendy had told me earlier that this exercise was the easiest and most fun for everyone else. After everyone had completed their runs, we were given about 30 more minutes to continue practicing the other exercises if we wanted to. I automatically told Wendy I just HAD to do the slaloms again. Earlier that morning when we had first started driving through the slaloms, I noticed that there was a man at the end of the cones who kept putting his arms up, about two to three feet apart, as if to tell me “touchdown.” Wendy later explained to me that he was actually telling all of us how far apart we were from the cones. Knowing that and realizing that as I got better with the exercise, his arms got closer and closer. It felt good that I improved each time. After we broke for lunch, we all gathered back together for the afternoon exercises – learning to walk, work, and actually run the course. I was really psyched about it! I am so glad that the PCA was organized

enough to have drawings of the course. I don’t know about everyone else, but having a photo of the course on paper and walking it at the same time really made me see the bigger picture and helped me focus more on what’s ahead as opposed to what’s right in front of me. We were allotted 12 runs on Saturday. Like anything else, you start out bad, get really good, and have your random ups and downs in between and throughout. Wendy never failed to remind me that I shouldn’t compare my car to others. I knew what she meant – not all cars are the same, especially if you compare my Mazda 3 with a Porsche Boxster – but it never hurts to try to reach their times. And I had my first moment of bliss when I ran a 52.593! It felt good considering we all started out with the same experience and some of the Porsches were running about the same time or just a second faster. Not bad for a “family-grocery-getting” box car that was by first impression named “The Station Wagon.” I had so much fun that day, and I have yet to find one person who I have not expressed my love for the race. I know a lot of ladies, including my own friends and co-workers who either just don’t see the point in it or don’t see themselves as racers. But, you know what, even if they do this for one day, I guarantee that if they do not choose on their own to compete this year, that at the very least they will have fun. Men will naturally think that we could never beat their times. Just knowing that should be reason enough to see if we can. Just know this - every woman out there has a “testosterone-driven urge” inside of them that is just waiting to get out. Autocross racing is just one of the many ways we can combine our gracefulness and mean streak together. Besides, what better way to show up some of the guys, get your aggression out from the stress and weary of every day work and family life, and at the same time get your “a*$-kicking-adrenaline-pumping-girl-power-spirit” out, and maybe win some runs here and there?! I can’t imagine a better day than that!
