The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, Maverick Region President

The voting was conducted by the PCA Club Race National Committee. Additionally, Noby also earned honors as the Rookie of the Race and Best Prepared Car at our own club race last July. Many of you know that Noby and I frequently share a room on road trips, so I would like to say that I taught him everything he knows. I would like to say that - but it would be a bold faced lie! You should know that Noby, modest as he is, attempted to bribe me not to write this article, but I really wanted to let everyone know. We're proud of you, Noby!

T

his month I'd like to open with big, hardy congratulations to Noby Takahashi. At the Lone Star Region PCA club race, at Texas World Speedway in March, Noby received the Michael Melton Memorial Rookie of the Year Award. This honor was presented by John Crosby, the National PCA Club Racing Chairman. According to John, there was a potential pool of approximately 125 rookie club racers that could have been eligible for this award.

Rocky trying to recruit new members - will take milk money for dues! students. I had the opportunity to talk about racing a Porsche. As you can imagine, the attention span of a five year old is about the same as a guy my age, so it was a perfect match. I took assorted, related paraphernalia such as a helmet, racing suit, nomex underwear, gloves, shoes, cool shirt, etc., for the classroom presentation. Then I let everyone come out, buckle in and "drive" the car. Needless to say it was a big hit, especially with the guys. Although, in all fairness, there were several of the young ladies who seemed pretty excited, as well. It was a fun morning and I left secure in the knowledge that I had done my part to help plant the seeds for the future growth of the Maverick Region.

On a totally different note, this falls into the "start 'um young" category. Many of you have met, or certainly have heard me brag on my granddaughter, Riley Anna Bryan. (If you haven't, just give me a call; it will only take a minute for me to set up the slide show). At any rate, Riley Anna's pre-kindergarten school has a weekly program called CHEP (Children's Enrichment Program).

Maverick Minutes by Michael Wingfield

R

ocky Johnson called the meeting to order at 7:23 PM, and began the ‘round table discussion.

Bill Miller: No TT information to report yet, but will report AX for Chuck Machala. AX #1 had 86 cars with 6 runs per entry. The new radios did not work well with surrounding car and wind noise. Tried using headsets, but the headsets did not eliminate the problems. Unfortunately it has been too long since the purchase to return or ask for a refund. Thus, we have six pair of radios at ~$70/pair that do not work as desired. Likewise, two units have damaged battery connections. Rocky asks if we call sell the radios to the membership, suggesting someone can use the radios personally, for example, on a Maverick Tour. Bill makes the motion to sell the radios at $45/pair to the membership. Joel seconds, and the motion passes. Bill poses the question, given the 86 entrants and three run groups at AX #1, should we limit the number of entrants to ensure more runs per entrant? Some entrants were not happy with only 6 runs and the worker rotation delays associated with a three-group rotation. Rocky suggests starting the event earlier in the day to allow more time for more runs. Jan suggests that no policy get set based on this one event. The AX committee will monitor future attendance and runs, without entrant limits. Bill (using his best Joe impersonation) also mentions that some AX flags are “used up,” frayed and torn and need replacing. The flags do not need replacing immediately but will in the near future. And of course we now need AX radios. (Spoken just like Joe) Wendy Shoffit: AX #1 brought in $2,300 with Park Place Porsche (PPP) sponsorship covering the cost to rent the TMS facilities. Lanean adds that PPP provided $2,000 in sponsorship for the TMS AX. Randall Johnson from PPP was very happy with the event. PPP also provided long sleeve Polo shirts to entrants and the shirts were a big hit. TT #1 & AX #2 scheduled for 4/23 & 4/24 respectively. The position of “Social Chair” remains vacant, but Wendy and Jan will serve as interim chairs to help setup the Father’s Day, Founder’s Day, and Holiday Party events. The Evite application does not function as desired to track event RSVPs, and will not be pursued. Hope Shelter received 64 boxes of Girl Scout cookies as part of the Girl Scout cookie drive. Jan Mayo: Attended the SCCA Fire & Rescue (Crash & Burn) school supported by MR. Eight of the 39 attendees from MR. Felt that the event had poor attendance since the date was the day before Easter, which may have kept some folks away. Joe, who also attended the school, notes that the SCCA recognized MR for attendance as well as sponsorship. Lanean Hughes: Hope Shelter building permits done. Next step is to purchase $10,000-$15,000 of building materials. Hope has a $150,000 loan in place if needed. Local dealerships may provide additional funds for the shelter. Club Race next month at MSR still needs volunteers, and volunteers should sign up on the MR web site. Currently, the Club Race has 15 applications, but none from local Mavericks. Club Race “Special” will refund entry fee to one lucky drawing winner from one of the first 35 applications received. Have received $8,000 sponsorship from Boardwalk Porsche for the May Club Race. MR has not kept up the region Scrapbook for the past two years. The region needs a volunteer to take on the duties of maintaining the scrapbook. Next year, a scrapbook will not be necessary for applying for the National award of Region of the Year. Robyn Howard: Wants to know what type of Goodies to order for the Goodie Store and needs money to order the Goodies. Rocky suggests getting some 50th Anniversary items from PCA and suggests promoting a “Group Buy” to help support the region. Other suggestions include helmet bags and pajama pants. Wendy moves to allocate the Goodie Store $1,000 to buy inventory. Joel seconds, and the motion carries. Mark Gluck: Event insurance in place for the May TT & AX, Tour, Club Race and DE. Michael Wingfield: Have received approximately 30 applications for the DE held in conjunction with the May Club Race. We will accept about 55 entrants, so we still have room. 8

Mike Brodigan: Continuing talks with Kevin Hardison about expanding Slipstream. Bill Dawson: February MSR DE was a big success even if we did set a new record for the number of spins in one weekend. (Do you think the cold and rain had any effect?) Darren Shaffer: Suggests sending a “Thank you” to ’04 Parade attendees as for attending and include a Hope Shelter status and solicit for more funds to support the Hope Shelter building project. Jan interjects that Parade attendees already donated $4,000 to Hope Shelter via a donation box. Wendy suggests printing a donation slip in Slipstream along with an article on the building status. Joel Nannis: We have 1,174 members. Dennis Chamberlain: 26 folks attended the last HH. Fair attendance considering the date conflicted with the Boardwalk Porsche presentation party of the new Boxster. Next HH will be at the Bavarian Grill in Plano on May 21. Requests more lead time in developing event ads for Slipstream. Jeff Atkins: Quarterly finance statement will be available at the next meeting. Rocky Johnson: Forms for submitting National award nominees for Parade ’05 in hand. Jan suggests that MR submit Wendy as a candidate for the Enthusiast of the Year, and Jan will complete the form. Jan mentions that the Family of the Year award nominees may now include families without children. Rocky suggest that MR submit Jan & Ed Mayo as candidates for the Family of the Year. Wendy will complete the form. MR contacted by other car clubs to participate or co-host events. For example, the Italian Car Club would like MR participation in their Italian Car Fest Weekend to be held at TMS. Entry is $150 per day. Event information will appear on the MRPCA egroups board at Yahoo. Likewise, the Subaru club is holding a rally and invites MR to participate. The Jaguar Club wants to use MR timing equipment for one of their events, and will donate $500 to Hope Shelter for the use. MR volunteers will need to participate in the event to operate the timing equipment. Another request invites MR to hold an event at the Air Museum at Love Field. Perhaps Dennis can work out a HH that includes a visit to the museum. Boardwalk Porsche in Plano will host the May Board meeting, Rocky will host the June meeting, and Lanean will host the July meeting. The April meeting adjourned at 9:12 PM.

Las Colinas Photo Rally Postponed! Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, the photo rally that was scheduled to be held on March 26th had to be postponed. We’re hoping that the weather will be nicer on July 23rd. Please mark your calendars to participate in this extremely fun event. Typically, Porsche Club events get scarcer as the temperature rises during the summer months. You won’t find many driving events at this time. This event promises to be interesting and fun. At the end, we’ll even stop for ice cream! For those of you who don’t know what a photo rally is, it’s basically a scavenger hunt. The objective is to find objects shown in a bunch of photos and answer a question about it or something very nearby (behind it, next to it, etc.). You’ll need a keen eye as some items will be a little harder than others to find. You’ll get to know the Las Colinas area really well while having fun with your friends. Hope to see you on July 23rd! Teri and Charlie Davis and I have worked hard to plan a good event for you

e had a moderate but festive crowd for our first happy hour at Cantina Laredo. New attendees included Mike Sliva (1983 911 SC), who has been a member for some time but was attending his first function, and Phil Childrey (2002 911 Targa), who had just joined the club two weeks earlier. We also had two visitors and potential members. Johnny Wallace is a Porsche owner and a friend of Clarence Wyatt’s, along with Gisselle Miranda, who has been a 1987 Targa owner for some time. Gisselle explained that she found out about PCA activities in general from a friend in Los Angeles and more about our club from searching the Internet.

Passion and Performance by Mike Holloway, Slipstream Managing Editor

P

orsche owners typically have a unique outlook on life. Often, they are people who demonstrate both performance and passion, achieving high levels of excellence through their unique outlook, internal motivation, life experiences and personal philosophy. Slipstream’s Passion and Performance segment highlights these people. Please meet Enoch Dorman. Enoch Dorman was born in Schleswig Germany in 1935. His family soon moved to Belgium and then to Hungry where Enoch took up the family tradition of Blacksmith when he was merely 10 years old. Enoch and his 8 brothers and sisters were home schooled by there father, who was a Lutheran minister and Blacksmith and his mother, who was a pianist and a pastry chef. At the age of 15, Enoch had mastered 8 languages and showed great promise in mathematics and ballroom dance but stayed his course as a Blacksmith. Soon the Blacksmith trade became obsolete and Enoch began working for a small tool and die shop as a machinist and lathe operator. In 1954, with hands the size of baseball mitts and a heart to match, he married then famous Spanish fan dancer Katrina Maria Montanez (who was 4 years his senior) and began his own family. Enoch (known as Knocky) and Katrina (known as Kat Kat) had nine children: six boys and three girls. They lived in the south of Spain until 1963. In 1963, the Dorman’s moved to Stuttgart Germany where Knocky began working for Porsche as a machinist. He quickly impressed his supervisors and rose through the ranks. Soon Knocky found his way into the mechanical design team where he focused his efforts on the various fastening systems – namely bolts and screws. MH: Knocky, you have been designing fasteners (screws) for Porsche for over forty years. Was there ever a time when you thought that Porsche would outsource and you would be without a job? ED: You must understand, the screw, it is very important to Porsche car. It is what keeps the car going. The driver thinks the engine and gears and wheels keep the Porsche car going, no it is the screw. Porsche Car recognize the importance and would never have anyone else design their screws. They would never let anyone make other important items. Without true good screw, the Porsche car is nothing more than Volkswagen or Audi! MH: You really have a passion for what you do. ED: I am passionate about the screw, it is my destiny. I knew before I work for Porsche car that I would someday work on something meaningful. It was always something I wanted. I have been able to raise my children because of it. I owe my life to the screw and Porsche car and my children are also because of it. MH: What would you say is you biggest challenge today? ED: Glue. Many companies glue. I hate glue. It is made from dead horses and goats. Have you ever smelled a dead goat? Is that something that is worthy for Porsche car? No, it is not. I want to take all glue and bury it with the rest of the dead horses and dead goats. MH: Well, I never thought of it like that. Then how do you feel about welding? ED: Welding is fine for chassis and much other things in Porsche car. There is things you can not weld. Things that must be screwed. MH: Rivets? Gotta love the rivet. 10

ED: That is lazy man way. American car companies rivet. That is why they are no good. No good screw in American Car. MH: And the Japanese cars? ED: Please young man, you are just being silly boy now. They use clips! (Enoch erupts into a feverish laugh that is contagious. We laughed for many minutes over the thought of this and other things.) MH: Oh, what was I thinking? Anyway, what was your biggest challenge? ED: If you think screw is a challenge, it is difficult; if you think screw is easy it is easy. It is all how you look at it. It is all in your head then it moves to your hands. Then you make it. It is easy. MH: You are are a bit of a philosopher. You told me that you have a Porsche. Which model? ED: We have 1965 911 Coupe, a 1989 928 that is Kat Kat’s baby and 2003 Boxster which my grandchildren fight over. I drive the Coupe everyday. It is not as quiet as the Boxster but … MH: ..it has better screws? ED: Your funny boy! The Coupe was built by my friends and me. I saw that car when it was just heaps of metal and watched while it was given soul. I helped build it. We used certain materials and adjusted and put things into the car that we knew was needed to make it a great car. Sometimes we would change design if we needed to make the car better - even during middle of production run. Our souls went into those cars, they still do. Why do you think they win so many races and have such a following of owners? The Porsche car is unlike any other car. It sweats and sings and dances. It has a soul. MH: You are seventy years old. Are you going to retire anytime soon? ED: I have now done my share, I should leave the screws to the younger men to trouble over. I will wish to retire this year. I shall spend time dancing and less time toiling over such matters. Kat Kat and me will spend our days in Miami with a daughter and her family and in Dallas with sons and their family and fly back to Germany and Spain to visit other children and grandchildren. It is now time to rest and enjoy life. To dance and to drive and to finally not worry about the screw. MH: Good luck Knocky and I will never look at a Porsche screw the same again!

A Windy Start to Autocross By Lauren Dunn

The bus lot proved to be a fickle opponent for me and most of the folks I spoke with, as we wound up running 7-10 pounds less air than we were accustomed to – at least after fighting our cars during the morning session. I scored my first DNF of the season as I trundled the wrong direction through Ricochet (leaving any number of corner workers and spotters scratching their heads). But, I redeemed myself in the afternoon, grabbing fastest Miata of the day honors by three seconds. Sadly, that wasn’t enough to hold off those pesky Subarus and Mitsubishi Evolutions to claim a win in OJ. Lauren Dunn taking top Miata honors.

I

t may just be me, but every Maverick Region event I’ve attended has been Wendy… err, windy. This sunny Texas spring day was no exception, as it seemed Wendy was everywhere doing just about everything. There was no shortage of wind as mother nature blew us around at 20 mph. I always find myself pleasantly surprised by something when I sneak in to a Porsche Club event, and free shirts definitely make for a nice surprise! Thanks, Park Place Porsche!

I’ve started off this season getting a lot of adrenaline rushes during autocross – something I missed last year. Exiting Ricochet through the offset gates into Box Corral got the adrenaline pumping on every run – and I’ve got the cone rash on my right rear fender to prove it!

My thanks (and I’m sure the same goes for all of us nonPorsche owners) for allowing me to be your guest once again! You guys put on great events with challenging and exciting course designs that ensure that Maverick Region events aren’t just another autocross.

And speaking of Wendy… In other autocross clubs, we’d probably be poking the stick at her to run in the “open” class, but I’m guessing James might discourage that! Keep showing the guys how it’s done!

Club Race Corner By Doug Molny

O

ur season opener at Texas World Speedway (TWS) proved to be another exciting challenge for the Maverick group. The club race was hosted by the Lone Star Region. Many of us were plagued with mechanical gremlins, including myself. As frustrating as this can be, we are very lucky to have so many people quick to pitch in and help. The particular problem I had involved my clutch pedal. I was shifting from third to fourth heading down the front straight and the pedal stuck to the floor! This was on Friday, the first day of practice. I immediately pulled over to the inside wall in front of the grid, I gave them the flat tow hand signal and waited for the session to end. I was towed in and believed that the event was over for me. I was ready to head home. My dismay turned into absolute excitement when Jim Buckley insisted this was fixable. The engine and transmission needed to be pulled. I had to find a clutch, though, and all the parts that are necessary to complete the repair. I thought this was near impossible to do at the track, but within 60 minutes I had a donated clutch and every other part required. It took 7 hours and the help of many other racers, who worked until 7:30 PM that evening. I arrived at the track Saturday morning at 7:00 AM to find every one of those guys there finishing the repair. By mid-morning my Porsche was ready again. I was tremendously grateful for the help I received and thrilled to participate in the Sprint races later that morning. This was truly a humbling experience! Permit me a moment of racer’s pride. I finished 2nd in class in both sprint races, and 16th and 15th, respectively, over all out of about 37 cars. Unfortunately, I had an oil line break during the enduro. Yes, they threw the meatball flag at me and I took a DNF. In true racer’s retrospect…even with the clutch failure it was worth every minute!

Please stay tuned as this is the first of many articles we have planned for this column. These articles will come from a different club racer each publication. We will cover the club races attended by our Mavericks, technical articles, race preparation, and racing tips. I hope that you enjoy this special new section of Slipstream. Sprint Race 2: GTC 3

Enduro: GTC3rl

Just a side note: Jim Buckley set the track record for the weekend in the GTC3 class driving a 2005 996 Supercup car with a smokin’ 1:45.726. That is an average speed of over 98 mph on that track. Imagine turn 13-14-15 at that speed!

The Photo is Worth a 1,000 Words or Perhaps a 1,000 Pieces! 16

If your race was omitted or you were not mentioned it was my mistake and I take full responsibility. The green run group did not have a podium finish in the enduro. I listed only Mavericks who finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the sprints and the enduros. For all club race results, go to mylaps.com or the PCA National web site.

Halftime for My Carrera Part II by Ed Hughes who has a pretty good internet following, re-programmed it to optimize it to the headers I put on last year as well as our 93 octane fuel. I can’t wait to see if I feel a difference.

A

s I wrote about last time, I dropped the 120K mile motor out of my ’84 Carrera for a clutch and other miscellaneous maintenance. This was my first time taking the motor out of a 911, and it went pretty well, with no “surprises.”

As I write this, the motor is all together and ready to go back in. To complete the clutch job, I cleaned up the throw out fork shaft, and put in a new clutch cable. I also repacked my CV joints, installed a new sound pad in the engine compartment, and replaced my rear brake lines as well as new plugs and plug wires.

The first few tasks were cleaning, cleaning, cleaning and a then more cleaning. There were many years and miles of crud to get off before I was about to do any mechanical work. I worked up a pretty good system that made the ordeal not too painful. Home Depot and Lowes sell drop cloths that are very similar to a diaper. They have plastic on the outside and absorbent material on the inside. I would place a sheet of this under the motor and then spray Gunk TM (liberally and often!) on to the areas I was working on. I’d then scrub with a nylon brush and rinse with a squirt bottle filled with water. The liquids were contained in the drop cloth, which I changed as it became saturated. If I were taking the motor apart, cleaning would have been simpler, but this worked OK.

Once up on the engine stand, I was ready to begin. I must say the ’84 motor with its heater motor and ducting, the air box and the A/C isn’t exactly a beautiful sight when it is in the car, but once you get these items off, the motor starts to look like it mean business. So, after taking these items off, as well as the sheet metal and plug wires off of the motor, I was getting to where I could start my work.

Before - Waiting for Some Love

Since my A/C has been non-operational the last 3 summers, I’m removing it to clean up the engine compartment. To help round this out, I also put on a new cone filter intake to replace the stock air box, and a heater duct “backdate” to replace the large blower motor and duct assembly. This really cleans the motor up, and I love the way it looks. Next weekend is the installation and the chance to check out how my project has come out. It’s been a lot of fun, and very straight forward. I must say that the Porsche 911 motor is pretty straight forward, and not too complicated to work on. For a non-mechanic such as myself, I’ve been able to figure everything out, and if it all goes back in well, and I have no problems, it will have been a gratifying experience.

I then commenced my mechanical work, which included a new clutch, flywheel and pressure plate as well as miscellaneous new seals for the senders as well as the engine mounted cooler. While the motor was out, I decided it was a good time to rebuild my starter and alternator. The alternator bearing had a slight click when I spun it, so it was good timing. For a grand total of $125 for the two, I think this is cheap insurance considering the convenience. I also adjusted the valves, which could not have been simpler. This is a job that is not too awfully complicated in the car, but it requires a little contortion. Out of the car, it’s a breeze. While the alternator was off, I cleaned up the fan and shroud and painted both. I maybe should have powder coated them, but paint is cheap, and I’ll see how they hold up. I also sent my aftermarket chip off for reprogramming. The guy I bought it from, 22
