Drifting: Thanks to our Volunteers! By John Hamilton, Region President

C

an you believe it’s November already? What a year we’ve had! Many, many activities (including a few firsts, like the Club Race/DE at Circuit Of The Americas last spring), with several more to come. This month includes another Drivers’ Education event, Time Trial, Autocross, Sunday Drive, Lunches and Happy Hour -- oops, Maverick Monthly Social -- plus our annual Founders’ Day event. And we squeeze all of those in around Thanksgiving! When do we rest? Speaking of not resting, I’d like to commend our incredible list of volunteers who have put together another stellar year of events that provide the additional enjoyment from being a member of the Maverick Region. That list is long, and most of them are pictured on page 4 of this publication each month. THIS MONTH: DON’T JUST BREEZE BY PAGE 4 - PAUSE THERE FOR A MOMENT and appreciate the time and effort that these people put into it FOR FREE over the year. That includes a 2-1/2 hour board meeting most months, which most of them attend. So when you attend one or more of the events, drives, tours, etc. that all seem to go off so smoothly, or read this magazine, say “Thank you” to the volunteers who get it all done behind the scenes. There aren’t many (if any) paid people who could do as good a job. THANK YOU MAVERICK VOLUNTEERS!

Mav of the Month Another volunteer who has done a tremendous amount of work for our club is our Secretary, Renee Farinella. Renee was just like many of you: enjoying club events and wondering where she could contribute. So she started at-

ALEXIS A. V. CAMPBELL, Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 tending our monthly board meetings and quickly discovered that there was going to be an opening in the secretary position. Renee immediately volunteered and won a landslide election to the position. Each month, laptop in hand, Renee not only captures the meat of the happenings at the meeting; she also contributes outstanding ideas on how we can continue to improve our club. One of those improvements that Renee suggested is the new name for our monthly get-togethers (formerly “Happy Hours”) which will now be called “Maverick Monthly Socials.” So Renee, as a heartfelt indication of our appreciation, you are our “Mav of the Month” for November, and so much more than that every month to our club. Congratulations and enjoy your gift certificate to the Silver Fox Steakhouse in Grapevine!

Carey On... By Carey Spreen, Managing Editor With the arrival of November, even though we still have more activities coming up before 2013 is out, we look back at the past year at our annual Founders’ Day banquet. This year’s Founders’ Day, scheduled for November 2, has probably already taken place by the time you read this. In contrast to last year’s extravaganza celebrating Maverick Region’s 50th Anniversary, I expect that this year’s Founders’ Day will be a return to the more typical evening of member recognitions, Board elections, and annual awards, including our prestigious Richard Selcer Memorial Award. Oh, yeah,

and a chance to dress up and have a nice dinner among friends old and new. I hope that you were able to make it, and if not, I hope you’ll consider attending next year.

Drives. There are two more of those coming up: one to Fort Richardson State Park in November, and a Toy Run for our perennial charity, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House.

But as I mentioned, there are still more events to come before the year-end holidays arrive. There is one more Drivers’ Ed event this year -- the popular one-day event at MotorSport Ranch, For those who don’t or can’t commit to the normal two-day events, this one is an attractive alternative.

You may also like our social events, and of course we will continue those no matter what time of year it is. Note that we have renamed our Happy Hour get-togethers to “Maverick Monthly Socials” so as to widen the focus and let folks know that we are not just getting together for drinks -- there is always a group that stays for dinner.

There re three more Time Trials left, so if you have wondered about what either type of event are about, you can still come out to Mineral Wells to check them out and avoid the heat that the MineralRing is sometimes known for. Perhaps you prefer our Sunday

And don’t forget about our Holiday Party on Saturday, December 14 at the home of Linda and Lee Wilkins. See the ad in this issue or visit mav.pca.org for more details. Read on!

Maverick Minutes: October Board Meeting By Renee Farinella, Region Secretary

R

egion President John Hamilton began the meeting promptly at 7:03pm with a discussion of considering the “rebranding” of the name of our monthly Happy Hours to include sharing the additional information that dinner is always an option, and often a part of our gatherings. In addition to adult beverages being available at these Maverick monthly socials, we meet, greet, and eat! Be on the lookout for some updates. “Come for drinks, stay for dinner!”… not just happy hour! Welcome Gary Pearson, 2008 Cayman owner and PCA member for 18 months, who sat in on our board meeting. All PCA Members are welcome, and your first visit meal is on us! We hope your time with us inspires an interest in even greater club involvement. National Membership Chair Lisa Steele is helping to work on a proposal to have all dealerships offer a free membership to PCA with purchase of car. We’ve been working on this one for a while. Slipstream Editor and former Rally Chair Carey Spreen was not at the meeting, but asked John to give his report. Don Sebert and George Luxbacher attended an SCCA Rallymaster class a couple of weeks ago. With Don’s continued interest in becoming our Rally chair, Carey will help train and get him well-situated into that role. Don brings many years of experience as a Porsche owner and member of PCA. Our Membership Co-Chairs Susan and Tom Froehlich were not able to attend this month’s board meeting either, but asked John to report 6 November

that in September, we lost eight members to non-renewal, which we are working on addressing in specific ways moving forward. More to follow on these developments! Since Social Chair Tracy Robertson was not able to attend, John gave the Social report as well. As of this writing, about 35 people had signed up for the Cars and Cattle event, which will have taken place on Saturday, October 5. Also, Raffle tickets to win a one-year lease of a 2014 Macan, the new Porsche small SUV, are available for purchase through our website mav.pca.org. You can also purchase them through board members at all remaining events, right up until the day of the Raffle drawing, January 25, which will take place at the All Member Party. John recently learned that the rules state that Raffle ticket sales must be to PCA members only, contrary to what we had understood up to this point. A clarification from John will be forthcoming soon. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit noted that she will have a display and Raffle tickets available for sale at the Club Race and solo-only DE at Eagles Canyon later in October. We are working hard at finding more items for the silent auction portion of the Founders’ Day event, benefiting the Hope Shelter. We then moved on to officially voting on (and passing) a measure stating that we will next year have 11 monthly board meetings per year; not convening in July. John then talked about an email he received from a member who owns Sports Car Junkies, requesting that we facilitate interest in his offering to PCA Member business owners who might benefit from being included on his podcast,

October 2, 2013 which incorporates business into folks’ love of Porsche. We will forward this on to our Tech chair, Ed Mullenix. Also, John shared another email request from Car Guy Concourso; it was determined that we would ask our Concours chair Andy Kay to attend one of his events to check it out and see if it aligns as an opportunity that would be of interest to our Membership! Consider yourself officially volunteered, Andy! Next up was Region Vice President Gareth Maurice, who purchased the new Corel Draw graphics software for use with generating ads and graphics for Slipstream. Gareth is working with Carey Spreen and our former graphic artist Christy Payne to incorporate the design package to full use. Also, he mentioned that we are current on our insurance for Cars and Cattle, as well as the Sunday Drive to the San Martiño winery. David Robertson came to the meeting with Raffle tickets available to distribute to the board for sale. Region Treasurer Jim Falgout was glad to report that we are in healthy financial shape. We were all proud to hear that he recently acquired a 2003 996 with only 26,000 miles on it, and now has a 968 for sale! We feel sure it will not be for sale for long. Frank Briggs, former Concours Co-Chair, sat in for our Happy Hour/Maverick Monthly Social chair, Mike Farrar, and let us know that the November 21 Happy Hour has moved from Cristina’s to Uncle Julio’s in Grapevine. Please always check the most current on-line calendar at mav.pca.org for best information. Visiting observer and Region Past President Mike Brodigan chimed in, though he

was just observing this evening, mentioning that he would like to resurrect a former tradition of the December Happy Hour: hosting it at the Bavarian Grill in Plano! Stay tuned for that affirmation! Tourmeister team Co-Chair Brendan Eagan started his report by saying that everyone is excited about being invited again by the Ramos family for another Sunday Drive on October 13 out to their San Martiño Winery near Rockwall. Region Tourmeister John Harvey and his team have a fun route mapped for the Drive before we lunch there and tour the facility. Also, he reminded us that the Fort Richardson Sunday Drive, northwest of Fort Worth, is November 17, and the Frick’n Toy Run, hosted by Jean and David Frick, is December 8. As always, the events Calendar is available on the club website, as well as listed in each month’s Slipstream. Please keep Autocross and Time Trial chair Travis Howard’s wife Robyn in your thoughts as she recovers from neck surgery. The Time Trial/Autocross weekend at the end of September at Mineral Wells went great, despite a little bit of rain on Saturday, but Sunday was a beautiful day. There were also two brand new JPP (Junior Participation Program) Autocross-

Destination Restoration: Another Steal of a Deal By Ash Seidl-Staley

W

ell, I guess the easiest way to start this article is with”Oops, I did it again.” No, this is not a shoutout to Britney Spears, but instead is a declaration of how I have purchased another Porsche. I’m sure my water-cooled bashing statements from the last few articles come to mind. But the truth of the matter is that I needed a car that was a little more practical, easier to work on than the 944, and, of course, fun to drive. Drum roll please . . . My new ride is a 1974 914 2.0!! Thanks to my Uncle’s keen and watchful eye, I basically stole a stock 914 for a heck of a price. I have never been happier, because for the past few months

I have woken up each morning eagerly awaiting my commute to and from work. If you haven’t driven one of these tiny cars, I must recommend it; they truly are a blast to drive. The low-profile, lightweight, and elegantly-styled body cruises down the road with ease; always turning heads. The powerful 2.0L engine, at its mid section, thrusts the car like a space age rocket, making the stiff suspension more than a match for the corners.

shift surprisingly smoothly, and the custom sport muffler makes the car roar through the streets of Plano. Originally the car, like so many other 914s, was Signal Orange, but it seems this one was repainted Guards Red sometime in the past. The carpet kits and interior trim are all original, and contain the normal wear and tear found with a 40-year-old car. The trunk and hood storage spaces are immaculately clean, though there is a

As it is with many older cars, the 914 I purchased does need a little work, but most of it is cosmetic, and more than likely will serve as material for future Destination Restoration articles. The stock 2.0L D-Jetronic Fuel Injection fires right up, and seems to be in great shape, with no leaks of any kind visible. The transmission and clutch

significant scratch on the hood from the previous owner, and the trunk rollers have deteriorated to where the trunk won’t close all the way.

I chose to go with a 914 because they are quick, nimble, and easy to work on. I am a firm believer that air cooled engines are where it is at, and am already on the hunt for another! Luckily, with my Uncle’s 914/6 conversion, featured in previous articles, I have plenty of spare 914 parts at my disposal. I even have the option of swapping out the stock 2.0L engine for one of my Grandpa’s complete 2.0L engines that he bored out to 2.2. Using his extra set of 40mm IDA Webers for fuel delivery, I think I can make a beast of a 914. Another route that I can take is converting the 914 into a 914-6, as I have an extra 2.7L flat six from the 911 build. For now, I am going to start small; I want fix some of the exterior blemishes, add a

Cars and Cattle: Poker Run and Concours d’Non Elegance By Blake Small

O

ctober 5 marked the date for the inagural “Cars and Cattle: Poker Rally and Concours d’Non Elegance” event, hosted at the ranch of fellow Maverick Region members Debbie and Kyle Fahrenthold. The temperatures ran low while the horsepower was up high. The day started off at a central meeting point in Richardson, where the group of about 40 made their way through the beautiful scenic countryside of North Texas en route towards the Fahrenthold Cattle Ranch. Upon arrival, guests greeted each other and warmed up over a hot cup of

Photos by David and Tracy Robertson coffee. The engines then fired, and the Poker Rally was underway. The course was laid out wonderfully through the tight and twisty roads of Collin County, where, at each checkpoint, Stuart’s Paint and Body had a team of officials giving each participant a card for their poker hand. With the five checkpoints covered, the rally took just under an hour to complete.

An intriguing turn on the Poker Rally route

This may be the answer to the question “what do you get when you cross a car with a cow?” Upon arriving back at “The Ranch,” scores were tallied, and the top three were awarded prizes from the different contributing sponsors. The Poker Rally winners were James Weber in first place, followed by Kim Hildewig with second place, and rounding out the top three was Patti Pettit in third.

We then took some time to look over each others’ cars and place our votes for the first annual “Concours d’Non Elegance.” We had a wonderful mix of vehicles on hand, from classic SCs to late model GT3s. James Weber won the Concours as well, taking the People’s Choice Award with his Guards Red Turbo, complete with carbon ceramic disk brakes. His prize was a $150 detailing from Stuart’s Paint & Body. Second place went to Alan Lage with his silver GT3.

Double winner James Weber (left) accepting a trophy from Stuart Singer of Stuart’s Body & Paint, and Kyle Fahrenthold, owner of the Cars and Cattle Ranch Following the car show, we all sat down and enjoyed a very fitting barbecue lunch catered by Hutchins BBQ in McKinney. Bobbie and Frank Briggs were the big door prize winners, with two tickets to the Dallas Arboretum, donated by the Fahrentholds.

The lunch, catered by Hutchins BBQ, was a hit with the participants.

The first ever Maverick Region Cars and Cattle: Poker Rally and Concours d’ Non Elegance went over with great success. We want to thank the Fahrentholds for hosting the event. We hope to make next year’s edition an even better one yet.

ALMS and WEC at COTA: Sports Car Racing Weekend in Austin By Alan Bambina

O

Photos by Linda Bambina

K, OK, enough with the alphabet soup! All of those acronyms in the title translate to American LeMans Series and World Endurance Championship at Circuit of the Americas. This little exposé is not about the entire weekend of racing with all the rain on Friday, lack of practice for the drivers before the race on Saturday, or the six hour endurance race on Sunday. It is about an incredible opportunity that was afforded to me for nothing more than having a little luck. This “luck” was having my name drawn for a raffle at the PCNA Hospitality tent at the race, and what I won was an up close and personal look at what the drivers and crew see all weekend long: the HOT PITS DURING THE RACE! Two happy Porsche Club members (as well as two Corvette Club members, two Viper Club members, two fill-in-the-blank car club members, etc.) were closely escorted up and down the entire length of the pits, viewing each team’s set-up for the race just on the inside of the concrete wall that separates the active pit box from the tool boxes and the telemetry. That

Alan with Paul Gregor, who is the PCNA Manager of Porsche Clubs North America was the surprise for me. How much electronics and communication there is between the pits and the cars. When you watch a race on TV, you see a lot of footage shot from a camera mounted on the roof of the car and perhaps one out the back. What you don’t see are all the rest of the camera images the teams don’t share with the networks. You don’t see the monitors with a dizzying array of data showing the drivers’ performance in each turn, the heart rate and blood pressure data, engine temperatures and pressures, and how the G-forces have an effect on lap times and tire wear. Some of the teams had a miniature studio of more than ten monitors right there on the pit wall all showing every conceivable detail of that car and drivers’ attitude. Led by Car Corral Fan Facilitators Tiffany and Diezel Lodder, this fire-suited group of winners went down the entire length of the pits, then back, stopping at strategic locations to point out an important detail or two. Problem was, not all the participants had headphones to hear his microphone, so he tried to shout. Not a prayer. The noise level of an Aston Martin screeching to a halt, fueling and rejoining the fray was more than his voice could overcome, so most of us didn’t try to hear him. We witnessed two hot pit stops while there, and lots of hurried preparation for upcoming stops. If we lingered too long in one spot, Tiffany tried to coax us along in an unsuccessful attempt to keep us all together. Seriously? You try to keep a bunch of drooling motorheads together.

Alan (center) and the other red-suited winners going places that very few race fans ever get to experience first hand. All too soon, our time in the pits came to an end, and we had to wiggle out of our cool (darned hot) red Nomex fire suits. A few group pictures were taken, and we were once again part of the great unwashed race fan conglomerate. I was lucky (again) to have my very own personal photographer handy, although she was stopped at the gate and prevented from tagging along.

My many thanks to Paul Gregor as well as Diezel and Tiffany Lodder for organizing this unforgettable trip down a path mere mortals hardly ever see. Some days, it is more about the cars.

uten tag, Maverick PCA members! Hoosier Tires Direct .com is proud to be a new sponsor of the Maverick Region. Hoosier Tires Direct was established FOR track enthusiasts BY track enthusiasts and is proud to be an authorized Hoosier Tire dealer that carries the full line of Hoosier race tires and track tires. We are active PCA members and try to personally fit in 30 track days a year to get the most enjoyment out of our current track cars (GT3RS and Cayman R). Even though we are located in Iowa, we keep the GT3RS in Texas during the brutally cold Iowa winter months to be sure we can attend driving events year round. I have had a chance to recently participate in your events at MotorSport Ranch Cresson and have enjoyed meeting current members. In addition to the Cresson events, I have been fortunate to participate in five track days at COTA, as well as experiencing an introduction to Texas World Speedway so far during 2013. Short of the NĂźrburgring, I consider COTA to be my favorite track so far, and after attending the F1 race last November, I was excited to be able to try it out myself during 2013. While we have already sold lots of Hoosier tires to Maverick members and others throughout the great state of Texas, we are looking forward to meeting more of you and having the opportunity to earn your track tire business in the

Drivers’ Education Event 4: MotorSport Ranch 1.7-mile course By Lori Mauthe, outgoing DE Chair

T

he Maverick Region Fall Drivers’ Education Series kicked off in style the weekend of September 21-22. Attendance was fantastic on this wonderful Saturday fall morning. We enjoyed our donuts and coffee prepared very early by our hospitality princess, Rose Gohlke. Thanks to our sponsor Falgout and Associates, and our Treasurer Jim Falgout for the goodies. The drivers’ meeting for the students was standing room only – perhaps because there weren’t enough chairs -- and because we had full groups for green and blue, and very healthy attendance in yellow and white. Thanks to Joel Nannis our registrar for getting everyone signed in, which was hopefully the last time the students had to talk to Joel, as the next time would likely be at the black flag station. By Sunday afternoon the distribution had changed because so many of our drivers earned promotions – thanks to our great instructor group: Chief Driving Instructor John Sandusky, Jim Buckley, and the rest of the instructor team leads. We ran incident-free for the entire weekend, save

Bob Benson, our safety guru, always assembles a great crew for our events. We like our corner workers and safety teams to have a boring few days, yet they are anything but bored. the control center in the tower. A driver may not like getting the black flag with the orange circle, affectionately called the “meatball” flag. However, when they come into the pit lane and the black flag official finds a leak, or some loose item, they realize that they were just saved from a very expensive repair. When a driver may miss their brake point and go off track or spin out in a corner, the corner workers are so fast to get out the yellow flag to warn others to slow down. We truly could not run such a fine quality event without this great crew on our corners. So next time you are at an event, wave to them on the warm up and cool down laps, and be sure to say thank you at lunch time. Travis Howard, our Gridmaster, did a fantastic job as always, managing the “waiting area” on the grid, as students and instructors wait in anticipation for their run group

to start. He makes sure everyone is strapped in, helmets fastened, windows down and READY. He smiles all day long! Thank you Travis, for all that you do.

both days. I had many students come up to me during the course of the weekend and comment on how much they learned and enjoyed their presentations. Lunchtime featured our charity laps, and the Susan G Komen foundation was our charity. We had record contributions from a great group of DE’ers and guests. Families with two small kids in the back seat of a 911 enjoyed 5 laps around our great home raceway. In the pavilion, the catered lunch from Del Norte was fantastic as always. More bench racing, and we can’t wait to get back on track! On Saturday afternoon, after the final run group, many stayed for the track walk. A few of us training for the Komen 3-Day 60-mile walk literally walked the full 1.7 mile track, but that’s not what the track walk was really all about. Each run group was assigned a corner to start with, and the

A group taking the Saturday Evening track walk classroom instructor gave an in depth explanation of how to drive the corner, up close and personal. Walking through the corner brings a totally new perspective, and in particular, looking back from the apex, you see elevation changes and nuances of the track that just aren’t comprehended at 60+ mph. Once seen this close, driving through at speed the next day brings more precision and overall fun! The groups spent 15-20 minutes at each corner, and the proceeded to the next. Thanks to our instructors for staying overtime for the track walk experience. This event was my last full event as your DE Chair, since Peter and I have moved to Michigan. I will

certainly miss all of the great people who have touched my life through the program. Special thanks to Wendy Shoffit and John Hamilton for their support on the logistics and on-event coaching. I was overcome with emotion when John presented me with a special plaque of appreciation as we passed the baton to Chris Tabor on Sunday morning. Chris will be taking on the DE Chair role going forward, and he brings enthusiasm and fresh ideas to keep the improvement and enhancement of the student experience forward. I hope to see many of you at other events down the road.

I Get Around: The Memories Last a Lifetime By Dick Badler

Courtesy High Gear, the Rocky Mountain Region Newsletter

Editor’s Note: Denver resident Dick Badler writes regularly for outlets that include TFLCar.com, Planet-9.com, and High Gear, the publication of the Rocky Mountain Region of PCA. Over the years, Dick has owned six Porsches. He still has number three, a ‘78 911SC, which he bought in 1988.

I

t happened just like that. As I was leaving an appointment, my host introduced me to her next client. Then she noted, almost parenthetically, “. . . oh, and she knows something about cars and racing.” Really? “Oh yes,” my host said. “Does the name Peter Revson mean anything to you?” Uh . . . yeah . . . “Well, meet his sister, Julie.” No kidding! Julie and I chatted for a few minutes. And, in the course of the conversation, she dropped the names of people she met and knew. Dan Gurney, Roger Penske, Jackie Stewart. And she asked me if I read “the book.” What book? Why, the book co-written by the late editor of Autoweek, Leon Mandel: “Speed With Style: the Autobiography of Peter Revson.” I hadn’t. For no good reason. I always admired Leon Mandel’s work, especially at Autoweek. So my host said “just a minute” and came back with a copy of the book that Julie had obviously loaned to her. “Here,” she said, “just don’t lose my place.” I followed up with my host to get Julie’s contact information, to see 24 November

if she’d be willing to talk about her brother, say, over lunch. And so we met for what turned out to be a much longer conversation than I expected. Here are the highlights. The first thing I did was cram on the book, in order to prepare. And that’s where I had my first surprise: it turns out that the book was published posthumously. It came out the day after Revson died, testing at Kyalami in South Africa. The publisher and Mandel decided to leave it in circulation anyway. It became very clear that Julie idolized her brother. He was the oldest of four; Julie was third. “If it had not been for the accident, he would have retired at the end of the 1974 season,” she said. “He wanted to do other things.” She paused. “I miss him every day.” “What do you think of his career?” she asked me. I said I thought he was very, very good. And very, very driven, so to speak, which is what it takes. But he was broader-minded than a lot of his competitors. He could walk away. And that probably kept him from becoming a real potential world champion. I said that, in every era, there’s always someone who stands out as the best of the best. But these people are willing to make a supreme personal sacrifice to get there. If you don’t have it in you, if you don’t have that single-minded focus, beyond all else, it’s not going to happen. “Like Schumacher?” Yes, like Schumacher, before he retired the first time. I think Schumacher was so driven, he couldn’t get it out of his system. Nothing else compared. Nothing else probably even came close. So

he came back . . . and did nothing . . . and he retired again. “And Peter?” Let’s put it in perspective. To get to Formula 1 is unbelievable. To do so as an American is really unbelievable. And to win two Grands Prix, in a career cut short, is really, really unbelievable. She smiled. “Who’s at the top today?” Oh, Vettel. No question. And the thing is, he comes across as a kid, with this grin, as if to say, “Pinch me. Isn’t this incredible? I’m as amazed about my career as you are.” It’s kind of like Jay Leno saying, hey, if you were me, you’d indulge your car passion like me, too. But look, I said, it was a long time ago, 39 years. “Yes, but you’d be amazed. People remember. I was at Amelia Island, and people were coming up to me. They wanted my autograph. Mine. “At the Daytona 24-hour race, I saw Dan Gurney. I went up to him and introduced myself. I didn’t think he heard me. So I said it again. And then, oh, he spun around. He was very polite, and he invited me to come to any race, as his guest, just let him know. “You know, we lost another brother, a few years earlier, Douglas. Also racing. But I think he just did it because Peter did it.” Didn’t Peter win Sebring in a Porsche with Steve McQueen? “Second. And, by the way, Peter drove nine of the 12 hours - McQueen had a broken foot.” Peter never married, and never had children. Do you have children? “One son.” Is he interested in racing?

“Yes, but mostly NASCAR. Go figure. But he has the same personal drive, the same focus as Peter. It’s eerie.” The book really intimates that he would have had one season left. What do you think he would have done, after he retired?

“Oh, Peter was working on it. He already had a car dealership and a memorabilia and parts store. He wouldn’t become a Roger Penske. Penske never stops. It’s his life. But Peter would have figured it out.” And, with that, Julie stared out past me, into space.

Flashing Lights in the Hill Country: Hill Country Rallye 2013 By Michael Vriesenga, Longhorn Region PCA and Lone Star 912 Fifty years ago, Porsche owners acknowledged each other when they passed on the road by flashing their lights. It was a friendly way of recognizing the love of driving and fine machinery that Porsche ownership implied. During March 21-24, 2013, that common love of back roads and great cars bloomed again as 56 classic Porsches, including eleven 356s, thirty-two 911s, and twelve 912s gathered in Boerne for the 12th Annual Hill Country Rallye (HCR).

from as far away as North Carolina, California, Mexico and Japan. Friday morning dawned cool and misty, while two groups circled west from Boerne up Highway 16 to Kerrville and then east to the Alamo Springs Café and General Store. It’s easy to enjoy both the switchbacks through the Medina Mountains and the third best burgers in Texas. After lunch, drivers chose “hops” or “grapes” for tours of the Real

Ale Brewing Company in Blanco or the Sister Creek Vineyard.

Porsche enthusiasts from around Austin organize the Hill Country Rallye annually. It is not sponsored by any organization, and there is no competition. HCR offers an opportunity to share your passion for Porsches with fellow enthusiasts over curving back roads, tasty meals, and parking lot talks in a lawn chair with your favorite beverage. This year that passion drew Porsche drivers and fans

Following a catered barbecue dinner, Shiner and conversation flowed freely in the parking lot as drivers admired and discussed each others’ cars. The Porsches from Monterrey, Mexico were among the most distinctive: brightly colored, immaculately prepared, and diligently washed and dried after each drive.

ian buffet supper, California wine, and door prizes, but no awards. The Hill Country Rallye is a celebration of driving great roads and a shared passion for Porsches, not a competition. Morrie Larson of Lone Star 912, as well as Jamie Novak and Bill Conway, deserve a standing ovation for the work they did putting HCR 2013 together. Sean Brindley’s Web site (http://www.hillcountryrallye. org) looks great now and should get better in the future.

Saturday, the Porsches split into driving and touring groups. The driving group explored the “Three Sisters,” famous for their length and curves. The touring group twisted up Crabapple Creek Road 25

Autocross 5 Results: An Autocrosser 16 Years in the Making By Jasmine Shoffit

I

f you don’t know me, my name is Jasmine Shoffit and I’m the daughter of James and Wendy Shoffit. My parents joined the Porsche Club when I was about 9 months old, so I’ve been around cars pretty much my entire life and I’ve always been expected to go into cars too. Pretty recently I got my driver’s license and, as you could probably guess, my parents were elated. They couldn’t wait to sign me up for my first autocross. This all seemed pretty natural to me. I mean, of course I would start driving like my parents, of course I would start doing autocrosses, of course I would eventually graduate from watching Disney movies in the back of our car during the events. But I didn’t really feel ready. And I still don’t, to be honest. I really like my Disney princess movies. Not to mention the fact that I’m not even confident enough in my driving to drive completely alone. Nevertheless, I let them sign me up.

off. I really don’t know how my parents convinced me to go at that point, but they did, and we arrived at our destination: a big, empty, paved lot that we rent from the Mineral Wells airport to autocross on. I could already see the sea of cones making up the course and I felt like I was going to throw up. But even if I chickened out, my parents were still going to race, so we began emptying the Fiat.

That’s right, I said Fiat. I can’t handle the clutch quite As the day of my first autocross EVER (as I kept being well on the Boxster or 911s, so we had to bring my tiny, reminded by my parents and everyone who knew me in cute little red Fiat. The pros to bringing it are: I’m the club) approached, I began to feel more and more familiar with it; driving it in the autocross will help me nervous. I was scared about killing the car, spinning, better understand the limitations of it; and it’s really running over every single cone, but mostly not being cute. The cons are: I’m in a Fiat at a Porsche event; able to live up to everyone’s expectations. I have some pretty big shoes to fill. helmet with a tiara airbrushed on it that I borrowed from my mom, and adjusting my seat to a more proper racing position. As I drove up to the starting line, I was already getting a lot of sideline support, even though I killed it probably three times just getting there. Nerves, I guess. I like to imagine my mom was dramatically wiping a tear from her eye in a very cinematic moment as I started my first run. But that probably didn’t happen. What did happen though, was that I was given the signal to go and I lifted my foot off the clutch and pressed the gas . . . and went about 10 mph towards the first turn. My dad, who was instructing me, kept saying “Gas, gas, gas, gas, gas!” but it wasn’t making me go that much faster. I did eventually start gaining speed through the course, but I was still extremely nervous (and sick). I think for my first run I got like a 120. I ran again, and this time I

actually took my father’s suggestions and I knocked off 10 seconds. Again and I got 3 seconds faster. I was feeling pretty good by this point, then my friend Geneva, who was also new at autocrossing, pulled up and her time was one second faster. Ugh. I didn’t let it get to me, though. In this competition, the only person I could compete with was myself. So two runs and two hit cones later, it was time for lunch and I was feeling good about myself. I ate a tasty burger and shake then we went back to the track. I was confident that I was going to go faster, looking at the way I had improved in the morning. I was wrong. I got waaaay slower. My first run of the afternoon was very close to my second run of the morning, back when I was still scared to accelerate, and this time I had hit a cone. I was a little mad, but I figured it was just a fluke and I was going to get better. My next run

I didn’t hit a cone (yay), but I got a very similar time to the previous one. Then the next run I got my first DNF . . . and hit a cone. Needless to say, I was a bit frustrated (for a visual, imagine Godzilla tearing apart Tokyo). Everybody kept trying to calm me, saying that most people got slower in the afternoon, but it didn’t matter, I was still extremely mad. It was only until after the event was over and we were driving home that I did calm down. Reflecting on my first autocross EVER, I really did have fun. It was really cool and everyone was really nice and supportive, as they usually are. It was a really good learning experience for me, especially learning to never take my afternoon runs. I also learned a good lesson in wearing sunscreen. Ouch. I will definitely want to go autocrossing again, and maybe next time I’ll drive an actual Porsche.

Simultaneously breaks new ground, while clinging to the current one. Take the performance that Porsche is known for. Then add to that the strength of a 400 horsepower engine, the design and greater stability of a wider body, the extraordinary traction and agility of all-wheel drive, and an unmistakable illuminated rear light strip.
