Shifting Gears:

New Region Logo and More

By David Robertson, Region Vice President

W

ell, it is hard to believe that November is here already. It doesn’t seem like it should be so close to the end of the year yet! What better time to get the car out of the garage and get together with other club members! We have many opportunities in the club for you to get out and enjoy your Porsche with other folks that are just as excited as you about owning such a great automobile. Not only can you go out on a group tour that always ends at a fun destination, but you can also participate in a driving event where you can learn about your Porsche and experience firsthand what it can really do on the track. We also get together for social events around the DFW area to just meet and greet other people in the club. There is something for everyone, so check the Maverick PCA calendar. There is always some type of event coming up soon. The Maverick Region hosts a board meeting every month, and all PCA members are welcome to attend. The board meeting is where all the committee chairs report on their past and future activities, as well as take care of club business. The October meeting was very significant, in that a vote was taken to choose the new Region logo. You may or may not know that the last Maverick Logo was first developed over 50 years ago, and has been layered on over the years to the point where it was not workable for modern digital production The current and other uses. A committee Maverick was formed by experts Bill Orr, Logo was first Charlie Davis, Teri Davis, and Fran Ussery to get together and developed come up with proposals to presover 50 ent to the board. All the designs years ago were beautiful and well thought out. I want to think the committee once again for the amazing job they did in designing the logo and the many, many hours of work they put in on this project. The committee met several times in person and exchanged countless emails to come up with three designs that were presented for a vote. I was intrigued to see this process evolve until the committee felt that, as an outsider getting nervous about this actually coming together, I was cut out of the communications, although I must say, that was probably a smart move on their part! I was assured that progress was being made and, as promised, club history was made. You will begin to notice the new logo popping up as we get it into print and onto all the Maverick Region materials. 2 November

MAV OF THE MONTH: George Luxbacher If you have attended one of the many Maverick events over the past few years, you probably recognize George as the guy that always has a high end camera around his neck, taking great pictures of all the amazing people and cars. Many of the photos you enjoy across all of the Maverick media outlets such as Slipstream, Facebook, and our website have come from George. As Rally Co-Chair, George has also been instrumental in keeping that program not only alive and well but thriving like never before. Recently George has stepped in and taken over the big responsibility of managing the annual photo contest in the middle of doing extensive travel for his so-called “part time job in retirement! Thank you George for all of your time and energy! Dee and George

Gimme a Minute:

October Board Meeting

By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

T

he meeting began a little early at 6:44 pm, as Drivers’ Education Chair Chris Tabor needed to leave early. He reported that the September DE event was the highest attended in a long time. Everyone had a great time, including the tour drivers who showed up on Sunday to drive parade laps, despite the rain. He expressed appreciation for his entire DE committee. VP David Robertson was again standing in for a recovering Jim Falgout. Bill Orr led the discussion about the newly revised logo, submitted by the logo committee. They discussed overall design and color and showed multitudes of iterations, eventually showing the final three, which the board voted on by secret ballots. The final design received 17 votes, while the losing two got 7 and 0 votes respectively. It will be unveiled at the Annual Celebration on November 5. Editor Jim Hirsch reported for Membership Chair John Hamilton that we are down seven members from last month. We have 1,687 Primary and 2,570 total members. He expressed his appreciation for members who help make Slipstream better, including George Luxbacher, Charlie Davis, Carey Spreen, and Wendy Shoffit. Advertising Chair Bill Kruder said Autoscope is rejoining as a Slipstream advertiser. He has been contacting all advertisers and has been soliciting new ones, including trying to get a national company on board. Volunteer Chair Jim Gallegos reported that someone stepped up to help out with the online calendar. We still need more people to fill open positions. Social Co-Chair Phyllis Gallegos said the Annual Celebration is on 6 November

Nov. 5 at the NYLO Hotel. This will be a more casual, fun affair, with no formal sit-down meal. She and others are working on donations for the silent auction. She has also set up May at Mayos for 2017. Goodie Store Chair Chris Flaugh has many decals with the soon to be retired logo on it. PCA Tours Chair Tom Martin set a goal to collect $1,500 for the Hope Shelter from the MotorSport Ranch tour drivers. Because the rain caused many to opt out, we only collected $941 in cash and cards. He asked no-shows to bring the gift cards to a future event. The next tour is to Rancho Sereno, which has some of the best roads. He has a tentative 2017 schedule planned out and has two potential co-chairs to help. He expressed his appreciation for the DE committee for being so welcoming to the tour group and showing them such a great time. Monthly Dinner Social Chair Stephanie Ho reported that the Porsche Birthday party at Arthur’s was a great success. Because of space constraints, she had to limit attendance, which included roughly 20 new members. She thanked several board members for talking to the attendees about their events. October’s event will be at Uncle Buck’s in Grapevine. There will not be an event in November, but she will get one together for December. Rally Co-Chair George Luxbacher mentioned the October Rally event should be interesting. He and Don Sebert hope to have all attendees in costume. The rally will end at Fortunata Winery in Aubrey, where they will fire up the pizza ovens just for us. They have been doublechecking all the rally roads. George also reported on the photo contest. He has had many inquiries so far and has 15 entrants (21

October 5, 2016 photos). He is working with Charlie Davis and Tracy Robertson on the details and display. He vows to start planning earlier next year. Charlie Davis wants to designate a special place on our website to store logos and such to create consistency for the new artwork. We will publish the logo in the December issue. Safety Chair Joe McGlohen reported that we have safe events. Secretary Wendy Shoffit reported for Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr, who had a great event with 11 Porsches participating (64 cars total), including an SUV. He is putting together an article for Slipstream and looks forward to the final two events of the season on Oct. 30 in Burleson and Nov. 13 at Lone Star Park, where Bill Orr will have a Cars and Scones activity. Although he was there, Bill Middleton had to leave before giving a report, but left a note thanking Tom Martin and the DE committee for the great collection for Hope. Wendy also reported that we have a DE event in October and then a Club Race and solo-only DE at MSR in November. The date of the COTA Club Race in Austin is now in March instead of May, hoping to draw a larger crowd, taking over the Texas World Speedway date. She received an email from the President of Hill Country Region, Tracey Gross, asking if Maverick was working on PCA license plates for Texas. Bill Orr and David Robertson will contact her to coordinate efforts. Wendy also mentioned that we could use ClubRegistration.net for more social, tour, and rally events, and offered help to anyone wanting to learn. DE Safety Committee member Bob Kramer has met with other members and is working to improve procedures and management at the events.

Time Trial Chair Travis Howard reported that the event on Sept. 18 was a great event. It filled up and participants enjoyed 14 timed runs each. Even with so many runs they still finished early. A Porsche got top time of day after several years it being an “other” car. He awarded silver coin trophies. He has been the TT chair for nine years, but with a job change, he’s not sure if the program will continue. He hopes an enthusiast will take it over. Reporting for wife, Robyn, she has a Swap Meet on Oct. 8 at Zims Autotechnik. Slipstream Content Editor Carey Spreen said that UNT has begun to archive Slipstreams. They discovered all 1998 issues missing. He hopes to find replacements. Treasurer Richard Solomon said that the region is healthy with over $150K in the bank. We have roughly half the advertisers paid up for the year. The cost of printing Slipstream is on the rise. We netted a good amount from the last DE and finally received a check for a small amount from the COTA race in May. He wants to work on sending money to our two charities, the Hope Shelter and the Boot Campaign. David Robertson encouraged every chairperson to have a backup for their position. Lastly, he congratulated George Luxbacher for being Maverick of the Month! Meeting adjourned at 8:38 pm.

Five Speed Chatter: By Ash Seidl-Staley

W

You Gotta Be Able to Stop!

elcome back Mavs! I hope all have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather these last couple of weeks. Moderate temperatures are perfect for driving a classic Porsche, and with winter rapidly approaching, driving days are numbered. The past two articles discussed in this miniseries have dealt with improving your Porsche’s performance. First we hashed out some cheap engine upgrades, and then we discussed how to increase the rigidity and stability of our Porsche’s frame. This month I want to take time to postulate on the various brake upgrades and maintenance procedures we can utilize to increase our stopping power, because it’s cool to go fast, but it’s even cooler when you’re able to stop. To understand what upgrades are out there we must first look to the past. The development of the Porsche brake disc is fascinating. From the annular disk brakes employed on the 1962 356 B Carrera 2 to the 420mm ceramic brake disc being stopped by the 2015 Cayenne’s ten-piston brake calipers, the developers in Stuttgart have kept up with power gain in the engine bay. During this span of time and development the brake disc itself has gone through many different changes. In the early 1970s, brake discs were internally vented; this allowed for the heat generated while braking to dissipate between the friction surfaces of the disc. In 1974, crossdrilled brakes made their debut on the 911 Carrera 3.0. The precisely drilled holes on the brake disc were designed to disperse the buildup of brake pad grit as well as any water splashing up from wet roads. From the late seventies to the turn of the millennium, Porsche brake discs maintained these two forms with only variations in thickness and diameter being altered. During this lull, Porsche development turned to improving the brake calipers themselves. The 1977 911 Turbo saw the introduction of the four-piston brake caliper, the 928 S of the 1980s employed anti-lock brakes, and the 1996 Boxster introduced the Monobloc aluminum brake calipers. By 2001, Porsche had launched its most extensive brake disc upgrade with the PCCB (Porsche Ceramic 2015 PCCB assembly Composite Brake). Replacing the bulky and heavy cast-iron discs Photo by with lighter ones made from ceStephan Chevalier ramic composite not only shaved off half the weight of the braking system, it improved driving comfort and increased braking performance. When you are lucky enough to purchase a new Porsche from our good friends at the dealership, you 10 November

are bombarded with a barrage of brake packages and upgrades that can be bolted onto the car at varying prices. Determining which package to get, which really comes down to the amount one is willing to spend, depends on how the car will be used. If racing is in the car’s future, opt for the racing package; if style and comfort are more important, the standard brake package will suffice. To each his own. But what about those of us that already have older Porsches? What can we do to upgrade our stopping power? Well, just like we saw with engine and suspension mods, brake options are boundless and are really only limited by your pocketbook. Upgrading your classic Porsche’s brake system can be extremely advantageous right from the get-go. Wayne Dempsey’s book But new packages, like continues to be a valuable those found on Peliresource for these projects can.com, can get really pricey. There are, however, minor things you can do at home to increase your braking power without breaking the bank. Replacing brake pads, replacing worn discs and upgrading them to cross-drilled behemoths, and replacing the stock brake line system for a set made of stainless-steel and Teflon can quickly bring the grit back to your brake pedal. You can even choose to rebuild brake calipers, or replace the original brake master cylinder for a slightly larger aftermarket one. Porsches are unique vehicles because their parts, modifications, and upgrades can usually be interchanged between models. My 914, for example, can house 911 M calipers on the disc of my choosing, and I have even seen others make use of 944/951 brake calipers for their mods. No matter what you choose to do with the brake systems, it is important to be extra cautious of your work. Tampering with brakes of a car can be really dangerous, and should only be accomplished by those with patience and a tech manual. Bleeding the brakes will be a must, and it would be a good idea to get your work inspected by your trusted mechanic before really opening the car up on the roads. As always, stay safe, and Wrench on Mavs!

Know Your Porsche:

WHERE’S MY DIPSTICK!?!

By John Hamilton, Region Membership Chair

S

o you’ve been driving your new Porsche for a while and are wondering how to check the oil level? OR,

An indicator in the display screen comes on “MINIMUM OIL LEVEL REACHED”. How the heck do I check my oil level? OIL LEVEL MEASURING INSTRUCTIONS: Since the 2010 model year, oil level measurement in Porsches is done electronically. However, there is a change in the method since there is no longer a physical dipstick. Here’s the process: 1. The engine must be at operating temperature. This requires running your Porsche sports car for at least 10 minutes. The Cayenne, Macan, or Panamera require driving about 10 miles to get them sufficiently warmed up. 2. Your Porsche must be on a level surface and not moving. 3. ENGINE ON OR OFF? In some Porsches, the engine must be running. In others, the engine must be off. Your display will tell you as you attempt to measure the oil. 4. The oil measurement is done through the “Multifunction Display” (the round LCD display just to the right of the tachometer, in front of the driver). a. Change the Multifunction Display to the screen named “Vehicle”. (image 1 below) b. Press your selector in (toward the front of the car). c. Highlight “Oil level” and press the selector in again. (image 2 below) 5. The graphic display will show the side-profile of an engine with a vertical bar. (image 3 below)

OIL FILLING INSTRUCTIONS Once you have measured your oil, and if you have gotten the “MINIMUM OIL LEVEL REACHED” indication, it is important that you ONLY ADD ONE QUART OF OIL AT A TIME. If you over-fill your oil, you will get a warning that the oil level has exceeded the maximum. This warning will be displayed each time you start your Porsche until such time as the oil level has been reduced to the normal operating level. OPERATING WITH TOO MUCH OIL CAN DAMAGE YOUR ENGINE. Your service center can correct this, but it usually requires an oil change to solve the problem. To top off your oil: 1. TURN THE ENGINE OFF. 2. The engine will still be hot so have a glove or protective cloth to insulate your hand. 3. Locate and remove the oil filler cap. 4. Pour in one quart of the recommended weight (see your owner’s manual) synthetic oil. 5. Re-measure the oil level using the previous instructions. 6. If the oil level shown is between the minimum and maximum levels in the graphic display, DO NOT ADD MORE OIL. 7. Replace the oil filler cap. 8. You’re done! Thank you for loving your Porsche so much that you are maintaining it properly. Let us know how we can continue to serve you best!

IMPORTANT: The difference from minimum to maximum IS ONLY ABOUT 1 QUART OF OIL.

Kruder’s Cars & Conversations By Bill Kruder, Region Advertising Chair

T

his month we are taking a different approach. A few months back Slipstream Editor Jim Hirsch and I decided to stop in a local shop to see what was going on. After coffee we headed over to H&H Enterprises in east Plano. Well, once you find it -- and let me tell you it’s not easy -- we had the opportunity to learn a lot more than we bargained for. Afterward I told Jim that I think our club would enjoy hearing about people and places that are right amongst us. So, that being said, it was that first chance meeting that gave me the idea to write these interviews. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . . Jay Hildreth, proprietor of H&H Enterprises, 1987 911 Cabriolet owner, member since 2008. Bill Kruder: Jay, tell me about the shop. Jay Hildreth: Well it’s kind of a long story. My Grandpappy, my Dad’s Dad, actually started the shop in the 1940s in Big Spring, TX. They decided on the name H&H, as it was a father-son partnership, using our last name. It started out as a “fix and repair” body shop by Grandpappy, while my Dad would transform street cars into what we would call today “hot rods.” Then in the 60s, my Dad Wes took it over

Legendary air-cooled man, Wes Hildreth

and started to concentrate on just the “hot rod” part of it, essentially moving away from the body shop and engine building. BK: So how did your Dad go from building hotrods to little air-cooled engines? JH: Dad had a love for the VW air-cooled engines; he found them interesting, in that they were such simple engines, yet could be made to produce so much more. BK: So is that when he started his work on the air-cooled? JH: Well like I said it’s a long story. About that time a VW dealership opened in Big Spring and they needed a mechanic, so Dad went there. BK: How did you guys end up in Plano? JH: Well that’s kind crazy actually. The owner of Economy VW/ Porsche of Dallas was driving thru Big Spring and had an issue with his car, so he came into the dealership. Dad fixed his car in no time, and the owner offered my Dad a job in Dallas, saying that if he would move there he would send my Dad to Porsche School. Think this was about 1968-69; shortly thereafter it became I think Forest Lane Porsche+Audi and he worked and built engines till about 1978. BK: What did you think of all this? JH: Heck, it was pretty cool because it got me started working on them too. I was only about twelve then and I would go to work with my Dad. I even had my own shop uniform and I would help Dad rebuild air-cooleds in what they called the “unit room.” BK: So when did H&H Enterprises resurface? JH: Think it was 1978. My Dad decided he could do better if he was on his own; my Dad was never in it for the money, but because he loved the cars. So Dad literally

started up again in his garage. That lasted for about three years, until the city noticed it was no longer a “hobby,” and he would need a store front. So in 1981 we opened the shop we are standing in. BK: And you have been here the whole time? JH: Oh no; I worked with Dad all through high school until I graduated in 1980. Then a couple years went by and my Dad FIRED me. BK: Fired you? JH: Yes; he said “this is not the life I want for my son.” He knew I could do more, I guess. BK: So what did you do? JH: I went to college to study Mechanical Engineering. BK: And how did that work out? JH: Pretty well actually. I went on to work for Frito Lay as a project designer, where I rolled out the packaging systems for the launch of Sun Chips. Then for the next twentyplus years I moved as opportunities arose, and eventually became a VP with several firms designing high speed packaging systems. But every chance I had to be home I would be in the shop working on cars with my Dad. BK: So how in the world did you go from engineering systems to working on air-cooled engines again? JH: Well, about 2008, Dad wasn’t in the best health, so I moved back and started to help him while still commuting to my job in Louisville KY; that lasted about four years. So finally about 2012 I called it quits to the corporate life and partnered with Dad in the shop. BK: That was a pretty bold move. JH: Yes and no; Dad’s health was failing and I knew how much he loved the shop, so I thought, why not do what we both love. BK: And I understand your Dad passed away not long ago.

JH: Yes, Dad passed away two years ago, but the neat thing was that he worked in the shop doing what he loved right till the end. BK: So tell me about your first Porsche. JH: Because of Dad I always was working on them as a teenager, and one day wanted to own one – funny that Dad never did own one -- so in 1992 I acquired a 73 Alpine White 914 1.8L. BK: And what happened to it? JH: I still have it; it’s painted neon purple now. It’s kind of a project car still, as I’m building it with a 2.5L four-cylinder naturallyaspirated engine. My goal is to get it to about 250HP; not sure if it can be done but I’m going to make it happen. BK: And what are you actually driving today? JH: My daily driver is a 1987 911 Cab in Alpine White with Oxblood interior; I’ve done a few things

BK: You have certainly had quite the journey, ending up with what you love the most here in the shop. JH: I guess I have, but I realized long ago that this place was special to me; my goal as the third generation of “car guys” is to maintain the legacy that Grandpappy and my Dad created. And just maybe a fourth generation of father-son Hildreths will decide to keep it moving forward. Well once again, it never ceases to amaze me: the people we meet along the way if we only take a minute to stop and listen.

like add B&B exhaust, opened the throttle body and intake. Think at stock it had 217 HP and now produces about 240HP. Well, I should say, at its best it produced that. It’s been a tad neglected with the shop and everything. BK: I know you have a few other favorites tucked away. JH: I do; there’s a ‘69 white Beetle that I turned into a street rod of sorts, and also a 73 Squareback VW that’s kind of special. The Squareback was my Grandpa Jim’s car. BK: I hear that, despite how busy the shop keeps you, you’re doing some volunteer work? JH: I am. As a graduate of Plano Senior High, I was involved in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America program, and was even president of it my senior year. So recently I decided I would get back involved with what I loved and I’m going to help on a project they are working on.

Jay, the third generation of H&H

2016 Autocross Series: By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

E

quipe Rapide, with whom Maverick Region partners to put on our Autocross series, once again found a way to set up a very interesting course at the Burleson High School Stadium site. Challenging and very busy, the site is much like the Pennington Field location that we used to use for Autocross events. We had 11 Porsches (including an SUV) participating in the P classes, out of a total of 64 cars. John Massey in his Cayman S won class P2 and top Porsche PAX payout. Mark Steele, driving his 2014 991 GT3, won class P3 and took second quickest Porsche PAX. Mark Schnoerr in his 914 2.0 won class P4 and third quickest Porsche PAX, in spite of being the quickest Porsche at this event in terms of run times. No wonder Wendy calls PAX Black Magic! By the way, PAX stands for Professional Autocross indeX, and is used by many autocross organizations to equalize the times of participants running cars in different classes so that they can be directly compared, kind of like a golf handicap. Evan Schwobel drove his dad’s 996 DE car at his first Autocross for a win in class P7. October 2 Autocross #8 Results PCA 1 1T 2 PCA 2 1T 2 3 PCA 3 1 2 PCA 4 1T 2 3 PCA 7 1

The last two events of the season are October 30 at Burleson again, where CarStooms (say it out loud to get the full meaning) will be recognized for Halloween, and then the November 13 season finale will be at Lone Star Park, where PCA is planning a Cars and Scones activity to coincide with the Guns and Hoses Charity Autocross. PCA Tours Recap:

“Everyone Loves a Parade” at MSR

By Tom Martin, PCA Tours Co-Chair

A

utumn officially started on Thursday, September 22, but it wasn’t until three days later that associated weather descended upon the Metroplex. Heavy rain and thunderstorms threatened to force the cancellation of the September PCA Tour to MotorSport Ranch. Early Sunday morning, the weather reports called for overcast skies, with a 17% chance of rain for the start point, and a 24% chance of a thunderstorm at MotorSport Ranch. Live weather radar showed no precipitation in Duncanville, with a small storm approaching Cresson, the home of MSR. The decision to proceed with the Tour was made with Just follow the club flags the hope that the storm to find the start of in Cresson would pass by our PCA Tours the time the Tour groups arrived at MotorSport Ranch. Elsewhere, in the western sector of the Metroplex, heavy rain fell. Several Mavericks decided to forgo the Tour. Eventually, 39 hearty souls in 26 Porsches showed up to brave the elements, and possibly conduct some wet-weather testing. About 12 miles into the Tour, light rain began to fall. Rain was consistent for the rest of the event, in varying degrees of intensity, but not so hard as to exceed the capabilities of the drivers’ Some of the 26 Porsches that Porsches. Exit stratemade the wet drive gies were discussed with the Tour Leaders beforehand, but most of them stuck to the original route, even the somewhat harrowing corners of Massey Road. Some drivers bugged out, but those who remained made it safely to the track, and ahead of schedule. At the track, Chief Driving Instructor John Sandusky conducted a short classroom session, and answered questions about the Maverick HPDE program. Shortly thereafter, Tour drivers gridded up for parade laps in three groups, headed by Porsches with large numbers

Photos by Bill Orr on their doors. I assumed the “large numbers” thing was a good sign. Drivers then surrendered their $25.00 Walmart gift cards to Wendy Shoffit before heading out onto the track. The track was wet, and MotorSport Ranch in the wet can be very slippery. Correction: MotorSport Ranch in the wet IS very slippery. Delicate inputs of steering, acceleration, and braking were required to keep the Porsches pointed in the right direction. After three parade laps, drivers headed back to the clubhouse for some lunch, provided by Del Norte Tacos. As a testament to Del Norte, I had seconds. In the end, Tour drivers contributed $525.00 in Walmart gift cards and cash, and together with the DE program, a total of $941.00 was collected for the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. Drivers who didn’t make the Tour were encouraged to donate their $25.00 Walmart gift cards at a future PCA event. Thanks and kudos to Tour Leaders: Jon Glover, John Harvey, Bill Orr, and Mark Pitarresi, and big shout outs to Chris Tabor, John Sandusky, Wendy Shoffit, and Rose Gohlke for their warm welcome and for accommodating us at the track.

DE “Rookie” Experiences: By Peter Wen and Mark Palmer

E

ditor’s Note: the Maverick Region High Performance Driver Education (DE for short) events are one of the most popular member programs offered in terms of number of participants. What follows are two recent “rookie” HDPE experiences to encourage even more members to participate in future events. Tony Lisotta also drove in this event as a rookie DE driver, but had previous track time at MSR with SCCA’s Track Night in America program. Peter Wen, 2014 Cayman Do you secretly look forward to the next red light, just so you can cycle through the gears again? Do you enjoy spirited drives and hearing that flat-six engine roar at 6,000 rpm? Do you want to find out what your Porsche is capable of? If the answers are yes, yes, and yes, then the Drivers’ Education (DE) events may be for you! My name is Peter Wen. I was a DE virgin.

Peter and his 2014 Cayman

A relatively new, proud Porsche owner for just about a year, I fulfilled my childhood dream last Thanksgiving. I immediately joined the PCA and became a Maverick. According to the Mavs website: DE is an opportunity for Porsche owners to explore the handling of their performance cars and to learn the basics of high performance driving done safely. Still, I had my doubts. Do I really want to subject my baby to the harsh 18 November

conditions at the track? Thankfully, after talking with fellow Mavs and seeing their show-room-condition “track” cars, I was convinced to sign up. I knew my baby wanted to run as much as I did.

Another large DE event turnout

the next turns and to visualize where I should position my car on the track (the line). The reward and feedback were immediate: I was going faster than ever before! Going full throttle into a hairpin turn is one experience all Porsche owners should know first hand. Late trail braking, when done properly, well, required a spare pair of underpants for the uninitiated. The DE experience lived up to my expectations and more. It was simply amazing that I could go all-out on the track, then just pack up and go home at the end of the day in the same car! DE instructors were wonderful, skilled drivers who loved to share their knowledge with others. Above all else, the event was about education. Safety for all participants was job #1. I hope you will consider signing up for the next DE event. Take advantage of this unique opportunity our club has to offer. It is an experience few people ever get to enjoy. After two days at the beautiful MotorSport Ranch, my show-worthy Cayman is still shiny. The only change is that I now look for the apex whenever I make a turn on the streets, ramps . . . everywhere, really! I need help. And the only cure is more DE’s! See you at the track.

DE day started with check-in at 6:30 am, then a mandatory drivers’ meeting at 7:30. By then I had already received a couple wrist bands (by signing my life away), rented a helmet, and artfully taped my car numbers on the car. I felt like Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder before the Daytona race. I still could not believe how fortunate I was to drive on a real race track, full throttle, for 4 hours over the next two days! Sweet! Drivers were assigned into groups based on their skill level. Newbies were in the Green group. I was paired up with my instructor, Yann Watts, who rode shotgun with me the entire weekend. There were so much to learn and it was overwhelming at first. But Yann was there to coach me through it all via a little microphone in my helmet. Occasionally, he would reach over and grab my steering wheel, no doubt saving our lives. From drive line, turn in, apex, to track out, I learned a whole new set of vocabulary. With the completion of each session, my confidence grew as well as my appreciation of my little Cayman. The two Caymans on the night before the Eventually, I memorized the DE event - still clean and shiny! track. I started to anticipate

My comfort level improved with every track session, even in the rain Sunday morning. Signing Up is Easy: By Wendy Shoffit, Registrar

Registration Tips for DE Events

S

o you’re interested in signing up for a Drivers’ Education event but feel intimidated by the registration process? Have no fear! I’m going to give you some tips to hopefully make the process smooth. This will not be a screen by screen walk through, but more about HOW registration works smoothly. It might also help seasoned veterans who still make a mistake here and there. Clubregistration.net (aka CR.net) is the website MRPCA uses for all our DE and Club Race events. It’s been approved by PCA National and so we won’t be changing it any time soon. Other organizations use sites like Motorsport Reg and that works fine for their needs. We use CR.net.

You only have to sign up for an account once, so plan to spend a little time doing it right. Please use proper Upper Case and lower case letters. It’s takes an extra few seconds, but sure helps people like me who have a T-shirt that reads “I am silently correcting your grammar.” Correct email addresses are imperative, as that’s how we contact you if there are issues! And for goodness sakes, if you drive a Boxster, please make sure you spell it right! Otherwise the misspelling is there forever (like in elementary school – on your permanent record). If you’ve forgotten how to spell it, it’s written on the back of your car. I’ll wait here while you go check. Make sure you also include your PCA membership number in your profile, if you are a member. We give a discount for PCA members and I DO check when you sign up. Don’t sign up for a DE as a PCA member if you aren’t one. It just causes more work for registrars and

I am silently correcting your grammar.

28 November

delays your entry into an event. The discount pays for the PCA membership in less than 2 events and you get many other wonderful benefits of membership! When entering your experience information in the profile, it doesn’t do any good to fluff it up like you would a resume. Driving a go-kart when you were 12 isn’t as helpful as you think it would be. However, if you have driven with other organizing bodies that provide instruction on a race track in your car, that IS helpful. We want to make sure people are placed properly in run groups with great driving coaches. Over-exaggerating your skills so you can “Go FLAT OUT” will only serve to frustrate you and the other drivers on track with you. We don’t like demoting people, but will do so if needed. If you’re placed in a less experienced run group but drive well, trust me when I say the coaches WANT to promote you and WILL do so at the earliest opportunity. We want everyone to have a good time. So, once you have your profile all set up and are ready to sign up for an actual event, it can really be an easy experience! Event registration opens exactly 30 days prior to the event, so you can plan ahead. Start by logging into your account. If you’ve forgotten your username or password, DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT! Every person’s account contains their registration history, payment history, driving evaluations (yes, coaches write notes to help in the future). Just click the “forgot password” link and it’ll step you through it. If you still have troubles, CALL customer service. The people at CR.net are very nice and would much rather help you with a username/password situation than deal with merging seven different accounts in the future. Now that you’re logged in, you will have to click “Search for Events” to find the one you want. It should default to our local region events, but if it doesn’t, you can search for Maverick and it should pull up our list. Then click “Register” and it will give you all the details of the event, including price, sponsor, and track configuration. You can then click on “Register” to proceed. The next screen has you choose your Event Fee. If you’re a PCA member, click on “PCA members.” If you’re not, click on “NON-PCA members.” See how easy that is? Then you select your Vehicle. Don’t worry about a car number. If you’ve run with us before, it will automatically assign what you used last time. If you don’t have a number, it will automatically assign one to you. If you HATE that number and want to use a different one, fear not. You can search for reserved numbers by going to “My Account” > “Search Reserved #s” to find a

number you like that is not already in use. Finish registering and then email the registrar. There is nothing You can always search for a number not in you personuse, but good luck getting “911” or “918”! ally can do online to change your number; only the registrar can do that. Your run group will also be assigned for you. If you were promoted to Blue at your last event but it’s still showing Green, don’t panic. Just email the registrar after you get done registering. We will take care of it. Sometimes coaches forget to put information into your event profile and other times there are slight mistakes that can be discovered and fixed. If you want to sign up a Co-Driver for this event, you BOTH must register for the event! You can’t just put someone’s name in the Co-Driver field and share your track time; it unfortunately doesn’t work like that. Remember when I said before that every driver’s profile keeps track of driving history and all? That’s where this is important. Yes, it would be lovely to share the fee with someone else, especially if you THINK you only want to drive half the time. Trust me when I say when you get out there, you won’t WANT to share your driving time. Next up for most DEs is the possibility of purchasing lunch for each day. You don’t have to do this, but if you don’t want to bring a lunch or leave the track, it’s a convenient way to eat. We have a great caterer that brings delicious food for us to eat, and $10 is a good deal. Emergency Contact info is a must. We take every safety precaution at the track, but it’s still driving all out in your vehicle and things can happen. We need to know who to contact on your behalf just in case. Click the final Register button and you’re nearly done. It will then take you through the payment process, which goes through PayPal. If you have an account already, great. If you don’t you can easily sign up for one or opt to pay as a guest. You can also choose to buy other fun things available from CR.net if you want or you can always come back to that later on their website. Vinyl car numbers are cool to have and look better than painter’s tape, BUT if you aren’t sure if you’re going to like DE’ing, just use the blue tape to make your numbers and save some moolah. Once you get registered, it takes about one to two weeks to get your event confirmation. There’s nothing

wrong if it takes longer -- it just means the registrar got busy. Do watch your email, though, in case there are issues that need addressing. Registrations that are NOT PAID, or ones that have unresolved questions, will not be confirmed and could be delayed. Delayed confirmations might result in your being put on a waiting list if your group fills up. It’s more likely for the less experienced run groups to fill than the higher ones, so don’t wait to sign up! Also, don’t be afraid to pay. If you have to cancel prior to 10 days before the event, we will gladly refund your money. If it’s within 10 days, refunds are not guaranteed. If we can fill your spot with another driver, no problem. Other requests are taken on a case-by-case basis. Failure to show up at the event forfeits your entry fee. Final confirmations go out the week of the event. That’s when you will receive an event schedule, map, and all kinds of other goodies. Prior to that you will receive a tech form that you MUST have filled out by an approved inspection station. Forms are available on our website under the Events > DE tab. Before you ask: YES . . . you MUST have an inspection done before EVERY event, even if you just drove in a DE last week. Your car’s brakes, tires, etc. can be significantly different after each event. Remember, safety is paramount. Oh, and unless you are approved to self-tech your car, you must have a shop do it for you. The approved ones (mostly the places listed in Slipstream) will do it for you for FREE. If a shop wants to charge you, go someplace else. They must sign the form and YOU must sign it, as well. You are responsible for the safety of your vehicle. Getting them to tech it a week before the event is a good idea in case there’s a problem that needs to be fixed. Oh, and please remember to bring your form when you come to registration Saturday morning. We will ask you for it and you won’t be allowed to drive without it. After you get it tech’ed, just leave it in your car so you won’t forget it! Regarding helmets: MotorSport Ranch has some rentals available, so you don’t need to go out and buy your own right away, unless you know for sure you want to do this many times and you’d much rather have a helmet with your own sweat in it instead of someone else’s. Buy it from a performance racing shop or a motorcycle shop, but they MUST be Snell 2010 approved or newer. You will need an SA helmet designed for auto racing and not an M helmet rated for motorcycles. If you have a question, feel free to ask. We do our best to educate you at every turn so you not only know the answer, but you know WHY it’s the answer. We want you to have a great time and spread the love to all your friends. Then they tell two friends and so on. . .

Car Care:

Waterless Wash and Shine Products

By Bill Kruder, Region Advertising Chair

S

o do you wash your car once a month? Once a week? Every other day maybe? How about after a rain or driving through lawn sprinkler overrun? When you decide it’s time, you drag out the hose. It kinks up of course. You grab the bucket, add your favorite liquid carwash product, and grab the sponge. You are now ready for an “enjoyable” time in your driveway with the Texas sun bearing down on you. First, the initial rinse: wash one side of the car and rinse it again, because if not you get the dreaded water spots. Then you move to the other side and repeat. Now for the final rinse and race to dry it before it leaves any spots. Needless to say we have all done it, and at best we have a “clean” car.

ucts out there: Mothers, Griot’s, and Meguiar’s, just to name a few. And to each his/her own as to what brand you like, or the reason you buy it. The one I was turned on to is Optimum No Rinse Wash and Shine. Unlike some of the other products, the best source to purchase the Optimum products is Amazon or other online retailers.

The result is shown immediately after the wash with my 1982 911 SC

Now what if it could be done in twenty minutes or less with only a bucket and NO hose, while in your garage? No worries about the water spots. No hose to kink up and best of all for the “tree huggers,” no wasted water running down the driveway. (Editor’s note: California may have invented the waterless wash concept, but it’s definitely needed here in Texas too) With this being said, I’m sure many of you are familiar with the ads for waterless or no-rinse products. In fact, there are several prod30 November

Optimum No Rinse Wash and Shine is somewhat unique, in that it contains polymers as well as other lubricants. The polymers bond to the paint and protect it during the wash, in addition to adding a great shine and water beading protection. The other lubricants coat the paint, creating a deep shine while even adding some UV protection. It’s also a multi-purpose product that serves as a rinseless wash, a quick detailer, and a clay lubricant, depending on how much water you add. So now grab a bucket, fill with two gallons of water, and add one ounce of Optimum No Rinse. Using a micro fiber wash mitt and two or three micro fiber towels, you are now ready to get started. I suggest starting top to bottom doing a section or panel at a time. Wash it and

dry it. Move on to the next section or panel, saving the wheels for last. And yes, in 20 minutes or less you will have a spotless car with an incredibly smooth finish, a finish that you can see yourself in! If it rains the water beads up like you just applied a fresh coat of carnauba wax. Remember those wheels I said save for last? Your wheels will no longer have that annoying brake dust building up so quickly. So next time you’re dreading dragging out the hose in this Texas heat, try one of the no-rinse products. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed. Now don’t misunderstand, you may not win a Concours, but you will have a finish that looks as good as the day it left the dealer. Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

D

riving your Porsche is certainly a regular theme of my Around the Bend musings each issue. This month has me reflecting on a derivation of a quote from Ferdinand Porsche: “Life itself is a drive, marked by a start and a finish. It is what we learn during the drive, and how we apply it, that determines whether our drive was worthwhile. Being a member of the Maverick Region affords each of us so many opportunities to regularly exercise our Porsche rides. At times, these are well organized performance driving events, while just as often, club social events like monthly lunches and the monthly evening event, give members a great reason to drive their club vehicle to gather with fellow members. You will also find individual club members posting impromptu opportunities for drives such as Route 455 north of Dallas or the Twisted Sisters south of Fort Worth, or even local coffee gatherings to see the latest Porsche acquisition of a member. There simply is no limit to the number of driving opportunities afforded to our Maverick Region. In all cases, contemplating the quote above hopefully gives you the sense that each drive in your Porsche is an occasion to be fully enjoyed. Further, each drive should build even greater anticipation for the next time you decide to exercise your Porsche! Just looking back on the months of September and October provides examples of hundreds of our members that participated in a very large number of events that included driving as the focus. September started with the seventh Autocross of this year. That was followed shortly by our second Time Trial event, with a club High Performance Driver Education (DE) event the very next weekend along with a PCA Tours drive that ended with parade laps at that DE event.

36 November

October featured even more club driving opportunities. The month started with our eighth club Autocross event, followed less than two weeks later by another PCA Tour - this one to Rancho Sereno - always an exciting and well-liked driving route. The next weekend featured yet another club DE event, with the last weekend of October featuring our club Halloween Gimmick Rally. The final day of October saw our ninth Autocross event of the season successfully completed. In addition to these focused driving events, your fellow Mav members enjoyed many drives associated with attending a multitude of social gatherings, both scheduled and impromptu. And, our most seasoned and competitive members will enjoy driving at the Club Race event at MSR on Nov. 12-13. Spectators are welcome to come out and experience the fastest driving venue our club offers. Finally, look ahead to major events such as the November PCA Palooza in Eureka Springs and the Treffen North American Hill Country coming next spring for extended driving opportunities. In every case, be sure to enjoy the drives in your Porsche from start to finish and make each ride worthwhile - even to the grocery store. Please consider sharing your driving adventures by writing an article for Slipstream and posting photos on the club Flickr stream!
