Shifting Gears:

Fall Activities are Around the Corner

By David Robertson, Region Vice President

O

ctober has arrived, and with it comes many opportunities within the club to drive your Porsche and meet fellow members. With the cooler weather comes competitive driving events like Autocross and Drivers’ Education, along with more leisurely driving events like our PCA Tour and a Rally. As always we have great social events, with lunches and even a Porsche Oktoberfest party this month (see the ad on page 23 for more info). If you have never attended a Gimmick Rally, you should try the one on Saturday, October 29. Even though it is a competitive event, the whole point of a Rally is just to have fun. You and your partner (a navigator is required!) will be given a set of landmarks to find, as in a scavenger hunt, and then off you go. Medals are given for the winners and a medal is even given for last place! After the Rally, everyone gets together for great food and drink and there will be lots of colorful stories from the day. The first weekend in November is the event formerly known as Founders’ Day, which we now call the Annual Celebration. This is going to be a great event this year at the NYLO hotel so you do not want to miss it. During the Annual Celebration we will have our Silent Auction, with all proceeds going to the Hope House, which is the main Maverick Region charity, so bid early and often. I always pick up some great items from this auction; these items are donated from the local Porsche dealerships and Porsche repair shops, as well as nonPorsche related items from other local businesses and individual club members. There really is something for everyone. We always need auction items, and keep in mind that all proceeds go to charity, so if you would like to donate something, please send an email to social@ mavpca.org. At the Annual Celebration we will also have our Photo Contest which has become very popular. This year will be the third annual edition of the contest, and it grows bigger every year. All are welcome to participate. See the ad in this issue of Slipstream for more information, or email photocontest@mavpca.org. Submissions need to be in by Saturday, October 15, so don’t delay!

The 2017 Maverick Region Officers Ballot is on page 11 of this issue. Please cast your vote! 2 October

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 October is a great month to get out and about, and I am sure to see many of you with convertible tops downand sunroofs open at one of our events, so enjoy the great weather and the twisty roads here in North Texas. MAV OF THE MONTH Bill Kruder has been a longtime member of the Maverick Region but just recently started attending events and getting involved with the club. He has jumped in with both feet by writing a great monthly series in Slipstream, and recently hopped right into a vacancy for the Advertising Chair with great enthusiasm and lots of ideas. Bill has already added greatly to both of these roles. It is volunteers like Bill that make the Maverick Region PCA such a great organization. Thanks Bill for your contribution to our Bill and Debi in Chi-Town this past summer club!

2016 Maverick Region Board - Officers and Chairs

President Jim Falgout president@mavpca.org

Jim joined Maverick Region in August, 2008. He drives a 2003 996, which is the third Porsche he has owned. Jim enjoys attending Maverick Region social and driving events.

Vice President David Robertson C 617-797-0516 vp@mavpca.org

David fell in love with the Porsche 911 when, as a child, he would have his parents stop by the old Forest Lane Porsche in Dallas so he could dream of someday owning one. He bought his first Porsche 911 in 2011. He and his wife Tracy enjoy being active members in the Maverick Region.

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821 secretary@mavpca.org

Wendy and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now 18. They own 3 Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2016 Cayman GT4.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 treasurer@mavpca.org

Richard joined Maverick Region in 2012 when he fulfilled a 30+ year dream to own his first (of many) 911, a 2009 Silver Carrera! Although fairly new to the club, he is excited about being more involved and meeting more Porsche fanatics!

Last Minute Substitution: By Carey Spreen

R

egion Vice President David Robertson, filling in for President Jim Falgout, began the meeting at 7:00 pm. David began with the Treasurer’s report. All told, the Region has just over $140,000 cash on hand as of the end of August. Treasurer Rich Solomon has made a final payment to MotorSport Ranch for the September Drivers’ Ed event, as well as an IRS filing payment, and has sent invoices to all Slipstream advertisers. He noted that we need to have a discussion about Hope Shelter proceeds for this Christmas, and that we have only received $1000 in charity lap proceeds from Hill Country Region, held during the May COTA Club Race/DE. We have not received any proceeds from the Club Race/DE event itself. David continued with the report from Membership Chair John Hamilton, stating that Region membership is at 2,577 (1,694 primary and 883 affiliate) members, down a bit from our all-time high of 2,582 last month. John says that we are still showing growth, and that the Internet photo frames that Bill Orr has set up at various locations in the Metroplex are helping already. David also gave us the report from Time Trial Chair Travis Howard, who tells us that the final Time Trial of 2016 will be held on Sunday, Sept 18, on the 1.3-mile course at MotorSport Ranch, and is almost full already. Slipstream Content Editor Carey Spreen noted that the Portal to Texas History group from University of North Texas, with whom the Region has contracted to digitize our complete archive of Slipstream, has taken delivery of the archive and has begun work on it. Concurrently, Ussery Printing has shown interest in creating PDFs of Slipstream for the previous 17 or so years, which would save the Region some money. Carey will continue to follow the status of the project. Calendar Boy Brendan Eagan assured us that the on-line calendar is up to date. Brendan is also looking for someone to replace him, so if you are interested, contact him at calendar@mavpca.org or let our

September Board Meeting

Volunteer Chair Jimmy Gallegos know at volunteers@mavpca.org. Safety Chair Joe McGlohen introduced incoming Safety Co-Chair Wayne Elliot. Wayne is a retired civil engineer and is excited to be able to fill a much-needed position in the club. Welcome Wayne! Joe noted that he would like to put on a fire school at MotorSport Ranch for corner workers and anyone else interested in race safety. Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho told us that there were about 120 attendees at the July Social at Hard Eight Barbecue in Coppell, while the August event at the Embassy Suites in Frisco had about 90 participants. September’s event, the F. Porsche birthday celebration, will have limited seating, and requires RSVPs. By contrast, the October Social, with an Oktoberfest theme, will be at Uncle Buck’s in Grapevine, where we’ll have a banquet room and a bartender all to ourselves! PCA Tours Chair Tom Martin told us that there are two tours remaining for 2016: the September 25 tour to MotorSport Ranch, and the October 15 tour to Rancho Sereno. For September, he is asking participants to bring a $25 Walmart gift card in exchange for driving ontrack parade laps. He has also found a caterer for the Rancho Sereno tour at a great per-person price. He and PCA Tours Co-Chair Bill Orr are working on the 2017 tour schedule now. Drivers’ Education Chair Chris Tabor delivered 100 $50 discount coupons to Tom, for distribution to the participants in the MotorSport Ranch tour, to encourage participation from members who are uncertain about entering a DE. Chris would like to implement a Track Night series for 2017. The format is not finalized, but could be a leadfollow program, with entrants following an instructor on track. Chris admitted that a two-day DE can be a big commitment for someone new to the sport, hence the idea for oneday or one-evening formats. He will need volunteer assistance with these events. Chris and Mark Schnoerr also discussed coming up with ways to involve Mavericks who own Cayennes and Macans, perhaps some-

September 7, 2016

thing off-road, or possibly a “how much will it hold” charity event. Lastly, Chris reported that the 2017 DE dates are set, all at MotorSport Ranch. Advertising Chair Bill Kruder reported that he is signing up new advertisers for Slipstream, and is working on attracting national advertisers as well. Bill is also comparing advertising rates with surrounding Zone 5 Regions to see if our rates are comparable. Raising rates would allow us to print an all-color Slipstream, which should be more attractive to advertisers as well as our readers. Slipstream Managing Editor Jim Hirsch advised that we are currently printing 1,900 copies per month. Advertising is still at roughly 55% of total content. As a reminder, Jim is always looking for potential cover photos, ideally in “portrait” (vertical) format, containing both people and Porsches. We are also looking for someone who can design and produce our event ads. Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr reviewed the August and September events. PCA members comprise 10 to 15% of the entrants, and Equipe Rapide likes having us there. For the September event, Bill Orr arranged for an ice cream truck to be present, calling it Cars & Cones, and it was so successful that the truck owner gave us a $75 reimbursement. Several members new to autocrossing showed up to watch, and Mark’s wife Sigrid was able to find competitors to give them rides around the course at speed. Most said that they would be back for the November event! There are two events in October, and the final event in November, called Guns & Hoses, will donate proceeds to charity, and will include the participation of various police and fire departments. Bill Orr reported that he has placed more Internet photo frames, including one at MotorSport Ranch, and is working on placing one at Porsche Plano. He is working with Charlie Davis on the existing Region Logo designs. David Robertson added that the Board will be voting on the final logo design at the October board meeting, and it will be unveiled at the Annual Celebration.

Goodie Store Chair Chris Flaugh noted that he has had several requests for Maverick Region license plate frames, and is looking into that. Volunteer Chair Jim Gallegos heard from a member who is interested in assisting with the PCA Tours program. Tom Martin welcomed the news, saying that it has been difficult lately finding enough volunteers to lead and “sweep” the tour groups. Jim also noted that more and more Mavericks (mostly new members) are using Facebook to learn about club activities. Social Co-Chair Phyllis Gallegos reminded us that the Annual Celebration will be held on November 5 at the NYLO Hotel in Irving, and that it will be a less formal event than when it was known as Founders’ Day. It will not be a formal sit-down dinner; it will be buffetstyle heavy hors d’oeuvres and conversation, rather than having a series of speakers. Phyllis and Tracy are looking for Silent Auction donors. We will also be requesting attendees to donate $25 Walmart gift cards for our charity, the Hope Shelter. Social Co-Chair Tracy Robertson congratulated Wendy Shoffit on her design of the Annual Celebration ad (page 17). She noted that Rally Co-Chair and everpresent photographer George Luxbacher has agreed to run the Photo Contest this year. George is looking for professional or otherwise qualified judges for the contest, so if you’d like to be a judge this year, contact George at rally@mavpca.org. David announced Bill Kruder as Mav of the Month for the excellent job he has done in working with Slipstream advertisers, and otherwise contributing to the club. Congratulations Bill! The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 pm.

Five Speed Chatter: By Ash Seidl-Staley

A

Holding It Steady

nyone can go fast, but the mark of a true driver lies in how he or she handles the speed. I encourage all to look up the YouTube video Ruf CTR “Yellow Bird” full laps on Nurburgring Nordshleife 1987 (Option Auto). Though dated, and somewhat long, it mesmerizes my Porsche soul. You might recognize the track and the iconic Yellow Bird, but I really hope you notice how the driver drives. The driver has no helmet, no fire gear, no roll cage, and is wearing penny loafers! Apart from thrilling my inner gearhead, this video shows just how versatile and agile Porsches truly are. It stands as proof that, if maintained at tip top condition, our cars can zip and zoom around any track, practically at any speed. Last month we discussed some of the low-cost options that you can utilize to boost the power output of your engine. This month I would like to focus on the steering and suspension. If you noticed the Ruf drivers’ hands, they were constantly in motion, keeping the car steady, even while screeching past motorcycles and what look like Citroens. First and foremost, the key to handling a car like this relies in the car’s stability. Tie rods, A-arms, shock absorbers, torsion bars, and strut assemblies all need to be locked in place. Worn or damaged bushings need to be replaced, and shocks need to retain their dampening characteristics. To add stability, or better yet rigidity, to your car, you can install a stabilizer bar onto either the rear or front suspension assembly. Used sway bars and stabilizers can run up to a few hundred dollars, and a new kit from Elephant racing or Weltmeister, which does come with everything you need in a nice little package, can easily double that. Strut tower braces and variously sized torsion bars can also be purchased. These typically go for under $200 and install easily.

10 October

To improve the handling of your Porsche, you can also choose to lower its stance. This can be accomplished by adjusting the bolt located on the front suspension, or one of the four bolts located on the rear radius arms (i.e., the spring plates connecting the trailing arm, shock assembly, and torsion bar together). Elephant Racing again offers a spring plate upgrade that is actually modeled after the 935 suspension, but it is not cheap. It is extremely important to note that adjusting the height of the vehicle, from any of the points described above, alters the toe-in alignment and camber specifications of the wheel. Height adjustments should be carefully executed, and a quick trip to get the wheels realigned is a must. In addition to realigning the wheels, it might be prudent to install a bump steer kit if your classic is void of one, as lowering the car without one might cause the wheel to jerk in your hands while driving on less than perfect roads. The choice of steering wheel, likewise, effects how one controls a vehicle. A true “Stig,” which I believe is the identity of the Ruf driver, wouldn’t care too much about a steering wheel, but some thrive with the subtle change. Lighter and smaller Momo-type wheels are great for racing; the classic 930S wheel for style; and the Prototipo wheels for both a vintage look and feel. Personally I lean towards the Momo, but stock wheels work just as well. Keeping our cars on the road, or, if we are lucky enough, on the track, is a must. Power and speed are significant and exhilarating, but control and stability are just as imperative. Equally important is the stopping power of brakes. Join me next time where we will dive into the world of brakes. Enjoy the video at http://bit.ly/RUFYellowBird, and as always: Wrench on Mavs!

fter last month’s conversation with Bob Hagestad, I thought we would switch gears and look for one of our newest members. As luck would have it, I ran into this couple at the Ferrari car show, of all places, a few months back. Since then, we have had the opportunity to talk over coffee while hanging out with our cars, either at Cars & Coffee (Plano) or some other random Saturday morning gathering. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you: Julia and Greg Cleath, 1988 944 and 1981 911SC owners, and members since 2016.

GC: Julia had a red 1987 924S; when I met her she had just bought it and I thought “Wow, this might just work out!” JC: Yes, I had found it in the “classifieds.” I mean the 924s were actually pretty reasonable back then. The funny thing was it was only my “summer” car. I mean with our winters I wasn’t about to drive it every day so, I had a winter car and a summer car. BK: So Julia, what made you start being a car person? JC: My dad was into cars. I was about four years old when I watched him pull a motor out of an old Chevy and put in a new one. He taught me to do an oil change on my own car and took the family on a vacation to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when I was young. The two all-time favorite cars he owned were his ‘72 Malibu, and his ‘90 Mustang, which he still has. BK: You’re both from Minneapolis? When did you meet? GC: Yes, we spent most of our lives there; didn’t move Greg and Julia Cleath with their pair of Porsches from there till about BK: So you guys are pretty new to the 2002. We met in 1989 and dated for club? about three months, and knew this JC: Well yes and no. This is acwas meant to be. Ok, she did have tually our second time around. But yes, I went the 12 October

civilian route, and to log the hours I needed, I went to Alaska for about eighteen months and was a “bush” pilot. BK: And what about now? GC: Today I fly for Southwest Airlines out of Love Field; I’ve been with them for about fifteen years now. BK: Did you guys move here from Minnesota? JC: No, we actually lived in Atlanta for about eleven years. After 9/11, Greg lost his job and something opened up there; it was a huge pay cut, but it kept him flying, and you do what you need to do. GC: It wasn’t till 2013 that I was transferred from Atlanta and we moved into the house in Frisco. BK: OK, let’s talk cars. After Julia’s 924, what was there? GC: Once we settled in Atlanta, we bought an ‘02 Boxster; this was in ‘05. We found a Carrera White one with Sand Beige interior up in Chicago. Funny, I did the research on it but I never saw it before our purchase. JC: Greg told me he found a car and said that all we have to do is pay $600 to have it shipped. I told him for $300 I would fly up there and drive it back for him. So that’s what I did. And yes he paid me (laughing)! BK: Something tells me there’s another yet? JC: Oh yes, we later bought a Basalt Black over Sand Beige 2010 Cayenne. The cool thing about that was the dealer in Atlanta would get “executive driven” Porsches from the North American office there, so we were able to get this one. GC: Not sure we can include the 2006 911 (997) S we had for a week; just wasn’t what we wanted, so we sold it. BK: When I first met you two this spring, you didn’t have any of these.

GC: We had an ‘09 Guards Red 911 (997) cabriolet; that was a fun car. We loved the top down but I really had the bug to get into something older, like an air-cooled. JC: At the same time I never forgot how much I loved my 924, so we decided to sell the cab and start searching for our “old” cars. BK: And what came first? JC: Hmmm, I guess I got my way, seeing how we found the Guards Red ‘88 944S first. GC: That was truly a barn find; we were looking and found one in Jacksboro. Truly sitting out there with a horse and donkey. BK: So then the search began for yours, Greg? GC: It did. I searched on line and found an ‘81 Guards Red Euro 911SC. The funny thing was that after researching it we discovered that it

had been brought into the states in about ‘85-‘86 through Minnesota, as a matter of fact on May 20, which is our son’s birthday. So we said this has to be the one. BK: So you went and picked it up? GC: No, I just bought it and

Julia and her two front-engined Porsches

shipped it not seeing it (laughing). But trust me, I did the research on it, and had it checked out, so not the riskiest thing I guess. BK: What made you join PCA again? JC: Well we are older now (laughing). Honestly we found the coffee group on Facebook and started attending some of those. Everyone kept asking if we were members of PCA so we thought, heck, guess we better join. GC: It’s been a lot of fun; we attended our first social at the Embassy Suites in Frisco and struck up some good conversations. It’s often said, and may even be overused, but once again it really is as much about the people as it is our cars. Not only did I make two good friends; Julia makes a wicked salsa and one heck of a good lunch.

PCA Tours Preview:

“Back in the Saddle Again”

By Tom Martin, PCA Tours Co-Chair

I

t’s time to saddle up your Porsches, pardners, and gear up for a return to Rancho Sereno; that bucolic venue set deep in lower Texoma, where men are men and sheep are nervous. Nestled in the pastoral Red River Valley, Rancho Sereno is a 165-acre private ranch and wildlife preserve, serving primarily as a successful breeding ground for performance “reining” horses. The October PCA Tour ventures out to the Ranch later this month on Saturday, October 15. Tour drivers will meet at the campus of Grayson College, located at 1455 West Van Alstyne Parkway, in Van Alstyne. The Tour starts at 10:00 am; we should arrive at our destination in Whitesboro shortly after high noon. This Tour’s 86.1-mile route incorporates several miles of exhilarating twisties, including a good portion of FM 455, a recently repaved stretch of asphalt that has attained almost cult status amongst sports car enthusiasts, motorcyclists, and bicyclists. Upon our arrival at the Ranch, a catered lunch awaits us, courtesy of Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. Fare includes three BBQ meats, four sides, a relish tray, rolls, and iced tea. Cost is $15.00 per person, which must be

16 October

prepaid. The Maverick Region enlists the Punchbowl evite system to determine individual participation and to collect funds in advance. If you plan on attending the Tour, it is imperative that you RSVP before the Tour. “How do I do that?” you ask. Easy. Just complete the Punchbowl evite at http://bit.ly/RanchoSereno and answer the questions presented about attendance and participation in lunch. Then contribute $15.00 per person to pay for the BBQ lunch. When you RSVP, it gives us accurate headcounts to supply to the proprietors of the destination and the caterer. Plus, three days before the Tour, you will receive an e-mail with the following attachments: a Garmin .gdb file of the route, a route overview, and turn-by-turn instructions. As always, attendees are not required to participate in any of the destination’s offerings, so you may head straight home after the Tour on your own route. And don’t forget, if you wish to partake of the BBQ lunch at the Ranch, please be sure to prepay through the Punchbowl website. Hope to see you and your Porsche on the Tour!

2016 Autocross Series: By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

August and September Recaps

Photos by Andrew Barber and Bill Orr

T

here have been two more Autocross events since our last report: August 14 and September 4, both taking place at Lone Star Park. The August 14 event had a surprise entrant driving a GT4: Steve Krysil, Regional Manager of Porsche Cars North America. Although we made him work for it, he squeaked by for top Porsche time of the day and top payout at the event. He immediately donated his winnings to the end-of-year Guns and Hoses Challenge Charity event. Thank you Steve! Over 100 entrants participated, and the weather gods held off on the rain. Porsche class results are posted in this issue. The September 4 Labor Day Sunday event was a combined Autocross and Social gathering with a Porsche Club-organized Cars and Cones Ice Cream Social, available to participants and spectators alike. In addition to some new entries in the Autocross, the ice cream truck brought club members out to picnic under the trees and enjoy the action on the course. It was our first pass at this combined event activity at a combined PCA/Equipe Rapide Autocross. Bill Orr worked hard the week before the event to make announcements, post on social media and get e-mails out to all members.

We had some drive-by Porsches, some new participants, and some Maverick Region spectators showing off their beautiful cars. When a few expressed interest in learning more about it, Sigrid got them into loaner helmets and arranged ride along adventures for most of the PCA spectators. Since the Porsches ran in the first heat, these rides were in Corvettes, BMWs, Vipers, and even a Mini Cooper. Watching looks interesting, but riding with a skilled driver really shows what it is all about out there. Results for the September Porsche Classes can be found in this issue, and Bill Orr provided some great photos, with many also posted in social media after the event. The schedule and locations of the last three events are also listed in this issue. The October 2 and 30 events will be at the Burleson High School Stadium parking lot, while the last event, the Guns and Hoses Charity fundraiser (yes, three or four local Police departments will be competing in identically-prepared police vehicles for awards during this one) will be back at Lone Star Park on November 13, where we are working to coordinate a Cars and Coffee Porsche Club activity as well. Watch for announcements on these.

We will once again have five categories of photos – all must be Porsche or PCA related: • Portraits: Portraits of cars – an individual car or a group! • Motorsports: Car(s) in motion involved in driving events. • People: Individuals at PCA events; showing a car or cars is optional. • The PCA Experience: Events, objects, or activities connecting the members of PCA to their history and/or their cultural heritage; photographs that tell us what it means to be a PCA member. • Artistic: Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or special effects.

Maverick Photo Contest

Photos must have been shot since January 1, 2015 (21+ months of photos to choose from!). Each photographer may submit two photos, but only one photo may be submitted in any one category, and you must specify the category for each of your photos. (We would like to take more but we simply can’t handle the number of submittals that would bring!) Judging will be done by a group of impartial judges without knowledge of the entrant – your photo will speak for itself! Six Official winners will be selected, one for each category, and a separate Grand Prize winner. In addition, we will have People’s Choice voting at the Annual Celebration – see what other Porsche enthusiasts think about your photos! Three People’s Choice winners will be announced without regard to category. For more details, contest rules, and submittal information, please email photocontest@mavpca.org – we look forward to your entries! All photos must be received by Saturday, October 15, to be eligible for judging.

The Route Less Traveled: By Bill Bradley

M

y wife Judy recently purchased a new Honda Odyssey. It came with every imaginable option, sixteen computers to run the electronic gismos, but, regrettably, no navigation system. So I gave her my Garmin, which came with lifetime map updates and was a cinch to operate. This forced me to actually use the Navi in my 2006 911. For the uninitiated, operating instructions for this aged Navi take up many pages of arcana deep inside the user’s manual. This is truly something that belongs in the core curriculum of Hogwarts University. My Carrera was not new when I purchased her. This meant pre-owned, high end car lot jargon for expensive used vehicles. She’d had two previous owners before I saw her in the back row, looking at me with those puppy dog “buy me” headlight eyes of hers. Before giving up my Garmin to help the Odyssey find its way around town, I had used it to download the turn-by-turn directions for the Sunday (quixotically usually held on Saturday) drives. Previous to learning the somewhat kludgy (to me anyway) download method for the Garmin, I had just tagged along, making certain in get in the middle of my drive group before we started off. This way, if I got lost, I would not be alone. Eventually our drive leader would backtrack to find us or we would pass another group, usually passing us in the opposite direction. I have been experimenting with the Navi in my 911. Keep in mind my car is ten-plus years old. The first destination I entered were routes for which I was already familiar: the Spring Creek BBQ and Kincaid’s Café lunches. Last week, Sean Ratts was kind enough to repair the power cord on a set of dog clippers for us. I should mention that Judy is a long-time Irish Setter breeder, show person, and AKC judge. I got Sean’s address in Denton, entered it in the Navi, and off I went, secure in the knowledge that anything Dr. Porsche had a hand in would have impeccable manners. I headed up I-35E, crossed the Lewisville Lake Bridge, and followed directions to Seans’ house. It worked flawlessly. Sean and I exchanged pleasantries. We admired each other’s cars. I took the repaired power cord, thanked him profusely, and left. It was hot, so I put the top up and then selected Home on the Navi. (I did mention this car is ten-plus years old, didn’t I?) During this time span a certain amount of Teutonic impishness has found its way to into the Navi’s circuitry. I was not to return to Flower Mound over the Lake Lewisville Bridge. No, now I was heading west into the country. I was in no hurry. I would enjoy the ride. 30 October

The Not-So-Savvy Navi

Images Courtesy of the Author

And enjoy the ride I did. Out through the country on winding roads, past gorgeous homes with manicured lawns and tall trees. I was in horse country. Thanks to my Porsche navigation, circa 2006 ten-plus-year-old Navi, I was not in bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-35E, but instead enjoying the scenery while “sports-wagening” (my linguistic invention pronounced with the German “v”) along. Apologies to Michael Vatter here. I came out on the western edge of Flower Mound. I switched off the Navi. No need for it, as I knew the way home from here. My only problem was going to be getting my Garmin back for the turn-by-turn downloads for the Saturday/Sunday drives. There is debate as to adding a factory navigation system to the Odyssey. But that is another story.

ou joined us on our famous Drive for the Spirits last Halloween and our Easter Egg Hunt Road Rally earlier this year. Now join us again this Halloween season on Saturday, October 29 at 9 am for our second annual Halloween Gimmick Rally, this year running as the Ride with the Ghouls! The 60-mile gimmick rally will be built around ghoulish puzzles and pictures – join us and attempt to delve into the tortured, demented, devious and diabolical minds of your Rallymeisters! Route directions won’t be too complicated, and we promise you won’t get too lost! Last year about 2/3 of the participants came in appropriate festive attire, and we hope to make it 100% this year!! Watch the Maverick Region website for preregistration instructions. All registered participants will get a set of General Instructions before the rally to help avoid the ghouls (and glitches) on rally day. Our starting point will be in Frisco and we plan to end at Fortunata Winery in Aubrey for scary ghost tales, a cup of witches’ brew, and some brick oven pizza. See you then!!! Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

A

s Sir Stirling Moss is quoted: “It is necessary to relax your muscles when you can. Relaxing your brain can be fatal.” Although he was obviously talking about his success in endurance races, his thought applies equally well to much of what we do in our everyday lives. While “thinking hard” can at times push our bodies into tenseness, it’s important to build the skill of being able to relax and unwind those body extremities all the while keeping our strong focus on the task ahead of us. A good way to practice that skill is to take photographs, especially with the fall colors now. Consider this your invitation to get out with your fancy camera or simply your fancy phone and use your brain muscle to compose what you feel could be a contest winning picture. Speaking of brilliant photos of magnificent Porsche cars, our August cover featuring the 1958 Speedster incorrectly identified the owner. That beautiful car actually is under the ownership of Chuck Lawson. This is a roundabout way of inviting you to participate in our third annual club photo contest. This has be-

come a popular activity as part of our Annual Celebration with photos displayed for member viewing during that event. Details can be found on page 28 in this issue. Remember that the deadline is fast approaching, so do not “relax your muscles” too much, but have your brain working overtime to pick out a location for your perfect photo opportunity. Also occuring in the month of October is our Maverick Region Officers election. All members have the right to cast your vote, either for a nominated candidate or a write-in person of your choice. The ballot is found on page 11. You can mail the ballot as per the instructions or bring it with you to the Annual Celebration. The results of the election will be announced that evening. As usual, October turns out to be our busiest month in terms of club activities. Please take some time to review our club calendar on page 1 in this issue, or go online to mav.pca.org to view the calendar and pick one or two events to attend and spend some time with fellow Maverick members. Check out our Facebook page for additional “impromptu” gatherings too.
