SPROCKETS: Getting to Know You By David Robertson, Region President

Fall is upon us and hopefully that means cooler temperatures. It also means that our club is in full swing with lots of great events for you to attend. If you have attended a Maverick event, I don’t need to tell you how much fun we have and what great people you will meet. For those of you who haven’t attended one of our many events, or if you that haven’t been out with us in a while, there has never been a better time to come out and see what all of the buzz is about. We really do have something for everyone, and if you don’t know where to start, you might want to come out to a Mavs & Mochas. This event is a monthly casual gathering of some of the greatest cars you have ever seen! Mavs & Mochas is a come-and-go-as-you-like gathering of Porsches where everyone is very eager to answer all of your questions about a specific Porsche you may be fascinated with, or about any of our other events. Once you realize what a great group we have, you will want to try something else as soon as you can. Just show up and enjoy! Make sure you are subscribed to our social media pages as well. Along with the official events you will find on our calendar there are always impromptu gatherings to make sure that a week doesn’t go by without a way for us to get together. Another great way to get involved is to volunteer and help us put on one of these great events. Volunteering is a great way to meet others in the club and really learn what the Maverick Region is all about. Send an email to volunteers@mavpca.org and we can line you up with an event that matches your interest.

The enthusiasm and passion that our volunteers put into organizing our many activities makes the Maverick Region one of the best. I hope to see you this month out on the road!

MAVS OF THE MONTH: Monthly Social co-chairs Clark Randall and Vanessa Fernandes Vanessa and Clark stepped into the Monthly Social Chair role last year and they have done an amazing job organizing our monthly Happy Hour/ 2 October

Dinner Socials. Over the past few years, our monthly socials have grown to a size that makes organizing them somewhat challenging at times. The planning and coordination that Clark and Vanessa put into these events is phenomenal. They work very hard, not only to find great venues, but also ones that can host the number of Maverick members that enjoy attending. If you haven’t attended a Happy Hour/Dinner Social, you are missing out on one of our most popular events. Thank you Vanessa and Clark for everything you do to make these events so enjoyable for our members!

Farm Road 4: A Tribute Driving Tour for Voy “Mitch” Mitchell By Mark Pitarresi, Tours Co-Chair It is my pleasure to present our sixth and final Maverick Driving Tour for 2018. This driving tour is for the pure driving enthusiast and will be unlike any driving tour our region has done in years! The route has everything one would want on a country drive, Porsche Style. Participants will experience long straights, wide open scenic views, twisties, blind corners, and elevation changes. This is prime Texas ranch area my friends! Many of you know Mitch Mitchell and how he was involved with our region’s tour program. When I started with our program it got a little overwhelming in the beginning. Mitch seemed to pick up on this and had a great way of defusing things that seemed stressful.

Mitch was one of those guys that anyone could have a great conversation with. Every time I saw Mitch at a PCA event he was surrounded by friends, and joining in on the conversations was a pleasure.

He also did a lot of drives in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico. To quote John Glover, “Mitch was part of a unique bunch of friends who like to drive fast”. This group

6 October

of friends went on to create the baseline of what we know today as the Maverick Region Tours Program. Mitch’s favorite route in our area was Farm Road 4. As a tribute, we have chosen it for our last driving tour this year. In addition to Bill Kruder’s article in this issue of Slipstream (page 12), there are two more I would like to mention that were about Mitch. They can be found in the September 2015 (pages 18-19) and October 2015 (pages 16-17) issues of Slipstream. Electronic copies can be found at mav.pca. org/Newsletter/newsletter_2015.asp . The route will begin at 10 am on Sunday, November 4 at Jacksboro Middle School, 812 W Belknap St., Jacksboro, TX 76458. The route is about two hours and 83 miles long. At the time this article was written there was no construction on this route. The tour includes a rest stop, and ends with a picnic lunch at the square in Granbury. Bring a picnic lunch and a chair. Alternatively there are also several restaurants in the area to choose from. You must register for the tour at http://mav.pca.org/ Events/Tours/. We have two classes on our tours. Choose Vintage Class for a more relaxed scenic tour, or Modern Class for the same type of tour that we have provided in the past. Whichever class you choose it is your decision, no matter the type of Porsche you drive. After registration, and three days before the tour, we will send you all the information you need to participate. We hand out packets the day of the tour with all the information as well. The Drivers’ Briefing will begin at 10 am so please arrive early so that you are signed in on time. Most tour attendees arrive early to meet new friends and socialize with familiar faces. Arriving early also helps our volunteers get everyone signed in on time to keep the tour on schedule. No special navigation will be needed. Our Group Leaders will be familiar with the route and will guide each group of 14 cars or less in their group on the route. If you have any questions about the event please email tours@mavpca.org.

4th Annual Halloween Gimmick Rally: HHRRR By George Luxbacher and Don Sebert, Region Rally Co-Chairs Have you done one of our gimmick rallies yet? If not, you are missing one of the most enjoyable Maverick activities available! Picture a leisurely drive through the countryside, looking for the location of some unique and interesting pictures we have provided, and answering a few somewhat challenging questions based on landmarks you pass. The driver drives, the navigator (and passengers) navigate(s), both look for the pictures and answer questions, and there is bliss in the car – at

least that’s how we think it works. Our participants have noted that there may be occasional disagreements, but we hope they are few and far between! Our next gimmick rally, the Halloween Hair-Raising Road Rally, or HHRRR, is scheduled for Saturday, November 3 at 9 am. Our start location will be the former Gander Mountain store parking lot at the intersection of the North Dallas Tollway and Eldorado (12277 Dallas Parkway) in Frisco. We will be travelling through Collin, Denton, and Tarrant Counties for a pleasant 65-mile drive.

Our Easter rally was plagued with a freezing start, but the ghosts, goblins, and witches have promised to be kinder to us than the Easter Bunny was, so we are forecasting a warm, sunny day, perfect for top-down driving!

Registration opens at 9 am, driver’s meeting at 9:30, and first car out at 9:45. Every car must have a driver and a navigator at a minimum; additional passengers are fine, but just know that passengers often hurt rather than improve your score. We often get a few singles that show up and combine on race day as a team, so if you can’t find a navigator, feel free to come on out as well. We will have awards for first, second, and third place finishers, as well as the coveted DLBF award (Dead Last But Finished – you tried and there is no way to go other than up!). Since this is a Halloween rally, we encourage all to come out in costume and we will have costume awards based on People’s Choice. There are rest stops 10 October

pphotos by Bill Orr

available on the route, and nothing beats seeing the looks you get as you exit your Porsche in a knight or werewolf costume! While we will have primarily Porsches at the rally, if yours is otherwise “indisposed,” feel free to join us in any vehicle – we don’t want the Mavs to miss this opportunity! Interested in putting on a gimmick rally in areas other than north Dallas? We are looking for volunteers to develop routes and pull together rallies in areas we haven’t been to in a while. We are planning to hold a rally school this winter to discuss types of rallies and the planning steps that are required. If you are interested, please email us at rally@mavpca.org and we will provide further details. We look forward to seeing you on November 3rd.

Midweek DE: MotorSport Ranch in Cresson By Mark Pitarresi, Tours Co-Chair

Wednesday, July 18 was a day that went into the record books. The temperature was 109 degrees at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. It was a record high temperature for that date by three degrees. It also happened to be the date in which our Maverick Region added to our High Performance Drivers’ Education program by holding our first one-day event; our normal HPDE events are two or three days. With temperatures that high, one would think it would have scared away attendees, but not for the Maverick Region! Several people on the wait list were also on site, hoping that there would be some no-shows so they could participate.

With just a slight breeze, you could hear the sounds of crackling plastic water bottles, torque wrench clicks, and the air being let out of tires as attendees were in preparation.

I got to meet several advanced drivers that were happy to give tips for the track. One thing I have noticed being a member of the Maverick Region is that our members are some of the friendliest people I have ever met, of any organization! At the Drivers’ Meeting, DE Chair Chris Tabor did a slide show presentation and cautioned everyone with safety tips. Dr. Jeff Komenda, a new Instructor who also happens to be a medic, then talked to everyone about the symptoms of heat exhaustion and gave prevention tips. As the Drivers’ Meeting came to

photos provided by author

an end, Chris Tabor talked about Park Place Porsche and how they had a tent and mechanics to help if anyone had problems with their cars. Park Place donated this service to the event. It was now time to get on the track. As we returned to our cars, the instructors introduced themselves to everyone, looked over the cars, and helped with tire pressure adjustments. I already had a goal for this event as it was my second HPDE. My goals were to have better awareness of the track

and other cars. I focused on looking where I wanted the car to go, scanning my surroundings using peripheral vision. After the last on-track session, all of the attendees, volunteers, and track workers were invited to an informal social gathering, for which food and beverages were provided. Everyone had a smile on their face as they shared highlights of the day, and as we Mavericks like to use as our club motto: it’s all about Driving Friendships!

Coffee Cars & Conversation By Bill Kruder This month I would like to reminisce with you about a very special friend we recently lost. When I met him, he was already battling cancer; frankly, if I knew him healthy, I don’t think I could have kept up with him. We had a chance meeting a couple years ago at a Porsche Cars & Coffee on a cold blustery day in Addison as he drove by while the rest of us were standing in the drizzle. Since then I would see him out with us occasionally, always with a huge smile on his face! This might have been due to his 2015 Pure Whiteon-Espresso Turbo S. In more

photos by Jim Hirsch and the Author

Voy “Mitch” and Marie (MA-ree) Mitchell, owner 2015 911 Turbo S, founding member of PCA West Germany Region in 1963 (disbanded in 2008) Bill Kruder: Ok, I have to ask: where is the name Voy from? Sounds like it’s of a European decent? Mitch Mitchell: Oh no. Don’t think my mom had any idea of where the name might have originated but in those days everyone had two names and I guess she liked Voy Jerome so that’s what I was called. BK: Can’t say I have ever met a Voy before. Mitch: Well I hadn’t either until I went into the service and met another; he was an officer so we didn’t really speak until about 5-6 years ago. I was able to look him up and we finally spoke. BK: So what branch of the military were you in? Did you stay in long? Mitch: I was in the Air Force for 20 plus years; retired as a Master Sergeant in 1978. BK: After you retired what did you do? Mitch: I got a job with H-E-B in the meat processing plant, on what we would call today the IT side of things.

recent months I, and occasionally a couple others, would meet him up on the Celina Square for coffee and donuts. His family said this meant the world to him; heck it meant the world to us to be able to sit and listen to his stories. He not only had stories but he brought pictures, old Panoramas from the ‘60’s, and racing programs from some of the best circuits in Europe. So here is my “conversation” that first appeared in June 2017: 12 October

BK: So you were kind of an IT guy in the Air Force? Mitch: No, I just kind of said I could do it and learned. We used a new system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), who at that time was a leader in what was then called “MiniComputers.” Taking courses thru the GI Bill helped fill in the areas I couldn’t learn on my own. BK: And are you from here? Mitch: No, I grew up in a small oil patch town called Eldorado, Texas about 45 miles south of San Angelo. Our last assignment found us in San Antonio and we lived there for about 28 years, and in 2004 moved to Celina. BK: So I understand you two just celebrated a milestone?

Marie: Yes we did! In December we had our 50th wedding anniversary. BK: Where did you two meet? With your accent you are not from “these parts”? Marie: I’m from Ireland, but as it turned out I was going to nursing school near London, and Mitch was stationed near London. Mitch: I was stationed at RAF Chicksands, about 50 miles north of London. A friend I knew from assignment in Germany threw a party so that I could meet some girls, and Marie was there. This was February of 1966, and we married in December of 1966. BK: Wow! That must have been a whirlwind relationship. Marie: I guess you could say that; we both worked crazy shifts too. When I was working nights Mitch would be working days and vice versa so we hardly saw each other. Mitch: I think we probably spent the equivalent of two weeks together in all that time from meeting to getting married. BK: Ok so let’s talk cars. How did you get interested in Porsches? Mitch: Well I was stationed in Siegelbach, West Germany in about 1962 and a good friend had a 62-63 356 1600 Super cab. Together we would hit all the Grand Prix tracks and I guess that just hooked me. BK: And what was your first then? Mitch: Well before I bought my first, in 1963 I bought a VW 1200 Beetle, and drove it for about six months. I sold it and saved up so I could buy a 356. BK: How did that work out? Mitch: Good. I saved enough money and put down $200 on a 1964 Signal Red 356C coupe. As I recall I think they stickered at about $3600, which was a huge sum for a 22 yearold Staff Sergeant, but heck, I was single. So in October 1963 I took the train to the factory in Stuttgart to take delivery of my new coupe. After a tour of the factory I was off on my journey.

BK: How long did you have it? Mitch: Well I had it for about two years, driving it all over West Germany, and shipped it back to the states, selling it in 1965 I believe. BK: I understand you tracked the car down in later years? Mitch: I did. That car represented a special time, and to this day I’ve always admired the 356. It changed hands several times over the years and even spent time in San Antonio; currently it’s in Long Island. BK: And what was next? Mitch: Well, we had a pretty big gap between our first and second Porsches. It wasn’t until 2014 that we bought our second, and that was a 2007 Carrara White on Black Boxster. We took that out on several Sunday Drives (now Tours), and after driving it several months, something with the engine just wasn’t right. We had Al Zim check it out and decided before we put any money in it we would get rid of it. Marie: This is where it gets interesting (she laughs) . . .

BK: And how’s that? Mitch: One day I traded it in at Park Place for a 2015 Carrara White Metallic on Black Boxster. Marie: He leaves in one and comes back in another; it’s white and black looked nearly the same to me (she laughs)! BK: And? Mitch: The 2015 was fun but just not fast enough for what I wanted as we took more drives . . . there was a “need for speed” happening. So one day I traded it for a 2014 Carrera S, Pure White on Black again.

Marie: I’ve gotten pretty used to a white and black Porsche in the garage! BK: But this isn’t what you are driving today? Mitch: No, I was on a drive and the guys kidded me that there was a turbo S in Austin available, knowing that I had a “need for speed.” So last November I picked up the Pure White on Espresso Turbo S down in Austin. Marie: Now this one I noticed (laughing). It has such a lovely interior color and matching top. BK: And Marie all the time you were really ok with all these cars coming and going? Marie: Oh yes, Mitch has always been such a good provider, husband, and father! He deserves this and more. And once again to think that after a few chance meetings I would uncover yet another great personal story of a guy, his girl of 50-plus years and a handful of “white” cars. Maverick Marktpreis: Porsche Values by Peter Wen The final air-cooled 911 generation, Type 993, was produced from ’95 to ’98. It was loved by the public and journalists alike upon introduction. The book “Porsche 993 - Essential Companion” refers to the 993 as the “King of Porsche.” With its classic Porsche good looks and modern performance, it is one of the best and most desirable 911 generations today. It is no wonder that 993 is valued higher than the 964 generation it replaced and the 996 generation that followed.

This month, we highlight the recent auction results of 993 Coupe and Cabriolet base models. After a 50% gain from ‘13 to ‘16, their values have declined by about 15% the last couple of years. A total of 23,127 Coupe and 15,499 Cabriolets were produced. Excellence magazine’s Porsche Buyer’s Guide offered these price ranges: Coupe (‘95-‘97) - $45,000-$60,000 Cabriolet (’95-‘97) - $45,000-$60,000

Tradition is a commitment. Without our tradition and without our core values, we would not be where we are today. We plan to uphold the standard of technologitechnical excellence set by Ferry Porsche well into the future. Intelligent dynamic mobility has a great future ahead of it. And we have the solid technologi cal expertise, creative employees and unique team spirit to be involved. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate – even in another 70 years. The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born. The Type 356 turned Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car into a reality. “His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the Reprebrand to this day”, said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, at yesterday’s New Year Reception at the Porsche Museum. Repre sentatives from the state of Baden-Württemberg as well as from the city of Stuttgart and the worlds of politics, economics and society, joined Porsche to celebrate the beginning of its anniversary year with the slogan “70 years of the Porsche sports car.

Commentary from the Left Seat: Brand Loyalty By Robert Turner Brand loyalty. What every company spends untold dollars working to create. They build the essence of their brand around it. Really, they love this concept. Why? Big profits. It can be status symbols like Louis Vuitton or Tory Burch, or something simple like your basic “double no-whip-no-foam, skinny pumpkin latte” from Starbucks that you always order. We love what we love. So how far does brand loyalty take us? How about the never ending Ford versus Chevy or Chevy versus Mopar battle and all the possible permutations therein? There are some folks that swear by Toyota or Honda and will buy nothing else. Ever try having an automotive conversation with any of these people? Take a Ford guy for instance: “Don’t even get me talking about Chevy, because you know, those cars suck.” Personally I find those people very open minded, as long as you stick to how great Ford products and how sucky Chevy products are, that is. This is just an example; I’m not picking on anyone here. Not me. So do German cars fall into this brand loyalty trap? Heck yes! BMW guys? Check. Mercedes guys? Check. Audi guys? Ah, I think you get it—check please! And Porsche guys? Well we are probably the worst, at least when it comes to being brand diehards. Come on, as a group we are so loyal to our brand we even get into sub categories of brand fanaticism – as in air-cooled versus water pumpers, or all fifty-three “924 guys” versus everyone else.

So does that apply to you? Hmmm. You are reading this in a Porsche Club magazine right? And me? What do you think? Hate to pigeon hole myself into any particular category, but I gotta be honest with myself here; yes I am a Porsche-brand geek. Says so right on the shirt I am wearing right now, writing this piece: Drivers Education February 2003, Maverick Region PCA. OK, maybe the shirt is a bit threadbare but I love it. Yeah, guilty as charged. My own Porsche adventure started early with a really terrible 914 I drove in college. It was an awful car, and taken as a singular ownership event, should have scared most people (namely me) away from the Porsche brand forever. But then something magic happened. It was 1990 and I was recently married. So one Saturday morning, as my bride and I read the local newspapers— just to set the stage here, my wife loves to read the paper cover to cover, and still does—she looked up from her paper and asked: “Is $14,000 for a 1987 Porsche 944S with low miles a good deal?” (Remember – this is 1990 money we are talking about here.) I put down my section of the paper. She had just totally captured my attention. Brand loyalty was about to strike again! And a rather large rabbit hole had just magically popped into existence, right in the very fabric of my living room. Brand loyalty had just made its presence felt in the Turner household big time. And on that exhaust note, see you next time.

Your mind’s been racing. Catch up. Decades of dreaming, fulfilled instantaneously. The iconic 911 Carrera. Legendary handling, immediate power, and decades of motorsport heritage. It is the full measure of a sports car. Found only in a Porsche. Porsche. There is no substitute.

The 911 Carrera.

Maverick Partner Appreciation By Landon Stogner

As the saying goes, “I couldn’t have done it without you.” That surely holds true with all of the events we do, whether it’s driving tours and rallies, drivers’ education, tech sessions, or monthly dinners and coffee socials. None of those events would be a success without the teamwork of our club volunteers and advertising partners. To give our appreciation for all of the hard work throughout the year, we held our First Annual Maverick Partner Appreciation Celebration. Thanks again to one of our sponsors, Park Place Porsche, for being gracious enough to open up their Dallas dealership for this first event, which allowed our Maverick Region Board to play host to a casual buffet breakfast. We had 50 attendees from our group of 73 volunteers and 36 advertisers join us Saturday, September 15 for a country style Above: President David Robertson says a few words of appreciation, Jack Griffin with BJ Harvey, Tours Volunteer, Bill Kruder breakfast which included all the with Scott Oakwood, Debi and Bill Kruder with Patrick Huston Park Place Porsche Dallas General Manager. Autocross Event 6: Mirrorcross at Mineral Wells By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

A nice overcast day instead of the showers we were having all week greeted 85 participants for Autocross Championship Series Event #7 at the rolling Lone Star Park location. It was nice to be back in town and at a favorite site. A huge circus tent consumed a quarter of the lot but the expert crew were able to lay out an exciting course with many elevation changes. Amir El-Baghdady got some expert rear axle and suspension advice so his 944 S2 Cabriolet problems were solved. He was putting in some terrific times in class P1. The Wong Brothers, Ronald and Hubert, brought out their 997s again and were going after classes P2 and P3 wins. In class P2, Alex Tambert brought his new Cayman S out for himself and Brett Durham to wear out some old tires that came on the car, taking the top spots in class. In P3, Owen Coulman finally took the heat-cycled-out R-compound tires off his car to move back into P3. We

also had two new drivers in this class: DE participants out for their first Autocross, daughter and father, Kristyn and Bert Starr. Kristyn was paying attention and made great strides. She was already closing in on Owen and could keep him honest if she stays at it. Father Bert was flying right away and got lots of in car instruction as well as ride-alongs that helped a lot. Class P4 was the Mayo 911S vs the Schnoerr 914 2.0 with two drivers in each car. Sigrid had the class covered and was about to skirt both Ed and Mark after morning runs. A final banzai run put Mark first in class. Father Carey and daughter Geneva Spreen brought the family VW GTI to this event instead of the usual 924S or 911SC. Good to see them taking on the regulars From top: Kristyn Starr 997S, out there. Mark Schnoerr drifting 914, Owen was first quick Bert Starr being coached by performance index Porsche, Owen Coulman in his 991 followed by Mark and Sigrid in the family 914. Kristyn and Sigrid both were in the top five women performance index at this event. Watch the calendar for the dates of the last three events and join us at Lone Star Park. Mavs & Mochas: Texas Harley Davidson By Bill Bradley

photos by Bill Middleton

Rain, and lots of it, did not deter the Porsche faithful from making the trip to Bedford, TX for a Mavs and Mochas hosted by Texas Harley Davidson. The event, which as sponsored by Park Place Porsche, showcased Porsches of the 1980’s. A 928SC Carrera and a 968 were among the nearly 60 Porsches in attendance. Park Place Porsche furnished a Panamera Tourismo loaner, while Texas Harley Davidson provided the Felix coffee truck. Kudos, too, to the cone squad who assisted in getting everybody safely parked. No small feat for reverse parking in heavy overcast. This was the second Maverick event hosted by Texas Harley Davidson. This time the owner understandably kept his Porsche Carrera GT at home high and dry. For those who have not been to Texas Harley Davidson, and those of you heretically uninterested the motorcycles, it is still well worth the trip. Above: Do you think this conversation has anything to do with the weather? Right: Panamera Sport Tourismo furnished by Park Place Porsche. Bill Orr gave it two thumbs up.

MSR DE: First Time on a Racetrack By Joann Talty Ever find yourself equally frightened and excited about something? That described me before my first DE day at MotorSport Ranch on July 18. My fear had nothing to do with my ability, or admittedly being a female with limited car knowledge, but rather damaging my daily driver and having a prolonged period of discomfort from wearing a heavy helmet. Our day began about 1:00 pm under cover in 100+ degree temperatures. I tightened my lug nuts, inflated my tires, attached my tow hook, and emptied my car of its minimal contents, including floor mats. At the counter inside, I picked up a white helmet I reserved that thankfully came with a white knit balaclava. Upstairs, we registered; signed waivers; picked up the course map, schedule, sticker and checklist; and waited for the driver’s meeting to begin. Both Maverick Region’s first weekday event and one-day High-Performance Driver Education (HPDE) event, DE Chair Chris Tabor told us we’d be driving the 1.7-mile counterclockwise version of the track. He presented a slideshow of flags with their meanings and shared safety tips. With safety the number one priority, followed by fun, he announced their club record of no multi-vehicle collisions. Dr. Jeff Komenda shared with us the importance of hydrating, suggesting bananas and orange juice to keep levels of potassium up. The experienced solo drivers hit the track first, while we novices attended a meeting with instructor Mike Brodigan downstairs. He dove into the nitty-gritty of what we’d be learning that afternoon: 1) the best possible positions to be in on the track; 2) inputs or maneuvers such as turning and braking; and 3) awareness – everything other than driving. Three goals for the day included safety; driving as fast as skills, car, and desire allowed; and fun. Three 20 to 25-minute track sessions were scheduled for the afternoon, followed by a social. In the two novice groups, only seven or eight drivers with instructors drove the track at the same time. The small group made me very comfortable. In Pat’s experience, groups typically have 12-15 cars. The first session was at street speeds without helmets. Mike drove the first three laps and I drove the second three. He told me I’d be driving it entirely in third gear. Huh? I have a manual and I don’t have to shift? Weird. It looked easy enough. Look far ahead, he told me, and if I turn my head rather than just my eyes in the direction of upcoming moves, I’d be smoother. “Don’t have happy hands,” was another instruction, meaning one’s hands barely need to move throughout some of the turns. Over-steering is a common mistake. He showed me the line and told me when to brake. When we switched places, I followed directions as he gave them.

After the session, he asked if I had questions. I didn’t really know what to ask but looked forward to doing it again. Faster. 28 October

photos by courtesy MotorSport Ranch

On the track, I followed Mike’s instructions as best I could. At faster speeds, it’s a little harder. I had those happy hands he warned me about. I needed prompts to turn my head, get in the right line, and brake. I took a few turns too fast, positioned myself correctly in Ricochet and Little Bend correctly every time, and messed up at least two turns repeatedly, not remembering where I was on the track. Awareness of flag stations and drivers on my butt wasn’t easy either. On my second or third lap, I was given a pointby and passed another driver. Typically, I was giving the passing sign, and at least twice I offered it too late in the passing zone. When asked why I slowed down the last few laps, I told Mike I felt like throwing up the second half of that session. Not sure whether it was the heat, the higher speeds, the helmet or all of them combined, I hydrated and enjoyed the A/C in the classroom for 30 minutes. Session three I felt fine. Before heading out, I apologized to the nice man who passed me in the nonpassing zone due to my late signal. The fastest speed I hit was 94 mph in the straightaways, and I continued to learn from my coach. I improved in some areas, but still messed up Horseshoe and Boot Hill turns like the session before. Mike thought I was a quick learner and noticed improvement from the session before. Before the tasty social at the Drive Exotic garage with Cane’s chicken and adult beverages, I changed out of the required long, natural-fiber pants. Soaked from head to toe and a bit exhausted, I was thankful for the extra change of clothing and ball cap I brought. I spoke to several drivers and instructors who enjoyed the one-day experience despite my car reading 108 F at day’s end. One of the coaches wished more women participated in DE days. Whether it’s intimidation, lack of automobile knowledge, or lack of interest, we weren’t sure why. We discussed perhaps the creation of a ladies one-day event or possibly a ladies-only novice group sometime in the future. So, ladies, if this interests you speak up at the socials or drives and we’ll see what transpires.

Most memorable Maverick or PCA event Road rallies organized by Maverick back in mid and late 2000s with a walkie talkie in each car! PCA track weekends at COTA are a close second!

Best thing about owning a Porsche Porsche ownership is rewarding on two fronts: The cars are incredible with timeless appeal of their handling, speed and reliability. Their practicality ranges from grocery getter to fast laps on track! The second is the people! Porsche owners and the camaraderie among them is incredible! I look forward to Porsche meets as each is like a mini reunion!

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor By Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Loyal readers, even though I have only been with you for a short time, I feel like I know you. I feel like we share many of the same hopes and dreams, and pitfalls of life. Does life sometimes get you down? Kids that won’t do their math homework. Coworkers that don’t pull their weight. Hot water heaters that don’t make water hot anymore? I think I have some information that could change your life. When the stress of the day seems ever present, and you just can’t seem to find solace, strap on a helmet and find a track. Seriously, it works. You’ve probably heard that you can’t be angry when you smile. Well, if my recent experience is any indication, you can’t be too concerned about math homework while piloting your Porsche around a track at speed. There are many among us that have already figured this out. PSA - they’ve been holding out on you. You don’t need a GT3 and catlike reflexes. You don’t even need hours of watching YouTube track videos or playing Grand Tourismo on X-Box. What you do need is a sense of adventure and a good instructor. The former you’ll need to muster on your own, but the latter is in good supply in Texas, especially in the Maverick Region. I recently attended the Austin Schnell Fest at the Circuit of the Americas. This event is a collaboration between the Hill Country, Lone Star, and Maverick PCA Regions along

with the Houston chapter of BMW CCA. They really do a fantastic job. The anticipation I felt pulling onto the grid amidst far newer and more powerful cars quickly faded as we got onto the This isn’t a great picture of the action, but we do track. Many of the like pictures don’t we? Big thanks to David Gross! drivers in the green group were like myself, either the first time on a track or the first time at COTA. We were the slower ones, but that didn’t matter. We were there, concentrating, improving and getting faster, AND not worried in the slightest about coworkers or hot water heaters. It just wasn’t possible. It was like an amusement park that you are in control of. A serious amusement park, but still. So, take a mental health break and take advantage of the programs and experience your membership in the PCA and Maverick Region affords you. Your family might just thank you. Enjoy the drive!
