Sprockets:

We’re Shifting Into Our Busy Season

By David Robertson, Region President

I

t has been a busy summer and as usual, hard to believe that it is already over. Now that we are entering the new season with everyone back in town and the kids in school, our events are shifting into high gear. With more than half the year gone, I wanted to look back at some of the amazing things we have accomplished so far this year. New Logo A logo committee was formed and presentations were made to the board. A more modern logo was decided upon that works well in all formats including digital and embroidery. Mavs & Mochas This event was started a while back by one of our members as a non-Maverick gathering and was so successful we made it official! Earlier this year we introduced Mavs & Mochas and it has consistently attracted over 100 Porsches from throughout the region. PCA License Plates This concept was introduced early this year. We had to get 400 indications of interest and now we are almost at the initial 200 plates purchased to start production! Schnell Fest at Circuit of the Americas in Austin These events feature two different opportunities at COTA where all levels of DE drivers can experience the world-famous track! We have partnered with 2 other Regions and the BMW club to make this a big success. Color Slipstream You are reading the first edition now! Record attendance at our events It is our volunteers that make all this possible and the time and effort spent by these individuals never ceases to amaze me! We have a lot to celebrate but much more to do. We have several projects currently underway for the second half of 2017. One of those projects I would like to mention is getting more focused on our charity efforts. Last year the Maverick Region donated almost $20,000 to the two charities we sponsored during the year. This is not an insignificant number, but I believe that we can do much better and make a much bigger impact in our community. There will be more to come on this subject but for now be prepared to help us in this endeavor. I am convinced that if we can get more of our members involved and educated about our charity efforts we can do big things! One other change that you will notice this month other than this publication being published in full color, is that the board meeting minutes have been moved online. You have full access to them at http://mav.pca.org/news/minutes/. 2 September

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 MAV OF THE MONTH: Bill Orr Bill Orr not only continues to be a major contributor to the Maverick PCA club but also on the regional and national PCA level. Using his background in digital marketing, Bill has revamped our website and either created or greatly improved our presence with all the social media platforms. At this year’s Porsche Parade, the Maverick Region received a national award for our website. He was instrumental in our logo design update and has also created the new Zone 5 logo. Bill brought up the idea of PCA custom license plates and through his hard work that program is becoming a reality. We have video screens in all the Porsche dealerships and many independent shops around town advertising our club and events to prospective members through Bill’s work. The video screen idea is gaining momentum on a national PCA level as well. Along with his contributions in the marketing of our club, Bill is also the co-chair of our Tours events and is always happy to jump in whenever help is needed at any of our events. Thank you, Bill, for all your time and personal expertise you have given to our club. Enjoy your gift certificate to Silver Fox!

Maverick Region 55th Anniversary By Jim Hirsch

W

here were you 55 years ago? With over 2500 current members in our Region, that question is going to garner a great variety of answers, many of which will be something like “I wasn’t born yet”. I ask the question in preparation for our 55th Anniversary. To be more precise, our PCA Maverick Region was “born” in November 1962 at the Fiesta Best Western Motel in Arlington with 15 charter members. The official charter from the national offices of PCA was issued on December 24, 1962. For me, as a nine-year old lad back in 1962, there are some persistent memories from that year. Magazines such as Hot Rod were still in their early years and our Porsches received ink in few magazines until Sports Car Graphic came along. As many of you know, I’m taking advantage of retirement and a particularly well-mannered 2014 Boxster S to enjoy many extended road trips. As it turns out, my favorite aunt (something everyone can relate to) made her annual vacation in the form of a road trip. Helen was partial to Pontiacs and seemed to have a new one every couple of years.

Anniversary logo by Kurt Scaggs

She had just purchased a 1962 Pontiac Bonneville Two-Door Hardtop and was heading to Seattle from our small town in Iowa to the World’s Fair for her vacation that year. She arrived back in town two weeks later and I became the proud owner of a new t-shirt that had something called a “Space Needle” on it. I must have worn that shirt for three or four years before it finally became relegated to the rag pile. Coincidentally, Sharon and I made it a point during our recent road trip to the Porsche Parade in Spokane, to extend our trip by a couple of weeks and a few thousand miles. You guessed it, Seattle was definitely on our itinerary and we made it to the top of the Space Needle! But, that t-shirt style was no longer available. With that context, the PCA, and our founding members of the Maverick Region, certainly showed foresight into what the Porsche marque would become. And, here we are in 2017, celebrating that beginning 55 years later. I’d like to hear your memories from 55 years ago and share those with our members in upcoming issues. Please send those to editor@mavpca.org.

PCA Tours:

A Tour to (and on) the Track

By Mark Pitarresi, PCA Tours Co-Chair

A

fter a welcome summer break, the Maverick Region PCA Tours program resumes its schedule with a drive to MotorSport Ranch later this month. As icing on the cake, drivers will be allowed onto the track for a series of Parade Laps. The tour is scheduled for Sunday, September 24, at 9:00 a.m. It will start in the parking lot of Costco, 250 E Hwy 67, in Duncanville, and end at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson. The length of the tour is 71 miles, and because of the short distance, there will be no rest stops. Drivers wishing to take to the track for Parade Laps will be required to present a $25.00 Walmart gift card to the Gridmaster as a charitable contribution to the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. You can learn more about this very worthy club charity that our club supports on our web page at http://mav.pca.org/about/ charity.asp. If you’ve never been to MotorSport Ranch (MSR), it is one of the many “country club” tracks that have sprouted up all over the country that cater specifically to performance automobile owners. It’s primarily a track for club members to have fun and go as fast as

their comfort level allows. The Maverick Region holds most of its Drivers’ Education events there. In fact, a Maverick DE will be taking place the same day that we’ll be there. We’ll take to the track during the DE lunch break. Speaking of which: lunch will also be available, provided by Del Norte Tacos; $10 for adults and $5 for kids (12 and under). Just indicate in your RSVP if you plan to have lunch at the track. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “What exactly is a Parade Lap?” A Parade Lap is not so slow as to emulate a vehicle towing a parade float, nor is it an open invitation to go flat out around the course. Consider a Parade Lap as a “safety car” lap. Not too slow, not too fast. If you plan to attend the Tour, it is imperative that you RSVP before the Tour at http://mav.pca.org/ register/tours/. Once registered for the Tour, you will receive an e-mail three days before the Tour with the following attachments: a Garmin .gdb file of the route, a route overview, and turn-by-turn instructions. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send me an email at tours@mavpca.org.

Kruder’s Cars & Conversations By Bill Kruder, Region Advertising Chair

W

ell, this month’s encounter took some twists and turns before we actually met. Mike had been on Facebook and connected with James Shoffit. The two exchanged comments and Mike then showed up at Mavs & Mochas at the Frisco Railyard. As luck would have it, James was there to greet Mike and his Targa. As the morning progressed, Debi told me about this pretty green Targa she had seen and loved. Fast-forward, and as a lot of you know, I’m all about coffee houses. Mike posted on FB a coffee house he was at in Addison and I “liked” it. With that, the introduction was made and we had “non-worker” coffee a couple days later. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . . Mike Mahoney, member since 2016, Owner 1976 911S Targa and 1995 911 (993) Bill Kruder: So I understand you are not from these parts (said with a twang). Mike Mahoney: No I’m not, nor did I ever expect to be living here (laughing). I was born and raised in SoCal, in a small community called La Cañada, right off the 210, kind of between Pasadena and Glendale; I lived there ‘til I went off to college.

in Ornamental Horticulture, which seemed like a natural thing to do as we were in that business of designing plant and flower displays, much like you would see around golf courses and the like. BK: You say “was;” did that change? MM: Oh yes! I decided I could learn the landscape part of things, but what I really needed was to learn how to run a business, so I switched to Business Administration, which in those days covered about everything for those of us not sure what we would be doing. BK: And how did that work out? MM: Pretty good for the first couple years out of college. We ran a landscaping company out of Pismo Beach. BK: But I know you spent your career in an entirely different field . . . MM: I did. In 1979, my then father-in-law was an executive with Mobil Oil, now Exxon Mobil, and he got me an interview with them. The facility was near LA, and I learned and managed the oil production process that produced what we call “finished lubricants,” or in layman’s terms, car oil (laughing). I guess I did ok, and was with them for nearly 35 years before retiring a couple years ago.

BK: And where was that? MM: I attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, about three hours up the coast from La Cañada.

BK: So I understand you moved a lot over the years? MM: That we did. We lived in Virginia and New Jersey, moved then to Utah, down to Arizona, up to Spokane, back to Utah, then settling in San Diego before at last arriving in Dallas.

BK: And what did you study? MM: It’s funny. I was working with a friend and we had a small landscape business, so I majored

BK: Wow! You did move a lot and all the while having the same job? MM: Actually no; I was always with Mobil Oil but not always in

12 September

the same position. The first stop in 1993 in Utah I moved from production to sales and did that ‘til 2015. BK: Ok so after all the moves and living in San Diego, what in the world brought you here? MM: Well as life goes on, I had gotten divorced and was pretty content until love, Darlene, entered the picture. We had known each other for years, as she was based here in Dallas and was my travel agent. On a weak moment she said “Why don’t you come to Dallas and I will show you around?” This was in the fall of 2010, and by spring of 2011 I was a resident. We were married in May 2012.

Darlene, travel agent and love for Mike

BK: Ok, let’s talk cars. What was your first car? MM: The first car I bought was a ‘68 Forest Green VW Squareback. I was about 17 and a senior in high school. I think I paid about $875 for it. BK: How did you get into your passion for Porsche? MM: Like so many of us, it was from being a kid. My best friend’s dad had a silver ‘72-73 911T Targa and he actually let us take it out. The other was a neighbor. He had

owned a brown ‘69-70 911T Targa, and I was hooked. BK: Well that explains one of the cars you drive today. So when did you buy your first Porsche? MM: Think that was in 19992000. I bought a Black-on-Tan 1978 911SC and you guessed it, Targa. I had that for about 10 years, but again life gets in the way, and I sold it.

911S Targa on eBay out of Bend, Oregon. I jumped in on the bids late that night and went to bed. I woke up the next morning with a message that I had bought the car. Let me tell you I was shocked! Ok, terrified! “What had I done now?” As it turned out, it needed some restoring and repairs and after about 7 months I was driving it.

BK: So let’s fast-forward to today. Tell me about your cars. MM: Well, I had been without a Porsche for 5-6 years and I was coming out of a very difficult period. Darlene had passed away suddenly, and I just wanted something to feel good about. So last August, I found this ‘76 Emerald Green metallic

BK: And how about the 993? MM: Well that too was a bit unnerving. I was on Facebook and saw that Robert Callaway had posted that his friend Vaughn Garrett was selling his Grand Prix White 1995 993. I think I made a comment about it and James Shoffit noted that it was one great car and “you better scoop it up!” And as they say, the rest is history. I bought the car in June and love it! So there you have it! If Mike had not been on FB and found us at the Railyard, we might have never met and had the chance to drive friendships. Debi is hoping for a ride in the Green Targa soon!

I needed consideration. PCA withholds part of the prize value to collect my thoughts. When I did, David re-iterated for this purpose. The cash portion of the prize also that I was, in fact, a winner of the Spring Member Only helps mitigate this, but it won’t cover everything. It will Raffle, and the new owner of a 2018 911 GTS. re you one of those people who think rain in the area will keep Porsche owners in their garage? “Well admittedly I am”, said Bill Kruder, “but let us tell you, rain or shine, this group is still Driving Friendships”! In July, Mavs & Mochas met in the rain in Frisco, TX at Stonebriar Community Church, where 140 Pinewood Derby cars competed for novelty design, classic design, and speed. Let me set this up for you. The morning started out with a small chance of rain but storms coming down from the north. Our Porsches pulled in despite the threat, with the ever-anticipated 40th anniversary lineup of the 928. We had 20 928s in attendance, thanks to Roger Tyson of 928sRus, which included his very rare, one of 42, Guards Red 928 SE right-hand-drive coupe. If you have not attended this car event, it’s one of our favorites of the season, with the cars outside at 170inch length on average, and the rigs inside at a maximum of 7 inches. Inside, the race for speed begins at 10 am, each car racing in four heats (every track) and computer-monitored software and timer calculating the fastest of their four times. The top speed was 2.7478 secs or 180mph (to scale, of course). Not too shabby

Porsche Parade 2017: By Carey Spreen

T

he Porsche Parade is PCA’s annual convention, spanning seven days and comprised of competitive events, driving tours, awards banquets, and technical seminars. It’s held in different parts of the country each year, typically alternating between eastern, central, and western portions of the US. This year was the west’s turn, with the Parade headquartered in Spokane, Washington.

The most direct driving route to Spokane is more than 1,800 miles from just about any location in the Maverick Region. Nevertheless, almost three dozen Mavericks made that journey this year to attend the Porsche Parade. Traditionally, there are four main competitive events at a Parade: the Concours d’Elegance, the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Rally, the Autocross, and the Tech Quiz. In addition to these events, the Parade also offers a golf tournament, a 5K run/walk, an art show, and RC car racing for both kids and adults. Mavericks competed in almost all of these events and represented the region in fine form. The Concours d’Elegance took place first, on Monday of Parade week. The Concours is divided into three groups: Restoration, for Porsches that have been rebuilt or otherwise restored; Preservation, for Porsches that have been maintained in their original condition; and Preparation, for any 18 September

Porsche that has been modified from original. The Restoration and Preservation groups consist of Porsches built before 1999, while the Preparation group is open to all Porsches, and is further subdivided into Full, Touring, and Street classes, with Full classes receiving the most thorough judging. This year, Tom and Marti Taff were the sole representatives of Maverick Region in the Concours, entering their 1968 911S in class RS03F (Restoration group, full judging, 1965-1973 911 and 912). But they represented us well! Not only did the Taffs score 295.2 raw points out of a possible 300 -- good for 5th place in class -- they also received a Zuffenhausen Silver Level of Achievement Award for that high score! Congratulations Tom and Marti!

Photos courtesy of PCA There are five Rally classes, based on how much rally equipment the teams have in their cars. They range from R05, Unequipped (only stopwatches, original speedometers and odometers, and pens and paper allowed; no GPS) to R01, Equipped (anything goes, including specialized rally computers that continuously calculate how far off they are from the ideal speed and location along the route).

The TSD Rally ran the next day. A TSD Rally is a competition, but not a race – driver/navigator teams must follow a route according to an arcane set of route instructions that tell them where to turn and how fast to go, but not much else. There are several checkpoints scattered throughout the route, but the teams don’t know where they are. However, they must arrive at each checkpoint with split-second accuracy; each second they are early or late costs them one point. The team with the lowest point score wins.

Two teams of Mavericks participated in the TSD Rally, both winning trophies. In class R03, Unequipped Navigational, Myra Sutton (driving) and Jerry Sutton (navigating) earned 3rd place out of 54 class entries, while in class R04, Unequipped Plus, Don Breithaupt (driving) and Carey Spreen (navigating) garnered 2nd place out of 30 in the class. Congratulations to both teams! The Autocross spanned Wednesday and Thursday due to the number of entrants. An autocross is a timed driving event which is held

on a large paved area, using traffic cones to mark off a course on which each participant has four chances to achieve his or her best lap time. This is all against the clock; there is no wheel-to-wheel racing, and the course is short – the fastest run of the event was 34.653 seconds, set by a Modified class 2011 911 GT3 RS. As you might expect, several Mavericks competed in the Autocross. Jerry and Myra Sutton competed in their Cayenne. Also in a Cayenne were Sue Crimm, Carey Spreen, and Carey’s daughter Geneva, competing in her first Parade autocross. James and Wendy Shoffit towed their Cayman GT4 all the way to Spokane just to compete in the Autocross, but on the day they were supposed to run, James unfortunately had too much pain in his shoulder to drive. Wendy drove, but was squeezed out of 1st place in her class by five-time SCCA national champion autocrosser Kristi Brown by a mere 35 thousandths of a second, and was less than 1 second away from Ladies’ Top Time of Day overall. Ed Mayo and Julia Underwood drove Ed’s 1972 911S (aka “Elvira”), with Ed beating longtime autocross rival Terry Zaccone from Golden Gate Region. Congratulations to all! Taking place on Thursday was the Gimmick Rally, which is a more relaxed rally. This year featured a “poker run”-style event, in which participants arrived at checkpoints, rolled dice, and drew a playing

The Technical and Historical Quiz followed on Friday. This is a written test that gauges the entrants’ knowledge about the history of Porsche, its model line, and its racing accomplishments, as well as technical details of the cars. This year it consisted of 75 questions, 50 of which Sue Crimm receiving her trophy for first place in the AX were “general” quescard at each stop, ending up with tions that everyone a poker hand by the end of the answered, followed by 25 questions event. A Woman’s View of Parade

By Sue Crimm For me, Parade is a place to have fun with friends; after all, it’s not just the cars, it’s the people! I get to catch up with people not only from the Maverick Region, but from all over the country. Plus it’s easy to make new friends because you have something in common! There are always fun things to do with your friends at Parade that also take you to some of the more breathtaking parts of the area you’re visiting. This year was no exception, and there was something happening every day of the week, from going on a bus tour to 12 wineries around the area, or a driving tour to Schweitzer Mountain, or a driving/bike tour on Hiawatha Trail to Lookout Mountain. And this was just a few of the activities we had to choose from! We decided to do the Lunch Cruise on Lake Coeur d’ Alene. The lake is gorgeous, and the mountains in the background are magnificent. I didn’t know much about Idaho before this, but Coeur d’ Alene is a fun city and with the lake, beach, and park right next door, makes it a perfect place to raise a family. We took one night to have dinner with a bunch of our Maverick friends at a place called The Wandering Table. It’s in a new urban development called Kendall Yards that features scenic views, diverse businesses, and homes all within a five-minute stroll along the Centennial Trail from downtown and the Davenport Hotel. The chefs at The Wandering Table work directly with farmers and use the freshest produce possible, therefore the menu is always changing. We had a sweet potato chip and dip appetizer that was to die for. I’d love to go back and do more sightseeing, but next year the PCA Parade is in Lake of the Ozarks and I can’t wait to go explore that with my family. 19

PCA also has a competition for regional websites, and Maverick Region took 2nd place in Class V, regions with more than 800 members. Congratulations James Shoffit and Bill Orr!

The Parade features an art show every year, and Julia Underwood submitted two items, both of which won awards: 2nd place for a 911 grille containing various grille badges, named “Lufteinlassgitter” (air inlet grille) and Honorable Mention for a quilt of the Porsche crest, named “Esther’s Deckelwappen” (lid emblem).

James Shoffit accepts the website award

In the Golf Tournament, Maverick Region First Couple David and Tracy Robertson took 2nd place in Team play. Additionally, the final morning of Parade includes a 5K run/walk, categorized by age group and gender. Our own Tracy Robertson took 2nd place in the Ladies age 40-49 class with a time of 34 minutes 3 seconds.

View from a Former Parade Kid

By Geneva Spreen I was raised in the Porsche Club, so every summer I look forward to the Porsche Parade. It’s ingrained in me -- every June I get so excited I can even smell the tires and that signature “Porsche smell.” I’m going on 21 years old now, but when I was younger, I always looked forward to riding with James and Wendy Shoffit, and their daughter Jasmine. We always had games, movies, coloring books, you name it, and we had it in the back of the truck to keep us kids occupied for 20-plus hours total driving time to get to each Parade. This was my first time competing in the autocross at Parade. My dad, his girlfriend Sue, and I drove his 2008 Cayenne up to Spokane, WA this year. We ran on Thursday morning, in the P17 Cayenne Production class. As I mentioned, this was my first autocross with Parade, but I had autocrossed before in the Maverick Region at Mineral Wells in my dad’s 1982 911 SC, so autocrossing a Cayenne was slightly different. The course was surprisingly simple, just one turn that was more than 180 degrees, with a couple of slaloms thrown in. We each were able to run four times against the clock, our fastest time taken out of those four runs. This year, we were able to have an instructor in the vehicle with us, but those runs don’t count. So for my first run, I had none other than the National Autocross chair in the car with me for my first run, just so he could tell me what I was doing wrong and what to fix to make my time faster. There were only three ladies in my class, including myself, but the competition was cutthroat. There was only differences of tenths and hundredths of seconds between all three of us most of the runs. By the end of it, Sue got 1st place with 46.373 seconds, and I got 3rd place with 48.160. I didn’t really go in thinking I’d do well, but I was proud of myself none the less, and afterward I was told I even beat the time of some people with modified cars. With this experience under my belt, I do have to say I enjoy autocrossing the 911 better than the Cayenne, only because the 911 is smaller and faster, and since I am my father’s daughter, I enjoy going fast. Next time I go to Parade and autocross, it’s definitely going to be a smaller car like a 911! 20 September

David and Tracy Robertson, along with Caleb Kiebert, took second place in the Parade Golf Tournament

Besides these competitive events, the Parade offers driving tours (both guided and on your own), bus tours, wine and beer tastings, and technical seminars, as well as all kinds of events just for the kids!

The Arbor Crest Winery was one of many self-guided tours available to Parade participants

So if any of this sounds like fun, take note that the 2018 Porsche Parade will be held at the Tan-Tar-A Resort on the Lake of the Ozarks in south central Missouri, only about 500 miles from most locations in Maverick Region. You’ll be glad you did!

Tech Session Recap:

Growler Motor Labs

By Peter Wen

T

uning is the simplest and the most cost effective way to improve the performance of your Porsche. When the opportunity became available to get my car tuned and dyno’d at Growler Motor Labs, I didn’t think twice. Growler Motor Labs specializes in Cobb Tuning, which is unique from other tuning products in the marketplace. With its proprietary Accessport device, you can easily modify your Porsche’s ECU by simply uploading different maps. Plug the Accessport unit into the car’s OBD-II port and you are good to go; no need to remove the ECU or visit your mechanic. Currently Cobb makes Off-The-Shelf (OTS) maps for certain models of Boxster/Cayman, 996/997/991 Turbos, and Macans. If more power is desired, OTS maps can be fine-tuned (called ProTune) for your specific Porsche! This process is also 100% reversible, since the Accessport saves a copy of the original Porsche map during the initial synch. During the tech session, my Porsche completed three dynamometer runs. The first run established the baseline of the car’s performance. We then installed the OTS map and ran the dyno again. After the second run, with the OTS dyno data in hand, the Growler technician, Grant Tillman, expertly “tuned” the OTS map and created a custom ProTune map for my car. After that was installed, we ran the dyno for the third time. Before I get to the results, I must confess, I was a nervous wreck during those dyno runs. Like an expectant father, heart racing, palm sweating, I paced the shop floor. My car was strapped down securely on the all-wheel drive Mustang Dynamometer. After a brief warm up, it was eased to around 2,000 rpm, then Grant floored it all the way up to 6,700 rpm just before the redline. The computer captured all telemetry data from the ECU during the run, including horsepower and torque stats.

Photos by Jim Hirsch Standing next to my Turbo S while running pedal-tothe-metal was a surreal experience. The sound coming off the 3.8 liter flat 6 with twin turbochargers was like a jet plane taking off. During the rapid acceleration, the car emitted intense heat waves that sent all spectators back a step or two. Once it surpassed 6,000 rpm, it was so incredibly loud and intense that I felt I should kneel and pray for my baby. The results were impressive. Power increased 8% with the OTS map and 10% with the ProTune, to 530 WHP (wheel HP). With the estimated 19% drivetrain loss, the estimated crank HP was actually over 650 (BHP)! Torque had even more impressive gain from the tune: 9% with the OTS and 13% with the ProTune to 573 (ft-lb), a gain of 67 ft-lb! With this much gain in power and torque easily accessible starting at 3,000 rpm, the driving dynamic (fun factor) improved drastically. Like Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear, I too wanted to shout: “More Power!” My Turbo S felt like a new car. Drive it normally, there’s no difference. However, when you push it, a new beast emerges. The best part? The car still has the same smooth and quick PDK shifts that we all know and love. Sport and Sport Plus modes all continue to work, albeit with more urgency and aggression. Launch control? Yep. Step aside Tesla, this is the new ludicrous-mode! I absolutely love the tune. It makes an incredible car even better. Pound for pound (or dollars in this case), this is one heck of a mod. I am so pleased with the results. Oh, and one unexpected and unconfirmed benefit: better fuel economy! Can this really be true? More power and better MPG? Somebody pinch me! Editor’s Note: Chris Sorrells also brought his 2017 Macan S to this tuning session and had similar improvements in performance numbers. See page 16 for details on our next tech session and plan to attend.

Over 40 Mavericks were in attendance

Historicizing Porsche: By Ash Seidl-Staley

H

Experience Supports Present Endeavors

istorians are often prompted to look to the past because of current events. Whether the purpose is to understand why current events are unfolding, or just to reassure themselves that everything will be ok, looking to the past is beneficial. I was prompted to revisit additional aspects of Ferdinand Porsche’s past this week when I read the numerous headlines describing how Porsche was backing out of Le Mans for Formula E. At first, I couldn’t believe it to be true. I mean Porsche’s 919s have been absolutely killing the competition in the LMP 1 category. Why would they give that up? Porsche, after winning the last three Le Mans races, might be leaving one racing category on a high, but what are the actual repercussions from moving to the Formula E program? Is it really in Porsche’s best interest to pursue Formula E? What are the benefits? And has Porsche ever done anything similar in the past? First, it is important to note that the last few years, but this summer especially, has seen many European car makers jumping into the Formula E circuit. Whether it is because of diesel-gate, or just because they want to boast a more climate friendly platform, companies like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi have already committed to the formula E’s strict program. Evidently the German auto makers expect to utilize any mechanical advancement created on the track for their electronically-propelled production cars. Hybrids and electric vehicles will finally receive the boost in development they need to take more control of the auto market currently running on petroleum. I for one am actually excited. Many of the Porsche’s future innovations will most likely be released in updated forms of the much anticipated Mission E sports car unveiled in 2015. Or, the company will come out with other mechanical processes that might help me update one of my classics. It all depends really. Porsche’s decision to compete in Formula E puts it against global rivals including Renault, Panasonic Jaguar, and Faraday Future Dragon Racing, but considering Porsche’s pedigree, I like our odds. It is my opinion that Ferdinand Porsche himself would not only approve of his company’s most recent announcement; he would have actively played a role in the Formula E car’s development. Many Porschephiles know that the Egger-Lohner electric vehicle, C.2 Phaeton model—the P1 for short—was the first car that Porsche designed and built. In 1898, Ferdinand Porsche’s employer at the time, a Mr. Ludwig Lohner, had been convinced after his recent trip to the United States that Europe was on the brink of an automobile revolution. In his opinion, the days of the horse drawn 28 September

buggy were numbered. As a result, Lohner commissioned Porsche to create an electric drivetrain with which to propel his vehicles of the future. Porsche built the P1 on a wooden chassis, which could easily accommodate production of both a coupe and an open top variety. For propulsion, Porsche designed an “octagonal electric mo- Egger Lohner found in 2014 tor,” which was powered by a massive electric battery mounted in a bed of shock absorbers at the rear of the vehicle. The 44-cell, 80-volt rechargeable battery held a capacity of 300 Ah, and allowed the vehicle to drive up to 30 miles regularly, and up to 49 miles if the conditions were correct and the battery was overcharged. Additionally, Porsche mounted electric motors in the hubs of the front wheels, giving them an output of 1.8 kW at 120 rpm. The vehicle moved and shifted on a 12-speed controller, and had the ability, through the motors on the front axle as well as the mechanical strap brake located at the rear axle, to brake at all four wheels. Top speed for the vehicle was around 50 km/h (about 30 mph), and the total weight of the vehicle clocked in at just over 2,600 pounds. What many people don’t realize about the P1 is that from the moment of its birth, Porsche raced his creation! On September 28, 1899, at the International Motor Vehicle Exhibition held in Berlin, Germany, Porsche entered the P1 into the 40 km race that was announced to exclusively exhibit electric vehicles. Taking on three additional passengers and setting out on the vehicle’s first official race, Porsche steered his creation into an easy victory, passing the finish line a full 18 minutes faster than his nearest competitor! A year later at the Semmering Circuit near Vienna, Porsche again took first place in his P1. Our pedigree is strong in the electric market. Ultimately, Porsche AG has learned that racing in the Formula E program will be a less expensive endeavor for its racing arms, and that the move will grant Porsche technicians and mechanics the freedom to innovate and create. In a way, Porsche production is coming full circle. Just like Ferdinand Porsche did in the past, Porsche AG will use the experiences learned through electric vehicle production to build upon proven models of excellence. A Case for Coatings:

New Chemistry Means Better Protection

By Tony “Concorso” Varvel

O

ver the years, we’ve all watched the advancement of many products and technologies and have learned the hard way, many times, that most of the “technology” is nothing innovative at all. Rather, an adjustment in labeling or claim, a new bottle, and there you go: a new choice on the shelves. That being said, every once and while, a product comes along that is a legitimate advancement. In car care, quartz or ceramics coatings are the current discussion. Coatings technologies offer a combination of great looks and durability with an emphasis on durability. Waxes and synthetic polymers are usually good for 3-6 months, while coatings are good for 1-5 years depending on manufacturing and application requirements. Coatings bring a smaller, tighter molecular structure to the composition and thereby offer a more complete surface protection. No matter the manufacturer, the preparation process is critically important to the effectiveness of the coating. So let’s look at some of the basics in coatings prep. A good two-bucket wash is first. Blow dry if possible; otherwise, take clean microfibers and a little instant detailer, then wipe dry. The instant detailer will help clean a little more and offers lubricant to prevent further marring while drying. Now is a good time for a thorough close inspection of your paint. You can kill two birds with one stone by inspecting while claying or using a surface prep mitt on the paint. Many times, I can feel flaws in the paint more easily than than I can see them. Once prepped and areas for correction are identified, it’s time to start determining the best products and equipment for the job. Here’s a perfect example of when not to get in a hurry. Using the least aggressive materials possible, pick an obscure problem spot on the car and test your thinking. Polishes, microfiber discs, and foam pads come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and compositions, with all producing differing combined results. More patience is required here. After determining the right products to use, I start the actual correction of the paint. Working in 2 x 2 sections, I work over the surface of the entire car, while inspecting results constantly. Always be mindful of where you are on the car while working. Edges, intakes, fender folds, and other design features can be very fragile. Extreme caution is needed to prevent detailing disaster. Once paint is burned or polished through, the finish is damaged. No going back, so please exercise the utmost caution when working through the process. It may sound funny, but it is very easy to get “lost” in the

Image courtesy of the Author work, and hitting a thin spot or weak edge can happen in the blink of an eye. Taping off questionable areas can save the worry as well. After polishing is completed, another round of cleaning is required. Most of the coating manufacturers offer a final surface cleaner prep as part of the process. It is imperative that you cover every square inch of the surface intended for coating. Residue of any type left on the paint surface will only inhibit the bonding of the coating to the paint. Once the surface is clean, you are ready to apply the first layer of coating product. Applying a coating may be can be as straight forward as spraying the product onto a microfiber cloth and wiping on, or liquid dripped onto a felt-covered sponge and applied in multiple layers. Either way, you can achieve great results. The key is to go slow and be very patient. Keep a keen eye on the exact area you are working on and make sure to finish that spot before moving on to the next. Once a coating is applied, you need to let it cure for at least 24 hours before exposing it to the elements or other cleaners. Once cured, a coating is extremely resistant to breakdown from degreasers and other heavy cleaners, and the impact resistance to bugs is unbelievable. The coating technologies offer great long-term protection for your paint and other car finishes. That does not mean that they are self-cleaning and can be neglected, but with a little help from us, the coatings make clean up a snap for the entire vehicle, while offering significant protection from Saturday morning wipe downs with your favorite detailing spray, as well as protection from the abuse of the local machine car washes. There is also a great amount of interest in the use of coatings designed specifically for your wheels. With the powerful brakes on your Porsche, you pay the price of a lot of brake dust. And yes, the rim coating products available do an amazing job of reducing brake dust build-up and make cleaning much easier. Pound for pound, coatings are the best the auto care industry has come up with for overall maintenance. They are well worth the time and effort to really protect your investment. I’ll leave you with a few words of wisdom from the great Benjamin Franklin. He once said, “A It’s all in the details little knowledge can be a dangerous weapon.” So be very careful and mindful that these are all imperfect sciences, and an abundance of caution is vital to a successful result. Until then . . . “Detail On!”. 31

elcome to the wonderful world of technicolor, or Pantone color, or whatever this new-fangled process is that allows Slipstream to be printed in full-color now. For those of us who remember life before color TV (or even before TV, period), the September 2017 issue you’re reading is truly a watershed moment. The first Maverick Region newsletter was printed in 1963. Actually it was a single, typewritten 8.5 X 14 inch page. Along the way, Slipstream became multi-page and featured hand-drawn illustrations for covers before photos could be easily added. Fast forward to this issue and we have a 40-page, full color, professionally printed journal highlighting member activities and adventures with photos and text, along with over 30 club sponsor ads to help defray printing costs. Speaking of our advertisers, please thank them whenever you do business with them as they stepped up when offered our new advertising package to help support the color printing costs. Providing Slipstream in full-color would not happen without their continued support. You can find the Advertiser Index on page 34.

Now to a topic that aligns well with our Maverick Region’s 55th anniversary - nostalgia. I traveled back 55 years in the article on page 6, and it’s special events like our 55th anniversary that provides the impetus for many of our members to remember other events in their lives that closely involved Porsches or simply driving on the open road. After spending 31 days driving and over 8,000 miles on road trips in a period of nine weeks, I can attest to two often noted travel sayings. One, it is much more fun and interesting to travel on any road named “Byway” versus “Highway”. And, two, only a Porsche makes the scenic route and the fastest route one and the same. While you’re reminiscing during this 55th anniversary of our Maverick Region, spend some time planning road trips that will make new memories as well as revisiting routes of the past. Please be aware of one content change beginning with this issue of Slipstream. Board meeting minutes will no longer be published in the newsletter, but will be posted online for your reading at http://mav.pca.org/news/ minutes/. Carpe Viam!
