Hosted by the Department of Education for female and non-binary students in years 9-12, the event was a unique opportunity to showcase the Apprentice Program to young women interested in trade and tech industry career paths.

The team spoke to students about the opportunities Cummins offers its apprentices and networked with careers advisers from schools in the metro Melbourne area. They also gained insight into what other exhibiting companies were doing and connected with industry professionals.

Brisbane Truck Show: 2023 HVIA National Apprentice Challenge

Caleb Todd, a 4th Year Apprentice from Cummins Kalgoorlie, participated in the 2023 HVIA National Apprentice Challenge.

Since starting his apprenticeship in 2020, Caleb has been a keen learner with a strong work ethic, always aiming to complete his tasks in a timely manner. His dedication and attitude saw him to win the Apprentice of the Year Award in the Goldfields.

Team Talk asked Caleb about his experience in the Apprentice Challenge: How many heats and what was involved?

“There were six teams with two apprentices in each. There were three 45-minute heats where we had to identify nine faults. If something was done incorrectly or, for example, safety glasses were not worn, a 15-second time penalty was added to the apprentices’ total time.

“We were successful in the first three heats and made it through to the finals. The final was 60 minutes where nine faults were to be identified, including an extra hidden fault which added to the pressure.”

How did you feel?

“I was nervous going into all the heats and the final. Overall, I am happy I came third in the competition and proud of my result.”

A big shoutout to Martin Bostelman (Branch Manager – Kalgoorlie), Trevor Nelson (Service Manager) and the team at the Kalgoorlie branch as they have mentored and supported Caleb throughout his apprenticeship journey.

North West Regional Careers Expo

Representatives from Cummins Tamworth, including Grace Carey (1st Year Apprentice), Toby Newcombe (2nd Year Apprentice) and Luke Johnstone (Service Supervisor,) with support from Central Region APM Ren Trinchera, attended the North West Regional Careers Expo.

The expo in Tamworth was attended by 80 exhibitors and more than 2,000 students from the region.

It gave the branch the opportunity to showcase the X15 engine which provided a great conversation starter for students interested in becoming part of the next generation of Cummins Technicians.

The team was energised by the genuine interest from many students in the Cummins Apprentice Program.
