Tre parole Questa volta uso tre parole, apparentemente scollegate tra di loro, per analizzare il momento che stiamo vivendo: Rispetto, Diluvio, Web. Partiamo da Rispetto: se ne sente la mancanza, in tutti gli atti della nostra vita. Si manca di rispetto al buon senso quando il mondo benestante spreca metà del cibo con il quale sfamare chi non ha da mangiare, come si manca di rispetto all’età quando un ragazzo sul bus non fa sedere una signora anziana. Non si rispettano le idee degli altri, non si rispetta l’ambiente, non si rispetta la privacy, non si rispetta l’etica… beh, non si rispetta, in troppi casi, neanche la legge. Con questi continui esempi di mancanza di rispetto per tutto e tutti si genera un’abitudine al peggio, alla sciattezza, alla furbizia, alla scappatoia, alla deroga.

Questo ci collega alla seconda parola: il Diluvio.

Diluvio d’informazione e comunicazione, necessità di riempire di parole i contenitori dei mass media che, diversamente, urlerebbero per l’astinenza. Stiamo invadendo ogni spazio possibile, come quei muri bianchi che si coprono via via di scritte, sempre più fitte, sino a formare una ragnatela di segni, dove ogni segno che si aggiunge annulla l’altro che, per difendersi, si fa più grande, sino alla totale non-decifrazione. Il diluvio comunicativo ha ucciso il silenzio e la meditazione.

Ecco il collegamento con la terza parola, che rappresenta la forza e la maledizione del momento: il Web, la ragnatela mondiale che assieme alla democraticità del pensiero libero ci sta sommergendo nella miseria di un linguaggio impoverito, stravolto e offeso. Ma il grande male è la facilità con la quale, tramite la rete, è possibile calunniare, mentire, sottrarre, alludere, stravolgere, quasi sempre sotto la maschera di un nome inventato, quindi protetti dall’anonimato.

Recensioni finte, critiche entusiastiche comprate a blocchi, stroncature pubblicate da concorrenti invidiosi: un diluvio totalmente privo di rispetto che, grazie alla rete, inquina il mondo. Recuperiamo un po’ di silenzio, di rispetto e riportiamo la rete alla sua origine culturale. Diversamente, collassa (è già bene avviata a far si che ciò avvenga) e, date le sue dimensioni, sarebbe un po’ la fine del mondo.

THREE WORDS I’m going to use three words, apparently with no relevance among them, to analyze the times we live in: Respect, Deluge, Web. Let’s start with Respect: its loss is felt in all aspects of our lives. There’s no respect for common sense when the well-off world wastes half of its food that could feed those who have nothing to eat, just as there’s no respect for age when a youth on a bus does not give up his seat for an elderly lady. There’s no respect for the ideas of others, there’s no respect for the environment, for privacy, for ethics… and in fact, all too often, there’s no respect even for the law. With all these continuing examples of the lack of respect for everything and everyone we get used to the worst, to slovenliness, to wiliness, to finding a loophole, to postponing.

This leads us to the second word: Deluge. A deluge of information and communication, the need to fill the containers of the mass media with words which, otherwise, would cry out against the abstinence. We’re invading every single space, such as those white walls that a bit at a time are covered with writings and words, ever more crowded and dense, until they form a spider’s web of markings, where each mark that is added annuls another which, in self-defense, is made bigger, until the whole is non-decipherable. The communication deluge has killed silence and meditation.

And here’s the connection with the third word, which represents the strength and the damnation of our times: the Web, that global web that together with the democracy of free thought is drowning us in the misery of an impoverished language, contorted and wounded. But the greatest evil is the ease with which, through the web, one can slander, lie, subtract, allude,overturn, nearly always beneath the mask of an invented name, consequently protected by anonymity.Fake reviews, enthusiastic critiques bought by the pound, hostile reviews published by envious competitors: a deluge totally lacking in respect which, thanks to the web, pollutes the world. Let’s salvage a bit of silence, of respect and let’s return the web to its cultural origins. Otherwise it will collapse (it’s already well on the road) and, given its dimensions, it would be a bit like the end of the world.

API TRASFORMA IL LEGNO IN ARTE Carlo Apollo è l’ideatore della linea API - Antichi Pavimenti Italiani, una collezione esclusiva che lega passato e futuro, tradizione e innovazione, un costante dialogo tra eredità e futuro. Una mente ed una personalità creativa attenta al passato e alla cultura del proprio Paese. Capace di creare e trasmettere emozioni attraverso i suoi pavimenti, che decorano alcune delle più belle ed eleganti dimore del mondo. Carlo Apollo, con la creatività del designer, è capace di vedere al di là del materiale grezzo e di far tornare in vita il legno. Compito non semplice, se non si è innamorati dei materiali che si accarezzano e trasformano. Tra antiche dimore e chiese dimenticate, scova travi e pannelli risalenti a passati remoti, in modo da garantire l’unicità di ogni singolo pezzo. Naturalmente il tipo di legno e la quantità sono limitati a seconda del recupero. Il legno viene ricoverato nella bottega del designer delle meraviglie e sottoposto a specifici trattamenti, e qui ricomincia a battere il suo cuore fibroso, trasformato, impreziosito, stravolto all'esterno e intatto all’interno.

Un’arte in cui i dettagli sono fondamentali: ogni elemento deve armonizzarsi con gli altri per dispiegarne tutta la potenza, un lavoro in cui la trama viene studiata fino all’invisibile particolare. Ogni passaggio viene fatto sotto il vigile controllo di Apollo, che segue la sua opera dall'inizio alla fine. Perché il valore e la bellezza delle tavole possano trasfondersi direttamente dal designer all’acquirente.

Carlo Apollo is the creator of API Antichi Pavimenti Italiani line, an exclusive collection that links past and future, tradition and innovation, a constant dialogue between heredity and future. A brilliant mind and a creative personality, attentive to the past and to the culture of his country. Able to create and transmit emotions through his floors, which decorate some of the loveliest and most elegant homes in the world. Carlo Apollo, with a designer’s creativity, is able to see beyond the raw material and to bring wood back to life. Not an easy task if you’re not in love with the materials that you caress and transform. Inside ancient dwellings and forgotten churches, he finds beams and panels dating back to a remote past, thus guaranteeing the uniqueness of each single piece.

Naturally, the type of wood and the quantity are limited according to the location. The wood is transported to his laboratory of wonders and subjected to specific treatments, and this is where its fibrous heart starts to beat, transformed, enriched, changed on the outside and intact on the inside. An art, in which the details are fundamental: each element must blend with the others to reveal all the strength, a labor in which the design is studied down to the invisible details. Each step is taken under Apollo’s vigilant control, he supervises the work from the beginning to the end. Because the value and the beauty of theplanks can be transfused directly from the designer to the buyer.

LUXURY NEWS PERFUMES / OLIVIER DURBANO E “PARFUMS DE PIERRE POÈMS” Incontrarlo ed intervistarlo è stato un onore. È una persona speciale, ha un'aura magnetica, occhi trasparenti e un sorriso appassionato. Fin dalle sue prime parole 'passa' la sua profondità d'animo, una grande spiritualità e passione per la vita e ciò che fa. Olivier ci racconta che dopo gli studi in architettura ha imparato a creare, ha iniziato a occuparsi di decorazioni e solo ad un certo punto della sua vita ha compreso che il suo amore per le pietre lo stava conducendo verso nuovi mondi. Una passione viscerale e Olivier Durbano. istintiva, ci dice che per studiarle al meglio, ci si addormentava accanto.

Olivier racconta che dopo un viaggio in Siria, ventenne, realizzò il suo primo girocollo con bellissime pietre provenienti da quelle terre e così gli amici lo spinsero a creare la sua prima collezione di circa 30 modelli che fu subito sold out, acquistata per intero da un concept store di Lione. “Da lì ho sentito fortissimo il bisogno di raccontare ogni pietra accostandola ad una fragranza...” così è nato il percorso dei suoi profumi Parfums de Pierre Poèms, distribuiti in Italia da Kaon. In ogni creazione c'è visibile la pietra a cui si ispira e sentirete davvero l'universo che racconta.

Quando gli chiedo cosa è per te il lusso? Ci risponde: “Lusso è poter condividere con le altre persone ciò che amiamo, le relazioni umane, l'arte e la bellezza sono il vero lusso della vita.” Olivier ritiene che la vita sia un gioco, con questo spirito si è accostato al mondo delle fragranze. La sua sfida è scoprirne l'evoluzione anno dopo anno, nel raccontare in un profumo la magia unica di ogni pietra e scoprire ciò che c'è dietro.

Questo percorso è una sorta di ricerca della pietra filosofale, è un ritorno simbolico alle origini. Ci dice che il suo è un bisogno, sente di dover dare forma olfattiva agli opposti, alla luce e al buio, all'energia. Tutto questo è “Parfums de Pierre Poèms” e il meraviglioso viaggio della vita di Olivier Durbano.

OLIVIER DURBANO AND “PARFUMS DE PIERRE POÈMS” It was an honor to meet and inerview him. He’s a special person, with a magnetic aura, clear eyes and a captivating smile.

With the first few words he utters you feel the profundity of his soul, a great spirituality and passion for life and for what he does. Olivier tells us that following his studies in architecture he learned how to “create”, he began by dedicating himself to decorations and only at a certain point in his life did he understand that his love for semi-precious stones was taking him towards new worlds. An instinctive and visceral passion, he tells us that to better study them he slept beside them. Olivier told us that following a trip to Syria when he was just 20 he realized his first necklace with beautiful stones from those lands and thus his friends encouraged him to create his first collection of 30 or so pieces which was immediately sold out, acquired in block by a concept store in Lyons. “That’s when I felt impelled to tell the story of each stone, linking it with a fragrance...” and so the path of his Parfums de Pierre Poèms was created, distributed in Italy by Kaon. Every stone that inspired him is visible in each creation and you will truly feel the scent of the universe that it tells.

When I ask him, what is luxury for you? He responds: “Luxury is being able to share with others that which we love the most, human relations, art and beauty are the real luxuries of life.” He believes that life is a game, and this is the spirit that guided him in the world of fragrances. His challenge is to discover the evolution, year after year, in putting the unique magic of each stone in a perfume and discovering what’s behind it.

This path is a sort of search for the philosophy stone, it’s a symbolic return to the origins. He tells us that his is a need, he feels that he must give olfactory form to the opposites, to light and darkness, to energy. All of this is “Parfums de Pierre Poèms” and the marvelous life journey of Olivier Durbano.

VILEBREQUIN: SAINT TROPEZ IN ROME With the opening of the second Vilebrequin boutique in the city, the atmosphere of Saint Tropez in the mythical 1970’s comes to Rome. The new advertising campaign tells of renewed simplicity, a return to the origins. This is the essence of luxury for Vilebrequin. We were able to meet Roland Roland Herlory.

Herlory, CEO of Vilebrequin.The epitome of class and charisma, he told us how the art of living in the sun is a true and proper way of life and is part of the brand’s DNA. Always looking ahead, entwining art and photography in 40 years of brand, and many interesting projects.

Not the least of which was the last one conducted by Jacques Costeau: Plant a fish is a long-term project, its objective is to teach consumers not to use turtle eggs, but to understand how the turtles can be a resource. It can also be called an example of Corporate Social Responsibility. The charasmatic Herlory explains that his luxury is ethics, quality and creativity, in that order.

Con la seconda boutique Vilebrequin a Roma, arrivano le atmosfere tropezienne dei mitici anni '70. La nuova campagna adv parla di una ritrovata semplicità, un ritorno alle origini. Questa l'essenza del lusso per Vilebrequin. Abbiamo potuto incontrare Roland Herlory, CEO di Vilebrequin. Con molta classe e carisma ci ha raccontato come l'arte di vivere al sole sia un vero e proprio stile di vita e faccia parte del DNA del Brand. Da sempre all'avanguardia, legandosi all'arte e alla fotografia, in 40 anni di storia del marchio tanti sono stati i progetti interessanti.

Non da ultimo quello seguito con Fabien Cousteau: Plant A Fish (PAF) è un progetto a lungo termine, si propone di insegnare a non utilizzare le uova di tartaruga, anzi a comprendere come le tartarughe possano essere una risorsa. Può dirsi un esempio di Corporate Social Responsibility. Il carismatico Herlory ci spiega che il suo lusso è etica, qualità e creatività, in quest'ordine.

Si descrive dicendoci in poche battute che ama la spiaggia e il mare. Che semplicemente crede con fermezza nell'etica e che senza fantasia non ci sia vita. Si dice molto orgoglioso di questa seconda boutique romana in via del Babuino, della Capsule collection e del percorso fatto, dalla linea di swimwear papà e bimbo fino alla linea mamma e bimba. Ad oggi con dei total look sia maschili che femminili. Con il suo charme e un gran sorriso ci saluta con una promessa: di rivederci nello stesso posto fra qualche anno, per un'intervista in occasione dell'opening del terzo store Vilebrequin a Roma.

He describes himself in a few phrases as one who loves the beach and the sea. That simply put he firmly believes in ethics and that there’s no life without imagination. He says he’s very proud of this second Roman boutique on Via del Babuino, of the Capsule Collection and of the swimwear line for father and son and mother and daughter. Innovative, with that total look, whether masculine or femminine. With his charm and a big smile he bids us farewell with a promise: to see us in the same place a few years from now, for an interview to celebrate the opening of the third Vilebrequin store in Rome.

LUXURY NEWS EVENTS / SECONDA EDIZIONE PREMIO HAUSMANN & CO./PATEK PHILIPPE Il Premio Hausmann & Co./Patek Philippe prosegue quest’anno a finanziare la ricerca oncologica con la 2a edizione, sostenendo l’Istituto Pasteur, Fondazione Cenci Bolognetti e il Dipartimento di Medicina Molecolare de La Sapienza Università di Roma. Per il 2014 Hausmann & Co. e Patek Philippe Italia hanno deciso di sostenere la ricerca con un contributo di 40.000 euro. La scelta d’investire nella ricerca scientifica dedicando un grande impegno in termini di risorse sia economiche che umane, si affianca alla volontà di proseguire un percorso che ha l’obiettivo di sostenere giovani talenti italiani che in qualche modo si sono distinti nell’ambito delle proprie discipline. Il Premio Hausmann & Co./Patek Philippe 2014 è stato consegnato l’11 giugno scorso, in occasione di una serata di gala presso Villa Medici, Accademia di Francia.

La selezione, operata secondo principi trasparenti e oggettivi ha valutato le tre migliori pubblicazioni prodotte nel 2013 da giovani ricercatori che hanno conseguito il titolo di Dottore di ricerca alla Sapienza Università di Roma.

Le pubblicazioni sono state valutate scrupolosamente da un’apposita giuria. I tre giovani vincitori del Premio 2014: Paola Infante, Valeria Purpura e Stefano Sechi sono stati premiati, da Francesco Hausmann, Benedetto Mauro e Laura Gervasoni, con un assegno di studio e un orologio personalizzato. E durante la serata di gala, nella splendida cornice di Villa Medici, oltre 400 invitati hanno avuto la possibilità di toccare con mano la nuova collezione Patek Philippe - Sotto il segno dell’Eccellenza. Alain Le Roy, Ambasciatore di Francia in Italia, ha fatto gli onori di casa. Durante l’evento, attori, attrici e personaggi del mondo imprenditoriale e culturale si sono ritrovati insieme a tutto il mondo accademico più importante di Roma e d’Italia. Le navette, personalizzate Patek Philippe, hanno accompagnato gli ospiti alla splendida terrazza del Belvedere dove è avvenuta la premiazione. Fra i presenti, Carlo Verdone, i fratelli Vanzina, il Principe Torlonia, Giovanni Malagò, Vanessa Gravina e tanti altri.

SECOND EDITION HAUSMANN & CO./PATEK PHILIPPE AWARD The Hausmann & Co./Patek Philippe Award continues this year to finance cancer research with the Second Edition of the Award, supporting the Pasteur Institute - Cenci Bolognetti Foundation and the Department of Molecular Medicine of La Sapienza Università in Rome. In 2014 Hausmann & Co. and Patek Philippe Italia decided to support the research by contributing 40.000 euros. The decision to invest in scientific research, through a serious commitment in terms of economic and human resources, is matched by the intention to pursue a path with the objective of sustaining talented young Italians who in some way have distinguished themselves in the context of their disciplines. The Hausmann & Co./Patek Philippe 2014 Prize was awarded on June 11, during a gala evening at Villa Medici, Accademia di Francia.

The selection, based on transparent and objective regulations, judged the three best publications produced during 2013 by young researchers who earned the title of Doctor in Research from La Sapienza Università of Rome. The publications were evaluated scrupulously by a special jury. The three young winners of the Hausmann & Co./Patek Philippe 2014 Award are: Paola Infante, Valeria Purpura and Stefano Sechi, and were awarded with a check for their studies and a personalized watch by Francesco Hausmann, Benedetto Mauro and Laura Gervasoni. And during the gala evening, in the splendid setting of Villa Medici, more than 400 participants were able to see and touch the new Patek Philippe collection - Under the Sign of Excellence. Alain Le Roy, Ambassador of France to Italy, was the host of the evening.

During the event, actors and actresses and well-known names from the entrepreneurial and cultural fields mingled with top academics from Rome and Italy. Shuttle buses, personalized with the Patek Philippe logo, accompanied guests to the splendid Belvedere Terrace, where the awards were given out. Among those present were Carlo Verdone, the Vanzina brothers, Prince Torlonia, Giovanni Malagò, Vanessa Gravina, to name a few.

LUXURY NEWS FASHION & CINEMA/ CINEMA & MODA AL DE RUSSIE Cinema e moda si incontrano all’Hotel De Russie di Roma, set d’eccezione per la storia raccontata dal servizio fotografico di questo numero di Luxury files che fa rivivere gli anni ‘70, attraverso l’interpretazione di due splendidi attori immersi nell’elegante e unico giardino del De Russie o tra scorci degli ambienti interni, dove design contemporaneo ed architettura classica si fondono, creando atmosfere sofisticate e senza tempo.

Elena Radonicich, attrice dalla bellezza raffinata e dalla carriera sempre più in ascesa, ha avuto un 2013 decisamente ricco dal punto di vista professionale. Cresciuta nella provincia piemontese, si diploma al Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia nel 2009. Dopo diverse esperienze teatrali e televisive esordisce sul grande schermo in Tutti al mare, scritto e diretto da Matteo Cerami. È stata all’ultimo Festival del cinema di Roma con il film Racconti d’amore di Elisabetta Sgarbi che è stato selezionato in concorso presso la prossima edizione del Festival di Roma, nella sezione Cinema XXI. Lo stesso Festival l’anno prima l’aveva vista protagonista accanto a Charlotte Rampling in Tutto parla di te di Alina Marazzi. Nell’autunno scorso Elena è stata una delle protagoniste di Altri tempi di Marco Turco e di Adriano Olivetti, la forza di un sogno insieme a Luca Zingaretti, nel quale interpretava la moglie di Olivetti. Sarà presto al cinema con Italo, protagonista insieme a Marco Bocci. Ed è attualmente sul set di tre film: per il grande schermo sta girando Alaska di Claudio Cupellini e Senza lasciare traccia di Gianclaudio Cappai e per la tv La freccia del sud di Ricky Tognazzi.

Giorgio Lupano nasce artisticamente come attore di teatro, lavora poi anche per il cinema e per la televisione. Uno dei suoi primi ruoli importanti è nel 2000, quando è tra i protagonisti del film Il manoscritto del principe, diretto da Roberto Andò. Nel 2004 è nuovamente sul grande schermo con i film E ridendo l’uccise di Florestano Vancini e Sotto falso nome di Roberto Andò. Diversi i ruoli interpretati per il piccolo schermo: ha recitato nel film tv Regina dei fiori (2005), in R.I.S. 4 - Delitti imperfetti (2007) e nella miniserie tv La stella della porta accanto (2008). Nel 2012 è protagonista de Il paese delle piccole piogge di Sergio Martino e di K2 di Robert Dornhelm, mentre nel 2013 torna in tv con Paura di amare 2. Prossimamente sarà nel cast de Il restauratore 2, diretto da Enrico Oldoini e Francesca Marra. Dal 2009 è regista ed interprete di Maratona di New York di Edoardo Erba. Nel 2013 è in Elephant Man, scritto e diretto da Giancarlo Marinelli. Con lo stesso regista sarà in scena nella stagione 2014-15 in Doppio Sogno tratto da Schnitzler, affiancato da Caterina Murino.

CINEMA & FASHION AT DE RUSSIE Cinema and fashion meet at the Hotel De Russie in Rome, an exceptional background for the story told by the series of pictures in this issue of Luxury Files, to brink back the flavor of the 1970’s through the poses of Elena Radonicich and Giorgio Lupano, set in the elegant and unique garden of the De Russie or indoors, in which contemporary design and classical architecture blend together, creating sophisticated and timeless atmospheres.

Elena Radonicich is an elegantly beautiful actress whose career is steadily growing and 2013 was particularly rich from a professional point of view. She grew up in Piedmont and obtained her diploma from the Cinematography Experimental Center in 2009. Following a number of theater and television experiences, she debuted in movies in Tutti al mare, written and directed by Matteo Cerami. She was at the recent Festival of Cinema in Rome with Racconti d’amore by Elisabetta Sgarbi, which was selected to compete in the next Festival of Cinema in Rome, in the Cinema XXI sector. The previous year one of her films was shown at the same Festival, in which she starred with Charlotte Rampling in Tutto parla di te by Alina Marazzi. Last fall Elena was one of the leading ladies in Altri tempi by Marco Turco and in Adriano Olivetti, la forza di un sogno together with Luca Zingaretti, in which she played Olivetti’s wife. She will soon be in movie theaters in a starring role in Italo, with Marco Bocci. And at the present time she is working on three sets: she’s filming Alaska by Claudio Cupellini and Senza lasciare traccia by Gianclaudio Cappai for movie distribution and La freccia del sud by Ricky Tognazzi for TV. Giorgio Lupano began his artistic career in the theater and then worked both for movies and television. One of his first important roles was in 2000, when he was one of the leading men in the movie Il manoscritto del principe, directed by Roberto Andò. In 2004 he was once again in movie theaters with E ridendo l’uccise by Florestano Vancini and Sotto falso nome by Roberto Andò. He also played many roles for television: he was a member of the cast of the TV movie Regina dei fiori (2005), in the television series R.I.S. 4 Delitti imperfetti (2007) and in the television mini-series La stella della porta accanto (2008). In 2012 he starred in Il paese delle piccole piogge by Sergio Martino and in K2 by Robert Dornhelm, while in 2013 he returned to TV with Paura di amare 2. We will soon see him in the cast of Il restauratore 2, directed by Enrico Oldoini and Francesca Marra. From 2009 directed and starred in Maratona di New York by Edoardo Erba. In 2013 he appeared in Elephant Man, written and directed by Giancarlo Marinelli. With the same director he will be on stage for the 2014-15 in Doppio Sogno taken from a work by Schnitzler, together with Caterina Murino.

LUXURY NEWS EVENTS / CINEMA DIETRO LE QUINTE Dopo il suo debutto nel 2013, il Kineo Agent Award, è lo speciale riconoscimento, che si inserisce nella dodicesima edizione del Premio Kineo Diamanti al Cinema, dedicato agli agentirappresentanti di artisti che si sono distinti per meriti specifici. Il KAA, ideato e coordinato da Daniele Orazi, Vice Presidente di L.A.R.A. (Libera Associazione Rappresentanti Artisti) e socio fondatore del Consorzio Officine Artistiche, vede la partecipazione di una nutrita giuria composta da figure professionali come casting director, produttori, organizzatori e aiuti registi, che saranno chiamati a dare il loro giudizio. Dopo aver invitato i giurati ad esprimere la propria preferenza in via telematica, il progetto è stato presentato alla stampa nell’ambito del festival di Cannes. In occasione del Taormina FilmFestival saranno noti i nomi dei cinque finalisti. A settembre, durante la Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia, avrà luogo la cerimonia di premiazione. Kineo è un’Associazione Culturale che promuove l’arte e la cultura attraverso l’organizzazione, la promozione e la comunicazione di progetti che possibilmente vedano interagire soggetti privati con Associazioni e Istituzioni.

Kineo, insieme al Ministero per i Beni e le AttivitàCulturali, ha voluto trovare un nuovo modo per valorizzare la nostra cinematografia ad essere al contempo ambasciatrice di cultura e capace di attrarre il pubblico.

CINEMA BEHIND THE SCENES Following its debut in 2013, the Kineo Agent Award is the special recognition that is part of the twelfth edition of the Kineo Diamonds at the Cinema Award, dedicated to the agents/representatives of artists who have distinguished themselves for special merits. The KAA, conceived and coordinated by Daniele Orazi, Vice President of L.A.R.A. (Libera Associazione Rappresentanti Artisti) and founding member of Consorzio Officine Artistiche, counts on the participation of a broad-based jury composed of professional figures such as casting directors, producers, organizers and deputy-directors, who will be called upon to express their vote. After inviting the jury to express their vote electronically, the project was presented to the press during the Cannes Festival. During the Taormina FilmFestival the names of the five finalists will be revealed.

The awards ceremony will take place in September, during the International Venice Film Festival. Kineo is a cultural association that promotes art and culture through the organization, promotion and communication of projects that hopefully see private subjects interact with associations and institutions. Kineo, together with the Ministry of Fine Arts and Cultural Activities, wanted to find a new way to valorize our cinematography and at the same time be an ambassador of culture and be able to attract the public.

I Top of the shorTS, i migliori cortometraggi provenienti da tutti gli angoli del pianeta, si contenderanno il premio Punto Enel al miglior corto di 10.000 euro assegnata da una giuria ad hoc e molti altri riconoscimenti. I premi saranno assegnati dalla Giuria Internazionale dei Cortometraggi composta da Benjamin Freidenberg, Nicolas Ronchi, Dirk Vogel, Monique Catalano e Cinzia Spironello. E poi il premio al miglior corto d’animazione, al miglior montaggio italiano e il premio Piquadro. Per la sezione Nuove Imprese verranno proiettate delle opere prime di lungometraggi italiani. Protagonista della retrospettiva 2014 del festival sarà la splendida Francesca Neri, attrice e produttrice, vincitrice di due Nastri d’Argento come miglior attrice protagonista. Invece per prospettiva 2014, lo spazio dedicato agli attori italiani emergenti, sarà protagonista la giovane e talentuosa Elena Radonicich. Quest’anno come focus dedicato alla cinematografia di un Paese extraeuropeo è stato scelto il Giappone: durante il festival saranno proposti una selezione di cortometraggi del Paese del Sol Levante. Tra le tante novità un pacchetto turistico, che darà la possibilità di assistere al festival e visitare la città di Trieste sotto un profilo insolito, quello dei luoghi del cinema.

SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2014 The International ShorTS Film Festival (june 28/july 5), the festival dedicated to short films organized by Maremetraggio, celebrates its XV edition from June 28 through July 5 in Trieste.

The Top of the shorTS, the best short films from the four corners of the world, will compete for the Francesca Neri.

Punto Enel award of 10,000 euros awarded by a jury ad hoc and many other awards. The awards will be presented by the International Jury of Short Films composed of Benjamin Freidenberg, NicolasRonchi, Dirk Vogel, Monique Catalano and CinziaSpironello. And then the award for the best short cartoon, the best Italian editing and the Piquadro Award. For the section New Undertakings, first works of Italian full-length films will be shown. Protagonistof the 2014 retrospective will be the splendid Francesca Neri, actress and producer, winner of two Silver Ribbons as best starring actress.

Instead, for the 2014 prospective, the space dedicated to emerging Italian talent, the protagonist will be the young and talented Elena Radonicich. This year Japan has been selected for the focus on the cinematography of a non-European country: during the festival a selection of short films from the land of the rising sun will be shown.Amongst the new items, a tourism package, which will offer the possibility of participating in the Festival and visiting the city of Trieste under an unusual profile, that of cinema locations.

Ingredienti per 4 persone 1 capocollo di maialino Verdure di stagione Foglie di alloro Rosmarino Anice stellato Bacche di ginepro Sale e pepe In un sacchetto da sottovuoto inserire il capocollo di maialino con rosmarino, alloro, pepe, anice stellato e ginepro.

Chiudere il sacchetto e cuocere in forno per dodici ore a bassa temperatura (76°). Trascorso il tempo necessario, togliere la carne dal sacchetto, eliminare le spezie e metterla in padella con la cotenna in basso. Rosolare bene a fuoco vivo fino a quando la cotenna diventa croccante. Saltare le verdure separatamente con un filo di olio. Servire il maialino con le verdure di stagione.

Ingredients for 4 persons 1 piglet (maialino) Seasonal vegetables Bay leaves Rosemary Star anise Juniper berries Salt and pepper Place the piglet together with the rosemary, bay leaves, pepper, star anise and juniper in a zip-lock bag and close it.Cook in the oven for twelve hours at a low temperature (76°). When the time is up, remove the meat from the bag, eliminate the spices and place the meat in a pan with the rind on the bottom. Brown well with a strong flame until the rind becomes crispy. Sauté the vegetables separately with a bit of oil. Serve the piglet with the seasonal vegetables.

Soprattutto nell’era del web 2.0, in cui le marche vengono messe a nudo, esposte continuamente a commenti e critiche e il passaparola corre su Facebook e Twitter. Il nuovo consumatore è sempre più informato: sa quel che cerca e non ci sta a comprare un prodotto solo perché glielo dice la pubblicità. Allora il lusso guadagna una nuova identità, in un’ottica sempre più personalizzata ed esclusiva che favorisce lo scambio di valori tra individuo e marca. Magari non sarà una parure di Van Cleef, ma giusto un portachiavi o un occhiale griffato. Acquistarlo però non significa togliersi uno sfizio ma è un modo per raggiungere un traguardo ben più ambito: costruire e stabilizzare la propria identità. E imparare ad apprezzarsi di più. Quali sono i settori merceologi più interessanti per il Made in Italy all'estero?

L’Italia è la seconda economia manifatturiera d’Europa.

Negli ultimi tre anni l’export italiano è cresciuto più di quello francese o tedesco. Abbiamo alcune eccellenze assolute. In termini di volume la prima voce è rappresentata dai macchinari. È fortissima nel vino e cibo, nella moda, nell’arredamento e nel design. Ma non solo: nell’ultimo anno siamo cresciuti soprattutto nel farmaceutico e biomedicale; nuovi settori come l’aerospazio sono altrettanto dinamici.

Il secondo semestre del 2014 prevede numerose iniziative di promozione del Made in Italy all'estero, in particolare per quel che concerne il settore moda. Può svelarci qualcosa in più a riguardo?

Il tessile-abbigliamento costituisce un settore di grande rilievo economico per l’Italia: si tratta infatti del terzo settore manifatturiero, che conta ancora oggi oltre 420.000 addetti e più di 50.000 aziende attive sul territorio: l’Italia è il terzo esportatore mondiale di tessili-abbigliamento dopo Cina e Germania. Il settore tradizionalmente genera un surplus della bilancia commerciale, secondo soltanto a quello della meccanica. Il sistema deve la sua competitività a livello internazionale agli investimenti in innovazione, alla ricerca e sviluppo del prodotto, al know how e alla sinergica collaborazione fra le diverse fasi della filiera sino all’integrazione con il retail. Nel corso dell’anno sono state avviate centinaia di attività a sostegno di un ulteriore radicamento delle imprese nazionali sui mercati esteri. In particolare, mi preme segnalare lo sforzo, mai così grande prima d'ora, che stiamo facendo in occasione del 60° anniversario del Centro di Firenze Città per la Moda Italiana e che sta portando in Italia moltissimi buyer; o le iniziative, rivolte al sistema moda allargato, propedeutiche ad un altro grande avvenimento: l’accordo di libero scambio UE-USA, da cui il nostro export trarrà beneficio più di quello di qualunque altro paese europeo.

What are the most interesting commodity sectors for Made in Italy abroad?

Italy is the second manufacturing economy in Europe. In the past three years Italian exports have grown more than French or German exports. We have a number of absolute excellences. In terms of volume the first item is represented by machinery. Exports are strong for wine and food, fashion, furnishings and design. But not only: in the past year we grew primarily in the pharmaceutical and biomedical areas; new sectors such as aerospace are equally dynamic.

In the second semester of 2014 numerous promotional initiatives are scheduled for Made in Italy abroad, in particular for the fashion sector. Can you reveal any details?

The textile-clothing market constitutes an extremely important economic sector for Italy: in fact it is the third manufacturing sector, and numbers more than 420,000 workers and there are in excess of 50,000 businesses active in the country: Italy is the third world exporter of textiles and clothing after China and Germany. This sector traditionally generates a surplus for the balance of payments, second only to that of mechanics. The system owes its competitivity on an international level to investments in innovation, to research and development, to know-how and to the synergy amongst those involved in the various steps up to the integration with the retail sector. This year alone hundreds of activities were started to support an ulterior consolidation of domestic undertakings in foreign markets. In particular, I want to stress the efforts, never greater than now, that we are making for the 60th anniversary of the Centro di Firenze Città per la Moda Italiana and which is attracting numerous buyers to Italy; or the initiatives aimed at the enlarged fashion sector, useful for another important purpose: the treaty for the free exchange of goods between the European Union and the United States, from which our export data will benefit more than any other European country.

Il mercato cinese dell'arredamento sta mostrando interessanti potenziali di sviluppo per i produttori italiani, con un interscambio che ha registrato nel primo trimestre del 2014 un incremento su base annua intorno al 30%. Come state operando a riguardo?

Oltre alla tradizionale attività di assistenza alle nostre imprese, alle fiere e alle missioni imprenditoriali e di sistema, abbiamo progettato un pacchetto integrato di iniziative promozionali allo scopo di consolidare e promuovere l’immagine del Made in Italy presso trend-setter, opinion leader, architetti ed operatori professionali cinesi attraverso investimenti in comunicazione e promozione commerciale che garantiscano massima visibilità mediatica.

Nell'ultimo quinquennio la quota di esportazione del Made in Italy si è ridotta in modo notevole in Europa quale ovvia conseguenza di contingenze economicopolitiche. Contestualmente avete promosso molto l'export verso i cosiddetti mercati meno maturi. Può dirci se l'Ice prevede delle attività finalizzate a 'recuperare' la situazione nei paesi europei?

I dati degli ultimi mesi dimostrano, al contrario, una forte ripresa del nostro export nei Paesi a noi più vicini, in particolare in Germania.

Come figura di riferimento del Made in Italy all'estero, quale la domanda più frequente che le viene posta dai nostri imprenditori e di contro dagli investitori esteri?

Chiunque incontro, ovunque mi trovi nel mondo, è affascinato dal Made in Italy e la domanda che mi pongono più frequentemente è proprio come fare a possederlo. Le possibilità dei prossimi dieci anni sono ineguagliabili.

Con quasi un miliardo di nuovi cittadini di classe media nel mondo la domanda per i nostri prodotti aumenterà vertiginosamente. Allo stesso tempo, oggi come non mai l’Italia fa sistema per cogliere queste occasioni: Governo, Enti Locali, associazioni private, lavorano insieme per portare 70mila nuove imprese ad esportare, per facilitare la vita degli investitori che vengono in Italia. Nuove riforme del lavoro e del credito sono approvate o in fase di approvazione per migliorare l’atmosfera di business.

Nonostante le difficoltà degli ultimi vent’anni in tantissimi settori l’Italia innova e brilla. Con meno difficoltà sarà una protagonista della globalizzazione.

The Chinese furniture market is showing interesting potential for development for Italian manufacturers, with sales registered in the first quarter of 2014 showing an increase on an annual basis of around 30%. What are you doing in this context?

In addition to the assistance we have traditionally provided to our businesses, at exhibitions and during entrepreneurial and system missions, we have planned an integrated package of promotional initiatives aimed at consolidating and promoting the image of Made in Italy with trendsetters, opinion leaders, architects and professional Chinese operators through investments in communication and commercial promotions that guarantee maximum media visibility.

In the last five years the export share of Made in Italy decreased considerably in Europe as the obvious result of the economic-political situation. At the same time, you heavily promoted exports towards the so-called less mature markets. Can you tell us whether ICE has planned any initiatives aimed at “salvaging” the situation in Europe?

The data from the last few months indicates, instead, a strong upturn in our exports to the countries closest to us, in particular to Germany.

As the reference point for Made in Italy abroad, what is the question you are most often asked by our entrepreneurs and by foreign investors?

Anyone I meet, wherever I am in the world, is fascinated

by Made in Italy and the question I am asked most often is how can they have it. The possibilities for the next ten years are unimaginable. With nearly a billion new middleclass citizens in the world, the demand for our products will go sky high. At the same time, today as never before Italy sticks together to take advantage of these opportunities: the government, local agencies, private associations, all work together to help 70,000 new enterprises export their goods, to faclitate the life of those investors who come to Italy. New forms of work and credit have been approved or are being approved to improve the business atmosphere. Notwithstanding the difficulties encountered in the last two decades, Italy innovates and shines in many sectors. With fewer difficulties it will be a leader of globalization.

Una domanda che poniamo sempre ai nostri interlocutori. Quale la sua definizione di lusso?

Per me il lusso è sinonimo di grande qualità, tradizione del territorio, cultura millenaria, curiosità per le novità, slancio verso il futuro, capacità di inventare. Caratteristiche che solo chi produce nel nostro Paese e i nostri prodotti hanno.

Che importanza può avere a suo avviso per le aziende italiane una rivista come Luxury files, che da 15 anni si propone di promuovere le eccellenze italiane nel mondo e nel nostro paese?

L’Italia ha tantissimo da donare al mondo in termini di cultura, stile di vita, tecnologia, creatività. L’Italia è un posto in cui vivere con speranza e voglia di fare, voglia di raggiungere i propri sogni di crescita economica, sociale, culturale. L’Italia trova il suo posto naturale in una economia e una società aperta perché l’idea stessa di Italia è legata al continuo scambio e confronto con il resto del mondo.

What is your definition of luxury?

For me, luxury is synonymous of absolute quality, territorial tradition, age-old culture, curiosity for innovations, leaping towards the future, the ability to invent.

Characteristics that only those who produce in our country and our products possess.

In your opinion, is a magazine such as Luxury Files, which for 15 years has promoted Italian excellence in the world and in our country, important for Italian businesses?

Italy has a lot to offer the world in terms of culture, way of life, technology, creativity. Italy is a place to live with hope and the desire to make a difference, desire to reach one’s dreams of economic, social, cultural growth. Italy finds its natural place in an open economy and society because the idea itself of Italy is linked to the constant demand/offer and comparison with the rest of the world.

Come descriveresti il tuo stile? Sportivo,rigoroso, all’avanguardia o elegante?

Di solito ho uno stile casual quando non lavoro, ma in ogni momento, che sia vestita in maniera casual o elegante, devo sentirmi bene con quello che indosso.

Come scegli gli accessori da indossare?

Il mio must è less is more. Ritengo che gli accessori dovrebbero essere un complemento di quello che si indossa, non caricare troppo l’outfit. Questo è quello che amo dello stile Tag Heuer, elegante ma sobrio.

Qual è la tua definizione di lusso?

Lusso è tutto quello che ti fa stare bene. Per me il lusso è questione di qualità, non di stravaganza.

Il lusso di cui non puoi fare a meno.

Il lusso del tempo. Quando non lavoro adoro rilassarmi e rendermi conto di non essere di fretta.

Qual è la sfida più importante della tua vita e quale sarà la prossima?

Considero le sfide come un’opportunità per crescere e imparare. Penso che la carriera che sto vivendo sia un grande regalo e cerco sempre di non perdere di vistaquanto sia fortunata a poter fare ciò che faccio. Non vedo l’ora di trovare sempre nuove possibilità di esprimere me stessa creativamente e di condividere quello che ho imparato con gli altri.

And this partnership contributed to support and attract international attention to the programs in favor of female empowerment, including those promoted by the new UN entity: UN Women.

During a recent interview, Cameron Diaz made some statements concerning her life style and her concept of luxury.

How would you describe your style? Sporty, classic, avant-garde or elegant?

I generally dress very casual when I’m not working, but at all times, whether dressed casually or elegantly, I have to feel good with what I’m wearing.

How do you chose your accessories?

My motto is less is more. I believe that accessories should be a complement to what one wears, and not over-burden an outfit. This is what I love about the Tag Heuer style, elegant but sober.

What is your definition of luxury?

Luxury is everything that makes you feel good. For me luxury is a matter of quality, not of extravagance.

A luxury you cannot do without?

The luxury of time. When I’m not working I love to relax and realize that I don’t need to hurry.

What is/was the most important challenge in your life and what will the next one be?

I consider challenges as an opportunity to grow and learn. I think that the career that I’m living is a great gift and I always try not to forget how lucky I am to be able to do what I do. I always look forward to new ways of expressing myself creatively and to sharing what I’ve learned with others.

What is your philosophy of life?

Always be grateful.

Il mio rapporto con il lusso è di divertimento. Ho frequentato nella mia vita zone di lusso che mi hanno fatto sentire a mio agio (non c’è nulla a cui ci si abitui tanto velocemente), zone in cui ho sentito il privilegio di potermi occupare di ciò che è bello in quanto superfluo, molto lontano dall’essere necessario. Eppure essere a contatto con il lusso quotidianamente credo possa inficiare quasi del tutto il goderne. Per me è eccezione, sproporzione tra bellezza e necessità, gioco. È solo questa la via in cui lo concepisco. Perciò entrare in una realtà lussuosa come questa è stato bello per me, inusuale. Il fotografo mi ha lasciata libera di capire cosa mi succedeva con questi abiti meravigliosi addosso, in questo contesto così equilibrato e ci siamo sentiti liberi. My relationship with the luxury is fun. In my life I’ve frequented luxury areas that made me feel quite at ease (there’s nothing else that you get used to quite so quickly), areas in which I felt privileged to be able to dedicate myself to that which is beautiful insasmuch as superfluous, very far from being necessary. And yet being in contact with luxury on a daily basis I believe can practically completely invalidate the enjoyment. For me it’s exception, disproportion between beauty and necessity, a game.

This is the only way that I can conceive it. Consequently, entering a luxurious reality such as this was beautiful for me, unusual. The photographer left me free to understand what was happening to me with these marvelous clothes I was wearing, in this ever so balanced context, we felt free. A splendid example of fun!

Penso al lusso come ad concetto soggettivo, variabile e non necessariamente costoso: oggi il lusso per me è poter fare a meno di qualcosa, non dover dipendere dal giudizio degli altri o potermene andare da un posto se non mi sento a mio agio.

Naturalmente quello del lusso è anche un business, una fetta importante del mercato del Made in Italy, un patrimonio da salvaguardare senza per forza esserne assoggettati: un bell'orologio per me è il risultato del lavoro di designer e operai specializzati, non un modo per far vedere agli altri quanto valgo. Ecco, ridare alle cose il loro giusto valore: anche questo è un lusso.

La giornata all'Hotel de Russie è stata interessante: bisogna trovare dentro di sé la capacità di racchiudere in un momento la stessa carica emotiva di una scena girata, per poi resettare e ricominciare. L’attesa tra uno scatto e l’altro, la ricerca dell’ispirazione da parte del fotografo, il prepararsi in pochi istanti per non perdere l’attimo giusto anche dopo una lunga pausa, sono sfide che trovano il loro compimento solo a servizio completato: raccontare una storia con sole immagini ha la stessa forza di un film d’autore, e dare tutto se stesso in uno scatto regala la stessa soddisfazione di un applauso del proprio pubblico in un teatro gremito.

I think of luxury as a subjective concept, variable and not necessarily costly: today luxury for me is being able to do without something, not having to depend on the opinion of others or being able to leave somewhere if I’m not at easethere.

Naturally, luxury is also a business, an important slice of theMade in Italy market, a heritage to be safeguarded without necessarily being subject to it: for me, a nice watch is the result of a designer and specialized workers, not a way to show others my worth. There, then, giving things their true value: this too is luxury.

The day spent at the Hotel de Russie was interesting: one must find within oneself the strength to capture in an instant the same emotional charges of the scene shot, to then reset and start all over. The wait between one shot and the next,the photographer’s search for inspiration, taking only a few moments to get ready in order not to lose the right instant, even after a lengthy pause, these are the challenges that will only be fulfilled once the shooting has ended: telling a story with only images has the same power of a creative film, and giving one’s all in one shot gives the same satisfaction as applause by one’s public in a packed theater.

Ci racconta le tappe salienti di questo percorso e cosa c’è ancora oggi di quello spirito artigianale da cui è nato il marchio Fabi?

La Fabi nasce nel 1965, a Montegranaro nel cuore del distretto calzaturiero Marchigiano, una piccola realtà imprenditoriale dall’impronta artigiana, fondata da mio papà e mio zio, Elisio ed Enrico Fabi.

Sono poi bastati pochi anni per affermare il carattere imprenditoriale di questa azienda. Fattore determinante è stato una spiccata capacità nel conciliare tradizione ed innovazione. Gli anni ‘80 poi hanno segnato la base di un successo ormai affermato, che ha spinto l’impresa ad ampliare i propri orizzonti alla ricerca di mercati emergenti, grazie anche alla continua volontà di mirare ad obbiettivi sempre più ambiziosi. Tra il ‘93 e il ‘94 nasce la collezione Fabi Donna: metropolitana, glamour e ricercata. L’affermazione del brand in continua evoluzione è ormai assodata. Ed è così, che da quasi mezzo secolo, Fabi firma calzature di classe per uomo e per donna. Oggi Fabi è autorevole ambasciatore del “Made in Italy” attraverso i suoi 4 brand: gli storici Fabi e Barracuda e gli ultimi due nati Mon Amour e I am B. Can you tell us the salient points of this journey and what remains today of the entrepreneurial spirit that led to the Fabi brand?

Fabi was founded in 1965, in Montegranaro, in the heart of the shoe-making district of the Marche, a small entrepreneurial business with solid artisan roots, founded by my father and my uncle, Elisio and Enrico Fabi.

It only took a few years for the entrepreneurial character of this company to emerge. A determining factor was the pronounced gift for reconciling tradition with innovation. The1980’s marked the basis of a consolidated success, which spurred the business to broaden its horizons, seekingdeveloping markets, also thanks to the continued desire to reach ever more ambitious achievements. 19931994 saw the birth of the Fabi Donna collection: metropolitan, glamorousand refined. The affirmation of the brand in continuous evolution is a reality. And so, for nearly half a century, FABIis synonymous of fine footwear for men and women. TodayFABI is an authoritative ambassador for “Made in Italy”through its four brand names: the historical Fabi andBarracuda and the two recent additions, Mon Amour and I am B. In keeping with its origins, the entire production process takes place in our facilities, thanks to know-how based on craftsmen and techniques that we have developed and grown over the years in our company.

Finora l’azienda ha puntato molto sui mercati esteri dove vanta una grande brand awareness. La scelta della recente apertura del ‘Palazzo Fabi’, una splendida boutique di 700 mq a via del Babuino - una delle più importanti vie dello shopping haute de gamme di Roma - segna un momento importante e rappresenta un cambio strategico?

Gli obiettivi base fissati per il biennio sono internazionalizzazione e relativa ripartizione di rischio paese, identità del brand e selezione del retailer. A questi obiettivi è strettamente legato un progetto di nuove aperture.

Palazzo Fabi è parte di questo processo di espansione che interessa molte aree del mondo: oltre a Roma, sono già stati aperti i monobrand di Bucarest, Kuwait, New Delhi, 2 a Shanghai e per la prossima stagione invernale avremo Delhi, Pechino, Varsavia, Teheran, Abu Dhabi, Jedda e Londra. In Cina la divisione abbigliamento ha aperto nel periodo marzo/maggio 3 negozi nuovi a Shanghai, Shenyang, Changsha e altri 3 verranno aperti nella stagione invernale di quest’anno. Roma rappresenta un biglietto da visita. Avere uno spazio così di prestigio nella capitale italiana è stata una scelta coraggiosa ma in linea con il nostro senso di essere ambasciatori del Made in Italy.

Until now the company has concentrated its efforts onforeign markets, where it boasts significant brand awareness. The decision for the recent opening of ’Palazzo Fabi’, a splendid 700 square meter boutique on Via del Babuino, one of the most important haute degamme shopping streets in Rome, marks an important landmark and represents a change in strategy?

The primary objectives established for 2014-2015 are internationalization and the relative sharing of country risk,brand identity and selection of the retailer. A plan for the opening of new points is closely linked to this project.

Palazzo Fabi is part of this expansion process that involves many parts of the world: in addition to Rome, mono-brand points have already been opened in Bucharest, Kuwait, New Delhi, 2 in Shanghai and for the next winter season we will add Delhi, Beijing, Warsaw, Teheran, Abu Dhabi, Jeddahand London.

During the period March/May the clothing division opened three new stores in Shanghai, Shenyang andChangsha and an additional three will be added this coming winter. Rome represents our visiting card.

Having such a prestigious space in the capital of Italy was a courageous decision but in keeping with our sense of being ambassadors of Made in Italy.

L’azienda negli anni ha dato vita a quattro linee/marchi indipendenti che si rivolgono a target differenti. Può descriverci qualcosa in più a riguardo? A grandi linee quali sono le peculiarità di ciascun brand?

Fabi e Barracuda sono i marchi storici. Il primo orientato al classico, elegante ed esigente. Un prodotto raffinato capace di esprimere stile ed eleganza sia nella scarpa da abito, sia nelle versioni più sportive. Barracuda è un brand di rottura, creativo e ricercato che racconta un mondo ricco di suggestioni, dallo sportivo-urbano al vintage. I nuovi arrivi, Mon Amour e I am B sono figli di una politica di brand stretching, ovvero rappresentano la porta d’ingresso al mondo della nostra Maison.

Nel 2015 Fabi compie 50 anni, un compleanno speciale. Ci può già svelare come festeggerete questo mezzo secolo di storia Fabi?

Non porta bene anticipare un compleanno, posso però dirle che stiamo lavorando ad una nuova linea di profumi che ci avvicinerà a questo importante compleanno: sarà una limited edition e tante altre saranno le sorprese dal nostro mondo. Intanto, già da quest’anno, un piccolo ritorno al futuro lo stiamo gia facendo con Barracuda e la voce di Federico Buffa con un progetto di video story telling chiamato Time Travel Barracuda.

Over the years the company developed four independent lines/brands that are aimed at different targets.

Can you tell us more on this point? Broadly speaking, what are the peculiarities of each brand?

Fabi and Barracuda are historical brand names. The first is oriented towards a classical, elegant and demanding wearer.A refined product that expresses style and elegance both in formal shoes and in the sportier models.

Barracuda broke with tradition, it’s creative and tells of a world full of possibilities, from urban-sporty to vintage.

The newcomers, Mon Amour and I am B, are the result of a brand-stretching policy, that is they represent the entrance to the world of ourmaison.

In 2015 Fabi will celebrate 50 years, a special anniversary. Can you already reveal how you will celebrate this half-century of Fabi history?

It’s bad luck to anticipate an anniversary, however I can say that we’re working on a new line of perfumes that will lead us to this important anniversary: it will be a limited editionand there will also be lots of other surprises from our world. In the meantime, during the course of this year, we’ve already planned a small return to the future with Barracudaand the voice of Federico Buffa, with a project of video story telling called “Time Travel Barracuda”.

Compie 50 anni la Tirelli Costumi, maison per eccellenza fondata da uno dei più apprezzati archeologi della moda, Umberto Tirelli. Appassionato collezionista di abiti antichi, che inizialmente ricercava e acquistava per pura passione proustiana nelle soffitte delle famiglie aristocratiche e sulle bancarelle dei mercati delle pulci di mezzo mondo, il sarto-imprenditore che iniziò il proprio percorso professionale a metà degli anni Cinquanta con Luchino Visconti e Lila De Nobili (che stavano allestendo La traviata di Verdi alla Scala di Milano con Maria Callas protagonista), fondò la propria fabbrica-atelier nel 1964, con uno staff di artigiani creativi e motivati - alcuni dei quali incredibilmente ancora in attività - al servizio del teatro (opera lirica in particolare), e del grande schermo, dove l’originalità del cucito e l’attenta filologia nella precisa ricostruzione di abiti d’epoca le ha valso il tributo di ben 24 nominations e 15 premi Oscar, ultimo dei quali alla carriera di Piero Tosi.

AWARD-WINNING STUDIO Tirelli Costumi, the famous studio/laboratory founded by one of the most widely acclaimed fashion archeologists of all times, Umberto Tirelli, celebrates its 50th anniversary. Impassioned collector of ancient garments, he initially sought out and purchased clothing for pure and Proust-like passion in the attics of aristocratic families and at the flea markets of untold countries. This tailor-entrepreneur began his professional path in the mid 1950’s with Luchino Visconti and Lila De Nobili (who were busy with Verdi’s La traviata at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, starring Maria Callas). He founded his own studio/laboratory in 1964, with a staff of creative and motivated artisans(some of whom incredibly are still at work) at the service of the theater (especially operas) and the silver screen, where the originality of the sewing and the careful philology in the exact reconstruction of period pieces was recognized with 24 Oscar nominations and 15 Oscars, the most recent of which in recognition of Piero Tosi’s career.

Dino Trappetti, grande amico e direttore della Maison dalla scomparsa di Tirelli (1990): come rivive oggi il laboratorio l’insegnamento del suo fondatore?

Se con due macchine da cucire, cinque sarte, una modista, una segretaria e un autista-magazziniere, Tirelli costruì il suo impero, con qualche forbice in più - gli abiti sono tutti rigorosamente tagliati a mano - ed un organico che non è mai diminuito (nonostante la crisi, sono sempre una trentina i dipendenti tra fissi e occasionali), direi che la metodologia di lavoro e il concetto coesivo di squadra rispecchiano oggi come non mai le intenzioni di Umberto. Nessuna tecnologia, ma solo taglio e cucito creativo e curiosa esplorazione nelle mode di ogni Paese ed epoca: io stesso continuo a frequentare mercatini per individuare specifici costumi (anni fa acquistai un intero stock di abiti anni 40) e a ricevere donazioni che stimolano le possibilità di riadattare stoffe, stili e tendenze.

Dino Trappetti, good friend and director of the Maison since the death of Tirelli (1990): how does the laboratory today follow the teachings of its founder?

If with two sewing machines, five seamstresses, a milliner, a secretary and a driver-warehouse keeper, Tirelli was able to build his empire, with a few more scissors (the garments are all exclusively cut by hand) and with a staff that has never diminished (notwithstanding the crisis, there are still about thirty dependents, full- and part-time), I’d say that the work methods and the cohesive concept of the team today reflect Umberto’s intentions as never before. Not technology, just cutting and creative sewing and a curious exploration of fashion in the world and over time: I too still frequent street markets to identify specific costumes (years ago I acquired an entire stock of clothes from the 1940’s) and I still receive donations that stimulate the possibilities of readapting fabrics, styles and trends.

Questa è sicuramente una delle più importanti collezioni private del mondo nel campo del costume e il magazzino è a disposizione dei costumisti per un riutilizzo creativo, alcuni dei quali pescano nel proprio repertorio passato per modernizzarlo/modificarlo a seconda del nuovo spettacolo da vestire. La grande intuizione di Tirelli è stata infatti di non limitarsi a collezionare abiti storici, ma farli rivivere riadattandoli alle esigenze dei suoi collaboratori, artisti come Piero Tosi, Pierluigi Pizzi, Ferdinando Scarfiotti, Gabriella Pescucci, Maurizio Millenotti, Vera Marzot, Hugo De Ana, Sandy Powell, Ann Roth e i giovani Carlo Poggioli, Alessandro Lai e Massimo Cantini Parrini, nati proprio alla bottega Tirelli.

Non solo: la sua generosità (e recondito spirito promozionale) lo hanno spinto ad importanti donazioni ai più prestigiosi Musei del mondo, tra cui il Metropolitan Museum di NewYork, i Tokyo eKyoto Institutes of Costume; Le musée des Arts décoratifs a Parigi e, soprattutto, la Galleria del Costume del Museo degli Argenti di Palazzo Pitti a Firenze che ospita circa 300 costumi.

Di che epoca fanno parte gli abiti in collezione?

Sono circa 10.000 capi autentici di cui 1.000 solo da Museo che coprono vari momenti della storia ma arriviamo fino agli anni Ottanta non solo perché siamo specializzati in abiti d’epoca ma anche perché gli sponsor oggi danno tutto gratuitamente al cinema e non avrebbe senso.

Tra opera lirica e set: quali differenze nella realizzazione dei costumi?

L’opera lirica dev’essere più d’impatto, spettacolare, per cui generalmente i costumi erano realizzati con tessuti che anche da lontano si potevano apprezzare. Nel cinema l’occhio è diverso perché spesso c’è il primo piano e sia i tessuti che i colori devono essere più discreti ma anche più rifiniti. La filologia è sempre dominante, basti pensare a Visconti, un autentico perfezionista: l’armadio in scena doveva essere pieno o un vestito doveva avere cinque sottogonne per alzarlo da terra e farlo restare rigido.

Qual è stato il film con i costumi più difficili da realizzare e quale l’attore più problematico da vestire?

Il film più difficile, io credo, la Medea di Pasolini, dove Tosi ha voluto letteralmente fabbricati dei tessuti disfacendo delle lane e ricostruendoli a mano. Vederli da vicino fa impressione perché non si tratta di stoffe ma di materia, proprio come i gioielli barbarici della protagonista, e le corazze degli Argonauti - strisce di cuoio incastrate una dentro l’altra - che conserviamo come esempio unico di lavorazione.

How do you utilize the thousands of garments in yourFormello laboratory?

This is surely one of the most important private collections in the world in the field of costumes and the warehouse is available to costume-designers for creative re-use, some of whom dig back in their repertoires to renew/modify garments according to the new show or event they have to dress.Tirelli’s greatest intuition in fact was to not limit the collection to historical garments but to make them live again, readapting them to the needs of his collaborators, artists such as Piero Tosi, Pierluigi Pizzi, Ferdinando Scarfiotti, Gabriella Pescucci, Maurizio Millenotti, Vera Marzot, Hugo De Ana, Sandy Powell, Ann Roth and youngsters Carlo Poggioli, Alessandro Lai and Massimo Cantini Parrini, who all started out in Tirelli’s laboratory.

But there’s more: his generosity (and hidden promotional spirit) spurred him towards important donations to the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Tokyo and Kyoto Institutes of Costume; the Museum of Decorative Arts of Paris and,primarily, the Gallery of Costumes of the Museum of Silver in Palazzo Pitti in Florence, which houses approximately 300 costumes.

To which period do the clothes in the collection belong?

There are approximately 10,000 authentic garments, of which just 1,000 are museum pieces that cover various points in time but only up to the 1980’s, not just because we’re specialized in period pieces but also because today the sponsors give everything free of charge to filmmakers and it wouldn’t make sense.

Opera houses and movie sets: what are the differences in realizing the costumes?

Operas must evoke a strong, spectacular impact, so generally the costumes are made with fabrics that even from a distance can be appreciated. In movies, the eye is different because often there’s a close up and the fabrics and colors must be more discreet but at the same time more refined. The philology is still dominant, just think of Visconti, an authentic perfectionist: the closet on the set had to be full or a dress had to have five slips underneath to lift it off the ground and keep it stiff.

Which film had the hardest costumes to make and who was the hardest star to dress?

I think the most difficult movie was Medea by Pasolini, in which Tosi literally wanted to make the fabric, unraveling wool and remaking it by hand. Seeing it up close is startling because it’s not just fabric but matter, just like the barbarian jewels worn by the protagonist, and the Argonaut shields (strips of leather woven together) that we conserve as a unique example of workmanship.

Riguardo agli attori, ricordo personalmente Hellen Mirren che per il film tv La primavera romana della signora Stone di Tennessee William ha provato circa 30 abiti tutti nuovi, e mi hanno anche riferito di uno scontro epocale di Tirelli con Monica Vitti, forse perché entrambi particolarmente esigenti… Per il resto abbiamo sempre soddisfatto i nostri interpreti, da Sophia Loren, che ha tuttora un corpo perfetto per indossare qualunque cosa ad Anthony Hopkins che stette addirittura tre ore in piedi per provarsi un abito!

Quali i prossimi eventi in programma?

In autunno una grande mostra a New York negli spazi del nuovo MOMA e a settembre una bella festa negli ambienti attigui al laboratorio che vedrà maestro cerimoniere Miguel Bosè ed un intero corpo di atleti-artisti americani. Ma prima, già in corso, l’esposizione con i costumi del “Gattopardo” al Palazzo Corvajadi Taormina e la mostra nel foyer della nuova Opera di Firenze in occasione dei 60 anni di Pitti Moda con 8 costumi icone, tra cui L’Età dell’Innocenza della Pescucci, Morte a Venezia di Piero Tosi e Anna Karenina di Maurizio Millenotti, e una mostra a Spoletodedicata allavoro di Tosi per il Festival, dal 28 giugno. Ma anche molta lirica, televisione e cinema: “chicca fra le chicche” il primo film di Matteo Garrone in costume, basato sulla secentesca favola Li Cunto delli Cunti, protagonisti Salma Hayek e Vincent Cassel.

Insomma, una stagione di spunti e almeno un altro mezzo secolo di appassionata attività da non perdere… di vista!

With respect to movie stars, I personally remember Hellen Mirren, who for the film The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone byTennessee Williams tried on about 30 new dresses, and I was also told about an epic argument between Tirelli and MonicaVitti, perhaps because they were both particularly demanding… For the rest, we’ve always satisfied our interpreters, from Sophia Loren, who still has a perfect body and can wear anything, to Anthony Hopkins, who stood on his feet for three hours to be measured for a suit!

What are the forthcoming events on the calendar?

In the fall an important exhibition in New York at the new MOMA and in September a lovely party in the rooms adjacent to the laboratory, with Miguel Bosè as master of ceremonies and a whole group of American athletes/artists. But first, already underway, the exhibition with the costumes from Il Gattopardo at Palazzo Corvajadi Taormina and the exhibition in the foyer of the new Florence Opera House to celebrate 60 years of Pitti Moda with eight iconic costumes, including The Age of Innocence by Pescucci, Death in Veniceby Piero Tosi and Anna Karenina by Maurizio Millenotti,and an exhibition in Spoleto, starting June 28, dedicated toTosi’s work for the Festival. But many operas as well, television and movies: the most exceptional is the first film by Matteo Garrone in costume, based on the medieval fable Li Cunto delli Cunti, starring Salma Hayek and Vincent Cassel.

In brief, a season of ideas and at least another half-century of impassioned activities not to be missed!

Da poco meno di un’anno è iniziata la sua esperienza alla guida di Shiseido Italia, ci racconta qualcosa di questa nuova sfida?

Shiseido è nata nel 1872 in Giappone, ha quasi 150 anni di storia alle spalle. E, in particolare quest’anno, la filiale italiana festeggia mezzo secolo. È chiaro che parliamo di un colosso dal grande passato - impossibile non esserne orgogliosi e non restarne affascinati - ma con ancora un grande futuro da scrivere. Questa può dirsi la mia sfida, portare il marchio Shiseido nel futuro. In particolare poter aiutare il brand ad aprirsi all’Europa. Oggi il fatturato mondiale arriva per il 50% dal Giappone, dove la brand awareness è molto alta ma per l’azienda il mercato italiano rappresenta un ponte fondamentale con l’Europa.

Dunque ho già avviato numerose iniziative in tal senso, al fine di ampliare il pubblico di riferimento e innovare l’immagine e la comunicazione di Shiseido sottolineandone sempre la grande ricerca e supremazia scientifica ma in modo più dinamico, diretto e fresco, anche attraverso la TV o nuovi media come quelli social.

Less than a year has transpired since you took over your position with Shiseido Italy, can you tell us something about this new challenge?

Shiseido was founded in 1872 in Japan, it has nearly 150 years of history to speak for itself. And this year, the Italian branch celebrates half a century. It’s obvious that we’re talking about a colossus with a great past; it’s impossible not to be proud and not to be fascinated, but it still has a great future waiting to be written. This is my challenge, to bring the Shiseido brand into the future. In particular, to help the brand open to Europe. Today, 50% of worldwide sales comes from Japan, where brand awareness is very high, but for the company the Italian market represents a fundamental bridge for Europe. Consequently, I’ve already implemented a number of initiatives in this sense, in order to broaden the reference public and to renew the Shiseido image and communication, always underlining the important research and scientific supremacy but in a more dynamic, direct and fresh manner, whether through TV or the new social media.

Posso dirmi orgoglioso del recente successo di Ibuki, la nuova linea pensata per le donne contemporanee - quelle che noi definiamo slashers per i loro ritmi frenetici e molteplici ruoli quotidiani - che agisce sul ripristinare l’originaria posizione delle cellule che si riallineano e trattengono l’idratazione, rendendo la pelle pronta a ricevere ogni trattamento. Allo stesso modo credo che un marchio di lusso sia tale per i suoi valori ma anche per la sua memorabilità, per le esperienze che riesce a far vivere. E cito un’altra iniziativa interessante a cui abbiamo lavorato quest’anno, che ha generato uno sviluppo del mercato dal suo interno, è stata il Time 4 beauty, un packaging ad hoc con 4 prodotti per un rituale di bellezza completo ma soprattutto un concetto, un messaggio chiave che abbiamo voluto comunicare alle donne: la bellezza è dedicare del tempo a se stesse ogni giorno. Prendersi del tempo per fermare il tempo, compiere pochi gesti per preservare la bellezza che è già insita in ciascuno di noi, sono i principi cardine dell’approccio olistico alla bellezza che contraddistingue Shiseido da sempre e che continueremo a promuovere.

I’m proud of the recent success of Ibuki, the new line created for today’s contemporary women, those whom we define slashers for their frenetic life styles and multitasking. Ibuki acts to re-establish the original position of the cells which thus realign and retain moisture, making the skin ready to receive each new treatment.

Likewise, I believe that a luxury brand is such for its values but also for its memory power, for the experiences that it brings. I’d also like to mention another interesting initiative that we worked on this year, which generated market development from within Time 4 beauty. Ad hoc packaging with 4 products for a complete beauty routine but above all a concept, a key message that we wanted to communicate to women: beauty is dedicating time for ourselves every day. Taking the time to halt time, with a few gestures to preserve the beauty that already exists in each of us, these are the keystones to a holistic approach to beauty that has always distinguished Shiseido and which we will continue to promote.

For now, I can only tell you its code name is ASA, acronym for A Step Ahead. It’s an activator of the immune system and an ulterior confirmation of Shiseido’s excellence. In fact we really are the first to discuss the immune system in a perfume store. Our research tells us that healthy skin depends on the ability of our immune system to preserve it. I can’t tell you much more for now, I can only say that this revolutionary product has been tested by volunteers who personally verified the results. The process involves a triple action: the first level cleanses and rebalances, the second activates and strengthens the immune system, and the third treats dehydrated or ageing skin. Shiseido vanta una storia e dei valori molto forti tanto da poterlo definire un concept brand: dalle sue origini farmaceutiche passando attraverso l’hair styling, il Make Up fino alla Shiseido SPA. Ma forse non tutti sanno che Shiseido a Tokyo vuol dire anche food e gourmet, con i suoi diversi ristoranti Stellati. Possiamo parlare di uno Shiseido lifestyle? È vero nel famoso Shiseido Building a Tokyo, nel quartiere di Ginza, non tutti sanno che oltre ad un beauty bar, ad una Shiseido SPA dove poter provare i trattamenti più lussuosi, c’è anche un piano con la caffetteria o la pasticceria Shiseido. Sono un must i maquillage chocolat, cioccolatini dalle mille nuances esposti come una palette di make up o i famossissimi biscotti a forma di hanatsubaki, la camelia, simbolo del marchio, che ne incarna da sempre la filosofia di bellezza. Così come è poco noto che Shiseido abbia a Tokyo dei ristoranti di proprietà insigniti da varie stelle Michelin. Shiseido boasts such a strong history and strong values that it can be defined a concept brand: from its pharmaceutical origins to hair-styling, from make-up tothe Shiseido Spa. But perhaps not everyone knows that in Tokyo Shiseidoalso means food and gourmet, with its numerous renowned restaurants. Can we call it Shiseido lifestyle?

It’s true, in the famous Shiseido Building in Tokyo, in theGinza area, not everyone knows that in addition to a beauty bar and a Shiseido Spa with the most luxurious treatments, there is also a floor with the Shiseido cafeteria and the pastry shop. The chocolate maquillage is a must, as are the many-hued chocolates displayed like a make-up palette, or the famous cookies in the shape of a hanatsubaki, the camellia,the brand’s symbol, which has always symbolized the philosophy of beauty. Just as not very many know that Shiseido has restaurants in Tokyo that have been awarded numerous Michelin stars. One of these, en emblematic example of East meets West, is The Lighthouse, which makes its pasta exclusively with Italian flour and mineral water. Yes, you’re right, it really is a world that we want to make better known here in Italy too, from concept brand we’ll become a real love brand.

Il colosso nipponico che lei presiede in Italia è sinonimo di avanguardia da molti punti di vista e non solo in ambito scientifico e cosmetico. Uno di questi è il rapporto del marchio con la cultura e l’arte. Ci racconta qualcosa in più a riguardo. È il credo del fondatore Fukuhara San - riteneva che attraverso l’arte si arricchisce se stessi - tant’è che nella sua farmacia di stampo occidentale già all’inizio del ‘900 creò delle vetrine artistiche per i suoi clienti, divenute poi le famose ed apprezzate Art Window di Shiseido fino alla creazione di una vera Art Gallery Shiseido che oggi, in un secolo di storia, è un’icona della radici e della creatività del marchio oltre ad essere la più grande galleria no profit del Giappone che ha ospitato oltre 5.000 artisti e ben 3.000 mostre. In Italia posso annoverare fra tutte, la nostra vicinanza al Teatro alla Scala che prosegue da molti anni e dimostra il legame speciale che abbiamo con l’arte e la cultura, ed altro non è che la rappresentazione del nostro approccio trasversale, di quel modo di vivere che promuoviamo, del circondarsi di bellezza in ogni sua forma. E l’arte è bellezza.

Una domanda che Luxury files pone sempre ai suoi interlocutori. Cosa è per Alberto Noè il lusso?

Direi che è tutto ciò che è prossimo al bello e distintivo.

Ciò che non è facile ottenere e riuscire a dedicargli del tempo. Sapersi regalare qualcosa di unico e farlo per sé stessi.

The Japanese colossus that you head in Italy is synonymous of “state-of-the-art” from many points of view and not only in the scientific and cosmetics sectors. One of these is the brand’s relationship with art and culture.

Tell us something more about this.

It’s the belief of the founder Fukuhara San - he held that one enriches oneself through art. In fact, in his western-style drug store at the beginning of the 1900’s he created artistic window dressings for clients, which later became famous andrecognized as Shiseido Art Windows and later created a real Shiseido Art Gallery. Today, with a century of history, it is an icon of the roots and creativity of the brand as well as being the largest non-profit gallery in Japan, with 3,000 exhibitions and more than 5,000 artists. Amongst other initiatives, I can mention our long-standing close ties with the Teatro alla Scala and demonstrates the special bond that we have with art and culture, which is simply the representation of our transversal approach, that lifestyle that we promote, of surrounding oneself with beauty, in all its forms. And art is beauty.

A question that Luxury files always asks during an interview. What is luxury for Alberto Noè?

I’d say that it’s everything that is close to beautiful anddistinctive. What it’s not easy to obtain and being able to dedicate some time. Knowing how to give oneself something unique and doing it for oneself.

Lavanda, Rosmarino, Olivo, Santolina sono, non a caso, alcuni nomi dei moderni edifici che ospitano le 203 camere. Architetture essenziali che ben si sposano con l’ambiente circostante e non ne interrompono l’armonia.

Colori mediterranei, linee sobrie e materiali locali come il tufo siciliano sono una scelta dell’architetto Flavio Albanese.

Così gli interni, dagli spazi comuni alle suites come pure le camere - tutte con vista mare - sono ampi e impreziositi dall’Interior Design di Olga Polizzi. Nuances di arancio e color ocra, mescolati a toni di lavanda si ritrovano nelle decorazioni e nelle cuscinerie.

Lavender, rosemary, olive, cotton lavender are, not by chance, some of the names of the modern buildings that house the 203 rooms. Thus the indoor spaces, from the public areas to the suites as well as the rooms - all of which are sea-front - are ample and enriched by the artful hand of Olga Polizzi, interior designer. Tones of orange and ochre, mixed with tones of lavender, blend together in the decorations and upholstery.

A medical team visits the guest, following specific analyses to monitor the general health of the guest, and an ad hoc program is developed which calls for physical exercise, a nutrition path and wellness treatments. This is all monitored, even when the guest goes home.’’

And the gourmet factor has not been neglected, the Resort boasts restaurants Amare, Liolà and Zagara, to satisfy those who adore fresh fish, those who prefer traditional Sicilian cooking and those who put themselves in the creative hands of Chef Fulvio Pierangelini, a consultant for many years for Gruppo Rocco Forte. “One of the innovations we have in mind,” says Artolli, “is a food path, a real tourist experience, in which guests can personally pick vegetables and fruit from our gardens, to then prepare ad hoc dishes.” The Granita Bar instead serves aperitifs at sunset, to the notes of a classical guitar, played live. DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA

SONO 40 ANNI CHE IL “DUCA” EDWARD KENNEDY ELLINGTON È VENUTO A MANCARE MA LA SUA MEMORIA È COLTIVATA IN OGNI PARTE DEL MONDO ATTRAVERSO UN REPERTORIO CHE SEGNA OLTRE 2000 BRANI, DA LUI STESSO COMPOSTI ED ARRANGIATI.

Il suo patrimonio culturale, dapprima portato avanti dal figlio Mercer, poi dal nipote Paul ed ora dal maestro Tommy James in giro per il mondo, è interpretato a puntino dalla Big Band che ancora conserva il suo nome e che, nel rispetto del suo lavoro e sotto la supervisione della famiglia Ellington, porta ovunque l’autentico sound della Swing Era. Abbiamo avuto l’onore di conoscere questi strepitosi musicisti, appartenenti ad ogni ramo generazionale ma tutti legati dalla passione per il jazz più autentico, in occasione del loro primo tour italiano, che ci auguriamo essere l’antesignano di future altre numerose rentrée.

THE DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA It’s 40 years since “Duke” Edward Kennedy Ellington passed away but his memory is cultivated all over the world through a repertoire that numbers more than 2,000 pieces, which he himself composed and arranged.

His cultural heritage, initially carried on by his son Mercer, then by his grandsonPaul and now by Maestro Tommy James on tours around the world, is interpreted to the best by the Big Band which stillbears his name and which, in respect for his work and under the supervision of the Ellington family, carries the authentic sound of the Swing Era to the four corners of the world. We had the honor of meeting these exceptional musicians, of different generations but all linked by their passion for authentic jazz, during their first Italian tour, which we hope will be the first of many more.

La storica Orchestra nata negli anni Venti e diretta dal suo fondatore fino alla morte, è ora nelle sapenti mani di un simpatico e versatile direttore-pianista, in organico già dal 1987 (su diretto invito di Mercer) che, con la DEO, ha registrato dischi come Only God CanMake A Tree (1996) e Third Generation (2009). Quando gli abbiamo chiesto quale sarebbe stata la scaletta in programma nel primo dei tre appuntamenti nazionali, all’Auditorium Parco della Musica di Roma in occasione dell’International Jazz Day, ci ha risposto che a seconda del suo feeling istintivo, avrebbe considerato quali brani dirigere. Solo quando lo abbiamo visto in azione abbiamo capito a cosa si riferiva vedendo crescere, nella presentazione che anticipava la storia di ogni track, il valore di questo continuo dialogo interattivo tra Maestro e musicisti, un gioco di sguardi, riflessi ed emozioni tutto giocato sull’improvvisazione - e qui sta la differenza dei grandi swinger americani - e tutto improntato su un divertimento virtuosamente ineccepibile più che su una sfida adrenalinica sulla migliore fuoriuscita del suono.

The well-known Orchestra, founded in the 1920’s and conducted by its founder until his death, is now in the capable hands of a genial and versatile director-pianist, with the Orchestra since 1987 (upon Mercer’s invitation) who, with the DEO, recorded music such as Only God Can Make A Tree (1996) and Third Generation (2009). When we asked him what was on the program for the first of the three dates, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome for the occasion of theInternational Jazz Day, he responded that depending on his instincts and feelings, he would decide which pieces to conduct. Only when we saw him in action did we understand what he meant, seeing the anticipation grow during the presentation for each piece, and the value of this steady interactive dialogue between the Maestro and the musicians, made up of glances, reflections and emotions all played out on improvisations - and this is the difference in the great American swingers - all based on outstanding entertainment virtuosity more than on an adrenaline challenge of the best sound.

Uno spettacolo musicale - come pochi se ne vedono purtroppo al giorno d’oggi nella nostra Penisola - che ha ripercorso per due ore di seguito il miglior repertorio ellingtoniano, dagli storici hit It Don’t Mean a Thing (if it Ain’t Got That Swing) e Take the A train fino alle più morbide melodie di Mood Indigo e Satin Doll.

Se l’ultimo membro della band originaria fondata alla fine degli anni Venti, BarrieLee Haal, è morto nel 2011, la formazione continua dunque a vivere la tradizione di un compositore-direttore-cantante che nel corso dei suoi oltre 50 anni di carriera si esibì in ben 20000 performance tra Europa, America latina, Medio Oriente ed Asia, ricevendo 13 Grammy Awards, un Premio Pulitzer, la Medaglia d’oro presidenziale dal presidente degli Stati Uniti Lyndon Johnson (1966), la Legione d’Onore francese (1973), oltre ai dottorati honoris causa dalle prestigiose Università di Howard e Yale ed un francobollo commemorativo sul quale fu impressa la sua immagine.

A musical event, such as today we see far too many in our country, that for two whole hours took us through the best Ellington repertoire, from the iconic hit It Don’t Mean a Thing (if it Ain’t Got That Swing) and Take the A Train to the softer melodies of Mood Indigo and Satin Doll. Although the last member of the original band founded at the end of the 1920’s, BarrieLee Haal, died in 2011, the band still continues the tradition of a composer-conductor-singer who in the course of his more than 50 years career performed on stage in 20,000 performances in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, receiving 13 Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer, the Presidential Gold Medal from President Lyndon Johnson (USA) in 1966, the French Legion of Honor in 1973, as well as degrees honoris causa from the prestigious Howard University and Yale University and a commemorative stamp with his picture.

Quando poi pensiamo che il “Duca” (così soprannominato per le raffinate maniere) era inizialmente restio al piano ma cominciò a suonare per impressionare una ragazza, possiamo capire quanto cuore e passione ci sia nella sua “American Music” - da molti definita cool ma in realtà non catalogabile in etichette e categorie predefinite: semplicemente inarrestabile nel corso dei decenni. L’attenta interpretazione di cinque sassofoni (Mark Gross, Bobby LaVell, Shelley Paul, Charlie Young, Morgan Price), quattro trombe (Kevin Bryan, Chris Albert, Shareef Clayton, Shawn Edmonds), tre tromboni (Stafford Hunter, Andrae Hayward, Alvin Walker), una batteria (David Gibson) ed uno smagliante pianista-conductor (Tommy James) rendono ancora possibile, a distanza di oltre 90 anni dalla sua nascita, questo autentico ed infinito sogno.

When we think that the “Duke” (so named for his elegant mannerisms) was initially reluctant to play the piano but he started to play to make an impression on a young lady, we can understand how much heart and soul there is in his “American Music” - which many define as “cool”- but in effect it cannot be catalogued in predefined labels and categories: simply unstoppable during the course of the decades. The careful interpretation of five saxophones (Mark Gross, BobbyLaVell, Shelley Paul, Charlie Young, Morgan Price), four trumpets (Kevin Bryan, Chris Albert, Shareef Clayton, Shawn Edmonds), three trombones (Stafford Hunter, AndraeHayward, Alvin Walker), drums (David Gibson) and a brilliant pianist-conductor (Tommy James), more than 90 years from its foundation, continue to regale us with this authentic and infinite dream.
