Track Attack G GAC takes us on a Spirited Test Drive

AC – which is Bahrain’s newest Chinese car brand that was launched earlier this year, invited media members and guests to the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) to test drive their range of automobiles on the outer circuit. The circuit run featured a slalom course as well as various sharp corners designed to show off the handling and stability of the car. There was also a braking zone that allowed drivers to test the braking

capabilities down the pit straight after accelerating up to 100kph. The drives were first conducted by the friendly trained instructors at the BIC, followed by the participants. Following the session, the guests were treated to lunch at the Paddock Club. Surprisingly, we found that GACs were very well put together and handled the punishing heat as well as repeated hard acceleration and stops with the air conditioning on full with absolute aplomb.

The Bespoke Coachline O

The pinstripe that epitomizes Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ dedication to craftsmanship

ver eleven decades have passed since that famous lunch in May 1904 when Henry Royce, a successful engineer, struck a deal with Charles Rolls, owner of one of the first car dealerships to create RollsRoyce Limited. Since then, the stories about the intricacies of the manufacturing process of a Rolls-Royce motor car have become legendary in their own right, representing a beacon of dedication to the art of craftsmanship. Amidst the plethora of stories around the famed luxury motor car, that of Mark Court is one of the most widely discussed, as Court is currently the only person in the world qualified and skilled enough to paint the famous pinstripe or ‘coachline’ on Bespoke Rolls-Royce motor cars. Symbolizing the quality and uncompromising craftsmanship that is synonymous with the meticulous creation of a Rolls-Royce motor car, the coachline is applied entirely by hand, unaided by any machinery, running over both flanks of the full six meters of a Rolls-Royce vehicle. It can either be single or double line, in a single colour or two-tone and can feature anything from logos, to family crests or even Arabic calligraphy, based entirely on what the customer requests through the famed Rolls-Royce Bespoke program. Some of the beautiful and elaborate designs that have featured on the coachline of a number of exclusive Rolls-Royce Bespoke models in the past few years include the intricate Arabic calligraphy elegantly expressed on the coachline of the One Thousand and One Nights Ghost Collection and the exquisite Peacock emblem decorating the Emerald green coachline of the Rolls-Royce Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupé. At the request of VIP customers, and as a testament to the dedication of Rolls-Royce to its valued clientele regardless of geographical location, Mark Court has on occasion visited customers at their homes to paint a coachline on a vehicle that has already left the factory. The story of Mark’s travel to the desert metropolis of Dubai in 2012, to paint a coachline on the vehicle of a very special client, has become legendary in the automotive industry.

Rolls Royce Black Badge R olls-Royce Motor Cars has announced a new facet of the ultra-luxury marque’s personality, a dark and edgy lifestyle statement: ‘Black Badge’. A permanent new subbrand, Black Badge was unveiled earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and transforms the character of both Ghost and Wraith. The new sub-brand is expected to appeal to those people who are elusive and defiant, the risk takers and disruptors who break the rules and laugh in the face of convention. It is in this spirit that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced that Black Badge ‘Inspired by dark edgy lifestyle’, is now available to order from Euro Motors, the sole authorised dealers of RollsRoyce Motor Cars in the

Kingdom. New material accents and tonalities are combined to accommodate the tastes of those fast-moving customers who adopt a strident approach to life’s finer challenges. With this manifesto as their departure point, Rolls-Royce designers, engineers and craftspeople set to work transforming Ghost and

Wraith in subtly different ways. Their intent was to deliver darker, more assertive and more focused Black Badge alter egos that differ from each other as much as they do from their siblings. The result is Ghost Black Badge and Wraith Black Badge. Black Badge is known as the ultimate in pure luxury style and engineering substance.

Nissan, which will soon own a 34-percent stake in Mitsubishi, is throwing another bone to its struggling fellow Japanese automaker. The companies are in final stages of talks to send former Nissan executive Mitsuhiko Yamashita over to Mitsubishi, reports Reuters. Citing two sources familiar with the matter, Reuters said the appointment of Yamashita as Mitsubishi’s tech chief could be finalized as early as Wednesday. Yamashita served as Nissan’s executive vice president in charge of product and technology R&D from 2005 to 2014. Neither Nissan nor Mitsubishi have confirmed the new appointment, although it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if it happened. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said earlier that a Nissan exec would likely help lead Mitsubishi.

Mulsanne First Edition Boasts 350-Year-Old Walnut Trim N ow and again, almost every automaker creates a zooted-up version of a car to celebrate the start of a model run. Just recently, Alfa Romeo did a launch special for the 4C, Mazda threw on glad rags for the latest MX-5 Miata, and Audi has one now for the 2017 A4. But none of these cars have wood trim from a 350-year-old walnut tree that once perched on an English estate. When a storm knocked down England’s thirdoldest tree in 2007, there was so much walnut (a reported 43 tons’ worth) that it later went up for sale, at which point the Bentley veneer staff raised their paddles at auction and paid an “undisclosed

record price” to dress some extra-special cars. Fifteen Bentleys have already used the tree’s illustrious grain, including the Mulsanne 95

special edition sold in the U.K. two years ago. Now, whoever orders a Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase First Edition will get this same trim.

2017 Subaru BRZ Updated

A

fter rolling out several minor updates for its BRZ sports coupe over the past few years, Subaru is making changes for the 2017 model that might be substantive enough to convince current owners to upgrade—or pull buyers who are on the fence into the fold. As previewed by the updates made to its Toyota 86 twin (previously

known as the Scion FR-S), the 2017 BRZ gets more power, revised suspension tuning, a few visual changes, and a newly available Performance package. The BRZ’s 2.0-liter flat-four has less internal friction and increased airflow, resulting in a small uptick in output of 5 horsepower and 5 lb-ft of torque, for new totals of 205 and 156. Aided by slightly

shorter gearing, acceleration is claimed to be improved— at least with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. Neither the higher output nor the different gearing applies to cars with the optional six-speed automatic transmission, but buyers who choose the automatic on this coupe probably won’t mind anyway.

After showing an updated version of the GT-R earlier this year, Nissan is now applying similar changes to the hard-core GT-R NISMO. There’s good news and bad news: The bad news is that there’s no more power than before, with the 3.8-liter twinturbo V-6 making the same 600 horsepower. The good news is that the NISMO’s interior receives the same upgrades as the standard GT-R, a modernization that was long overdue for the aging R35 generation of Nissan’s performance flagship. VW Invests $300 Million in Ridesharing Service

Bugatti designed the Chiron to be superior to its predecessor, the Veyron, in every respect. The first customer cars will be delivered in the fall of 2016, and Dürheimer says they will be able to reach 239 [mph] in Handling mode—”with maximum downforce and easy handling. It reacts like a go-kart.” To go faster, customers will be able to switch to Top Speed mode, which is limited to 261 mph and can be activated any time. But that’s not the upper limit. The governor can be disabled altogether, but the Chiron has not yet been driven near its ungoverned top speed. Bugatti’s official v-max run might not happen until 2018, but if customers want to go beyond the 261-mph limit before that, Bugatti will help them to do so. At those ultra-high speeds, every detail needs to be sorted, such as the condition of the wheels and tires. Additional speculation concerns a roadster version of the Chiron. Bugatti previously had a roadster variant of the Veyron, and when asked whether a roadster version of the Chiron would need to have a T-bar roof in order to preserve the “Atlantic” line at the center of the coupe, Dürheimer remarked: “Very perceptive.”

That’s because it is European—say that in a fancy voice— where it competes with Uber for “share of mind.” According to Volkswagen, Gett operates in 60 cities worldwide, including New York, and it is growing.

The Buick Verano will stay in production for an abbreviated 2017 model year before being phased out this fall. General Motors, in a statement Thursday, said Verano output at its Lake Orion plant in suburban Detroit would wind down in October. Automotive News reported this month that GM had decided to end the compact sedan’s run in the United States, even though the nameplate will live on in China. The move spotlights how automakers are rethinking product portfolios amid what many executives and analysts believe is a permanent shift toward crossovers and SUVs.

Volvo to launch Compact New Crossover V

olvo’s first entry into the premium compact crossover segment, the XC40 arriving late next year, is meant by the Swedish brand to capitalize on the market’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for such vehicles. It will be a key element in Volvo’s push to increase its volume in the U.S. if it can gain ground on established offerings from luxury rivals such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Land Rover. The XC40 will be one of three entry-luxury Volvo compacts here, joined by a sedan and wagon. The vehicles will be smaller and less expensive than the compact Volvo S60 sedan, in the same way that the compact Mercedes CLA sedan is priced below the compact C class. The Volvo 40 series will compete with other entry vehicles such as the Mercedes GLA and BMW X1 on the crossover side and the CLA and Audi A3 on the car side.

rumors about a possible turbocharged, sporty Soul model for years, but this is the first hard evidence— and apparent on-sale timing—that we’ve seen. We really like the Kia Soul in its current form, as it offers standout styling, a roomy interior, and useful in-car

He had earlier won the title in the series’ very first season in 2007/2008. Meanwhile, Stephen Kellogg announced his retirement from the BIC 2,000cc Challenge. The 2011/2012 champion has been one of the most consistent and successful competitors in the series, which he has been involved in since its inaugural campaign. National Racing Day was organised by BIC in cooperation with the

32 www.arabiamotors.co I JUNE 2016

Bahrain Motor Federation. Faqihi was among the stars of the meeting, taking charge in qualifying before cruising to his two race victories in the 2,000cc season finale. Driving a Honda CIVIC, Faqihi secured pole position with a best lap of one minute 19.050 seconds, which was a new personal best time around BIC’s 2.55-kilometre inner track. Faqihi went on to win the opening 12-lap sprint in 17 minutes 19.234 seconds. He did well to fend off the challenge of newly crowned champion Shaikh Salman, who battled hard in his own CIVIC but had to settle for the runner-up spot 0.833 seconds behind. Tim Birkin in a Honda Integra claimed third place a distant 24.895s from Faqihi. Kellogg (CIVIC, +1:04.265), Lee Stones (Renault Clio, 11 laps) and Mohammed Janahi (Mini Cooper, 10 laps) rounded out the final

classification. Four drivers did not finish. In race two, Faqihi capped his near-perfect day with a win in 16:09.391. Alex Longden in a BMW 3 Series/F20C was in second place 5.234s off of the winning pace, while Tim Birkin came third 7.066s back. Shaikh Salman had to settle for fourth but that would do little against him claiming the season’s overall crown. He had clocked the second race’s best lap of 1:18.885, which was also the overall best of the day. Classified fifth through ninth place, respectively, were Kellogg (+24.379s), Raed Himmo (CIVIC, +34.535s), Michael Priester (Honda CRX, +44.263s), Stones (+1:03.629) and Janahi (10 laps). To end the 2015/2016 BIC 2,000cc Challenge, Shaikh Salman topped the championship standings ahead of Longden and Karimi.

RABIE TAKES HOME BMR 600 TITLE He was a massive 26.513s ahead of runner-up Martijn Heemskirk, and 42.573s ahead of David Wynne, who finished third. All three finished race two in the same positions. Rabie won in 14:42.450, a comfortable 24.666s ahead of Heemskirk and 28.459s in front of third-placer Wynne. The result earned Rabie eight victories from as many races to end his campaign in the 2015/2016 season, which was the second in the BMR 600. At the end of all of the evening’s racing, the winners were awarded their respective trophies in a podium ceremony.

Chris Rabie claimed another fine double in the third and final round of the Bahrain Motorcycle Racing (BMR) 600 last month at the National Racing Day organized by the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in cooperation with the Bahrain Motor Federation. Rabie maintained his winning form in the BMR 600, which featured a field of riders on identical 600cc Honda Hornet bikes. He kept his record after the season’s third and final round at an unblemished six wins from as many races. After taking pole with a dominant 1:18.450, Rabie won the 11-lap first race in 14:36.202.

SH.ISA, BESHARA & ALMUAMMARI ENJOY DOUBLE VICTORIES

Three of the top stars in national karting were victorious last month in the final round of the 2015/2016 Bahrain Karting Sprint Championship (BKSC), held at Bahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC) in Sakhir. Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Talal Beshara and Rashid Almuammari each claimed an impressive double in their

34 www.arabiamotors.co I JUNE 2016

respective race categories under the BKSC. Shaikh Isa triumphed in two races in the Max category of the Bahrain Rotax Mojo Max Challenge (BRMMC) while Talal won both sprints in the BRMMC’s Junior Max class. Almuammari, on the other hand, clinched both races in the Bahrain SWS Sprint Championship (SWS). Shaikh Isa and Beshara both enjoyed perfect rounds in the BRMMC.

Shaikh Isa powered to a fine race one victory after completing the 11-lap sprint in 10 minutes 38.576 seconds. Shaikh Isa finished 2.975s ahead of runner-up His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and was also 8.947s in front of Hussain Hasan, who completed the podium placers. Beshara clinched first place amongst the Junior Max competitors with a win in 10:59.250. Alexander Bekkers was in second place. In BRMMC race two, Shaikh Isa managed to secure his fine double after a tightly contested event that saw only 0.116s separate him and His Highness Shaikh Mohammed. The pair were in impressive form, as Hasan completed the same podium but was a distant 10.472s behind. Beshara won the Juniors Max race in 10:58.629. Bekkers was second and Zaid Audih was classified third. Meanwhile, Almuammari enjoyed a pair of hotly contested SWS races, each of which featured a packed field of 17 competitors. Tarryn Pods had the brilliant start to the SWS action after grabbing pole position with a best lap of 1:13.375 during qualifying. The 2015/2016 BKSC season was comprised of six rounds of the BRMMC and eight in the SWS. Each event took place at the world-class BIKC facilities in Sakhir.

Q&A

ASK THE OIL GUYS

Want to know what the best oil is for your pride and joy? Ask the experts at BAPCO.

APCO are pioneers when it comes to stuff that powers our cars. Recently they’ve launched their very own line of engine oils and lubricants that have met global standards from leading automotive manufacturers. As part of this, we have BAPCO on board to answer any questions that you may have regarding your next oil change. Is it OK to add mineral oil to synthetic oil in the engine of my car or vice versa? Is there any danger? To get the full benefits of using your synthetic engine oils it is not recommended to mix (Top up) with mineral oil. There is no scientific study that suggests mixing synthetic and mineral engine oils could damage your engine. Which functions do engine oils fulfill? Engine oil performs many functions. It minimizes the grinding of all contact metal surfaces in the engine, and it transfers heat away from the combustion cycle. Engine oil also holds in suspension by-product of combustion like soot to prevent deposition in lubricated engine parts. Protect against rust and corrosion. It does all of these things under tremendous heat and pressure. Why does engine oil need to be renewed at certain intervals? Engine oils are subjected to extreme temperature and pressure in a repetitive manner during the combustion process. Some of the components added to the base oil start to breakdown at some point thus unable to provide protection of the lubricated engine parts. This is the right time to change your engine oil to maintain the same level of protection like the new oil. Can oil drain intervals be extended? Oil Drain Interval (ODI) can be extended provided there is a great certainty that the engine oil in use is still suitable to extended use. This can be done by condition monitoring technique. 2 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2015

What is the right (engine) oil for my car? The best source of information that describes which oil is best for your car is your Vehicle Maintenance Manual. This is a small book normally placed in the car’s glove compartment. To what extent do motorcycle oils differ from car engine oils? Motorcycle lubrication is entirely different automotive lubrication. Motorcycle oil provides lubrication to the engine, gears and clutch. Car engine oil lubricates the engine only while gears and transmission are lubricated with gear oils and automatic transmission fluids. Can I use diesel engine oil in a petrol engine, and vice versa? If an oil can or bottle displays API CH-4/SJ, this is primarily formulated for use in diesel engines but may be used also for gasoline engines. Similarly if an oil can or bottle displays API SF/ CF this oil is primarily formulated for gasoline engines but may be used in diesel engines. Always consult your vehicle maintenance Manual if in doubt.

Why choose a synthetic oil? Synthetic engine oils exhibit greater resistance to oxidation, stable viscometric properties and less volatile. As a result synthetic engine oils can be used for an longer period while providing excellent engine protection. What are the advantages of a multigrade oil? It has already been established by the American Petroleum Institute that there is fuel savings from 1.5 up to 2.0 percent in using multigrade oils. This apart from the cold start up benefits these oils were initially formulated for.

NEW CAR REVIEW ACURA NSX ell, we had to talk about this here NSX at some point in time. Honda fans and fans of the NSX in general were all excited about the return of the NSX ever since the teaser came out way back when. However, when the final production version showed up, it didn’t exactly razzle and dazzle supercar fans with its specs, performance – or the looks for that matter. On paper atleast this new NSX was a far cry from the world-beater that Aryton Senna had signed off on back in the 90s. For starters, the NSX is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system—integrated with an ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with world’s-first material applications and manufacturing processes. Developed under the concept of a “human-centered supercar,” a car that puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, the next-generation NSX will leverage its state-of-the-art hybrid supercar power unit, body and

chassis to deliver exceptionally intuitive and immediate response to driver inputs. Acura says that their engineers leveraged the company’s expertise both with high-performance engine and hybrid electric-drive technologies, as well as its two decades of experience with industry-leading dynamic torque-vectoring technologies, including Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), to create the most sophisticated, technologically advanced and intelligent powertrain in the supercar universe. The V6 engine employs a race-inspired compact valve train and dry sump lubrication system to help lower the center of gravity. The all-new 9-speed DCT delivers synapse-quick gear changes and rev-matching downshifts. The rear direct-drive electric motor, housed between the engine and transmission, supports acceleration, braking and transmission shifting performance. The NSX’s front wheels are driven by twin independent high-output electric motors, which deliver instantaneous torque response and dynamic left-to-right torque distribution. The NSX uses its front electric motors for dynamic torque vectoring in addition to enhancing acceleration and braking performance. The result is an instantaneous “zero delay” launch performance and handling response that seems to anticipate the driver’s desire. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at some of the world’s most challenging race circuits, including the famed Nurburgring – but track numbers haven’t been made public yet. The NSX will be manufactured exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, where approximately 100 highly-skilled associates will conduct full body construction, paint, and final assembly using domestic and globallysourced parts.

NEW CAR REVIEW MCLAREN 570GT

GT SPIRIT MCLAREN GETS THE FORMULA RIGHT WITH THE 570GT

cLarens always held the candle for the most comfortable and usable supercar on the road – starting with the F1 and keeping that mantra alive through the MP4-12C and the 650S and 570. To take that a step further, McLaren have now launched the 570GT, which in our books has to be one of the best supercars that money can buy. As with all Sports Series models, ingress and egress are optimised through a lower and narrower sill, while the signature dihedral doors open with a more upward arc. The standard fixed glass Panoramic Roof provides a bright, open cabin with a dramatic glasshouse design running through to the large rear glass hatch. The roof glass is treated with 18 percent transmission tint - the same as the glass roof of the McLaren P1™ - and also features SSF (Sound & Solar Film) to absorb solar radiation while providing additional noise insulation. With the increased glass area of the McLaren

40 www.arabiamotors.co I JUNE 2016

570GT, cabin temperatures are regulated and maintained by an enhanced dual-zone air conditioning system. The front luggage area remains unchanged from the Coupé, providing 150 litres of stowage, while a further 220 litres of space is available behind the seats on the leather-lined Touring Deck. This additional space is accessed via the side opening Glass Hatch bringing the total storage space for the McLaren 570GT to 370 litres. The Glass Hatch opens on the kerbside whether left- or right-hand drive and is framed by carbon fibre providing significant torsional rigidity. Sharing the newly developed suspension system with the other models in the Sports Series, the 570GT emphasises long distance comfort through further

fine tuning to the system which includes a reduction in spring rate stiffness of 15 percent at the front and 10 percent at the rear. Independent adaptive dampers can be dynamically adjusted through Normal, Sport and Track settings, and are coupled to front and rear anti-roll bars. The overall set up of the McLaren 570GT has been calibrated to enhance road and motorway driving, and aid ride quality over poor road surfaces. The electro-hydraulic steering system is retained from the Coupé models but with a reduced ratio - by two percent - and has been specifically designed to smooth out driver inputs at high cruising speed. The McLaren 570GT is fitted with the McLaren-developed 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 M838TE engine, which debuted in the 570S Coupe. Power and torque remain at 562bhp and 443lb ft and power is delivered to the rear wheels via a seven-speed seamless-shift transmission with adjustment through Normal, Sport and Track settings.

NEW CAR REVIEW MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS

ELEGANCE REDEFINED THIS IS THE NEW KING OF EXECUTIVE SEDANS

et’s face it – the fact that the new E looks like the S both on the outside and the inside is win enough for most people. Mercedes is calling the new E “the most intelligent saloon in the business class”, packed with technology that’s sure to filter down the range in future. Amongst the cutting-edge features, the E-Class is the first Mercedes with the capability to be upgraded wirelessly through a software download and comes with the brand’s latest autonomous driving tech. The fifth-generation saloon is 43mm longer than the outgoing model overall, with an extra 65mm added to the wheelbase for increased passenger space. The most desirable option will be the virtual instrument display, which replaces the conventional dials in favor of a fully customizable set-up. This will give owners a widescreen cockpit that Mercedes says “appears to hover in thin air”, but is only available as an option. The infotainment system is more advanced than in

42 www.arabiamotors.co I JUNE 2015 2016

the S-Class, and there are touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel to control it. Customers will be able to add the optional Drive Pilot system to their car, which takes cruise control to the next level. AMG Line cars get sportier bumpers and side skirts, bigger alloy wheels, an AMGbranded steering wheel and sports seats. Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual modes allow owners to set the car up to suit their driving preferences, although the brand says it offers soft base suspension, but still with

good stability and decent handling. Optionally, the E-Class will come with ‘Comfortable Avantgarde’ suspension, lowered by 15mm for a sportier character. Adaptive ‘multi-chamber’ air-suspension will also be an option, which Mercedes claims is a class first. The Air Body Control system also has a self-levelling function, which automatically controls the ride height depending on speed. It hunkers down on motorways to reduce drag, and can raise the chassis on rough roads at the push of a button.

Meet a Record-Setting New Chapter in Jaguar’s History – The F-Pace very manufacturer has a turning point in their history – an event that changes the course of their operations or a new model that rejuvenates the brand from the ground up. If you ask us, Jaguar has always made some pretty soulful cars – but then again we’re enthusiasts and the opinion of enthusiasts alone does not a financially successful car company make. After a recent revival by Tata, Jaguar is building cars that it should’ve always built – the F-Type is a great example. However, sedans and sports cars alone simply don’t provide the kind of cash flow necessary to push a car company forward – SUVs and crossovers are all the rage; more so luxury SUVs and crossovers. Jaguar teased us back in 2013 when it unveiled the C-X17 concept car – the original framework for the F-Pace crossover.

SO WHAT’S THIS CAT LIKE?

It’s light for one – 80 percent of the F-Pace’ body structure is made out of aluminum; the tailgate is composite, the front-end structure out of magnesium, and steel for the doors. Jaguar says that the “bodyin-white” (bare metal frame) weighs just 298kg – which is about the same as a Fiat 500L. It is worth noting that the F-Pace sports the only aluminumintensive monocoque in the segment. The F-Pace is based on the same architecture and platform as the XE and XF sedans.

POWERTRAIN

There are a couple of diesel engine options available, but for us, the focus is on the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 petrol engine that’s lifted directly from the F-Type. Combined with the 8-speed automatic transmission, the F-Pace will put out a healthy 376hp to the tires via a state of the art all wheel drive system. Jaguar claims that the F-Pace will be able to crack the 0-100kph dash in just a hair over 5 seconds.

JAGUAR F-PACE

NEW CAR REVIEW

JUNE 2015 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 45

CHASSIS TECH

The F-Pace comes with a plethora of new chassis tech – chief among which are torque vectoring, an optional electric adaptive damping system and tunable driving modes that adjust functions such as throttle mapping, transmission shift points and steering feel. The F-Pace’s all-wheel drive system is derived from the one recently launched in the F-Type. Called Intelligent Drive Dynamics, the rear-biased system is designed to boost on-road dynamics and traction. Off-road ability comes from Jaguar’s newly developed Adaptive Surface Response system. This is derived from Land Rover’s Terrain Response system and is designed to allow the F-Pace to perform on mud, gravel, snow and other low-grip surfaces. Other tech includes All Surface Progress Control and Low-Friction Launch systems.

GADGETS

As standard, an 8-inch touchscreen and Jaguar’s “InControl” infotainment system are offered. An upgraded “InControl Pro” system with a 10.2in touchscreen is optional. Other functions include a WiFi hotspot that allows up to eight devices to be connected to the system. In place of the usual instrument binnacle is a 12.3in HD screen that displays speed and trip computer functions, as well as 3D navigation graphics. A laser head-up display projects such things as navigation instructions and speed limits onto the windscreen. The F-Pace also features the largest opening panoramic glass sunroof of any car. Perhaps the coolest feature of the F-Pace is something known as an “Activity Key”; this is a watch-like wristband that you wear and is waterproof. Jaguar says that this is aimed at those who love water sports. The Activity Key has a screen that allows you to lock and unlock the car whilst leaving the actual key inside when you go to the beach for example – clever and very thoughtful. There is no better way to launch a gamechanging new model than to have it set a record; the F-Pace just set a Guinness world record for driving around a loop – you know, like a Hot Wheels car. If that doesn’t impress buyers into the showrooms, pretty much nothing will.

“PERHAPS THE COOLEST FEATURE OF THE F-PACE IS SOMETHING KNOWN AS AN “ACTIVITY KEY”; THIS IS A WATCH-LIKE WRISTBAND THAT YOU WEAR AND IS WATERPROOF.” 46 www.arabiamotors.co I JUNE 2015 2016

FORD FOCUS CONSUMER REVIEW

JUNE 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 61

EXTERIOR The Focus now shares its glare with the bigger Fusion, inheriting that Aston Martin-esque front fascia with pointy DB9-like headlamps and a wide angular grille. At the rear however, the Focus is all blend-in-to-the-rush-hour-traffic style with straightforward old-fashioned tail lamps. My test car also came equipped with sporty alloy wheels, which is a nice touch. It isn’t a bad car to look at by any stretch, but you wouldn’t be ogling every time you approach it either.

INTERIOR On the inside, the Focus has that Europeanthemed style to it; a swoopy dashboard and tiny screen readouts thrown in with a myriad of buttons on the dash – makes it all seem very busy and high-tech, which is actually appealing on a small car. What’s cool is that the overall design of the interior with the funky instrument cluster and center stack actually feels pretty upscale and premium – more like the previous-gen ST than a base model sedan. And you will know that it’s a base model – right off the bat, since there isn’t an armrest (please order every car with an armrest guys come on!), nor there isn’t any leather anywhere – not even on the steering wheel. But the Focus does come with a great infotainment system that includes Bluetooth telephone connectivity and controls on the steering wheel. I loved the seats might I add – they are supportive and comfy, so spending time stuck in city traffic is going to be a bit more bearable when you’re in the Focus.

“AS I WAS PULLING OUT FROM THE SHOWROOM AND MASHED THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR TO MERGE ON TO THE HIGHWAY, I REALIZED PRETTY SHARPISH THAT THIS WAS NO ORDINARY FOCUS AS THE SPEEDOMETER RUSHED TOWARDS 140KPH AND SHOWED NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN!”

THE DRIVE Remember how I was on about how this was going to be an average day? Yea – No, absolutely not. As I was pulling out from the showroom and mashed the gas pedal to the floor to merge on to the highway, I realized pretty sharpish that this was no ordinary Focus as the speedometer rushed towards 140kph and showed no signs of slowing down! Was this some kind of pre-production Focus ST? The performance of this car could put some V8’s to shame! The steering feels spot on and the suspension comfy yet the car feels incredibly stable at high speeds. Speaking of high speeds, this Focus can get to 220kph with remarkable ease, and I was pleasantly surprised that Ford didn’t find it necessary to install a limiter on this car. Pulling over at a gas station – more to look under the hood than for gas since the car is extremely frugal, I discover the cause of all the performance – this new Focus comes with Ford’s Ecoboost four-pot engine. Ecoboost is the moniker that Ford uses to describe its latest range of turbocharged engines, and boy does adding a tiny turbo to an otherwise staid dour cylinder change its nature! The 1.5 liter turbo four mated to a six speed auto in this variant puts out a decent 150hp and pretty much explains why this little sedan is so quick on its roll. Besides this, torque vectoring and standard traction and stability control as well as ABS brakes help with stability when you need it the most.

WHAT TO MAKE OF IT? Well, I would get a bone standard one with a six speed manual, tune it, throw some stickier tires on it and turn this into one helluva track day toy! What’s crazy is that I can drive to work in it everyday with the AC cranked and not need to stop for gas all the time. Pretty cool. JUNE 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 63

es, we’ve all seen countless videos, photos and reviews of Porsche’s greatest hypercar ever since its debut in 2014. But trust us when we tell you that seeing this car in the metal is quite an otherworldly automotive experience. That’s because photos and videos simply do not do justice to the sheer beauty and presence of the 918 Spyder.

“THE 918 MANAGED 2.2 SECONDS TO 100KPH, TO 160 IN 4.9 SECONDS, TO 290KPH I THE TECHY STUFF

For those of you not very familiar with the workings of the 918, this is Porsche’s first plug-in Hybrid hypercar. The chassis is constructed from a carbon fiber reinforced plastic monocoque. Powered by a mid-mounted 4.6 liter V8 naturally aspirated engine that puts out a stomping 608hp, which you’d think would be more than adequate in itself, this is then joined in the propulsion business by twin electric motors that deliver an additional 279 horses. This makes for a combined power output of 887hp (and a total torque output of 940 foot-pounds). Since the electric motors are split into two – one driving the front axle producing an output of 125hp that will decouple electrically when not necessary and another that is connected to the rear wheels in parallel with the engine, (producing 154hp) and also serving as the main generator, you can say that the 918 is technically all-wheel-drive. Power transmission duties are handled by Porsche’s very-own 7-speed PDK gearbox. The lithiumion battery pack that the 918 is equipped with provides an electriconly range of 19km – good for that quick jaunt down to the store. Porsche quotes a top speed of 340kph, which we’re pretty sure isn’t just achievable, but is also a conservative number. Porsche also estimate that 0-100kph takes 2.5 seconds, 0-200kph arrives in 7.2 seconds and it will eclipse the 300kph mark in 19.9 seconds. Independent testing, however, found those numbers to be a bit off – the 918 managed 2.2 seconds to 100kph, to 160 in 4.9

66 www.arabiamotors.co I JUNE 2016

seconds, to 290kph in 17.5 seconds and through the quarter mile in a whopping 9.8 seconds. Independent tests also found that the 918 can come to a dead stop from 100kph in just 94 feet or 29 meters. It is also interesting to note that the engine is built on the RS Spyder LeMans prototype and features no engine belts. The 918 offers five driving modes – E-Drive that allows you to drive on electric power alone, two hybrid modes called Hybrid and Race that combine both the engine and electric motors for propulsion. In Race mode, a “Push to pass” feature engages the “Hot Lap” mode, which delivers a burst of additional electric power. Think of it akin to the “Overboost” button on the current turbocharged 911s.

WEISSACH PACKAGE

Named after Porsche’s R&D and Motorsport center in Weissach, Germany, in addition to the standard 918, Porsche also offers the hypercar in a “Weissach Package” for those who want a more “performance oriented finish”. If you tick the Weissach Package box, the exterior comes with the roof, rear wing and windscreen frame left in an unpainted bare carbon finish, plus the option of sticker packs applied to the exterior finish that take inspiration from classic 917 race cars. Performance wise, while the basic hybrid architecture remains the same, the 918 Weissach Package is put on a diet, which sees

it, shave 41 kilos from its (1704kg) kerb weight. This is achieved by adding magnesium wheels and reduced sound deadening in the cabin. Both the driver and passenger seats get six-point belts, and more motorsport inspiration comes via the front wheel arch aeroflaps, that increase downforce, and drag reducing rear winglets. The Weissach 918 is three seconds quicker than the standard car around the Nurburgring Nordschleife, so naturally the 918’s recordbreaking lap of the track, in six minutes 57 seconds, was clocked with a Weissach Package-equipped car.

THE BYDESIGN INFLUENCE

This particular example that you see here finished in brilliant Guards Red (which is a rare color on the 918), is Weissach Package equipped. But for some discerning Hypercar owners, an exclusive automobile limited to a production run of just 918 units simply isn’t exclusive enough. Enter ByDesign Motorsport – a company based in Khobar, Saudi Arabia that helps owners with just that particular problem. When the owner (who does not wish to be named), commissioned the build, he did so combined with the sharp eye of ByDesign. Right from the build at the factory, this car got some extra special touches such as a black interior with Guards Red details to match the exterior. And once the car landed in the GCC, it was trucked over to the ByDesign studio for some more exclusive touches. Since Porsche will not budge on modifying certain details such as the electric green hue on the exterior logos, ByDesign took it upon themselves to trim the calipers, logos and the speedometer cluster in Guards Red. To finish it off, HRE wheels were thrown on along with tire stickers for that phat racecar look.

“FOR SOME DISCERNING HYPERCAR OWNERS, AN EXCLUSIVE AUTOMOBILE LIMITED TO A PRODUCTION RUN OF JUST 918 UNITS SIMPLY ISN’T EXCLUSIVE ENOUGH.”

ustangs, Camaros, Trans Ams, Chargers – you name it and there’s probably a muscle-car variant of it here in the Kingdom. But what we don’t have many of is the infamous Plymouth Barracuda. This car is famous for two things – one is JUST LOOK AT IT! It looks like the love child of a 1972 Challenger and some weird deep-sea creature. It is pure muscle car awesomeness embodied in the metal.

CLASSIC CULTURE

“THINK ABOUT THAT NUMBER FOR A A SECOND – THIS WAS IN THE EARLY 70’S! NOT EVEN A FERRARI COULD MATCH THOSE POWER NUMBERS BACK THEN!” The second reason is owing to the amazing power of the 426 HEMI engine that a few came standard with from the factory – putting out a whopping 426 horses to the rear tires. Think about that number for a a second – this was in the early 70’s! Not even a Ferrari could match those power numbers back then!

SO WHAT’S THE STORY WITH THIS ONE HERE?

Well, this here 1971 example has been completely restored from the ground up; and by restoration we don’t mean a simple respray and upholstery change; we mean everything from the bolts to the bushes is all new, and the best part is that the owner has decided to update all those with current parts meaning that this car now drives and handles like a new-age muscle car. The old adage of “It don’t handle but it sure as hell goes!” doesn’t apply to this muscle car. Uprated shocks and springs as well as poly bushings adorn the suspension, and the owner was sure to add a bit of rake – because Hot Rod. Things get a bit more interesting on the inside of this pristine muscle car; for starters, to keep things cool, this car has updated air conditioning, power window retrofit, updated digital gages, a custom auto shifter, classic steering wheel as well as thoroughly re-done leather upholstery. Things come to a head when you remove those nifty hood latch pins and pop the hood, because the sight of a fuel-injected 6.1 liter HEMI engine is what greets you. Yes, this car is powered by new-age MOPAR power, and it puts out an estimated 400 horses to the phat rear tires. Speaking of horses, the brakes have been updated with Wilwood discs and calipers all round to rein in all that power and torque and the wheels are newer classic retros shod in high performance rubber. No muscle car would be complete without that superb exhaust note and this thing has a custom race set up from the long tube headers down to the tail pipes. JUNE 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 73

BIKE NEWS

WORLD’S FIRST 3D PRINTED MOTORCYCLE REVEALED APWorks, a subsidiary of the enormous Airbus Aerospace company has unveiled the Light Rider, a limited production electric ‘motorcycle’ weighing a feather light 35kg but with a hefty £39,000 price tag. The frame and swingarm are 3D printed with a powdered metal called Scalmalloy (similar to aircraft grade aluminium) and the bike is powered by a 6kw electric motor. The rest of the bikes running gear is common to bicycles rather than motorcycles. Unlike the conventional process of frame design and manufacture, where the limitations of a machining process dictates much of the design, 3D printing is free of such constraints and can be designed using ‘bionic algorithms’, this explains the off-the-wall organic appearance. APWorks say the bike has a top speed of 50mph, accelerates to 30mph in three seconds and travels for 35 miles before needing recharging. APWorks is making 50 Light Riders, a 2000 deposit secures your place in the queue.

BMW REVEAL SUPERCHARGED R5 Helpmet’ reports crashes automatically WE’VE already seen that BMW is introducing an automatic system to call emergency services on some of its bikes next year but now a Thai innovation is hoping to achieve similar results from a newly-designed helmet. In some ways the ‘Helpmet’ seems a brighter idea than the self-reporting BMW. While the bike will automatically report accidents beyond a certain severity regardless of rider injuries, the Helpmet concept is to automatically call medics only if it’s subjected to impacts hard enough to result in unconsciousness. It basically incorporates the guts of a basic smartphone, including a SIM card, GPS and of course a connection to the phone network as well as impact sensors and a rechargeable battery. The system is only set off after impacts of 95g or higher, so accidental knocks or even a bit of light crashing shouldn’t have ambulances appearing at your door. But they will come looking if you’re lying unconscious in a ditch and they’ll have the precise coordinates to find you.

BMW have just revealed this stunning heritage-inspired bike with a supercharged, air-cooled 500cc boxer twin yet surrounded in modern parts as a tribute to the 1936 BMW R5 model. The bike is named the R5 Hommage and has just been unveiled this evening at the annual prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy and like the three bikes BMW

has shown over the past three years it’s officially nothing but a concept bike at this stage. At the heart of the R5 Hommage is an original air-cooled 500cc boxer twin which has been completely rebuilt after sustaining serious damage while it was being raced. Custom building brothers Ronny and Benny Noren rebuilt the motor according to the plans laid down by the BMW Design Team in Munich.

KAWASAKI’S SUPERCHARGED RETRO One of the most exciting prospects on the rumour mill from Japanese sources is the return of the legendary Z900 name by Kawasaki, which may boast a supercharged 900cc engine. Kawasaki have made no secret of their desire to reinvigorate their entire range of bikes, and right now it has nothing that can take the fight to the European firms in the modern retro category. Back in November 2015, Kawasaki showed a sketch of the concept SC-02 Soul Charger, a retro-themed bike which MCN understands may well bring back the H1 name.

NEW METAL

Honda adds CB1100 spice

Honda’s CB1100 Type II concept looks set to hit dealers next year. Big H has been tip-toeing around the tulips with the 1100 for a while now, but has finally decided on doing something dramatic with a full-blooded CB1100. The CB1100 was first launched in 2009 but only went on sale in a limited number of countries, appearing in the UK four years later to muted applause as it was a bit too refined and unexciting. A few weeks ago Honda showed two new versions of the CB1100 at the Osaka motorcycle show in Japan, and it now seems almost certain both of these bikes will make for the basis of a new split range.

BMW’S 160BHP K1600 BAGGER BMW previewed this model as a concept last May along with the Concept 101, which shared this bike’s hard panniers and cutdown windscreen. The finished bike is more of a conventional full-dress tourer, but unlike the Euro-style K1600GT and GTL it’s based on, the styling has something of an American flavour. The most obvious changes are at the back, where the conventional tail of the GT and GTL makes way for a redesigned rear end with drooping panniers, a lower

NEW INDIAN CHIEFTAIN DARK HORSE REVEALED

This is the new Indian Chieftain Dark Horse; a dechromed and blacked out version of the massive bagger first launched in 2014. The formula for this new version of the 1811cc water-cooled V-twin follows that of the Chief Dark Horse where almost all of the chromed parts are kept black for a meaner look. On this occasion the bike has the hard bags of the existing Chieftain model. The new Chieftain Dark Horse comes as standard with a single seat and short, tinted

power windscreen, keeps the remote-locking hard bags, ABS, electronic cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, audio with AM/FM and Bluetooth and a smartphone input and a remote key fob with keyless ignition. The dark parts include the mudguards, fairing, fuel tank and bags, the Indian Motorcycle headdress, forks, mirrors, handlebars, switchgear, indicators, tank instruments, engine and airbox cover, footboards and rear light housing are also blacked out.

pillion seat and long, horizontal exhausts. Meanwhile, the front bears a family resemblance to the other six-cylinder BMWs. Despite that, of all the outer panels only the headlight is carried over. With expensive technology including its adaptive ability to ‘steer’ its light around corners, it makes sense that the lamp is shared among the different models.

Husqvarna get brutal

Husqvarna are preparing to unleash this savagelooking 1301 super-naked in a bid to blow bikes like the Ducati Diavel into the weeds. This is the first time we have seen anything from the Husqvarna brand sporting a larger engine than the 690cc single-cylinder motor housed in the 701 Vitpilen concept first seen in 2013. We are expecting the production model to be revealed later this year. The template laid down by the existing Husqvarna models appears to be carried over to the 1301 in that as many parts as possible are transferred from the equivalent KTM model. In this case that means the 1301cc water-cooled V-twin packing 175bhp that is currently used in the 1290 family.

ishal Alneaimi took crowning glory at the final round of the BSBK last month. Alneaimi secured a fantastic double in the sixth and final round of the 2015/2016 Bahrain Superbike Championship to win all 12 races in the series’ historic inaugural season. All the action was held along BIC’s 2.55-kilometre Inner Track. Alneaimi was in a class of his own all season long in the BSBK, in which all participants were competing on identical Ducati 899 Panigale sports bikes. He would regularly win races by gaps of 10 seconds or more, and he maintained his winning advantage all the way to the last race of the campaign. The Qatari captured pole position with a fastest lap of one minute 07.745, which was nearly two seconds quicker than his closest rival. DECEMBER JUNE 2015 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 77

DUCATI 959 PANIGALE BIKERZONE

DUCATI STRIKES A HIGH NOTE WITH THE NEW 959 PANIGALE here are motorbikes and then there are motorbikes – Ducatis are the latter. With the introduction of the superb Panigale series, Ducati has once again powered through to the top of the superbike stack, and this latest two-wheeled rocket is no different. JUNE 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 81

BIKERZONE

DUCATI 959 PANIGALE

Building on the success formula of the 899 Panigale, the 959 slots into the sweet spot for those who wanted a bit more oomph than the 899 but with the same acute corner-carving balance that gets away with the 1000+CC engines (because more CC equals more weight, which means less tossing the bike through corners). Ducati wanted to create a bike that was the perfect balance between performance, power, and thrills mixed with usability, safety, and control.

SO WHAT’S DIFFERENT?

The engine has been warmed over by Ducati’s mad scientists and the 995 CC 90-degree V-twin Superquadro engine now makes 157 horsepower and 79 pound-feet of torque, which is a six and eight percent bump over the

82 www.arabiamotors.co I JUNE 2016

899. It also gets new head and case covers, as well as a new timing chain, gears, and guides so it can meet Euro 4 emissions and sound requirements. The added displacement was achieved by increasing the stroke of the engine, and thanks to Ducati’s addition of “showerhead” style fuel injectors low and mid range torque have improved significantly. The 959 also gets a slipper clutch, high-flow filter, and the exhaust system from the 1299 Panigale which increases to 60 mm in diameter. Exterior wise, the front face has been slightly widened, and the front intakes have

grown in proportion. The mirror stalks are also slightly shorter while the windshield has become slightly higher. The side fairings are also new and Ducati’s intention was to make the 959 look more akin to its 1299 sibling – something that they’ve achieved quite well as far as we are concerned. Chassis wise, the swingarm pivot has been lowered by 4 mm which increases the wheelbase by 5 mm, which adds mechanical grip on corner exit and better straight line/ high speed stability. The 959 weighs in at just 171 kilograms.

“The engine has been warmed over by Ducati’s mad scientists and the 995 CC 90-degree V-twin Superquadro engine now makes 157 horsepower.”
