AIC Bahrain, has unveiled the all-new BAIC X65, the first urban SUV for the Brand based on SAAB technology. REVAMPED LUXURY INFINITI DEBUTS REFRESHED QX50
I
nfiniti Bahrain held a launch event to unveil the 2016 Infiniti QX50 in the presence of Mr Fareed Almoayyed, Deputy Chairman, Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, senior company management, guests and members of the media. From an exterior design perspective the QX50 has been enhanced for 2016 with a new front and rear bumper and lower front end and rear facia. The exterior has many signature Infiniti touches, including a double-arch grille, large L-shaped headlights, available xenon auto-levelling headlights with Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), integrated fog lights and distinctive LED taillights. The QX50 is being offered with a 3.7-litre V6 engine, rated at 326 horsepower. All engines are matched to an advanced 7-speed automatic transmission, which allows for sportier shifts during spirited driving. The Infiniti QX50 also features a host of technological advancements that include; Streaming Audio via Bluetooth wireless technology, Advanced Around View Monitor (AVM) which includes front and rear sonar, 7-inch colour display with Infiniti Controller. Also available is the optional Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with a colour touch-screen display that is additionally complimented with the Bose Premium Audio System with 11 speakers.

he new Porsche 911 range has arrived at the Porsche Centre Bahrain, showcasing cutting-edge technological advancements in what is the most highly evolved 911 to date. The new 911 Carrera produces 370 hp, whilst the 911 Carrera S delivers 420 hp, thanks to a combination of turbochargers with modified compressors, enhanced exhaust system and tuned engine management. This allows the 911 Carrera to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds – making it two tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The 911 Carrera S with PDK and Sport Chrono Package performs its showcase discipline in just 3.9 seconds. Regarded as the top athletes in the range thanks to a 3.8-litre six-cylinder biturbo engine, the 911 Turbo now delivers 540 hp, with the coupe model sprinting from zero to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds. Top speed in the new 911 Turbo is 320 km/h, 5 km/h faster than the previous model. Meanwhile, the 911 Turbo S develops 580 hp thanks to new turbochargers with larger compressors. It is also the first production 911 to accelerate to 100 km/h in less than three seconds, reaching the milestone speed in 2.9 seconds. The model’s top speed is 330 km/h, 12 km/h higher than its predecessor. The new Porsche 911 is now available for order at Porsche Centre Bahrain. The retail price for the standard 911 Carrera base model starts at BHD 36,400.

oyota Bahrain has revealed the all-new 2016 Toyota Innova Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) early last month at their showroom in Sitra, with the attendance of Ebrahim K. Kanoo’s top management and Toyota officials. The new Innova, which can comfortably seat up to seven passengers, combines the essence of an MPV with the versatility of an SUV. The global model we know today debuted in 2004 and over the years, the Innova’s superb versatility, impressive performance and excellent value have earned customers and admirers the world over. The Innova is available with a 2.7-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 164 HP and 25.0 Kg-m of torque. onda Bahrain have launched the all-new Civic at an event held at their Sitra showroom late last month (April 2016). The event was attended by members of the media, invited guests and folks from Honda Motor Co. This was perhaps one of the coolest launches that we’ve attended in a while, since Honda also got the local Honda Club together for a cool display of modded Hondas outside the showroom. The new Civic has been a long time coming and is a proper game

changer for the C-segment with its style, features and power train package. Two engine choices are offered – a 2.0 liter four cylinder that puts out 155h and a rangetopping, region exclusive RS variant that comes with a 1.5 liter turbocharged four that puts out 185 hp. Porsche brings in the Macan GTS T The all-new Macan GTS has arrived at Porsche Centre Bahrain. Bearing the GTS insignia, the latest addition to the Macan range features a re-engineered chassis, reinforced brakes, along with a 20 hp increase from
the Macan S. Like all other GTS models, it combines sporty design with superior driving dynamics. Under the hood an output of 360 hp and 500 Nm of torque places the Macan GTS in-between the
Macan S and the Macan Turbo. The technical basis for this comprises of a three-litre V6 twin-turbo engine from the Macan S, accompanied by the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and Porsche Traction Management (PTM) with flexible power distribution between front and rear axles. Completing the zero to 100 km/h sprint in 5.0 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package, the Macan GTS has a top speed of 256 km/h. Deliveries of the Macan GTS will commence this month and the basic retail price in Bahrain is BHD 30,300.

Land Rover MENA was selected as the overall winner in the automotive category at the World Media Awards held recently in London. The luxury SUV manufacturer was honoured with the award for its innovative communications platform MYLAND (Ardhi in Arabic) which was created exclusively for the MENA region to celebrate the impact the Arab culture has had on today’s modern society. Launched in 2014, the MYLAND campaign broke new ground for Land Rover as its first regional creative communications campaign.

TOYOTA MIRAI WINS 2016 WORLD GREEN CAR AWARD
The Toyota Mirai was declared the 2016 World Green Car recently at the New York International Auto Show. In order to win the award, tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption and use of a major advanced power plant technology (beyond engine components), aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle’s environmental responsibility, were all taken into consideration. The Mirai was chosen from an initial entry list of eight new vehicles from all over the world. Toyota is no stranger to the World Car Awards program – now in its 12th year. The Toyota Prius 2010 has previously earned ‘Top Three in the World’ status for both the World Green Car and the overall World Car of the Year categories. In addition, the Toyota 86 was a ‘Top Three in the World’ finalist for World Car of the Year in 2013; the Toyota iQ in 2009 for the same category; and the Toyota Harrier Hybrid in 2006 for World Green Car.
Qatar “concerned” over VW
T
he former prime minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jaber Al Thani has admitted concern over the recent problems affecting Volkswagen. The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), which was run by Sheikh Hamad until three years ago, is the third-largest investor in the German car giant, whose shares have fallen 34 percent since an emissions scandal was revealed seven months ago.
Reports last September suggest that the QIA suffered as much as $12 billion in paper losses in the third quarter of last year, thanks to the poor stock performance of some parts of its portfolio, including Volkswagen, commodities trader Glencore and Agricultural Bank of China. Sheikh Hamad said that Qatari investments should not be judged on the stake performances that had created the most headlines, as other lesser-known investments
were performing well. With regard to Deutsche Bank, the lender in which Sheikh Hamad holds a 3 percent stake via Paramount Services Holding, the former prime minister said that he had faith in the strength of the German economy. Earlier this year, Sheikh Hamad backed Deutsche Bank chairman Paul Achleitner, who has been under pressure following a 50 percent decline in the firm’s share price over the past year.
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT CUP 2 TYRES on the BMW M4 GTS
S
pecially developed versions of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres will be the sole original equipment fitment on the new limited special model BMW M4 GTS. As a track car that is approved for road use, the job of Michelin’s engineers was to design an ultra-high-performance tyre which is able to operate safely in a variety of road and track conditions around the world. To this end, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres for the BMW M4 GTS were produced using not only Bi-Compound asymmetric tread patterns but also an asymmetric casing design. This offers the optimum balance between handling, grip and tyre life. During the development process Michelin produced and tested more than 1,000 prototype tyres and 400 special series tyres, which were tested, by both Michelin and BMW M test drivers.

Bentley launches GT Speed & Black Edition B
Bentley has unveiled the revised Continental GT Speed, raising the bar even further in terms of exclusivity and performance. The fastest production Bentley ever, with a top speed of 331 km/h, now delivers even more power and torque, and a striking new Black Edition model joins the Speed family. Engineers at Bentley in Crewe have
developed even more muscle from the Continental’s iconic 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine. The GT Speed now produces 642 PS - up from 635 PS - and 20 Nm of extra torque, bringing its total to a forceful 840 Nm. This additional torque is applied through the entire rev range via careful reoptimisation of boost control, raising the Grand Tourer’s renowned “torque
plateau” of continuous maximum torque delivery from 2,000-5,000 rpm, and bringing even greater acceleration performance. As a result, the 0-60 mph sprint time has dropped to just 3.9 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.1 secs). Bentley is also introducing the Continental GT Speed Black Edition which celebrates the rich and striking depth of the GT’s
Infiniti sets all-time sales records

hroughout EMEA (Europe, Russia, Middle East and Africa), Infiniti sold almost 10,000 vehicles, up 51% from Q1 of 2015. In line with the growth in sales, the company established more new dealerships at a record pace. In the last twelve months Infiniti opened 25 new Centers. In the first quarter, most Infiniti vehicles were delivered to customers in the UK. For the
first time more than 1,340 cars were retailed – in the same quarter of the previous year the figure was around 360. In France, sales went up to 1,359 cars in the first three months of 2016 versus 345 in the respective period of 2015. During the month of March, almost 1,000 Infiniti cars were sold in the UK as well as in France, nearly five times as many as in both markets in March 2015. From January to

March, Infiniti in Germany has almost tripled sales up to 863 in the first three months of 2016. In the Italian market, 570 vehicles were sold year-to-date. The Middle East is among the most successful regions for Infiniti globally, with more than 2,400 vehicles sold in the last three months, which accounted for the best ever sales figures for three consecutive months in Infiniti Middle East’s history.

RABIE CLAIMS BMR 600 Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) hosted the BMR 600 challenge as part of the National Racing Day which was organised by BIC, in cooperation with the Bahrain Motor Federation. The BMR 600 was staging round two of three for 2016, and Chris Rabie made it two wins from two rounds to continue his perfect start to his campaign. From pole position, he stormed to a fine victory in race one in 14:21.422, ending the sprint nearly an entire minute ahead of runner-up Harry Johnston who was 58.493s back. David Wynne finished third 1:15.781 adrift. In race two, Rabie won in 14:27.142. This time he was 1:10.540 clear of second-placer Wynne, while Greg Brown was third having completed just 10 of the 11 laps. The season finale of the championship will be on May 6.
HASAN & EBRAHIM SHARE SPOILS IN SWS KARTING
Hussain Hasan and Ahmed Ebrahim claimed a victory apiece in the sixth round of the 2015/2016 Bahrain SWS Sprint Championship (SSWS), held last month (April 2016) at Bahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC) in Sakhir. Hasan won a highly exciting first race in which the first five finishers were all classified within two seconds of the winner; while Ebrahim followed suit with a fine win in race two to cap another exciting edition of the Bahrain Karting Sprints Championship (BKSC). The meeting was organised by BIKC in cooperation with Bahrain International Circuit and the Bahrain Motor Federation. All participants were competing in identical Sodikarts.
In the SSWS first race, Abdulla Buhindi was on pole after clocking a best lap of one minute 13.047 seconds during qualifying. Hasan was starting from fifth, but managed to make his way to the front by the chequered flag. The youngster completed the 11-lap race in 13 minutes 35.896 seconds. Buhinidi was a close runner-up 0.753s behind, while Ali Baslar rounded out the podium finishers 1.233s back. In race two, Ebrahim was the man to beat as he claimed the victory in a total race time of 13:28.663. Mahtre improved on his classification from race one and managed to step up onto the podium for second place 3.265s behind Ebrahim. Ali Abdulla was third 3.359s back. At the end of all the action, the winners were presented their respective trophies in a podium ceremony.
ALNEAIMI TRIUMPHS IN BSBK Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) hosted the Bahrain Superbike Championship last month. The BSBK was held as part of the National Racing Day which was organized by the BIC, in cooperation with the Bahrain Motor Federation. Qatari rider Mishal Alneaimi was the man to beat once again in what was the season’s fourth and penultimate meeting. After already winning the first six races of the season, the experienced

biker added another double to his tally. He won the first 11-lap sprint from pole in 13:05.498, enjoying a gap of 8.503s from closest driver Fahad Al Suwaidi. Ali Al Shammari finished in third 11.546s back. In race two, Alneaimi sealed his fine double in 13:05.498, with Al Suwaidi (+8.503s) and Al Shammari (+11.546s) completing the same podium. The season finale of the championship will be on May 6.
PORSCHE WIN OPENING ROUND OF 2016 WEC SEASON Stewards of the Meeting decided to exclude the car from the race. Porsche’s no. 2 919 Hybrid, driven by Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb was therefore declared the winner. Audi have since made an appeal. The 2016 WEC season resumes with the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps on May 7. This year’s championship features nine rounds in all, with Bahrain International Circuit hosting the ninth and final meeting on November 19 later this year.
Porsche Team were named the winners of the 6 Hours of Silverstone in the UK, held last month (April 2016) as the season-opening round of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The defending world champions took home the maximum points despite crossing the finish line behind rivals Audi Sport Team Joest. However, post-race scrutineering revealed that Audi’s winning no. 7 car was not in compliance with a Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1) Technical Regulation (thickness of the front skid block), and the

a 1m18.947s tour of the two-mile Californian street circuit – a new qualifying lap record for the series. The new McLaren 570S GT4 made its competitive race debut with championship debutants Ciaran Haggerty and Sandy Mitchell qualifying in P7, and finishing in P6 in class. On the challenging Brands Hatch GP circuit, the 570S GT4 ran faultlessly all weekend, and was immediately competitive in the 16-car strong GT4 field. Factory Driver Rob Bell and teammate Alisdair McCaig in the 650S GT3 finished the 120-minute race in P7 overall.
The MINI ALL4 Racing crew of Yazeed Al Rajhi (KSA) and co-driver Timo Gottschalk (GER) completed the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, round two of the 2016 FIA Cross Country World Cup, with a hardearned second place. Joining them on the rostrum in third place was the fellow MINI ALL4 Racing crew of Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) and Michel Perin (FRA). Further success for MINI came with four MINI ALL4 Racing completing the race within the top five, and a total of five of these iconic long-distance cross-country rally cars completed within the top ten.
On a busy weekend on both sides of the Atlantic for McLaren, Factory Driver Alvaro Parente starred in the 650S GT3, securing pole position and winning in his first appearance at Long Beach in the Pirelli World Challenge. Closer to home, the 650S GT3 and 570S GT4 – the latter making its competitive global debut – both scored points in the British GT Championship, finishing P7 and P5 in the respective classes at Brands Hatch, UK. Stateside, Parente put the #9 K-PAX Racing 650S GT3 on pole with

The BIC 2,000cc Challenge was holding the seventh and penultimate round of its 2015/2016 season. Following a slow start that saw him qualify sixth on the grid, Shaikh Salman, driving a Honda CIVIC, managed to clinch the weekend’s opening 12-lap sprint. Shaikh Salman took the chequered flag in a total race time of 16 minutes 16.023 seconds. He managed to overcome some late car trouble en route to claiming his victory around BIC’s
2.55-kilometre Inner Track. Mohammed Faqihi, also driving a CIVIC, was a close runnerup finishing just 0.760 seconds behind Shaikh Salman, while Alex Longden in a BMW 3Series/F20C rounded out the podium placers 6.807s back. In race two, it was Shaikh Hamad’s turn to triumph. He too was driving a CIVIC, and he had won with a time of 16:17.295. Longden finished second for the second time in the day 11.956s behind the winner, while Mohammed Faqihi was a distant third 28.933s. Shaikh Salman managed to claim fourth place 34.678s adrift. he beautiful blue sportscar you see here is the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spider. And yes – that really is the car’s proper name! It’s the latest work from Italian design house Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary. As you can see, it’s a work of art, but what you can’t see is that, like the hardtop version that came before it, this car is actually based on the bones of an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. That means it’s bound to be a rare beast, since only 500 8C coupes and 500 8C Spiders were ever built. Apparently, just seven of these droptops are planned, and each one will be painted in a different color. The hue we see on the car that’s debuting at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show is called Blue Ceruleo, which we figure pretty much means Sky Blue. Here’s hoping at least one comes in a green scheme similar to the one shown off at Geneva back in 2014. We don’t have any details about what powers the Disco Volante Spider, but we’d guess it uses the same 4.7-liter V8 and six-speed semi-automatic transmission that powered all the original 8C models. That would mean 444 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, a 0-60 run 4-ish seconds and a top speed of around 180 miles per hour. But the actual performance seems mostly superfluous to the Disco Volante Spider’s real mission, which is to look pretty. 32 www.arabiamotors.co I MAY 2016

Now, Toyota have gone and turned the volume up on the Fortuner, transforming it from a beast of burden into something that looks luxurious and oozes some class. The Fortuner’s Chief Engineer Hiroki Nakajima, puts it across best: “Our development concept was to build a true SUV that has style and confidence. The all-new Fortuner is the outcome of our continuous efforts to redefine toughness while offering our customers powerful vehicles with drastically improved off-road capabilities. To ensure peace of mind for our customers, we developed a new stronger frame, which enables the vehicle to withstand rough road conditions, in addition to an improved four-link
suspension system for a more comfortable drive. The new engine offers high torque at lower RPMs. Furthermore, the design concept is rough but cool, with three bold, iconic lines. On top of all of this, the all-new Fortuner offers premium utility and safety features.” Who are we to mess with the words of this man, especially when the end result looks as great as it does! You could almost mistake the rear end of the Fortuner for a Lexus. Toyota says that they have created a new “Solid Fluidity” design language for the Fortuner. The Fortuner is available with a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which produces
164hp and a 4.0-litre V6 engine, which puts out 235hp. The Fortuner offers a 6-speed automatic transmission, which maximises engine potential and multi-stage gears optimised for torque in the low-speed range. The Fortuner’s suspension is tuned for maximum passenger comfort. The suspension uses a double wishbone (front) and a four-link suspension (rear) combo. An additional rear stabiliser has been installed to aid on-the-road smoothness and stability. There is also a Drive Mode Switch that allows you to choose from ECO or POWER driving modes. The Fortuner also features a 4WD rotary knob.

NISSAN’S SKUNKWORKS GETS THEIR HANDS ON THE PATROL nd this is exclusively for the Middle East, sorry folks across the world – it just goes to show how much we here love the Patrol. So what’s different about the Patrol Nismo? Well, apart from the badging, the super Patrol is based on the top of the line LE variant that puts out 400hp from its direct-injected 5.6 liter V8. Nismo tweaks said V8 to put out an additional 28hp for a total of 428 horses. Although details are a bit sketchy, we are assuming that this is done mainly through a revised and more aggressive computer tune, as well as a free flowing exhaust system. Nissan are claiming that the Nismo Patrol has 70 percent more torque over the entire rev-range. DYNAMICS 0 the news is in, and the word is out – we are heading toward an era where emissions and fuel economy take priority over brute performance and we’re seeing the shift everywhere – especially in supercars and sports cars. Performance icons that have embodied the same mantra over
the years have changed their ways and modified their means of power delivery. Which brings us to what can only be best described as two of the holy grails of the sports car world. The continent crushing 911 and its entry-level sibling-the Boxster (and Cayman for that matter) have got revised power trains to keep the emissiongurus happy. MAY 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 53

SO WHAT HAS HAPPENED?
THE INTERIOR
Well, to keep it short and simple, the entire Porsche range is going turbocharged. The new 911 (from the base Carrera up except the GTS) gets a 3.0 liter flat-6 engine with twin turbochargers and the Boxster and Cayman – now monikered “718” have been downsized with four cylinder Boxer engines fitted with turbos. That’s the bad news for all you Porschephilies out there. The good news is that despite the downsizing, power numbers are up across the board and the 911 hasn’t lost any bit of its 911-ness.
Again, it may appear to be similar to the outgoing version, but is the details that matter; The touchscreen infotainment system now wakes up if you thumb it and features Apple Car Play. Elsewhere, the steering wheel has been redesigned and if you opt for the Sport Chrono Package, you get a little dial mounted on the right of the center spoke (similar to the Manettino in a Ferrari), that allows you to select driving modes viz. Sport, Sport Plus, and Normal. It also features a center button that allows the car to go into “Overboost” mode for 20 seconds, basically throwing the powertrain and chassis into full attack for maximum acceleration. The overall layout remains the same from the outgoing 991.1 version and in traditional Porsche fare, every material and surface is absolutely top notch.
WHAT’S NEW IN THE 911? All right I know you’re thinking, “oh it looks exactly the same!” but the devil is in the details. For starters, the rear engine cover now has vertically-oriented striations as opposed to horizontal – done to increase airflow to the engine and intercoolers and to aid in aerodynamics. There are various other subtle changes to the front fascia with contoured lines in the lower bumper and the addition of LED driving lights on the outer ring of the headlights a-la the previous Turbo. The rear bumper is also restyled and if you check the box marked “Sport exhaust”, you get two tailpipes jutting out from the center of the rear diffuser – very traditional rear-engined race car style.

WHAT’S UNDER THE HOOD? To start off, the Carrera’s 3.0-liter twin turbocharged Flat-6 puts out 370 horsepower at 6500 rpm (20 more than before) and 331 lb-ft of torque (44 more) from 1700 to 5000 rpm. That is a substantial difference over the old. Opt for the Carrera S however, and things begin to get more interesting – the twin turbochargers on the S’s 3.0 liter 6 have Variable Turbine Geometry (the same

CHASSIS WISE There are a lot of changes; for starters, PASM or Porsche Active Suspension Management now comes standard on the Carrera and allows for a much wider range of adjustment and the coil springs and anti-roll bars are also revised. In addition to this, the rear wheels are about half an inch wider. On the Carrera S, you can opt for a more aggressive PASM Sport that lowers the car further and you can also get rear wheel steering that first made its debut on the 911 GT3 and Turbo. When equipped with the Sport Chrono package, the stability-control system now offers three modes: full on, PSM Sport (which allows you some leeway for tail-out action), and full off. 56 www.arabiamotors.co I MAY 2016

As for stopping power, Carreras get larger four-piston front calipers and wider front rotors. Carrera S models get larger and lighter “floating” front rotors that are set on the aluminum hubs with pins. The pads are larger, too, and come from the 911 Turbo. Opt for ceramic brakes and you get the Turbo S’s 16.1-inch ceramic rotors and six-piston calipers in front and 15.4-inch rotors at the rear.
WHAT DOES ALL THIS TRANSLATE INTO? Well let’s start off with some numbers – the previous Carrera could get from standstill to 100kph in about 4.4 seconds; the new turbocharged Carrera can do it in 4.0 seconds flat with the PDK and Sport Chrono package as per Porsche’s claims. Independent testing has put that number closer to 3.8 seconds out in the real world. It goes without saying that the Carrera S can trump that number by a few tenths and all this is before we get to the Carrera 4S, which we’re sure can blitz through in just under 3.5 seconds. Think about it – that’s previous-gen 911 Turbo
performance on the base Carrera and Carrera S. Out on the road, you can notice the whistling noise of the turbochargers – especially if you’re in Sport or Sport Plus, and if you drop the windows you can hear the faint whistle of the blow-off valves and the crackle of the exhaust as you let off the throttle. The addition of turbochargers have done wonders for the midrpm “whomp” that you feel; plant the throttle and the Carrera will pin you back into the seat and accelerates with a ferocity that can only be matched by a proper supercar. The Carrera S will give you a momentary high if you use launch control as your blood leaves the recesses of your brain and makes its way to your feet. The performance is nothing short of explosive. The electric steering is direct and telepathic and equipped with optional rear wheel steering, the average Porsche driver will reach his or her physical limits long before you even hear a tire chirp. And that’s just what one needs to expect from Porsche – a company that literally took the worst placed engine configuration in a car (slung over the rear) and turned it into what is quite essentially the best sports car in the world. Porsche Debuts The New Boxster with a New Engine and A New Name The elephant in the room is that the new Boxster now features a turbocharged flat-4 Boxer engine, moving away from the naturally aspirated 6. So has the addition of forced induction and two less cylinders dampened what is perhaps the best midengined entry-level Porsche? The simple answer is No. Do I miss the raucous wail of the Flat-6? Yes a little bit, but the performance numbers more than make up for it; the new Boxster is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-4 and that puts out 300 hp which is near the same as the outgoing Boxster S, and the new 718 Boxster S gets a 2.5 liter turbo flat-4 that makes 350 hp. This puts the 0-100kph time for the 718 Boxster at a Porscheclaimed 4.5 seconds when equipped with the PDK and Sport

Chrono package and a colossal 4.0 seconds to 100kph for a similarly equipped Boxster S. Knowing Porsche’s reputation for down-playing the stats, independent testing has put the new Boxster S at an amazing 3.9 seconds to 100kph. That’s as fast as the outgoing Carrera GTS just for reference. Top speeds are up as well with the Boxster being able to hit 275 kph and the Boxster S will keep going to 285 kph.
SO WHERE DID THE 718 MONIKER COME FROM? From the historic 718 mid-engined four cylinder racecars of the 1960s; so it just makes sense that Porsche would name the new Boxster and Cayman along those lines.

BOXSTER WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO DRIVE? To start off, the base Boxster now sounds more like an Impreza WRX at idle – not surprising since they do share the same engine layout – a four pot Boxer engine accompanied by a turbo. The increase in performance is readily apparent and the Boxster will scream to its 7,400 rpm redline with nary a hint of turbo lag. If you opt for the Sport Chrono Package, you get the same dial on the steering wheel like the 911s – and you can select from Normal, Sport or Sport Plus modes along with the “Sport Response” button that will provide maximum performance for 20 seconds. Would you miss the flat-6? Yes and no; you do feel the four cylinder Boxer start to lean out towards the middle of the rev band, where the flat-6 would just be coming alive. Then again, as I’ve mentioned before, the overall power numbers make all the difference. The Boxster S on the other hand is a completely different ball game. Start up the S and you can immediately hear the edgier engine note. Slot it into drive and plant the throttle, and the S will take off similar to the previous Boxster GTS. The 2.5-liter
COVERSTORY
Boxer four sounds eerily similar to the flat-6 and if no one were to tell you that it was a four pot, you’d never be able to guess. The Boxster S is voraciously fast and incredibly rewarding to drive – especially if you spec it with the Sport Chrono Package and the S-only PASM Sport that affords even tighter suspension settings and a drop of 10mm over the regular Boxster.
WHAT ELSE IS DIFFERENT? In typical Porsche fashion, the exterior gets a slight nip and tuck with revised headlights and taillights as well as 718 badging on the back and Porsche lettering on a little black recess between the bumper and the spoiler. The interior gets a new steering wheel and a new infotainment system with Apple Car Play as an option.
WHICH ONE WOULD WE GET? The Boxster S with the Sport Chrono Package – the loss of the 6 is something that you wont hear, feel or lament.
