718 is the Winning Number PORSCHE BAHRAIN LAUNCH THE SUPERLATIVE 718 BOXSTER RANGE
erging tradition and visionary technology, the new Porsche 718 Boxster has arrived in Bahrain, following a comprehensive redevelopment of the mid-engine roadster for more power, increased torque, a higher top speed and a stylish redesign. Twenty years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche is introducing a new model designation with the generation change. The models are now known as the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S. A direct descendant of the victorious 718 which took numerous race wins in the 1950s and 1960s, the new two-seater convertibles continue the tradition of four-cylinder flat engines, featuring the latest technology evolved by Porsche’s engineers. When compared to the previous generation, both models attest a gain of 35 hp and up to 13 per cent lower consumption. The 718 Boxster is driven by a newly developed, 2-litre, 300 hp engine with innovative turbocharging. The increase in torque is even more dramatic with a 35 per cent rise and results in a maximum of up to 380 Newton metres. Featuring a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG), the 718 Boxster S boasts 2.5 litres of engine displacement and 350 hp, with maximum torque at 420 Newton metres. When equipped with Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and Sport Chrono Package, the new 718 Boxster accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, whilst the S-version achieves the same in 4.2 seconds. The top speed for the base model is 275 km/h; its bigger sibling tops out at 285km/h. The new Porsche 718 Boxster models are available in Bahrain now with a basic retail price of: 718 Boxster

The ultimate in luxury: Vision MercedesMaybach 6 very August classic car fans from around the world converge on Pebble Beach in California for a very special beauty contest. This gathering of magnificent classic cars is the perfect place to premiere the exclusive Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, a sensational luxury-class coupé. The 2+2-seater is a homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés and consciously carries this tradition forward into the future. The coupé reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extreme way, following the Mercedes design philosophy of sensual purity. The Vision MercedesMaybach 6, which measures almost six metres in length, is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 750 hp. The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA). With its sensual, emotional design (“hot”) and intelligent details (“cool”), the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car - the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse - recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design - this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles.

BMW retro range set to grow t least two further versions of the BMW R nineT are set to go on sale in 2017. Information shows that the 2017 R nineT line-up will include four models. As well as the R nineT and R nineT Scrambler, there will be new ‘Pure’ and ‘Racer’ versions.
20 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
The R nineT Pure is expected to be at the bottom of BMW’s retro boxer range. Sharing the 110bhp, 1170cc air-cooled engine as the rest of the range, its suspension and brakes will be stripped back. The Racer is expected to sit at the other end of the range. Styled as a homage to the R90 S, and looking rather like the Roland
Sands Concept 90 of 2013, it’s to be a sporty, part-faired take on the theme. Expect clip-on bars, a small Imola-style nose cowl, a café racer-style seat unit, and a price tag somewhere nearer the R nineT Roadster – but as this bike will still feature lower-spec suspension and cycle parts.

‘Car drifting’ to earn tougher penalties in Saudi Arabia audi Arabia is to introduce tougher penalties for stunt driving on the kingdom’s roads. So-called “car drifting” has become a popular pastime of Saudi youth. The practice involves tipping a car onto its side and driving on two wheels and is considered highly dangerous. The Council of Ministers have approved new penalties for anyone caught drifting or otherwise driving dangerously. For the first offence,
the car would be impounded for 15 days, the driver would be fined SR20,000 ($5,332) and would be referred to court to determine a jail sentence. Second time offenders would be fined SR40,000 ($10,665), their cars would be
impounded for a month and the driver is referred to court. Third time violators would be fined SR60,000 ($15,998), the car would be impounded, and the court would consider confiscating the vehicle permanently. Penalties against drifting have been strengthened in the past to SR1,000 ($266) for first offense, SR1,500 ($399) for second offense, and SR2,000 ($533) for third offense, plus other penalties depending on the circumstances. However, authorities deemed the fine too low.
‘Consumer protection counters’ at Dubai auto dealerships to cut complaints onsumer protection counters could be added to car showrooms in Dubai to help consumers and traders to resolve complaints more quickly. Officials from the emirate’s Department of Economic Development (DED) held a meeting with seven automobile dealers including Al Rostamani Automobiles, Al Futtaim Motors, Juma Al Majid Automobiles and Gargash Enterprises to discuss the counters. Dealers were briefed on the guidelines regarding the project and the need for establishing the counters by the beginning of 2017, the DED said in a statement. The counters are a DED initiative to enable consumers and traders resolve complaints without the need to elevate them to DED Consumer Protection. The automobile sector accounted for 2,430 of the consumer complaints we received in the first half of 2016, revealed Mohammed Ali Rashid Lootah, CEO of CCCP (Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection).

Point and Shoot
MOVE OVER HELLCAT, THE ZL1 IS HERE TO AVENGE THE CROWN
W
ith the Challenger Hellcat’s performance called into question off-late with its 707HP not translating into sharp numbers at the track or on the street, Chevrolet has thrust its Camaro ZL1 back into the viewfinder of muscle car enthusiasts worldwide with this new, refreshed, and even more powerful version. When we drove the V6 variant of the new Camaro earlier this year, we were surprised with the amount of power and performance that it afforded – we likened it more to a Porsche than a muscle car, so this new ZL1 should be the muscle car of the year. Packing an even 640hp and 640lb.ft of torque from its supercharged 6.2 liter V8 LT4 mill – the same one found in the C7 Z06, independent testing has already put the ZL1 in supercar territory, with a 3.9 second 0-100kph sprint. The ZL1 comes standard with
32 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
a six-speed manual with active rev-matching capability; however, the big surprise is that the ZL1 will be the first GM product to offer the new 10-speed automatic transmission. Nearly all of the Z06’s best components are present in the ZL1, from the magnetorheological dampers to an electronically controlled limited-slip differential to GM’s impressive Performance Traction Management system. Standard 20-inch wheels are wrapped with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires in staggered sizes of 285/30 up front and 305/30 at the rear. The front splitter, rocker-panel extensions, and rear wing all are designed to improve the car’s aerodynamics for better high-speed stability. Helping with engine cooling, the hollowed-out Chevrolet “flowtie” badge makes its way onto the ZL1 after first appearing on the previous-generation Z/28. A new hood with the requisite power bulge incorporates a heat extractor, and the reworked lower grille maximizes airflow.

THE PORSCHE PANAMERA IS THE FOUR-DOOR SUPERCAR OF THIS YEAR
T
The Panamera is the first model built off the Volkswagen Group’s MSB architecture (Modularer Standard-Baukasten, or modular standard architecture—with “standard” here indicating a front-engine, rear- or four-wheel-drive layout). The powertrains are new. There will be a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 in the Panamera 4S, rated at 440 horsepower, and a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 in the Panamera Turbo, good for 550 horsepower. Expect a Turbo S again, this time with at least 600 horsepower. Initially, all Panameras will feature all-wheel drive and
34 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
a ZF-sourced eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. The new Panamera’s performance encroaches on supercar territory. The 4S, which shares its engine with the upcoming Audi RS4 and RS5, charges from zero to 100kph in a claimed 4.2 seconds; the Turbo manages it in 3.6 seconds, and in both cases, the optional Sport Chrono package shaves off a further 0.2 second thanks to its launch-control function. Stated top speed is 290 kph for the 4S and 305 kph for the Turbo, but knowing Porsche, expect those figures to be conservative, with the Panamera having the ability to far exceed those numbers.
The interior has been completely upgraded, both up front and in the rear. The Panamera comes with an entirely rethought and redesigned user interface. While keeping the previous model’s aesthetics, characterized by angular horizontal lines and an array of buttons, the new model switches to a touchscreen interface in the center console both in the front and (optionally) in the rear. GOING WATERLESS KAR PERFORMANCE SHOWS YOU HOW TO KEEP YOUR ENGINE COOL WITH EVANS WATERLESS COOLANTS
38 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
EVANS WATERLESS COOLANTS ADVERTISING FEATURE oolants are a finicky thing – first you need to get the parts of water and antifreeze just right and then there comes the inevitable drain, flush and refill every year or so – depending on how you drive. Get any of those wrong though, and you run the risk of getting those engine temps in the red given our pleasant weather or worse- blowing the engine entirely. So KAR Performance offers a pretty cool solution to these issues – in the form of Evans Waterless Coolants.
WHAT IS WATERLESS COOLANT?
As the name suggests, Evans waterless coolants are devoid of the need to mix water into your cooling system. Eliminating water means that the problems associated with losing coolant to evaporation over time are negated. Thus, your coolant level remains stable for longer. As a matter of fact, Evans Waterless coolants are filled for life – meaning once you fill up with this product, you don’t ever have to worry about replacing the coolant in your engine ever again. Water is an excellent fluid for cooling as long as it remains in a liquid state, but when water turns to steam it has virtually no capacity for heat transfer. Evans waterless coolant is a superior fluid for transferring heat in engines because it remains in a liquid state until above 375°F—well above the operating temperature of an engine. Within an engine cooling system, the hottest surfaces are those adjacent to the combustion chamber, specifically the cylinder liners and cylinder head. These hot spots cause water to vaporize, preventing efficient cooling and causing loss of performance and unnecessary engine damage. When the coolant fails in this way the engine becomes even hotter, causing more hot spots and more steam. Evans waterless coolants will not boil around these engine hotspots, maintaining efficient cooling performance even when the engine is put under extreme conditions. When water turns to steam it pressurizes the cooling system, putting stress on hoses and other components. The significantly higher boiling point of Evans coolants means significantly less pressure than water, resulting in a less stressed cooling system. Water contains oxygen, which causes corrosion and also allows electrolytic activity which further damages engine metals. Evans waterless coolants eliminate corrosion and electrolytic activity, significantly increasing the life of the engine.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? ● Filled for life – no need for coolant flushes or replacement. ● Higher boiling point of 180 degrees Celsius – your engine runs cooler for longer. ● No more cooling-system failures owing to low coolant levels. ● Protect your engine against overheating, corrosion and failure. ● KAR Performance Bahrain are authorized distributors and installers. BURN SOME ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BLACK STUFF t doesn’t matter if you drive an unrestored 60’s muscle car, grand tourer, JDM, truck, SUV or simply a clapped out piece of crap- if your tires are shot, there’s gonna be no joy in driving it around- and if its already crap, the drive is going to be even crappier. Sadly though, around our parts, people simply don’t seem to give a hoot about the kind of tires that they run on their cars and the general attitude seems to be “anything will do”. Unless of course it comes to the Drag and Drift crowd who ride street slicks into the ground with abandon. For all intents and purposes, the main objective of this article is to educate you non-believers out there in the nuances of tires and the importance those big black bands of rubber hold in the way your car looks, handles and then some. Tires aren’t just meaty pieces of rubber molded into a circle- there’s a lot to it than that. Depending on its proposed utility, tires have carefully chosen rubber compounds that are engineered with a range of substances such as carbon powder and silicon and then heat-treated to give it the properties required. A lot of technology goes into that stuff you shred when you do a burnout.
TREAD
The tread pattern (squiggly lines that go around the tire) that you see on your tires isn’t some random design that the manufacturer conjured up just to make the tire look different from the rest. Yes, the pattern does serve an aesthetic element, but only insofar as functionality permits it to. One of the important functions that tread does via the channels built in
40 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
INDUSTRY FOCUS FEATURE
SEPTEMBER 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 41
them is to pump any water out of the contact patch (the part of the tire that is in contact with the tarmac at all times). The flexibility of the tread blocks, allows them to move and adapt to the road surface to find grip. Winter tires have lots of small and deep blocks of soft rubber with extra tiny grooves in the, so that they can even get some grip on ice. For some reason, most people in our parts don’t realize that there are different tires with differing tread compounds specific to the season that they are designed to be used in. winter tires don’t work well in summer because at speed the narrow tread blocks wobble and overheat leading to a loss of grip. Summer tires have wider tread blocks with a shallower tread depth. Track day tires on the other hand go one step further and have little “tread”- the ones we fondly know of as “Street slicks” and full non-road legal slicks have no tread at all.
SIDEWALLS AND STIFFNESS
The sidewalls have to be stiff enough to keep the tread section under control and the base layer under the tread layer needs to be strong enough to hold the tread securely and to resist punctures. They are reinforced with cords of steel or Kevlar. The precise weave effects how the tire deforms on the road and so effects handling.
42 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
Generally track tires are more supple but wear out faster and with only one or two plies are more prone to damage. In contrast, tires built for vans and trucks are harder with many more plies making them last longer and resist damage, albeit at the expense of ultimate grip. Stiffer or lower profile sidewalls give a quicker change of direction but cant follow rougher roads so easily and may skitter a bit, which is why race cars don’t use ultra low profile tires. A taller and more flexible sidewall is better on poor quality back roads, but it also introduces a small delay making it feel slow and vague.
UNDER PRESSURE
Changing the tire pressure can transform the car’s handling. Lower pressures allow for more flexibility, but too low and the tire looses control which is dangerous. Higher pressures hold the tire more rigidly, but too high and the car wont react well and the handling will become a bit wooden so to speak. The best grip level is somewhere in the middle and it varies depending on the intended use of the car; a little lower for a comfortable ride or a little higher for a race car that needs to handle corners.
AS WIDE AS YOU CAN GO
A wide wheel will hold a narrow tire very rigidly, which is great for flat, smooth racetracks, but stops the tire from adapting to rougher road surfaces. By contrast, a narrow wheel with a wide tire allows the tire to move side to side and curl up at the side when cornering hard, which can make the handling a bit sloppy. Narrow tires and excessively wide wheels may allow the bead to be pulled off the rim- which is a bad thing.

TIRE MARKINGS
EXPLAINED
Ever take a look at the side wall of a tire and wonder what all the combination of letters and numbers stand for? Well believe it or not those aren’t just random alpha-numericals, they contain valuable information as to what the tire is meant to do and whether or not it is right for your ride.
1 The Arrow: On directional tread tires, this arrow shows which way they should rotate.
2 235: The width of the tread, in millimeters. 3 45: The size of the sidewall, as a percentage of the tread width. A 235/45 tire has a 105.75mm sidewall. 4 Z: Only found on high performance tires, this letter means the tire can be used for prolonged sessions at over 240 KPH.
5 R: Radial ply tires. Almost all modern
tires are made this way, with a strong wire carcass supporting their shape and strands running across the tread.
6 18: The diameter of the wheel you can fit inside the tire- in this case would be an 18-inch rim.
7 95: This is the weight capacity of the tire according to the official load index table. 8 W: The speed rating of the tire, showing how fast you can drive on it for 10 minutes without it disintegrating. In this case, “W” means it can reach 270 kph. 9 Treadwear: This gives you a rough idea of how long the tire will last, from 60 (softest) to 600 (hardest). Although true tire wear actually depends on how heavy your right foot is.
10 Traction: Rated between AA (most traction) and C (least traction), this shows how well your tires will keep you stuck to the asphalt. 11 Temperature: How resistant the tire is to high temperature. If you’re out on the track a lot, you’ll need rubber, which can take loads of punishment. These are rated from A to C, with A being the most resistant to high temperatures. 12 DOT: The US Department of Transport code, the first four figures show what factory the tire was manufactured in. The second set, printed only on one side of the tire, shows the age. The first two numbers show the week and the second show the year. So a tire with 0612 would have been manufactured in the sixth week of 2012.
12
GETTING OLD
Believe it or not tires agethey don’t just “finish” as some around here like to put it; even if they’re in storage, the average shelf-life of your road tire is about two years-no more. The first visible signs of aging are cracks in the tread blocks, but they also deteriorate from the inside- so old tires and buying ones “second hand but in good condition” are to be avoided. The tread
rubber gets harder as it ages since the tire gets hot when it is in use (and lets not even talk about road temps in our weather) and this reverses the heat-treating process that was used to manufacture it in the first place.
component and its not just a case of crappy tires versus good ones- its about choosing the right type of tire for the kind of driving that you intend on doing.
DRIVING HOME
Your car’s tires are the only thing that connects it to the road surface. Everything that the engine, suspension and the chassis does collectively ends up at the contact patch of the tires for it to manage. First of all, thanks for stopping by at our stat of art Jaguar Land Rover showroom. Every year, at the MENA Marketing awards, Jaguar Land Rover dealers across the region are nominated into a category of awards; there are a total of eleven awards available and they cover many areas ranging from sales campaigns, tactical campaigns, PR, social media, events and so on. Last year we were triple award winners, and once again this year we were proud to be the recipients of three awards for Best Jaguar XF launch – that coincided with the launch of the new Euro Motors Jaguar Land Rover showroom, Best Land Rover Discovery Sport Launch, and Best Use of Social Media.
On those lines, tell us a little bit about the Discovery Sport Launch. What was special that made it stand out and awardworthy?
Everything was special about this event, first it was an amazing event at one of the most remarkable venues in the Kingdom – which is the Land Rover Experience Center at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC). We hosted it in February (2015), and it happened to be exactly a week after the launch of the Experience

Center itself. Second it was a dynamic launch, which saw the new Land Rover Discovery Sport drive down a steep hill into the view of the invitees, media and guests. It meant a lot to us as distributors of the prestigious marque, Land Rover, and to a lot of Discovery fans as well since the launch was the first of the re-imagined Discovery series in the Kingdom, third the attendance, I believe it was the most attended Discovery Sport launch in the region with more than ……. Media and invitees. That made it award-worthy.
What drives you as a lady? – let’s face it – these brands represent a lot of adrenalin, a lot of power and a lot of masculinity. Having said that, how do you stay on top of things consistently?
I totally agree that our brands represent a lot of adrenaline and power and although men are traditionally the main target market for these brands but we have seen over the last few years more ladies who are passionate about our brands. When it comes to my job, I’m a core and passionate marketer. Marketing is a lifestyle for me, something that perfectly complements my interests, and I have to be dynamic and hands-on with everything, personalizing my every touch in order to stand out. Organizing and managing my time is also an important aspect along with managing my team, in order to perform efficiently and effectively. As a lady, I am so proud to be marketing these amazing brands, and what drives me is delivering success year after year. As a team, our proactive ventures, the outstanding essence of our work, perseverance, a strict adherence to our philosophy that warrants Jaguar Land Rover Limited’s faith in us and our constant pursuit of excellence have helped us overcome every adversity and challenge that we have faced. We are driven by passion for the job and the products that we represent. The fundamental factor that also helps as a team is the working environment here at Euro Motors; we have a great leader, our Managing Director – Mr. Nawaf Al Zayani, a person who knows the car business comprehensively and who is passionate about cars. It is very easy when you’re being led by example. I also have to mention our General Manager – Mr. Paul Yates – who again is an avid car enthusiast and has been in the car business for a very long time, who provides us with a positive and nurturing work environment. Even though, starting off, I did not have a strong professional background in the automotive field, especiallyin its technical aspects, nevertheless we are marketers at our core and we believe that when you’re a core-marketer, you can market anything you are given.
Are you a car person?
I was always a car enthusiast – I love speed and off-roading very much and I always find time to indulge myself in those activities whenever I can. Though I share an enthusiasm for the thrill of the ride and the scintillating world of motor vehicles, I did not expect to be where I am today, right in the midst of working with two of the most prestigious brands in the global automotive
“I would never say that my job is difficult. As far as challenges go, we like to look at it this way – instead of competing with the rest of the market; we first like to compete with ourselves and better ourselves in the process.” industry but indoing so I’m enveloped in the best of both worlds by bringing together my passions, for cars as well as for marketing.
On that note – speaking of Jaguar and Land Rover, what would you say are the features or characteristics that distinguish Jaguar and Land Rover from other luxury car brands? The attention to details – not just in terms of their products, but also in terms of the customer’s journey when purchasing a Jaguar Land Rover product. When a customer buys a Jaguar Land Rover product, they don’t just buy a car, they’re buying into a whole new lifestyle, an elite lifestyle that can only be met by such a prestigious product.Jaguar Land Rover has some of the most eye-catching and unique designs and features on the market. Cars such as the Jaguar F-Pace, the Range Rover SV Autobiography and the Evoque convertible are just some examples of how uniqueand diverse these products really are. Each Jaguar Land Rover product is crafted to perfection.
Bahrain is a small market comparatively, and as such competition is even harder. Do you find that your job becomes increasingly difficult or challenging? At Euro Motors Jaguar Land Rover, we do not consider our job to be difficult. As far as challenges go, we like to look at it this way – instead of competing with the rest of the market; we first like to compete with ourselves and better ourselves in the process. Competing with others comes next – true that many competitors have great products, but if you were to look at any Land Rover product, you’ll see that they’re exceptional all-round. Not only do they perform flawlessly on-road, they’re indomitable off-road as well. In the current market, there aren’t many brands that can boast the same combination of attributes in their product lines. The same goes for Jaguar as well – the combination of remarkable style with performance and luxury that is perfectly harmonized for everyday use.
The transparency in our every transaction at Euro Motors Jaguar Land Rover, our proven reliability and our easy to do business with nature has taken us right to the top of the automotive industry in the Kingdom of Bahrain and consolidates our position with every endeavour.
In closing, tell us a little bit about the kind of strategies that you employ to stand-out and out-perform the rest of the MENA region, so much so that you are winning awards year after year?
In a very competitive market like the Kingdom of Bahrain, we always strive to anticipate our customer’s needs and exceed their expectations. At Euro Motors Jaguar Land Rover, we are digitally oriented and active on all fronts as we believe that in this technologically advanced era, where the all-encompassing influence of Social Media is second to none, to listen to our customers’ needs, reach out to them in an interactive manner, engage in a productive transaction and deliver products and services that serve as solutions to their requirements, we have to harness the inherent power in the digital world and make it our own. Secondly, we focused a lot on the experiential aspects of our products such as driving experiences. As soon as a prospective customer steps into a Jaguar Land Rover product, they are convinced that there is no alternative. We also conduct comprehensive surveys, based on which we implement strategies and plans that allow our customers to get exactly what they are looking for. Our policy is that customers are looked after throughout their ownership of a Jaguar Land Rover product. Last but not least, we always work with strict KPIs, the marketing team is working in harmony with the other departments to ensure we are delivering the maximum customers’ satisfaction and at the same time achieving the company’s targets and of course this is what makes us stand out as one of the best Jaguar Land Rover dealers in the MENA region. These awards reiterate our status as one of the best in the MENA region and we are thankful that our constant efforts are recognized. SEPTEMBER 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 45

But the big news about this big Benz is the powertrain; under the hood of the range-topping GLS 500 is a twin-turbocharged V8, pumping out 455 hp and is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. So not only is this bruiser fast, it’s pretty thrifty at the pump as well. The interior of the GLS is as opulent as an S-class, with leather adorning everything – including the dash and doors, as well as our personal favorite touch – open-pore wood grain finish. The COMMAND screen floats atop the dash and is controlled via an intuitive rotary knob or simply via the touch pad that sits above it. The front driver and passenger seats are infinitely adjustable and even offer various grades of massage options. On the road, this big SUV wraps around the driver and it’s easy to thread this car through narrow city streets or even manage parking owing to its 360-degree camera system. The ride is supple and if you want to get a bit aggressive, the drive select also allows you to choose from a sportier damper setting that adds a dash of extra handling from the chassis. Safety wise, the GLS comes with crosswind assist, collision-prevention assist, and brake assist and the exciting feature ‘Dynamic Select’ which lets the driver select different driving modes depending on relative terrains. PORSCHE CAYENNE GTS CONSUMER REVIEW
Hot Color, Hot Noises & Blistering Performance. This is the new Cayenne GTS
or an SUV in the traditional sense, performance is akin to the way it can ford water crossings or articulate its axles. Handling and straight line performance are mere afterthoughts. However, as is the case with all things Porsche, things are done a bit differently.
SEPTEMBER 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 51
Take the case of the Cayenne GTS – it is an SUV designed purely with dynamic on-road performance in mind. One can make all kinds of cases as to how the raised profile of an SUV is counter-productive to anything remotely performance related, but Porsche clearly seems to think differently. I am a die-hard SUV fan and I love the versatility that a traditional SUV offers in terms of 4WD capability and just toweringover-the-top-of-other-motorists seating position. The Cayenne GTS is, for all intents and purposes, none of that. So it was with a genuine bit of skepticism that I slid into the thickly bolstered driver’s seat of this Cayenne you see here.
How it’s like on the inside? Pretty overwhelming actually; although I am familiar with Porsche’s new interior scheme that’s spread evenly across it’s family, it’s still a bit of a visual overload as you struggle to take in the mass of switches and button layered one on top of another on the raked centre stack and dashboard. Key in on the left side and the engine comes to life in a hushed, but pronounced rumble. I did look around for the little button that opens up the exhaust flaps (similar to the Panamera GTS) but quickly learned that in the Cayenne, attack noise is only unleashed when you’re in full attack mode with the car in 52 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
Sport or Sport plus. The rest of the interior is pretty standard Porsche fare; the quality is just unbelievable (as you’d expect from a Porsche of course), and the color matched stitching throughout the dash and the seats lending an extra special aura to the whole cabin. The seats are proper buckets with extreme side-bolstering, to the point where getting in and out of the car takes some doing as the bottom-side bolsters brush up against your legs as you try to slide in. once you’re in though, it’s a snug fit and the seats do an excellent job of containing your mass when it comes to spirited cornering.
What is it like to drive? Quite pleasing at first really - you really do feel special sitting behind the wheel. The Cayenne feels light and easy to drive at all speeds. The suspension is biased toward firmness as opposed to outright ride comfort (although I suspect it’s more the doing of the low profile sport contact patches). There are adjustable damper modes, with the comfort setting really bringing about a change in the way the car handles bumps and those pesky rain grooves. Steering feel is plenty direct to the point it’s almost telepathic. In normal mode, the Cayenne is a comfortable, potter-around-town, luxury SUV. As is the case with nearly every newer Porsche that I’ve
tested, nestled within the realm of “Sport” and Sport Plus” mode is a completely different machine. The GTS comes equipped with a twinturbocharged V6 engine that puts out 440 BHP to all four tires. Coupled to an 8-speed tiptronic, the Cayenne GTS is good for a 0-100kph sprint time of 5.4 seconds. Not shabby for an SUV. Acceleration is pretty brisk, and you will be pushed pleasantly back into your seat if you stomp on it from a dead start. In sport mode, with the quad tailpipes wide open, the noise this car makes is pretty intoxicating, to the point where I began leaving it in sport mode and then jumping on the loud pedal every chance I got.
What about the looks? Well I love the blacked-out wheels and the extra intake scoops down low at the front. That and the butch, low stanced look really did its bit in getting me some admiring glances from members of the opposite sex. So top marks there. At the end of the day, the Cayenne grows on you – it is at home going about the daily grind as it is morphing into a loud, throaty hooligan capable of giving you thrills in a straight line at the track, highway or on a twisty bit of back road. Porsche’s definitely got their formula right and if it’s a track-DNA-infused, tarmac bruising SUV that you’re after, look no further.

ack in the day when I was a trainee reporter, they shoved me from one department to another, to gain expertise in every aspect of print production. One of my least favourite assignments was to work with the advertorial team, largely because it entailed writing thousands of words about things I had no interest in. From foodstuffs and consumables to hair-dryers and diapers.
SEPTEMBER 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 59
But later on, my most dreaded, yet favourite advertorials were the ones on chocolates and chocolatiers. It was a hate-love relationship. Why? Because there are only so many words in which you can describe the orgasmic taste of premium chocolates. I would actually look forward to the pleasure of tasting creamy goodness, but as soon as I finished, I’d have to pull out a dictionary to look for new words and ways to describe the mouthwatering taste. Gobbling it all up was never a problem, but penning out the pleasure was. You had to taste them to believe it, and there are no words that can substitute for experience. Fast forward a couple of decades later and I am now faced with the same dilemma albeit the product is waaay sweeter. No seriously, every time Ferrari launches a car, I get writer’s block, trying to choose expletives for exhilarating, amazing, magnanimous and the likes. My verdict is that it’s no use. The only true way to explain a Ferrari is by either putting you in the driving seat... or by voice recording my reviews while I’m driving. Funny part is, the picture will be pretty much identical to what you took before, because the camera can only capture the moment, but never the sensation. Right then, this car has been in the offering for some time now, and as you can see it was clearly created for the most hedonistic of Ferrari enthusiasts. Thats why it is affordable and outrageously beautiful to look at. It also means, that when the 3.9-litre twin turboed V8 is simply not enough, all you have to do is wait for the roof to somersault back into the trunk, for a taste of the 660bhp soundtrack.
SKIN DEEP
Mechanically this car is a twin to the GTB, however structurally it is quite different. That means its houses the retractable rooftop neatly, right over the engine and shuts shop in a mere 14secs. Unlike its competitor the Mclaren 650S Spider, which tucks everything away in a carbonfiber bin, the Fezza does it the old fashioned way. The Maranello think-tanks added structural reinforcements to pack the retractory components neatly over the engine. This apparently is the lighter alternative and only increased the car’s weight by 50kgs just as in the 458 Italia. Inside, the cockpit stays the same as the hardtop, albeit with a roof button in the central divider. It retains the start/stop button along with the massive central rev-counter and styling, although the infotainment

system seems to have had an upgrade. It works quicker, and is easier to navigate through, which means you spend less time trying to shift from phone to audio or route guidance and spend more time focused on the road. The seating positions are typically Ferrari with all-round vision as clear as a modern supercar should be. While top-down driving with the windows up may ruffle a few hair slightly, but its never enough to send your toupee or madame’s hair extensions flying off onto the highway. Put the window down and you’re ready for a Miami Vice sequel. This car has got what it takes to make you look good, even if you’re sharing some of Shrek’s DNA.
DRIVE TIME
Firing up the engine is always a ritual in every Ferrari. Your ears perk-up automatically to hear the first scream. It’s kind of like the engine took an ‘ice bucket” challenge. So are the turbos obvious? Hell yea! And they make the engine sound even juicier especially since you’re no longer cocooned inside the cabin. And if you have your earphones on for some reason you can still feel the V8 surge SEPTEMBER 2016 I www.arabiamotors.co 63
64 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
FERRARI 488 SPIDER COVER STORY forward rapidly, as the traction light blinks constantly preventing the rubbers from breaking loose. Ferrari tell us that they have fine tuned the shifts to match the tempo of the gears. So if you’re familiar with the coupe, you’ll notice that the Spider achieves rapid climax notes with each upshift as opposed to the continuous completion of the GTB. The objective here is to keep you excited and anticipated throughout the shift range. As if you were driving a traditional V8 and judging from the phonics it’s a job well done. Since the Spider is expected to spend most of its time on the road, the ride quality is a pleasure at any speed. The all new magnetorheological damping system upgraded with new piston rods and a quicker ECU offers increased suppleness and crisp responses no matter what the speed. Granted that the Mclaren 650S feels slightly stiffer, but Spiders are not the cars you really want to track around in. They have the capability to do so, but its more of a bonus than a prerequisite. Spiders I feel, are built to be driven fast and enjoyed around public roads and open highways. The purpose is open air motoring, and the last thing anybody wants to see is two people wearing helmets, driving top down! If you are one of those, I strongly suggest you wait for the track version Stradale or go for the GTB.
THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT
Fact is, the Spider was never intended to be a hair-raising, aggressive car, but more of a perfectly well rounded example of exotic sportiness, comfort and class. The chassis is superb, virtually immune to understeer at the front and pliant and pliable in all aspects. The steering rack is direct, light and communicative all the time. The way it can grip and un-grip on demand is phenomenally Ferrari... and is often called the soul that other rivals simply cannot emulate... at least so far. Six-sixty bhp has never felt this manageable. Yes you can feel every inch of the road you’re swallowing below. Yes you can
hammer it to redline and thrash it hard on the track. But where you most want to be with this car, are the winding curvy mountain roads in the South of France or Marbella. Top down, wind in your hair and the sound of the twin-turbochargers whistling away with the glorious V8, in between the valleys. And after two days of thoroughly enjoying the 488 Spider, I still feel like i can drive for another two without getting bored. You will never have a “now what?” moment in this car, because it sets the benchmark for any modern supercar in a traditionally Ferrari-esque way. There are other options in the market to consider, but non offer the formula perfected so well by the 488 Spider.

MUSTANG GT MODIZONE
he all new Mustang made waves across the Pony-carloving community when Ford decided to take a huge leap away in terms of the styling and design cues. But one drive is pretty much all it takes to convince even the most disheveled of enthusiasts to get back in the rhythm of things – especially if the aforementioned drive happens to be with the 5.0 Coyote under the hood. MUSTANG GT MODIZONE
The Mustang GT is perhaps one of the most iconic and easily recognizable cars on the road today (especially with all those internet memes floating around), so what’s special about this one? Well, for starters, it is one of the few GTs in the Kingdom that has the “California Special” badge attached to it in earnest by the factory. So what does this mean? A little bit of history on the “GT/CS” nameplate to get the ball rolling: In mid-February 1968, the California Ford Dealers (Ford Dealer Advertising Fund) began to market a factorybuilt, limited-edition Mustang, called the GT/ CS, or “California Special”. The hope was for a targeted production run of 5,000; however, only 4118 were made. On it, the Mustang GT/ CS features included: Marchal or Lucas Fog Lights, twist-type DZUS hood pins, side scoops, pop-open gas cap, rear spoiler decklid with end caps, and taillight panel with 1965 Thunderbird taillights (non sequential). Side stripes with the “GT/CS” die-cut logo, along with a rear decklid stripe were included. Fast forward to 2016, and available only as an add-on to the Mustang GT Premium trim package, the California Special adds 19inch, black-painted machined-aluminum wheels; hood and side stripes; a black pedestal spoiler out back; darkened taillight trim; and blackpainted mirrors and hood vents. There’s also a unique “gas cap” badge on the rear panel. Inside, the CS features black leather and microsuede upholstery with red contrast stitching, and the door-panel inserts, dashboard plaque, and strut-tower brace also get California Special branding. For a little history, The C/K was Chevrolet and GMC’s full-size pickup truck line from 1960 until 1998 in the United States, from 1965 to 1999 in Canada, from 1964 to 2001 in Brazil, and from 1975 to 1982 in Chile. The first Chevrolet pickup truck came out in 1924, though in-house designs did not appear until 1930. “C” indicated two-wheel drive and “K” indicated four-wheel drive. This here is the third generation of Chevy’s trucks. An all-new clean sheet redesign of General Motors’ Chevrolet and GMC brand C/K-Series pickups. Débuted in mid-1972 for the 1973 model year. The redesign was revolutionary in appearance at the time, particularly the cab, departing from typical American pickup truck designs of the era. Aside from being near twins, the Chevrolet and GMC pickups looked like nothing else on the road. The third-generation trucks are colloquially known as the “Square-body” generation. GM’s official “Rounded-Line” moniker highlighted the pickup’s rounded styling cues that were incorporated into the design. GM’s design engineers fashioned the “Rounded-line” exterior in an effort to help improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, using wind tunnel technology to help them sculpt the body. Other design traits include sleek sculpted bodywork, a aerodynamic cab with steep windshield rake, and a unique available hidden radio antenna embedded into the windshield glass. The Rounded-Line generation ultimately ran for a lengthy 15 model years (1973–1987) with the exception of the Crew Cab (four-door cab), Blazer, Jimmy, and Suburban versions, which continued up until the 1991 model year. GM ends this generation with 1987 as 1987 was the last model year for the conventional cabs (two-door cab).

DIG THIS ALTERNATE TO YOUR REGULAR SUPERBIKE
f there’s one thing that can be said for sure, there comes a time in pretty much every biker’s riding life where he or she begins to question the inherent madness of their machine – be it a chromed-out top-heavy cruiser, or a carbonfiber clad, feather-weight top-speed machine. Both of those bikes specialize in a particular method of moving man and machine, and sometimes, it’s necessary to find some middle ground. 74 www.arabiamotors.co I SEPTEMBER 2016
