Welcome Welcome to the 2017/18 issue of the Art & Design Licensing Source Book. The art licensing sector is blessed with an everburgeoning pool of creative talent, spanning just about every country around the globe. The articles and advertising in this issue give licensees and retailers a wide-lens view of the expert talent available to them, whether it’s for comfy cushions, great greeting cards, or heartwarming homewares. In this issue we preview a number of great exhibitions that offer an opportunity to get a first hand view of the artists, agencies, designers, photographers and everyone in-between. Key to this is Surtex in New York, the trusted place to be if you’re looking to get Above: The Art & Design LSB team at The Licensing Awards 2016, is also owned and organised by Max Publishing. your name out there. The show affords success; every single year which l to r: Michelle Board, Rob Willis, Jakki Brown, Ian Hyder, Samantha we read and hear stories of first-time exhibiting artists being Loveday, Jacqui Parr. uncovered, agencies picking up brilliant levels of new business, not to mention the opportunity student artists are offered via the designext competition. You just have to be there if you’re in the business of art and image licensing. Going West, Vegas plays host to Licensing Expo, the world's largest licensing exhibition which includes a solid section for the art world. As these two shows clash in dates this year, it can be viewed as an opportunity to get a lot of business done in one week, or a choice between East and West coasts. Either way, we know this is an industry where we look at everything in a positive colour. On the other side of the water, London sees Progressive Greetings Live (PG Live) in early June, which is dedicated to the world of greetings - a staple of business for artists and creatives, while we’ll be back to Olympia in October for Brand Licensing Europe. There’s just so many opportunities to get out there, we’ve previewed all of these great exhibitions in this issue. The Art LSB team will be at all of these shows, as will this magazine. Additionally, we’ve been fortunate to have some great conversations about what’s coming up this year. Our State of the Nation pages carry all the latest news from the art, design, and image licensing sectors. We’ve caught up with Cherish Flieder as she celebrates two years of ALS - ArtLicensingShow.com, and also been behind the scenes at Bright to hear more about its newest storybook collaboration with greeting card company The Art Group. Designers Guild kindly opened its doors to discuss its successes and growth-plans, while our feedback features also offer an insight by way of musings from licensees, and licensing agencies worldwide. We hope you enjoy reading this publication and thank you for making it so visually wonderful - the subject matter really is everything… The Art & Design LSB Team

Cover Story Maya Ish Shalom is an Israeli illustrator living in Brooklyn, NY. She derives inspiration from her surrounding environment, places she visits, and people she meets. Her work captures an emotional landscape ranging from sadness to happiness, sometimes conjuring a mix of both. She likes to tell stories through her illustrations, often jumping between paper and digital techniques. Her work includes projects and commissions for print and digital publishing, editorial, children's books, and animation. She has shown work in exhibitions across Israel and Europe and is currently illustrating her second children's book. On inspiration for the cover image, Maya said: “I drew this illustration last spring, when I was walking happily outside in the beautiful day and it was sunny and nice again, and I saw other people walking and smiling to themselves. It was really nice to feel I share this great mood with random strangers in the street.”

State Of The Nation: Corporate Happenings

Art Dealings New signings and collaborations make it a very exciting time to be involved in the world of art and design licensing. Here’s just a few of the recent happenings. V&A ramps up licensing programme To complement the V&A interior ranges, V&A Paint is now available for home decor. Available in 40 distinctive shades, the colour palette is inspired by the decorative schemes of the Museum. The paint is made of the highest quality pigment and already adorns the V&A’s magnificent grand entrance. Stationery and gifting continue to be areas of growth. Online customising specialist, Papier, launched a unique range of 100 luxury products including note cards, notebooks and wedding invitations available exclusively at papier.com. This year also saw the introduction of Museums and Galleries’ first set of luxury foiled cards and stationery. Above: Papier V&A The V&A is currently gearing up for stationery range the launch of a further 12 new licensees later in the year.

Above:Dominique’s dog-themed artwork will feature in calendars in 2018.

First partner for Dominique Vari This is Iris has had a great start to the licensing programme for new artist Dominique Vari after appointing partners Carousel Calendars as the first licensee. The dog-themed typographical range of 2018 calendars and diaries will be throughout the UK and Europe and will showcase Dominique’s detailed work throughout each page. “It is always key for us to partner with an established calendar publisher such as Carousel Calendars,” said Sarah Lawrence from This is Iris. “They work very closely with artists and designers to create fantastic products and we are excited to see what their team come up with for this detailed collection.”

Around the world with Pure Illustration

Above: Gillian Flint’s artwork for the CBeebies Radio programme, Waterways.

Radio inspires artwork Robert Rigby, author and dramatist across television, theatre and radio has a new project for CBeebies Radio. Waterways is ten stories exploring the importance and wonder of water. The series was commissioned through the Robert Rigby Partnership, which in turn commissioned original illustrations for each programme from artist Gillian Flint, represented by art licensing agency The Bright Group. Author Robert Rigby commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed creating and producing Waterways for CBeebies Radio. As soon as I saw examples of Gill’s work I was convinced her art and ideas would be exactly right for my scripts and the series. And I was correct, the illustrations work brilliantly.”

Pure Illustration has been licensing artwork for greetings cards and other gift products for the last 10 years. The recent re-development of its website, blog and social media has resulted in some great new talent joining the creative team as well as some new relationships with art buyers all over the world. Pure Illustration's artists’ work can now be found on tea packaging in Germany, biscuit tins in the UK, placemats in Australia and New Zealand and on charity fundraising packs in the USA. A particular highlight for the licensing team was the commission of Tony Parsons to create the Christmas cover of the BBC Countryfile magazine at the end of last year. New cushions for Tate

Textile art Stitch Gallery One launched in autumn 2016 and works with artists from around the world to bring unique machine embroidery designs to the home crafter. Licensing from select artists, each with a unique specialty gives Stitch Gallery One access to a steady flow of fantastic work and the ability to offer a diversified portfolio of embroidery designs to its growing community of crafters. Stitch Gallery One’s talent line-up of 14 artists includes Suzan Lind who leads on product development as well as nine other co-exhibitors Suzan met while exhibiting at Surtex over the years. Other artists include Howard Robinson, with his wellloved Selfies turned into “Pocket Selfies” animals making funny faces customers can sew on top of a pocket. Below: Howard Robinson’s Selfies turned into embroidery Pocket Selfies.

Inset Victor Pasmore cushions

Two new collaborations with Tate Enterprises and We Love Cushions sees prints from the Victor Pasmore collection and artwork and graphics on the Russian Revolution from the David King Collection now available as cushions. There are 12 items in each initial collection. The release of the David King cushions corresponds with a key exhibition being held at Tate Modern – Red Star Over Russia – which will run from November 8 to February 18, 2018. The new Tate lines join the likes of Pets Rock, Bowie by Iconic Images, British Library, Imperial War Museum, National Gallery and the RHS in We Love Cushions’ portfolio.

New signing for MGL MGL has signed new artist Laura Thompson. Laura’s work is heavily influenced by nature, inspiring her to create stylish motifs, both using hand painted watercolour and digitally derived designs. With an educational background in surface pattern design, Laura’s work is well suited to fashion, homeware, stationery and gift trends. Right: New pattern from Laura Thompson.

Success with cats and dogs Young talent for Painted Planet Massachusetts-native Emily Cromwell is the most recent addition to Painted Planet's family of artists. Having recently graduated with a BA in Studio Art and an emphasis in Illustration, she eagerly dove headfirst into her art career. In addition to licensing, Emily's bright and happy designs have found success in children's books, freelance illustration and hand-lettering. Her artwork is available for a wide variety of categories including fabric, greeting cards, calendars, stationery, paper products, children's products, apparel and more. Left: One of Emily Cromwell’s seasonal designs.

With her unique art style and clever messages, Amylee Weeks (represented by MHS Licensing) is enjoying a very strong launch of products featuring artwork from her popular dog and cat collections across a wide spectrum of categories. Calypso Cards, a Providence, Rhode Island company, publishes and distributes contemporary greeting cards and related gift products, recently developed a series of 12 cat and dog cards featuring Amylee’s pet designs, which are now available at specialty retailers in the US and Canada. Park Designs, a top home and kitchen textile manufacturer based in North Carolina has created eight adorable dishtowels also featuring Amylee’s whimsical dog and cat collections. “It is exciting to see the momentum Amylee’s licensees are experiencing as her presence in the marketplace continues to grow, with retailers asking for her product by name. That kind of recognition is a testament to how her artistic style and collaborative product development skills reward her licensee partners with sales,” says Marty Segelbaum, president of MHS Licensing, her representative. State Of The Nation: Photography & Image Art

Picture Stories The world of photographic licensing has really opened up recently and covers the entire spectrum, from extreme macro to animal selfies – and everything in-between! Up close and personal Rinekwall gets up close and personal with stimulants, pain relievers, and antioxidants. The Microcrystal Collection, a collaboration with renowned scientist and artist Lee Hendrickson, brings caffeine, citric acid, sweetener, medication, and cabernet sauvignon under the microscope. Years of scientific research did not keep Hendrickson in the lab. Instead it liberated him. He and his beloved petri dishes and laboratory coat found their way into the art world. There he discovered a new frontier. Hendrickson, always the scientist, is now a celebrated artist as well. His photographs of household items in crystalized form have won awards and are placed in many influential galleries and collections. Rinekwall takes Hendrickson’s art in a new direction, creating endlessly repeating designs that can be translated onto any substrate, product, or architectural element. Right: Beautiful patterns form under the microscope

I love ewe One of the trending images at Ardea Picture Library is its heart shaped ewe which has been very popular for greetings cards and merchandise. The original image was a heart shaped sheep with pink wool, but due to its popularity, the image is now available in a whole series of seasonal variations including Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.“It’s hard to tell exactly why some images are successful, but something which is a little bit quirky or different always tends to sell well as it stands out both to clients and customers,” says Paul Brown, managing director at Ardea Picture Library.“Add to that the positive messaging of the heart, love and a potential jokey caption such ‘I love ewe’ and you have a winner.” Above: There’s a heart-shaped sheep for every occasion!

Going local Photographer Assaf Frank is well known in the licensing industry for his striking high quality photographic images for use on prints and products, such as napkins, jigsaws, greetings and calendars. He works closely with manufacturers and publishers to create exclusive seasonal collections and has work his taken him all over the world. But most recently he has been exploring his home country of the UK. “Over the past year I have found there is a growing trend for regional photographs. Although London, Paris, New York and Venice will always sell well, consumers are looking for images they can relate to from their local area or from a holiday destination. I am increasingly asked to visit locations around the UK. Since Brexit, the British tourist industry seems to be booming meaning there is an increase in demand for beautiful images from across the country. I recently visited North Wales to photograph Llandudno and Conwy castle. This area of the country is wonderful for photography with stunning coastlines and the Snowdonia National Park."

Fancy that?! Mary Evans Picture Library has recently added a selection of stunning illustrations taken from original 1920s fancy dress catalogues published by Weldon’s and Leach’s. The dazzling, and often topical designs, are typical of the whimsical taste for fancy dress costume during the decade and range from more traditional suggestions such as clowns and witches to those verging on the surreal. The catalogue covers are particularly striking and, together with the interior pages of endless costume ideas, are a quirky vintage choice for stationery such as greeting cards and invitations, or party-themed giftware. Above: Fancy dress in the 1920s was dazzling and colourful

Animal Selfies in the Licensing Awards Howard Robinson’s Selfies is a finalist in the LIMA International Licensing Awards, with the winners announced at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas at the end of May. Howard’s Selfies range is a collection of adorable images of the animal kingdom enthusiastically joining into the worldwide craze for taking selfies. There are now 34 licensing partners across the UK, USA, Canada, Russia, Poland, France, New Zealand, Turkey and Denmark producing over 600 Selfies items for across 86 product categories. But no matter the application, this artwork is in hot demand for a range of consumer product including stationery, apparel, bedding, homewares, accessories and more. Bright artist designs new sausage branding Artist Clover Robin, represented by Fiona Kenny at Bright Art Licensing, has designed new branding and packaging for MOR – the new healthier sausage brand from Walkers Sausage Co. The subtle smile in the bold logo type adds a touch of warmth and personality. The bespoke illustrations by Clover Robin reflect the ingredients in each variety, in a hand drawn style that adds a craft feel to remind shoppers that these sausages are still made by hand, by sausage makers, using natural casings in the traditional way. Clover’s agent Fiona Kenny commented:“It was a delight partnering with Ape Creative and working with a company that so clearly valued Clover’s input and interpretation as an illustrator.

Success for Catalina Estrada Wentworth Wooden Puzzles is the latest partner to join the Catalina Estrada UK programme, with a series of designs to launch later this year. “We are so excited to share Catalina’s work with partners across the UK,” says Michelle Chappell, licensing executive for This is Iris representing Catalina Estrada. “Finding the right licensing partners for this wonderful property is key. This versatile collection works across so many products, with many already signed by Catalina’s agent Edebe across Spain, Portugal and the US markets. We are thrilled to have Wentworth join the programme and look forward to seeing the first set of products for this new collection”. This is Iris has secured a lucrative deal with European partners Setino who will be producing over 60 different lines across apparel, bedding, homewares, accessories and stationery again bolstering the already successful EU programme. The range will initially launch in Europe this summer with This is Iris currently in talks with partners to bring this into the UK.

The artworks themselves took about a month to create so it was an efficiently executed project all round! We’re excited for the brand to grow and to see what they come up with next in their range.”

“Strange to think, but at that time I started my shop on the Kings Road there was really no concept of ‘lifestyle’ as we know it today,” Tricia Guild, OBE the founder of Designers Guild and doyenne of pattern and colour told LSB. “I had this idea to present a lifestyle that could offer a sense of informality with a contemporary yet decorative look - I always think it is so much easier when people can see the evidence of how something works visually by touching and feeling the products.” LSB rejoices in how the visual and tactile touch for this world leading design brand continues to grow, with licensing playing an increasing role.

It has stood the test of time by constantly moving forward. Collection after collection, the colour work and patterning is amazing. Our first range is based on the current collections, but we can’t wait to go back into the archives which really do chronicle the trends of the day, in many ways these trends were in fact set by Designers Guild. Designers Guild’s breadth of style as well as the immaculate finishes on the wallpapers really lends themselves to greeting cards.” Above: The Art Group’s Designer Guild greeting card inaugural range of 24 designs is a mix of contemporary f lorals and pattern. IN FOCUS: Designers Guild

Pioneering words Tricia Guild, OBE, the founder and creative director of Designers Guild started something very special back in 1970, but what is even more special is how the brand, which began as a few products has gone on to make such an impact on our aesthetic appreciation. Providing inspiration to everyone who has a dream, Tricia tells her story: “I began with just a few items that I put together. It was a small business with a small amount of money, but so rewarding when I found that it seemed to work for people and I realised that I had found my passion and drive. I then started researching textiles to use in my shop and for projects I was working on, but felt so frustrated at the lack of designs that I felt inspired by. This led me to designing the first collection, which was a set of Indian block prints, and I have continued from that point to where we are today.” The company’s international expansion did not really take off

Bloom and CPLG’s brand division) continues to blossom big time, with carefully curated licensees who all share the brand’s ethos. Blueprint Collection’s Designers

until 16 years later when Tricia’s brother Simon Jeffreys joined the company. “This enabled the business to progress further and today we have grown into an international, luxury lifestyle brand – available in over 50 markets worldwide, producing everything for the home – from fabric, wallpaper and paint, to furniture and home accessories. But although we have grown in size, the vision remains the same – to create beautiful products that are innovative and of the utmost quality,” assures Tricia. While forever steadfast in steering the creative direction of the business, Tricia is also very supportive of the licensing activity and sees this as amplifying the brand’s presence in people’s lives. “Our customers are thrilled that our business is expanding into many avenues and that our products are even more accessible to have in the home. Our lifestyle designs enable us to work across many platforms and we love to work with new licenses, and we are always looking to broaden our licensing range,” she says, adding, “We are always keen to develop our licensing business and are working on new ideas as we speak!”

Guild gift stationery range was awarded the accolade of Best Brand Licensed Gifting Product or Range in the prestigious industry Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards last month, while respected card publisher The Art Group hails the launch of its inaugural Designers Guild greeting card range at Spring Fair as one of the most successful in the company’s history. shops. While Deva Designs, who rejoins the licensing portfolio is also reaping benefits from the more active licensing programme, which now also includes kitchen accessories from Ulster Weavers, bedding from Bedeck and fashion accessories from Quintessential. “Designers Guild is such an inspiring company to work with, with this inspiration hailing from Tricia at the top and percolating through to everyone involved, including our licensees,” commented Libby Grant, at We Are Bloom. “Through licensing the Designers Guild brand is now prominent in many more retailers from leading independents to department stores. And we have lots of plans for the future, including a window display in John Lewis this summer.” Art&Design Licensing Source Book 25

Marketing the Muse Art agencies hold a pivotal role in the licensing industry, showcasing the work of the artists on their books to as broad and hungry an audience as possible – but it doesn’t stop there. These days agencies are really pushing boundaries to promote their next big creative visionary and inspire licensees to help take that work from the easel to the shop f loor. Art & Design LSB spoke to some well-known names to find out more…

Richard Patey, owner of Pure Illustration, a UKbased illustration agency that represents more than 60 artists and illustrators and has been licensing artwork to the UK market for the past 11 years. “Diversity has always been important for us at Pure Illustration – after all different artistic genres appeal to many different demographics for many different reasons. For that reason we don’t have one particular genre that is selling better than others or that we predict will be a trend over the coming year. That said though we do feel that graphic, computer-generated work is losing some of its appeal amongst a

younger generation who are looking for more authenticity in the art and illustration that they buy into. The trends might be graphic but customers want to see them rendered by hand. We’ve been in this business now for 11 years, and although we’ve seen a positive upturn in licensing to our UK publishers in the past six months or so we feel that the market for freelance art is yet to recover. The growth of in-house design teams and the economics of dealing with big retailers means that many of our UK customers do not have the freedom to source artwork 'off-site' that they once did. As a result we concentrate our efforts on our business relationships outside of the UK and work with a select group of British publishers who value the diversity of freelance artists’ portfolios as well as the creativity of their unrestricted design process. We have a portfolio of more than 13,000 images created by a group of over 50 different artists and illustrators. We license new work on a regular basis but occasionally we have interest in pieces of artwork which are quite a few years older. Currently we are seeing more interest

in loose watercolour work, nativity Christmas with lots of textures and patterns, Nordic colour shades and whimsical characters. In terms of product areas that are growing, greeting card sales in the UK are still climbing and that industry seems to be in a great place right now. At Pure Illustration we specialise in designs that can work for cards, gift bags and wrap, but we also license to paper wear, ceramics and packaging companies who want contemporary designs that are both well thought out and proven sellers in other product areas. We are certainly seeing a growth in the paper napkin business as well as the paper crafting market.” Below: Work by artist Deva Evans who creates five or six new pieces weekly.

Joanne Olds, president of The Buffalo Works, a USbased global licensing agency that represents a diverse range of art brands and artists and which has recently signed Scottish artist Steven Brown. “Late last year we were very excited to be named Steven Brown’s global licensing agent. The American market generally has been good to us over the past year, but then we’ve had some popular brands and artists. One growing trend we’re seeing is that licensees are needing Right: Buffalo Works' brand partner Kathy Ireland holds one of the first paintings for her new line of wall decor.

It’s certainly getting more expensive to be an agent – you need many more staff these days! Wall decoration is a product area that’s continuing to grow and home accents also has strong legs in the art market as well. Big news for us at Buffalo Works is the announcement that we are now a brand partner with multi-billion dollar home brand Kathy Ireland and are creating a line of wall décor for her.” Art&Design Licensing Source Book 29

Marty Segelbaum, president of Minneapolis-based MHS Licensing, has been working in the licensing industry since 1988 and has a huge range of art brands on his books. “At MHS we believe we’re seeing a direct retail response to the current polarised state of the country in America when it comes to art licensing. Sentiment continues to be a strong category, especially in terms of empowering messaging about believing in yourself, being strong, staying positive - or a light-hearted snarky quote that provides a good

chuckle! People like to visually be reminded that all in this world is not negative, whether that’s in the form of an encouraging quote on a journal, a wall plaque or a T-shirt. Business so far for us in 2017 has been steady and there is a continual demand for fresh ideas from the licensees and potential licensees which tells us that there is great opportunity out there. Farm-to-table, organic and home-grown imagery is a strong trend right now across paper and gift categories, while many retailers are also trying to attract and appeal to millennials and are asking their retail sources for art and products that do just that. Imagery that is simple and modern seems to fulfil that need. Looking forward to the coming year, we’ve been seeing an increased interest in designs featuring a mixture of art styles and techniques, such as a watercolour floral combined with bold graphic elements. This is helping to keep the market fresh and creates a new realm of fun and unique designs for manufacturers that can translate onto a wide variety of products. We’ve also noticed the presence of more black and white designs featuring a pop of colour – more than likely a lingering effect of the recent adult colouring craze.”

Licensing Tales

The Art of the Deal When it comes to a keen eye for images that inspire and products that will sell, clever licensees are the creative geniuses you want on your team. Art & Design LSB spoke to several industry high f lyers about the latest hot trends and inspiration that’s both far-f lung and close to home… Dan Graham, editorial director of Top That Publishing says being a father of eight really helps when it comes to being in the business of entertaining children’s books. “It might sound clichéd, but a lot of my personal inspiration comes from my kids. As a dad of eight with ages ranging from three to 18, I have my very own testing panel at home! At the upper end there’s an endless source of critique and at the lower end boundless enthusiasm and energy – both of which I put to good use when vetting prospective art styles and brands. “Working in children’s book

publishing I always look outside of my industry too. Emerging art styles can often be discovered in the world of gifts, stationery and fast moving consumer goods long before they make it into the world of books. “In terms of growing trends that we’re seeing across licensed art and design, big eyes and even bigger character heads are everywhere you look at the moment! Hasbro did a great job with the Littlest Pet Shop characters a few years back, and this type of stylised character treatment is going from strength to strength – most notably with the animated series Shimmer and Shine. The rise and rise of vector art also shows no signs of slowing down – although this is alongside a resurgence in traditional works of art for licensing too.

“I think there is also going to be increasing demand for hand-drawn and painted art to counter computer-generated works in the year to come. The success of the tongue-in-cheek Ladybird books and recent reprints of classic children’s books, including the original art, are testament to this idea. “Without doubt our early learning through art brand, Arty Mouse is our biggest success story of the year. Following international publishing success in 2015/16 we launched Arty Mouse licensing at last year’s Brand Licensing Europe and already have licensees for educational software, iOS and Android apps, school workbooks and stationery, personalised gifts and books. Edutainment Licensing represent Arty Mouse licensing and will be at the Vegas Licensing Expo at the inaugural licensing show in Japan too. I’m very excited about what the future holds for our whiskery little creative!”

Toni Renom, export manager at Busquets, a Spanish brand based near Barcelona and specialising in gifts, stationery, educational and graphic arts products. “The Spanish market is very fast moving, so art brands and licenses don’t necessarily have as long a life here as they do in other countries.

Emily Kleinman, art director at independent publisher Mudpuppy, loves nothing more than a little retail therapy when in pursuit of her next deal. “This year it’s been fantastic to see girl empowerment popping up everywhere – books and products featuring amazing women from throughout history and today, and all encouraging girls to pursue their dreams. I find it a truly wonderful trend

Interestingly I’d also say that we don’t celebrate strong characters from the past in quite the same way as other nations, except maybe Disney or Marvel ones that are targeted at children. “What we are seeing here is fashion companies bringing more and more of their own products to distribution, as well as special interest in concepts like Star Wars and football teams. Generally the licensing market does seem to be picking up. “Our ‘Flamenco’ brand has been a big hit so far and we’re particularly happy with the lovely ‘Be Cool’ bags from the range. When it comes to our own brand, Busquets designs are still strong with our target market who are always looking for something cute and unique. “We attend international trade fairs related to licensing and branding, as

and hope to see it persist as an ‘evergreen theme.’ Additionally we’re also seeing a marketplace desire for products that encourage unplugged family time, such as classic board games and challenging puzzles for adults and children to enjoy together. And the final trend we’ve been seeing across art and design this year is unicorns. “At Mudpuppy we’re really excited to release our new geography puzzles, which I worked with artist Sol Linero to create. She brought her fresh and modern take to this educational project and the puzzles include pieces shaped like American States and European countries. “In terms of where I personally draw inspiration from when looking for the next licensing deal, besides

well as those dedicated to franchising, and all are good for drawing inspiration for the next licensing deal. Our art department also travels all around the world looking for new trends, and additionally social media plays an important part in what we do.” Right: Busquets' fun 'Flamenco' brand utilises a selection of arty prints across a range of stationery, school and gift products.

trade shows and daily internet and social media research, I spend a good amount of time in book, toy, and gift shops to see what retailers are stocking and featuring. I especially love to do this while travelling to see what's happening in different markets. I recently returned from Amsterdam and enjoyed taking in all the inspiring art and design happening over there!” Below: Mudpuppy’s clever new geography puzzles which feature the US States as well as European countries.

What's In Store: PG Live 2017

Taking place in London in early June (Tuesday 6 – Wednesday 7) PG Live is the world's leading greeting card trade show. The buzzy, exciting show is also a hotbed of art licensing activity, so A&D LSB spoke to a selection of the up-andcoming artists and illustrators who will be leading the creative charge.

The Card Creatives Watercolour Work Contemporary British designer Liz Temperley is the creative force behind Blank Inside Design, and will be making her PG Live debut in 2017. Liz hopes to add to a client base that already includes Liberty, Selfridges, Anthropologie and Paperchase as well as a number of independents. “My work has a clean aesthetic and I combine my beautiful, vibrant, colourful watercolour illustrations with witty captions,” explained Liz.“It's a unique

offering which ensures my cards stand out from the crowd.” Liz is showing her new range of Zodiac greeting cards at PG Live, while also launching a range of 100% eco-friendly charity greetings cards which have been designed in collaboration with The Bumblebee Conservation Trust After working with Selfridges last year, licensing is very much on Liz's agenda.“Licensing is definitely an area I am looking to explore,” she said.“It feels like a natural progression for me and I'm looking forward to exploring the possibilities.”

Detailed Design Bringing the creative and artistic talents of the global greeting card industry together under one roof, PG Live 2017 is the UK's leading launchpad for thousands of original designs and fantastic new collections. Also showing at PG Live for the first time is Galina Pagliaro, the driving force behind Kapelki Art. Galina's designs are based on the art of her grandfather, Russian artist and illustrator Yuri Vasnetsov (1900-1973). “I am in love with his art, the pretty details and drops (‘kapelki’) that make each image so beautiful and memorable,” said Galina, who works with

“I soon found that my illustrations translated well into greeting cards,” said Lianne.“Each design is intricately collaged by hand with lots of detail and curious-eyed characters, inspired by my love of nature and animals.” Paperwhale Greeting Cards have been received well at retail, and are now stocked in many gift shops, galleries and bookshops throughout the UK. The full collection will be on show at PG Live, along with new ranges Artist Prints and a brand new Botanics collection. “PG Live is my first trade show,” Lianne continued, “and I’m really excited. As an illustrator, I’m familiar with licensing, and I’m definitely open to any opportunities that arise. I’m hoping PG Live will be a stride in a positive direction, the next step up in my career!”

“It'll be great to be at a show focused on greetings cards,” she said.“Ideally I'd love to secure some licensing deals, and to meet some agents too!”

Hand Drawn Ex-primary school teacher Sarah Thompson has loved to draw since she was little, and not much has changed. Trading as Sarah Lovell Art, Sarah now has more than 70 designs in her portfolio, which can be found in a number of independent shops and on Etsy. “I think the reason people like my cards is because they are a little different,” said Sarah, “a bit magical. I like to think they are cards which the recipient would want to keep and put on the wall. All of my designs are handdrawn and hand-painted and customers like that.” Sarah believes that PG Live will be an important stepping stone and has been painting solidly to finish each new range. last two years she has been focused on the intricate paper sculptures which form the basis of her designs. “I sculpt just about anything out of paper, from tiny 5mm puppies to girls drinking cocktails,” Suna said.“My product is a specialised handmade art which requires hours of precision skills in cutting, understanding of materials and colour arrangement.” Seven new ranges will be launched at PG Live, each using paper in a unique way; including the on-trend urban lifestyle range ‘Hip' and the elegant wildlife range 'Paper wild'. “As a new company in an industry that has lots of amazing talent, I am hoping to develop relationships with retailers,” said Suna,“and after 12 months of hard work I’m excited

for the ranges to be seen by the most important people in the industry!”

A Natural Touch Inspired by the great outdoors and the best the British countryside has to offer, Jo Clarke's fine art and watercolour paintings will be making their PG Live debut under the brand name of Toasted Crumpet. “We understand the strength of animal imagery across the sector and our contemporary designs produce an eye-catching look,” explained Jo, who broke away from a city career to start the business. The show will see Toasted Crumpet launching three new everyday greetings card collections, as well as a new range of ten countryside-inspired gift-wraps. “As relative ‘newbies’ into the greetings card business PG Live provides a fantastic opportunity for us to get to meet key people across the industry,” said Jo.“We also believe that licensing is an important way for us to explore new products and reach new markets, territories and customers – it represents a very exciting and an integral part of our long-term plans.”

Photo Finish As a professional photographer, Holly Auchincloss made the move from weddings to wildlife and hasn't looked back since! “I'd say around 50% of my cards are based on wildlife,” said Holly, who trades under the Wildcards name,“with other ranges showing landscapes and other general scenes. The animals depicted in my cards are always popular but few photographers have the opportunity to capture them, so the images on Wildcards ‘African’ ranges are quite unique.” PG Live will see the launch of the Wildcards brand into the market and the entire collection will be on show, including four ranges of African images as well as ranges of florals and landscapes from Britain and around the world. “I hope to make Wildcards the ‘go to’ name for photographic imagery,” said Holly,“and am interested in exploring all avenues to growing the business! It's very exciting!” Art&Design Licensing Source Book 49

Bright’s Card Collective here are some significant cornerstones which come together to form the core of the art licensing industry; areas where clever design and artful illustrations are allowed to shine and make a real impact within consumers’ lives. Greeting cards and children’s book illustrations are two of these, both effortlessly introducing beautiful imagery into the everyday. The collaboration between Bright Art Licensing, (a division of The Bright

Group) and The Art Group takes its inspiration from illustrations by Bright’s artists within the children’s picture book market. The resulting range of greeting cards – The Bright Collective – uses illustrations taken directly from a number of much-loved picture books, with some clever wording and sentiment added to help the art work commercially in a different medium. Hannah points out that the card market is significant to Bright’s art licensing business in general, saying

The latest project from Bright Art Licensing is a storybook-based collaboration with creative greeting card company The Art Group. A&D LSB spoke to senior licensing agent Hannah Curtis to find out the full story. that; “Greetings cards are probably our main area of business. They are a huge part of the art licensing industry, and designing a greeting card is a lovely way to earn a living! Our artists really enjoy the scope of potential ranges and range extensions.” Greeting card commissions are often popular with artists who generally work in publishing, where they might be contracted to create books which will keep them busy for several years. In that situation, creating a range of cards is a comparatively, small, quick project! The idea for The Bright Collective came from a series of conversations between Hannah and Reggie Pugh, creative director of The Art Group. “For many years Reggie and I had discussed the work of our picture book artists – we would look over their books at trade shows and dream Left: Grandad’s Island by Benji Davies.

about how we could showcase these beautiful stories in the greetings and stationery industries.” After many of these discussions – in what the pair referred to as ‘storytime’ sessions – they decided which books would be the most suited to the new project. “We knew we wanted to target book stores and small gift shops,” explained Hannah, “and with recognisable characters such as David Litchfield’s The Bear and the Piano we knew there would be interest from children and parents who love these best-selling books. Shortlisting which artists, books and illustrations to launch the range with took many hours. “We wanted the artwork to be beautiful, artistic and quirky but also commercial enough to attract the consumer,” said Hannah. “We looked at the sales history of all the books shortlisted as well as their accolades – it’s no coincidence that the artists chosen are all award-winning, best-selling author illustrators with a huge presence within the publishing industry and a firm place in the home of many young families.” The cards themselves have been designed using spreads taken directly from the books, some cropped and with captions added. The artists themselves were involved at every

stage to make sure they provided their own handwriting and were happy with the end result. “It was very important for us that the artworks could bridge the gap from books to cards,” said Hannah.“As much as we wanted the consumer to recognise the characters from these best-selling books we also want them to stand alone as greeting cards, ensuring they are not too niche and can target the widest audience possible. We currently sell limited edition prints from these books in our gallery-cumbookshop The Bright Emporium

and are looking to partner with licensees for various children’s products.” Launched at Spring Fair in early 2017, the range has been well-received so far, with wonderful feedback from both the industry and consumers.“Selling the cards alongside the books and prints in our Emporium space means we can gauge consumers’ interest and monitor which designs are the most popular,” explained Hannah.“The cards have been placed at a number of different retailers, which has

really helped to strengthen the reach of our illustrators in their own right.” Unsurprisingly, there are already plans in place for extending The Bright Collective, adding other Bright illustrators and their versatile artworks.“The loveliest thing about this project,” Hannah concluded, “is that we can just keep adding to the range. We are continually looking at new and existing titles from our author illustrators, and we have some ideas in the pipeline for a range extension from the four initial artists as well as from some of our new up-andcoming names.” With so many talented artists on their books and exciting new names joining all the time, it’s clear that Bright Art Licensing and The Art Group have got plenty of ‘storytime’ sessions ahead of them!

CARD CREATION “For as long as I can remember (even though my children are now adults!) I have collected beautiful children’s books. In The Art Group studio when we’re looking at the creation of cards and selecting new artworks, we are always drawn to the character development and skills of many of the Bright artists and their book designs. After much discussion - and a few tears when reading ‘Grandad’s island’ - we made a final selection of illustrations from four of their awardwinning artists to go to launch with. We hope it gives retailers a new range of cards with a great mix of beautiful artworks and fun characters. We hope this joint project will help to build awareness for both the illustrators and their books and give fans (both parents and children) an opportunity to send a card with their favourite characters. Our aim is to continue to expand the range with even more of the best, new and award-winning talent that the Bright Agency have published.” Reggie Pugh, Creative director, The Art Group Art&Design Licensing Source Book 51

Danielle Noaks “I enjoy working in a wide variety of techniques and developing new handwriting styles. My favourite illustrations are created using inks and watercolour, combining lovely line work with splashes of colour.”

With a wide and varied roster of talented and creative people on its books, there’s nothing that Bright Art Licensing values more than its artists. Lily Rossiter “I have a playful approach to illustration and surface design, with a love for colour, mark making and scraps of card. My favourite image has to be the ‘Penguins’ as they’re quirky and fun, especially the baby!”

Suzanne Washington “A couple of book jacket illustrations for collections of children’s classic fairy tale stories. The subject matter of animals and nature with a hint of magic drawn in a detailed line work style is exactly my handwriting!”

State Of The Art ight years ago the seed of an idea planted itself in artist Cheryl Flieder’s mind – and refused to budge. Six years later following crowdfunding, word-of-mouth marketing and much blood, sweat and tears, the first green shoots of new artistic online community ArtLicensingShow.com began to emerge and now, two years further down the virtual track, even Cheryl can’t believe what a marvellous monster she has, quite literally, helped to create. What started as something that was intended to spark conversation and collaboration between professional artists and designers of all description has now grown into a truly innovative international online trade show for the art licensing industry. A safe and protected place for artists to showcase their work online which can be freely

and easily accessed by licensees looking for genius creative minds to work with and visual inspiration for their latest range of products. This is quite simply an online business model that brings people throughout the dynamic art licensing industry closer together and, most importantly, leads to licensing deals. Two years on from when ALSC was officially launched, in March 2015, and the stats are impressive. To date around 30,000 pieces of artwork available for licensing have been uploaded by around 300 artists, while in the region of a thousand art licensing businesses have registered for free in the

American artist and design Cherish Flieder is ‘passionate’ about art licensing and has been active in the industry for the past decade. But when she launched an online venture aimed at not only making it easier for both artists and licensees to operate in this competitive marketplace and also to create a thriving community of creative minds, little did she know how fast it would grow. A&D spoke to her to find out more… online community directory. Leading companies working across numerous different product categories – gifts, greeting cards, fabrics, calendars, crafts and home décor, to name just a few – have come on board, and 67 per cent more key art directors are now using the ALSC site to source art and artists for their latest projects. Artists love the website because they can upload and manage their online portfolios easily in one place, they can showcase work privately with licensees, work with clients directly and they keep 100 per cent of their profits. Licensees meanwhile love ALSC because it makes business more streamlined and efficient – and it’s free for them to join. It provides a simple, effective, hassle-free way to review art and find new names to work with, and because they can conduct business via the website it’s all much less time consuming. What’s not to like? Art&Design Licensing Source Book 55

Plus ALSC members also love the networking and training opportunities the site offers as well as clever tools for marketing their pieces and getting their names out there. “The internet has changed how we all do business as artists and licensees,” Cherish, whose own work has appeared on clothes, in books and magazines and on greeting cards, gifts and crafts, explains.“Social media has changed how we meet and work together online and in person. “We began as a group on LinkedIn called ArtOfLicensing.com and pushed the boundaries of networking into Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others – but none of these sites really met out needs to privately show art. “Art Licensing Show is a niche social media platform which allows artists to show their work online to the right people, while protecting it from the internet as a whole so it can maintain its exclusivity and be licensed and taken to market. “We recognised that in today’s fastpaced world where product developers seem to already be spread so thin, they simply don’t always have the time to hop on a plane and fly to a major trade show at great expense. “We are artist-funded by annual subscriptions so together we can offer this free resource to the companies that license art saving everyone a lot of time and money.” Denver-based Cheryl, who launched her own illustration and design studio with her artist husband Benjamin Hummel, is something of a multi-tasker, and on top of running ALSC also teaches marketing, illustration, design and technology at Rocky Mountain

College of Art and Design. She’s certainly received fantastic feedback from both the artists and licensing industry people who use ALSC, including artist Jill Meyer who has called her a ‘pioneer’ in the field, and illustrator Valerie Hart who says:“The most important way ALSC has impacted my art business is with licensing deals. I’ve signed two in the last six months and am currently at the contract negotiating stage with two more manufacturers.” And as for the view that ALSC might not go down too well with leading global industry trade shows, such as Surtex and Blueprint, in actual fact Cherish’s opinion is that it actually adds value to what they do. “Many of our artists and agents will still exhibit at the major shows – but one benefit they are now having is meeting with clients that have already reviewed their art online via ALSC,” she reveals. “They can then spend their valuable time together discussing business items and deepening their relationship. Above left: Artist, illustrator and graphic designer Annie Troe, based in Nebraska, is profiled on the ALSC website. Left: ALSC visionary Cherish Flieder is a successful artist in her own right.

“Another benefit is that product manufacturers and licensees love that they can log into one website to see multiple portfolios in one place. Whereas before ALSC existed, those sourcing art would have had to track literally hundreds of links and passwords to access the portfolios of artists, now they only need one of each which is a huge time-saver and a great benefit for business networking.” So just how does Cherish see ALSC expanding in the coming months and years? “I see the website continuing to be the niche destination for art licensors and licensees to network online. We also have a lot of ideas in the pipeline to deepen the relationship connectivity using the latest technologies and we plan to continue our very popular art challenges and virtual gallery shows as well as offering more online training. “Building this site from scratch has been a bit like climbing Mt Everest but seeing all the products that wouldn’t have existed without it gives me goose bumps and fills me with joy at the same time. “Ultimately I care about helping artists succeed, so seeing the artistic and business growth in our members over the past two years has been wonderful. Watching friendships being formed and business deals made was what it was always all about and seeing that come to fruition is truly delightful and very rewarding.” Art&Design Licensing Source Book 57

Brand Licensing Europe, or BLE as it’s affectionately known, is quite simply the only European show of its kind dedicated to licensing, brand extension and bringing brand owners, agents, licensees and manufacturers together across three days of networking heaven. And of course it’s also a mustattend event for those working in the fields of art, design and illustration. This year the show kicks off at London Olympia on 10 October, running until the 12th, and

there’s plenty to look forward to – with innovative changes planned for the Art, Design & Image Zone that will ensure exhibitors are shown off to their best business advantage, and a host of new names planning to showcase their artistic talents at BLE for the first time. It’s certainly true that the 2017 programme has a lot to live up to, as last year

BLE broke all the records in its nearly 20-year history. More than 7,750 visitors flocked through the doors over the show’s three days with a 10 per cent increase in retailers attending and people travelling to London to take in the premier licensing event from 13 new countries. In total BLE welcomed visitors from a whopping 76 countries across six continents, with everyone keen to network, swot up on some fantastic new brands and images and, of course, secure new licensing deals. BLE’s three show zones include Character & Entertainment and Brands & Lifestyle in addition to the artists, designers, image libraries, illustrators and photographers who provide the perfect show blend in the Art, Design & Image floor space Last year there were 28 exhibitors in the Art, Design & Image Zone and it grew in size by five per cent on 2015’s show. In addition 19 per cent of visitors to the show worked in the field of art and design, providing a fantastic opportunity to make valuable new contacts and hopefully also translate this into new, mutually-beneficial business deals. Plus a new ‘matchmaking’ meetings service only added to the buzzing atmosphere – and led to at least one million-pound agreement. So, looking ahead to this autumn,

what can visitors to BLE 2017 expect when it comes to art and design? “For this year the Art & Design area is going to be improved which will benefit the exhibitors as they’ll be more easily noticed and seen by visitors,” explains BLE marketing manager, Sonia Morjaria-Shann. “We’ve also got a lot of new exhibitors coming on board for 2017 - 19 so far. New Art & Design faces will include Posh Original Art, Country Colours, Hampshire Cultural Trust, Ashcroft Designs and May The Thoughts Be With You – who won the ‘License This’ competition at last year’s event.” Plans to update the Art, Design & Image Zone, include a new stand layout, dedicated signage including a gallery rail banner and new signage on the entrances and stairs. Another exciting addition is a central café feature with more seating which

has been specifically designed to increase and drive footfall flow through the zone. It will also be decorated with exhibitors’ work and is a fantastic option for holding networking meetings. A new multichannel marketing strategy has also been put in place with this show zone in mind and in addition the BLE also has new partnerships with The Bookseller and the Association of Illustrators. And if all this isn’t enough to draw you to Olympia, don’t forget that BLE boasts the largest range of licenses in Europe with more than 2,500 properties on display and industry experts on hand. Take advantage of amazing networking opportunities with more than 7,500 licensing professionals, retailers, product manufacturers and agents, discover new revenue streams and learn something new about licensing with free educational sessions taking place throughout the show. ouse of Turnowsky is in the enviable position of being able to trounce the leading contemporary artists who will be showcasing their trend-based concepts at Surtex and Expo as well as hold its own with the revered heritage brands which draw on their historic treasures. Another key strength is that while the respected design house is based in

Tel Aviv in Israel, its design portfolio is very much aimed at the global stage, as testified by the brand’s profile in 40+ countries while its presence at trade shows will serve to boost this even further. Although the brand is well known through successful distribution agreements on paper products, the decision it took two years ago to embrace licensing opportunities across all manner of products and territories, is not surprisingly reaping fruits for the respected design house. And it is being active to make the most of the opportunities. This year alone, Turnowsky has already flown the flag at Paperworld in Frankfurt and Spring Fair in

A Flick Through The Look Book As part of its commitment to its licensing partners, Turnowsky has published a beautiful perfect bound book of the company’s current collection of 11 key design themes. Testament to the breadth of creative talent and ability to spot and reinterpret trends the design collections are diverse, in tone, mediums used and subject matter. There is high colour, such as Essence of Blossom, a free-hand line and watercolour colourful exuberant floral depictions, but also quirky cute, as evidenced in the 5 O’Clock theme which depict delights of an imaginary tea party. While Black Diamonds Floating World celebrate the noble and elegant style of Japanese art, Retro Vision delves back into the 1950s with its fashionable pastel shades.

77th year of business, Turnowsky represents a new generation of design licensing brands,” explains Dr Kobi Tadmore, ceo of Turnowsky. “In 2016, for the first time, we have sold more than 10 million Turnowsky greeting cards worldwide. This means that 10 million people have shown their love for Turnowsky designs,” he says to underline how its high-end beautifully finished paper products continue chime with the public tastes. Greeting cards and paper products will continue as an important part of the Turnowsky story, through existing as well as new successful distribution tie ups. Its licensing agreement with US

card publishing giant, American Greetings, sees 350 new card designs launching onto the US market every year which its subsidiaries elsewhere in the world can also tap into. “Thanks to our strong partnership with the American Greetings group, the brand is well-known in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. In addition we have a very strong presence in Western Europe, in particular Germany and the Nordic countries. Turnowsky designs are sold in the top department stores, from Macy’s in New York, through KDW in Berlin, and Isetan in Tokyo, as well as exclusive paper stores and leading retailers such as Walmart and Target,” elaborates Kobe. The appointment last year of two licensing agents, The Brand Liaison for North America and Art Ask Agency to cover Europe, supported by a bolstered internal team at Turnowsky put the Below left: Ecell is a new licensee for mobile and tablet cases. brand on an even better footing to prepare for growth on all product areas. As Guy Braun, Turnowsky’s marketing director revealed, since the company has opened its doors to licensing over 20 new licensing partnerships have been signed in multiple territories - as far-reaching as USA, UK, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and Russia - across categories that include: textiles, dishware/tabletop products, home décor, fashion accessories, lifestyle products and gifts. New American licensing partnerships for the House of Turnowsky include Lifetime Brands for Mikasa, Paper Products Designs (PPD), Turnowsky by Quilting Treasure (Cranston) and Demdaco. Meanwhile, on the European front are agreements with Franco Cosimo Panini, TeNeues, Scandecor, BSB, KV&H, Academya Group, Kunst und Bild, Goldbuch, Karto, EastWest, Ecell Global and The Art Group (Pyramid International). So while it is now 77 years into the Turnowsky journey, as Kobe sums up, while it is picking up new partners along the way and colouring in the brand’s ‘map’, some things will remain true to the company’s ethos of old. “Our commitment stays the same: to continue transforming the ordinary, bringing style and beauty to the everyday.”

From high profile art properties through to those dipping their toes into the water for the first time, the sector is well represented across the show, bolstered by the introduction of a dedicated networking event this year. A&D LSB finds out more. ay is a busy month for the art and design licensing business – while New York is hosting Surtex, across America, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Licensing Expo is also acting as a platform for artists, designers, licensors and agents to highlight their latest offerings. The show – which this year runs from May 23-25 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, switching from its previous June date, and forms part of the newly branded Licensing Week – has a dedicated art and design zone. However, as Jessica Blue, svp licensing at UBM, explains there are plenty more established art and design brands present across the entire show floor. “Licensing Expo represents all categories from art to food and beverage, automotive, entertainment and fashion,” Jessica says. “It’s important that we have a good mix of brands on the show floor. “Over the past three years, we have seen a number of established art brands and art agents moving out of the Art and Design zone and taking larger booth spaces in Brand and Agents. “While the Art and Design zone is smaller than in past years, the square

footage that art brands represent on the show floor is still growing.” Some of those exhibiting in the Brands and Agents area include agencies such as Buffalo Works, Jewel Branding and Pink Light Designs. In addition, art brands including Jim Benton and Thomas Kinkade are also present. As well as the networking that the show floor itself affords, this year Licensing Expo is also hosting a dedicated Art & Design Mixer on the Wednesday of the show (May 24). Exhibiting brands and agents will have the chance to gather for drinks and canapés in the Border Grill at the Mandalay Bay, enabling further opportunities to do business. Art and design companies can also benefit from the show’s Matchmaking service, which Jessica says was one of the most successful programmes of last year. “Over 2,500 confirmed meetings were booked through the service and the feedback

was very positive,” she says. “The ability for brand owners to research the attendee database before the show and reach out in advance to people in specific product categories was a bold initiative and a significant benefit to our exhibitors and attendees.” So what advice would Jessica give for first time exhibitors within the art and design category? “Set clear objectives, use the matchmaking service – it’s free for all exhibitors – and, most importantly, follow up with those you met immediately after the show.” For first time visitors, too, the importance of networking is stressed – there are many opportunities including the Opening Night Party. “The goal of Licensing Week is to set all of our attendees and exhibitors up for success and provide them with the tools they need to achieve their goals at our event,” Jessica concludes. Gallery gains The National Gallery is focusing on building its programme in the US and the Far East this year, with an appearance at Licensing Expo undoubtedly helping to raise awareness.
