Welcome to the first Brand and Lifestyle Licensing Awards We feel incredibly privileged to be here with you this afternoon for the very first ever Brand and Lifestyle Licensing Awards, which have quickly become known under their more friendly moniker of ‘the Bellas’. These awards really do break new ground in recognising the dynamism and growth of brand licensing. It was imperative that these awards included categories to reward excellence in brand licensed merchandise, IP management as well as retail execution to complete that vital circle of licensing. The B&LLAs further endorses our commitment to and connection with the licensing industry. It is wonderful how our September Licensing Awards have grown in size and stature and while brand licensing does feature within these, the main focus has historically been on entertainment activities. The introduction of the B&LLAs, being totally dedicated to brand and lifestyle licensing activity means we are now able to do justice to this rapidly evolving sophisticated arena (as evidenced by the developing ‘upstairs area’ of BLE in October). We are delighted that this inaugural B&LLAs event brings together retailers, licensees and brand owners for an LIMA has given its official support afternoon of networking and celebration of the B&LLAs: in fabulous surroundings – but we “Brands have really stepped up into the licensing limelight and the Brand & couldn’t have done it without the Lifestyle Licensing Awards will duly fantastic support of those from the recognise excellence in this field. The Extra Ingredients

The Big Build-Up For the B&LLAs to establish themselves as prestigious awards right from the off has relied on some key elements – an industry drive for recognition in this area, strong entries, a judging process with integrity, trade support and awareness. And to this, a quality awards ceremony that befits the audience, committed sponsors and media backing to spread the news and you have a comprehensive ‘tick box list’. Here we share some of the building blocks of the B&LLAs’ foundations.

The Triumphant Trophy Exuding the elegance of the Art Deco era, with the strong stylised lines and pewter finish, the trophy for the B&LLAs was commissioned by Max Publishing, owners of the B&LLAs, working closely with Mick Worwood, owner of Conceptual Creations to arrive at the final stunning design. The trophies were sculpted by Garry Goodman, a highly respected British sculptor and model maker, before being cast and then the pewter finish being polished in Conceptual Creations’ UK studio. “The trophies are all individually handmade and finished. The way we apply the metal is our secret, but once applied the trophy goes through six different polishing processes and lacquering to achieve the end result,” reveals Mick, who is no stranger to licensing having been very active in music licensing scene when it was still in its infancy. “My first licensing deal was with Rolling Stones in 1973!” he admits. Mick also now owns Compulsion Gallery, which produces pewter sculptures with Conceptual Creations being the trophy arm of the business (also producing the awards Left: The B&LLAs trophy, which will have a shiny for The Licensing Awards, the Progressive Preschool Awards pewter finish, has been designed and created in the and the LIMA International Licensing Awards). UK specifically for the awards.

The Impressive Cast

While the B&LLAs’ spotlight is shining directly on the finalists and winners of these awards, the awards event is also drawing on the expertise of some talented individuals to help ensure that the whole afternoon is truly memorable. Wayne Hemingway has so many claims to fame that they would fill this page. Yes, he co-founded Red or Dead which lives on as a design brand, but he continues to trailblaze in many directions, from vintage festivals to business mentoring schemes, design projects galore as well as significant housing

regeneration schemes. He is an inspiring speaker and is here to sprinkle some of this inspiration on the attendees today. Hugh Dennis was a perfect choice as host for the B&LLA’s first awards ceremony knowing and understands brands as well as the importance of comedy in life. Before becoming a celebrated comedian (including being one half of Punt and Dennis with comedy partner Steve Punt) and actor (everyone knows him as Pete Brockman, the father in the BBC One sitcom Outnumbered) Hugh was a brand manager at Unilever for brands which include Mentadent, Timoteo and Denim aftershave. Additionally, one of the most memorable voices in the UK – and today Alan Dedicoat, the ‘Voice of the Balls’ on the National Lottery programmes on BBC One has tuned his vocal chords as the voiceover for the B&LLAs!

Above: Chupa Chups designed the menu card for today.

Food For Thought The Dorchester is renowned not only for its sumptuous surroundings, but also the quality of its cuisine. The menu for the B&LLAs was selected by its head chef and Chupa Chups has created the keepsake menu. Commenting on its involvement with the B&LLAs, Christine Cool, area licensing manager, Perfetti van Melle (of which Chupa Chups is a part) said: “It is extremely motivating to hear that the UK licensing industry will now have a platform to recognise excellence of brand licensing execution. What makes brand licensing unique is that it needs to be a part of the overall brand strategy as well as a sustainable activity. These awards honour the work of the brand teams that build those brands over time.”

Above: The sumptuous Dorchester Hotel hosts the inaugural B&LLA awards today (20 April 2016).

Adding To The Happiness Further reinforcing a commitment to the B&LLAs, Happy Jackson (created by Heather Flynn and Giles Andree) is a category sponsor. As Giles comments: “Brand licensing seems to be going from strength to strength, involving some really exciting designers and truly creative licensees, whose interpretation of design onto product is often as creative as the concepts behind them. Retailers are getting progressively more familiar with the value of critical mass when it comes to rolling a brand out

In keeping with the calibre of the B&LLAs as well as the venue where the awards event takes place, the official tickets had to be very special. Leading British illustrator Heather Flynn (whose many claims to fame include being the creator of the Alice Scott brand as well as cocreator Happy Jackson) undertook the creative challenge to design the inaugural B&LLAs official Above: Ernest Hemingway at his invitation, which are certain to become keepsakes. desk at The Dorchester, the Sharing the origins of the design concept for the B&LLAs’ venue of the B&LLAs, the inspiration behind the official invitation, Heather reveals that the inspiration came from invitation for the event. one of her favourite authors (and former Dorchester Below: The multi-fold official resident), Ernest Hemingway. “Of course, the hotel has invitation that was designed by illustrator Heather Flynn. played host to an illustrious line of artists, authors and film stars in its history, but my memories of reading Hemingway as a travelling teenager and his rich accounts made me dig out my old sketchbooks from those trips. I enjoyed revisiting the colours, patterns and moods, reinterpreting them to create a gorgeous invitation.” She adds that one of the starting points was images of flags that “caught my eye during a trip I made to Venice all those years ago. I took their essence into contemporary patterns, added interesting architectural folds and finishes – all of which have been enhanced by the gorgeous board!” Specialist paper company, GF Smith has supplied all the board for the ticket and the envelope while Leeds-based printers Team Impressions produced the invitations. through their stores into various categories - and consumers seem to like the idea of being able to associate themselves and their lifestyles with the brands that they aspire to. Happy Jackson is delighted to be supporting the B&LL Awards because, although they share the same ‘licensing’ space, people buy into design and entertainment brands for very different reasons. It’s wonderful to have an arena for design-led brands to be recognised without being crowded out by the noise that big, global media companies can make, and where originality and creativity can really shine.”

Spreading The Word Playing a pivotal role in helping to spread the word about the B&LLAs has been PR partners Kilogramedia (headed up by the one and only Jane Garner). In addition to Max Publishing’s own media channels (notbly the daily enewsletter LicensingSource.net and Licensing Source Book), the B&LLAs official media partner is Total Brand Licensing. Commenting on its involvement, Francesca Ash, publisher of Total Brand Licensing said: “Total Brand Licensing is delighted to support the Brand and Lifestyle Licensing Awards 2016. The hundred most valuable brands (in 2013) were worth over $2.55 trillion, which would make them the 6th biggest country by GDP ahead of Russia, Brazil and India – the sector absolutely deserves its own dedicated awards that recognise the extraordinary power of the brand sector within the licensing industry.”

The Entry And Judging Process The entry process for all the B&LLA categories, whether for the product, property or retailing awards, was undertaken completely online through a dedicated site. It was created (by Bionic Communications) not only to be easy to navigate, but also to make it as simple as possible for entrants to upload imagery and information. “We took on board industry feedback to ensure that the site could accommodate important background information which would put each entry into context for the judges,” explains Paul Walker, managing director of Bionic Communications, which built the site. Entering all the categories of the B&LLAs was free of charge and the closing date for all categories was 3 February 2016. Distinct judging panels were formed to undertake the judging of the different categories. Each judge individually considered the online submissions. For example, key retailer buyers judged the product categories, while licensors and brand owners as well as licensees formed the judging panel for the retailer categories. The finalists in each category were announced last month, although Above: The homepage of the website that was created for the B&LLAs by the winners are not being unveiled until the awards ceremony today. The Industry’s Support Below left: Automotive brands, such as Volkswagen exhibited at BLE in 2015 as well as countless other fashion, heritage and FMCG brands.

Words From The Wise Having a good idea is one thing; turning that idea into a reality is quite another. Crucial to making the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards a much wanted reality has been the support and commitment from a vast array of sponsors who share the vision. Here a selection of sponsors share their views on the brand licensing sector’s evolution and the importance of the B&LLAs.

Headline Sponsor

Above: Jessica Blue.

Jessica Blue, senior vice president - licensing of UBM Americas (which includes BLE, Licensing Expo and License Global), headline sponsor the B&LLAs as well as sponsor of the Licensed Heritage or Institution Brand of the Year category: “We are in a very unique position to observe the trends in the brand licensing arena which are mirrored at the BLE show. The success of BLE 2015, the biggest in its 17-year history, is a good indication of the strength of the industry. We saw incredible growth in 2015 year across a number of categories in our Brands & Lifestyle zone, including automotive, sport, food and beverage, beauty, music, publishing and heritage and these are all areas we would expect to develop further in 2016. Charity licensing is another area where we have witnessed growth, as many organisations realise the potential of licensing not only for increased revenue, but for brand awareness too. We hope to encourage more charities to BLE 2016 to explore these possibilities. It will also be interesting to see more online brands move into licensing. The 2015 event attracted a considerable amount of national press interest this year, more so than ever before. Channel 4 chose to film at the show for its ‘Supershoppers’ series to explain to consumers how the licensing industry works. All of this points towards one thing; the licensing industry is booming – from bringing vintage brands back to life to propelling online brands onto retailers’ radars – licensing is a crucial element of any brand strategy, and we’re proud to be part of this fast paced industry.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “We are delighted to be supporting the awards, as we feel it is crucial to recognise and reward innovation, talent and best practice in the industry.”

Right: Steve Manners. Below left: Wendy Hallett.

Wendy Hallett MBE, founder and managing director of Hallett Retail - The Concessions People, sponsor of the Licensed Fashion Brand of the Year category: “There is no denying that brands are real heroes in the consumer's eyes – and this is set to increase further, right across the retail and product landscape. This is very much reflected in the evolution of our company, Hallett Retail, over the last 17 years, since its inception. We operate a completely unique concessions concept bringing together a portfolio of brands under one concession umbrella. We now work with over 100 fashion, jewellery and accessory brands, matching them with leading high street retail names to create tailored concession collections which chime with their customer tastes.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “It is a privilege to sponsor the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards as they celebrate the vibrancy of brand activity."

BRAND & LIFESTYLE LICENSING AWARDS 2016

Steve Manners, executive vice president of CPLG, sponsor of the Best Licensed Fashion Accessories or Lifestyle Product or Range: “The industry is so diverse that trying to judge brands and lifestyle against entertainment properties was becoming somewhat frustrating! Brand and lifestyle licensing is so broad and perhaps more subtle, and deserves its own celebration. It’s a fascinating and imaginative area of licensing of which CPLG is proud to be part.” Supporting the B&LLAs: "CPLG is thrilled to be supporting the Brand and Lifestyle Awards. The awards are being launched at the perfect time for CPLG. We have quietly been expanding our representation into the brand and lifestyle area over the past two years, recognising how important it has become, and can be less volatile than entertainment.“

Right Richard Pink.

Richard Pink, md of Pink Key Consulting, which represents Pringles, sponsor of the Best Licensed Brand Home and Garden Product or Range category: “I’ve been in the licensing industry long enough to know that consumers are a fickle lot! Brand licensing puts some stability into what could otherwise be an extremely volatile and unpredictable industry. When a property that is high-flying right now has disappeared, the brands they will still be there, generating long-term allegiance and long term income.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “I’m supporting these awards because I would like to see others doing the same, and not to neglect these brands even when the temptation is to throw everything at the latest hottest thing. Brands are for life, even if other things might just be for Christmas!”

Sam Johnson, general manager of worldwide licensing for JCB Consumer Products, sponsor of the Best Licensed Brand Health & Beauty Product or Range category: “We are supporting the inaugural B&LLAs to help throw the spotlight on an increasingly diverse and important part of the licensing industry. It is a sector that more and more people and organisations are interested in as a way of extending their brand reach, to engage deeper with consumers and to build incremental revenue streams. JCB have been active within this sector for the best part of two decades now and we are proud of our licensing programme, which extends well beyond our home UK territory.”

Saul Leese, head of retail brand marketing at i2i Group, organiser of Autumn Fair (and Spring Fair), sponsor of the Licensed Talent Brand 2016 category: “Autumn Fair and Spring Fair have made it easier for tens of thousands of retailers throughout the UK and beyond to source licensed products. A new licensed products page on our website features the very latest products and where to discover them on the show floor.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “As a UK leading retail event for showcasing products across gift, housewares, home textiles, bedding, furnishing and wall art, Autumn Fair is proud to support this award.”

Above: Adam Bass.

Above: Saul Leese.

Adam Bass, founder and md of Golden Goose, which is sponsoring the Best Licensed Brand Consumer Electronics or Electricals Product or Range category: “When Golden Goose started working in corporate brand licensing in 2002 we knew it would take time for brands to embrace licensing as a valuable tool in their marketing mix. Now, however, we are regularly being approached by established corporate brands looking to increase their brand equity in a cash positive way. When big brands jump categories, consumers take notice – so licensing is a great way to increase market share and brand penetration in a fragmented media universe.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “When we started out, the corporate side of licensing was an unacknowledged ‘little brother’ to the entertainment side. With white papers for various marketing publications and on www.brandlicensing.co.uk, Golden Goose have long been campaigning for recognition for licensing as a marketing discipline. That’s why we’re happy to support this important initiative to have separate awards for licensing success for the corporate side of the industry.” Right: Dominic Wheeler.

Dom Wheeler, director of Brands With Influence, sponsor of the Best Licensed Brand Gifting Product or Range category: “The brand licensing category has been growing rapidly in recent years and the power of brands to drive consumer action is bigger than ever. It’s therefore really important that the industry comes together to review and share some of the really excellent work that has been done. Here at Brands with Influence (BWI) we have built the agency on the back of a true belief in the importance of brands and branding. Whether in the world of entertainment, sport, charity or corporate, a brand with influence will have a greater chance of success.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “It’s fantastic that Max Publishing has created this new platform to celebrate the best in brand licensing and we look forward to celebrating at The Dorchester - now there is an under utilised brand!”

Above: Sam Johnson. Below: JCB’s covers all Terrain.

Russell Neale Anthony Dever, managing director of Those Licensing People, sponsor of the Best Licensed Brand Food or Beverage Product or Range category: Supporting the B&LLAs: “Those Licensing People are thrilled to sponsor this major inaugural event in the licensing calendar. Within an increasingly fragmenting market, recognition for hero brands, which by extension support and strengthen the retail offer is increasingly important. Brand management is now a vital function of the TLP commercial offer which is why we are Right: Russell Dever. delighted to get behind these awards.”

Denise Penn, director, business development EMEA Octane 5 International, sponsor of the Brand Licensing Ambassador Of The Year award: “Licensed product has a massive voice in the marketplace. For a brand, licensed product delivers millions of consumer touch points, and more importantly, ongoing brand impressions. It is vital that brands elevate the importance of licensing within their own organisations as not only a vital branding component, but also as a critical compliance function. This strategy must be supported through leading edge enterprise technology tools and data analytics.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “We at Octane5 are passionate about brand licensing, and feel strongly that the industry should celebrate the hard work undertaken in developing excellent consumer products which deliver a unique brand extension experience.”

Nicolas Bonard, svp of Discovery Global Enterprises, sponsor of the Best Specialist Licensed Brand Retailer Execution category: “Brand licensing is becoming increasingly important because of the longevity associated with the term ‘brand’. Rather than being focused on an individual character or series Above: Nicolas Bonnard. property with potentially limited life expectancy, there is a focus on a sustainable entity that can stand alone at retail for a prolonged period of time.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “We are excited to participate in the launch of the inaugural Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards which truly celebrate the achievements of those licensors, licensees and retailers who are incredibly passionate about what they do.”

Ian Downes, md of Start Licensing, sponsor of the Best Licensed Brand Children’s Product or Range category: “I think brand licensing has always been an important part of the licensing mix, however in recent years the UK has caught up with the US in recognition terms. Licensing professionals recognise that there is Above: Ian Downes. commercial value in licensing brands and in turn brand owners feel more comfortable about engaging with licensing. Brands offer licensees and retailers well-defined opportunities with a planned and strategic development path.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “We were glad to support these Awards as we are keen that the brand sector flourishes in the UK. It is an exciting market sector to work in and places a great emphasis on innovation.”

Michele Kuprewicz, marketing manager of IFL Science, sponsor of the Best Grocer/Supermarket Licensed Brand Retailer Execution category: “Over the last few years there has been an enormous surge in the number of brands entering the licensing world, as testified by BLE’s growth each year.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “These awards are of significant importance, not only to already established brands, but also those up and coming. It's always important to recognise all the hard work licensors, licensees and retailers do behind the closed doors. Licensing is all about creativity and innovation.”

Right: Angela Farrugia.

Angela Farrugia, group managing director of TLC, sponsor of the Best Licensed Brand Adult Apparel Product or Range category: Supporting the B&LLAs: “As TLC are a pioneer in the brand licensing arena, we are more than delighted to support other pioneers that can showcase the industry’s excellent work in this space.”

Rob Kimm, managing director of Kimm & Miller, sponsor of the Licensed FMCG Food and Beverage Brand of the Year category: “The licensed gift arena has grown in prominence over the last six years, Kimm & Miller have been privileged to be involved in this, and we’d also like to think have played a part in its success.” Supporting the B&LLAs: “Having attended the UK Licensing Awards since 2010, (and been fortunate enough to pick up a couple of awards along the way), we’re hugely excited to now be involved with the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards.” Above: Rob Kimm.

Liz Crawford, licensing group VP and show director of Brand Select, sponsor of the Licensed Lifestyle Brand of the Year category: “Brand licensing provides brands the opportunity to extend the overall life of the brand and generate new revenue streams. The business of licensing is perfect for current and emerging brands in their efforts increase revenue while increasing customer loyalty and affinity for the brand. For heritage and evergreen brands licensing provides a platform that engages new customers, while strengthening the brand image and reputation with core partners and customers.” Lisa Reiner, managing director Europe & Asia Pacific of Beanstalk, sponsor of the Best High Street Fashion Retailer Licensed Brand Execution category: “Licensing as an industry continues to flourish and there has been an upsurge in the market outlook, with retailers expressing positive views on growth and consumer spending. Licensing of corporate trademarks is an important, growing part of the industry; for example, food and restaurant licensing is currently very strong in the UK market while fashion maintains its position as the most prolific sector for licensing worldwide. Corporate licensing is a strategic business model that offers many benefits to a brand owner; it strengthens the relationship with consumers, increases brand awareness, protects the trademark and generates new revenue streams.“ Supporting the B&LLAs: “Beanstalk has been at the forefront of corporate brand licensing for 20+ years, and we are pleased to see that this specialist, growing sector of the industry is being recognised with awards.” Above: Lisa Reiner.
