CALENDAR NEWS Welcome to Progressive Calendars 2018, Max Publishing’s annual publication dedicated to the calendar and diary sector. This edition includes coverage of the first ever Calies, UK Calendar Awards, as well as insight into how calendar sales panned out for retailers, industry comment and new titles for 2019. German Bound BrownTrout will be showing at the Paperworld show in Frankfurt in late January 2018, for the first time (Hall 5.1/C14). Managing director Jack Straw explains the rationale behind this decision: “Showing this year at Paperworld is Above: Paperworld is the premiere trade show for entirely motivated by our stationery, office supplies and writing instruments. massive expansion into personal planning products and diaries. We have secured a licence with Franklin Covey – a world famous brand to sell a range of their famous planning products for both organising and life planning in to retail for the first time.
The Calies Are A Big Hit New UK calendar awards embraced by the industry The Calies, the UK Calendar Awards, made their successful debut at the end of last year, with the new awards having been warmly welcomed by the calendar and diary community. Launched by Max Publishing, owners of Progressive Greetings, the awards recognised excellence right across the calendar, Advent calendar and diaries sector, including retail, charity and corporate titles. The winners of the inaugural Calies were unveiled at a memorable early evening awards event at the historic Stationers Hall, in the City of London, that was attended by over 150 retailers, calendar publishers, diary manufacturers, licensors and trade suppliers. Among the delighted winners were Allan and Bertram, Allsorted, Andrews McMeel UK, Carousel Calendars, The Eco-Friendly Card Co, Flame Tree Publishing, Moving Stationery, Pomegranate, Portico Designs, Roger la Borde, Rose Calendars, teNeues, Turnowsky and Universe Publishing. It was an especially emotional evening for Gary Beck, co-founder of Calendar Club/Carousel Calendars, and Danilo’s founder Laurence Prince, both of whom were presented with a prestigious Calendar Ambassador Award. Comedian Tania Edwards, who hosted the awards ceremony, went down a storm with the audience. “You can tell what stage you are in your life by your choice of calendars. You start by liking cats, move onto pop stars, then rock stars, then back to cats… me, I have just ordered 39 copies of the Hurrah for Gin calendar!” she quipped, making reference to a Portico Designs’ title that went on to win the award for Best Entertainment or Humorous Calendar. The Calies 2018 will take place on 28 November 2018, again at Stationers’ Hall, London. The awards will open for entries in the summer. (See pages 18-21 for more pics)
A Window Of Opportunity For Ling Ling Design has diversified into Advent calendars for the first time. The Kent-based publisher is debuting with a dozen different Advent calendar designs at the start on 2018, with a collection that spans from the traditional to the cheery. While Advents may be new for Ling they are a product that Sarah La-Plain grew up with. Sarah joined Ling in the summer as charity sector manager, but brought with her a huge experience on Advent calendars. Known as the ‘Advent calendar queen’, Sarah worked closely with her parents in the Caltime Advent calendar family joining Woodmansterne when it acquired the company a few years ago. She recently sold calendars and bespoke cards to national accounts including charities before leaving Woodmansterne to join Ling Design a few months ago. As part a launch incentive, retailers can buy all 12 designs for the price of 11. Above: ‘Advent Calendar Queen’, Sarah La-Plain who joined Ling in the summer is bringing her wealth of knowledge to the fore. CALENDAR NEWS
Goodbye To J Salmon
Daniel Prince Becomes md At Danilo
Calendar Publisher closes
Daniel Prince has been promoted to managing director of Danilo, taking over the role from his father Laurence, founder of the company who continues as chairman and chief executive. Daniel, who has been operations director of the company for many years, is certainly no stranger to the business, having started with the company in 2001.
J Salmon, the oldest calendar and post card publisher in the UK, has withdrawn from publishing after over 100 years of trading. The Kent-based publisher cited a lack of succession management options as being part of the main reason for the closure, together with economic considerations. The company has been owned by the Salmon family since it was founded in 1880. It is currently run by Charles and Harry Salmon, the fifth generation of the family to be involved in the business. In a statement issued by Charles and Harry, the company’s joint managing directors, they said: “Increasingly challenging trading conditions and changes to the nature and size of the market for our publications have resulted in uncertainty over the viability of our trade going forward, and our current structure as a UK based printer publisher. We have also had to consider that there are no more members of the family who wish to join the business.” The withdrawal of Salmon from the market does however open up opportunities for other publishers. Commenting on the closure of Salmon, managing director of Carousel Calendars, Steve Plackett said: “We are very sad to hear about Salmon’s closing. It is sad for the staff, management and the industry in general. Our thoughts go with the staff, many have been with Salmon for a very long time. Regional calendars are difficult. By their nature print runs are low and unit costs are therefore higher than general calendars so it is a tricky area to get right. We have added approximately 40 new titles to fill any gaps in the range we may have had.” BrownTrout, for example, has taken on the ever-popular Fred Bassett range with managing director Jack Straw saying: “This title was a mainstay of the J Salmon range of calendars for many years and BrownTrout were keen to maintain this iconic product.”

Danilo’s Calendar Top 10s Girl band, Little Mix are top of the pops where calendars are concerned, though Harry Potter has clearly been working his magic on the calendar front, jumping five places since last year taking it claiming second position in Danilo’s Official Top Ten Chart of its entertainment titles. Released to the media to help promote calendar buying generally at the start of December, the Danilo Top 10s are charts compiled from sales data from Danilo online, HMV, Tesco, Calendar Club, Amazon, together with retail chains and independent retailers around the UK as well as overseas. For the first time ever, Danilo revealed a separate sports calendar Top 10, which shows that Manchester United is top of the league, demoting Liverpool (last year’s winner) into second position. Entertainment Calendar Top Ten 2018 Titles (last year’s position in brackets) 1st Little Mix (5th) 2nd Harry Potter (7th) 3rd Cliff Richard (10th) 4th Rick and Morty (new entry) 5th Elvis Presley (6th) 6th Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi (8th) 7th Minecraft (new entry) 8th Kylie (14th) 9th JoJo Siwa (new entry) 10th Kelly Brook (15th) Sports Calendar Top Ten 2018 Titles 1st Manchester United (2nd) 2nd Liverpool (1st) 3rd Tottenham Hotspur (17th) 4th Chelsea (16th) 5th Arsenal (11th) 6th WWE (18th) 7th Manchester City (new entry) 8th England Rugby (new entry) 9th Newcastle United (new entry) 10th England Cricket Team (new entry)

Who’s Buying Putin’s Wall Calendar? In a very strange bit of #fakenews, British media covered a story about the Russian media covering the story of the success in the UK of Vladimir Putin’s 2018 calendar. Only problem seems to be that it hasn’t been a success over here. Moscow’s TV5 said the calendar Putin’s 2018 calendar had been “selling like hot cakes in Great Above: hasn’t quite been the hot seller as reported in Russian media. Britain, where it became popular with buyers almost immediately”, but it did state that only the online vendors were calling it a ‘bestseller’. “Reviewers of the merchandise are in awe of the Russian president’s way of life and suggest that buyers share the positive emotions,” one newsreader said. Jack Straw, managing director of BrownTrout chuckled at the story and commented: “I have not come across this particular item but I have no doubt that it exists. If it is being bought here, it can only be in an ironic sense in my view.”
Top: Little Mix has just announced its 2018 tour. Above right: Cartoon Network’s Rick and Morty is a new entry in Danilo’s entertainment Top Ten. Right: Manchester United led the field in Danilo’s sports titles league table.
News In Brief l Portico celebrates its 30th anniversary this
year with its biggest product launch ever - over 70 new products, including many new calendar, organisers and dairies. “Our business has changed dramatically over the year,” says Charlie Bassil, sales director. “Having been known for doing media branded greeting cards (Disney, Bob The Builder, The Simpsons), they are now less 10% of our business. We’ve really expanded into gift and stationery in the UK.”

POINT OF VIEW
A STRAW POLL “We find ourselves with a healthy, but mature market in which it is difficult, but not impossible, to find ways to grow,” was how Jack Straw, md of BrownTrout Publishers UK summed up the plight of the UK calendar sector in a pithy speech he delivered at The Calies last November. Progressive Calendars was all ears to hear what this calendar stalwart had to say. Jack Straw, managing director of BrownTrout Publishers UK, is naturally affable by nature. His easy-going manner has served him well with retailers and colleagues over the several decades he has been involved both in greeting cards and calendars (through his time with Accord, The Ink Group and latterly BrownTrout UK). That said, he is not someone to shy away from a situation just because it would not make a pretty picture on the front of a calendar. Given the brief, by Calies’ organisers Max Publishing, to share his views on the UK calendar market, however controversial, Jack did not hold back.
He certainly packed a lot into his 10 minute speech before the official awards ceremony, tracking the sector’s evolution over the last 20 years. In his quick fire delivery he rattled through the boons and banes to business, putting the audience’s brains into a tail-spin lamenting the loss of the ‘good old days’, while joining Jack in his quest to pounce on new opportunities. Citing what Jack feels marked a step change for the retailing of calendars in the UK, he outlined the impact that book retailer Borders made on the market starting in 1996/1997, encouraging a broadening of types and number of calendar titles being offered, with extended space being given over to the product. “In the space of 5-6 years, the value of the UK calendar market grew by 25%,” recalled Jack. “I remember counting 140 different stands
at the Spring Fair back then, that were offering calendars. It was a wonderful time for calendar publishers and retailers.” However, he also said that this buoyant time also saw the introduction of SOR, something that was the norm in the book trade. “However, everyone was having such a good time we didn’t really mind that much!” Jack believes that the ‘good times’ started to come to an end in 2008 when “consumer confidence was wavering, and price rises were difficult to attain at retail, yet costs were increasing. The last 10 years have definitely been more difficult for the sector.” Aside from the after effects of the Brexit decision (most notably the devaluation of £sterling which affects calendar production costs), Jack also feels that the changing retail landscape and consumer shopping habits have been pivotal to the changing fortunes on the calendar front. “You cannot ignore the influence of the internet - 84% of all adults now use the internet once a day - accounting for £60 billion worth of sales, double that of 2012, with Amazon undoubtedly set to grow further,” said Jack, underlining how this major web player has already changed the shape of many product sector’s sales. “Calendars, like books, do lend themselves to be sold online, but that does not

mean they do not have a place on the high street.” As Jack points out, “the high street is polarising. At one end there has been a growth of specialists selling products at higher prices and then there is the growth of discounters with those in the middle being squeezed. We will have to accept that there will be less stores on the high street in the future,” says Jack realistically. Looking specifically at the calendar sector, Jack said that publishers have had to become a lot more savvy. “Looking back to 20 years ago I am not sure how many publisher knew or really understood profit margins, now they do! What is clear is that costs have risen and prices will have to as well, but we all need to maintain the quality as that is what will keep the consumer’s interest,” Jack believes. While he acknowledges growth is not going to come easy there are still opportunities out there. “Just look at the growth of organisers and planners. Above all I do believe that quality will win through. Retailers and publishers need to work more collaboratively to protect and grow this important product area,” Jack urged, before concluding with his prophesy: “I don't know what the market will look like, even in three years hence, but my hunch is that calendars will still be bought, but from less stores, in better locations and at higher prices.”

RETAILER REVELATIONS
Below left: Calendar Club had 300 temporary sites from the end of September to the beginning of January this year. Below: YouTube sensation JoJo Siwa (from Danilo) had a strong debut performance for Calendar Club. Below left middle: Little Mix (from Danilo) was top of the pops (and calendar sales) for Calendar Club. Bottom left: Will Donald Trump calendars be great again for Calendar Club? Bottom right: Sales of calendars at Waterstones are up year-on-year.
The selling season for calendars and dated products is short and sweet and so it is only now as the dust settles that we are able to reflect back on the winners (and losers) as well as general customer shopping habits. Progressive Calendars caught up with several retailers to find out how sales stacked up.
Tottenham Hotspur in 7th (after their strongest sales performance since Christmas 2012), and reigning Premier League champions Chelsea return to the bestseller chart for the first time since Christmas 2009, finishing the year in 10th position.” After years of dominance from the One Directions and Justin Biebers of the world, the lack of an all-conquering, floppy-haired teen heartthrob continues to have an impact on the licensing climate. This was reflected in the charts, which aside from Little Mix featured just one other contemporary celebrity - Tom Hardy in 8th. The bestseller chart was rounded out by some of the usual suspects: Elvis Presley (4th), Cliff Richard (6th) and the iconic yellow Mum’s Family Calendar (9th). “Interestingly, eight of our top 10 best-selling calendars
From the end of September to the beginning of January over 300 Calendar Club temporary sites open across the UK and Ireland - from retail units to stands in the centre of shopping malls - selling roughly four million calendars every year. Rob Dand, calendar buyer for the Calendar Club, has been analysing the bestseller charts and reveals the favourites. “Coming in at the top of the pile for the very first time was the official Little Mix calendar from Danilo. The British pop group continued to build on their strong performance last year, when they made their debut appearance in our end-of-year top 10 (at number 5). In the end, they pipped last year’s bestseller Manchester United to the post by one of the narrowest margins in Calendar Club UK and Ireland’s 19year history. It is also the first time since Kylie Minogue in 2004 that a female celebrity calendar has occupied the top spot.” For the first time ever, the Calendar Club’s top 10 featured five football teams. “Liverpool finished just behind Manchester United in 3rd, with Arsenal narrowly missing out on a Champions League place in 5th,

SHOPTALK Indie viewpoint: Lucy Sticka, co-owner of Little Paperie, Ashbourne, Derbyshire: “With calendars we get asked a lot for the perpetual calendar and desk calendars. We tend to only stock the Rifle Paper Co calendar and Kate Spade at the moment as they do seem to be slow selling for us until it hits January. Diaries have been selling well for us - mainly the Rifle Paper Co Planners and Kate Spade and Ban.do planners. Planners seem to be what people are looking for these days, as opposed to a simple diary and are almost a replacement for a calendar. Sales of planners has definitely risen this year. We see a trend on social media of people wanting to have the picture perfect planner and can only see that going from strength to strength.” Right: Planners, such as this one from the Rifle Paper Co, are popular at Little Paperie.
saw a growth in full price unit sales versus the previous year,” says Rob. “Only the Mum’s Family Calendar and Arsenal FC experienced a small decline.” Looking further down the list, Rob picks out strong debut performances from Lego Batman, colourful YouTuber and hair bow salesperson JoJo Siwa, animated series Rick & Morty, Love Island contestant Chris Hughes, and video games Overwatch and Five Nights at Freddy’s. “We also welcomed back a handful of former favourites in the shape of Minecraft, Ed Sheeran and James Bond,” says Rob. “Some of the most engaging trends this year, mirrored elsewhere in retail, included unicorns, mermaids, sloths and Donald Trump. The president clearly among good company there, on a personal mission to ‘make calendars great again’.” Over at Waterstones, calendars still prove to be popular with its customers, with the company reporting a huge lift in sales of 2017 calendars last year vs 2016 calendars. Claire
Fitzgerald, buyer for cards, giftwrap and calendars for Waterstones comments: “Mini wall calendars had a particularly good year, in terms of year-on-year sales, which suggests that some customers prefer a more compact format to the standard wall calendar. Waterstones’ customer favourites among the standard wall format include Moomin by Tove Jansson (Flame Tree), Banksy (Carousel) and the Mum’s Family Wall Calendar (Workman), which have remained in the top 10 in recent years. “The Italia Calendar (BrownTrout) sold particularly well this year, making it into our top 20, perhaps as it provides a form of escapism for those a bit disillusioned by the dreary British weather we’ve had of late,” says Claire. In the Page-a-Day range, the Cat Gallery (Workman) was the top
performer. The Johanna Basford Boxed Calendar (a colouring-in calendar from BrownTrout) remained in the top 5 Page-aDays, despite an overall downturn in the colouring in trend that thrived last year. Claire reports that humour titles also sold much better than in previous years. “In diaries, our top sellers were the Cath Kidston Wells Rose Pocket Diary, Faber & Faber Poetry Desk Diary and the RHS desk diary,” says Claire. While Waterstones’ experienced a drop in overall diary sales, they were still encouraging when looking at them within the context of the last few years. Meanwhile at John Lewis, assistant buyer for stationery, Lizzie Batchelar, gave a big call out to family planners. “We had a great success with the family planner format this year, with the Busy B range our top seller. The Emma Bridgewater Family Planner [Carousel] also sold well, as did the new Hurrah for Gin slim calendar [from Portico].” Busy B also dominates full year diary sales, along with the Caspari Snake Skin diary, Collins diaries and Moleskine diaries. “The Boxclever Press Life Book was also a top seller, containing lots of clever organisational features so really great for planning,” says Lizzie. “We sold out early of the Ban.do 'I am very busy' diary and also did well with Kate Spade.”
Above left: The Moomin calendar from Flame Tree has been in Waterstone’s top 10 the past few years. Right: Busy B diaries and family planner dominated John Lewis’ diary sales and calendar sales. Left: The Cat Gallery was the top performer in Day-a-Page calendars at Waterstones.
Indie viewpoint: Mark Janson-Smith, managing director of Postmark, five shops in London: “Our like-for-like calendar and diary sales are pretty static but are still strong and showing no sign of a decline, we all still like to write things down on paper! It isn't an area we really try to grow year-on-year but this is more to do with how much we are willing to commit due to it being a dated product with a limited shelf life. Diary sales are always good for us. We generally stick to the designs that tie-in with our notebook offering, so Leuchtturm 1917 and Moleskine are the brands we do best with each year.” Right: At Postmark, diaries tie-in with notebook offerings from Leuchtturm 1917.

THE CALIES’ CALENDAR AMBASSADORS
AMBASSADORS The Calies awards event culminated with the presentation of two Calendar Ambassador awards, to two special individuals - Laurence Prince, founder of Danilo and Gary Beck, cofounder of Calendar Club UK and Otter House (Carousel Calendars). A Prince among men Through sheer audacity and tenacity, Laurence Prince has ‘sealed the deal’ for calendars with a long list of stars. Laurence can lay claim to a myriad of calendar collaborations in the world of music, sport and entertainment that few would have thought possible. He started at the top, clinching the rights to produce an official Elvis calendar - travelling to LA and handing over a suitcase full with $25,000 to Elvis’ manager Colonel Parker, shortly after the star’s death. But it is not just in the actual signings for which Laurence is to be lauded, but the ethical and supportive way he has forged the Danilo business, through investing in consumer PR as well as stoutly defending the calendar industry from non-official merchandise by joining forces with others to clamp down on counterfeit products. Anyone who has been involved in calendars at some time will have experienced Laurence’s larger than life personality and his irrepressible ‘chutzpah’.
Beck-oned to the stage Gary Beck’s unique approach to business hails from his unlikely route to the top. Having started his career at the BBC, Gary proved himself to be adept at finding solutions - evidenced on one particular occasion when he managed to smuggle The Beatles out of a BBC studio and into a van, outwitting the marauding fans! Above: Gary Beck was It was when Gary swopped the high life totally taken by surprise he was presented of London for the supposedly sedate pace of when with The Calies Calendar Ambassador award. life in Devon that he started to really shake Right: Laurence was all things up on the business front. Initially it smiles at The Calies. was on the product front, through founding Otter House and producing products for the nation’s many pet lovers, which led to Carousel Calendars and being heavily involved in the formation of The Great Big Calendar Collection, forging links with other publishers to create the mega calendar distribution network. However it was a fortuitous meeting with the owner of US Calendar Club that ignited an idea to replicate its success in the UK. This they did, growing the business from 12 stores in 1998 to 305 stores at its peak.
