Excellence in Housewares Awards 2017

Inset: Last year’s winners with PH’s Jo Howard and Emma Cain with host Tommy Sandhu. Who will take to the stage with their trophies tonight?

BOnsOir nOs amis and wElcOmE The Parisian theme for this year’s awards is highly appropriate for the housewares industry. After all, Paris is a capital of style, of passion, where classical architecture as well as uber modern structures are revered. The city of romance is of course the home of Escoffier, who many consider to be the founder of fine cuisine, where many Michelin stars first gained their reputation and where even the preparation of an omelette or a crepe has become akin to a fine art! And talking of fine art, this is where millions flock to see the great Impressionists’ masterpieces that hang in the Musee D’Orsay. But just as without the paints and the canvasses Monet’s masterpieces would only have existed in his head, so the culinary creations of today’s chefs (whether celebrated or like us) would never make it to the table without the ‘tools of the trade’ and the places from which to procure them. By constantly pushing the boundaries in product innovation and creating retail excitement, both suppliers and retailers are keeping the glorious tradition of preparing and serving food a veritable ‘Arc de Triomphe’ which is where the Excellence in Housewares Awards come in! Playing a prominent role in the industry’s evolution in all of this has been our co-hosts, the British Independent Retailer Association (bira). This visionary trade association has been side by side with us at PH ever since the first Excellence in Housewares Awards launched 17 years ago, when we both undertook to build on the CHA Retailer of the Year award with an awards programme that championed excellence across both retailing and products in the housewares industry. Together with our loyal and supportive sponsors, the Excellence in Housewares Awards Inset: The Lionels, who will be cooking up some would not have gone on to become ‘la crème de la crème’ accolades. great tunes later. And that, as we in the UK may say is a jolly good spiffing reason to celebrate, our esprit de corps with a night that is full of ‘joie de vivre’. Awards Sacre Coeur! Well Bake(r)ed Ideas!

Inset: Charlie Baker, our host for tonight.

With a surname like his, it was an extra endorsement that Charlie Baker was the ideal host for the Excellence in Housewares Awards! Charlie’s instant likeability and charming delivery style has earned him a reputation as a modern showman. A popular face on TV panel shows (Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Short History of Everything, and The Comedy Store, for starters), Charlie’s acclaimed show, Baker’s Dozen had a sell-out show at the Edinburgh Festival this year and he is currently mid-way through his touring show. After Charlie has hosted the awards ceremony he hands over to musical maestros, The Lionels, the musically accomplished band whose tight set will get your on the dancefloor and enjoy it!

Arriving at the product finalists Suppliers submit their most innovative products (launched at retail between June 2016 and June 2017), including some nominated by any housewares stockist. New products, ranges, modifications and extensions to existing ranges are eligible. Entry is free of charge and all product entries gain the attention of a prestigious judging panel, which draw on their expertise of the industry. The Product Judging Day brings together almost 30 respected and proactive retail buyers from across the housewares retail spectrum. Judging criteria include product innovation and design excellence, quality of manufacture and presentation, and sales record or sales potential. Judges scrutinise, handle and discuss product entries, category by category. They fill out a Above: The confidential ballot form, selecting their top six entries for each award. Determining the retailer finalists PH conducts an industrywide poll whereby suppliers vote for those retailers who have excelled in the past year. Suppliers’ votes draw on the ‘frontline’ knowledge of their sales teams. Retailers are also invited to self-nominate themselves for the Excellence in Retailer Initiative Award, Excellence in Retail Display Awards and the Retail Employee of the Year (putting forward their ‘star’ members of staff.) PH invites all retailers nominated for the Excellence in Retail Display Above: The members of the panel with the PH team, at the Awards to submit photographs of their best displays. Retail Judging and Validation PH researches nominated initiatives, and checks eligibility of those Day, which took place at The nominated for the Most Promising Newcomer Award. Grosvenor House Hotel. The Retail Validation and Judging Panel comprises supplier representatives, with wide ranging collective experience of our industry. The Panel meets to validate the results of the supplier poll. Two extra rewards This year’s Excellence in Housewares Awards night sees the presentation of an additional prestigious award for retailers - the global accolade of gia UK winner. For the past 13 years, The Excellence in Housewares Awards has been linked with gia: the Global Innovation Awards programme, globally sponsored by the International Housewares Association (IHA) and the International Home + Housewares Show (IH+HS), with PH as UK sponsor. One Excellence in Housewares Awards 2017 retail winner will become the UK gia winner for 2017/2018. The winner will fly out to Chicago to represent the UK at the international gia gala during the IH+HS (March 10-13). The show itself features an exhibit of gia winners, recognising global retail excellence. At the gia gala, around 25 national gia winners compete for the coveted titles of Global Honoree, announced at the gia gala. Those that have achieved the title of Global Honorees retain this for life, and may not be a national winner again. The UK’s Global Honorees include Selfridges, Bentalls, Steamer Trading, Lakeland, John Lewis, Lords and Borough Kitchen. See www.housewares.org/gia". In addition, faciltated by bira, another award, The Oxford Summer School Award will be given to an exceptional retailer that the validation panel agreed deserving of the investment in their career. The Oxford Summer School has been transforming the careers of retail professionals from their first steps in retail management right through to board level since 1923. Many of the top retail leaders attribute their success in part to their OSS experience. The winner will access the highest quality specialised retail management training, designed by retailers for retailers, with a value up to £3,250. This covetable prize will inspire new ways of thinking and working and have a positive impact on the business. The Oxford Summer School programme portfolio includes the Foundation, Academy and Masters, plus specialist programmes including Digital Influence – Transforming Retail and new Retail Property Programme.

RETAIL EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Criteria: Nominations were sought for retail employees who make a difference, with their enthusiastic, attentive and knowledgeable service (and who could be considered ‘the unsung heroes’ of the shop floor or customer services team.)

l ROB FALCONER

l ALISON HOBBS

l MAUREEN HOOKER

Buyer of Steamer Trading

Visual merchandiser of Potters Cookshop, Hockley

Retail sales manager of Bakers and Larners of Holt

“Alison joined Potters in September 2013. I used to deal with her when she worked at an electrical distributors, so I knew that she was great working in sales. Alison is a trained window dresser and has created such fantastic windows for us, customers come to see us just to see the amazing displays that she has created, Alison’s skills are excellent and we fully appreciate them, but she never ceases to amaze me when she comes into work, always cheerful, enthusiastic, full of ideas – qualities which are priceless and a credit to her professionalism.”

“Since joining Bakers and Larners 23 years ago, Maureen has risen through the company and has excelled in her successive roles throughout the store. Her position today is as retail sales manager, which she has held for the past 16 years. Her enthusiasm, teamwork ethos, combined with her detailed product knowledge and keen awareness of market trends has seen Maureen’s Cookshop department rise to become one of Bakers and Larners’ top performing departments. Such attributes have seen Maureen and her team win countless national awards.”

“Rob joined Steamer Trading in November 2015, following a 15-year career at Selfridges, where he’d had experience across Cookshop, Home Accessories, Christmas, Bed and Bath and Stationery. Rob started at a time of great change within Steamer Trading – with our longstanding buyer Priti moving on to pastures new, Alison, his director, falling ill, and a whole new merchandising team being built up around him. Despite these challenges, Rob thrived in what was, after all, his first full buying role. He moved from London to Brighton to be closer to work and his new colleagues, and fully embraced the family culture of the Steamer offices.”

l LESLEY MURRAY

l NICK TIMMINS

l MARY WALLACE

Housewares manager of Highland Industrial Supplies, Inverness

Concession manager of Admiral, Walsall

Supervisor of the Cook Shop at Rejects, Kirkcaldy

“Lesley Murray, our housewares manager has been with the company for 23 years. She has been a very loyal and extremely hard working member of staff. Lesley goes way past her remit to give the customer a 100% satisfaction by sharing her vast knowledge, giving advice and a great service in her department. Testament to all this, she receives many lovely compliments, and we frequently have customers dropping off flowers and gifts for Lesley.”

“Nick started working for Admiral Housewares in 2013 as a part-time warehouse assistant. During the following three years he showed extensive leadership qualities over and above his role. Over time these qualities were recognised and resulted in his promotion to concession manager in 2016. The management of Admiral believe in promoting from within and having someone who understands all key aspects of the business is, we believe, key to the future growth of the business.. His people skills, enthusiasm and ability to drive the business forward makes him a very worthy candidate for Retail Employee of the Year.”

“Mary has worked here for the past 14 years, working her way up through the department from assistant to department supervisor. She is very committed to her job, working tirelessly to keep the department new and interesting. She works extremely well with her team, involving them in all aspects of the department and she has an exceptionally professional manner with the suppliers. Her product knowledge is excellent, understanding exactly what the customers are after, which enables fantastic customer service. In her spare time she undertakes comparative shopping making sure the customers get the best price they can.”

l KERRY’S HOME FURNISHINGS

l LUXE COOKSHOP

Melton Mowbray

Lowestoft

Northampton

“We opened a gift shop in Melton Mowbray in 2010 and the shop has done really quite well. Then we thought that considering Melton Mowbray is known as the ‘Rural Capital of Food’ and the home of the pork pie and Stilton cheese, there really should be a Cookshop! So we found a suitable shop close to the gift shop and in February 2016 Jupes Cookshop was open for business.”

"Kerry's Home Furnishings opened in 2016 in the heart of Lowestoft. We supply an extensive range of the finest furniture, linens and appliances as well as collections from big name brands like Kilner and KitchenAid. We also offer bespoke services, such as kitchen, flooring and blinds and curtain fitting - we also have our own traditionally styled tearoom in store ."

“Luxe Cookshop is a family-run business in the heart of Northampton. Having opened two years ago the business has grown not only in size, but also in product range with a brand new giftware section. As a family we take part in many food shows across the county and are looking forward to more in-store demonstrations.”

l RYE COOKSHOP

l WOODEN SPOON

“After 2½ years Prep is now an established destination in Stoke Newington, with a loyal local customer base that has a strong community focus. At Christmas we had late night shopping evenings, at Halloween our usual 'Best costume' competition in the Halloween trail along the street. We have joined Trouva and over the last year have been growing our online sales and presence.”

“Rye Cookshop opened its doors in September 2016 and has quickly become Rye’s ‘go-to’ destination for all things cookware, glassware, ovenware, kitchenware, taleware and clever gadgetry for cooking enthusiasts of all levels. Rye Cookshop has undertaken a full refurbishment with handmade shelving, counter, display units and shop sign, which all add to this great shopping experience.”

COOKSHOP Leek “The Wooden Spoon Cookshop in Leek first opened its doors on September 2016. We had a great opening event, during which the shop was officially opened by the Mayor, and the Town Crier. Since then, we have been finding our feet in the business, and getting to know the other independent shopkeepers in our local town.“

“As a store, we have had great success with beauty gift bags helping to increase minimum spends and boost sales. By using this mechanic in our Home departments we felt we could generate some additional turnover. We ran the offer in September last year, in line with the start of our Home Event and the official launch of the store’s new Home layout. Customers received the bag, worth £100, when they spent £200 or more across the cook, dine or electrical departments.”

“We launched our first in-house magazine Kitchen in September 2016 with two subsequent editions following over the festive period and early spring. We didn’t want it to be ‘just another catalogue’, it needed to be interesting, informative, immersive and useful. Something that people want to read from cover to cover. Part blog, part lifestyle magazine, we think Kitchen ticks all the boxes.”

“The Hut Living magazine has been a key marketing asset for the Spring/Summer season, embodying the depth and breadth of the new collections across TheHut.com. Since we launched the magazine in early April, the digital magazine has received over 30,000 readers, with an additional 2,500 printed copies sent out to key influencers and press.”

Units in the shop are rolled back and an atmospheric space is created using 1930s trestle tables and lighting (plus lots more original presentation ideas). We have had three events so far with another planned.”

“The newly expanded Potters Cookshop, Hockley re-launched with a whole week of celebratory activity. It featured demonstrations by Jeremy Pang from The School of Wok (with his range from Dexam) as well as Denby and Sage and culminated on Easter Saturday when Bake Off winner Candice Brown spent four hours in the shop, making her own recipes. With offers and competitions running throughout the week, Potters reported ‘Christmas takings’.”

“In 2016 Divertimenti was taken on by the award-winning Steamer Trading Cookshop, who set out to restore the Divertimenti brand, and the Cookery School to its position as the leading culinary destination. The school relaunched in Novemebr 2016 to great acclaim from teachers and students alike. A particular highlight of the launch programme was a fantastic Chef’s Table event hosted by Michelin starred Tom Kerridge and Claude Bosi, cooking together for a united audience.”

Celebrating with Excellence in Housewares

Welcome to all UK home and housewares professionals to the 2018 International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago, 10 -13 March! Hear what your colleagues have to say about the Show… Visiting the Housewares Show in Chicago is a great opportunity to look out for emerging trends and new product innovation. It’s also a great opportunity to visit the city and explore the food and cooking trends that are emerging. Clare Sprigings Buyer – Home Selfridges & Co

The International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago is always one of the most inspiring fairs that we visit. Increasingly international, there is a real sense of welcome for overseas buyers – the IHA works harder than any other show to achieve this. We find a lot of innovation, interesting design and brands that we haven’t seen at the European shows. The opportunity to visit the U.S. retailers and see class-leading merchandising is also time well spent. Ben Phillips Managing Director Steamer Trading

The International Home + Housewares Show is the perfect platform for European brands trying to reach the breadth of the US market. For Joseph Joseph, winning the IHA award put us in front of an audience of international retailers, which has been hugely beneficial. Antony Joseph Joseph Joseph

The Chicago Show is the key show in my calendar. It has a combination of amazing innovation and quality suppliers. We always find new and differentiated product and innovative ways to display and showcase it. The organisation is excellent, and the ability to visit quality retailers in Chicago is an added benefit. We are selective on the number of shows we go to - but this is a must! Anna Berry Head of Buying – Cooking & Dining John Lewis Plc
