Excellence In Housewares Awards 2024

Page 1

WELCOME

The competition this year has been fierce with some incredible entries across all categories, so we’d like to start by thanking all of you for getting behind these awards, bringing your best products, services and outlets to the table and making the judges’ decisions so difficult.

Without your hard work, we couldn’t make these awards what they are, so thank you for doing what you do and for putting that forward for recognition. Whether or not you leave with a trophy today, you’re all winners in this wonderful industry.

This evening, we celebrate those products which make lives easier in homes across the world, which solve problems, answer questions and make home life comfortable, as well as those which have become icons over the years. We also commend companies which support their customers with impactful marketing, excellent service and stand-out product development.

In

We honour retailers across the board, from the smallest independents, to the largest multiples, who make it their mission to provide first-class service, who present products in attention grabbing, memorable ways, who train their staff to be the very best and who support their customers.

And finally, we applaud a select few individuals who have made outstanding achievements throughout their careers in housewares. We can’t wait for this evening’s event and to find out who has been awarded with the Excellence in Housewares honours this year.

We would like to extend a huge thanks to our sponsors this year. Tonight would simply not be possible without you all.

As part of our collaboration with gia (Global Innovation Awards), which are organised by the International Housewares Association (IHA) and The Inspired Home Show, one retailer will this evening win a wonderful trip to Chicago to represent the

Welcome everyone to the 25th annual Excellence in Housewares Awards this evening. It’s an honour for Progressive Housewares to be able to invite you all to come together to celebrate the housewares industry as a whole and join you in taking a moment to reflect on another successful year.

UK in the international celebration of housewares retailers.

We’re thrilled to be joined this evening by industry association, BHETA, as well as our wonderful industry charity, The Rainy Day Trust. Thanks also go to all those who have kindly donated raffle prizes, the proceeds of which will go to support The Rainy Day Trust and the licensing industry charity, The Light Fund.

This is the third time I’ve been lucky enough to help organise these awards and it has fast become one of my most favourite nights of the year. Our industry is warm, friendly, welcoming and supportive and I’m hugely looking forward to celebrating with you all tonight. Have an amazing evening.

CASTING THE VOTES… DISCUSSION AND DEMOCRACY

Entry is totally free of charge across all categories, giving an even playing field for suppliers and retailers to nominate and be nominated with no barrier to entry. Split into three key areas: product categories –based on new or updated product in the 12 months from June 2023 to June 2024; the retail categories, again based upon retailers’ activities over that 12-month period; through to the special awards across marketing, product development and service. Plus, of course, the outstanding achievement award, based upon the strength of nominations and judged on individual merit.

The Product Judging

Utilising online technology, allowing for greater entry and a wider spread of judges who are not limited by geography, the online portal once again saw a superb quality of entry. The volume of out-and-out new product was slightly down on last year, reflective of

the current market clearing itself since a slower 2023 than some anticipated, but with a higher focus on existing ranges being significantly enhanced, while the new product that was entered was more notable to the judges. Products are judged by retail buyers. They are, after all, the experts being at the frontline each and every day. This year’s panel included parties from John Lewis, Tesco, Harrods, Next, TK Maxx, Robert Dyas, Harts of Stur, Salamander Cookshop, Potters Cookshop, Divertimenti, Currys, Lawsons, Morleys, Garsons, Trevor Mottram, Borough Kitchen, Aldiss, as well as a full slate of specialist independent retailers from across the country. Being honoured means a great deal to suppliers who work so hard to offer retail the best products. Craig Sammells, country manager UK & Ireland, Orthex Group, told

Exposé Travel – Your one-stop shop for all Housewares exhibitions worldwide.

EXPOSÉ TRAVEL specialises in travel to housewares and related shows worldwide. We have been offering some very special rates for flights and hotels to the many exhibitions that take place in different parts of the world and work with small boutique housewares suppliers and retailers right up to the biggest companies on the show floor. We are also the exclusive travel partner to the Max Group of Companies, owners of The Excellence In Housewares Awards, Progressive Housewares, and HousewaresNews.net.

Dear Friends and Clients,

First and foremost, may I wish all of tonight’s awards nominees the very best of luck! Your commitment to excellent housewares product, retail and service truly is outstanding.

As the industry’s specialist travel agent, you may have my services in the past, or I may not be known to you – in which case I would love to connect.

I am also the official travel agent for the Inspired Home Show, Chicago – and proud to be so. We are always on hand to help with your housewares sector travel needs and by working with us as an industry specialist, we’re on hand –directly – to help with delays, changes of plans, cancellations and more – we love problem solving whether it’s in Chicago, Frankfurt – or anywhere else. No call centres to battle with when you’re already doing such a busy job.

And that is why now, more than ever, I encourage you to use our services as a housewares industry specialist.

Exposé can be your one-stop-shop for flights and hotels (plus everything in-between) and you will know that you can speak to me at any time, any

day - if there are fresh travel problems - you won’t be on hold to a call centre to try and unravel bookings and fight for refunds for months on end.

You will speak to me, and I will be your personal point of contact.

You’ll also be talking to a man who visits the same shows – Ambiente, Exclusively, Inspired Home Show, Hong Kong and more – so I really do know about the best hotels and routes – I’ve walked those walks.

Again, my best wishes to all nominees and indeed the industry as a whole. We deal with one-man companies right up to 100+ person bookings for the biggest housewares suppliers and retailers.

And, if I can keep Rob Willis happy with his demanding travel requirements, I’m sure I can help you!

Sincerely

Paul Vasdev: +44(0)1883 349576 paul@exposetravel.uk www.exposetravel.uk

HousewaresNews.net: “We’re thrilled to be a finalist in the Excellence in Home Organisation category this year with the addition to our SmartStore Collect recycled plastic range, the Biowaste bin. That was really well received at Ambiente and again at Exclusively Housewares, so it’s great it has got this recognition now too.”

The Icon Award

The Retail Categories

The retail categories are open for both selfnomination from retailers, or nomination from suppliers. Progressive Housewares canvasses extensively for these votes over several months, culminating in over 200 nominations across all categories, with over 500 individual votes across the slate.

Samantha Turner for Le Creuset, Sarah Phillips for Nivtar, Seema Grantham for BHETA, and Simon Oliver for RKW/Tower.

This special award is judged by the aforementioned slate of retailers, before going to a secondary panel of highly experienced housewares buyers whose tenure exceeds a combined total of over 200 years. This award, as such, really remains iconic given the strength the product in question must possess in order to receive recognition from industry stalwarts who will not be swayed.

Equally, being recognised in this category means everything to the finalists, as testified by Gareth Till, country manager for Bodum, who said: “It’s been quite a year for Bodum as we celebrate our 80th anniversary and reinvigorate our presence in the UK – and what better way to do that than be a finalist with one of our iconic products, the Chambord.”

From there, an organic shortlist forms, is published to the industry, before a highprofile judging panel assembles to decide the winners of each category by way of debate and democracy.

The panel was chaired by Progressive Housewares publisher Rob Willis (who does not vote), with the formal committee comprising of: Brian Walmsley for EKO Home, Chris Gee for Peugeot UK, Chris Lohmeyer for DKB Toys & Distribution, Claire Budgen for Lifetime Brands, Jenny Stewart for Ultimate Products, Laura Starkie for Meyer Group, Mohamed Hajat for Burton McCall, Raven Sprague for Pure Table Top,

Retailers were overjoyed upon receiving the news of their finalist’s position, including Margaret Osei-Bonsu, buyer for Harrods, who said: “We’re delighted to hear we are finalist for this year’s Excellence In Housewares Awards. We have worked really hard to create the best retail experience for our consumers.”

Independent retailers often find the news overwhelming, as our unsung heroes of the high street, as confirmed by Sophie Bensley of Cooks Galley in Abergavenny, who told HousewaresNews.net: “Wow - just wow, it really is a pinch me moment. It means so much to have been nominated - let alone make it as a finalist.

“As a small, family run business, it is so wonderful to be recognised. We are a small team here, so the thought of having a national award is just magical.”

Our thanks go to…

A FANTASTIC CHARITY RAFFLE

£20 for 6 tickets or £10 for 3 tickets

The Light Fund, set up in 2004, is an industry-wide registered charity for the housewares, greetings, licensing and gifts sectors. It is run on a voluntary basis by those in the industry.

Since its inception, The Light Fund has raised over £2 million and funded well over 200 charity projects helping men, women and children less fortunate than ourselves, all over the world.

The Rainy Day Trust is the only charity which exists solely to help hundreds of people who work or have worked in the UK’s housewares and home improvement industry.

It needs our help to reach over 30% more beneficiaries this year. This winter, the Trust will be providing lifelines with its winter fuel packages.

We have a long established relationship with Nishant and his team dating back to the origins of his family run business in retail. They are a great team to collaborate with and we look forward to continuing our work with them on future projects.

Nishant and his team have proven to be a wise partner choice. Small enough to care, look after our needs and ensure our products arrive on time, in good condition, at the right price. Large enough to manage and assist in our aggressive development plans, ensuring we don’t need to look elsewhere in the future.
