This Month It was a scenario everyone feared. As Omicron rapidly spread in the week before Christmas, with high streets and city centres empty once again at the most crucial period for retail, it was, of course, disappointing news for retailers across the board. But was it all doom and gloom? Thankfully, far from it. We asked gift retailers up and down the country for the lowdown behind the headlines. Turn to pages 15-17. Meanwhile, amid all the uncertainty that continues to permeate our everyday lives, one thing we can be certain of is that The Greats Awards 2022 are well and truly underway, with the cream of gift retail recognised and rewarded at the first ever The Gift Awards, taking place at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel on May 12, where the winners of the Gift of the Year Awards will also be revealed in a joint awards ceremony. The closing date for Greats entries is January 31, 2022, with a downloadable entry form available on www.thegreatsawards.co.uk. Alternatively, entries can be emailed directly to me at suem@maxpublishing.co.uk. We know that there are lots of exceptional gift retailers out there and we want to hear from you! Elsewhere in this issue, we take a look at some of the exciting new launches at Spring Fair, (turn to pages 25-27), and have a face to face chat with the show’s event director Simon Lau (turn to page 29). We also hear from suppliers on how societal changes are impacting on products and product choices (turn to pages 19-21), as well as celebrating three special anniversaries: Candlelight’s 50th, (turn to pages 34-35), Peter Rabbit’s 120th birthday (turn to pages 52-53) and gift shop William of Audlem’s 160th anniversary (turn to pages 42-43). Plus, we take a look at what’s trending for Mother’s Day, the second biggest gift giving occasion after Christmas (turn to pages 36-39), along with home fragrancing (turn to pages 45-49); jewellery and fashion accessories (turn to pages 55-57) and preschool and children’s gifting (turn to pages 61-63). We also asked six leading companies what challenges lie ahead in 2022 (turn to pages 1213). But first, catch up with all the latest news and views on pages 5-11. Looking forward to seeing you all at Spring Fair!

Last Chance To Enter The Greats Awards! Closing Date For Entries Is 31 January
Gift Retailer ‘An Inspiration’
With a closing date of 31January 2022, entries have been arriving thick and fast for The Greats Gift Retailer Awards 2022 which set out to recognise and reward the crème de la crème of the UK’s amazing gift shops and gift departments. “With the competition now in its 20th milestone year, we want retailers to tell us why their shop could be a winner!” says Sue Marks, editor of Progressive Gifts & Home/GiftsandHome.net which organises the awards.
Jenny Blyth, who founded bespoke gift subscription service Storm in a Teacup Gifts in 2014, has been named as one of the UK’s most inspirational and dynamic female entrepreneurs by the f:Entrepreneur ‘#ialso100’ campaign. “Although we are predominately online we do pop up shops and all the events we can,” confirmed Jenny. “We love to be visible in the community.” Jenny is being profiled alongside 100 female entrepreneurs from across the country as part of the campaign to celebrate the multiachievements of women running businesses in the UK today. Now in its fifth year, the growing campaign attracted a record number of applications for this year’s ‘#ialso100’ line-up. “I’m thrilled and honoured to be included in this list alongside all these phenomenal women,” enthused Jenny. “My hope is to use this campaign to further our work in the community and, in particular, better mental health care.” Jenny was also singled out for her online community group, her commitment to work with other small businesses and her campaign for better mental health care for those both in and out of the small business sector.
A downloadable entry form is available from www.thegreatsawards.co.uk. Alternatively, entries can be emailed direct to suem@maxpublishing.co.uk. Uniting the gift industry, The Greats gift retailer awards have joined forces with The Giftware Association’s Gift of the Year (GOTY) awards, with all winners - both The Greats and the GOTY - revealed at a fabulous black tie awards event, to be held at the glamorous Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on Thursday May 12. “Winning a Greats Gift Retailer award has become the pinnacle for gift retailers both large
and small - a prestigious, coveted retail trophy that recognises excellence, initiative, innovation and professionalism at the highest level,” continues Sue. “Therefore, once again, we’re on the lookout for those extra special gift retailers, gift departments, lifestyle stores, garden centres and visitor attractions that, despite a challenging, changing retail climate, are nevertheless managing to stay at the top of their game. The Greats are a fantastic opportunity for gift retailers right across the board - from the tiniest village shop to the largest multiple - to bang the drum about their achievements over the past year. We know that there are some incredible retailers out there, and we want to hear from them!” Tickets to the awards can be booked quickly and securely by visiting www.maxsubscriptions.net/tickets/or by contacting awards organiser Clare Hollick at clare@createvents.co.uk (tel: 01183 340085). Tickets cost £208 (+VAT) and tables of 10 and 12 are available. Showstopping Spring Fair Safety Is Paramount Say Organisers With the industry gearing up for the first in person Spring Fair in two years, (6-9 February, NEC, Birmingham), the organisers are looking forward to safely welcoming visitors. “What 2021 has highlighted is the importance of reliability and retailers being able to see and touch what they are buying. Spring Fair has been a vital cog in the retail supply chain for sourcing products and reinforcing those face-to-face relationships for many years and in 2022 it is vitally important for our industry that Spring Fair opens its doors to allow retailers to restock and buy for the year ahead,” states Hyve Group’s Julie Driscoll, divisional managing director for Retail, Engineering and Manufacturing. The Giftware Association’s ceo Sarah Ward concurs. “The entire retail industry has learned so

much from the pandemic, particularly the need and desire for in-person business and buying. Spring Fair is crucial for the future of the giftware industry, not just to source products but also to facilitate and build relationships, to forge new partnerships, and to discover and drive innovation and inspiration.” Meanwhile, health & safety at the show is being taken very seriously. Anyone entering the NEC venue at Spring Fair - including those during build-up and breakdown - will need to show their valid Covid-19 pass, or a negative result to a lateral flow test taken within 48 hours. In addition, aligned to Government guidelines, all attendees will have to wear a face covering during the show. Messe Frankfurt, organisers of Ambiente, Christmasworld, Paperworld and Creativeworld, has confirmed that due to the pandemic situation worldwide, and tightened travel and contact regulations, the shows, that were due to take place in January and February, have been cancelled. "This decision was anything but easy for us,” confirmed Detlef Braun, member of the executive board of Messe Frankfurt. However, the shows have not been postponed to a later a later date in 2022,
with Detlef explaining: “since the trendoriented order cycles of the international consumer goods industry require an annual event at the beginning of the year, a shift to the second half of the year would not meet the needs of the exhibiting companies and visitors." Plans for 2023 will be announced at the beginning of February. Meanwhile, Messe Frankfurt has been actively helping retailers with Nextrade and Conzoom Solutions, an information platform for the global consumer goods sector. Above: Ambiente has been postponed until 2023.
Top Drawer Postponed Postponed by just over a month, (due to the uncertainty of the Omicron variant before Christmas), Top Drawer Spring is going ahead on 20-22 February 2022. “We are committed to bringing visitors Top Drawer SS22 in a safe environment that they can feel comfortable attending,” states show director Russell Rule of Clarion Retail, which owns and organises Top Drawer. “With this in mind, we felt it was the right decision to postpone to a later date in the same buying season, and we believe that a safe and successful event can be run in late February 2022.” Two other January shows have also been postponed. The January Furniture Show, due to take place from 24-27 January, has been moved to 24-27 April, with all visitor registration automatically transferred to the new dates. In addition, following the introduction of new Scottish restrictions for events, Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring/Scotland’s Speciality Food Show has been postponed until 27-29 March, with the majority of exhibitors expected to participate as usual. While disappointing for both suppliers and retailers, organisers Springboard say it is the sensible and safe route to take, still allowing retailers enough time to source new products for the 2022 season. Explains Mark Saunders, director, Scotland’s Trade Fair: “as Q1 buying patterns are going to be uncertain we feel a postponement is helpful to the trade, not least in providing a better trading environment but also a much safer one giving buyers confidence to attend.” Visit www.topdrawer.co.uk; www.januaryfurnitureshow.com; www.spring.scotlandstradefairs.co.uk Left: Top Drawer’s show director Russell Rule.
Date Change For Delhi Gift Show Due to Omicron, the Spring edition of IHGF Delhi Fair has been rescheduled and will now take place from 30 March - 3 April at the India Expo Centre & Mart, Delhi NCR. The show’s key sectors include gift, home, lifestyle, fashion and fashion accessories, jewellery, housewares, garden, outdoor and festive. GOTY Shortlist Announced Judges Faced With Some Tough Decisions The shortlist for this year’s Gift of the Year (GOTY) competition, organised by The Giftware Association, has been announced and can be viewed on the Gift of the Year website. Visit www.giftoftheyear.co.uk “The aim was to always grow the competition and really show off some of the fantastic products that have been created during lockdown,” explained the GA’s marketing & PR manager Chris Workman. Continued Chris: “this year’s shortlist reflected all the hard work and innovativeness from our industry, work that has been going on behind closed doors, with staff shortages and lockdowns. With so many great entries, the judges had a tough time in choosing the finalists.”
Chris highlighted that the shortlist, as in previous years, is larger to allow for more celebration of the judges’ favourite products, as well as reflecting some larger than usual categories, with extra judges asked to tie break. A second round live judging will be taking place at Spring Fair on February 9, with the winners announced at The Gift Awards taking place on May 12 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, alongside The Greats Awards. This year’s Gift of the Year judging panel once again included Sue Marks, editor of Progressive Gifts & Home/GiftsandHome.net Left: Among the GOTY judges is PG&H’s editor Sue Marks.

NEWS Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature
Opening on 12 February, and tying in with Peter Rabbit’s 120th birthday year, Beatrix Potter: Drawn To Nature is a new exhibition opening at London’s V&A. Celebrating the life and work of one of the best-loved children’s authors of the 20th century, and in collaboration with the National Trust, the exhibition will be taking visitors on a journey to discover Beatrix’s life as a scientist and conservationist, exploring the places and animals that inspired her most loved characters. June Date For Sustainability Conference The first in person Sustainability in Licensing Conference (SILC) will be taking place at the Royal Geographical Society on 22 June, with the event open to companies across all sectors, to include gifts and home suppliers. With more and more gift and home companies putting sustainability high on the agenda in 2022, insightful research from The Insights Family has found that ‘purpose first’ is becoming a key factor for parents when buying products for their children, which could see companies switch their marketing strategies to better convey their sustainability credentials. (See Child’s Play on pages 61-63).
Sustainable Easter Gifts With seeded paper currently a huge trend, Easter gifting is very much a focus for Plant A Bloomer. Last year, the company’s Spring Plantable Tokens letterbox gifts, featuring seed paper Easter eggs, bunnies and butterflies, became an instant hit after being recommended on This Morning’s Easter gift guide, leading them to sell out within minutes, with the range available to purchase again this year. “For each unit sold, we will be donating £1 to the Adopt an Acre Appeal, to raise £500 to adopt a protected wildflower meadow, in partnership with charity Plantlife,” confirms Plant A Bloomer’s founder Rani Deshpande. “We hope to reach our target by the summer.” The company will also be launching a brand new addition to the range this Spring, the Grown Your Own Veg Plantable Tokens sack. “Building on the lockdown craze for gardening, and encouraging healthy eating, this product features carrot, lettuce and radish shaped seed paper tokens, presented in a mini hessian sack with a gingham label.” Explains Rani: “Little ones can plant their tokens to grow their own salad patch, and even for those without a garden, they can be grown indoors in a plant pot placed on a windowsill, making this a suitable gift for all children.” (See Child’s Play on pages 61-63). Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards 2022 Back in its usual Spring slot for 2022, this year’s Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards (B&LLA’s) will take place on Wednesday 27 April at the Hilton, Park Lane. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 8 March. Visit www.brandlicensing.eu

Bira Launches Neartoo Trading Platform Gift Indies Love One and Papyrus Sign Up February will see the launch of Neartoo, a new online trading platform exclusively for independent retailers, to include gift retailers, created by Bira (the British Independent Retailers’ Association). Using Neartoo, shop owners are able to sync their existing online sales platform or create an ecommerce presence for the first time, with gift retailers Love One in Ipswich and Papyrus in Glasgow among those that have signed up. “The pandemic has accelerated shopping behaviours, with more use of the internet and people also shopping more locally,” commented Bira’s ceo Andrew Goodacre. "This platform, owned by independents, addresses both of those societal changes, and will allow these retailers to open up new ways of selling to customers, and more profitably.” He explained: "This is a really exciting opportunity for indies throughout the UK to be
able to start selling online or increase their own visibility. It will get their products out to a wider audience and is the answer for thousands of indie stores across the UK to still maintain a bricks and mortar presence on the high street, while also allowing them to sell online but at a lower cost.” The Association is urging all independent retailers to sign up, regardless of whether they are Bira members, with Neartoo complementing physical stores, helping independent retailers to move forward with a ‘hybrid’ model of retailing. For Bira members, the use of the platform is free for 12 months, while nonBira members can get five months free when they sign up. The UK-wide platform will operate at a significantly lower sales commission than its competitors, with time-saving benefits such as one-click product uploads. Visit Neartoo.co.uk

As part of this strategy, we are moving to new offices and changing to third party warehousing. To ensure our independent customers receive the same level of support and service they have always enjoyed we wanted a distribution partner to supply Xpressions direct to independent retail. Joe Davies is a perfect fit for the Xpressions range and our customers.” The collection will be on display on the Joe Davies stand (Hall 4; Stand 4C20-D21) at Spring Fair (6-9 February at the NEC, Birmingham). Industry Issue: Challenges In 2022
Rising To The As we go into 2022, what challenges will suppliers be facing over the next few months? PG&H asked six leading gift companies for their views.
Below: Peter Smith, Dunoon.
Container Price Issues
Post Brexit Challenges
“The supply chain remains a significant challenge,” says Scott Clarke, head of sales and operations at Rex London. “We adjusted to the longer lead time pretty efficiently by making small changes to our ordering process and have largely been able to keep up with demand. However, when you bring in a new product which proves to be a hit, and you run out before getting a chance to restock, it can be frustrating. Hopefully, as we progress through 2022, we will start to see a move back towards normality on the shipping front, particularly with regards to container prices which are having a major impact on overall costs.” Scott adds that the pandemic is still causing quite a bit of disruption and a seemingly nonstop changing of plans. “One of the trade shows we were planning to attend has been cancelled, and another postponed,” he points out. “Even the ones which are still due to go ahead have an air of uncertainty around them and it’s hard to predict how many people will visit. We hope to see as many customers as possible, but for those who can’t make it we have recently published a new catalogue showcasing our newest and best selling products. After stopping catalogues many years ago, we have found them to be of value once again, allowing us to connect with customers when travelling to shows isn’t an option. It’s all online these days though, so no trees have been cut down!” On a positive note, Scott says that the company expects to return to more normal trading conditions once winter is over, “and we very much hope this will mean a lot more stability for retailers. We could well see more pop-up style gift shops this year as new and existing businesses test demand at key times without having to fully commit to opening new stores. However, inflation and general economic uncertainty are not ideal, especially in the giftware industry, as people will undoubtedly be focusing on their core household expenses. “Nevertheless, we remain reasonably optimistic about the year ahead despite the challenges. With a strong product offering and competitive pricing there is still room for gifting, even in a difficult economy.”
“As a UK manufacturer sourcing from UK suppliers, obtaining raw materials has generally been fine,” confirms Dunoon’s sales director Peter Smith. “We had a period last year when our lithograph supplier experienced delays in obtaining gold colour, which meant we ran close to the wire on supplying patterns containing gold. We also ran tight on packaging materials, but this seems fine now. However, on the Brexit front, it’s not easy exporting to Europe but our shipping department has done a great job thankfully, finding the best way to supply our numerous European customers. Paperwork is immense and costs as a result have increased per shipment.” Looking ahead, Peter says that for 2022, it’s a little too soon to say how the new rules will affect Dunoon. “Now the rules have been relaxed on testing for entry into the UK we have seen an immediate uptake on ordering from our internationally tourist dependent customers. I also think we can expect an influx of overseas tourists this Spring/Summer.”

Cost Pressures “Our attitude for 2022 has to be ‘here’s hoping!’” says Gisela Graham’s sales director Piers Croke. “We’ve started the year well, with excellent sales of our brand new designs in our showroom - which opened early in December - with retailers reporting very good Christmas results. But, along with everyone in the gift trade Europewide, we’re facing cost pressures - sevenfold shipping costs from the Far East for a start. Even so, we’re keeping prices as tight as we can to support the trade. We’re experiencing supply chain problems too, with many suppliers specifying six months delivery time. With regards to exports, Brexit made them tricky in 2021, and we are braced for further difficulty in 2022 through additional red tape, especially with Germany where our sales were halved.” As for consumer confidence, Piers says that there’s a bit of a ‘wait and see’ feeling at the moment, which might improve as and when the pandemic recedes. “Pandemic-induced staycations last summer generated some good trade for gift shops and I’m willing to bet that, having rediscovered the joys of a British holiday, people will be coming back in 2022, to the benefit, once again, of the gift trade.” Above: Piers Croke, Gisela Graham.

Flexibility Is Key “2022 will continue to present both challenges as well as opportunities for suppliers,” says Denby’s global marketing director Hayley Baddiley. “While the unpredictability created by the ongoing pandemic creates planning and forecasting headaches, the accelerated change in consumer behaviours and priorities will reward those suppliers and brands able to respond and meet the needs of the consumer credibly and responsively.” Explains Hayley: “At Denby, the team has become adept at managing the ramifications of the pandemic, whether it be the unpredictability, planning for trade shows which may or may not be able to take place, the challenges of maintaining 'business as usual' in such unusual times with regards to staffing, supply and retail closures, or indeed, the opportunities it has presented for the gift and homewares sector. These include the forecasting for increased demand and interest, ensuring we optimise our omni-channel offer and continue to service our customers and markets in the UK and overseas. This unpredictability will undoubtedly continue for some time and so flexibility is key.” She adds that the pandemic has changed behaviours and priorities. “Given the amount of time we are all now spending in our homes, many of us are choosing to invest more in renovating and furnishing our homes or giving homeware as gifts. This is particularly true of brands and items which are made to last, as the pandemic has accelerated our desire for more sustainable, less 'disposable' living.” Above: Hayley Baddiley, Denby.
More Support For The High Street “The pandemic has made the last two years a very challenging time for manufacturers and retailers, due to the restrictions to movement across borders, locally and internationally,” comments Gift Republic’s managing director Sam Wahid. “There was also the domino effect causing port congestion, container shortages as well as driver shortages, which meant a high degree of strategy, time and resources had to be considered to get our products to market. This has certainly caused a dip in confidence across the board on the high street. However, the upside to this is that it has injected a lot more consumer confidence in online shopping like never before.” As for bricks and mortar, Sam adds: “customers are always looking for unique, fun and creative products that bring joy to their lives and we plan to continue to bring those to the high street. We hope that during 2022, customers will feel more confident about revisiting shops, as it is important to support our small independent retailers which play a vital role in the economy.” Right: Sam Wahid, Gift Republic.
Too Much Regulation “We’re trying hard to get on with our ‘day job’ of designing fun gifts and providing great customer service for our independents and third party D2C fulfilment service,” states Boxer Gifts’ managing director Thomas O’Brien. “We have to keep focused on what makes us special as a business while dealing with yet another rule.” He continues: “At Boxer Gifts, we certainly don’t enjoy the seemingly daily twists and turns of regulation and advice changes that we must deal with. I’ve personally been throwing insults at the government for not providing the stability business needs right now and killing consumer confidence. The majority of people I speak to no longer want restrictions or Covid rules - both with travel and their daily lives. We, as businesses, cannot easily change the rules, but we can change our own working environment - no masks or screens - following only the bare minimum we have to by law (not recommendations) which presents a relaxed and reassuring ‘back to normal’ for our team and our customers. “For small businesses like ours, the extra bureaucracy we have to deal with is a drain on our time. Shipping to our customers in the EU is more difficult than ever and imports from the Far East are delayed and expensive. All businesses are feeling the pinch with wage rises, which is not going away any time soon. There’s nothing easy about running a business, but that’s what makes the challenge worth it. Luckily for the gift trade, prices are rising and inevitably takings will increase, which hopefully allows us to stay in front of the rising cost of running a business.” Above: Thomas O’Brien, Boxer Gifts.

Christmas 2021
‘Twas The Week Before Christmas... With Omicron dominating the headlines during December, uncertainty circling about whether or not the government would bring in new restrictions, and data from retail analysts Springboard revealing that footfall was dramatically down on high streets and city centres, it was the news that no-one wanted to hear, least of all gift shops. With constant reminders about inflation, gas price hikes, an increase in the Bank rate as well as National Insurance contributions, a lot was riding on the final week of Christmas trading. So, was it a Christmas cracker or a Christmas turkey for gift stores?

Best Ever Christmas
Our Shelves Were (Almost) Stripped Bare
“We had our best year so far, so we couldn't be happier,” enthused Priya Aurora-Crowe, co-owner of seven Lark stores in London and the South. “The final week sales were a record for us. Local shoppers’ plans were changing on a daily basis for Christmas which increased the last minute present buying. Stand out product sectors were beauty and self-care.” Online sales too, soared. “We increased our online sales by such a huge amount that we had to bring forward our cut-off date as so many of our customers were isolating due to getting Covid that they used our online platform instead.” Lessons learned: “To over staff the shops due to the high frequency of staff members getting Covid. They literally dropped like flies!” Below: One of seven Lark stores.
“Christmas was great for us,” stated Bridie Wilkinson, marketing manager at Barkers and Barkers Home in Northallerton. “The final week of Christmas was still busy, with shoppers almost stripping our shelves bare! A lot of people shopped earlier just in case anything happened in December, so we were low on stock even before December. Stand out product sectors were gifts such as home fragrancing - Christmas candles and diffusers - as well as home accessories. In addition, Christmas gift food sold really well.” Lessons learned: “Unfortunately, until we get a crystal ball no one can predict what will happen! Our stock levels were just about right, although the product range was slightly reduced due to the uncertainty around Covid.” Above: Gift food and home accessories were among the Christmas

Final Week Was Buzzing
A Fantastic Christmas “The final week really was the icing on the cake with Monday through to Friday record days,” enthuses Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill & Bert’s in Colchester. “Omicron seemed to keep people closer to home for their shopping but there certainly wasn’t any slowing down on footfall. Food gifting, spice tins, Bake In, Cartwright & Butler and bottled baking were all fantastic sellers, as was Jellycat. Chilly’s bottles continued to be brilliant as were Roka bags. We started to build up stock from July through to November as there was obviously going to be issues on deliveries this year. Stand out suppliers were smaller British companies who would, in most cases - even in December - deliver in 48 hours, with a big shout out to the Spice Kitchen and Miss Sparrow.” Continued Bill: “Overall, Christmas was fantastic this year. Sales starting growing in September and kept growing and growing. We were recording best days and best weeks as we got closer to Christmas Day.” Lessons learned: “Believe in your shop, have great customer service and great staff. The public want to ‘shop local’ and independents will win the high street sales. Retail is thriving if done differently. No one gets a thank you online. You do though in a shop.”
“Overall, we were very pleased with Christmas,” confirmed Celia Leeson-Cox, visual merchandising manager at Yarnton Home & Gift. “Despite supply issues, which impacted on some of our Christmas product offer and space, we had our best Christmas ever!” Explained Celia: “We were aware that things may have been rather uncertain but found that trade was up, with strong early sales which was encouraging. These didn’t dip this year, and our final week in December was ‘buzzing’ and even Christmas Eve was busy with an increased spend, and our new Home & Gift’ department really coming into its own. Online sales were also up, so overall, really thrilled and relieved! Stand out sectors were decorative home accessories to include vases, plant pots, photo frames and, our most successful of all, Present Time’s cuckoo clock. We feature the clocks in store at the till points and our customers love them! Bath and body and food gifts also did very well.” Lessons learned: “We have continued to keep forward thinking and keep things simple. That way it isn’t too difficult to adapt.” Below: A Yarnton Home & Gift Christmas tree, dressed by Gisela Graham.

Best Christmas In 20 Years “Christmas was incredible, our best in 20 years,” says Sam Gibbs, owner of Nest in Stoneygate, Broughton Astley & Thurlaston Garden Centre. “It goes without saying it was tough going and hard work, long hours and non-stop, but to be expected, and very enjoyable along the way. We work so hard all year with the focus being Christmas, so the rewards are seeing all our hard work pay off, and we really didn't see a drop in footfall. Customers were respectful and followed the rules in place but were still definitely out shopping, and grateful to be doing so. Plus, this has been our strongest year online so far and the increases were greater than we could have hoped for, without compromising the shops.” Continued Sam: “Interestingly, we’ve found that our different platforms have different key areas. For example, fashion accessories in our shops had the quickest turnaround, particularly socks and gloves. However, this was different online, with scarves being an area with the bigger sales. Family entertainment was the other key growth area online, with escape rooms and board games being really strong sellers and puzzles just behind them. Meanwhile, our strongest brand both online and in the shops is Jellycat, and that didn't disappoint this Christmas.” Lessons learned: “Generally, we always ask for deliveries to be as early as possible, and always think they will arrive too early. I think the lesson learned in 2021 is that early is never too early!” Left: Nest’s festive window.

Christmas 2021
A Busy Christmas Week “Our sales were up week on week until Omicron took a hold in December,” said Janet Hartree, owner of Ewe & Me in Grantown-on-Spey. “Although footfall was noticeably lower on our high street the week before Christmas, Christmas week was busy with good sales. However, our online sales increased only slightly. We had ordered lots of wonderful, small different Christmas decorations and our customers loved them. Almost all our Christmas-themed decorations sold by the 24th. It seemed as though people wanted to make their homes especially bright and sparkly this Christmas.” Lessons learned: “We took the gamble to buy and put out stock early and were pleased we had taken stock in as soon as it was available. It was literally selling as we were putting it out, and we were busy re-ordering stock from August onwards. The lesson we learned was to ‘be prepared’. It worked for us.” Right: Ewe & Me in Grantown-on-Spey.
Spend Was Up “December was definitely a bit slower than last year footfall-wise, which was mainly due to all the messaging from the government about safeguarding Christmas,” comments David Lorimer, coowner of five Brocante shops in Cornwall. “With a number of cafes and restaurant bookings dropping off it definitely killed the customers who come out for the day to have lunch and shop. However, we finally managed to open our new chapel shop in Charlestown on December 17 which helped to bring in additional trade, and the customers who did come in and shop with us, although slightly less in numbers, definitely spent more than last year. Online sales were not as strong as last year, as people were able to come out to shop physically, but they were still well up on 2019. Stand out products were cushions and blankets - we sold loads! helped by our Christmas window. Plus, plant pots and planters were also good as people have a lot more house plants now.” Lessons learned: “All we can do is have stock, and be positive when our customers are in store, making their shopping experience as lovely as possible, and not getting sucked into the ‘will we won’t we close.’” Below: Cushions and throws were a stand out feature of Brocante’s Christmas window in Fowey.
Record Christmas Sales “The last week was our busiest, with December 23 and 24 our best trading days in two years, with record sales in both stores,” confirmed Jon May, co-owner of Mooch stores in Bewdley and Stourport. “Despite reports in the media, we didn’t find people shopping earlier, and overall, we actually had a very good Christmas, with sales back to 2019 levels in both stores. Footfall was up, but the average spend was lower as some of our star lines were unavailable due to the ongoing shipping crisis which was very frustrating. If we had had some of these product lines in stock, we would have had one of our best Christmas's ever.” As for online sales, Jon added: “they were strong but down on last year by around 20%, partly because our stores were open. However, sales were still 80% up on the pre pandemic sales of 2019, demonstrating that online is now a key part of our business.” Lessons learned: “None. Just frustrations regarding the shortages of larger homeware products to increase average spend.” Above: One of Mooch’s Stourport store windows, which were themed ‘The Most Wonderful Time of The Year’. Spotlight On... Societal Changes
Of The
Times Diversity, gender neutrality, mental health, veganism, protecting our planet and gaming are among the key elements driving societal change. PG&H takes a look at what strides the gift industry has taken to reflect these popular culture shifts. Recyclability, climate change, mental health/wellbeing, woke-ness, gender neutral, multi-cultural diversity, rainbow families, veganism, ‘girl boss’ attitudes and gaming... these are just some of the many societal changes that are currently part of our lifestyles, changing the way we think and feel about everyday living. According to Bookspeed’s managing director Lewis Dawson, publishing is always one of the best places to look to see how societies are changing. “We have seen a significant change to the make-up of our bestseller lists over the past few years, with consumers looking for more substantive books on current cultural trends in addition to the more traditional gift books that contain easier or lighter content that was more
dominant a few years ago, such as Ladybird novelty parody books,” comments Lewis. “Broadly, the areas that have proved popular would fall under the categories of inclusivity race, gender, diversity of thought, body types, ways of living etc and sustainability, environmentalism, and specifically, what individuals can do, whether that is reducing one’s own carbon footprint or plastic usage etc.” He continues: “What ties these two strands together is a growing realisation that the world is lacking coherent joined-up political leadership and a common vision for what we think the future should look like. Plus, there is a growing realisation that if we are to create the future that we want to see, we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and do it

ourselves, whether that’s individuals, businesses, communities or coordinated campaigning/collective action. In a very fragmented world, there is a huge opportunity for new ideas of how we exist, or how we are to deal with the huge challenges we face, to emerge, and books have always been the place where new ways of thinking have come from.” Sam Wahid, managing director at Gift Republic, highlights that the company recognises that there is a very strong voice in the world now, and always will be, from all
Playing The Game Calendars too, which are often bought as gifts in the run up to Christmas, are also tapping into societal changes. “Over the past few years we have seen a huge increase in popularity in gaming,” confirms Danilo’s marketing manager Claire Bates. “According to a WGSN report, gaming is no longer just a hobby, it is now emerging as a full blown lifestyle category in its own right, as dedicated and casual gamers buy into accessories and gaming-related products, and brands adapt their offerings to keep up with the growing demand for all things gaming. Total global spending on gaming is now expected to exceed $200bn by 2023, according to Newzoo, and therefore consumer appetite looks set to continue growing.” In line with the trend, Danilo continues to add new gaming titles to its portfolio each year, with its 2022 greeting card and calendar collection featuring Minecraft, Super Mario, Animal Crossing, X Box and many more. Left: Danilo’s calendars for 2022 include Super Mario, reflecting the huge trend for gaming.

Spotlight On... Societal Changes ages, embracing gender neutral, diversity, veganism and female empowerment, as well as taking care of the planet with recyclable packaging and less packaging. “These strong voices have made us introduce more products that help the environment, such as our new DIY Birdhouse, Bug Hostel, Bee Hotel and Butterfly Lodge that are interactive, help nurture nature and a customer’s own wellness, while also helping the environment,” Sam explains. “These products also contain no plastic and are specifically packed for the consumer with a reusable, 'cool' tin. Sales of these items have started well and we see a large demand for them going into 2022, as well as our vegan bath range which we wanted to offer because of the high demand and need for these items. We now see this not as a need, but as an expectation.”
Sam continues: “We love to see the customer pushing for a better environment and more sustainable products. They are all pushing the gifting industry in a positive direction and the consumer is really driving all companies to think of a better, more sustainable, and more environmentally friendly way of working. We see this not as a trend

but the direction of our business year on year, and we are on board to make the changes needed to improve the market we love.” Highlighting veganism, Katie Loxton, founder of her eponymous brand, as well as Joma Jewellery, says that she is extremely proud that the company has been a vegan leather brand since day one, only using quality, built-to-last, soft vegan leather materials. “Using vegan leather across our handbags and accessories collections creates less caron dioxide emissions, uses less water and requires no toxic chemicals during production in comparison to real leather bags,” she explains. (In fact, the company is so confident in its designs and materials that it offers a one year guarantee as reassurance). Novelty gifts too, are reflecting the way society is thinking nowadays. “Our new game Woke Up, launching at Spring Fair, has been influenced by societal changes,” highlights Bubblegum Stuff’s founder Courtney Wood (who was the runner-up to the winner of The Apprentice in 2016). "Initially, ‘woke’ was a term coined by those that identified as woke. But it has since become a pejorative word used by those looking to dismiss changes in attitudes around race, gender, sexuality and so on,
and the language we use in relation to them. I therefore wanted to create a game that creates debate and reflects the views of current society,” Courtney explains. “Depending on the side of the fence you sit on, people will feel the game is either political correctness gone mad or rightfully woke. We've all got an opinion on whether woke is a force for good or a snowflake crusade, and that was our starting point for this game. Either way, it will be insightful, get everyone talking and might even get people to change their opinion." Currently there is also a big ‘girl boss’ trend, with Boxer Gifts’ managing director, Thomas O’Brien, highlighting that the company has long seen strong women being recognised with fun gifting. “As far back as the 1980s, this was very popular in our range,” confirms Thomas. “However, the biggest change we are seeing today is the phrasing and language that is used, which is shown in our recently launched Bad Bitch Bible, a daily planner which follows current punchier word trends. Interestingly, our young, trendy product development team were shocked to find that this language, while not used much for 20 years, was a popular term of empowerment over 30 years ago too!” He adds that in Boxer’s gift book range, there has also been a lot of renewed focus on sustainability, with easy gifting title such as How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint talking about simple ways to be more eco-friendly. States Thomas: “There is now a growing range of books which offer a great way for retail to support changing consumer habits.”
A Focus On Mental Health A Garden Centre’s Perspective... One of the biggest societal changes over the past two years has been the focus on mental health, and as lockdowns during the pandemic revealed, gardening has been shown to be one of the best ways to alleviate stress and promote a calmer, more relaxed attitude, helping people to cope with the ups and downs of everyday life. In terms of how people will be approaching gardening in 2022, Marcus Eyles, Dobbies’ horticultural director, expects wellbeing to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. “Gardening is often associated with having a positive impact on our mental health, as well as our physical wellbeing, which fits with the trends of looking after yourself and self-acceptance. The benefits of gardening are endless, and it’s expected that more people will take to their outdoor spaces to look after themselves in 2022.” He predicts that city and townies will be making the most of their space too, and that more people will be interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables, with significant innovations in how vegetables can be grown in small spaces, linked with a flourishing interest in grow your own.” Right: Dobbies’ ‘slow living’ pots encourage people to slow down, with muted tones and colours changing with the light, mirroring the way nature ebbs and flows.

Spotlight On... Spring Fair
Launching Into Spring
Returning to the NEC, Birmingham, after two years, Spring Fair 2022 is on course to be bigger and better than ever. Four exhibitors tell PG&H about their showstoppers and their stands at February’s Spring Fair.
Below: Among the new accessories on the Gallery Direct stand at Spring Fair.
Celebrating Milestones Helen Cottrill, marketing & product director, Enesco... Approach: “Enesco is in a brand new location right in the centre of Hall 4 (stands C40/D41 and C60/C61), with our artists celebrating several milestones in 2022. The overall stand will have a brand new layout to include a stunning welcome area, where we will be serving hot and cold drinks.” Celebrating anniversaries: “We have the 120th anniversary of Peter Rabbit, and having been a licensee for over 30 years this is of huge importance to us. There will be a striking feature display as the highlight of our stand, and we will also be hosting a celebratory event. However, we are waiting to hear the Covid guidelines before we can confirm the details. Our relationship with Jim Shore also celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2022. Although Jim will, unfortunately, not be joining us at the show, we will have a huge display of his collections and collaborations and hope to welcome him to the UK and Europe later in the year for some collectors’ events. We will be launching both Looney Tunes and Peanuts by Jim Shore at the show and the much anticipated new additions to Disney Traditions. “2022 is also the 20th anniversary of the launch of Lolita’s luxury hand painted glass collection. Covid allowing, we are hoping to welcome Lolita to the show. The 2022 collection features newly designed milestone birthday glasses as well as a collection of everyday designs for home entertaining or enjoying a drink at home.” Showstoppers: “Highlights are the Demdaco Portfolio Collection, our brand new Kalidou plush collection, Looney Tunes by not only Jim Shore but also Romero Britto, and Disney Baby, a collection of gifts for new babies and parents. We also have two brand new global licensed collections, Abby Diamond and Painted Peace, both of which are home gift and accessories.” Top tip for visitors: “Enjoy! Meet the people, view the product and enjoy being back to some level of normality.” Left: Abby Diamond from Enesco.
Doubled Our Stand Size Peter Delaney, managing director, Gallery Direct... Approach: “At Spring Fair 2022 we have doubled the size of our stand and relocated to the front of hall 7. As always, we are determined to put on the best show possible and need extra space to accommodate our significantly increased product ranges. Our catalogue now offers around 6,000 lines, and we want to be able to showcase a wide selection of these, especially our new SS22 collection. As always, visitors are invited to enjoy our legendary hospitality and can also claim a reusable water bottle filled with chilled water.” Showstoppers: “Our SS22 collection offers over 1,300 new lines, featuring accessories, including gifts, kitchen, tableware and bathroom products, textiles, outdoor, wall décor and furniture, with a huge selection featured at the show. We will be launching six exciting new trends: Shape of Colour; Inspired Luxe; Pastel Paradise; Refined Neutral; New Traditional and Design Project.” Top tip for visitors: “Plan your route around your favourite and new suppliers to ensure that you have plenty of quality time to make considered buying decisions.” Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

Zoning In Mark Howard, managing director, Puckator... Approach: “The layout for our stand (Hall 4; stand B10-C11 is really inspiring this year as we’ve been very keen on the idea of zones. Initially, as visitors step onto the stand they will be immediately immersed in the licensing zone, where they will find our new products with our well known licensor partners as well as a few new faces. There will also be exciting photo ops with our jumbo Pusheen and our Original Storm Trooper.” Showstoppers: “We’re particularly enthusiastic about Simon’s Cat’s new vibrant updated style. The bold pattern is eye-catching and really enthuses each product with the cat’s personality. There will also be a vivacious back-to-school section featuring new lunch sets and an extensive rucksack collection. We also have some new bright and attentiongrabbing designs for kids, including our Dinosauria Jr and Little Tractors range. They feature bold, colourful icons and feature on lots of essential school items. There will also be a more mature, natural floral section with a variety of products ranging from picnic sets to homeware to beauty gifts. The main focus will be dainty floral patterns in a wide range of colours and styles with something to appeal to all garden lovers. We will also be announcing our new partnership with British artisan designer Julie Dodsworth, with whom we have created a line of elegant giftware with soothing colours and English countryside motifs. Visitors will also find pet, home fragrance, fantasy and souvenir.” Top tips for visitors: “A practical idea for visitors is to arrive at the show with a small wheeled shopping trolley to lighten the load as they walk up and down the aisles. Plus, in terms of planning which companies to go and see, it always pays to sign up for Spring Fair’s little Black Book.”
Bringing Nature Into The Home Simon Grigg, managing director, Nobile... Approach: “Our stand will have a slightly larger entrance and exit, with a more focused product range on display. To compensate, there will also be a revised, condensed lightweight catalogue for people to take away. Our website has proved to work well, and we will be asking for products not to be touched during the show, with the normal hand cleansing available. In terms of shortened show days, I feel little or no impact will be felt by this. It’s a good decision, and we are prepared to accommodate visiting customers as well those that prefer to have after show contact via calls, sales representatives and our website.” Showstoppers: “We will be continuing to extend our product theme of ‘bringing nature into the home’ with new hand decorated collections launched at the show, to include Lemon Grove, Strawberry Fields and Cerise Elysian. These items follow on from our Bees & Blooms collections. We have also added to our ever growing fragrance diffuser range.” Top tips for visitors: “Pre-plan who you want to see and allocate good time to explore new suppliers. Take a single product phone image of each supplier you’re interested in, with your business card next to it. This will help with post show follow up recall. (However, don’t forget to ask if it’s OK to take an image. For us, it’s absolutely not a problem). Provide the supplier with your full company details in the form of a card, sticky labels - which are excellent and inexpensive - or headed paper, together with trade references etc. We really appreciate it. Plus, a great time to see a supplier can be early morning or last thing.” Top right and above: Lemon Grove and Strawberry Fields are among Nobile’s brand new launches at Spring Fair.

Spring Fair: Face To Face With Simon Lau
All The Buzz
Of Spring Fair With thousands of brands showing at Spring Fair, and tens of thousands of visitors expected, the show, taking place at the NEC in Birmingham from 6-9 February is an industry ‘must visit’, with retailers looking forward to, once again, browsing the aisles. Event director Simon Lau tells PG&H what he’s most looking forward to. It’s hard to believe that the last Spring Fair was held pre pandemic in February 2020, with event director Simon Lau naturally excited to be welcoming everyone back to the NEC. “I can’t wait to see business being done on the show floor, to feel the buzz and excitement of our exhibitors and visitors reconnecting again,” he states. “The Spring Fair team has worked tirelessly over the last 12 months researching the market, talking to our customers, understanding and overcoming some of the challenges and changes that the pandemic has created, and we are therefore confident that Spring Fair will deliver the most exciting, diverse and comprehensive marketplace for gift and home retailers. There will be a treasure trove of new products and a stellar line-up of brands, as well as bucket loads of inspirations and trends, highly relevant and topical insights on the Inspiring Retail Stage. In addition, the official launch of Curated Meetings is set to deliver over 400 prearranged face to face meetings between vetted brands and buyers.”
Above: Spring Fair’s event director Simon Lau. Left: Talking shop at Moda, Autumn Fair. The show will be making its debut at Spring Fair in February. Below: Curated Meetings will be taking place on February 7 and 8.
In fact, Simon recommends that anyone that hasn’t signed up to be part of Curated Meetings should take a walk past on Monday February 7 and Tuesday February 8 to see in person this “supercharged way of doing business.” As for the show’s highlights, he points to the Inspiring Retail Stage which will once again be packed full of fascinating talks from industry leaders. “I’m particularly looking forward to listening to Jo Fairley, founder of Green & Black’s, who will be talking about staying true to her values
when running her business, and we also have a couple of exciting keynote speakers!” he reveals. With fashion and footwear show Moda making its debut at Spring Fair, Simon says that diversification is key to retail as consumer buying habits change. “The reaction to the co-location of Moda at Autumn Fair was unbelievably positive - so many long-standing Moda exhibitors had their best show ever, opening a host of new accounts with lifestyle, gift and home retailers as well as garden centres and heritage sites. I therefore believe that it is a very positive and much needed new direction for retailers.” www.springfair.com" www.springfair.com
Spring Fair App Simon’s top tip for visitors is to download the handy official Spring Fair app. “It’s really brilliant!” he enthuses. “It delivers intelligent AI product recommendations based on a person’s profile and interests, along with smart tools to help them to navigate the show. If visitors download it before their visit, it will help them to plan beforehand, and while they’re at the show, they can use it as their personal show guide and navigator, as well as utilising its GPS to help them find their way to brands and suppliers.”

Back To The Future
Below: Candlelight’s owner and founder Mike Winch is shown in the company’s Rotherham showroom. Bottom: The re-launched amber kitchen storage jars are the centrepiece of Candlelight’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Celebrating 50 years in 2022, Candlelight one of the biggest, best-known and most successful suppliers in the gift and homewares industry - is proud to be relaunching the company’s iconic, amber kitchen storage jars to commemorate the special milestone. Founder Mike Winch reflects on five fascinating decades and looks forward to what the future holds. Candlelight - a designer, importer and wholesale supplier of design-led giftware, home accessories and seasonal products isn’t a company that is automatically aligned with the housewares industry; and yet, for most of its 50-year history, it has been at the forefront of bespoke, exclusive product, not only for major Blue chip retailers in the UK, but on a global stage too. “Because of the exclusivity of our housewares products - which have included storage, and large dinnerware services we’ve stayed under the radar until now, but it’s actually housewares that have been one of our strongest and most profitable product
Stock To Spare With freight issues and stock shortages still dominating the headlines, the company took the decision in April last year to increase its purchasing for the back end of 2021 and early 2022, “on the basis that if you don’t have stock then you can’t sell anything,” Mike explains. “We know from our own experience that a lot of major retailers have been hugely let down, and we are more than able to fulfil those big orders. Our warehouse is bulging with stock, so for all retailers - both big and small - we have the stock to not only fulfil immediate orders, but also to supply stock to cover January/February, when the shelves need filling again.”

sectors over the decades,” confirms Candlelight’s founder Mike Winch. “As a company, we are extremely proactive in the housewares sector, and it is why we have chosen our iconic amber kitchen storage jars to commemorate our 50th anniversary in 2022.” Explains Mike: “The jars, which were a phenomenal success in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, changed our businesses from a UK cottage industry to a global business that saw us selling to countries around the world. Back then, that was a huge achievement. The jars were manufactured in Yorkshire, with the gold stencilling put on by a company
based just three miles down the road from our Rotherham HQ.” In fact, Mike couldn’t be more excited to be re-launching the storage jars and is predicting another global success story for the company. There was a soft launch at Autumn Fair in September, but in February, the jars will be a commemorative centrepiece on the company’s stand at Spring Fair 2022. The show will also provide a perfect platform for Mike to thank Candlelight customers, both large and small, for their all-important support over the years. Candlelight’s 50th anniversary is, of course, not only a major milestone, but also a major achievement for the business. “As with all businesses, there have been ups and downs along the way,
34-35_GF.qxp_New Grid 11/01/2022 15:49 Page 3
In Profile: Candlelight: 50th Anniversary but thankfully, we’ve got it right more times than we’ve got it wrong. And with so many people and companies that have come and gone over the past 50 years and, unfortunately, the likelihood of more companies falling by the wayside over the next six to nine months, I’m very proud to say that not only are we still standing, and debt-free, but that, as a company, we are stronger than ever and continuing to go from strength to strength.” Looking ahead to the next six to 12 months, Mike says that China remains one of the biggest marketplaces for both housewares and giftware. “Opportunities are full on for us at the moment, as we have people on the ground in both China and Hong Kong. Buyers can’t go out to China as they once did, so every day is a potential opportunity for us, as we can supply the big orders and are currently in steep growth.” Nevertheless, Mike remains a realist. “The old adage, ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’, rings very true. There are still some very tough challenges to negotiate, challenges that I have never experienced in my 50 years in this business.” Back to the company’s 50th anniversary this year, Mike’s plan is to take every opportunity to enjoy each and every moment. “We will be celebrating every day, every week, every month is some way or another. It won’t just be one big 50th anniversary event. It will be many, many different things.” As you would expect, Mike sees his staff, and their wellbeing, as paramount even more so since the pandemic. “Going forward, we want to do even more for our employees,” Mike underlines. The company has also invested in taking more apprentices into the business, “young people across all departments, who can be trained in the way we do things,” Mike explains. “Over the past 15 months we have had some real success stories. It is playing the long game. But if you find the right people and support them, it works. It’s about ‘growing’ our own staff, rather than taking a risk based on someone’s CV.” So where does the company go from here? “I believe 100 per cent in succession,”

says Mike. “In fact, we are currently in the process of making sure that Candlelight can run successfully for another 50 years.” By succession, Mike is talking about the next generation that have come into the business, among them his son Ben, a former stockbroker, now the company’s managing director. There is also his daughter Kate, a former regional schools vice principal, who joined two years ago and is currently in charge of marketing. Completing the trio of second generation top tier management is Tommy Bartles, (the son of Candlelight’s long serving design director Sue Mayo), who
Candlelight: The Lowdown l With just a £20 ‘investment’, Mike Winch started Candlelight, making candles from a barn
in Rotherham, during the miner’s strike in 1972. l Over five decades, the company has proudly remained in Rotherham, and currently trades
from 145,000 sq ft landmark premises. l With Candlelight in steep growth, the company is looking to design and build a state-of-
the-art warehouse in Barnsley in 2022.
Mike’s Words Of Wisdom l What was the best piece of business advice you were given? “50 years ago, I was told that candles would be OK for the summer but that I would need to think about handkerchiefs for the winter. It was a way of saying that you need products that tick the right boxes at the right time.” l What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs today? “Believe in yourself and work hard to make it happen. You can achieve anything if you want to.” l How would he describe yourself? “Energetic, creative and impatient (to get things done).”
ran Candlelight subsidiary CPL Global in Hong Kong for eight years before coming back to the UK to base himself at the company’s Rotherham HQ in 2021. “I will eventually have to hand over to the people with the experience, and the years, to make it happen,” points out Mike. “But I feel confident that we have a first class team of experienced people on board. Their direction is to take advantage of the opportunities out there and to grow the business.” Reflecting on the secret of the company’s longevity and success, Mike comments: “Running a business is a long haul. It gives you time to make mistakes and also to get things right. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and not to make the same mistakes again. You can never stop working on your business. It’s relentless, and it’s at your cost. You have to re-invent and re-energise. But most importantly, to make your business a success, you have to believe in yourself.” Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

Mama I Love You With Mother’s Day the second most important gift giving occasion for gift retailers, it’s all systems to go to make the very most of the big day on Sunday March 27, with suppliers pulling out all the stops to offer gifts ranging from pocket money priced giftware to the more extravagant. From jewellery, candles, faux flowers and trinkets to gift books, chocolate and gifts with a twist of humour, there’s plenty to delight mums of all ages and stages. Like mothers or mother figures, gifts for Mother’s Day come in different guises, and while the traditional bunch of Spring flowers still makes a wonderful, much appreciated gift, PMC’s Felicity Colbert says that the company has seen an increasing demand for gifts with a sense of humour. “Personalised gifts are a fun way to introduce tongue-incheek messages, alongside a more
sentimental personalisation,” she comments. “These themes are being reflected in our Mother’s Day gifts for 2022 and other occasions throughout the year. By incorporating these ideas into our gifts, using a traditional colour scheme, we feel we’ve managed to create a perfect balance between love and humour. For example, our mugs, wine glasses and wine gifts, which are always popular for Mother’s Day, have been revamped to include just the right amount of sass!” With wellbeing a huge ongoing trend, gifts that pamper are a must - better still if they have a twist. “We Top: Happy Mother’s Day! expect wellbeing gifts, and those that help recipients reconnect with nature, to be popular this Mother's Day,” states Sam Wahid, managing director of Gift Republic. “Our yoga stack game is a fun option for a mum into fitness, while another popular gift is our Greenhouse grow kit which gives recipients everything they need to brighten up their living space or desk with a mini indoor garden.” Adds Sam: “As a lot of us are still spending more time at home, pampering gifts such as our G&T bath bombs, remain a favourite.” Joma Jewellery’s founder and creative director, Katie Loxton, says that after an uncertain few years, this Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse for people to spoil the mother figures in their life - to thank them for all

their support, love and advice. “However, there’s no ‘one size fits all’, with the day extended to celebrate every type of mum, from step mum to mummy-to-be, to grandma, as well as those who are like a mum, all of which takes centre stage in our new Joma Jewellery Mother’s Day collection,” explains Katie. The range features the company’s best selling sentiments and poems that are
synonymous with the brand, to include A Little ‘Like A Mum To Me’ bracelet, A Little ‘Happy First Mother’s Day’ bracelet, A Little ‘Lovely Step Mum’ bracelet and A Little ‘Mummy To Beautiful Boys’ bracelet, with Katie adding that colour is also a big theme for the day. “Sugary-sweet florals and fresh hues give a sense of love and appreciation,” she points out. Mary Caputo, jewellery buyer and designer at Joe Davies concurs that jewellery makes a perfect gift. “What better way for people to show how much they care than with a stylish piece of sentiment jewellery with a message for mum or grandma. It’s always on trend when it comes to a Mother’s Day gift, and given the current trend for all things sentimental, our silver plated Equilibrium Sentiment collection features heartfelt messages of affection, with pieces for all pockets, to include scarves, from as little as £7 at retail in the Equilibrium fashion accessories range.” With Mother’s Day in mind, Julian Hunt, managing director of Lesser & Pavey, highlights a host of products Top left: ‘A Little’ bracelets from Joma’s Mother’s Day collection. that would be suitable as gifts for Mother’s Day, “all lasting a lot longer than flowers,” says Julian. “An example is the Daffodil collection, featuring artwork by Jennifer Rose, which is a new range of illustrated homewares that brings the essence of Spring to mind through the bright colour of daffodils. Studies show that the meaning of the colour yellow includes warmth and cheerfulness, making items in this collection ideal gifts for mums.”
Of course, a fragranced candle always makes a lovely gift. “Mums work incredibly hard all year round, so it’s time for them to sit back, relax and enjoy,” says Best Kept Secrets’ managing director Vanessa Curry. “Mums, mothers, step mums, grandmothers and other mother figures come in all shapes and forms in our lives, and don’t always have to be the person who gave birth to us to be the person who loves, nurtures and cares for Continued on page 39
Saying It With (Faux) Flowers Of course, flowers, both fresh and faux, are traditional gifts for mothers, with Candlelight among the suppliers offering an eclectic rage of gifts to suit different price points - from traditional candles and ornaments to a more rustic wreath decorated with dried grasses and wooden hearts. “Flowers never age, so we have a variety of contemporary faux stems, to include roses, pampas and hydrangea, that will last for years to replicate the appreciation of mums and Mother’s Day,” says marketing manager Kate Winch. l “For retailers, Mother’s Day is a great time to get out the florals and brighten up the mood and shopping environment, with flower arches and trendy dried, sprayed neon flowers giving florals an updated twist. A variety of gift favourites, such as loungewear and candles can be relied on, but retailer should be imaginative with their product offer and price points and mix in some unexpected pieces like wall art to help customers find a gem for their mums.” Jane Reucroft, founder and managing director, A Gift From The Gods l “It’s a great idea to create display sections specifically catered to Mother’s Day gifting, along with gift suggestions for each type of mum. A successful display recognises that children of all ages are buying for their mums so it should include pocket money presents alongside more considered purchases.” Sam Wahid, managing director, Gift Republic l “Separating specific ‘mum’ and ‘grandma’ gifts really focuses the attention of customers, with the use of point of sale that shouts Mother’s Day Sunday March 27, attracting attention to the products on offer.” Mary Caputo, jewellery buyer and designer, Joe Davies l ”Retailers could feature statements about what a mother means to different ages and walks of life, along with pictures, portraits and words that display the true meaning.” Kate Winch, marketing manager, Candlelight
Mum Twilight Jar with moving hearts, really hits home with great warmth.” Continues Thomas: “With March a darker month, our range of other light up sentiments, such as the Mum Luxe Starlight bottle, also work really well, giving a much needed glow to our beloved mums ready for a bright, sunny Spring.” As Gifts From The Gods’ founder Jane Reucroft summarises: “you’ve got to make it easy for those doing the buying such as dads with kids. Retailer Face To Face: Williams Of Audlem 160th Anniversary
Keeping It In
The Family When Eli Williams opened the doors of his fabrics and haberdashery store, Williams of Audlem, in 1862, Queen Victoria was over halfway through her reign and Lord Palmerston was the country’s Prime Minister. Fast forward 160 years, and Eli’s great, great granddaughter Judy Williams is proud to be at the helm of this Greats-award winning retro-refitted store, which today has gifts at its heart, but still sells newspapers and magazines, as well as basic hardware, referencing its past. Judy looks backwards and forwards at the family business as the shop gets ready to celebrate its 160th anniversary in 2022. Pushing open the door of Williams of Audlem, based in the heart of the rural village of Audlem in South Cheshire, is like stepping back in time. You can see and touch its history, with many of the period fixtures and fittings still in place. They include the shop’s till, purchased second hand in the1890s by the founder’s son, George Williams, which featured on BBC 1’s The Repair Shop, (series 2, episode 11), as well as several items acquired from online second hand market sites. Evolving from a drapers and haberdashery store to sell gifts, home and interior accessories, greeting cards and stationery, the store dates back to at least 1840. “It was purchased by my great, great grandfather in 1863, who employed seamstresses in the back of the shop to make up garments for his more affluent customers,” explains Eli’s great, great granddaughter Judy Evans, the fifth generation of the family Above: Judy Williams is shown receiving the Independent Gift Retailer of the Year -North & Northern Ireland trophy at The Greats Awards in 2019. to own the business. The Williams’ also acquired several printing presses, printing stationery for village events and for the local church and chapels’ services and celebrations. Eli’s eldest son, George Williams, took over the running of the business in the 1890s, and although his sons didn’t follow him into the family business, the shop passed to George’s daughter, the entrepreneurial Hilda Dutton, Judy’s grandmother. “By all accounts she was an unusual character for her time,” explains
Judy. “As a young woman in the 1920’s, she drove a car and rode a motorbike! She also introduced a shop delivery service, driving to rural farms where she delivered goods on a weekly basis showing that home delivery as a concept isn’t anything new.” Nor was late night opening. The shop would be open until 8pm during the week to accommodate the locals finishing their work in the agricultural industry. Hilda it turns out, was also a formidable business woman, putting all her money into stock for the shop at the outbreak of WW2, claiming that the business would either ‘sink or swim’. “Fortunately, it swam and

Retailer Face To Face: Williams Of Audlem 160th Anniversary she retired a relatively wealthy woman!” smiles Judy. After the war, the printing presses were sold and the business became more reliant on off-the-peg clothing, haberdashery, bedding and a growing newspaper trade. Home products were introduced in the early 1900s, based on Audlem’s close proximity to Stoke-on-Trent’s pottery industry. Comments Judy: “This not only included everyday plates and crockery, but also what I can remember my grandmother referring to as ‘fancy goods’.” Around this time, the greeting card side of the business expanded too. “As a small child, I can remember my grandmother keeping her stock of greeting cards behind the counter in boxes, so customers would have to specifically ask to see them in order to make a purchase. How times have change in today’s world of card racks and spinners!” she muses.
Hilda’s reign continued until the late 1960s - a time when The Beatles were at the height of their fame and Mary Quant and Twiggy dominated the fashion headlines with the business passing to Judy’s parents, Megan and Derek McKelvey. “My mother, Hilda’s youngest daughter, was a slightly less enthusiastic owner, but fortunately my father, a cost accountant from Salford, took to shop and village life like a duck to the River Irwell! My parents sold solid mid quality branded clothing, and I can remember the first pairs of Levi jeans arriving in the late 70’s which caused quite a stir!” recalls Judy. Her parents ran the shop from the late ‘60s until the Noughties, becoming agents for Tri-ang, Meccano and Britains toys along the way. But when Judy, a senior textile

production and quality control manager for Laura Ashley Manufacturing came back to the village from mid-Wales to raise her family, she could see that the product mix needed to change. “The first thing to go was most of the fashion wear as many established quality brands had disappeared, and supermarkets were selling clothing cheaper than my parents could buy it. However, to this day, some elements remain, such as gift-led gloves, socks and scarves.” Having co-run the business with her parents for several years, Judy took over the shop in 2013. By this time, other elements of the business needed to be addressed, such as the steady decline in newspaper sales, with the expansion of gifts and stationery seen as the way forward. Another key decision was whether to modernise - or not - the shop’s interior. Her parents had carried out a refit in the 1970s, leaving Judy torn between completely modernising again, or rescuing the old counters and fitments from the garage (being war babies her parent never threw anything away) and go retro. “Having a lifelong appreciation of antiques and curios, there was really only one choice, with my decision not to modernise ensuring that the shop continues to retain its historic character,” Judy reasons.
In fact, she highlights that it’s her decision that offers today’s customers a unique shopping experience - a traditional ‘step back in time’ retro refitted shop with a genuine heritage. “It’s a retail business strongly rooted in customer and community service, while also being ethically aware and fair principled, whether this applies to staff, suppliers or customers,” states Judy. As she puts it, “our shop has been at the heart of our community for over one and a half centuries - both inside and outside of the building. Outside of the shop, my family and I have a rich history of serving on community committees and services, as well as various local councils and also being actively involved in village events and fund raising. Inside the shop, we have always been a store that enjoys going the extra mile-and-a-half for both customers and non-customers, whether that has involved delivering shopping to the housebound, lending jump leads to broken down motorists, being called on at 2am to give a stranded elderly customer a lift home from hospital, or serving a desperate customer on Christmas Day - and believe me, there’s rarely a Christmas that we don’t!” As the current owner, Judy’s long-term plans include developing and extending the gift and greeting card ranges, while keeping a small part of the store as mixed purpose to ensure that customers ‘shop local’. “The strategy also means that we can take advantage of linking products to our giftware - for example carrying bird food, our best seller during lockdown, which links in with our bird-themed giftware and cards.” With a 160th anniversary to celebrate and commemorate, Judy has commissioned bespoke items to include bags and mugs. “We are also looking at fundraising for local causes on the theme of ‘160’ so that we can give something back to a community that has supported us all these years. And, of course, we are also putting together our strategic plan for our next 160 years in business!” she laughs. Eli Williams would be very proud indeed. Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

Spring “For Spring 2022, we are introducing more positive vibrant shades to the colourful palette of our Life In Bloom collection,” highlights Ashleigh & Burwood’s PR manager Deborah Bettinson. “With these refreshed colours come new uplifting fragrances. Lotus Flower & Watermelon is teamed with shocking pink, while Wisteria & White Woods is complemented by sky blue and Orange Blossom & Mandarin is coupled with zesty orange, with the colours and scents designed to bring a burst of positive energy to the home.” Meanwhile, balancing the vivacity of the new Life In Bloom additions, the company has also designed new fragrances for The Scented Home reed diffusers and lamp fragrances that cater to the trend for escapism, with the relaxing Every Cloud and Tropical Escape fragrances embracing escapism for Spring/Summer.
Best Kept Secrets has embraced Spring with colourful candles and tea lights. “With yellow the colour of happiness, optimism, creativity and sunshine, we have a redesigned freesia, fizzy sherbet lemon sugar You Are My Sunshine candle tin, as well as a golden, star scattered ‘congratulations’ candle,” highlights Best Kept Secrets’ managing director Vanessa Curry. “In addition, complementing our Just Because occasion range are tea light ‘threes’ and tea light boxes in colourful designs.” Also putting an emphasis on Spring colours and fragrances is Candlelight. “Light, home fragrance for Above left: You Are My Sunshine from Best Kept Secrets. the company’s best selling ranges across home fragrance. “JustBe Botanicals, developed by Scottish aromatherapist Gail Bryden, is an example of a growing trend,” says the company’s chief executive Jacqui Gale. “We’ve always known fragrance effects our mood, but the correct blend can do more than just relax or evoke nostalgia. The use of aromatherapy oils restores emotional balance, illuminate wellness and enhance a sense of wellbeing, plus the candles are made with a new coconut wax blend which is renewable and sustainable.” In addition, Jacqui highlights that the new coconut wax, which is also available in Wax Lyrical’s Portmeirion Botanic Garden range, isn’t the only new product helping to tackle climate change. “Manufacturing in England, our factory is powered by a wind turbine, and we continue to find new
vessels and ways to create sustainability from eco-friendly packaging, second life vessels and recyclable bottles.” As Chilliwinter’s co-owner Kathy Chillistone adds: “wellbeing is being woven into our everyday lives and our aromatherapy candle blends suit different needs. With many of us continuing to work from home, adapting to a more integrated sense of work and life balance, we are tapping into a variety of senses to stimulate the response and mood we want to create, helping us to feel calmer, refreshed, restored and at peace.” On the fragrance front, Christina Brand, founder and managing director of The Candle
Brand, points out that in 2022 we will see a transformation in fragrance, heavily weighted towards natural inspired fragrances. “We will see a trend evolve featuring brands looking to bottle the fragrance of the outdoors, turning to clean and realistic type smells. The idea of escapism in nature and connecting with nature will be two very strong themes, and we will be releasing a further two fragrances into our collection for Spring 2022.” Also putting a big emphasis on Springtime fragrances is Sharon Jervis,
founder and managing director of Beefayre. “Our new scent is tuberose which smells stunning as a diffuser or candle and also makes a lovely hand cream. We’ve used yellow in the packaging, an unusual choice for us, but the colour suits and adds a vibrancy to the introduction of a new post-Covid Springtime product.” Continued on page 49
Flameless Fragrance Frank Holland, managing director of Liberty Candles, which also distributes Candle Warmers, predicts that electronic candle warmers and electric diffusers mist diffusers and wax melt warmers will continue to be a big focus in 2022, with the company’s prices very competitive compared to the major brands. “With safety paramount, a lot of people want to avoid the flame, and one of the most popular products going into 2022 is the kitchen top plug in, which safely gets rid of unwanted smells. The benefits are no flame, no sooting.” He continues: “In addition, we have also seen a big increase in companies wanting to have their own branded candle and diffuser products, with the last three months of 2021 incredibly busy for us,” confirms Frank. “It’s a side of the business that is really building. And with more and more people looking to buy both aromatherapy essential oils as well as fragrance oils, our diffuser range has doubled in size, where again we are very price competitive. For Spring/Summer, and reflecting the current trend for wellbeing, we have launched a new aromatherapy oil, Relax.” Left: Relax is new from Liberty Candles.

Spotlight On... Peter Rabbit’s 120th Anniversary
Happy Birthday With 2022 the year of Peter Rabbit’s 120th birthday, Penguin Random House Children’s will be celebrating the anniversary with an adventurous, fun filled campaign that’s full of Peter’s traditional mischievousness. PG&H took a peek to see who is doing what in licensed giftware. Beatrix Potter’s The Tale Of Peter Rabbit was first published in 1902 by Frederick Warne & Co., (now an imprint of Penguin Random House), with the iconic rabbit in a blue jacket going on to win the hearts of millions of children and adults across the globe based around his antics in Mr McGregor’s garden. As Peter Rabbit’s 120th birthday gets underway, Penguin Ventures, (the licensing team at Penguin Random House Children’s), highlights that it will be growing existing product ranges during 2022, with special commemorative ranges launching across gifting categories, plush and apparel. “The birthday moment presents a fantastic opportunity for both our existing licensees as well as new partners in the UK and other key international territories,” says Susan Bolsover, global licensing and consumer products director at Penguin Ventures. “We’ve been delighted with the
way in which licensees, promotional partners and retailers are supporting this milestone moment, helping to create memories for existing and new Peter Rabbit fans alike, be that through products, experiences or events.” Among the giftware licensees is Rainbow Designs, with managing director Anthony Temple explaining: “Beatrix Potter’s much-loved Peter Rabbit has been an integral part of our Rainbow family for over 45 years now, and it is absolutely no surprise that this cherished, fun-loving bunny has stood the test of time and is now celebrating a momentous 120-year anniversary. Over the years we have embraced the values and integrity of Peter Rabbit and created joyful, inspiring soft play, nursery and toy ranges, including our best-selling Once Upon a Time and Signature collections for little ones’ early years journey.”
He continues. “For 2022, and in celebration of 120 years of Peter Rabbit, we will be adding a new collection of ‘forever toys’, to our best-selling Once Upon a Time range - playful wooden toys that include a Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny pull-along, a colourful wooden building blocks set, a 5 piece wooden shape puzzle and a 28 piece domino set, all featuring Beatrix Potter’s timeless, nostalgic illustrations of Peter Rabbit and his friends.” Another long-term licensee is Enesco, which is celebrating Peter Rabbit’s special anniversary with a new product launch featuring a Running Peter figurine - a limited edition of only 1,200 pieces. “At £35 SRP this will be in huge demand,” states Enesco’s marketing & product director Helen Cottrill. “We have also added an essential

It also has an exclusive launch this Easter with one of the major supermarkets. “Peter Rabbit is such an iconic character that has enchanted families for nearly 120 years, so we really wanted to create a collection of gifts that was sympathetic to the brand and used the traditional Peter Rabbit style but with a modern Fizz twist,” explains marketing manager Zoe Ryan. “Our current range launched just before Christmas and is already selling well for the anniversary year. We are also really excited to have worked with a major retailer and will be launching an exclusive Easter collection in Spring, focused heavily on gifting and games.” “With an incredible legacy that has endured since 1902, we wanted to use this milestone for the brand to celebrate Peter Rabbit’s continued relevance and resonance with today’s families,” says Izzy Richardson, global director, Owned Brands, Penguin Random House Children’s. “Our ambitious, year-long series of birthday celebrations will enable us to connect parents, young children and fans with The World of Peter Rabbit, helping to continue Beatrix Potter’s legacy for a new generation. Through new immersive experiences, digital and social content, consumer products and publishing, everyone will be invited to celebrate with Peter in 2022.” Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

Beautiful With the season and mood changing from dark to light, jewellery suppliers have been doing their utmost to bring bright colours and a bit of fun to the sector, with wellness the latest vibe, and plenty of sparkle around too. In fashion accessories, think crossbody bags, trendy hair accessories and scarves in pretty pastels, all adding to a lovely summery look. Some of the leading companies reveal what’s going to be hot, hot, hot this season.
With Spring around the corner, women everywhere will be looking to add to their jewellery collection, either as a self-treat or as a gift for a friend. Joma Jewellery’s new Spring/Summer 2022 collection is its most colourful collection yet, with splashes of colour appearing in the company’s brand new collections. They include Joma’s uplifting Wellness Stones, Colour Pop ‘A Littles’, Colours of You and jewellery specifically for Mother’s Day. “Hero products this season are our brand new ‘A Little’ bracelets and Secret Message lockets, with every new collection being designed to bring joy and delight,” states Joma Jewellery’s founder Katie Loxton. “With so many new sentiments, shapes and semi-precious gemstones, there’s something for everyone to fall in love with. And, as always, every new season’s
piece boasts silver or gold plating, making the jewellery a thoughtful treat for all occasions, large or small.” At Hot Tomato, key trends for the coming season include pearl, turquoise and coral. “Borne
out of our frustration at the lack of foreign travel it seems we’re looking to lift our spirits with all that these glorious elements inspire,” says managing director Alex Machin. “They provide a nod to warmer climes and are a much needed boost to take us out of the long, dark winter season. And don’t be ‘gold shy’!” states Alex. “We’re selling more of this colour than ever and this new trend really sings when it’s paired with it. Plus, when it comes to bracelets, look for colour and finer ‘staples’ that can be layered with other favourites for an infinite combination of possibilities.” Crystals too, are set to take the market by storm in 2022. “They are the ‘must have’ trend for 2022,” says Joe Davies’ jewellery Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

buyer and designer Mary Caputo. “These magical rocks may be the ‘in’ craze, but in truth they have been around since ancient times. Not only is it fashionable to be seen rocking these aesthetically pleasing jewels, but they are also believed to get rid of negative vibes, helping people to feel regenerated and revived, a win, win in the trend stakes!” enthuses Mary. To tie in with the trend, Mary highlights a brand new Equilibrium Gem collection from Joe Davies, with the range incorporating amethyst, rose quartz, pink agate, amazonite and many more natural quartz crystals. As always, colour is playing a key role in the new jewellery and scarf collections from Miss Milly. “Spring is looking brilliantly bright and fresh,” observes managing director Sarah Watmore. “Yellow, lime green, bright purple and coral all feature in unusual, brave colour combinations alongside perennially popular turquoise, fuchsia and royal blue, with scarves that complement and clash offering upsell opportunities.” At Sea Gems, Kate Evans highlights the sparkling faceted stones and striking organic designs that feature in the company’s Silver Origins collection for
Spring 2022. “They’ve been inspired by the iconic Cornish landscape, and reflect the colours of the ocean,” explains Kate. “The intricate beachcomber range, delicate botanical and wildlife designs, as well as fun, whimsical motifs, celebrate moments of love and life.” At Talbot Fashions, buyer Ginny Bryant confirms that natural paua shell is still as popular as ever in the company’s Tide collection, with exclusive designs proving to be hot sellers. “They include the highland cow, thistles, kingfisher, moon gazing hare, owls, Christmas holly and a robin to name just a few,” she highlights.
“Classic cocktails in the range include Mojito, Strawberry Daiquiri, Sex on the Beach, Bloody Mary, Pina Colada and, of course, Porn Star Martini,” highlights Louise. With so much choice over the coming season, the challenge for gift retailers will be in selecting the pieces that not only reflect the trends, but also make their shops sparkle on the high street!
In addition, the company’s Wish brand features a diverse collection of fashion jewellery encompassing pendants, bracelets and earrings in varied materials. (Themes include cats and dogs, celestial, chakras, angels, woodland, flowers, hearts, Celtic, faceted glass and dried flowers, encapsulated in a glass heart pendant). Life Charms meanwhile, is introducing more elegant, feminine designs this Spring. “Redesigned packaging styling completes each piece, giving our bracelets new life,” 56

says managing director Tony Barrett. “Our new collections are intended to appeal to a wide range of women and make the ideal gift for any occasion. For example, our gold plated chain T-bar bracelets have been created to empower women while our delicate Birthstone collection features stones for each month of the year.” When it comes to earrings, Crumble and Core’s director Louise Pike reveals a brand new collection with a trendy twist. “After a cold winter, Spring beckons and we all need a bit of brightness and fun in our lives, which we have tried to emulate in our cocktail range which includes sterling silver earring cards paired with sparkly CZ studs.

ith fashion accessories going from strength to strength, everything and anything goes this season. “At Powder, we have a fantastically glamorous collection for SS22 which includes our long awaited kimono range alongside new luxurious pyjamas and velvet wash bags,” says Hannah Graham, head of marketing. “All of our new pieces feature in exquisitely bold colours and designs which we hope will bring a Powder-esque carnival atmosphere to our boutiques this season!” At Hot Tomato, managing director Alex Machin says that hair accessories are still a great category to buy into. “Clips, clamps, scrunchies and ties have been a staple since the first lockdown as we continue to play and have fun with our tresses,” says managing director Alex Machin. And with one size clothing continuing to be a big trend for gift shops, T-shirts from Wrendale Designs are a new collection for the company. “It’s one of our favourite new ranges yet,” enthuses founder and creative supremo Hannah Dale. “The Tshirts feature eight of our best selling animal designs - complemented with coloured stripes - co-ordinating with the rest of our accessories collection.” As Katie Loxton, founder of her eponymous company and also Joma Jewellery puts it: “After an uncertain couple of years, this Spring is all about

having fun with fashion choices and refreshing your wardrobe with new shapes, new hues and new materials. Our SS22 collection elevates with the introduction of a fresh new season colour palette, which includes sage green, cornflower blue, off-whites, pinks and dark amber taking centre stage, all of which sit back with the bestselling core colourways.” The company’s signature gold tone hardware and vegan leather design continues into the new season across brand new silhouettes, to include the Zana and Cara crossbody bags and the Dani tortoiseshell backpack, all inspired by the ‘girl onthe-go’ who wants to update her bag collection with statement, timeless styles. “Real semi-precious stones that bring healing properties and positive mantras are laced throughout the collection,” confirms Katie, “while sentiments have been updated across pouches for the new season.” Staying with the newest colours, pastels are also a key trend for the Spring/Summer season, says Joe Davies’ jewellery buyer and designer Mary Caputo. “With Spring in the air, soft tranquil hues are essential,” comments Mary. “To tie in with the colour palette, we will be launching pretty printed and foiled scarves in Far left: One of the designs in a T-shirt collection that’s brand new from Wrendale Designs. soft, subtle pastels along with tote bags.” As for water bottles as a fashion accessory, designer Clare Davis, creator of the reusable Bottle Soc collection, highlights the resurgence of the crossbody bag. “It echoes the hands-free ethos of Bottlesoc, a washable stretchy bottle carrier sleeve that helps protect bottles from scratches and can also be personalised with the user’s name or a cheeky message.” Walking sticks too, have become a fashion accessory in a much elevated product sector. “Walking stick users are currently having fun with their stick purchases,” says Classic Canes’ managing director Charlotte Gillan. “Bright colours, striking patterns and anything with a bit of sparkle is selling very well. We think the public are looking for canes that cheer them up and make a positive statement. Also, sticks featuring British wildlife are selling exceptionally well at the moment, so we expect our new bee, songbird and owl prints to top the best seller lists this Spring. We will also be producing a new trade catalogue in the Summer, where we’ll be launching lots of new patterns and styles to reflect changing fashions.”

Spotlight On... Preschool/Children’s Gifts
Child’s P lay Sustainability is the clear message that stands out in the preschool and children’s gifting sector, alongside creative, innovative and educational products, ranging from plush to puzzles. But that’s not all that’s trending as PG&H discovered, with wooden toys, interactive play and licensed giftware all ticking the boxes. “Like a lot of other sectors, the preschool/children’s space is seeing a movement towards more sustainable, environmentally friendly products, alongside reduced or more recyclable packing which is something we are very passionate about,” says Sue Lockey, owner and director of The Puppet Company. “There is also a shift towards more gender-neutral products, especially at the younger end of the spectrum, which has always been important to us. Dinosaurs, unicorns, superheroes and everything in between should be for children of all ages, and more neutral or unusual colour ways are a great way to encourage this.” Continues Sue: “As a result of lockdown and the pandemic, we have seen a huge increase in toys and products that help children learn through play and encourage their imagination which is part of our core ethos. We have noticed a movement back to more traditional toys in addition to more tactile fabrics to encourage sensory play and engagement which is an area we hope to see grow further in the future. On the sustainability

Inside Out Toys’ marketing director Nikki Garner highlights a groundswell of awareness for making sustainable choices in all walks of life. “Parents, grandparents and friends are becoming ever more aware of choosing sustainable gifts for children - it’s less acceptable today to give cheap plastic toys, and people are looking for alternatives. 2022 is our 10th anniversary and we are delighted to be celebrating with the launch of our new Jumini Woodland collection. The range, side we are very excited to be launching our new Wilberry Cuddlies Eco Collection for Spring 2022 - beautifully made, very cuddly soft toys made out of 100% recycled plastic bottles. This collection follows the launch of our sister company The Puppet Company’s Eco Walking Puppets at the end of last year. Also made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, these incredibly functional puppets have hand access into both the arms and the legs so the user can make them walk, dance and more to further increase learning through play.”

Preschool/Children’s Gifts created in-house, will be manufactured using FSC-certified materials, with the classic wooden toys featuring a set of British woodland creatures encouraging children to recognise and appreciate our native wildlife.” At Hippychick, marketing executive Alex Molyneux says that the company is excited about exclusive new weaning lines and a back-to-school range. “It’s a brand new age group for Hippychick,” highlights Alex. “Sustainability appears to be taking centre stage in 2022, with throwaway toys and clothing becoming a thing of the past. Parents want to buy products that last and can be handed down for years to come.” With innovation the name of the game, PMC’s Felicity Colbert says that the company has seen a huge rise in interactive and educational gifts and toys. “Our personalised gifts are a fun way to introduce home based development and encourage learning through play.” She adds that bright colours and fun, characterbased designs are also proving popular instead of the traditional pink and blue gifts, with these themes being reflected in nursery and children’s gifts for the year ahead. “Additionally, our Animal Alphabet range has been expanded for 2022 to include gifts for mealtimes as well as the nursery and includes a framed print and breakfast items,” Felicity confirms.
What’s Trending For Easter At Plant a Bloomer, Easter is very much a focus for founder Rani Deshpande. “Plant a Bloomer seed paper products are very popular as Easter gifts, because they offer an alternative to chocolate, but are also fun for children,” comments Rani. “Our Plant a Bunny mini gift has been a bestseller for over a decade, and last year we added Plant a Chick to the collection. This Easter we will be completing the trio with the launch of Plant a Lamb, featuring a woolly seed paper lamb, embedded with petals.” Left: A mechanical digger kit from Rex London. Below: boppi Tiny Trekker children’s luggage.
Of course, puzzles and games continue to be winners in the children’s sector, with Rex London’s marketing manager, Anna Williams confirming that over the last couple of years, there has been a surge in the popularity of children’s puzzles and brain-boosting games, as, during the lockdowns, parents tried to keep children entertained while enhancing their learning at the same time. “With the increase in popularity of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) toys over recent years, Rex is continuing its mission of creating screen-free educational

toys with the company’s current offering of construction kits and DIY sets harnessing the power of hydraulics and energy. By allowing children to develop their own curiosity, and satisfy it, it allows them to find enjoyment through the process of discovery and learning,” Anna adds. With summer holidays in mind, Click Europe is hoping that travel will be back with a vengeance. Comments Click Europe’s marketing director Regan Anderton, “parents will be looking to get their pre-schoolers excited for the journey, and visible in the airports, with our boppi Tiny Trekker range of keychain pouches, backpacks and pullalong luggage, with biodegradable casing, an ideal travel companion. They feature 11 character designs, the most popular being unicorn, dinosaur, strawberry and robot.”
Traditional Nostalgia Remains A Winner Emphasising the ongoing importance of nostalgia and longevity, Enesco’s marketing & product director, Helen Cottrill, confirms that the company is having great success with its licensed baby gifting collections and has plans to expand this over the next 12-18 months. “With our Peter Rabbit collection having won several trade and consumer awards since its launch, we are expecting to see some great momentum in 2022. In addition, we will see the first shipments of our Disney Baby gift collection in early 2022, with another licensed baby collection in development for launch in the Summer. It’s very on trend with gender neutral bright, bold patterns and designs.” Additionally, Enesco launched its own plush collection, Kalidou, in January 2022, a global soft toy brand sold by Enesco France for over 20 years. Continues Helen: “we are now expanding to all territories, with this collection of baby, seasonal and pick up plush items featuring many gender neutral designs as well the traditional pink and blue which is also still in demand.” Anthony Temple, managing director of Rainbow Designs, says that over the past two years in particular, parents and those new to parenthood have sought the comfort and security of traditional, much-loved brands. “They feel safe in the knowledge that these brands have stood the test of time and delivered, not only the quality and focus in the products, but the wholesome values that we have all come to know and trust from these heritage brands such as Peter Rabbit, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh and Paddington Bear. “Traditional and wooden toys are very on trend, so we are also introducing some colourful new wooden toys to both the ever-popular Very Hungry Caterpillar and Elmer educational brand ranges. Parents and gift buyers are also becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their purchases so we are constantly working to ensure all our products as sustainable as possible.” Left: Kalidou plush from Enesco launched in January 2022.
