THE HOME OF MARKET LEADING TRADE AWARDS
This Month
Happy holidays everyone, whether you're reading this issue of Progressive Gifts & Home just before or just after Christmas! Hopefully, for our retail readers, Santa brought plenty of cheer in the run-up to Christmas, with suppliers enjoying lots of repeat orders right up until the big day. According to the grapevine, the festive season didn't really kick in until after Halloween, with Black Friday a bit of a damp squib across the board this year as consumers cottoned onto the fact that prices were being 'massaged' to affect the sale prices. Most independent gift retailers were savvy and didn't reduce many, if any, of their products, mindful of the fact that Christmas is all about making money not losing it! Small Business Saturday however, was more of a winner, especially for those retailers who got together with others in their area. See what our insightful Sounding Off columnist Lesley Dunne, owner of Feathering Your Nest in Rayleigh, Essex, has to say on page 27. What else is in this issue? We shine the spotlight on Mother's Day, the next biggest gifting event after Christmas. There's no getting away from it, everyone wants to tell their mum how much she means to them, so we've highlighted some of the trendiest gifts around. (See Mamma We Love You! on pages 37-41). On the licensing front, we reveal some of the big licensed ranges that will be unveiled at the Spring trade shows. (See pages 53-55). Plus, as winter gives way to Spring, we've sniffed out the fragrances that will be making reed diffusers a 'must have'. (Turn to pages 61-65). As for trends, the '70s are back with a twist - far out man! See page 45 for what will be rockin' in gifts and home over the coming months. On a more serious note meanwhile, we take a look at what Brexit will mean for both suppliers and retailers in 2017. Price increases are likely to be the biggest shake up the gift industry has seen for a while, so with the Spring trade shows about to open their doors, we talk to some of the leading companies for their views on pages 23-25. Meanwhile, entries are starting to arrive for The Greats 2017! If you think your shop is a cut above the rest we'd love you to self nominate, or for someone - a supplier or an agent - to nominate you! Winning, or being a finalist, can be a game changer, just ask our past Greats retailers, so fill out The Greats entry form enclosed with this issue, or email your entry to: suem@max-publishing.co.uk. The winners will be revealed at a glittering Greats Awards lunch on Thursday May 4 which takes place in the Ballroom of the Grosvenor House Hotel on London's Park Lane and we'd love to see you there! (See news on page 9). Finally, as we say goodbye to 2016 - a historic year for all of us - we take a look back at the past 12 months in A Year In Gifts, revealing an industry that, despite so much economic and political uncertainty, is as on the ball as ever. Find out who opened what, who merged or acquired who, who won awards, and which celebrities were part of our gift show lives. Here's wishing all of you a very happy, healthy and, hopefully, prosperous New Year!

Nominations are confidential and can be emailed to Ian Hyder at ianh@max-publishing.co.uk . The Greats Awards, owned by Max Publishing, are organised by Progressive Gifts & Home. Gift Shop's 'Racist' Taunts Brand new gift shop Really British (formerly The Scullery Cookshop) which opened in North London's upmarket Muswell Hill at the beginning of December, has found itself the target of local residents. Accused of being 'racist', owner Chris Ostwald, has been forced to take down his Union Jack flags. "The shop is in no way meant to be political or pro-Brexit, but we have had a lot of complaints saying it is, or we are, racist," Chris told his local newspaper, the Ham and High. "People have been coming in and tut tutting and walking out again." Adding fuel to the fire, local residents have been quick to share their thoughts on Muswell HIll and Friends' Facebook page, with one asking: "Do you have to be really British to work in this shop?" Above: Newly opened Really British in Muswell Hill has been in the firing line with local residents.
Designer Wins Copycat Case When Stoke-on-Trent ceramics designer Reiko Kaneko discovered that multiple high street retailer Joy was selling a tableware product called the Egg and Soldiers Train, the designer decided to act decisively, as it looked very much like the company's ceramic Breakfast Express Train. The Egg and Soldiers Train was being imported by Sifcon International which has subsequently agreed not to import any further items of the novelty breakfast set, and both Joy and Sifcon have assured Reiko Kaneko that they were not aware of any issues of design infringement over the item which was being offered as an off-the-shelf item in the Far East. Sifcon has also paid damages to Reiko Kaneko on the items they imported. “I am relieved to have been able to put a stop to the Egg and Soldiers Train being imported," comments founder Reiko Kaneko. "It has certainly encouraged me to stand up for my creative works in the future and I am grateful to ACID and Stone King solicitors to have resolved the matter so effectively,” she added. Adds ACID Affiliate Lawyer Gavin Llewellyn of Stone King: “Designs which are the output of many years of learning a craft and creative thinking can often be ruined by cheap imitations flooding the market which take away their exclusivity and appeal. It is vital to protect this creativity and the viability of the business which depends upon it. The various rights which the law creates to protect designs of all types is complex, but it usually does provide a remedy and I am delighted that Reiko Kaneko was able to achieve a good outcome in this case. It's important in all cases to act quickly and let retailers and importers know about your rights so as to limit ongoing damage to your business.” Above: Reiko Kaneko's original Breakfast Express Train. At Your Service Having spotted a gap in the market, Peace of Mind (PoM) is offering a bespoke, private label jewellery design, manufacturing and packaging service to multiple retailers, wholesalers and other companies looking for premium promotional products. "Many of our customers want a completely unique look but don't have the resources to design jewellery, or the contacts to have it manufactured at factory prices and that's where we can help," says PoM's md Simon Beck. He emphasises that the company has a key advantage over many other jewellery designers and importers in that it owns and manages its own manufacturing facilities in the Far East, where it trades ethically and responsibly. "Relatively small runs of 200 plus pieces are achievable," adds Simon. Visit www.pom925 Above: PoM is offering a bespoke jewellery service.

High Street Cheer According to the latest BDO High Street Saes Tracker, high streets had their best November in six years. November's year-on-year growth of 1.7% was also the best overall monthly growth in 14 months. Sales of homewares grew for the fifth month in succession, recording a double digit increase of 11.7%. But BDO's head of retail and wholesale, Sophie Michael, urged caution. "Consumer spending may appear to be robust for now, as many people are having a final shopping spree while the economy is exceeding growth expectations. But we are facing a year of unprecedented political, social and economic uncertainty both at home and overseas," she stated.

Welcome To Weybridge Gift, homewares and stationery company, Bluebell 33 has recently opened its first retail outlet, based in Weybridge. "It truly is an emporium of lovely things and we have had the most amazing reaction from our customers who gasped when we unveiled the window and have compared it to something from Harry Potter to a vintage store in New York!" enthuses co-owner Karen Brown. "Praise indeed, and just how we wanted it," she states. "We love the old Bond Street style stores and the whole NY curiosity shop vibe. With the building being Edwardian it totally lent itself to this style, and we're chuffed to bits as we renovated the whole building from head to toe! The run up to Christmas has been brilliant so far for us, and the support from the local community has been astounding. Above: The new flagship Bluebell store in Weybridge. I think people really get the shopping local concept. Local stores and restaurants in our street have been amazing too, bringing little ‘welcome neighbour’ gifts! It's a lovely community."
Desert Island Castaway Leading Stoke-on-Trent pottery manufacturer Emma Bridgewater was recently interviewed on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, where she talked about setting up her eponymous company in Stoke when many manufacturers were closing or going overseas. Other reminiscences included her mother’s eclectic plate collection and the family’s lack of matching plates! Queen's Award Jeremy's Day In The Sun
Below: Jeremy Corner, md of Blue Eyed Sun, was presented with his Queen's Award for International Trade by Susan Pyper, lord lieutenant of the county. His wife Jo, founder of the company, is shown on the left.
While Spring Fair will see him taking to the stage to share his industry knowledge, Jeremy Corner, md of Blue Eyed Sun, and vice chairman of The Giftware Association, was on the receiving end recently. Having attended a prestigious Queen's Award event at Buckingham Palace during the summer, Jeremy was recently honoured to be presented with a Queen's Award for International Trade by Susan Pyper, the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, at the company's new factory in Burgess Hill. Other dignataries at the event included the High Sheriff of West Sussex, the Mayor of Burgess Hill, the Chairman of West Sussex County Council and the Chairman of Mid-Sussex County Council. “We are thrilled to have won this prestigious award and were honoured that such a distinguished group of local dignitaries came to celebrate with us, along with many wonderful customers, suppliers, family and friends of Blue Eyed Sun," enthused Jeremy. "The award is an amazing tribute to the dedication and hard work of our fantastic team.” The company was founded in a tiny bedsit in Brighton in 2000 by Jeremy's artist wife Jo. The company now employs 16 staff and sells tens of thousands of handmade cards every week in over 20 countries around the world. "International expansion has been particularly impressive over the last four years," states Jeremy.
A Lucky TV Break Thanks to Sarah Ward, chief executive of The Giftware Association, member Nathalie Cuffley, co-founder of year-old manufacturer Lobster Homewares, has become a TV star! When Sarah spotted Autumn Fair exhibitor Nathalie, she suggested that she should have a sewing machine on her stand to show visitors how she made her aprons which feature integrated oven gloves. As luck would have it, a crew from London video agency Hub were at the show, spotted Nathalie's stand and heard more about both Nathalie's back story and her company. As a result, Nathalie is now one of 12 aspiring manufacturing enterprises to appear on Pop Up Start Up, created by CNBC, Alibaba.com and Hub. The brand new show will be broadcast in overseas territories as well as the UK. The series debuted on December 16, with the date for the Lobster Homewares episode yet to be confirmed. Above: Lobster Homeware's integrated apron. The programmes follow the 12 enterprises Left: Nathalie Cuffley. who will go head to head to win a £20,000 cash prize, with two candidates per episode given seed money and challenged to mass produce and sell their products in a pop-up shop. The contestant who makes the most profit each week wins the £20,000 prize. Nathalie started out from her kitchen table 14 years ago. “But by 2013, the stress of constantly working, raising my three kids alone and trying to run my sewing business was just too much. I collapsed with a heart attack, but, to my joy, my younger brother Alec came back into my life after we had drifted apart. I had never made an apron for Alec, so I showed him one and he said we have got to do something with them.” She says that without Alec, a director of Lobster Homeware, the company would not exist. “He gathered a team of people and, over the course of a year, they have turned my dream into a reality.”
Northern Newcomers Scotland's Trade Fair Spring, the main buying platform for retailers in the North and Scotland, will see plenty of new names, with a third of the show's exhibitors being newcomers to the exhibition. Organisers Springboard Events highlight that fashion, accessories, textiles and clothing are particularly strong this year. The Craft Gallery, launched last year, will be returning, with the Launch Gallery showcasing young, innovative companies. Also returning will be The Orkney Aisles featuring a group of producers from the area, as well as the Best Product Awards. Scotland's Trade Show Spring will run in conjunction with Scotland's Speciality Food Show, and will be taking place at the SECC, Glasgow, from January 22-24. Giving & Living's Coastal Path feature will be hosting the Salcombe Dairy ice cream boat among other attractions at the show which takes place at Westpoint, near Exeter, from January 15-18. "Visitors will have the opportunity to sample the company's award winning ice cream as they walk around the show," confirms Mike Anderson, md of show organisers Hale Events. "In addition, some of the British makers will be showing off their products, be it how the products are made, or displays of how they work. There will be some live demonstrations too," adds Mike. A lucky visitor will also go home with a hamper of South West goodies donated by Taste of the West. (See Here Comes Summer on page 51). Visit www.givingliving.co.uk

Home of Homes Dunelm Acquires Worldstores Group
Below: In addition to new stores, Dunelm will expand its online influence with the acquisition of Worldstores Group.
Dunelm is expanding its home offering with the acquisition of the Worldstores Group, including Achica, in a deal worth £8.5m. Established in 2008, Worldstores claims to be the UK’s largest online retailer of products for the home (including home accessories) and garden, selling over 500,000 products. At the end of 2015, Worldstores purchased Achica, the members-only online store offering housewares, homewares and furniture, often with large discounts and flash sales. Dunelm’s chief executive, John Browett confirmed that the acquisition of the group presents "an opportunity to accelerate the growth of our internet operation, more than doubling its size.” He elaborated: "Between the store network, broad product range and strong brand name that Dunelm has built, and Worldstores' extensive homewares and furniture offer and unique platform for next-day delivery, we will strengthen our leading position as the UK's 'home of homes'." Dunelm predicts that its new acquisition will generate benefits of up to £10m a year through efficiencies such as sharing product ranges and synchronising terms and deliveries. The Worldstores Group was reportedly due to go into administration if an acquisition deal had not been reached. ● Dunelm’s new store openings include the former Beales site in Horsham (November) and the former BHS site in Solihull which opened in mid December.
Naturally Stylish New Logo It's all change for the Parlane logo which has been redesigned by Paul Felton who created the re-branding of The Giftware Association. The company says that the design brings Parlane up-to-date and is more in line with its current values. "We wanted to reinforce the message that many of our products are exclusive to the brand, designed in-house and crafted by hand using a huge variety of natural materials," explains md Mike Burgess. "The new strapline ‘Where Style Comes Naturally’ upholds this fundamental aspect, while the logo is contemporary and clean, reflecting Parlane’s fashionable and yet timeless collections." The new logo will be unveiled on the Parlane stand at Spring Fair, Hall 8, Stand C8-D7.

The company will be launching over 50 Village Candle fragrances in large, medium and small sized jars, as well as wax melts, votives, reeds, car fresheners, drawer liners, sachets, and more. "We're delighted to have Village Candle in our portfolio and very much look forward to introducing it to buyers at trade shows in 2017 and beyond," says Xystos director Tom Sykes. Village Candle, which is family owned, is renowned for its dual wick technology which was pioneered by Paul Aldrich, ceo, who founded the company in the early '90s. In addition, Xystos has also signed an agreement to distribute ScentChips colourful wax chips which release a fragrance when melted in a burner - in the UK & Ireland. The company will be launching a new range at Harrogate Christmas & Gift in January, which will give consumers the opportunity to create their own personal blend of fragrances. Says Xystos director Tom Sykes: “This is a delightful addition to our flame and fragrance portfolio. It’s lots of fun and will give shoppers the chance to be creative and experiment with different combinations.” Xystos will stock two ranges: The Basic Collection and Extended Collection, both of which comprise 36 scents. ScentChips will be available in one-fragrance bags which can be sold like pick ‘n mix sweets, with Xystos supplying retailers with a separate stand for each collection divided into 36 squares. "ScentChips are lots of fun and will give shoppers the chance to be creative and experiment with different combinations," says Tom.

Celebrating 70 Years Housing Units Invests In Its Future
NEWS IN BRIEF Below: Housing Units prides itself on a bespoke customer experience and includes top-hatted doormen who meet and greet every customer.
One retailer that's really looking forward to 2017 is Nick Fox, ceo of Housing Units, Manchester. He has revealed plans for the company's 70th anniversary year, which will include the start of plans to invest £5m into the expansion of our logistics and retail facilities. Early in 2017, work will commence to expand the store’s distribution centre, reflecting significant growth in store and retail sales, followed by the expansion of the store's retail space (by 26,000 sq ft) and Housing Units’ catering offering, with a brand-new dining experience. “We hope to stimulate significant growth in our online sales division while building a larger retail park, offering visitors a greater range of services and experiences,” confirms Nick. The award winning, family-run home furnishing store is also planning a whole year of celebrations with staff and customers beginning in March.” Nick explained: “A variety of competitions will run throughout 2017 in store and on social media, focused on rewarding customers for their loyalty over the years. There will also be a number of historical presentations to celebrate changes within Housing Units and the wider industry since the store was founded in 1947.“ Renowned for its TV advertisements filmed at the store, Housing Units’ most recent commercial, ‘What a difference’ has been adapted for a 60-second 70th anniversary edition, which will air from March. Nick described reaction to the commercial as “fantastic,” elaborating: “Blending glitz and glamour with visuals of friends and family spending quality time together appealed to our audience.” Reflecting on Housing Units’ success over the past 70 years, Nick said: “We haven’t been afraid to diversify, embracing a multi-channel offering with two hugely successful food outlets and an online presence. We engage with thousands of customers each day on Twitter and Facebook, enjoying the opportunity to keep customers informed and answer queries via digital media platforms.” Nick adds: “There is a great deal of passion and energy within our team, and this helps the creative and decision-making processes.”

❐ According to a recent survey by IG Design Group, men put more effort than women into wrapping Christmas presents and writing cards for their partner, with men (41%) putting the most effort into this, compared to women (26%). However, women start their Christmas shopping two weeks earlier than men. ❐ A new Paysafe survey reveals that British men and women spend roughly the same amount on Christmas presents, notably £388 each - significantly more than their counterparts in other European countries with up to 52% of UK presents for the festive season ordered online. ❐ RetailNext, which tracks retail shopper traffic, predicted that the top two biggest in-store shopping days would be 'Super Saturday’ on December 17 and Friday December 23. ❐ Over 400 guests attended the BJGFF Benevolent Society Ball at the St John's Hotel in Solihull at the beginning of December. Speaking Up For Retail Bira Joins Minister’s Round Table Alan Hawkins, ceo of bira, represented independent retailers at the recent retail round table hosted by small business minister Margot James. The meeting also included senior representatives from some of the UK’s largest retailers including Asda, IKEA, John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Boots, along with Andrew Percy, high streets minister, and Jane Ellison, financial secretary to the Treasury. As well as gathering feedback from the retail sector, discussions focused on the future of the retail sector and Brexit (including opportunities, employment issues and supply chain concerns). Following the meeting, Margot James commented: “I am delighted to host a meeting of the country’s top retailers to discuss how we can all work together to build on success and seize new opportunities. Retailers play a key role in our economy and I welcome the opportunity to discuss Above: Bira’s Alan Hawkins brought the how we can work together to shape the future of retail in the UK.” challenges of independent retailers to Reflecting on the importance of attending at the meeting - with the government’s attention at a recent retail round table. independent retailers making up more than 65% of UK retail outlets by number - Alan reported: “On behalf of our members, I declared more support was needed for independent retailers to benefit from online sales and that small shops want a level playing field in terms of property rates. We also want to see more considered timeframes for incoming new legislation and taxes across government departments.” He added: “2017 is going to be a challenging year for retail because of the economic climate alone and increasing prices, but we’ve also got increased costs in the form of property rates increases (for some) and increased people costs in the living wage and pensions for smaller retailers as well as the Apprenticeship Levy for larger retailers.” He emphasised: “No retailer can simply absorb all these costs, something must give. Bira is working hard to ensure the real impact of these moves are recognised by Government and campaigning for real change, particularly in respect of the woefully outdated rating system. Radical change is required. Tinkering at the edges is simply not enough.”

Industry Issue: Brexit
Margin Truth
The Of
For both retailers and consumers, 2017 is likely to be a challenging year, with higher inflation on the horizon seeing the likelihood of people tightening their purse strings. For the gift industry, the fall-out from a plummeting £pound and other currency fluctuations has meant that importers are having to pay significantly more for their goods, costs that some have already started passing onto their retail customers, with others holding prices until the Spring. So could price rises be a tipping point in 2017? Will companies offering products that have been Made in Britain see business increase? PG&H takes a long hard look at the current situation, and talks to the trade about the implications. Just as everything was getting back nicely to pre-recession days - economic growth, positive predictions - wham!, along came Brexit and took the wind out of the sales for many businesses, especially those that import from the Far East. As could be seen by the fact that retail shares plunged immediately after the vote, confidence was understandably shaken by fear of the unknown. While Brexit has, so far, not been as dire as the Remainers were predicting, it's the fact that a plummeting £pound has sent or will send costs spiralling for importers, impacting in a way that is sure to significantly shake up the gift trade over the coming months as many importers, and companies whose component parts come from outside of the UK, revise their pricing strategies. From as early as last July, on the back of Brexit, some suppliers were already hiking prices, making many gift indies concerned as to what lies ahead when the tranche of Spring trade fairs get ready to open their doors in January and February. Are they sustainable from a retail perspective? And will retailers be
forced to pass them onto their customers, rattling the sweet spots of £20 and under, £10 and under and £5 and under? Alternatively, will gift retailers look to companies who manufacture their products in the UK and re-think who they buy from? With retail on the high street the toughest it's ever been, it, will inevitably, come down to margins.
The gift industry has been through many recessions and tough trading times where businesses, suppliers and retailers, have had to be leaner and meaner. But with greater financial pressures on retailers today than at any other time, largely due to government legislation, they are understandably feeling nervous. For gift retailers in the tourist hot spots, while sterling is in decline, hopefully 2017 will again see record international visitor numbers, with gifts bought as take-homes for friends and family. For other retailers where footfall is challenging, price hikes, coupled with non-negotiables, such as business rates, the National Living Wage and pensions, could well take them to a tipping point. The £pound will, at some point, recover, but due to market uncertainly, it's unlikely to be in the short term. Therefore, for many in the industry, on both sides of the fence, tough decisions are going to have to be made.
Stable Prices “While all our handmade crystal is still made here in the UK, our raw materials and packaging are supplied from Europe," comments Richard Halliday, commercial director of Dartington Crystal. "In addition, we sell many successful glass collections that are manufactured in the EU and so those costs too have risen, as a result of the exchange rate shift. On a positive note however," continues Richard, "the post Brexit emotion from our retailers and their customers now seems to favour us as a British based brand and manufacturer. "In 2017 we celebrate our 50th year and will be launching a high percentage of 'Made in UK', together with a lot of 'flag flying' for British made products. We are able to offer a reliable supply at a stable cost without having to commit to big volumes and risk. So we are possibly better positioned to face any changes in buying habits as well as fostering the feel good factor of buying British." Industry Issue: Brexit
Forward Planning "At Puckator, we have been in a fairly fortunate position as we made a significant investment in forward buying $US dollars just prior to Brexit," comments Matt Shaw, sales director, Puckator. "This has enabled us to hold prices until Spring 2017. However, with the $US dollar v £pound exchange looking set to stay at an unprecedented figure for at least the medium term, price rises cannot be ruled out in the future." On the plus side, Matt points out that the Chinese RMB has also declined in value against the $US by 10% in the last year, "so that has enabled us to negotiate better prices with our suppliers, therefore offsetting some of the negativity relating to sterling's decline. We are also fortunate that investment in our European business has meant a huge increase in sales to the EU, and sterling's weakening against the euro has benefitted us there. Finally, in terms of pricing, with multi nationals such as Apple increasing retail prices in the UK, it has raised awareness on why prices are increasing to the general public and that, at least, makes retailers accept increases more easily than they would perhaps otherwise." Continues Matt: "The other big question about Brexit is whether gift importers and distributors will continue to be able to send their goods to EU customers free of tariffs and customs charges. This is especially important to Puckator for the reasons already mentioned. Fortunately, we have already set up companies and offices in both Spain and Italy, so if the UK is not a member of the single market in two years time, we would aim to service our European customers from either our Spanish or Italian bases. With this in mind, we are already researching warehousing possibilities in both locations, as two years goes pretty quickly and forward planning is essential. Whatever the outcome of Brexit, I think British business is well equipped to deal with it."
Uncertain Times "As a UK manufacturer that exports 70% of turnover, of which a sizeable amount is to EU countries, Brexit is of utmost concern to us here at Dunoon," says sales director Peter Smith. "Long term, once Brexit takes place, we are fearful not only of tariffs and duties being imposed onto our products being sold into the EU, but also of the likelihood of an increase in regulations and red tape. I can remember years ago that Finland, before it was a member of the EU, imposed import protectionist measures onto ceramic goods. Once they joined the EU these regulations were removed and since then, we have enjoyed good business in this country. Who is to say they or other nations won’t impose more regulations once Brexit takes place?" However, Peter adds that every cloud has a silver lining. "Thanks to the referendum result, the £pound has weakened making our goods cheaper abroad. As a consequence, we are enjoying an upturn in our export business. Within the UK, many of our competitors are UK importers/distributors/ wholesalers, and I would expect costs of their goods to be higher as a result of the weaker pound. Therefore, many retailers that we currently don’t work with may take another look at Dunoon. But in a nutshell, these are very uncertain times. We do keep in contact with the British Ceramic Confederation (BCC) and Members of Parliament regarding developments for Brexit and are giving them our viewpoint. As a UK manufacturer, long term, we just want a fair level playing field with our European neighbours." Left: Peter Smith, sales director, Dunoon.
A Challenge As Well As An Opportunity "When I saw what happened to the exchange rate in the 24 hours following the Brexit decision, it was obvious that it was going to be a challenging time," says Richard Wood, sales director UK & Ireland, Bolsius UK. "If we look at the exchange rate day to day, by comparison to where we started the year, there is an 11% like-for-like difference in straight margin reduction, so there are definitely some challenges as to an EU based, European euro currency orientated manufacturer supplying to a sterling market." Continues Richard: "Bolsius however, is in the fortunate position in that they are the largest candle manufacturer in Europe, and have doubled their business from 110 euros to just under 220 euros in the last eight years. There is some export outside of the EU, but the majority is within the EU, with the step for Bolsius now being to bring that success to the UK. However, we view the challenges posed by Brexit as an opportunity for 2017, because if you're a smaller manufacturer or smaller supplier, either from China or from Europe, you have the same challenges ahead due to fluctuating currencies. Will it get to parity as to where it was in 2016? No-one has a crystal ball, and I think that most companies have made the assumption that it's unlikely over the next 12 months. So with Bolsius being such a large company, and the UK being a relatively small proportion of that, the risk for Bolsius is quite minor. But nevertheless, it is a risk." Above: Richard Wood, sales director, Bolsius.
Minimal Increases "Since Brexit, at Lesser & Pavey, we have kept any price increases to an absolute minimum and have been working harder than ever on developing new products," says Julian Hunt, md of Lesser & Pavey. "With all our experience, resources and expertise, we have been developing many hundreds of exciting, high quality innovative products, and firmly believe that what we have to offer for 2017 offers the gift industry fantastic value for money which will allow our customers to offer better products at pre-Brexit prices." Adds Julian: "We are very optimistic about business in 2017 and just want to put Brexit behind us and get on with our business!" Right: Julian Hunt, md, Lesser & Pavey.

LESLEY DUNNE
SOUNDING OFF
Black Friday Blues Black Friday/Small Business Saturday. They couldn' t be more different says Lesley Dunne, owner of gift shop Feathering Your Nest in Rayleigh, Essex. While one event significantly impacted on Christmas sales at the end of November, the other positively encouraged people to ' shop local' in early December, something that Lesley couldn' t "Love it or loathe it, Black Friday, like Donald Trump, is here to stay. I wonder how many small business gift and card retailers actually participated this year? Answers on the back of a Christmas card please. At Feathering Your Nest, we paired up a few lines we wanted to clear. Keeping an eye on the margins, we reduced some end of lines and made a little bit of a fuss on social media to encourage footfall. Moreover, we used it as a talking point with our customers to whoop them up for even more urgent Christmas spending. Why would we have wanted to reduce stock on Friday November 25 when customers were in the throes of their Christmas shopping frenzy? According to a survey by The Market Creative company, shoppers were meant to have dug deep for Black Friday bargains, although, as it turned out, the event was much quieter than anticipated and significantly down on previous years. Yet along with Halloween, bridal showers, baby showers and push presents, American's Black Friday has already become an established, annual event for bargain hungry UK Christmas shoppers. As a retailer, it's hard not to cast your eye back to Christmasses past, where many of us would watch newsreels of crazy shopaholics donning woolly hats, climbing into sleeping bags, and drinking from Thermos flasks, as they queued for days outside Harrods and Selfridges. I can still remember watching lines of frenzied customers heading for those elusive bargains, and oh how those tills rang out. Happy days! It seems to me that consumers have exchanged the Christmas rush and the
chaos of the January sales for late November delirium. Thermos flasks have given way to mugs of tea, woolly hats to PJ's, along with a blue glow from a tablet or iPhone at midnight, while sitting tucked up on the sofa. Some people will brave the shopping centres, retail parks and possibly the high streets. But, despite muted sales for stores, the message still seems to be that Black Friday is the time to buy lots of lovely Christmas pressies at discounted prices. So much for Christmas shopping traditions. Big multi-nationals can, of course, afford to make the deepest cuts. To maximise sales in the season of goodwill, their offers go on longer and cut deeper, lasting all week,
maybe two. So how does Black Friday affect small businesses? Well, 86% of 18-24 year olds - Millennials - surveyed said they were waiting for Black Friday to buy their gifts. They are bargain savvy and don't truck with loyalty. If you haven't got it now, and at the cheapest price, then forget it, they've moved on! Also, the consumers of the future appear to be blowing their budgets earlier. To be honest, many of Feathering Your Nest's customers finish their Christmas shopping by the end of October. So how will retailers and suppliers get rid of those end of lines, over

stocks, stuff that just didn't work if the times are a changing? Fortunately, it's Small Business Saturday to the rescue! The brainchild of American Express, it was introduced in 2010 to kick start the economy during the recession. It's a grass roots campaign which urges consumers to patronise small businesses and show their support. It is supported by the government, and there's even a tour bus to help100 different small businesses grow. I have participated over the years as 'shopping local' is something I'm passionate about. Locally employed people shop local, creating a greater sense of community. I have spent many valuable hours canvassing our local independent shops to celebrate what we do and join the campaign as it's a great way to thank our customers for supporting us throughout the year. It encourages towns to come together. Yet it remains hard to get other retailers to see the bigger picture. One or two of the shops in our town have made the effort in the past, but really, it's a damp squib. How can we change things unless people get together? So, we just do our own thing now. We say lots of 'thank you's' to our lovely customers, and have sweets, treats and possibly one or two offers on the day. It feels great to say 'thank you'. We wouldn't have our business without our customers. So regardless of changing shopping habits, here at Feathering Your Nest, we've had to learn to adapt and grow in order to survive." A Take On The Lakes
It's been a whirlwind 12 months for home fragrancing manufacturer Wax Lyrical based in the Lake District. Having been bought by Portmeirion Group in May, the company also underwent an exciting rebranding, and finished 2016 by celebrating its 36th birthday as well as its 10th anniversary of being purchased from Blyth Inc. With exciting new Spring/Summer collections ready to be unveiled at Spring Fair, md Jo Barber tells PG&H what the coming year holds for a company that loves nothing more than to fanfare its Britishness along with its Northern roots. Given its stunning location of Lindal in Furness in Cumbria, it's easy to see what drives the success of Wax Lyrical, arguably the UK's largest manufacturer of home fragrance. As well as being a well established, successful, British based company, with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that was boosted by a £1m investment in 2015, the brand is a magnet not just for locals and tourists, but also for a hungry export market.
Following last year's acquisition by Portmeirion Group, another proud and successful British manufacturing company "a perfect synergy" states md Jo Barber Wax Lyrical continues to play to its strengths by trading in the Lakes, inspired by its breathtaking surroundings in terms of new fragrances, packaging, PoS and merchandising. So much so in fact, that for Spring 2017, the company will be launching a brand new Wax Lyrical Lakes range featuring a candle, reed diffuser and diffuser refill, recreating the fragrance notes found in local areas. ● Jo Barber, md of Wax Lyrical, joined the company

(then Colony) 17 years ago having previously worked for several blue chip companies. In addition to creating its own ranges, Wax Lyrical also produces fragrances for some of the world's leading luxury brands. Wax Lyrical was acquired by Portmeirion Group in May 2016. The company currently comprises 130 strong team members on site at its HQ in Lindal in Furness in Cumbria. Wax Lyrical also has two standalone retail outlets: one at its Lindal in Furness head office and the other at The Lowry in Manchester.

Featuring evocative colourways of blush pink, soft green, ivory, navy and grey, the packaging is a mix of pastels and deeper colours, with a hand drawn image of the Lakes, in gold, on every product. Six fragrances - Lakes, Meadow, Fells, Woodland, Hillside and Coast - enable visitors to take a little bit of the Lake District home with them, while for those that haven't been, it's an opportunity to get acquainted with one of Britain's most scenic and visited locations. In fact, Jo confides that Fells is already her favourite fragrance. "The gold embossed drawing on the packaging shows one of the Fells, the narrow Striding Edge en route to Helvelyn which is one of my most thrilling walks. It's extremely challenging yet breathtaking at the same time!" Also new for Spring is the Equilibrium Spa range, made from 100% natural wax, which features the introduction of a brand new 100ml two tone reed diffuser. "It's the

In Profile: Wax Lyrical coming together of two fragrance blends which mix and then separate, with each layer fully fragranced," explains Jo. Meanwhile, a further new launch for the company is a stand-out reed diffuser in the licensed RHS Vintage Posy collection. Explains Jo: "It features a solar flower with a cotton wick which is an extremely efficient way to fragrance the home as well as being a really pretty decoration. For us, it's an evolution in reeds, with the solar flower also found in our new British Garden gifting range, which features three fragrances bluebell, lavender and rose in feminine style gift packs." Also strengthening the company's reed diffuser offer is a 180ml diffuser which has been launched in the Colony range. But even that's not all. In the premium Fired Earth range, new for 2017 are feminine fragrances Darjeeling and Damask Rose - also among Jo's favourite fragrances for Spring/Summer. Adding to the glamour, all fragrances in the collection are available in luxurious new 500ml reed diffusers featuring black fibre reeds. Talking of fragrances, Jo says she's seeing an increase in premium products. "Consumers are always looking for value and quality, as well as more sophisticated fragrances and interesting ways to fragrance their homes, hence the introduction of our new reed diffuser flower option and our new two tone diffuser. Plus, in the RHS collection, we have also introduced a new embossed, fragranced plaster plaque for use
in both homes and cars, which can be topped up with a fragrance mist spray." On the candle front, there are new triple wicks in Colony and the Kitchen Garden ranges to enhance the fragrance throw, with Spring/Summer also seeing the launch of a brand new Colony refill candle - a first for the company. "It's a new trend that's very important to consumers as it reduces packaging waste allowing people to re-use their containers," Jo explains. "It also gives them the option to replace the candle or to re-fill it with a new fragrance." And even that's not all! Another exciting new launch is Enter-Tin-Ment, a humorous addition to the Wax Lyrical portfolio. "The four candle tins have a vintage take and are a great pick up comedy line for retailers," Jo highlights, “with keepsake miniature candle tins also to be found in the Wax Lyrical range. With so much new product unveiling for Spring/Summer, Jo is nevertheless quick to re-assure that Wax Lyrical's popular Made In England brand hasn't been neglected. "There's a new Mango & Passionfruit fragrance launching for Spring which really complements the other fragrances in the collection," she comments. As the new product ranges roll out, in house, the teams will be busy working on the new collections for the
second half of the year. With Christmas 2016 done and dusted, the company is already working on exclusive ranges for Christmas 2017. "Across the board in gifts, gift sets and Advents are really coming through, but especially within the home fragrancing sector," says Jo. Everything is developed in house, with fragrances created by top perfume houses in Europe. "To be honest, we think about fragrance all the time," Jo smiles. Commenting on the home fragrance sector per se, Jo says that although it remains highly competitive and is continuing to grow, she believes that competition is a good incentive for innovation. "It means that as a manufacturer, we are always striving to do better. It makes us even more determined to go out and find those niches, something that's possible thanks to the 'can do' attitude of the highly skilled people who work here." Looking to the next 12 months, she says that the company will continue to consolidate and build on what it does well. "We'll be taking that into new ranges for the UK market and also strengthening our offer for the overseas markets where we currently export to over 40 countries. Plus, we'll be upping the ante on our PoS material, looking at different styles and more forward thinking ways of advertising our products using less in store space. And we also have some stylish new fixtures being unveiled for 2017. As always, retailers remain our priority and we will be continuing to look at all the different ways that we can support them."

MammaWe
LoveYou!
Aside from Christmas, Mother's Day is the next big gift opportunity of the year, allowing gift retailers to tap into a very special, emotional occasion. With jewellery and fashion accessories vying with home fragrancing and ceramics, it's an exciting time for retailers to stock up on making mums of all ages and stages know how loved and cherished they are. Falling on Sunday March 26, this year's celebration is well positioned between Valentine's and Easter to really get the tills ringing! How do you tell your mum (mam, mamma, mummy, mother, step mum) you love her on Mother's Day? Definitely with big hugs and kisses, breakfast in bed, and a day off from the household chores. There's a card of course, either bought or handmade, soppy or serious, and almost always a gift, varying in price from a token item from little ones to something a bit more special from older and adult children. “Mother’s Day is a key date in the giftware calendar and very important for independent retailers,” states Paul Hooker, commercial director for Joe Davies. “The huge trend towards Equilibrium sentiment jewellery is continuing, with mum, as well as grandma and nan messages already pre-sold at very high levels. We have several fantastic new designs and have completely
redesigned the sentiment packaging to make it even more special." Paul also highlights that traditional Mother’s Day products such as sentiment photo frames, mugs and gifting ceramics, with sentimental messages, are still a banker. "Also, while very new to the market, LED frames and products are trending and hotly tipped, with several ‘mum’ designs featuring in our extensive collection." Suppliers agree that when it comes to Mother's Day, it's the personal touch that counts. "These are the gifts that mothers can look back at in years to come, gifts that conjure up wonderful family memories," says Alice Hughes, marketing and PR assistant at Wild & Wolf. "For example, we have recently launched a fun, playful collection of photo frames with Polaroid featuring bold, wooden lacquered wall frames with space for multiple family memories, as well as smaller gift-able glitter filled desk frames. Mums can also

relax with our Mumtastic vanilla blossom scented candle collection from Happy Jackson, or, for those that are into beauty products, we've launched nail lacquers and lip balms as part of our Folklore range. Both products have matching packaging focusing on Scandi-inspired animals and fruity scents, with a lip balm and a nail lacquer in the same design making a lovely small gift." Dominique Fracasso-Stroud, director, La De Da Living, concurs."Every mum is unique in a different way, which is why a personalised gift is always a lovely touch. Memories, special messages and moments create a gift that will be treasured forever". Sentiment, of course, has always had a big role to play when it comes to Mother's Day. "We're finding that loving sentiments are the most popular, as mums are our most loved and cherish relative," states Thomas O'Brien, operations director at Boxer Gifts. "Our Starlight bottles have great sentiments which sell all year for mothers and mums, with the sentiment fitting in perfectly for this very special occasion." Also offering giftware with sentiment is East of India, with director Anne Spreckley confirming that anything animal related is sure to be a winner. "In true East of India style, we have combined our hand drawn animal images with fun sayings," she explains. "This gives us a range that consists of stylish yet useful products that mums will love." include cosmetic bags, purses, shopping bags, aprons, tea towels and feather filled linen cushions). As Helen Shield, director of marketing at Enesco, points out, the scope for a Mother’s Day gift is endless, with the company's January 2017 launch featuring many gift packaged homewares and accessories lines that are ideal for mums. "Nevertheless, we do still focus on very specific products with beautiful sentiments such as the new Willow Tree figurine For Always," Helen highlights. Above: East of India's collection of giftware for mums combines animals with witty sayings. Below: The new Willow Tree figurine For Always by Susan Lordi which captures the relationship between a mother and child.
As Lesser & Pavey’s md Julian Hunt says, Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity for gift retailers to maximise their Springtime profits, with longer lasting gifts of affection making eye catching windows. "Mother's Day is another marketing opportunity for retailers to maximise on, through moving gifts for mothers and grandparents closer to the front of the store. This enables them to make the occasion a feature of their retail window space." With so much high street and online competition, almost on a par with Christmas, it's safe to say that winners will be the gift retailers who get their Mother's Day window and in store displays out early.
For something floral, but with a difference, Mike Burgess, md of Parlane, highlights that the company's mini potted plants have been hugely popular for the gift market, especially with Mother’s Day in mind. "Faux topiary and potted plants are exceptionally ontrend at the moment," highlights Mike. Meanwhile, One Button's boutique collection of new Hem&Edge funky umbrellas is going down a storm, says the company's creative director Amanda Angless. "Keeping all things traditional, our brollies are long handled and reveal loads of beautiful colourful sections. They ooze Fred and Ginger nostalgia but with a chic, modern twist! Bought as a gift, mums everywhere will be able to embrace showers in style." Above: Parlane's faux shrubs come in two sizes and different varieties. Left: A stylish umbrella from Hem&Edge.
Price Point Perfect From babies and teenagers to students and adults, Mother's Day gift givers come in all shapes and sizes, with a wide range of price points needed to take into account not only ages but financial status too. "Retailers have a tricky job providing a gift solution for so many different types of mum, ranging from those who want to celebrate their mum in a traditional way to those who want to have a bit of fun with their mum on her special day. Hitting key price points, as well as providing a well merchandised, well thought out offer, will ensure that gifts are added to every card purchase," says Sue Grant, marketing manager of Widdop And Co. Their ideal Mother's Day gift is going to be something personal, perhaps a memento remembering happy family times," he comments. "This could be a family photo in a pretty frame, and so, with mothers in mind, we have introduced a new range for 2017 called Papillon." At the other end of the price spectrum, Puckator's Sofia Lindell says that the company has noticed that the average spend seems to be increasing for Mother's Day. "In the past, the under £10 category did very well, and although that is still the case, we're seeing products in the £20£30 price range really surging in terms of popularity. Also, retailers seem to be looking to get their stock in earlier than ever this year." At the mid-price level, Lorena Golfetto, director, Gaeltag, suggests retailers should look to gifts at £20 and under. "Our ideas include a tea-for-one teapot and cup from our Emily Stracey range, just the job for breakfast in bed. Or, for something stronger, we have a range of Paper Salad decorated wine glasses. Plus, as a lasting testament to the love and support given by mums there's our new You are an Angel range of figurines with titles that include ‘First my mother, forever my friend’ and ‘The love between mother and daughter is forever’." Pretty In Pink After the red hues of Valentine's Day, pink remains a strong theme for Mother's Day, says Lesser & Pavey's md Julian Hunt, who says it's definitely a more precious occasion. He highlights that dedicated gift items are a must for mums, such as the company's new range Always and Forever, commenting: "Why give flowers which will be gone in a week when you can give a gift that will last forever?" Right: A Hanging heart from Lesser & Pavey's Always & Forever range.
What's Trending
● "Trends include blacks teamed with pretty pastel colours and a touch of luxury, plus gifts personalised with mum, mummy or mother. We also anticipate a surge on gifts for grandma." Katie Burt, marketing, Really Good ● "Neons, sparkle and fun abound, with foil finishes featuring copper too. Glamorous touches include glitter, applied to wood,
glass and ceramics." Sue Grant, marketing manager at Widdop And Co. ● "A key trend, especially for Mother’s Day, is a nude colour palette. Whether it's soft pastel pinks, copper foiling or a blush, it stems from the ongoing trend of metallic golds and rose golds, complementing colour palettes such as soft pinks." Luca Bridges, senior sales & marketing co-ordinator, Caroline Gardner. ● "The giftware market is currently tapping into a trend that originated in the States: positive affirmation. Products include handwritten text in sparkles, gold foil or bright colours, plus bite size sayings telling mums they are wonderful,

fabulous and amazing!" Clare Davis, creative director, Clare Davis London ● "Practical, everyday items have been given luxe finishes which are very on trend for Spring 2017. For example, mugs have been injected with both humour and glamour in our Metallic Monochrome and Gold Monogram collections." Megan Walsh, trade marketing, Sass & Belle by RJB Stone. ● "Functional, beautifully designed products will help mums to benefit from mindful pauses throughout the day. Notebooks and journals will stimulate creativity and spark ideas." Katie Benson, NPW's trade marketing manager.

Putting On The Glitz Jewellery is always a special gift, with Carrie Shapiro, creative director at Carrie Elspeth, confirming that Mother's Day is still a very strong occasion for the company, with personalised designs key. "We're bringing out new additions to our Sentiments bracelet collection to celebrate mums, while florals are back in our Spring collection range. Anything with a flower themeis sure to work for Mother’s Day," says Carrie. At Hot Tomato, bracelets are continuing to hold centre stage. "We have some gorgeous combos for Mother's Day and Spring in general," says md Alex Machin. "They can be mixed and matched or racked and stacked with accent colours in golds and girlie vintage pinks through to classic cooler tones of silver grey and turquoise."

Spotlight On... The South West
Town Co unt ry And
With summer holidays in mind, coastal giftware will be very much to the fore when Giving & Living opens its doors at Westpoint, near Exeter, in January. But what's currently driving sales for gift shops in the region? PG&H caught up with two local gift retailers, Justine Hyde, owner of Hyde+Seek in Exeter, winner of The Greats 2016 South West category, and finalist Elaine Coles, owner of The Country House Gifts Co. in Winscombe.
City Smart Hyde+Seek gift shop is based on a local high street in Exeter, a destination shopping centre for the South West that includes the recently opened Guildhall Food Hall. Owned by Justine Hyde, who previously worked in corporate management and training, she has a degree in Design and Film as well as a Masters in Fine Art. "Given my background, it seemed a natural progression to capitalise on my previous experience through opening my own business, especially one that allowed me to be creative. I therefore took a big risk and re-mortgaged the house," she explains. Today, Justine says that she loves the variety that each day brings. "One minute I'm fully engaged in customer service and people interaction, the next I'm organising shop displays, or working on an Excel spreadsheet or the website. It certainly keeps me on my toes! Plus, I truly love our customers and take enormous pleasure in a newbie finding us and saying, 'wow, this shop is amazing!'" Justine believes that her creative background is among the drivers that helps to differentiate Hyde+Seek from the other gift shops in the town. "You have to be true to yourself when working in a
creative format, and I think this honest approach pays off. Hyde+Seek is constantly evolving which keeps our customers coming back for more." Interestingly, she compares the interior of the shop to her artwork. "There's a certain amount of white empty space, a grid layout and splashes of bold colour. I remember that an employee started placing our stock at an angle and I nearly freaked!" Productwise, the shop has a broad reach, with affordability very much in mind, although, since the Brexit vote, Justine senses a more cautious shopper. "When we

first opened, Exeter didn't really have a gift shop like us. But now there's Tiger which opened in 2015 which I have to admit is a bit of an issue for us, as it can offer bargain pricing due to its size and buying power." However, we're lucky in that we have enough space to be a gift shop selling a wide selection of items, from toys, books and stationery to homewares, and I believe that as long as we stay true to our theme of fun and colourful, with a twist of quirk, then these sectors will continue to work well together." Unlike the majority of gift shops, Justine says that she deliberately stays away from the more traditional female gift sectors, such as jewellery and handbags, as she feels that they are already well catered for in Exeter. But what she did do exceptionally well with in 2016 were flamingo designs, which were a stand out for the shop. "We sold anything and everything ranging from homewares and stationery items to a flamingo shaped umbrella," she confirms. "Currently, the adult Ladybird book range is still going strong, while Enid Blyton fizzed things up over the Christmas period." Not quite as successful though for Hyde+Seek, were adult colouring Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

Spotlight On... The South West books. "There were too many left in the stock room for my liking, highlighting that a trend can suddenly drop off, and that we have to be careful not to over purchase." Capitalising on the location of the shop, Justine does her best to source products from local makers, with Exeter-related products including retro material flags with the words 'Exeter' or 'Devon' on them, which have gone around the world. "We also have a tea towel range that's specific to Exeter and Hyde+Seek which we're rather proud of too," she highlights. Meanwhile, social media is helping to get the word out for the shop, as well as strengthening the brand. Justine is keen to offer a personalised gift service option as well, as she views it as a huge market. "Hopefully we can grow the personalisation side through having an online presence," she comments.
Above: The shop interior reflects Justine's artistic background.
Looking ahead to 2017, she's excited to be launching an e-commerce business which has, so far, involved uploading over 18,000 products! Justine sees running a business as "a kind of philosophy. Part of that thinking process helps you believe that if it fails, then something else will succeed. You have to keep adjusting and creating. For example, in 2015, we joined our local BID scheme, and collectively strive to be exciting for locals and visitors from across the region, with a focus on independents to create diversity. We really do need alternative shopping destinations which can further enrich the shopping experience, helping to keep the high street and its surrounding areas alive and profitable."
Country Savvy The Country House Gift Co. is based in Winscombe, situated on the Western edge of the Mendip Hills, a large, busy attractive village in North Somerset. "As a destination, it offers a range of popular boutique style independent retail outlets," comments the shop's owner, Elaine Coles, who previously owned her own hairdressing salon, and also worked in property development. When a serious back problem forced her to become home based, she began selling gifts from her dining room table, progressing to farmers markets and eventually the opening of The Country House Gift Co. in 2012. She won a Greats Best Newcomer South & Wales award in 2015, and also made it to the Independent Gift Retailer of the Year South West finals in 2016. "Our company ethos is to offer exceptional customer Above: The Country House Gift Co. Right: Elaine Coles at The Greats Awards. Below: Winscombe, a rural idyll.
service, along with a range of unique, British made quality gifts," Elaine explains. "We work closely with local crafters and manufacturers so that our customers can find something special. We also publish our own range of cards - Country House Cards featuring local artists and photographers, which we will be launching to the trade at the Giving & Living show in January." (See page 51). Elaine says that wardrobe accessories do well for the shop, especially those that have been made in the UK. "We love Owen Barry's leather bags which are manufactured in Somerset, as well as Helen Moore faux fur fashion accessories which are made in Devon." Continued on page 51

Spotlight On... The South West Working with Owen Barry also enables The Country House Gift Co. to offer its customers a bespoke design service, and as personalisation is increasingly requested by customers, the shop also works with a local artist who can personalise gifts and cards. As with most retail outlets, social media is an important part of the marketing mix. "We use Facebook a lot for announcing new stockists, events and offers, as well as to remind people where we are and what we're about. Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter are also used in different ways to spread the word. We have an online shop, so we can use our social media marketing to reach a national audience, and we
also send out a newsletter once a month to our customers." Elaine says that since the Brexit decision, she's seen an increase in costs of products sourced from abroad, as well as those manufactured in the UK with imported component parts. "We have already seen Brexit affect some of our suppliers," she comments. "Plus, we are also having to deal with increased council tax, as well as the day-to-day challenges of trying to get people to come out to shop, instead of shopping online, even though we offer a full online shopping option. As for 2017, I must admit that I'm feeling cautious, curious and a little nervous about the Brexit effect!"

Bottom left: With the holiday season in mind, coastal gift shops will be kicking off their buying at Giving & Living which takes place in January.
Here Comes Summer The arrival of Exeter based Giving & Living on the show calendar in January kicks-off the holiday buying season for coastal gift retailers across the UK, with many visiting not just from the South West, but also from the South Coast and East Anglia. "We've even had buyers from as far away as John O'Groats," confirms Mike Anderson, md of show organisers Hale Events. Taking place at Westpoint, near Exeter, from January 15-18, the show will be setting out to unveil an exciting array of gifts, with 250 exhibitors showcasing their products to a diverse range of retailers. "Some 80% are independents, who have always been the bread and butter for exhibitors, but we also attract a lot of buyers from tourist attractions, heritage sites, department stores, garden centres and buying groups," comments Mike Anderson, md of show organisers Hale Events. "Plus, we're seeing buyers attending from inland towns to buy coastal gifts for their audience who like to have, for example, a nautical clock or seashells in their homes." He makes the point that nowadays, there is increasing convergence in the gift
15 - 18 January 2017 Exeter
market, as well as a shorter supply chain, which means that some of the largest exhibitors at the show are currently representing more brands than ever. Exhibitors in January will include major suppliers such as Ashwood Gifts, Pachama, Wilton Bradley, Out of the Blue and Kandy Toys of Exeter, as well as many newcomers. These include Wool Cottage, Silver Nugget Jewellery and Devonshire Stone Co. To help buyers to better 'shop the show', a special Coastal Path has been introduced to lead visitors around the exhibition to find the companies that are offering everything from pocket money gifts to one off pieces. "It will also be linked to a feature area showcasing some of the best
products to be found along the path," highlights Mike. In addition to this strong product mix for coastal buyers, additional sectors also cover fashion jewellery and accessories, pocket money gifts and toys and personalised gifts for visitor attractions, as well as decorative gifts for the home, greeting cards and business services. "We also have a section of the show dedicated to British designermakers offering unique, handmade gifts," Mike states. Elsewhere, 'Naturally' will be spotlighting products with strong environmental credentials. As for trends, he says that in a continued focus on British wildlife - to include foxes, hares and native birds - there is a more tropical element creeping in. "Pink flamingos continue to be popular, and we're also seeing more cactus designs," confirms Mike. "Plus, coastal themes are big for gift and homewares, as is sea life imagery such as star fish and shellfish." For retailers looking for something different, the Newcomer's area will be returning, focusing on first time exhibitors companies that have never exhibited at a show before. Highlights Mike: "From a buyer's perspective, the Newcomer's area is a great opportunity to spot emerging talent and products before anyone else." Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

Spotlight On... Licensed Giftware
Brand Deliver From classic licences such as The Royal Horticultural Society, Ladybird Books, Flower Fairies and Beauty and the Beast to Designers Guild and Velvet Olive, there's a raft of great licensed giftware about to hit the shelves this Spring. PG&H spoke to some of the industry's leading licensed giftware suppliers to find out what's hot, and who's doing what.
Ladybird Books For Grown-Ups The Lagoon Group is launching a new range of Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups games, based on Ladybird’s best-selling spoof books, including The Husband, the Wife, Dating and The Hangover, which help adults navigate life. To date, Penguin has published 20 of these adult remakes’ of its 'How it works' books, which have sold more than 2m copies in less than 12 months, certainly a publishing phenomenon. “We will be launching seven games at Spring Fair," confirms Lagoon's md Heather Watherston. "People love the original Ladybird artwork matched with Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris’ delightfully witty new text and with titles such The Mum, The Dad, The Student and The Grandparents. They make great gifts for everyone,” adds Heather. The initial range was launched in the Autumn. Left: Three new titles in Lagoon's Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups. Above right: The Present Company's range of fine bone china RHS giftware.
Beauty And The Beast To tie-in with the new Beauty and the Beat movie that has its release in March, Half Moon Bay will be introducing a brand new Beauty and the Beast license that will be launching as part of the company's Spring/Summer 2017 collection. "The range honours the classic ideas of the original animation, but its contemporary feel also complements the new live-action film," says Half Moon Bay's marketing assistant Emily Moores. The range features soft pastels, dainty florals and gold detailing across designs that reflect the most iconic scenes, characters and quotes from the story." Continues Emily: "Many of our popular product Above: The Beauty and the Beast latte formats have been included in this range, such as a mug and compact from Half Moon Bay. notebook and latte mug, but we are also excited to introduce some new formats which we feel really reflect the nature of this classic tale. These include a cosmetic bag, compact mirror, tea for one set and a new vintage shaped mug. Beauty and the Beast has always been highly rated with Disney fans and we hope that this new collection is a nostalgic reminder of the childhood favourite, as well as a great collection for those who will fall in love with the classic fairy tale in the 2017 re-imagination," she adds.
Royal Horticultural Society The Royal Horticultural Society is continuing to build its licensing programme, most recently securing a partnership with The Present Company for fine bone china giftware. The collection includes a range of churn jugs; a tea for one set; a cappuccino coffee cup and saucer; a Huga mug and tray; a two-tiered cake plate, and an adaptable gateau plate/cheese platter. “The beautiful RHS Lindley Library imagery is perfect for this collection, which, we are sure, will attract a large number of lovers of elegant giftware both online and at retail,” comments Pauline Harvey, director of Staffordshire based The Present Company. All items in the collection are illustrated with selected images from the RHS Lindley Library, as well as the phrase ‘When the flowers bloom, the bees come uninvited’.
Designers Guild Deva Designs, among the leading suppliers of design-led giftwrap, is delighted to be welcoming Designers Guild back into its collection for 2017. The collection will form the cornerstone of the company's new range. "As ever, Designers Guild doesn't follow the trends, they set them," says Andrew Maddocks, md of Right: Bags are a highlight of Deva Designs' Designers Guild collection.

Spotlight On... Licensed Giftware Deva Designs. "The new designs are both powerful and beautiful and include the delicate Chinoiserie flowers and Plum Blossom from their latest collection. It's not just the fabulously original hand painted artwork that sets Designers Guild apart," continues Andrew. "It's their attention to detail with the juxtaposition of contrasting colours and patterns, and such considered details of the embellishments."
Alice Scott Alongside Happy Jackson (which artist Heather Flynn co creates with Giles Andreae), Heather’s second award winning creation, Alice Scott continues to develop. Winner of two Henries awards, as well as a National Stationery Award in New York, the brand's quirky black and white style can now be seen on a myriad of licensed products. Following on from successful launches in both home storage and ceramics in 2016, design brand Alice Scott is set to expand further into the stationery and gifting arena, with a new 18-piece collection produced under licence Above: New from Portico, an Alice Scott licensed journal. by Portico. Creating a strong tabletop story, the range leads with the tropical Wildlands and Palmhouse prints, alongside new geometrics and more whimsical editorial. Premium boards, finishes and gold details give the line a sharp, contemporary mood.
British Museum The British Museum, the UK's most popular visitor attraction, was founded in 1753 and was the first national public museum in the world. The collection tells the story of cultures across the world, from the dawn of human history over two million years ago, to the present. “We are delighted to be in partnership with the British Museum on this new range of stationery," says Louise Dixon, senior editorial director at Michael O’Mara Books. "The wealth of the Museum’s collection is unrivalled and unique and we look forward to launching the programme with some beautiful items in the Spring.”
Flower Fairies In 2017, Enesco will be launching a brand new Flower Fairies collection of gift homeware and accessories. Flower Fairies are botanically accurate drawings featuring 170 original illustrations, coupled with fairy images, based on real children from artist Cicely Mary Barker's sister’s nursery school. They were first published in 1923. "We have a long standing affinity for Flower Fairies, and when we saw the new style guide we knew we had to be involved," says Helen Shield, Enesco's director of marketing. "The brand new contemporary styling suits our portfolio and not only has the benefit of an existing, strong fan base but also brings the artwork bang up to date, appealing to consumers of all ages." Above: Flower Fairies ceramics from Enesco.

Velvet Olive Among the new licenses that Widdop And Co is currently excited about for 2017 is Velvet Olive, an inspiring design-led greeting card brand, which is a sibling to Ling Design. "We will be launching four unique collections at Spring Fair within the licence, covering baby, wedding, family and friends and birthday," confirms marketing manager Sue Grant. Products within the collections include Prosecco Above: Velvet Olive giftware glasses, keepsake boxes, frames prints and mug sets." She adds that licensed gifts are playing an increasingly from Widdop And Co. important role for the company. "In 2017, we will be broadening our licensed offer to incorporate new product categories, such as homeware, building on the success of our current licences in both men’s and ladies’ gifts, introducing new charity licences as well as continuing to design and innovate in our existing licenses," Sue states.
Clare Davis EastWest (Europe) has expanded its licensed portfolio by joining forces with Clare Davis - wellknown known for her glitter glassware and ceramics - on the design and marketing of a successful Clare Davis range of shot and champagne flutes. "A full collection, in attractive new packaging, will be available to view at Spring Fair," confirms EastWest director Terry Taylor.

Spotlight On... Reed Diffusers
Reed All About It or most home fragrance lovers, one reed diffuser simply isn't enough. As with scented candles, it can often be a choice between selecting a signature scent to fragrance the home, or a different scent for every room to reflect its style and ambience. But one thing's for certain. Reed diffusers remain a growth market, very much escalating in popularity. Wax Lyrical, acquired by Portmeirion Group last May, is among the companies that have really upped the ante, taking reeds to another level. In addition to a luxurious new 500ml reed diffuser bottle in the company's premium Fired Earth collection, there has also been a step change in reeds in its licensed RHS Vintage Posy collection and new British Garden gifting range featuring a fragrance efficient, decorative solar flower and cotton wick diffuser. Plus,

In recent years, beautifully packaged reed diffusers have become one of the fastest growing home fragrance formats, subtly scenting homes with seasonal and special occasion fragrances. From a retailer's perspective, they are a win/win, an all year round best seller, with customers coming back time and again to purchase their favourite fragrance refills. So can they get more sophisticated? You bet! The Spring shows will be revealing how manufacturers and suppliers have raised their game, with reeds in particular becoming ever more innovative.
the company is also launching a 100ml two tone fragrance diffuser in its Equilibrium Spa range, as well as a new 180ml diffuser which has been launched in the Colony range. (See A Take On The Lakes on pages 34-35). "Reed diffusers are continuing to go from strength to strength," confirms Wax Lyrical's md Jo Barber. "The solar flower and cotton is a very pretty way to fragrance the home and looks good on, for example, a dressing table. Plus, it makes a lovely gift. For Spring 2017, we'll be launching it in four different fragrances." Also presenting reeds in a fresh, new way is Ashleigh & Burwood, with additional embellishments adding a new interest. "After successfully launching our Christmas ceramic reed toppers, we will be introducing two new designs for Spring/Summer 17, with butterfly and bird shaped ceramics adorning the top of natural diffuser reeds to add an extra decorative dimension," explains PR manager Deborah Bettinson. She says
that the success of reed diffusers is down to a combination of enticing packaging and presentation, the right price and, importantly, a strong collection of inspiring fragrances with an option for the consumer to sample the scents in store. "Our range of new diffuser fragrances in The Scented Home Collection centre around our Country Garden theme, with Soft Cotton and Pink Grapefruit bolstering our core scents of Garden Mint, Country Lavender and Tea Rose." Di Palomo's sales director Rob Tyler says that with reed diffusers evolving to become one of the favourite methods of fragrancing the home, so competition in this Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

lucrative market has become fierce. "Retailers are faced with enormous choice and need to select carefully to be sure of offering what their customers want as we move into the next season," he states. "Quality of fragrance is paramount, but this must be coupled with style in both packaging and the choice of container. Plus, a growing trend is for consumers to create their own individual diffusers using stylish vases to suit their homes. Brands are responding to this by offering a wider range of container solutions. We have seen increasing sales in diffuser refill packs which are being bought to fill customers’ own vases." Meanwhile, 2017 will also be an exciting time for madebyzen. "We are continuously looking for new inspiration in technology, décor and fragrance, and our new product additions reflect this passion for trendsetting," says md Dharmesh Bhayani. "Our Classic collection white reed diffusers have recently seen a new addition with the
launch of our contemporary black reed diffusers. This new collection carries six new fragrances showcasing some truly exotic and atmospheric aromas." He says that the Contemporary collection of reed diffusers has growing appeal, with retailers noting that they are attracting both women and men to buy not just for themselves but also for each other. "The male consumer, not new to us, has a growing interest in our products and we are consistently trying to cater for this within our product ranges." Meanwhile, at Stoneglow, head of design Winnie Wong says that the company's Modern Classics range is timeless, with the 90ml circular glass bottle able to blend into any decor, and available in 17 fragrances - candles as well as diffusers - for Spring/Summer 17. "In addition, our signature range, Nature’s Gift, offers a generous 200ml reed diffuser, bringing together the beauty of nature by
using real botanical pieces," comments Winnie. "We believe that Botanicals are set to make an impact in the coming seasons, as spotted on interior forecasts, fashion catwalks and textiles." The company also offers 200ml refill fragrances for all its bespoke diffusers, so that consumers can sustain and reuse the glass containers. "At Stoneglow, we move with the trends and offer consumers newness and freshness through constantly Top left: madebyzen's Signature: Contemporary black reed diffuser. pushing the boundaries and sourcing unique materials and fragrance blends," adds Winnie. Seeing a market for smaller containers is Price's, where Nicky Dawson, head of design, says that value for money, combined with quality, are the standout requests from consumers, with either smaller containers (80ml) becoming available to hit impulse price points, or larger containers offering better value for money but at a higher initial cost. In terms of fragrances, Nicky says that 2017 will see a continuation from 2016, with zesty and fruity aromas still consumer favourites. "Stand out favourites from our Signature collection are Melon & Cucumber and Tahitian Lime fragrances," she confirms. For Yankee Candle, reed diffusers remain popular within the flameless category, a practical alternative to wax for home fragrance. "Our three staple ranges Classic, Signature and Décor - each bring something different to the consumer depending on their needs and tastes," explains Sarah Dixon, UK marketing manager. "The Classic bottle replicates our Classic jar shape, so that consumers never wander too far from the brand’s heartland. Signature is presented in beautiful opaque packaging that would complement any home décor and the Décor collection is chic and contemporary, suitable both for loft living or the family home, with reed diffusers continuing to drive sales for us all year round." Spotlight On... Reed Diffusers Fikkerts' marketing director, Julia Fikkerts, makes the point that as a reed diffuser is on display all day long, often in a prominent position, such as on a shelf or in the bathroom, when purchasing, consumers select it almost as if it were an ornament. "Appealing packaging is therefore extremely important, and our 2016 launch of the Fruits of Nature range, with its vintage apothecary style corked bottle and parchment type label, has been a huge success," she comments. "However, tastes and trends are not static, and we are already looking into unusual eye-catching containers that will make our diffusers further stand out in 2017." Xystos' director Tom Sykes says that it is difficult to remember a time when reed diffusers weren’t popular in the UK. "It was only at the turn of the Millennium that they really began to grab significant sales in America before catching on in Britain some time later," he recalls. “Now, we take them for granted as part of the flame and fragrance offering.” Xystos' latest range, the English Heritage Home Fragrance Collection from Woods of Windsor, has been inspired by historic landmarks, and includes diffusers in three fragrances - Tudor Rose, inspired by Kenilworth Castle’s Elizabethan Garden, Inspired by the Art Deco period, which can be seen in elements of Eltham Palace’s interiors, and Sea Spray & Freesia, inspired by the coastal gardens of Osborne on the Below: Xystos' English Heritage Tudor Rose diffuser by Woods of Windsor. Isle of Wight. Adds Tom: “While there will always be quirky scents used for candles and diffusers, floral and fruit fragrances will continue to be a force in this marketplace in 2017 and beyond, with the great British public continuing to adore the more traditional fragrances." However, Denise Edwards, director, Best Kept Secrets, begs to differ. She says that the company has seen a real interest in the more complex and sophisticated fragrances in its reed diffuser range. "We also know that the quality of a good POS presentation can make a huge difference to the products selection as a gift
item," she points out, with the company also seeing growth over the last year from online sales of products. "Many of our traditional retailers are making strong inroads into online sales from dedicated ecommerce activity," she confirms. "This has provided a wider sales pipeline for ourselves and our customers for products such as reed diffusers," she states.
Also seeing reed diffusers as a good, all year round line is Joe Davies, with the company focusing on light, airy scents and smart packaging. "Presentation is very important and they key to increasing the perceived value of the product and therefore sales," says sales manager David Cree. He says that while popular scents for Spring tend to be traditional flowers such as peony, jasmine, rose and lavender, retailers should also be on the look-out for non-flowered aromas such as sandalwood and cotton. Parlane has been selling reed diffusers for a number of seasons, with the company's top three fragrances Amber & Jasmine, Chai Latte & Ginger and Vanilla & Brown Sugar. "The market has become even more competitive," comments md Mike Burgess. "Even fashion brands are now producing their own versions, so quality and value for money have become all the more important.” It may be a highly competitive market place, but one thing's for certain. Reed diffusers are here to stay. Right: Bolsius' Aromatic Mango reed diffuser.

Spotlight On... Collectables
Animal Crackers There's no doubt about it, there's something in our 'hunter gatherer' psyche that means that people love to collect, with a wide reach of new launches grabbing the attention of collectors. From new figurines, animals and angels to characters, sentiment and studies, PG&H takes a look at who is doing what in the collectables market place going into 2017. Back in the day, collectables were often an investment, with limited editions and collectors clubs driving sales. Today, people collect items because, quite simply, they love them and want to display them - as with figurines and studies - or because they want to wear them, as can be seen with, for example, sentiment fashion accessories such as bracelets or scarves, where people happily buy armfuls to add to their 'collection'. Arguably, Enesco probably knows more about figurines than anybody else in the market place, having been selling an enviable product portfolio of the world’s most popular brands for decades, including Beatrix Potter, Willow Tree and Disney collections. In fact, earlier this year, the company revealed that more figurines were sold in 2015 than in 2014, with 250 figurines sold
every hour of the year! The figures also reveal the longevity in the popularity and demand of figurines such as Willow Tree's Promise, which has been a best seller for 10 years. So what's in the pipeline for the coming year? "Our 2017 plans strongly focus on our Beatrix Potter Collections," confirms Helen Shield, director of marketing at Enesco Europe. "2016 was a phenomenal year for us, with exceptional support from Penguin surrounding the 150th Anniversary. Our Friends of Peter Rabbit Collectors Club will be updated for 2017 with brand new stationery, bigger editions of Hilltop Tales and a strong marketing support plan using social media and regular email updates for club members." Continues Helen: "Along with collectable figural additions to the

range, we also have more plush, a new limited edition set in the regular line, plus a new unique collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital and Silvergate." Lesser & Pavey is, of course, among the leading companies when it comes to quality lifelike studies of dogs, from Boxers and Retrievers to the fashionable Pug, Bulldog, Chihuahua and Dachshund. "With a bouncing Boxer having entered our TV screens this Christmas, accompanied by various woodland animals, we believe that Britain's love for creatures great and small will continue, as will the consumer's desire to collect," says Julian Hunt, md of Lesser & Pavey, making reference to the John Lewis TV advert. "And it's the UK’s admiration for our canine friends that continues to keep our ranges of dog studies so prominent. They no longer need to be exact to the dog's colouring," points out Julian. "Although this has never stopped being a current range of collectables for us, currently we're finding that consumer demand is for more towards modern studies, such as the bronzed styled ranges, which are offered under our international brand name, The Leonardo Collection, which has grown in popularity to a new market of consumers." Animal and bird collectables remain the mainstay of Frith Sculpture, with the Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide

company continuing to develop exclusive designs based around a British wildlife theme, a success in 2016. "Hedgehogs, mice in particular, and British birds were very popular, so we will be adding to these ranges," confirms David Wilkinson, md of Frith Sculpture. In line with current collectables trends, he adds that dogs are becoming more and more collectable. "We will therefore be introducing a Cockapoo and a Labradoodle, reflecting the popularity of these new cross breeds," he explains. "There seems to be a growing trend of collectors buying across the Frith range and not concentrating on just one subject, with bronze becoming increasingly popular as a furnishing accessory." "The collectables market these days could safely be summed up as eclectic," says Sue Grant, marketing manager at Widdop and Co. "Over the past few years we have seen the market diversify with new collectable product ranges entering the arena. At the same time, the more traditional collectable figurine market is continuing to shrink." She highlights four key trends for 2017, with animals remaining a strong collectable favourite, especially elephants, frogs and owls, which continue to be a runaway success. "For 2017, we will be introducing

some brand new traditional animal figurines, as well as glass animal paperweights, in our Objet d’Art collection and animal Treasured Trinkets," Sue confirms. Disney too, has been, and continues to be, highly collectable, with lots of new lines planned for 2017 around the release of the Beauty and the Beast film, as well as the classic Disney characters. The company is also seeing an increase in the collecting of specific items such as water balls and compact mirrors, in addition to the more traditional collectable figurines. “For example, Broadway Belles has been a firm favourite since its inception five years ago, and, in Right: ‘First my mother, forever my friend’ is among the You Are An Angel figurines distributed by Gaeltag. The range is being extended to cover more occasions, and new items are due in January.
Did You Know...? ...Michelin starred chef Angela Hartnett collects Poole Pottery. "I love the look and feel of old things and I'm particularly drawn to turquoise blue," she recently told YOU magazine. "I also pick up first editions of Elizabeth David cookbooks from Joanne Hendricks book shop whenever I'm in New York." Left: Turquoise Poole Pottery, a favourite of chef Angela Hartnett. Tallulah was created by Poole artist Sean Flint.
2017, a brand new collection of new Broadway Belles will hit the shelves," Sue confirms. "Although collectables have had a tough time in recent years we're seeing a bit of a resurgence at Joe Davies,” says commercial director Paul Hooker. “For 2016, we have seen fairies begin to feature strongly in collectable items, evidenced by extremely robust sales on our Fairy Dell Solar House Collection. Perhaps what makes this range so special for a collectable is that it can be placed outside the home, has LED lit interiors and is a very pretty addition to a garden. As gardens can be a fairly large and uncluttered, the environment really lends itself to having a number of the houses dotted around." Paul adds that contemporary figurines have also fared well, with retailers reporting that their customers are collecting contemporary sculptures from the company's Rainy Day range. "For 2017, we're therefore expecting both trends to continue, particularly the fairy and garden collectable themes. We are also developing new lines to join the main collection," he adds. Angels, of course, have always been a popular collectable, and following an agreement with the Aird Group of Australia, Gaeltag has added to the company's existing Cow Parade and Emily Stracey collectables gift ranges, recently launching You Are An Angel into the UK market. "It's generally felt that collectables are not what consumers are looking for nowadays," comments Gaeltag's md Frank Emmel. "However, the success of these beautifully presented angel figurines and associated merchandise gives lie to that, proving that good design, allied with the right sentiments and good pricing, will always find a ready market. It's been inspired to celebrate the special people that touch us in our lives, with new items due out in January.” Clearly, it sounds as though there are plenty of reasons for lots more hunting and gathering in 2017! On The Road Tina Morse Although Christmas was slow to kick off, Tina Morse, a North of England gift agent for the past10 years, is feeling very positive about 2017. Her current principals are Junction 18 and Shruti Designs. "2016 has been a good year, but Christmas was late to start this time around," comments Tina. "So while shops had stock from early September, with Halloween becoming more popular year on year, it seems that most people didn't start thinking about Christmas until after November 1. I've found that while many of my Autumn/Christmas ranges sold well from August/September, the repeat sales didn’t really start in earnest until November. However, repeats were much larger than in previous years." Tina highlights that there has been a trend of retailers moving away from traditional Christmas products such as decorations, wreaths and garlands, with the focus more on 'Gifts at Christmas' - traditional gifting products that don’t have a limited shelf life. "Metallics, such as the Ta Da collection, proved really popular in 2016 and mixed well into Christmas displays without needing to be put away or go into sale come the New Year," she points out. "Key product categories for me this year were makeup/toiletry bags, fashion accessories, and anything relating to candles. But the real surprise was coasters! From simple heart shapes to sentiment and novelty, sales were consistently strong all year. I also saw a big rise in sales of baby products, and more
retailers specialising in baby clothes and accessories." Men's gifts were another strong sector. "It always feels like the holy grail of the gift industry, so getting that offer right is really important," she adds. Looking forward to the coming year, Tina says she is feeling really confident. "I have already identified some key ranges, and pre-orders for the early part of 2017 have been incredibly positive," she states. "Brexit, the American presidency, Article 50… these will all have an effect on the bigger picture in terms of exchange rates and the landed costs of goods. But I think it's really important to remember that the success of a category or collection isn’t based solely on price. Retailers want to work with companies who offer good customer service, quality, consistent deliveries, and launch new and interesting products each season. They are always looking for on trend products that offer good margin, so if suppliers can offer all of that, then everyone’s going to be happy!"
Last Word PJ Arandor He buys books and doesn't read them, hasn't owned a TV in over 30 years, and falls asleep in Harry Potter movies! PG&H caught up with award winning Filipino lifestyle designer PJ Aranador who was responsible for the look and feel of the recent IHGF Autumn Fair in Delhi. ● How would you describe yourself in three words? "Sensible, contemporary and responsible." ● Can you tell us a quirky fact that we don't know about you? “My first name is Percy, which means keen eyed. Mine are very sharp and I see things, especially details, that others don’t, which is what you need when you are a designer. The name suits me perfectly. I am also known as 'the bush man''." ● What is the best advice you were given when you were a young designer? “Read, look around you and travel." ● What advice would you give someone just starting out in the industry? "Go where the root of the materials are." ● What's your favourite TV programme? "I haven’t owned a TV in about 30 years!" ● What's your favourite movie? "I probably watch one to two movies a year, and enjoy the Italian movie Paradiso and the French movie Amelie. My nieces and nephews love Harry Potter but I fall asleep after five minutes!"
● How do you start your day? "I rise early between 6-7am. I always stay in villages where I can find the natural resources I need for my designs. Villagers go about their day very early and I'm the same." ● How do you end your day? "I start preparing for the next day, not just workwise, but also with my clothes. I decide the night before what am I going to wear. It’s very important to me." ● What's your favourite country to visit? "I love Kenya, especially the horizon at sunset and watching the animals move. I also love India because it is a country of extremes. It is very beautiful and majestic." ● How do you relax and what’s your greatest luxury? "I like to listen to classical music and I'm also very active. I swim and walk every day. My work is very tiring so sleep is my greatest luxury and my way to relax." ● Which item you would you take to a desert island? "Books, especially biographies, because they inspire me. I'm always buying them yet never have time to read them." Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide
