EDITOR’S COMMENT PROGRESSIVE HOUSEWARES03 WELCOME
Can I admit to a favourite retailer category in The Excellence in Housewares Awards? After 22 years of being part of these very special industry accolades, I am going to confess. Out of all the fabulous categories, I find the Excellence in Retailer Initiative Award truly fascinating. Very often reflecting the times and always demonstrating creativity and ingenuity, initiatives over the years have been awe-inspiring. This year’s finalists are no exception (see page 26). They include Aldiss’ devotion to bringing the shopfloor to life online with its tours.changingseasonally360-degreeBuyMeOnceand Dinghams both presented alternatives to the impulse buying that is often associated with Black Friday last November. Simple and engaging, Frankie & Johnny’s Friday Quiz asks customers to guess a mystery housewares product. Next up, Garsons’ 150th anniversary celebrations included a thoughtful anniversary product range with bespoke artwork on a tea towel, as well as cups and water bottles. With the rising cost of living, Lakeland is addressing consumer searches for advice with its well-timed Spend Smart, Live Well campaign. When it came to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Potters Cookshop’s community celebrations included cream teas and popup stalls outside the shop for young entrepreneurs and local start-ups.

BHETA confirms upturn BHETA’s latest quarterly economic report confirms that while most sectors are experiencing year on year downturns, value and volume figures remain higher than prior to the pandemic. The report shows the performance of 24 key product categories across the Homewares, DIY, Gardening & Electrical sectors and provides an opportunity to benchmark individual businesses against the market.

Power of the collective
Renowned for her strong leadership, Rythm is ceo of Avocet Hardware Group and has spearheaded several acquisitions of failing companies, turning them into profitable and sustainable businesses within the Group. “Seeing hard work pay off - including taking companies from a point of peril to a point of profitability - that’s what gets me up in the morning,” she told PH. Emphasising the power of the trade association, Rythm acknowledges: “Having been on the board since 2010, I have seen how important BHETA is to its members; and to the future of home and housewares suppliers, helping with legislation, finance and government changes, not to mention trading conditions and commercial opportunities. Having a platform with a powerful voice means so much to suppliers and my intention is to continue the great work BHETA has done in this regard.”
She confirms: “I’m sure that I will have some new ideas and be able to offer my support whenever asked, but BHETA is very much the sum of its parts, much like the Avocet Hardware Group.”
“The aim of the BHETA Quarterly Report (which is exclusive to members) is to pull together different sources of quantitative and qualitative market data to inform and bring the industry together in common causes,” explains BHETA marketing manager Steve Richardson. Produced with GlobalData, the report also references other producers of contemporary market information and includes new commentary from sponsors of specific sectors. It also includes information on the economic climate, how customers are shopping using Google, consumer behaviour and retail forecasts.
BHETA’s recent AGM saw the election of Jane Mason, commercial director of DKB Household UK on to the board, taking on the role of BHETA’s vice president for housewares.
“My main aim at BHETA is to help the team maintain and develop the association’s relevance by ensuring that we understand members’ needs in these really challenging times; and identify the future opportunities that will ultimately grow their businesses and their people.”

Welcoming Rythm as new president, BHETA’s chairman, Andrew Weiss said the whole board was looking forward to “an exciting future under her stewardship.” Andrew thanked previous president Alastair for “his significant contribution,” including lobbying.

PROGRESSIVE HOUSEWARES15
Talking of the current climate for business, Rythm observes: “We are all facing increased component and raw material prices, energy costs, wage inflation that combined lead to impacting consumer confidence resulting in declining sales for non-essential goods.
Rythm admits to having “a real passion for housewares,” describing her visit to Exclusively as “truly inspirational.” She elaborates: “The Show has such an incredibly positive energy and from talking to exhibitors and visitors I was able to get a real sense of how important it is for the industry.”
Formally elected at the recent AGM, BHETA’s new president Rythm Jain is a strong advocate of collective action and mutual business support. She has taken over the non-executive position from Alastair Fisher, joint managing director of Taylor’s Eye Witness, who remains on the BHETA board.
Why join BHETA? New president Rythm Jain has these words for any housewares supplier thinking about joining BHETA: “If you are looking to grow your business, need support on tackling an issue, want to gain a better understanding of a market sector, would like to talk to an experienced manager with a proven industry track record, or simply make direct contact with a retailer and network with fellow suppliers, join BHETA. The collective effectiveness of the BHETA team and the industry knowledge and experience in the organisation are all second to none and it really helps its members with both problems and opportunities. You can be sure that BHETA is and will stay a proactive association that will fight your corner, and I am proud to be its new president.”
Meanwhile, David Holmes, managing director of The DRH Collection was re-elected as BHETA’s treasurer and Richard Walker, commercial director of Eddingtons continues to be a member of the board.
Above: DKB’s Jane Mason - pictured at The Excellence in Housewares Awards 2021 – is the new BHETA vice president for housewares.
Steve reports: “Fundamentally the report proves that while the majority of companies are experiencing a YOY dip versus last year, the new consumers who entered the market over successive lockdowns are very much still there. Overall figures remain up with significant future opportunity vis a vis pre-pandemic 2019.”

Another of Andrew’s top tips from Bira is to work with other businesses in the community to share ideas and develop your own Green Street.“Start by speaking to neighbouring shops to see if they want to get involved. Not only would this make another good story for your social channels and local press, but we believe shoppers are looking for something different and a sense of community when they go to their high streets,” Andrew acknowledges.“Ask customers for their own ideas – what would they like to see? This is a really great way to get customer involvement. Perhaps they want to see more visibility of where their products are sourced from, or maybe they want to know the steps you have taken to become more sustainable. You could invite them to come up with suggestions on your social channels, or through signs and prompts in your shop,” he adds. Above: It’s time to focus on inflation, says Bira.

There could also be great health benefits! Are you able to offer repair services, such as knife sharpening, or spare parts for SDAs? There is an influx of TV shows that are upcycling and repairing, encouraging people to think more about durability and extending product life. Can you go plastic free? At least avoid single use plastics such as water bottles. Larger stores are signing pledges to not buy single use plastic bottles and it's a huge movement that has shown strong support from many independent cookshops and housewares stockists who are providing alternatives.

Get back to the day job
Fourthly, if delivering locally, can it be done in an electric or hybrid vehicle? We know that some retailers have even re-introduced bicycle delivery (using the electric bikes) and it is a real showstopper. Not only does it show your customers that you are thinking of the long term, but it can also be turned into great social media stories; the bikes can be used for further advertising, and your shopper will appreciate the extra efforts you have gone to.
Thirdly, look at your supply chain and ask if you can buy anything locally. Are your suppliers taking steps to reduce their own carbon footprint? Can you source greener substitute products? Many businesses look at supply chain mapping, which can be done relatively easily, with plenty of help and advice online. You can find out more about how your products and services are produced, from where and by whom.
Reflecting on the ongoing leadership campaigns and “tumultuous” political weeks, Andrew Goodacre, ceo of Bira says that independent retailers need “a measure of certainty and clear direction” to “successfully navigate the most challenging economic circumstances we have seen for years.” He implores government “to get back to the ‘day job’ as quickly as possible,” delivering business support where it is needed “with policies that will make a difference to shoppers and high streets.”
Sustainability may seem like a cost, but it is in fact a real opportunity.
Right: Reusable coffee cup by Eco Chic
With so many rising prices for us all, and products being more difficult to get hold of, it is important for retailers to look at their systems and processes from top to bottom to ensure they are sustainable in all that they do.
For those housewares stockists that incorporate a café or coffee shop, offer the customer the opportunity to use his/her own cup for drinks. Many coffee shops offer a small discount on drinks sold with own cups or have returnable cups and crockery for people to 'borrow'. With prices increasing, even just a few pence off makes a difference for consumers.
Secondly, re-use packaging. If you are delivering things locally (or further afield), use the packaging received from your suppliers. Recycling/re-using packaging is a simple way to make a difference and will save money in the long run.
Finally, if you are making all this effort – tell people! Make it clear that you are taking steps to be a sustainable retailer. All the research is saying that shoppers want to use ethical shops with ethical products. So, don’t be shy and make sure that people know the strength of your green credentials.
Andrew emphasises:“With a new leader we would hope to move away from in-fighting to focus on what is really important – addressing inflation, revitalising consumer confidence and helping businesses with spiralling overheads.” Bira’s pleas to the new leadership include the wholesale reform and reduction of business rates, the expansion of existing government funds to help more indie retailers develop management and technology skills, and “no more unnecessary changes.” The government should also consider ways of increasing demand, according to Andrew, for example,“by reducing personal taxation or VAT, encouraging people to spend, which will help us all in the long run.”
More sustainable thinking
Recognising the very tough market, I have put together Bira’s top tips on how to be and stay sustainable. Firstly, of course, save energy. If you are looking to change to low energy lightbulbs, these can they be purchased locally. Some low energy bulbs can use 90% less energy - along with lasting 40 times longer. Moreover, by making this easy switch, you could reduce your carbon dioxide emission by up to 40kg a year.

Those who have school age kids know it well, but it is still surprising somehow. Along with staff holidays and factory shutdowns, it is a busy time.

Sales took a bit of a dive but have surprisingly rallied over the last month. Nothing to get excited about but any improvement is appreciated, especially in the summer holidays! We have planned out the rest of the year for buying so are hoping that this trend continues and doesn’t dive again come October with the energy increases. With importing from Europe still proving slow, painful and costly we have invested even more in buying from the platform Faire. Even though you now have to pay a monthly subscription, it is still worth it due to the lack of hassle and the fact that they pay all the import duties. They also give a 10% discount for UK suppliers. The number of suppliers is growing every day and we have just bought a lot of stock as part of Faire’s Summer Market where you could get up to 30% off some suppliers. Lots of suppliers are also offering free credit of up to £300. This is all helping massively with margin but also with making stock more affordable for our customers when they are being squeezed from every angle. I have been really impressed with how slick the website is and it really makes buying so easy and deliveries soFatimaquick.and I were discussing our trip to M&O in Paris and, as lovely as it is to go, it is starting to feel less relevant. Even if we do find new, exciting product the cost and hassle of importing it often outweighs the value it adds, which is a very sad day. Added to that, the cost of Eurostar and hotels in Paris is bonkers! I still want to go though, obvz…there’s nothing quite like Paris. Our Stoke Newington Business association art event was a brilliant success. We received a lot of press and celebrity endorsements, but the main highlight was the joy of the community when walking down our streets and seeing art in all the businesses’ windows. It was incredibly joyful and uplifting. Another highlight was the actual artists, the “invisible people” who came to see their art being displayed. We received so many messages from the artists and their families. One of the artists, a 13year old girl with autism, hadn’t left the house since the beginning of the pandemic and she came out twice to see her art. I was lucky enough to have her drawing in my window and I now have it in my home as it meant a lot to me and her. Meanwhile, Hackney Council has started its pavement widening scheme to increase the ‘pedestrian pound’ as they call it. Trying to make a nicer environment to increase footfall. I am not convinced it is going to make a difference and have had to fight for them not to increase the pavement at my junction. Our pavements are already very wide and – as the Council has closed the main road half-way along to reduce through-traffic - all the delivery lorries now do a three- point turn at our junction and it is dangerous for pedestrians. We won in the end but dealing with the Council has blown my mind! When I told them that lorries couldn’t fit down their new proposed exit route, they asked if we could get our deliveries on smaller vehicles! Dutch flower lorries decanting into transits, big food and beer lorries using smaller vans and my suppliers coming from Europe. The delusion about the cost and viability of asking our suppliers to do this made my head explode. Also, with them trying to reduce traffic they want 10 transit vans instead of one lorry. Next, they will be trying to ban deliveries!
The juggle is in full swingshops, kids, holidays, activities.

The 2-in-1 functionality of the LAICA Dual Flo allows up to 1.5 litres of water to be boiled like a conventional kettle, or between 150250ml to be boiled in 45 seconds. Users can select their cup size, press the button and come back to a perfectly brewed hot drink. According to the Utilita Report 2020, it is estimated that the UK wastes approximately 70 million litres of water a day by overboiling the kettle, equating to around £2million a day spent on unnecessary energy costs. So with the cost of living pressures and rising energy prices, a product which helps the pocket and the environment should be an easy sell.

“Climate change is having a profound effect on the kitchen sector,” says Martin Strack, ceo at Fackelmann Brands. “In the last decade
Products of Change editor, Robert Hutchins finds out.
There’s no denying it, Fackelmann is a brand that knows its way around the kitchen. Its more than 100 years in the international business of kitchen and cookware has seen to that. It’s also a brand that recognises the unique relationship the kitchen has with sustainability in the homestead. The kitchen isn’t just where products and produce are used; it’s where much of our environmental impact is decided. It’s according to the World Food Programme that a mind-blowing 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted globally each year. That’s enough food to feed two billion people –more than twice the number of those left undernourished across the globe. If food were a country, it would be the third-largest producer of carbon dioxide in the world. Much of our relationship with food is defined in the kitchen. It’s also where most of our daily recycling habits are formed. The kitchen isn’t just the heart of the home; it’s the mind, conscience, and consciousness, too. And Fackelmann knows it’s an incredibly important space to hold influence over. It’s why, a few years ago, the German brand launched its support of the Mini Chefs Group, an initiative organised by restaurants across the region, supplying them with kitchen access and utensils to not only train children to cook and eat food, but educate them on a healthy relationship with food, the benefits of buying and eating seasonal produce, and how to use food as a tool to reduce their impact on the environment. But playing its part in cutting global food waste is just one of the many ways in which Fackelmann is acting to uphold and deliver on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This is a brand that plans to take the fight against climate change a whole lot further.
CARBON-ERA
When it comes to cooking up a treat in the kitchen, Fackelmann boasts a century of success. So why now, is the German kitchenwares market leader, looking to turn the heat down?

In aligning itself with sustainable development, Fackelmann focuses on three core pillars upon which its business is built: the introduction of new sustainable materials, making its production process more energy efficient, and ensuring its employees and stakeholders embrace the brand’s sustainable development goals. Combined, these three pillars will, states Martin, enable Fackelmann “to lead the environmental conversation across the home and kitchenware market.”
If you hadn’t yet noticed, the family-run outfit is currently and systematically overhauling its portfolio of more than 10,000 SKUs – adopting sustainable materials and removing single-use plastic across its packaging where possible. It’s a lengthy endeavour and not one that will occur overnight. It will, however, help Fackelmann deliver on its aim to lead market sustainability by reducing waste, plastic pollution, and CO2 levels.
A primary quality of the sugar cane plant is that it absorbs CO2 throughout its cultivation process, something which – in turn – helps Fackelmann reduce the greenhouse gas emissions within its product development. Of course, the company’s “modern molding machines” does a lot of the heavy lifting here too. Its manufacturing process can be carried out with “extremely low energy consumption”, while the solar panels that adorn the rooftops of Fackelmann’s German production hub – as well as the wood chip waste it repurposes to create heating and energy for its machines, means the company is also “energy independent.”
“This is what we did with our Ecolution range. The material PE itself comes from 100% natural sources from the sugar cane plant, meaning that zero per cent of fossil sources are needed to produce the raw material.”
“We’re not yet CO2 neutral, but the idea is to reduce that in the next ten years,” says Martin. “It’s tricky to put a certain target on it, but if we can’t reduce our CO2 in a certain process, we will invest in restoration projects around the world to offset it.”
“We were among the pioneers investing in the production of more sustainable materials when they first came up around 15 years ago, and today our approach is to make the materials we use 100% biobased without any fossil fuel components,” she says.
POC SUSTAINABILITY INTERVIEW PROGRESSIVE HOUSEWARES
Where the company’s sustainability journey will take it over the course of those coming ten years is described by Martin as “an exciting idea.” Fackelmann has stacked the chips heavily in its favour, setting itself up for a successful transition to a lowcarbon manufacturing and production process that will now be overseen by a dedicated sustainability officer “who will focus on sustainability at Fackelmann from morning to“Weevening.”werealso one of 50 climate leader companies to be represented at COP26 last year and we are now working harder than ever to align with all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” says Martin.
there was a strong focus on food safety, now the focus is rapidly shifting towards sustainability. This has a big impact on us as there is a big emphasis on our business to come up with alternative ideas and product concepts.”
63
“Our next step is to deliver our first sustainability report and lead the conversation across housewares and kitchenware.”
Inset: Kids in the kitchen. Europe's Mini Kitchen programme, supported by Fackelmann, aims to teach kids a healthy relationship with food. Right: Sustainable at the table. Fackelmann is investing heavily in overhauling its 10,000 SKUs to become more sustainable.
“This won’t happen in a day,” Martin reconciles, “but we have set targets to do so within the next ten years. It’s exciting to pioneer new systems and new models in the market. On a product level, it requires a lot ofAmonginnovation.”thefruits of that labour is Fackelmann’s latest product development, its Ecolution brand – a kitchenware line made from renewable PE and FSC-certified wood and a project led by Fackelmann’s head of product development Alexa Faisst.

The introduction of Kuvings’ B6000 whole slow juicer in 2013 opened a new era for juicing as the world’s first cold press juicer, which took whole fruit without the need for cutting first. Since then, the company has continued to introduce cutting edge technology in the sector.
Having launched its very first juicer 44 years ago, the Kuvings brand is still introducing innovative market leading products to the sector almost half a century later. Distributed in the UK by UK Juicers, the companies are readying the launch of a new version of the cold press juicer –The REVO830. PH caught up with Nick Ledger at UK Juicers, and Kim Jong Boo of Kuvings, to find out more.
THE FUTURE OF Right: The 43mm feeding chute for leafy vegetables, is combined with an 88mm chute for whole fruits, to create a new dual feeding chute. Above right: Kim Jong Boo is the ceo of Kuvings. 66
A new version of the cold press juicer – the REVO830 – is the next launch on the horizon.
Kim Jong Boo, ceo of Kuvings, explains: “The REVO830, a new model, is regarded as a complete version of the cold press juicer, and is equipped with better, innovative technology. First, it has a smart cutting technique, that automatically cuts long vegetables such as carrots and celery. This optimalingredients.”thealmostfeatureeliminatesneedtoprepare“Secondly,theRPMisappliedthroughthelow-speedcompressionextractionmethod(JMCS),”Kimcontinues.“A patented technology of Kuvings that maximises the unique taste and minimises nutritional loss of ingredients.”
JUICINGHOUSEWARES
Nick Ledger, director of UK Juicers, adds: “In recent years, we’ve seen a significant increase in demand for juicers capable of processing celery. Due to the stringy, fibrous nature of celery stalks, these usually need cutting into s hort lengths to be processed efficiently. The REVO830 has addressed this trend with the re-profiled PROGRESSIVE

“Lastly, by using a supercomputer simulation modelling system, we enhanced the product’s performance,” Kim explains. “The extraction rate has increased from 75% to 83%.” The motor of the REV830 is stronger and more powerful for excellent juicing performance, while also being quieter than its predecessors, for use day and night. Launching the latest juicer addresses a number of lifestyle trends and consumer demands. Kim tells us: “Due to the influence of Covid-19, consumers' interest in plant based eating has increased. Therefore, we are paying more attention to protecting our health by making various recipes and deploying more accessories, so that consumers can make healthy juice at home.”

auger, which pre-chops celery and other produce as it’s inserted into the dedicated feeding chamber.”
Inset: The new smart cap on the REVO830 prevents spillage and allows mixed juice by facilitating the mixing of ingredients when closed. It’s a square type and provides a better grip when dispensing juice. Inset: The' REVO830 features an updated auger and juicing mechanism, giving a silky juice with less pulp. The reprofiled auger automatically cuts ingredients in the upper part of the feeding chamber, easierenablingjuicing.
Inset: Kuvings directly produces and manages the motors for its products itself in Korea. For information on becoming a Kuvings stockist please contact Nick Ledger on nickledger@ukjuicers.com or call 01904 757070.
“It’s fair to say that a juicer is a long-term investment in your health. Juicers with the highest yield such as the REVO830 are also arguably a financial investment as less produce is required to produce the same amount of juice compared to less efficient juicers, and this will pay dividends over time.”
Nick agrees: “I think the past few years have given people more impetus to strengthen their immune systems and look to ways they can continue to protect it.”
The weaker GBP is also compounding this issue. That said, we have been able to absorb some of these costs ourselves and to date have not been forced to increase the costs of any Kuvings products.”
Moving forwards, there is plenty of innovation to come. Kim tells us: “Kuvings continues to put our attention to miniaturisation which considers both design and convenience for the consumers, and innovative technology such as IoT-connected features and energy appliancesdemandjuicerbrandglobal“Kuvingsadvancedbestneeds,theappliancesglobalthetechnology.efficiencyToleadmarketofhealthcareandtomeetconsumer’swearedoingourtoresearchtechnology.”Hesummarisesbysaying:hasgrownintoabrand,buildinghighrecognitionintheslowmarket.Asrecentforsmarthomeisincreasingwe
Kim says: “The pandemic has shaken many areas of our society. But at the same time, it gave us the opportunity to reflect on our health and the value of our life. Once you realise those values, motivation to choose a healthier diet is easier to sustain. The ‘make it at home’ trend has already become one of the patterns of our lives, and will be maintained.”
are leading the juicing market having already launched a juicer equipped with the IoT feature."
Focus on health
PROGRESSIVE HOUSEWARES67
As a result, despite the cost-of-living crisis, consumers are still investing in juicers and UK Juicers has seen robust sales, as Nick tells us: “The EVO820 still sells strongly in the current economic climate, as people will always place a premium on their health. We’re also seeing a significant increase in sales of the less expensive Kuvings B1700 model though, by those who are needing to reign in their spending.
The sector isn’t without its challenges, however, as Kim says: “The biggest risk to the small home appliance market is the huge recession, inflation, rising costs of parts and raw materials, or disruptions in production and supply due to long delivery periods. Nevertheless, Kuvings is doing its best to defend against such risks by directly producing motors which are core components, here in Korea."
Kuvings constantly studies the best ways to absorb antioxidants, vitamins, vegetable nutrients and physiological active substances into the body. Kim enthuses: “A glass of fruit and vegetable juice squeezed without heat is the most effective way to absorb natural nutrients. More and more consumers are looking for a glass of juice made with good quality nutrients. With this trend we continue to develop our own low speed compression extraction method technology that produces a healthier juice.”
It seems that since restrictions have lifted, consumers are still prioritising health and wellbeing.
Despite the difficulties, UK Juicers has managed to avoid price increases. Nick continues: “All costs are increasing (although the huge increase in ocean freight costs seen recently is slowly starting to come down).
The Beeswax Wrap Company founder Fran Beer says that, when looking for a licence to work with, “The most important thing for us is synergy with our core values, whether that is made in the UK, high sustainability goals, or celebrating female founder businesses.” She continues: “We want to ensure that we have a real connection with the brands we collaborate with. Our business has been built on working with our customers to offer better quality and truly sustainable alternatives to everyday homewares, so our collaborations have to be just as well-considered and relevant to ourThecustomers.”company’s collaboration with Emma Bridgewater has been particularly successful. Fran reports: “Emma Bridgewater’s Polka Dot and Bee print works so well with our beeswax wraps and has opened up the world of plastic-free living to a huge new audience for us. We are really showing that making more sustainable swaps in your home can beReflectingbeautiful.”on why licensed prints work well on food wraps, Fran states: “Our wraps are the perfect everyday item for licensed prints because we don't have to make any compromises or changes to the original print to fit a certain shape or size of item. We print the original pattern directly onto organic GOTS-certified cotton and then wax it with our unrivalled blend of UK beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and natural pine resin. The powerful Hyper Plush Queen of Clean vacuum has been “tweaked” with “things I knew I needed,” notes Lynsey, who has vigorously tested every aspect of her products throughout the development process. The vacuum cleaner includes “a turbo boost” and two heads for different areas of the house. Extoling the benefits of her steam cleaner, Lynsey confides: “I always do a steamy Sunday and I steam my son’s backpack when he gets home from school.” The appliance has a wide range of cleaning and germ-busting applications including mattresses, cars, ovens, shoes, toilets, windows, pet beds and reaching behind radiators. “This is an eco-friendlier way to clean using less chemicals,” Lynsey emphasises, adding: “I wanted these products to save people time and money.” She enthuses: “It will be a dream moment to see my range in shops.”

Pretty in pink TV presenter, author and influencer Lynsey Crombie launched her pink Queen of Clean range of cleaning appliances from Swan to an enthusiastic audience at The Exclusively Show (June 14-15 Islington Business Design Centre). The range consists of the Hyper Plush vacuum cleaner, Handheld Steam Cleaner and compact Handheld Carpet Cleaner, which the celebrity says has been nicknamed “Lynsey’s little pink pig.” Cleaning appliances have looked dull for too long, in Lynsey’s opinion. “It’s a dream come true to have a pink vacuum,” she exclaims. “A bright coloured vacuum cleaner is more fun. Kids are more likely to be involved with the cleaning and when displayed in a store, this will jump out instantly.” Colour coordinated appliances can also be left out on display and on hand to use, which “makes storage so much easier.”
Spanning all manner of brands, from artists to influencers, from museum archives to movies, the world of licensed housewares is reaching new heights. Highlighting the technology’s attributes, William explains: “Nitri-Black carbon steel is treated not coated, making it metal utensil safe and high temperature resistant. Anna Knight, svp of Licensing, Informa Markets explains: “The BLE Online Platform is so much more than a meeting facilitator. If you’ve ever wondered who owns the rights to which brands, the brand directory allows you to pinpoint who owns what IP. You can also view company profiles, see the content at the show, and plan it into your calendar to better manage your time at the event.”
Licensed housewares are a growing sector for Captivate Brands, with its Eleanor Bowmer range among the finalists for The Excellence in Housewares Awards’ (EIH) Licensing Award 2022 (see page 47). Kevin McKay, managing director at Captivate Brands reflects on the company’s licensing journey: “Mary Berry was the first licensed range we produced at Captivate Brands, and we launched it at Spring Fair in 2020 – just before the whole world changed. We had Mary on the stand on the Monday of the show and there is no doubt she was a brilliant draw. We were arranging appointments all day, and when she gave a speech to our visitors later in the afternoon, the whole place stopped. That’s the power of having a good name! Of course, the products have to tick all the right boxes too. We worked closely with Mary and her team on turning her thoughts into design reality and we are now onto the latest collection for her – At Home, which we showcased at The Exclusively Show and Harrogate Home & Gift. We have turned that success to other licenses too, launching a huge range of home and lifestyle product for Eleanor Bowmer at Spring Fair 2022. We have started the creative process for other licences too, which we previewed at Exclusively, including Yvonne Ellen. There are other exciting partnerships in the pipeline, and, with each one, we look at it from the Captivate Brands’ standpoint of quality, style and value.”

The Snowman™, originally created and illustrated by Raymond Briggs (CBE), is one of the world's most popular and iconic picture books and is synonymous with Christmas time. “Many of the products that I would wish for have been available in the past –an oval shaped sieve for gravy boats, bigger thermal jugsagain gravy related (I’m not honestly).obsessed,Agarlic crush that really selfcleans would be useful and a dishwasher proof (not safe and doesn’t rust) baking tray that is truly non-stick.
Having spent many hours deliberating over first class products for this year’s Excellence in Housewares Awards, PH asked some of the retailer judges what one product they wished existed in the housewares sector, which doesn’t already. We also found out what would make life as a housewares retailer easier.
“To make retailing better, for me it would be that the cost of products come back down to a better level. If they carry on increasing at the rate they are, at a time of a cost of living crisis, many people just won’t be able to afford them. Everything has a top price, and we seem to be going over that rapidly.”
Right: Sophie outside Quince & Cook with co-director Neil McEwan.
“And no ugly things - just because a set of measuring spoons are well-priced, they don't have to be ugly.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
“We would love it if the government would consider funding retailers to attract and train new retail staff to deal with the current labour shortage. This would also help to make the wages more feasible in the current economic climate.”
“It’s hard to think of a kitchen gadget that doesn’t already exist. I was so impressed with The Innovation Award category in particular –there were so many fantastic creations. The only thing I can think of, which is more a dream product would be a self-filling wine glass. That and a self-filling coffee cup; both of those would really be the bees’ knees.
“Retailing would be more fun if we could go back to pre-Covid manners. Some customers… Really!
“An ideal product would be an automatic descaling kettle as we are in such a hard water area in the South East. No one descales a kettle here and it is a returned item we get all the time. This would prevent the customers from not looking after kettles and them going wrong.
“As a small independent retailer, I would love if we could keep the ‘Shop Local’ lockdown passion alive and kicking for years to come. It would be a dream come true if everyone’s first instinct was to hit their local high street before searching further afield. Did you know that for every £1 spent with a small business, 63p of that stays in your local economy? I love this fact from Small Business Champion Holly Tucker MBE. So, by supporting small you’re also supporting your city andClockwisecommunity.”fromleft, John Barry, Progressive Housewares; Carly Bullock, Lakeland; Claire Smith, Next; Margaret Osei-Bonsu and Lyn Walsh, Harrods; Rob Willis and Jo Howard, Progressive Housewares; Jason Somers, Divertimenti; Simone Hillman, Borough Kitchen; Tom Carter and Alison Hobbs, Potters Cookshop.

“Also, if we don't have plastic bags - then we really shouldn't have plastic bags from suppliers. If something arrives to us in a box (packed in six for example) and you have to buy a pack quantity, is there any reason at all that each item in that box also has a bag of its own? No there isn't. Stop doing it.”

Towns and high streets are at the heart of communities and provide a sense of place and being. Rather than giving up and just trying to repurpose high streets and towns into something they were never meant to be, our suggestion is to make buying local as attractive, if not more attractive than, buying online.
David Conduit, purchasing director, Harts of Stur, Sturminster Newton
Inset: A popular choice for a new housewares product is truly non-stick cookware.
“Housewares retailing could be made better if customers had disposable income right nowthe Government and the big press organisations are frightening people from spending money.”
“We can do our part through excellent service, product knowledge, enhancing the shopping experience and more, but surely it is possible to help make it financially attractive to shop in store rather than online. Suppliers could have a part to play in this (in our experience those who do this reap real benefits in increased trade). Government, as ever, is the key and could incentivise shopping on high streets by something as simple as differential levels of VAT with a lower rate on shop purchases. Local councils can help too through parking polices, and pricing and, of course, in partnership with government through a different approach to business rates. Vibrant local communities matter as places where people buy and sell goods and services, meet, socialise and more. It would be a real shame if we didn’t realise what we had lost until after it was too“Essentially:late. we wish for support to make it financially more attractive to shop local rather than online through. This includes lower VAT on shop purchases; and reduced shopper parking on showing receipts from local shops (shops sign up, council pays back from business rates, and customers claim through an app).”
“My dream housewares product would be a non-stick pan surface that does not degrade over time. Simple but it would be the ultimate product.
David and Ione Crossley, owners, Cookshop,SalamanderWimborne
“The one thing that would make housewares retailing better would be for the government and local councils to stop disadvantaging high street retailing against online. Online is here to stay and has an important place in the retail environment now and in the future. But so has the high street. They should be at the heart of local communities, but with crippling rates, exorbitant car parking charges and greedy landlords, the life is being sucked out of town high streets.”
“So many possibilities already exist, and we are always impressed by the creativity and ingenuity of so many suppliers. There really is a tool or gadget for almost everything you can need in a kitchen, but one practical wish is for an unbreakable glass cafetiere (although it would reduce sales of replacement glass inserts) and this could be combined with a twist removable base for much easier cleaning. Essentially, a challenge from us is for our creative suppliers to produce an easy to clean and unbreakable glass“Onecafetiere.wishto make housewares retailing better is more of a challenge to both suppliers and government. This relates to addressing the demise of so many high streets, though fortunately so far not the one we are part of in our Dorset market town.

DOUGH SO GOOD
With the recent drive to ‘back to basics cooking’, more consumers are favouring a “buy once and use forever” philosophy, according to the likes of Lee McDonagh, Samuel Groves’ managing director. The Birmingham-based manufacturer is seeing continued growth for its classic Mermaid bakeware in both hard anodised and silver anodised. Supported by an everwidening retail distribution, Mermaid’s consumer appeal is fuelled by some key trends, says Lee.
Meanwhile, Nordic Ware UK reports on the soaring popularity of its pure aluminium Naturals range as so many consumers are “upgrading their everyday bakeware,” notes Nordic Ware’s Caroline Appleton.
“Consumers are now opting to shop sustainably, choosing to spend a little extra on a purchase to ensure quality and longevity of use,” confirms Caroline. “All our Naturals products are made of pure natural uncoated aluminium for optimum

In addition, Samuel Groves’ commitment to reducing plastic is also appreciated by today’s consumers; all Mermaid bakeware is packed in recycled paper bags. Lee also highlights the trend to “buy local and buy manufactured in England, as this not only supports UK jobs but reduces the carbon footprint of the products.”
With so many consumers acquiring the skills – and the taste – for home-baking during the pandemic, there is now a trend to upgrade bakeware for durability. Meanwhile, as kitchens have become a hub for creativity, entertaining, home working and everyday life, there is also a trend for consumers to seek out bakeware that can be on display, complimenting interior décor and delivering style along with performance.
“This year is all about earthy tones and muted colour palettes,” notes Katie Maxwell, buying director for Progress and Salter at Ultimate Products. “The Go Bake collection from Progress responds to this popularity with a stunning collection of co-ordinating bakeware in terracotta and oat hues.” She confirms: “We’re continuing to see a rise in popularity of baking, following the boom of interest during the pandemic when people were spending more time than ever at home.” Katie also highlights that the unique Go Bake range has an “added bonus for those trying to make sustainable steps, as it is part of Progress’ Plant a Tree collection, where a tree is rooted for certain products sold.” New ranges from the iconic Salter brand include the Olympus bakeware collection, which combines “innovative design and another on-trend colour palette, bringing a touch of sophistication to any home,” She explains: “At Salter, we’re really proud of creating products that make our customers lives that little bit easier, and the Olympus collection certainly makes achieving perfectly cooked bakes all the more simple. Along with the non-stick coating, we’ve designed an innovative textured base which minimises surface contact and promotes airflow for thoroughly cooked cakes and desserts.”
“The ranges have an inherent natural non-stick which improves with age, unlike manufactured non-stick coatings which age and degrade,” explains Lee. “All Mermaid bakeware is designed and manufactured to stand the test of time and has been tried and tested in professional commercial kitchens and is supported by a lifetime guarantee.”
The Victoria Sponge Cake is the undisputed winner for the title of most iconic bake for the 70year reign of Queen Elizabeth II. In a survey of 1,000 consumers undertaken by Mason Cash, the classic cake gained 77.7% of votes. Trifle came a distant second place, with 7.5% of votes, followed by Carrot Cake (4.2%), Lemon Drizzle Cake (3.7%), Cheesecake (2.75%), Black Forest Gateau (1.9%), Cupcakes (0.95%) and Tray Bakes (0.66%). Banana Bread - the lockdown favourite - gained a mere 0.57% of the vote. “Our tastes for cake may have changed over the years, but it’s comforting to see a firm royal favourite like the Victoria Sponge is regarded as the most iconic British bake,” acknowledged Mason Cash brand manager Rachel Dunleavy at The Rayware Group. Mason Cash also used its survey data - along with search data and historical evidence – to create a list of the most iconic bakes for each decade of the Queen’s reign, starting with the Carrot Cake for the 1950s. The 1960s is, of course, represented by the Victoria Sponge, followed by the Black Forest Gateau for the 1970s and Trifle for the 1980s. The Tray Bake was popular in the 1990s while Luxury Cupcakes rose to supremacy in the 2000s. Lemon Drizzle was the top sweet treat of the 2010s and the Cheesecake has made a comeback for the 2020s.

Highlighting the reassurance given by long established brand names, Laura claims that “Tala Performance is the quality bakeware choice,” for many consumers: “Tala has earned the trust of millions of home cooks since 1899, supplying long lasting bakeware, icing and kitchenware.” She explains: “The superior dual non-stick coating of Tala Performance means it is super easy to clean, bakes are effortlessly released, and it is safe to use with metal utensils.”
Lifetime Brands has now launched a new range of MasterClass tools which are designed to help consumers embrace home-baking. Ideal for cross-selling with MasterClass bakeware, Claire explains that the tools are: “Designed with smart finishes and functions, including ergonomic stainless steel handles which are made for comfort and durability with either silicone or nylon heads that are contoured and flexible.”
Laura adds: “Manufactured from commercial weight steel, the range will stand the test of time and will not warp in the oven. We have added thoughtful touches as our cake tins are embossed with tin size to help bakers identify the right tin for the right recipe.”
MARKET FOCUS
At Lifetime Brands Europe, Claire Budgen, commercial and marketing director acknowledges that: “1mm heavy-duty, non-stick bakeware from MasterClass” has become a “classic go-to in the bakeware category as it is simply so reliable, recognised and trusted.” She notes: “We have a 20-year guarantee on this product, along with the ‘Buy Once Buy Smart’ guarantee over the life of our products. It is gender neutral with a younger section of the market that is eager to learn and experiment.” Like others, she recognises the sustained consumer demand for high quality bakeware that inspires confidence: “With the cost-ofliving crisis, many consumers will be looking to make homemade rather than shop-bought to save a little extra.”

Talking of this year’s bestsellers – and no doubt reflecting the national celebrations for the Queen’s 70-year reign - Laura Squire, marketing manager for Dayes UK, notes that, in the Tala Performance range “sandwich tins were a stand out this year; the Jubilee must have seen more Victoria Sponges than anything else!”
Like many, Laura acknowledges consumer attitudes towards investment purchasing. “Despite the challenges we all face at present, the consumer is increasingly environmentally aware and the ‘buy well, buy once’ attitude is on the rise,” she emphasises. “Many consumers do not want to buy cheaply: they re-engaged with baking through the Covid impacted years and they want equipment that will last, giving great results repeatedly.”

Business report “At the moment, trade is a little erratic and hard to predict. Consumers are more conscious of their spending due to the rise in the cost of living, but we do have more tourists around, which gives a good boost.”
Lively five “To celebrate our fifth birthday, we are doing a number of different things starting in August and continuing on for a number of months. We are running competitions on our social media, special offers in store and online, as well as in-store demonstrations and events.”
