Welcome to my last editor’s comment! After more than 22 years being at the heart of the housewares industry, I am moving on to a new role and handing over the helm to our brilliant new editor, Katie Roberts-Masons, supported by our wonderful group editor Samantha Loveday, and, of course, housewares industry gurus Rob Willis and John Barry, and creative director Mark Grayson. I am very happy that Progressive Housewares, HousewaresNews.net and The Excellence in Housewares Awards will continue to move forwards in the hands of such a talented bunch.

For more than two decades, I have sought out the latest trends, news, product developments and retailers’ activities and reported on a great many changes. This industry never fails to be inspirational, always creating solutions to enable us to prepare, cook and serve food and drink as well as organise our homes. Its retailers continue to raise the bar when it comes to exciting displays and enterprising initiatives: you will always be a source of huge admiration. I have had so many amazingly memorable experiences, including trips and visits, cookshop training days, judging days, conferences, interviews and trade shows in the UK, Europe and the US. Being involved in the IHA’s gia programme over 20 years has been the source of a vast amount of expert knowledge.

Most of all, I will always treasure having met and worked with so many wonderful people. As we all know, the housewares industry is a strong and supportive community, full of dedicated, creative and passionate professionals. It has been a pleasure to be part of this community over so many years.

Having been super-excited on seeing my first reusable stainless steel straw over a decade ago on the show floor in Chicago (now The Inspired Home Show), I have thoroughly enjoyed reporting on how the houseware industry has pioneered sustainability, developing products that provide greener options for consumers. Introducing the Eco Award to the Excellence in Housewares Awards several years ago, it is illuminating to see how this become such a prestigious accolade with a huge number of wide-ranging entrants. It was great fun to chair the round table retailer discussion for

this year’s Excellence in Housewares Awards –and another reminder of how our industry always delivers when it comes to ingenious new ideas.

On first joining the new title Progressive Housewares, one of my first projects was to coordinate the Housewares for the Homeless charity initiative, in collaboration with Shelter. I am very proud that this initiative continues with annual donations from generous exhibitors at Exclusively, now in collaboration with In Kind Direct, which distributes muchneeded housewares products to its network of charities and community groups.

My next move isn’t too far away from the kitchen – I am stepping into the garden, joining my husbands’ Heritage Fruit Tree Company, working on orchard projects that promote biodiversity and sustainability. However, I will always be interested in what’s happening in housewares, whether it’s the next clever gadget or proactive retailer event, and look forward to keeping in touch.

Finally, a massive thank you for honouring me with The Outstanding Achievement Award – this issue, of course, showcases all The Excellence in Housewares winners. I have been overwhelmed by your messages of congratulations and good wishes. Thank you, lovely housewares industry!

Industry celebrates at EIH Awards

The winners of this year’s Excellence in Housewares Awards were crowned in a glittering ceremony on Wednesday 5 October, with hundreds of industry executives heading to the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London for an evening of celebration.

Following a champagne reception, and before comedian Sara Barron took charge as host, a bumper raffle helped to raise funds for charities The Rainy Day Trust and The Light Fund.

Attendees included influencer, author and broadcaster Lynsey Crombie, Queen of Clean, and, although she could not be there in person, celebrity baker and author Nadiya Hussain appeared on the big screen with a personal message for EIH guests.

The evening reached an emotional conclusion when Jo Howard, the longstanding editor of Progressive Housewares, was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement accolade.

In addition to the champagne reception, meeting of friends and colleagues, delicious dining experience and Awards themselves, the Casino was one of the attractions of the night. Sponsored by Expose Travel, guests used their ‘Expose dollars’ to play for the chance to win a fantastic trip to Chicago, including flights and accommodation.

Meanwhile, a whopping £300 spending spree at John Lewis donated by BHETA, £250 of Ticketmaster vouchers courtesy of Exclusively Housewares, plus an overnight stay for two at the Royal Lancaster with breakfast were just some of the fabulous raffle prizes up for grabs.

There were also three superb £500 bundles of goodies donated by Salter, Progress and Beldray, a Prestige-ous Nadiya bundle donated by Start Licensing, a high spec bike worth £400 donated by Huffy, a sumptuous Fortnum & Mason hamper donated by Le Creuset, plus a holiday cottage for a week, kindly donated by Brian Clover.

Wüsthof to sell direct in UK

Wüsthof will be fulfilling sales and distribution itself in the UK from January 1 2023, the company has confirmed. The premium knives brand is in the process of setting up a sales force and will supply retail stockists directly from a Wüsthof warehouse located in the UK.

“We would like to expressly thank Paul Shelley for his consistent support and cooperation in the past 22 years and Haus Marketing in the past 18 years,” commented Jan-Patrick Schmitz, ceo of Wüsthof.

“We have greatly appreciated the professional, reliable and, above all, extraordinarily good partnership we’ve had from the whole team at Haus Marketing & Distribution Limited (Stoke-on-Trent) since Paul founded the company in 2004.

Thank you very much Paul and team!” Haus will continue to look after the brand until the end of the year.

In a statement to Wüsthof stockists, Jan-Patrick explained: “As a family-owned company positioned in the premium sector, close contact with you is an important driver in our quality and service-oriented corporate strategy − a strategy we have already successfully introduced across Europe, the USA and Canada in recent years.

With direct sales, we can better meet your uncompromising requirements and needs. This includes direct and comprehensive advice, for example, on the new series and campaigns that we’ll be launching in the near future.”

Morleys is the gia UK winner

Morleys Group was announced as the gia UK winner 2022/2023 at the Excellence in Housewares Awards at the Royal Lancaster London. The Group’s flagship store Elys of Wimbledon also won Best Department Store - Multiple Branch or Group Member (with Camp Hopson in Newbury a finalist in the same category). Morleys wins a trip to Chicago next March, with time to explore the city, attend The Inspired Home Show (4-7 March 2023) and, of course, receive the gia UK winner’s trophy at the fabulous gia awards night.

Above: The gia UK certificate was presented by Mark Chapman of the IHA’s UK office to Morleys’ Amanda Bell, buying director for Home and Richard Paulson, cookshop buyer.

The gia (Global Innovation Awards) programme is organised by the International Housewares Association and the Inspired Home Show, with Progressive Housewares magazine and HousewaresNews.net as the exclusive UK sponsor. The programme has been celebrating exceptional housewares retailers from all around the world since 2000.

Morleys Group will now compete for a coveted Global Honoree Award, of which only five are presented each year. The jury, consisting of gia’s retail experts and international magazine editors, will have the hard task of judging submissions from over 30 countries.

Sad news: Linda Pacey

Linda Pacey, long-term partner of Peter Battersby, passed away at the beginning of October. After a short illness, she died peacefully and painlessly at home.

Linda’s many friends in the industry will remember her huge enthusiasm and energy in working with Peter to build the successful brands of Maidaid, Typhoon and Charles Viancin over a period of 45 years.

INDX Housewares & Linens becomes INDX Homewares

INDX Homewares - organised by Associated Independent Stores (AIS) - will run from 21-22 February, 2023, it has been confirmed.

AIS said that throughout last year, it saw differences in how and why retailers buy, which has caused an assessment of how best to deliver its INDX shows. In 2023, INDX celebrates its tenth anniversary, and a number of changes have been made to the shows.

INDX Homewares will cover cookshop, small electricals, tabletop, home gift and fragrance, bedding and soft furnishings. The organisers say that the show attracts department stores, category specialists, high street retailers, boutiques, garden centres and online retailers.

The show is open to all retailers and will offer a commercially edited exhibitor selection and the opportunity to connect with top suppliers in a friendly, buyerfocused setting.

UK windows are great examples

Both of the UK’s Top Window Award 2022 entries (put forward by UK gia sponsor Progressive Housewares) were featured in Anne Kong’s presentation, which highlighted excellent display techniques. Harrods’ Look Who’s Home windows were discussed for their use of surrealism; the row of houses with open doors aroused curiousity and a sense of voyeurism). Moreover, Anne praised the brilliant use of symmetry in Harrods’ Smeg window, which was selected as Global Honouree winner. The Kitchen Range’s Paddington Jubilee window (the UK’s small store entrant) was highlighted for its connection to current affairs, the eye-catching “juxtaposition” of the handbag in the centre of the window, the use of colour and floating peppermills which drew consumers’ eyes.

“We are thrilled that Harrods has won the Global Honouree for gia Top Window Award for the second year running, and that display techniques from both Harrods and The Kitchen Range in Market Harborough were highlighted in Anne Kong’s fascinating presentation,” stated PH’s Jo Howard. “This is testament to the huge creativity of the UK housewares industry and our high standards of visual merchandising.”

Harrods wins gia Top Window Award 2022

Harrods, London is one of the three Global Honourees for the gia Top Window Awards 2022, organised and globally sponsored by The Inspired Home Show and the International Housewares Association (IHA). The Global Honourees (worldwide winners) were revealed as part of the Enhance Your Visual Toolbox/gia Top Window Award presentation by gia expert juror Anne Kong on 13 October during the IHA’s Connect FALL virtual event (see story left).

Harrods is Global Honoree for the Large Company Category along with Bahne – Regina, Denmark. The Global Honouree for Small Company Category is HABITARE, Loja & Atelier, Portugal.

Anne Kong’s Enhance Your Visual Toolbox presentation is available to watch on demand via the IHA’s website from early November, along with other Connect FALL sessions.

Energy savers turn to air fryers

Recent media coverage on the rise of air fryers included chef and cookbook author Jenny Tschiesche, who joined forces with a university professor to extol the virtues of air fryers in a feature on Radio Four’s Sunday news programme Broadcasting House (25 September).

Drawing on new research, the programme highlighted how cooking a roast dinner every Sunday in a traditional electric oven will cost around £90 a year whereas cooking the same roast every week in an air fryer will cost around just £35 for the entire year chef.

Chef Jenny admitted that she prefers chicken roasted in her air fryer. She pointed out the money saving benefits of quicker heating up time and much faster cooking times. For example, Jenny claimed that delicious roast potatoes (using pre-soaked potatoes) take just 20 to 25 minutes.

Bryan’s latest trek

“The International Housewares Association is very proud to have honoured the very best in home + housewares retailing through the gia Awards for over 20 years. The most recent gia Top Window Awards competition had entries from 10 countries, and it is incredibly encouraging to see the creativity and passion that retailers are placing into their window displays. We look forward to hosting the three gia Top Window Award winners at The Inspired Home Show in Chicago, along with more than 30 additional retailers who have won other gia country-level competitions,” said Derek Miller, president and ceo of IHA.

At Harrods, buyer Margaret Osei-Bonsu enthused: “We’re super proud and excited to win this prestigious gia Top Window Global Honouree award. Harrods prides itself in delivering the most innovative and creative windows.” She explained: “This year we really wanted to pay homage to the Georgian Houses we’re surround by in Knightsbridge. As a business that relies heavily on international trade, our domestic customers carried us through challenging times. It meant a lot to showcase the importance of our local consumers in our April Home Campaign.”

Rainy Day Trust ceo Bryan Clover successfully completed a gruelling sponsored 100km non-stop hike in just 21 hours and 41 minutes on 9-10 September. Sponsors included Addis, Kuhn Rikon and Home Hardware, with all money raised going to the Rainy Day Trusts ‘Let’s Save Energy’ campaign. The initiative gives away free low energy items – including LED lightbulbs and eco shower heads – to help reduce energy bills.

Mason Cash aims to inspire new bakers

Mason Cash (from The Rayware Group) has launched its Mason Cash & Me campaign, which aims to inspire a new generation of bakers through nostalgic baking stories, while providing consumers with inspiration for home baking.

Continuing into January 2023, the campaign is revealing a series of six real-life bakers and home cooks in their own kitchens, while they create their favourite dishes using various Mason Cash products.

“Having always baked with my grandmother as a child, learning many recipes, there was only one item that was routinely used as part of our baking routine: her 70 year old Mason Cash Mixing Bowl,” acknowledged Mason Cash brand manager Rachel Dunleavy, reflecting on the important role of the iconic brand in forging early memories of baking.

She continued: “My first memory of baking with her was some 30 years ago as a six year old. Her enormous Mason Cash Cane Mixing Bowl lived on top of the fridge, and I knew we were in for a treat if she reached for this bowl. I remember the bowl so vividly growing up, and even now, when I visit my 92 year old grandmother, her mixing bowl still sits proudly in its lofty position.”

Industry stalwart Jo Howard to step down, PH editorial team expansion and promotions

Progressive Housewares’ long-standing editor Jo Howard will step down from her role at the end of October 2022 to join her family business – a decision fully supported by Max Publishing. This follows some 25 years service as editor of the industry’s leading magazine, HousewaresNews.net, and as organiser of the Excellence In Housewares Awards.

Jo will be replaced by Katie Roberts-Mason, who similarly holds two decades in trade media communications and has been a part of the Max Publishing group for several years, writing for titles including Progressive Preschool, Progressive Party and the Licensing Source Book. Katie will be supported by Samantha Loveday, who is group editor of Max Publishing.

Rob Willis, director and co-owner at Max Publishing, said: “It is testament to Jo’s ability and knowledge that we’ve had to replace her with not one, but two editorial experts. Jo’s knowledge of the housewares sector has always been totally unrivalled, she is incredibly well respected in the housewares community and whilst it’s a sad day of departure approaching, we vow to continue her great legacy as Progressive Housewares remains the central hub of the sector with a very specific plan of expansion in the coming months and years ahead.”

FinaMill partners with Eddingtons

US brand FinaMill has appointed Eddingtons as its exclusive distributor in the UK and Eire, bringing the award-winning design to the market for the first time.

With interchangeable spice pods and single-handed operation, FinaMill is capable of grinding beyond peppercorns. The products can grind a range of whole spices with varying shapes, sizes and hardness.

FinaMill’s dedicated and self-refillable pods also eliminate flavour contamination and provide a green alternative to disposable glass and plastic jars.

The first launch in the UK includes ten skus – FinaMill in six colours (Midnight Black, Sangria Red, Soft Cream, Silver Stone, Salmon or Sage); FinaPod: ProPlus, for everyday and oily spices; FinaPod Max for large spices and dry herbs; and Optional rectangular and triangular stackable trays for easy organisation.

Alex Liu, founder and president of FinaMill, commented: “Riding on the huge success in the US, the expansion of geographic scope to the UK and Eire is a crucial step for FinaMill. We are so excited to work with Eddingtons to accelerate our growth in the UK.”

Richard Walker, Eddingtons commercial director, continued: “FinaMill will be centre stage since the product innovation within FinaMill really makes a positive difference to food prep and cooking.”

Jo’s history was recognised at the Excellence In Housewares Awards, during which Jakki Brown, editorial director and co-owner at Max Publishing crowned Jo as the Honorary Achievement Award recipient. Jo was unaware of the plans and was deeply applauded along with a standing ovation from the community she has served so well.

In addition to editorial team changes, Max Publishing is also pleased to announce that John Barry, currently advertisement manager for PH, has been promoted to commercial manager for the home, gift and lifestyle division within Max – spanning Progressive Housewares, Progressive Tableware, Progressive Gifts & Home, plus their associated digital titles and events. Rob added: “John has proved to be a real mover and shaker in the industry, always abreast of developments and changes. His remit is to sell marketing campaigns, but his clients see him as so much more than that – and he is. Well done, John.”

Dexam unveils RHS Mistletoe collection for Christmas

Continuing its successful partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society, Dexam is launching a Mistletoe collection consisting of tabletop and kitchen textiles and ceramics for Christmas.

The collection includes a cake stand, cake slice, mugs, water and milk jugs, a table runner and set of four napkins, adult apron, double over gloves, gauntlet and set of two tea towels.

Designed using a unique mistletoe sprig illustration, the inspiration was sourced directly from the RHS Lindley Collections, which houses the world’s finest range of books and printed materials on gardening and outstanding archives of photography and botanical art. The illustration was updated and adapted into a repeat pattern to sit across the products.

Helen Boardman, product manager of Dexam, commented: “Our RHS Mistletoe collection lends itself to the botanical and wellness trend that has been big news this year. It takes nature-inspired colours, inviting the calming energy and natural materials from the outdoors, inside.”

What More raises £18,846 in Three Peaks Challenge

The team at What More UK have completed their latest challenge, smashing their target of £15,000 for local young people’s hospice, Derian House.

Having completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks last year, Team Wham decided this year to push themselves further and take on the National Three Peaks Challenge – the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales. They successfully completed the challenge in just under 25 hours, even with time lost due to M6 closures.

The team challenge was to raise funds for Derian House in Chorley. The hospice provides respite and end of life care to over 450 children and young people across the North West. The charity only receives 17% funding from the government, and services cost £5.7 million to run each year, so donations are greatly appreciated.

Garry Ireland, operations director at What More, commented: “I’m so proud of everyone involved. A massive thank you must go to the team members, John Clayton, Lee Morris, Matthew Hand, Sarunas Silinis, William Moat, Tomasz Bulandra, Tomas Zablackas, Lukasz Werner and Marc Barratt, who have given up their time and trained in all weathers, ensuring their fitness for the challenge, plus Lionel Simmons and Carl Hughes, who supported the team during the actual challenge. It was a very tough day, but we made it."

Ann-Marie Fishwick, community fundraiser at Derian House, added: “We’re so thankful for the team at Wham for their tremendous challenge and for raising such a fantastic amount of money.”

If you would like to support the team, you can still donate on JustGivingwww.justgiving.com/fundraising/what-more-ukderian-house.

Scrub Daddy secures Asda listing

Scrub Daddy Original and Scrub Mommy Pink are now stocked in over 250 of Asda’s cleaning aisles. The news comes after it was announced earlier this year that Scrub Daddy is now the UK’s number three sponge/scour brand, according to Kantar, FMCG World Panel (52 w/e basis 20/03/22), growing 167% from the previous year.

James Tant, senior account manager, commented: “We are thrilled to be working with Asda and increasing distribution in multiple grocery. This is a real milestone for the brand and testament to the hard work of the whole team here in the UK.

“The increase in demand for Scrub Daddy products over the last 12 months has been phenomenal.

Ambiente announces its Trends 23+ themes

Ambiente Trends 23+ offers an overview of new products from the entire consumer goods sector. This year’s trends focus on sustainability, unexpected new creations and design icons.

The Trends 23+ is situated in the Trend Area of Ambiente (3-7 February 2023) and offers trade visitors and exhibitors valuable inspiration and daily lectures to explore the trends identified.

Above: Unknown Beauty is one of the three trends identified for 2023.

On behalf of Messe Frankfurt, the trend bureau, bora.herke.palmisano, will pick up on the trends and, on the basis of the themes, select suitable products for Ambiente exhibitors.

Annetta Palmisano, from the trend bureau, commented: “After two years in a state of emergency, the signs are noticeably pointing to a new start. In our research, we have found powerful living themes that answer the pressing questions of our time in very different ways. What they all have in common is a close connection to people, their feelings and their experiences.”

Trends identified include:

• Unknown Beauty – Strange and gracious

This trend reflects a living theme which combines grace and new creations, where the unexpected makes its way into the living environment. The colour palette features intense colours alternating with soft nuances, while materials focus on the abstract, alien shapes and unconventional surfaces.

• Calming Nature – Careful and pleasant

The second trend focuses on the calming power of nature. Organic shapes, gentle colours and a careful use of resources are the focus. The colour palette focuses on natural tones and the theme blurs the boundaries between technology, research, art and craft.

• Lasting Ideas – Passionate and Evocative

The third trend condenses the ideas of design icons into a living theme. Items that are based on iconic designs, but are in themselves new and modern. Strong colours, concrete shapes and a range of materials.

Meanwhile, applications for Ambiente’s Ethical Style programme can be submitted for Ambiente before the deadline of 18 November. As a curated selection, Ethical Style draws attention to the suppliers which make a special contribution in the field of sustainability.

CellarDine expands retail marketplace

Following on from its success with Virgin Atlantic, CellarDine recently secured a deal with DIY outlet, B&Q, to supply its bestselling wine accessories including coolers, chillers, gifts, corkscrews, bottle stoppers, cocktail sets and more.

Peter Dunne, md, commented: “I am particularly pleased with this news as it once again demonstrates that our brand has an appeal and reach to different sectors of the market place and our efforts to support sales through the press and via our website and online are being recognised. Huge thank you to the B&Q e-commerce team and Sarah at Nishant at Nivtar.”

CellarDine has also been approached by GMAX to manage its duty free travel business.

ProCook joins Life’s a Beach charity for beach clean

A team of employees from kitchenware brand, ProCook have joined with the charity and recycling firm Printwaste to clean up the beach at Weston-Super-Mare.

The team of 22 ProCook volunteers from the Gloucester HQ and stores in the South West, along with three Printwaste volunteers, collected a total of 80kg of litter from the beach.

Life’s a Beach is a charity set up by ProCook’s founder and ceo, Daniel O’Neill, which supports the elimination of single use plastics from Britain’s beaches and waterways, while educating younger generations about plastic pollution through school outreach.

Daniel commented: “It was a privilege to join Life’s a Beach and Printwaste for a fantastic beach clean-up.“

Rainy Day Trust ceo issues Christmas message

Bryan Clover has issued a statement ahead of Christmas highlighting the support available to companies to support their team.

Above: Samm brings over 25 years of experience in housewares, furniture, seasonal and SDA, buying and merchandising to her new role.

Quiet Mark’s latest addition to the team, Samm Swain, brings over 25 years of experience in housewares, furniture, seasonal and SDA, buying and merchandising to the role. She has worked for leading retail groups as well as consulting for a number of retailers, manufacturers and electrical brands.

Poppy Szkiler, ceo and founder of Quiet Mark, commented: “I first met Samm just over three years ago, when introducing Quiet Mark to her as buying director at Lakeland. Samm saw the huge benefits to the retailer and the consumer were immediately obvious and we worked together on a license and product testing certification to help customers easily find Quiet Mark certified products.”

Since that meeting, Lakeland has been one of Quiet Mark’s top retail group partnerships, which also includes Argos, Currys, John Lewis and The Very Group.

Samm added: “In recent years whilst at Lakeland and then through 2021 whilst at Company Shop Group, whose primary focus is on their social enterprise, it has become increasingly important to me to use my experience to do something that makes a difference to the environment, our social responsibility, and to the consumer.”

RKW’s Rob Sutton talks about UK economy onBBC news

RKW’s managing director Rob Sutton was the focus of a BBC news feature reporting on shortages in the UK labour market and the pressures on businesses earlier in October.

The Stoke-based company was selected by the BBC as a leading distributor of small electricals which is seeing high demand as consumers increasingly want energy saving appliances.

“We’re having to review our wage cost on a monthly basis,” stated Rob in the interview, confirming that the company’s costs are going up, including energy, wages and insurance. “Everything is going up and nothing is coming down.”

Rob described the climate for businesses as “really difficult,” admitting that: “It is the worst time I’ve seen since the 30 years I started the business.”

Left: “Everything is going up and nothing is coming down” Rob pointed out in the interview.

“Here at the Rainy Day Trust we have always taken the view that prevention is better than cure, and a lot cheaper too. We would far rather spend £500 now helping someone tackle a problem before it takes hold, than £5,000 in a year's time when their world has imploded,” he said.

“There are two ways of doing that. Firstly, get your folks to contact us now and ask for a 'Let's Save Energy' pack of free LED lightbulbs, eco shower heads and radiator reflectors. Croydex have just donated 150 shower heads to us. Combined, these bits of low energy tech will help reduce bills by up to £250 a year, every year. Secondly, make them aware that our free telephone counselling service is open to everyone to deal with the worries that are weighing them down. On top of that, we still have all of our regular assistance, too.

“More importantly, we can come to your offices and talk to people directly. That is where what we do brings benefits to you and your business. Happy staff are productive staff. No matter how good an employer you are, there will be things that staff won't tell you and those things prey on their minds distracting them from the day job.

“In the run up to Christmas, we can help to reduce worry as well as bills. Email me on bryan@rainydaytrust.org.uk for our latest booklet on what we can do, and the application form for the Let's Save Energy pack.”

KitchenAid expands cooking horizons at Christmas

KitchenAid’s Aluminized Steel Non-Stick Bakeware collection is made from scratch and corrosion resistant, high quality 0.8mm aluminized steel which maintains its shape and won’t warp or bend.

Oven safe to 230°c, the range is dishwasher safe and has a healthy, PFAS-free non-stick coating for easy release. The items also feature wide handles to allow safe transport from oven to worktop.

The Tulband Cake Form Tin is the secret to baking a festive centrepiece; while the Mini Rectangular Cake Pan is ideal for sweet and savoury festive cakes and breads; the Springform Tin features quick-release sides which remove easily from the base to preserve the shape of bakes and cheesecakes.

Neil McIntosh, UK country manager of The Cookware Company, said: “With the current unprecedented levels of interest in baking, fuelled by more time spent in the home and a non-ending supply of fabulous TV programmes, print and online recipe columns and tasty Instagram feeds, demand for bakeware is at an all-time high.

“Our diverse range of shapes and sizes, made with our healthy, PFAS-free non-stick coating for easy release, meets every baking need and ensures picture perfect results every time.”

Hyve Group launches Source Home & Gift

Providing visitors with the opportunity to connect with global manufacturers and co-create new products and ranges, Source Home & Gift will introduce ethical and sustainable manufacturers from around the world to the UK market. The show is designed to bring together the world’s most responsible manufacturers across a range of categories including homewares, textiles, gifts and toys.

Suzanne Ellingham, sourcing director at Autumn Fair, commented: “The launch of Source Home & Gift indicates a step change in the way retailers and brands are now able to source products. Retailers and buying teams have been telling us that they are actively looking for responsible manufacturers, those that are not just producing sustainable products, but those that pay fair wages and are fundamentally operating in the right way.

“The challenge for them is finding those manufacturers. Source Home and Gift solves that problem, and by working with governments around the world who are supporting this new sourcing dynamic.” Source Home and Gift will run from 5-8 February 2023 at Birmingham’s NEC.

tackles cyber crime

The prevention of cyber crime is the topic of a BHETA (The British Home Enhancement Trade Association) training webinar on Wednesday 23 November at 10.30am. The speaker will be Arun Barnard, cyber protect officer at the West Midlands Regional Cyber Crime Unit (ROCU).

With cyber attacks having the potential to cause major damage to bottom line, as well as reputation and consumer trust, the webinar will be an educational introduction to safeguarding measures.  It will offer concise training on the fundamentals of cyber security, ways to stay safe, how to identify phishing, scams, social engineering and other threats, and where to report anything suspicious. Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to pose questions directly to Arun. Commenting on the event, BHETA’s marketing manager, Steve Richardson said: “According to the government’s policy paper on cyber-crime (updated February 2022) 39% of businesses had experienced cyber-attack in the preceding 12 months, some up to once a week! With an average cost to each of £4,200 for SMEs rising to £19,400 for larger companies, this is a serious threat, and I would urge members to attend this event in order to review their security.” * Register via the BHETA website or contact Rajni Kaur from the member services team on 0121 237 1130 or rk@bheta.co.uk.

Retail 100 on what retailers’ need

In a BHETA webinar on 1 November, Retail 100 is examining the current retail market and providing tips for success in 2023. The event aims to ‘unlock what retailers want in these tough times’.

Retail 100 is a consultancy comprising four retail experts who all formerly worked at John Lewis, with collectively over 100 years of experience in retail, including homeware, tableware, glassware, cookshop, seasonal and gifts. The team includes Elaine Hooper, senior buyer, Anna Berry, head of buying home, Neil Amer, senior merchandiser and Sara Allbright, senior buyer.

The organisation advises suppliers of all sizes on business planning, assortment review, sourcing, customer, brand, online and sustainability. This also includes private label product development, licensing, critical path management and innovation and all recommendations are uniquely tailored to each supplier’s situation.

“It is rare for suppliers to be able to enjoy access to such varied yet detailed experience of working with a major retailer,” stated Seema Grantham, sector manager for housewares and small domestic electricals, adding: “I am sure that this session will prove beneficial for all parties.”

New members for BHETA

The latest housewares members to join trade association BHETA include Jomafe, Winnington, Birkmann and TCP, the manufacturing partner for cookshop, lighting and smart technology.

A category leader in the UK, Birkmann is a leading manufacturer of bakeware, including baking trays, cookie cutters and cakemaking and decorating equipment, including ingredients. Aiming at making bread, cake, pastry and biscuit making simple and accessible for the amateur baker, the company inspires its audience with new designs, original shapes and seasonal accessories all year round.

Jomafe UK was formed in January 2021 as the UK arm of Portuguese ceramics company Jose Maria Ferreira. Specialising in the manufacture of ceramic cookware and stainless steel cutlery, the company also distributes other housewares products including bakeware, tools and gadgets, food storage and wooden serving boards.

Winnington Housewares is the UK business of full-service custom manufacturer and supplier of houseware products, Winnington Metal & Plastic Manufacturing Co. A major exporter of stainless steel cookware, kitchen accessories, tabletops and catering products, the company originated in Hong Kong in 1975.

New BHETA member Technical Consumer Products (TCP) has been established for 40 years and offers a comprehensive range of smart products covering electrical, heating, lighting and security, and exhibited at Exclusively in June to launch its cookshop ranges.

Seema Grantham, sector manager for housewares and small domestic electricals welcomed the addition of innovative and forward-thinking brands to BHETA’s membership.

BHETA highlights EPR challenge

BHETA recently hosted two webinars on EPR (packaging sustainability) to keep members informed of the likely impact of the new legislation.

EPR is set to be launched in the UK in 2024 and will have a significant impact on all supplier companies. The legislation is forecast to increase packaging PRN costs by eight to 10 times. Under current proposals, the burden of paying for recycling for branded products will move from general taxation predominantly to suppliers.

The two events included a presentation from BHETA service provider and packaging legislation expert, Wastepack, with a follow up from Toolstation on the impact for suppliers and retailers so far.

Making connections

BHETA’s recent events included an inperson Meet the Buyer speed networking event with Stax Trade Centres in Manchester during October. Housewares and electricals were among the categories that Stax was keen to explore to find potential new suppliers. The association’s next retailer webinar is with Homebase, featuring commercial and marketing director, Dave Elliot on 18 November.

Sofia is member services coordinator

Sofia Sanchez has joined BHETA’s member services team to focus on relationships in terms of answering queries and providing information updates.

Sofia is also responsible for marketing and networking opportunities for export, as well as with UK retailers throughout housewares, DIY, small domestic electricals and garden. Part of Sofia’s remit will also be the marketing and networking opportunities for the Exclusively Show. Housewares, Small Domestic Electricals and Gift exhibition, which is owned by BHETA.

“I’m delighted to be joining the BHETA team in a role that is so varied and positive,” commented Sofia.

Business rates agenda

Writing ahead of the most recent political turmoil, Andrew Goodacre, ceo of Bira, acknowledged some of the impacts of the cost of living crisis on retailers, while reiterating the need for business rates reform.

Andrew reflected: “At this time last year, we were all running our businesses with a degree of freedom having left all the Covid restrictions behind us. While retail was still a challenge, we could all look ahead with more optimism, believing that the worst was behind us.

A whole year on and retailers are now facing their biggest challenge – even more daunting than the Covid period. The current economic crisis is a toxic mix of high inflation, rising costs, higher wages, diminished consumer confidence and ultimately reduced spending on the high street. We are already starting to see the impact with reduced footfall and lower retail sales in general as consumers start to be more selective with how and where they spend their money.

The differences for retailers between this economic crisis and Covid are the lack of demand (Covid may have closed your shop, but there was demand when you opened) and government support. During Covid, the government was quick to respond – something we all appreciated. This time around, there is no mention of finding ways of helping high street retailers through this.

The lack of support from government has been disappointing and frustrating. It is not as though they did not know it was coming because for 18 months we were warning ministers and government departments about supply chain inflation being much higher than consumer inflation.

Since last October we have been warning them about the impact of rising energy costs as members were telling us then that their energy bills were increasing by 300%. I am afraid that both the government and the Bank of England have been too slow to respond.

Last October, prior to the budget, we asked the chancellor not to increase business rates due to the rising energy cost faced by indie retailers. We were ignored at the time and now we are pushing for the type of action taken during Covid by reversing the increase in rates announced last April.

In addition to a cap on energy prices for businesses, I would like to see 100% relief on business rates for the current tax year and fiscal stimulation to create demand by reducing VAT. In the longer term, a complete overhaul of the tax system (including business rates) so that tax is truly proportionate to the affordability of the business.

As well as government support, retailers have to learn from this crisis. All contracts for business services need to be reviewed – from energy to insurance. Yes, time is short but, if you contact Bira, we can do the hard work for you as we already work with trusted service providers.

When I write about high streets and indie retailers, I try to be positive as there is much to be proud of. There are still the ongoing opportunities of local shopping, social media engagement and sustainability, as well as the rise of home cooking to the benefit of cookshops and housewares retailers. Retailers are known for their resilience, creativity and determination; they will be using all these characteristics and more to survive this latest challenge.”

Andrew Goodacre, ceo, Bira (British Independent Retailers' Association)

Bira’s energy tips

Sharing tips with its members, Bira has been urging independent retailers to take energy saving measures, such as, at the very least, switching to LED lightbulbs. The association has also been emphasising the importance of examining contract renewal terms.

“There has been too much apathy on contract renewals,” commented Bira ceo Andrew Goodacre. “All too often small businesses do not look at the contract renewal for energy (or other business costs) such as insurance, card processing, and so opportunities to obtain better deals are missed. This is where Bira and our service providers can help – members simply need to tell us what they want to know.”

Bira asks for clarity and certainty

Bira has urged the government to deliver clarity and certainty for independent traders despite the resignation of the Prime Minister in October.

Jeff Moody, commercial director of Bira, commented: "What small businesses need now more than ever is stability in the government so they can plan for the future. Retailers are now seeing real sales declining even with much higher prices masking the volume drops previously. Consumer confidence is at an all-time low, so Bira is calling for Conservative MPs and members to make a quick and correct decision enabling the government to focus on the urgent needs of the economy.”

Jeff emphasised: “Business' need certainty so they can plan as well as the consumers need confidence to start spending again - both can be achieved if the government starts to give real clarity now."

He added: "Quick and proper decisions on reforming of business rates, levelling up and tax reform now will also help the retail economy plan, survive and prosper fuelling economic activity."

Holly Wilson’s From The Frontline

I am just back from the shop after two full days of constant deliveries. The delivery drivers have been laughing hysterically as they just pile their delivery on top of the ones already waiting.

Gearing up

We don’t have a stock room really at PREP and no access except through the front door so large deliveries have arrived all week and have just been piled on top of each other on the shop floor which has made shopping a challenge for customers. It is an odd phenomenon though that the more boxes we have on the shop floor the busier we are, and we always have a good day when half the stock is totally inaccessible! I guess people like a bit of chaotic bustle?

It is great to be stocking up for Christmas and dare I say it the stock situation in places seems to be improving. (I know; I’ve jinxed it. I shouldn’t have said anythingapologies). Even though the news is gloomy we are full steam ahead in the hope that people will shop early to spread the cost and also buy something quality rather than lots of cheap tat. The last quarter jitters are in full force but, as always, only time will tell.

Richard Dare is nice and busy. They are finally taking away the restaurant tables from the parking spaces which have been there since Covid, so we are hoping for some spaces back to aid the winter shopping before the weather turns. So many of our customers drive, and, if they can’t park, they won’t shop. So, we’re hoping that’s going to really help lift sales with our regulars.

In Stokey, we have started work on our Christmas event. We’ve started early for once and I think it is going to be great. We are working with an art collective who make installations. We are all making amazing

stars which will be in all the shop windows along our two main streets showing that everyone is linked. Then five primary schools are also making stars for a little parade on Small Business Saturday. They will walk the street ending at our Christmas tree for the lights to be turned on with mulled wine and snacks. Wonderful!

However, before that we have our Halloween trail, which is now linked with Trick or Eat as we did last year. People trick or treat but also bring long-life food for our collection boxes. Last year we collected a huge amount of food for Hackney Foodbank and this year we hope to do even better. It is one of London’s poorest boroughs, so it makes a huge difference.

And finally, at the start of October, Fatima and I had the pleasure of attending the Excellence in Housewares Awards as the guests of Bira and had a wonderful evening. It was lovely to catch up with some familiar faces and meet some new ones. Sadly, although both nominated, we didn’t take home one of the fancy new look trophies but congratulations to all the winners.

It was especially lovely to be there to see Jo (outgoing editor of PH) honoured. It has been an absolute pleasure to be chased by her every other month for my column, which I don’t think has ever been submitted on time. However, Jo has always been very kind and patient and I will miss her but wish her the best with the Family Firm.

Best of luck for the final quarter. May the stock be plentiful and the shoppers rampant!

I’ve got to go and chase off a baby fox who is trying to get in the cat flap - eek!

BEST DEPARTMENT STORE - MULTIPLE BRANCH OR GROUP MEMBER 2022 Wner

Initial Reaction: “We were obviously hoping for a win for Elys or Camp Hopson but also fully aware of the tough competition in that category, so were absolutely thrilled for Elys to get it. Then, we were completely blown away for Morleys to get the gia UK award – such an honour to represent the UK in Chicago.  Having won it in a previous role, I know the high standard of retailers in other markets so will make sure we make our evaluation form as strong as possible; we have some great things to talk about, including Brixton.”

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

WINNER

Below: In her acceptance speech, a shocked Jo, who had been kept in the dark about the recipient of this year’s award, paid tribute to the team at Max Publishing, as well as her husband and daughters, who have helped along the way in various roles of news finders, photographers, sub editors and more.

2022 Winner

Initial Reaction: “It was dream-like to be called on to the stage following Jakki’s lovely words. Receiving this Award was an 'Oscars' moment and seeing everyone stand up and applaud was very emotional. What a huge honour, and what an honour to have been at the heart of this lovely industry for so many years and to always feel inspired by its creativity and innovation.  A massive thank you to my friends at Max Publishing (who did an admirable job of keeping this from me) and to everyone in the housewares industry - you are brilliant!"

The awards presentation followed this speech by Max Publishing’s editorial director, Jakki Brown:

“The recipient of this very prestigious award really is a true one off who has given several decades of their life wholeheartedly to the UK housewares industry.

There has not been a day gone past when a major issue was not been considered by them from every possible angle, be it from a retailer or supplier perspective.

Through hard work, dedication and commitment they have taken what was a relatively small brand to one that is now admired not just in the UK, but throughout the world.

There is not a supplier they haven’t forged an amazing relationship with, a retailer they haven’t interviewed, or a relevant trade show they haven’t trudged the aisles of, all around the world. They really have ‘done it all’ when it comes to the housewares sector. They’ve been a friend to everyone and a guiding light not just to their clients, but to their team and all who lean on them for their wisdom, history, knowledge and expertise.

Indeed, they have played a key role in the development of these Excellence in Housewares Awards and the Global gia awards in Chicago, a true conduit for all things housewares.

Famed for their integrity and their belief in fair play, they have also been at the forefront of spearheading and supporting the industry’s sustainable drive as well as its altruistic side, steadfast in their mission that excess product samples need to reach the hands of the needy.

While always to be trusted with a confidence, this individual has not been afraid to speak out, galvanising support from all quarters with their honest integrity and a way with words.

Even though they have experienced some extremely challenging health issues over the years, nothing has changed this person’s cheery demeanour, positive outlook or commitment to our sector.

After nearly 25 years in the role, this very special person is now looking forward to a well-earned step change, joining her husband in the family business, although I am sure they will still be taking a keen interest in all the housewares industry’s happenings.

I have had the good fortune to know our award recipient for over half her life and feel privileged to call her both a dear friend and a colleague.

Thanks to her hard work, talent and gorgeous personality she leaves a legacy of what has become an industry’s bible and a prestigious awards programme, but more than that she also leaves a huge treasure trove of industry admirers who will miss her as much as I will being part of our industry in the years to come.”

In the lead up to the big day, Progressive Housewares caught up with some of the finalists in the Retail Employee of the Year category at this year's Excellence in Housewares Awards, to find out their predictions for the festive season, as well as their top tips for retail staff during the busy Christmas period.

Hot water bottles and large cosy throws are a must have, as well as low energy essentials such as slow cookers, air fryers, electric blankets and wearable heated blankets. They also make great functional gifts.

multipurpose to use all year round so they have that added value for money as well.

“Le Creuset (below) is a great and desirable brand that offers good value for money on gifting products such as their range of mugs which are always in our top sellers this time of year. Denby is also up there with quality bakeware from the Quantanium range and a brilliant range of tablemats and coasters which our customers can’t get enough of. Gift food is also an increasing range for us, who doesn’t like a hamper of goodies at Christmas?”

Q2 “Customer service is key. It is so important to greet your customer with a smile as they walk into the store and acknowledge their presence with a simple greeting, it makes a big difference in making them feel welcome and creating a friendly atmosphere from the off. An open question is a great way to engage a potential customer in conversation. It gives you an opportunity to show off your knowledge and service skills, which they won’t get when shopping online. It’s also a more personable approach which is important to a lot of people.”

Learn your products Adam Towell, assistant manager, Borough Kitchen Chiswick

Q1 “Christmas is all about enjoying great food with family and friends. Decanters are elegant and are a great piece on the centre of the dining table, accompanied by wine glasses that fit the aesthetic. Gifts that can be used for making the Christmas meal, such as beautiful oven to table pieces for the turkey or side dishes, are an amazing present.

“Setting the table up can be very important to some and we aim to help by introducing them to brands that elevate the experience.”

Q2 “The best advice to all staff at Christmas and all year is to learn your products, listen to your customers and gather the information needed to find them the best possible product. Don't put pressure on the customer to buy, but let them leave happy and learning something new.”

Quality time

Caroline Aldridge, team leader, Fenwick

Brent Cross

Q1 “This Christmas I believe may look a little different when it comes to buying gifts; I believe customers will invest into spending quality time with their families. With this, dine will be popular as a category, for table settings to look traditional and festive to make lifelong memories. This year we have seen a trend of customers asking for items to help save energy, for example stove top kettles, air friers, soup makers and crock pots. Top brands for AW22 are Le Creuset, Zwilling, Chilly’s, Ooni, Dutchdeluxes, ASA, Costa Nova, Urban Nature Culture, Riedel, and Klimchi.”

Q2 “Be honest, helpful and pleasant to all customers and colleagues, working as one will help to get you through the busy period – I also find sweets help.”

Baking up a storm

Jim Davies, store, retail & purchasing manager, Philip Morris & Son

Q1 “As the homebaking boom continues we are finding that our customers are looking for high quality cookware, with many broadening their baking horizons and seeking out some slightly less well-known bakeware items such as madeleine pans, baguette trays and proving baskets. On the gifting side of things, I feel that people will

be looking to give useful, practical gifts rather than novelties. We’ve always got plenty of great gift ideas for the keen cook and the likes of Emma Bridgewater (right), Denby and Le Creuset are a firm favourite for those stuck for an idea.

“Cookware purchases for personal use as well as gifting seem to be becoming much more rooted in value for money. Consumers are happy to pay a little bit more for a product that will last a lot longer. Also, this year we have seen customers looking for energy efficient products and I think with the cost of living and energy bills both increasing massively, we will see this trend continue. For example, cast iron cookware from Le Creuset has excellent heat retaining properties and as such does not require the heat to be turned up as high, making it more popular than ever.

“As always in the run up to Christmas we can expect to see the likes of cutlery, glassware and bakeware sell well. This year I am expecting to see the fantastic and varied Christmas ranges from Emma Bridgewater fly out, Viners and Arthur Price have a great offering of new and classic cutlery sets that are sure to do well and we find Le Creuset

captures the baking and gifting market perfectly. This year’s Christmas campaign Celebrate & Shine from Le Creuset looks set to be a real winner too.”

Q2 “As we head into the busiest time of year for cookshops, my key piece of advice would be to provide as much training as possible for all staff, especially new or seasonal staff members. Training on key ranges will give staff the confidence to advise customers and answer their questions effectively, which will hopefully result in sales and return custom.

“Le Creuset’s online masterclasses are a great asset for new and existing staff to find out the features and benefits of the various ranges, and representatives from the likes of Meyer, DKB and Lifetime Brands have always been on hand to provide training when required.”

Getting out the best china Sara Hunt, general manager, Trevor Mottram

Q1 “I think this Christmas could be very interesting, and the country could be very well divided into the haves and have not areas. If we are being realistic nobody on less than £100K income will have any spare cash. So they are the people I’m catering for. I can't see the point of us trying to compete with B&M or The Range. We will have to carve our own niche market and set out our wares accordingly.

“People seem to be planning large Christmases as they feel that they have missed out on a few, lots of people travelling to family that they couldn't see before, etc. So large platters, good wine glasses etc. Everyone in Tunbridge Wells built an outside kitchen during lockdown, so a BBQ (below) is still a favourite Christmas gift for dad. You cannot get a workman for love nor money here and so many new kitchens are going in at the moment... hilariously mine was finished last week, too.

“So everything has to be for induction, Bake O Glide Induction Hob mats are brilliant especially now they are smartly edged. Knives are constantly being replaced and I hope to have Savernake knives in shortly.

Tableware is a bit of a grey area I keep being asked for proper ‘Posh China’ so I may have to have a splurge on that. Textiles are selling very well and I've found a few very small suppliers at Top Drawer etc - lovely young people with cool ideas, all made in the UK.

“Coffee machines are still selling well, but only the top end ones. As for air fryers, we don’t stock them - I’m sure they are amazing, but we won’t be looking to add them to our rather small space. As normal, our Christmas display will be going out later than mostlargely due to customers complaining when we've snuck it out earlier - but our customers tend to be a bit last minute.”

TIDY MINDS

With influencers and advertisers constantly streaming photos of beautifully organised, sparklingly clean homes, it’s no wonder that the trend for cleaning and utility products is continuing apace. As we all return to busy lives, however, there is also a move towards products which make the task quicker and simpler.

Nick Squire, managing director of Dayes, explains: “Consumers are looking for products which make cleaning easier and faster. Sorbo makes cleaning easier by clearly stating the application areas on the packaging (ie. kitchen, bathroom, dust). This way, it is easy to understand which product should be used. Using products

with clear benefits, cleaning becomes more efficient.”

Sorbo’s cloths also target areas of concern. “Each cloth has been designed individually to achieve the best results and tackle everyday cleaning,” Nick continues. “A few examples from the range are the Kitchen Scrub cloth, Screen Care and Dust Catcher.”

Along with ease of use, cleaning products need to do the job, as Liam Walsh, sales manager, UK and Ireland, at Bona, tells us: “According to our latest U&A studies, we are still seeing a floor cleaner’s ability to remove dirt and grime as being most important, followed by safe for/protection of wood flooring, consistent with last year.

“An environmentally friendly product is also more important to Bona users than to consumers overall. Bona cleaners offer

consumers a safe professional clean that makes floor care easier, efficient, quicker and simple.”

That requirement for sustainable cleaning products is seen across the board with cleaning suppliers. Emma Greenhalgh, trading director, UPGS, comments: “We’ve noticed that consumers are increasingly considering sustainability in their purchase decisions, gravitating towards products with a reduced environmental impact. Ultimate Products is welcoming this chance to make processes and products more sustainable.

Inset: Brabantia sees the home as becoming a safe bubble for people – a beautiful and pleasurable cocoon.

“Salter’s Warm Harmony collection features an ethically sourced FSC wooden handle and plastic used is made of 100% post-consumer waste, making it a great option for consumers who are trying to make environmentally considerate choices.”

Dayes’ Sorbo range is also focusing on sustainability. Nick explains: “At Sorbo, we aim to create products

Relax and unwind

Brabantia has a focus on the bathroom when it comes to organisation and tidiness. Twan Verdonck, creative director, says: “Storage in the bathroom is very important. The bathroom has transformed from a functional, to an emotional, experiential and even meaningful place. It’s the place to relax and become Zen.

“Storage and organisers (all in one colour) help to hide and reduce clutter, so your bathroom will look clean and peaceful.”

that are long lasting, therefore our products don’t need to be replaced after limited usage. Additionally, we try to utilise recycled plastic where possible and limit the use of plastic in packaging.”

Bona has the environment at the heart of its business. Liam says: “Bona is the only full system for floor cleaning in the market with an approach that combines sustainability, effectiveness and overall value to consumers. Our new Microfibre pads are made of 90% recycled content.”

Suppliers in the storage and utility sectors are creating products to make it easier for consumers to live more sustainably, too. Gareth Till, retail sales director EMEA at simplehuman, comments: “At simplehuman we try to make it easier for homeowners and businesses to do their bit for the environment.

“Our compost caddy is a good example. The stainless steel unit is attractive enough to keep on your kitchen counter, so it’s always ready when you’re preparing a meal, and can be attached to a magnetic

dock at the side of our rectangular or slim liner rim bin, so it’s super easy to sort your waste appropriately.”

Brian Walmsley, commercial lead at EKO Home, sees sustainability and value as key priorities for the sector. “By ‘value’, this means providing better quality, longer lasting products that genuinely help customers, at a time of huge economic challenges facing so many households.

“Together with sustainability and value, consumers are looking for forms and aesthetics that fit their homes, together with practical benefits for their households. Smaller homes and home working mean multi-functional, spaceefficient products are essential, especially utility and storage.”

In terms of aesthetics, UPGS is seeing a move towards neutral designs.

Emma comments: “Neutrals have proved a key market trend this year, with many consumers embracing earthy colour palettes, from warm oat, to rich terracotta. The calming tones and Scandi inspiration of Salter’s Warm Harmony collection ensure that these cleaning essentials blend seamlessly into even the most stylish of homes.”

Cleaning for the next generation

Getting little ones involved with helping around the home is now easier and safer, thanks to Clean Living International’s Kids Eco-Friendly Cleaning Kit. Each kit features mini 50ml bottles of the brand’s bestselling products including its Kitchen Cleaner and Degreaser, Glass Cleaner and Biological Multi-Purpose Cleaner, as well as three microfibre cloths. Sue Caldwell, managing director of Clean Living International, comments: “It is common knowledge that many standard supermarket cleaning products are packed full of nasty chemicals that can harm your little ones. Our new Kids Eco-Friendly Cleaning Kit allows children to play at being an adult and be just like you, without any risk of endangering their health.”

2022 hasn’t been plain sailing and the sector, like many others, has faced a range of challenges. Liam furthers: “We’re paying significantly more to secure raw materials and packaging, while shipping fees have also climbed dramatically. We remain focused on our strategic objectives and goals, while continuing to offer our customers a safe and convenient system of professional products.”

Brabantia’s Twan adds: “It’s a challenge that material, transport and energy prices have gone up. On the positive side, this is an extra incentive to speed up our sustainability steps within Brabantia.”

Brian concludes: “The cost of living crisis is impacting millions of customers, all retailers and our employees and suppliers, too.

“It’s essential that we are part of the solution by providing ever improving quality, value and sustainability of products, and that at the same time we make every effort to take care of our employees, retail partners and suppliers through the challenging months ahead.”

DINGHAMS SHELF PORTRAIT

The family cookshop business started a new era when sisters Becca and Nicola Hardingham took over the running of Dinghams in Salisbury in 2017 and reopened the café upstairs. PH spoke to Nicola about what’s hot and what’s cooking.

Family matters

With Becca currently on maternity leave with her new son Dominic, Becca and Nicola’s parents are stepping up with their help in the shop. Auntie Sarah (Hardingham) - who used to co-run the shop with her mother Anne – assists at the shop for two days a week, and two of Becca and Nicola’s cousins also work at Dinghams.

Festive countdown

“We are filling up with lots of new stock and installing our Christmas window in early November. The window has a quirky circus theme, which is intended to put a smile on people’s faces.”

Facts and stats

l Over two floors, Dinghams Salisbury is approximately 350 square foot in total.

l The shop stocks over 5,000 SKUS, rising to nearer 10,000 before Christmas.

l Facebook provides the best means of social media publicity for Dinghams.

The best thing

“We are family run, with friendly and helpful staff in an old building with lots of character; it’s a nice atmosphere.”

Café society

“The café brings regular footfall and takes people through the shop and upstairs. There was a café here back in 2001, and it complements the cookshop business. Our new winter menu includes warming foods such as chilli and jacket potatoes.”

ON THE WAY UP

“Homewares and gifts are a growing area for us, and we display these as part of our mix of products on and around display tables in the central area at the front of the shop. We like to stock homewares and gifts that need to be seen by customers – and are often an impulse purchaserather than products that can be searched for online.”

UPS AND DOWNS

“Most of our cookshop categories are quite consistent and we are renowned for our big wall of useful tools and gadgets. Our sales of Christmas cake decorations haven’t taken off in October as in previous years. We have moved away from plastic cake decorations, so perhaps a surge in demand for our eco-friendlier range will come a little later.”

VIP Friday

“Tickets for our next VIP Christmas Shopping Evening on the last Friday of November are selling steadily, but we are noticing that consumers are behaving more cautiously due to the cost of living crisis. Last year’s VIP night (a finalist for the Excellence in Retailer Initiative Award) sold out early, with a waiting list. Everyone loved the demonstrations of cocktail, coffee and kitchen products, wine tasting and creative Christmas tree decorating advice, as well as our raffle and generous goody bags.”

LDEN QUARTER

This October to December has never been more important to the hopes of retailers up and down the country. Reviewing market performance since March, it’s clear the cost of living crisis has had a significant impact on sales across our sector. However, despite the downturn, there are a number of key items to keep the golden quarter shining bright.

To kickstart our focus is the baking season; we have consistently seen a spike in consumers updating their bakeware during the autumn months, and with the thirteenth series of The Great British Bake Off running this only helps to drive sales further. To help support our retailers, and to ensure they win these sales, we have created a comprehensive communication pack Bake it! Don’t Fake It! which is FREE to download from our trade website kitchencraft.co.uk.

The communication pack includes all digital assets including social and product content, down to hashtags, and lots of options for point of sale to create a destination in store. The aim is to help our customers save valuable time during these busy months. We have also updated our bestselling MasterClass tools and gadgets merchandiser. With only a small footprint, 0.25m2, the stand showcases both new and current lines holding 235 products.

Complete with graphics, and supplied with hooks, it makes creating an impactful display easy.

In stock and ready to fulfill the demand are the new MasterClass tools, set to unlock the endless opportunities that come with baking and making at home, and to equip consumers with the best tools so they can bake and make.

Designed with smart finishes and functions, the ergonomic stainless steel handles are made for comfort and durability, and with either silicone or nylon heads they are contoured and flexible. Better still, they are designed to cross-sell with our award winning and bestselling MasterClass bakeware range.

To extend our range of tools further, KitchenAid brand's already distinctive line of gadgets and baking accessories has been expanded to include additional items, such as pinch bowls, mezzaluna, maple wood rolling pin and an egg slicer. The superb collection has really started to take off and now includes a premium collection of all stainless steel utensils alongside the core line of silicone, stainless steel and nylon headed tools in iconic KitchenAid red and cream colours.

The sets continue to grow in popularity. Each set comprises a compact glass dual digital scale for measuring both liquid and dry ingredients with innovative touchless TARE technology, an instant read digital thermometer with an ultra-thin 1.5mm tapered probe that leaves smaller puncture holes in food to retain flavour, and a compact one hundred minute digital timer with clip, magnet and pull out stand. Make your range stand out with Taylor – supported and endorsed by the acclaimed two star Michelin chef, Michel Roux Jr. You know you are in good company. This quarter, the primary focus is obviously Christmas itself. Our serve and dine brands allow consumers to ‘Unite and Share’ during Christmas and beyond. The new Artesà and BarCraft collections are packed with products that are a pleasure to have around the home, with unique designs for real stand-out, particularly during the entertaining and festive periods.

Artesa continues to offer beautiful serveware for every occasion with unique and high quality pieces that make entertaining easy. The new Serving Tree makes serving for a special

occasion or get together that extra stylish. The bronze colour coated tree boasts 12 individual sections for holding either glasses or party cones: a superb centrepiece. Couple this with the on-trend art deco style cutlery sets with a soothing green finish and the marblesque glass serving bowls and guests are in for a real treat.

With a need to save money, for most, it is reported the ‘make your own’ cocktail trend will only get stronger and subsequently, the athome occasion reignites wine’s appeal. Our stylish new items from BarCraft are in demand wine and barware accessories and gadgets. Whatever the tipple of choice, BarCraft helps all enjoy every moment as consumers unite and share, plus they also make perfect gifts. Then there are our unrelenting bestsellers to call upon to inspire consumers this season.

MasterClass Cast Aluminum continues to keep up its momentum. Both strong and dependable, these dishes harness the beauty of nature in three beautiful colourways including Forest Green, Lavender and Mint Green. Lighter than cast iron but just as strong, they are a go to for the casserole lover and for those looking for some warming food when the cold snap arrives. For those interested in investing in our cast aluminum, we have lots of great content, images, videos and even a display stand, which clearly communicates just how lightweight these award-winning pans actually are!

ADVERTORIAL: LIFETIME BRANDS

At Lifetime Brands Europe, we are working hard to offer our customers what they need. Each month we will see a minimum of two communications packs made available. The next campaign focuses on the cost of living crisis where we called upon Peter Sidwell, celebrity chef, to create easy and healthy recipes that comfortably feed a family of four for under £5. It may sound simple, but these recipes and accompanying videos have been created with our customers in mind. We want to offer lots of relevant content that is easy to download and share, all of which are sure to resonate and engage their audience.

We have so many ideas to share, we are very excited for not just the golden quarter but 2023, where we intend to work closer with our customers to weather this storm.

LOCATION,

With Elys department store in Wimbledon the winner of October’s Excellence In Housewares Awards Best Department Store - Multiple Branch or Group Member category, and Morleys Group the winner of the prestigious gia UK 2022-2023 award (see news), PH caught up with Amanda Bell, buying director – home, to discover what gives these stores their edge.

It’s some 95 years since the doors of the first Morleys department store opened in Brixton, but the vision remains the same –for each of its eight stores to be loved, valued and the first choice of locals.

“Our values centre on caring about people,” confirms Amanda Bell, buying director – home, “with our aim being to provide excellent quality merchandise that offers both value for money and products that exceed the needs of our loyal, local customers.”

Amanda, who began her retail career as a graduate trainee with Fenwick in Newcastle, joined Morleys in 2019, having previously been the cookware buyer at Bentalls, and subsequently head of home. “We had an extremely strong housewares business here at Morleys, prior to my arriving, with all our stores very diverse, based on their different locations and demographics,” she states. “Elys in Wimbeldon, for example, is a high-end premium store, across all categories, whereas our Tooting, Holloway and

Enfield stores are more promotionally driven. It’s therefore been about getting a balance across different mechanics.”

She says that what she has brought to Morleys is a greater focus on the individual outlets. “For example, there has definitely been a trading up at Elys and Camp Hopson, while at other stores in the Group we are continuing to be more promotionally aggressive. Plus, postpandemic, there has been a greater focus on the customer profile, linked to the individual stores. Most important though, is that all have kept their original names,

Morleys Group: background

Morleys is a group of eight, much loved local department stores, seven of which are in and around the Greater London area, with one in Newbury, Berkshire. The Group is named after the original store – Morley and Lanceley – which first opened its doors in Brixton, South London, in 1927.

enabling them to retain their heritage and their engagement with local shoppers.”

On the housewares front, there have been significant changes over the past couple of years at both Elys and, more especially, at Camp Hopson. “Pre-pandemic, we moved Cookshop downstairs to the ground floor, where home appliances were re-introduced, with a focus on KitchenAid and Ninja, enabling us to build back our home appliances business, and giving customers another reason to shop with us. As we came out of lockdown, John Lewis didn’t re-open, so it became a bigger opportunity for us,” points out Amanda. “In terms of presentation, the department now looks and feels more comfortable, and we’re delighted that this has been recognised at the Excellence In Housewares Awards, with both Camp Hopson (also a Best Department Store finalist) and Elys aligned from a customer and brand perspective through Le Creuset, Oxo and Joseph Joseph.”

Buying is centralised, with Richard Poulson the buyer for housewares and home appliances. “What we aim for is a balance between a category, such as Cookshop, and the branded story,” continues Amanda. “Customers expect products in certain areas in a department store and look for things in certain ways. As they tend to come in for one thing, and are enticed by something else; display and merchandising are key.”

She adds that their loyalty schemeRewards - enables customers to earn points which can then be spent in store. “In excess of 50% of our weekly sales are from our loyalty customers visiting week on week, rising to in excess of 60% at Elys and Camp Hopson, with the ATV significantly higher with customers who visit more often. And because we have these customers in our database and are able to see their spend history, we can therefore be more targeted and focussed with our marketing, driven by customer buying behaviour. This has enabled us to grow the cookware side of the business, with less promotional activity at both Elys and Camp Hopson.”

On the subject of promotions, one that was very successful, in terms of both customer engagement and sales, was a Le Creuset week held in May, which was about to be repeated in October. “It’s centred around a,

virtual demonstration hosted by the brand,” explains Amanda. “People simply click the link and join in.”

The stores are also trying to encourage customers to ‘buy smart’. “We are definitely seeing growth in people investing in the longevity of a product such as Le Creuset,” Amanda points out. “We ran a Shop Smart summer promotion in one of our front-ofstore windows here at Elys, and in October we are doing a similar campaign on home appliances. It will feature products that are energy efficient, to include air fryers and microwaves, as well as appliances that allow the user to control them from an app without

Amanda Bell: the lowdown

Three words that best describe you? “Passionate, determined, loyal.” What do you love most about housewares?

“Cookshop, the brands and the people, where there is mutual respect across retail. I feel very privileged to do the job that I do.”

physically being there.” She adds that today’s buying decisions are also influenced by sustainable and health choices, such as choosing to buy GreenPan.

Interestingly, using the front of store windows to tell a more appealing lifestyle story has been an important change for Morleys over the past two years. “It’s a teaser, inviting people to experience what’s inside the store,” Amanda emphasises, with recent windows featuring Nkuku and Sage.

What does she see as the challenges that lie ahead for Morleys? “Stock availability,” she replies. “It’s better than it was this time last year, but it’s still tricky. In addition, prices are having to increase, with business costs going up massively – not least our energy bills –so price points have to go up while still remaining competitive.”

While the cost of living crisis is naturally a concern, she points out that people are likely to eat out less, with the home becoming an ever more important sanctuary.

“We predict we will all be entertaining and cooking more at home, as we did during the lockdowns, with home delivery services such as Hello Fresh and the Mindful Chef allowing people to cook meals to restaurant standard. Consequently, they will need equipment to do that, creating additional opportunities for our Cook and Dine sectors.”

So, what else is currently in the pipeline?

“Our biggest project at the moment is a complete refurbishment of our Brixton store,” Amanda confirms. “It was bought by our chairman’s grandfather in 1927, and almost a century on, the customer profile has completely changed, especially in the last ten years. Originally it was a very traditional store, but now the area is younger, wealthier, trendier and ethnically diverse, with a big advantage being that the store is on the high street and opposite the tube station. The project was supposed to happen pre-pandemic but unfortunately had to be delayed.”

Among the changes will be the repositioning of the Cook, Home Appliances and Dining department. Previously in the basement, it will be moving to the second floor, along with Gift, Lifestyle, Furniture and Bedding, thereby creating a destination area, giving the sector a more urban feel as well as a lifestyle presentation. “Our ceo’s vision is a boutique store, and we’re all very excited about the re-opening in November.”
