Welcome to the Party It came and went in a flash of clown wigs, blood-stained cleavers and vampire teeth, but by all accounts Halloween 2019 exceeded all expectations. There can sometimes be so much build-up to the main event itself that the celebrations pass all too rapidly, but this year’s mid-week date saw the festivities stretching out over two weekends, with retailers and haunt attractions alike making the most of children’s discos, family parties, boozy adult gatherings and of course the all-important trick-or-treating. Above: Progressive Party Europe’s Rob Willis and Jacqui Parr. According to the reports this year – statistical evidence, sales figures, consumer reports and adecdotal feedback (aka industry gossip) – it seems that Halloween 2019 was a resounding success. Many sales targets and predictions were initially quite conservative due to the mid-week date, but with both suppliers and retailers reporting strong sales it soon became clear that focusing on meeting consumers’ requirements had paid off. Those requirements were many and varied, with no clear trend taking the industry by storm this year – in fact, the only clear theme was that people were following no particular pattern. Retailers were reporting best-sellers over the Halloween period that weren’t scary or spooky at all, indicating that the UK market may be beginning to follow in the footsteps of the US, where anything and indeed everything goes. In the meantime, it’s never too early to start your planning for Halloween 2020, as is proven by everyone looking forward to the upcoming Halloween and Party Expo. If that doesn’t include you; it should! The world’s only dedicated Halloween, party and celebration trade show is now just a matter of weeks away and is taking place from 17 – 19 January at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. This year’s show has more than 350 exhibitors making the most of the unmissable opportunity to show off their latest lines – with around 40 of those brand new to the show. H&P Expo is also partnering with popular haunt tradeshow HauNTcon for the third consecutive year, ensuring it will continue to be jam-packed with events, workshops, exhibitors and attractions. Show organisers Clarion always make a point of going the extra mile in looking to attract new visitors to the show and this year’s innovative addition is particularly exciting. The brand new SMART Event experience technology acts as a sort of ‘digital handshake’, allowing visitors to ‘tap in’ to booths they are interested in. They will then automatically be sent product information from that exhibitor, who in turn will be given their details, completely taking the hassle out of keeping track of names and numbers for post-show follow-up. Very clever! Progressive Party Europe is proud to be the international media partner for the show, so please turn to page 21 to find out about the show in more detail. Never ones to pass up a trip overseas, you will also see us there interviewing, trying things on for size and generally trying to spread the word. If you fancy a trip to New Orleans in January then this will be your last chance for a while, as the locations for the next few years have been confirmed recently and the show won’t be returning to New Orleans until 2024. In the meantime though, it will take in Dallas (2021) and Las Vegas (2022 and 2023), so there’s no danger of getting bored! For all its faults, there is no doubt that the party industry is anything but boring. There’s so much going on out there and we’re all so busy, that sometimes it can be easy to forget to shout about all the wonderful things you are doing. We know, we forget to do it ourselves as well. But athough we do our best to find out the latest news as it’s happening, it’s crucial that you don’t forget to tell people about the wonderful, inspiring things that you are doing, day-in and day-out, to keep your business relevant in an ever-changing retail marketplace. Let’s face it, you want to know what everyone else is doing, so share the love! Just email us at jacquip@max-publishing.co.uk and we’ll make sure your story gets out there and helps us keep the party industry connected. So spread the party love and have a wonderful Christmas. See you in 2020!

Carlisle fancy dress store reports Halloween boom Carlisle-based party and costume store Struts Fancy Dress has reported a recordbreaking Halloween boost in sales. The owners of the city-centre-based business have said that October sales have been the highestever compared to the previous October figures, with a surge in seasonal transactions taking place both instore and online. Owners Anthony and Jayne Ivinson have put the shop’s success down to its dedicated staff, who have ensured that
said Kate Springett, Amscan’s head of costume design. Mel Beer, licensing director EMEA, commented: “We’re delighted to have extended our long-term Warner Bros. relationship with the introduction of dress-up costumes and accessories for children and adults across DC Superheroes, TV classics and classic movie franchises. With the likes of iconic characters such as Batman and WonderWoman joining our offering we are already experiencing strong customer demand for the range and are excited to maximise this opportunity to its full potential.” See page 30 for more PPE's exclusive interview with Amscan on the collaboration.
As part of the initial range launch of over 30 styles; licences will include icons from the DC Universe, as well as Scooby Doo and leading characters from the Wizard of Oz; with many more to be revealed throughout 2020. The collection will include styles for children and adults, with selected matching options available. The new range, which has been designed in the UK, has been created in close collaboration with the Warner Bros. team to achieve costumes that are both wearable and authentic to the characters. “Developing a range that provides excellent value to customers in terms of quality, design features and price to offer a greater choice to fans has been a key part of the design process”
they have kept up-todate on the latest trends and Halloween horror films, with IT: Chapter 2, the Child’s Play remake and animated movie The Addams Family all making a name for themselves this year. “This year has been our best yet in terms of sales,” said Anthony. “In our 35-year history, this autumn has seen a surge in customers coming from Carlisle and beyond to our store, which has been complemented with a rise in the number of people buying our products online.”
Mintel forecasts Christmas cheer Despite a particularly tough year at retail, Mintel is forecasting some Christmas cheer for Britain’s shopkeepers. Latest research predicts that December’s retail sales will reach £48.7 billion, growing a respectable 3.8% compared to last December when sales hit £46.9 billion. Sales through nonfood retailers this December are expected to reach £23.9 billion (including £4.2 billion from online sales generated by physical stores). Mintel also estimates that online only retailers will account for £6 billion worth of sales, while total online sales this December will be worth £11.6 billion, accounting for 23.7% of all retail sales. Smiffys partners with Kerry Logistics for Chinese market Fancy dress and party company Smiffys has partnered with Hong Kong-based Kerry Logistics to extend its international supply chain as it opens a new distribution centre in east China. As part of the new ongoing contract, Kerry has set up a new central distribution centre for Smiffys, which will operate a pick and pack operation to supply Smiffys’ overseas markets and drive future international expansion. It will also provide global freight forwarding services including ocean freight
and supply chain solutions from China into the UK, Germany, Australia, and the USA. “Our supplier base makes Kerry the ideal longterm partner due to their presence across Asia and to fuel our expansion across the continent, from both a supply and distribution point of view,” said Ross Johnson, head of global logistics for Smiffys. “This will give us a cost-saving, improve our lead time and help us supply our fastest growing markets in Australia and the USA.”

A ghoulishly good Halloween for Rubie’s UK
According to the latest information from the global fancy-dress experts, Rubie’s UK had a fantastic Halloween, with double-digit growth this year vs. October 2018. A renewed focus on kids generic lines saw some strong performers, but Rubie’s brand portfolio made the real difference to this year’s Halloween success. Harry Potter's Wizarding World and Marvel’s Endgame continue to inspire kids, while the new Nightmare Before Christmas lines – Sally Finkelstein and Jack Skellington – were also strong. Warner Bros. horror properties were popular for adults, with this year’s movie slate including launches such as IT Chapter 2 and The Joker. “2019 has been a year of change for Rubie’s,” said managing director Holly Oldham. “Halloween has seen the start of our growth drive. We’re excited about the potential for Frozen 2 and looking forward to 2020.”
Major UK retail group removes plastic from Christmas crackers Major UK retailers Waitrose and John Lewis (both part of JLP retail group) have announced that they will be no longer be selling Christmas crackers which contain plastic toys and puzzles, from 2020. The move – which will see both retailers switch to crackers made of cardboard wrappers, filled with recyclable materials such as metal and paper – is part of the John Lewis Partnership’s ongoing aim to reduce single-use plastics. “Reducing the amount of single-use plastic in products and packaging is really important to us and our customers,” commented John Lewis’ head Christmas buyer Dan Cooper. “One of the challenges I face as a buyer is that we plan 18 months ahead, so it takes time for changes to become a reality.”

Smiffys acquires escapade.co.uk
Escapade closes down after 36 years Legendary Camden-based fancy dress shop Escapade has called in the administrators and closed down after 36 years in business. Escapade, one of London’s best-known fancy dress and party accessories retailers, has appointed Lloyd Hinton and Anthony Hyams of Insolve Plus to act as joint administrators after the business became unsalvageable. A message went live on Escapade’s website on Wednesday
Brighton’s Party Zone relocates to Hove New Brighton-based party shop Party Zone has relocated to a new address in Hove just three months after opening. The shop, which originally opened just three months ago in August, was based in popular shopping location Western Road. However, a recent spate of high-profile closures led owner Romani Shehata to look elsewhere following the resulting decline in visitors to the area. The lack of trade has been listed as a contributing factor in the move to the store’s new home, Hove’s Woodland Drive. “[The new store] is much bigger with no rates, no high street licence and cheaper rent,” said Romani. “We are already doing much better on this side of the town.”
6 November, letting potential customers know that the shop, based on Chalk Farm Road, had ceased trading. “Escapade has been a major name at retail for many years, both through the fantastic shop in Camden and through its online presence,” commented Chris Isitt, vice president, EMEA & Australia, Rubie’s UK. “I’m sorry for Pendra and all those associated with the

The newest Reflex balloon colours will be joining Amscan’s existing collection, adding pink, lime green, blue and violet to the already-popular silver, gold and rose gold. These can be ordered as individual colours or as an assortment. The high-quality latex balloons have an amazing shine, making them the perfect choice for adding a touch of luxury to all types of balloon décor.

The new line of officially licensed costumes features the Budweiser, Bud Light and Natural Light Brands and is targeted exclusively towards consumers of legal drinking age. “The 21+ demographic has always been our core customer,” commented Robert Berman, Rasta Imposta president and ceo. “We look forward to outfitting all adults in these unique costumes.” Below: Costumes include Natural Light, Bud Light and Budweiser options.

business to hear this sad news.” Up to 24 employees have been told they face redundancy.
Shortly after Escapade annouced its closure, fancy dress and party product expert RH Smith & Sons (Smiffys) – one of Escapade's major creditors – stepped in to acquire the online business escapade.co.uk. The retail shop and business are not included in the deal. “Escapade has a long trading history and rich heritage and has been a loyal customer of ours for over three decades,” commented Smiffys’ director Elliott Peckett. “We are sorry to see their sad demise and we wish Pendra and his team the very best.”
Smiffys is accredited as a Living Wage Employer Fancy dress and party company Smiffys is proving its commitment to employee welfare by announcing its official accreditation as a Living Wage Employer. The company’s Living Wage commitment will guarantee that all Smiffys employees receive a minimum hourly wage of £9.00 in the UK (£10.55 in London). Both rates are significantly higher than the government minimum for over 25s, which currently stands at £8.21 per hour. “As a business that strongly incorporates family values and the ‘One Team’ philosophy, we are committed to delivering a liveable wage to all our valued employees,” said Smiffys’ director Dominique Peckett. “We want to recognise and reward the hard work and endeavours of all employees because such actions have cemented our position as the UK’s leading dressup manufacturer and distributor.”
UK-based fancy dress and costume company I Love Fancy Dress has launched its first licensed costume collection as part of a new partnership with Cartoon Network. The new range of licensed costumes and accessory kits is the latest addition to I Love Fancy Dress’ 3,000 product lines and brings two iconic properties - Powerpuff Girls and Johnny Bravo - to the UK market. “As the kids of the 1990s are getting older we have noticed a rising demand for 1990s costumes,” said product manager Carmen Nesnas. “The 1990s is the new retro decade for parties and we could not be happier to present these two wonderful licences to the market.”
Party City reveals ‘disappointing’ Q3 results Total revenues for the US retailer saw sales of party supplies in Q3 falling by 3.2% from a year earlier, to $540.2 million. Total retail sales also decreased by 1.7% over the same period, principally due to headwinds from the helium shortage. For fiscal October 2019 (the five-week period ended November 2, 2019), Party City reported a total revenue of $432.6 million, 7% below the same period last year. It wasn’t all bad news though, with Q3 e-commerce sales increasing by 11.6% – or 14.9% when including click and collect orders. Following these results, Party City has now adjusted its predicted 2019 revenue to be in the range of $2.35 billion – $2.38 billion, down from the $2.4 billion – $2.45 billion it had previously forecast.

Party Delights appears on BBC as Frozen II launches Party product was given a slot on prime time television in November, which saw Claire Grasby, md of Party Delights, speaking to the team at BBC Breakfast about the upcoming Frozen II cinema release. The three-minute prime-time interview took place earlier this week, on Monday 18 November, with Claire speaking to presenter John Maguire about the launch of the long-awaited sequel, which comes six years after the first, and how it has already affected the company’s party business.
“The last few weeks have really really ramped up,” Claire told the BBC, speaking from the retailer’s busy warehouse in Manchester. “We are now seeing that Frozen – as a party theme – is twice as big as the next biggest theme. It’s accounting for about 50% of our girl’s party sales at the moment as well, so yes, absolutely huge!” Party Delights has a wide range of Frozen II product, including plates, cups, napkins, table covers, pinatas, balloons,
cut outs, party bags, party bag fillers… “Everything that might be needed for a party!” Above: The BBC film crew spent time in the Party Delights warehouse.
Spirit Halloween raises a record $10 million Spirit Halloween, the largest Halloween retailer in North America, has met its fundraising goal for 2019 and raised a record $10 million for its Spirit of Children charity which aims to make hospitals ‘less scary’ for children. Since 2007, Spirit of Children has raised more than $55 million for Child Life departments at more than 140 pediatric hospitals in North America. “We’re honoured Spirit of Children continues
to provide magic for children in hospitals through fun and play,” said Steven Silverstein, president and ceo of Spirit Halloween. “[Our] mission is to support the Child Life departments in partner hospitals with funding raised mostly from the generosity of our customers. It starts with the Halloween parties we host in hospitals, while the funding also supports key Child Life initiatives year round.”
Yorkshire party business up for sale
Rubie’s Howie Beige talks Halloween with Fox News
Helium, a thriving balloon and party business based in West Yorkshire, UK, has been placed on the open market as its owners look to focus on other things. The busy shop is a popular location for families and businesses looking to get in the party mood with balloon décor, candy carts, celebration backdrops and decorations. With an active online and social media offering, it has been running successfully for the last 17 years and business is booming, according to owner Jenny Dickinson. “There always seems to be a reason for someone to celebrate,” she said. “People want to make sure their event is special, whether it’s a baby shower or a Christmas party. There’s huge demand for bespoke and personalised decoration, while the corporate side can be prepared to pay well for an event that looks really good.” The leasehold shop has an affordable rent which – according to business sales specialists Ernest Wilson – is more than offset by the weekly turnover.
Rubie’s Costume Company took centre stage in a Fox News feature in the lead-up to Halloween, which saw executive vice president Howie Beige discussing this year’s hottest costumes. The segment appeared on 'Mornings with Maria Bartiromo' on Fox Business and began by pointing out that Americans were expected to spend £8.8bn on Halloween product over the period. Howie pointed out that the number one costume for children this year is Spider-Man, highlighting that many trick-or-treaters will be wearing several variations of this costume. The pair also discussed trends, pet costumes and Rubie’s international reach.

Spielwarenmesse to continue in Nuremberg until at least 2028 Major toy fair Spielwarenmesse, which includes a hall dedicated to carnival and party product, will be remaining in Nuremberg until at least 2028. The early contract extension was struck between the toy fair organiser and NürnbergMesse. “Our aspiration is to remain a leading trade fair in our sector, and the plans to develop the site and modernise the infrastructure will be a big help,” said Ernst Kick, chairman of Spielwarenmesse eG. “That’s why we are very keen to continue this arrangement that we know and trust.” Co-ceo of NürnbergMesse, Peter Ottmann, added: “In our view, extending the contract is a threefold win – for Spielwarenmesse, for NürnbergMesse and for our customers in particular, in other words our exhibitors and trade visitors.” Spielwarenmesse 2020 will be taking place from 29 January to 2 February 2020.
Which? reveals independents and services are thriving The latest analysis from consumer watchdog Which? has revealed that independents and services have replaced retail giants on UK high streets. Services industries such as cafés, tattoo parlours – and of course fancy dress hire or balloon decor services – have thrived while many major retailers continue to struggle. The consumer champion analysed and compared Britain’s retail and services landscape from 2014 to 2019 and found that personal services, markets and specialists that focus on ‘experiences’ are replacing retailers hit directly by the rise of online shopping. The research found that businesses offering services or experiences that cannot be replicated online have prospered in the face of the booming digital economy. “As shoppers needs and habits evolve, it’s vital that businesses keep up with these changing trends and consider how they can grow with them, in order to continue thriving on the high street,” said Harry Rose, editor of Which? magazine.

“Not enough plus-size costumes” says US survey
PIEUK19 event hailed resounding success
According to the latest research from HalloweenCostumes.com, the largest online-only retailer of Halloween costumes, the US public believe that there are not enough plus-size costumes available. The findings came about as a result of its 2019 ‘Halloween in America’ survey, which saw Google Surveys speaking to 2,012 respondents to find out how the US celebrates the spooky holiday. Respondants to the survey identified areas where they believed there was a gap in the market for Halloween costumes. Nearly 70% of those surveyed believe there are not enough plus-size costume options
With over 100 delegates attending PIEUK19 – the leading industry event for the UK balloon and party market – the weekend was hailed a resounding success. Organised by balloon and party association NABAS, the event took place from 5 – 7 October 2019, featuring evening events, masterclasses and workshops and a fabulous gala dinner. Feedback from instructors and delegates has confirmed that with new skills learnt, new friends made, inspiration for the future and advice on how to take their businesses forward the event was everything that they expected and more. “The training at PIEUK19 was fantastic,” said Therese Watson of Rising Elegance. “It had a great NABAS family atmosphere where we were encouraged to try everything. Beginners and old pros working together is the best education you can get.” PIEUK19 also provided delegates with the opportunity to join in with a big build designed and delivered by the outstanding Tampilipe Corbelin and his team, which took place on Saturday 5 October 2019. Nearly 40% of adults surveyed said they will only wear a costume once, with one in five (20%) reusing it once and roughly the same (19%) using it three or more times. “We focus on full-family offerings, as well as having costumes for every size,” said Tom Fallenstein, ceo of HalloweenCostumes.com, in response to the findings. “We have 300% more plussize costumes than our top competitor, with over 900 styles to choose from, and carry sizes up to 8x.”
“Age-appropriate costumes have also been a real focus over the last few years,” added Tom. “For our girls’ costumes, we are offering more pant options as well as making sure that classic costumes which are usually targeted towards boys (such as police officers, knights, astronauts and firefighters), are available in girls’ versions as well.” Above: Almost 70% of the US public believe that there are not enough plus-size costumes available.
Trends revealed for Christmasworld 2020
The Party People launches The Christmas People Following its successful trial partnership with Halloween Alley pop-up stores, Australia’s leading party retailer Party People has turned those premises into temporary seasonal stores, The Christmas People. The Party People first started 30 years ago and is now Australia’s largest party retailer and supplier, with a flagship store based in Sydney. It partnered with Canadian pop-up retail expert Halloween Alley to open a number of temporary Halloween Alley stores across Australia for the recent Halloween season. These have been repurposed to become The Christmas People stores for this year’s festive season. “We are testing the temporary store concept further to see if its worth doing Halloween and Christmas back-toback as a ‘seasonal pop-up’ store,” said ‘chief party dude’ at The Party People, Dean Salakas. The Party People team are running the seasonal stores on a day-to-day basis.
The world’s leading trade fair for festive and seasonal decoration has revealed the trends and fashions which will be on display at next year's show. Christmasworld 2020, which will be taking place from 24 – 28 January, will see three main trends being highlighted for the 2020/21 season: ‘green ritual’, ‘silken party’, ‘happy get-together’ and ‘luminous celebrations’. PARTY NEWS
Clintons’ pre-pack administration concerns suppliers It was announced on Wednesday 4 December that card retailer Clintons – the UK’s second largest retail specialist – had effectively been sold back to its owners in a pre-pack administration deal that safeguards 2,500 jobs. While the deal means that the chain’s 334 stores will be able to continue to trade through the Christmas season, it does leave a question mark over the outstanding monies owed to suppliers, which includes a number of balloon and party suppliers.
BACI 2020 instructors announced The full instructor line-up has now been revealed for the 2020 Balloon Arts Convention Italy, which is being held in Milan from Friday 20 – Tuesday 24 March 2020. A wide variety of classes will be led by a number of international instructors, offering delegates the opportunity to specialise in large decor, centrepiece design, wedding decor or twisting, among many others. The instructor line-up includes names from Italy, Moscow, the UK and Australia: Alberto Falcone, Alberto Nava, Alessandro Patanè, Chris Adamo, Federico Onida, Sara Zampini, Sue Bowler and Vadim Shushkanov. Founded over 20 years ago, BACI is one of the most popular international Balloon Arts conventions in Europe and is suitable for all levels of balloon expertise. With a number of competitions, classes and the fun gala evening, BACI is a great networking and professional opportunity. The event is sponsored by Balloon Express and Qualatex. Visit www. bacitaly.com to find out more.
A number of bids to buy the Clintons business from those both within the trade and outside, were not accepted. The next option taken was to negotiate with landlords about entering a company voluntary arrangement (CVA), which would have needed support from at least 75% of creditors to go through. “Despite receiving support from a number of landlords, we were unfortunately unable to secure the requisite support
The latest development comes just three months after it was announced that Clintons was being put up for sale, with KPMG appointed to explore options. “Like so many of our fellow high street retailers, we have worked tirelessly to contend with the maelstrom of issues impacting the sector, from business rates pressures, to fragile consumer confidence and the lack of clarity around the taxation of online retail businesses,” said Eddie Shepherd, ceo of Clintons.

Guest Columnist
The Word Otn ee r t s e th
Greg worked in recruitment for a number of years before bringing the skill to Balloon Market.
The latest in PPE’s series of guest columnists, Greg Brown is one of the directors and founders of leading ballon and party wholesaler Balloon Market. Based in Southampton, Balloon Market also runs a number of hugely popular hands-on ballon décor courses and workshops. As if that wasn’t enough, Greg is also the brains and presenter behind BMTV, a content-rich YouTube channel with over 27,000 subscribers. In this column for PPE, Greg takes a look at the importance of recruitment in the world of the SME.
RECRUITING FOR SUCCESS
you’ll need to recruit people to help you. And that can be very daunting! After 20 years of recruitment, 14 for my own business and six in the corporate world, I have learned a lot about how to do this well... and not so well! One thing to remember is that recruitment is not an exact science. You can use all the tests, interviews and assessments available but you’ll never actually know if a person will work out until they start. And sometimes not even then!
While there are no guarantees, there are a number things you can do to reduce the likelihood of recruiting the wrong person. Here are some of the lessons I’ve learned over the years: RECRUIT PREDOMINANTLY ON VALUES. In the corporate world, competency-based recruitment is the norm. You need to find the people with the skills; that’s a given. However, in isolation, it is not the most successful way to recruit. I’ve seen ads for drivers guaranteeing a job if they
ABOVE: Half the battle is getting the right message out there. BELOW: The waiting game: recruitment can be a costly and time-consuming process.
have the right kind of driving licence. However, what about how they deliver to your hard-earned customers? Are they polite? Do they represent your company? Values trump competencies, although ideally you want both. DON’T ‘GIVE PEOPLE A CHANCE’. After 13 years of recruitment, I interviewed a person who told me a few stories that should have had alarm bells sounding. I pushed those warnings to the back of my mind because I felt I could ‘do a good thing’ for someone. BIG mistake! You have worked hard to get your business to where it is and it’s too valuable to take a risk like that. HIRE SLOW BUT HIRE FAST! (READ IT AGAIN, IT’S NOT THE USUAL SAYING) By hire slow, I mean take time finding the right person. Do not take the first person that would fill the slot. Almost without fail, it leads to problems which often lead to more people leaving. By hire fast, I mean do not take time with the selection process and decision-making. In fact, selection should be super-fast. If candidates are good, other recruiters will be right on them. Decide fast! Get them in fast! Start them fast! HAVE A WELL-DEFINED PROCESS. This is ours: advertise online (with a clear
job description and person specification), screen CVs, send online questionnaire (values and skills based), have a ten-minute telephone call, and finally a four-hour assessment. We encourage every candidate who makes it to the assessment stage to use the day to assess the people, the environment and the work itself to see if they like it. It is not just for us to assess them. ASK FOR THE OPINION OF YOUR TEAM. After all, they’re the people the potential recruit will be working with. Even if they can offer nothing more than a gut feel for them, it’s quite often rather insightful. FOLLOW YOUR OWN GUT INSTINCT. If you do everything as above but your gut still says no, go with your gut. Years ago, I was interviewing with two other managers for a position in the casino on a cruise ship. There was something not quite right about one candidate. I couldn’t put my finger on it. The others liked him, so it was two against one and he was hired. A few days into his contract, he was repatriated on medical grounds. It turns out he had consumed enough alcohol to kill a horse! Sometimes your gut just knows – we just need to tune in! Recruitment is not easy and is arguably the most important part of growing a business. Do it right from the beginning and your growth will be smoother.

FEEDBACK HALLOWEEN 2019: As the spookiest event of the year and the highlight of every party retailer’s calendar, this year’s mid-week Halloween saw the celebrations stretching out over two weekends, making the most of all opportunities for children’s discos, family parties, adult gatherings and of course the all-important trick-ortreating. Here’s how it went down...
“Classic Halloween trends performed well in the partyware category such as Haunted House and Pumpkins, as well as family-friendly ensembles. Zombies continues to be a top selling theme, particularly across dress-up; indicating there is still a demand for ‘scarier’ Halloween costume options. Our new foil balloon additions for 2019 performed well including the Iridescent Ghost SuperShape, as did our existing licensed Jack Skellington AirWalker.” CHARLOTTE TERRY marketing executive, Amscan
“Halloween has been fantastic for us! We are happy with how it went and thank our incredible retailers for their support over a busy season. It was testament to the Bristol Novelty team who all put in a phenomenal effort to ensure deliveries went out on time. Clear trends were clowns this year with the big cinematic releases, but I was personally pleased to see that generic costumes were selling well, even ones we didn’t expect to be associated with Halloween. It clearly shows that customers are being more creative with their approach to costumes, which is what we encourage here. Next year is a big one as Halloween falls on a Saturday and if this year was anything to go by, we can expect it to be extremely busy – so make sure you get your orders in early!” FRAN HALES marketing manager, Bristol Novelty

DOOM OR DELIGHT?
“Halloween exceeded our expectations. We didn’t know what to expect, but the last two October weekends were the busiest days we have had in a long time, which was a nice surprise. The website did better than the shops though, which proves that customers’ habits are changing more towards the online shopping. We didn’t see any clear trends. Customers were buying different costumes, even non-Halloween ones – for example a banana outfit made
it into the top five! The most popular costumes were inspired by movies, with generic ones such as pirates, nuns and the Day of the Dead all making an appearance in the top ten. InCharacter’s Baby Bat Costume was a great success (number four in the top sellers) which shows customers are still happy to pay for higher quality children costumes rather than buying cheap online or in the supermarkets. The majority of other retailers are also positive and had a good Halloween. It is a great sign for the next year when Halloween falls on Saturday – fingers crossed it will be a big one!” EMMA ANGEL director, Angels Fancy Dress
“Overall Halloween numbers were very healthy, buoyed by good growth on our European websites. In the UK we found boys and girls costumes were very strong but adult costumes continue to be difficult. TV and film trends did particularly well, with IT and Joker having been released this year. Halloween decorations were very strong too, particularly the higher price point items such as the £200+ animatronics, which shows that customers are prepared to spend more for the ‘wow’ factor when decorating their houses. Overall the season was a success despite the UK market being difficult. However with Halloween falling on a Saturday next year we anticipate far more people will have parties which should be great for business!” JESSICA TALBOT marketing manager, Party Delights Above: The Party Delight website made the most of its Halloween offering.

FEEDBACK C O N T I N U E D “Horror has really taken off for us this year and we had an amazing Halloween with our Annabelle and Pennywise cutouts. They flew out the door – possibly because cinemas were using them to promote their IT 4D experience!” LUCY THOMPSON digital, sales and marketing director, Star Cutouts Below: The Pennywise cutout was used in cinema foyers.
“Disguise had a really great year overall with double digit growth driven by several strong entertainment releases and our video game portfolio. It was as busy as we expected and we were pleased to see strong sell through that matched our stronger sell in. Inflatables and family dressing continue to gain popularity for Halloween, but overall, movie releases still dominate the “Halloween, as usual, was another successful event for Henbrandt. Blood, bloodied weapons and pumpkin carving kits are always top sellers, with our trick or treat bags, Halloween masks and costumes literally flying out the door. Every year has topped the previous one so we will look forward to this season in 2020.” GEORGE MORGAN design manager, Henbrandt
licensed costume business. As expected, there was a huge growth in online sales which was supported by our Amazon partnership in Europe with Morph Costumes. Moving into 2020, we should see a better year given that Halloween falls on a Saturday next year and consumers are willing to spend more money on the holiday when it falls on a weekend.” TARA HEFTER executive vice president and general manager, Disguise
“Rubie’s UK had a fantastic Halloween, with double-digit growth in October vs. 2018. Our renewed focus on kids generic lines created some great performers, but it was the strength of our brand portfolio that really made the difference and we certainly benefitted from this year’s movie slate, with launches like IT Chapter 2 and psychological thriller The Joker, which created a renewed interest in all iterations of the character. 2019 has been a year of change for Rubie’s and Halloween has seen the start of our growth drive. We’re looking forward to 2020.” HOLLY OLDHAM managing director, Rubie’s UK
“Halloween is not a key event for us, but we can’t complain. Accessories are still very popular among our customers and fake blood is a bestselling item. Our customers are divided into two groups; they either buy low cost costumes to wear once or they dress to impress and buy unique expensive accessories. Lot of customers bought costumes related to the church, such as a priest, nun or monk.” MAGDALENA WOJTECZE buyer, GoDan Right: Accessories were key for GoDan this Halloween.
“Halloween has continued to prove itself as a useful date on the calendar for the balloon industry, with consumers keen to decorate houses, shops and restaurants. The Golden Skull large shape continued to be a popular option, as well did the new addition Jack N Ghost microfoil shape. Jack O’lanterns were definitely on trend with the latex and foil Jack Faces also performing well. In 2020, Halloween will fall on a Saturday which looks set to be a boost for the party industry. We’d expect to see more home party activity around the date, with more celebrations than previous years.” JULIE DOMMETT head of marketing, Pioneer Europe
“With Halloween coming and going as quickly as a bat out of hell, this year it was noticeable that it was on a week day, with sales stretched across a longer period of time rather than a mad rush just for the one day. There was uncertainty as to which day people would celebrate however it seems that in the end there were plenty of parties and events Above: Widmann had a going on both the strong Halloween in 2019. weekend before and the one after Halloween. As always we’re already looking forward to next year, especially with it being on a Saturday!” SHANNON ELMORE marketing executive, Sancto (Widmann)
“Halloween 2019 was great for us. There were no big surprises in terms of designs and customer demand, but together with our retail partners we did our homework and created what the customers wanted. Clear Halloween trends for us were character-based suits. Of course the Joker costume was a big hit, but also our Riddler and Harry Potter outfits did very well alongside our more traditional Halloween suits such as the killer clown suit. Of course, Halloween being on a Thursday didn’t hurt either as we saw a much longer sales period with a higher amount of replenishment orders due to the fact that people celebrated Halloween on two weekends.” MICHEL SCHRAMA marketing manager, OppoSuits

A Perfect Party Partnership As one of the biggest entertainment and media organisations in the world, Warner Bros. gives its licensing partners access to an incredible portfolio of A-list superheroes, classic comic characters and a whole host of other family favourites. xtending any licensing agreement is always a big deal, but there are a number of stand-out characters and brands from the Warner Bros. back catalogue which are particularly suited to costume and fancy dress, making next year’s new launches especially exciting for Amscan. Billed as the ‘one-stop-partyshop’, Amscan is already one of the biggest and most important party companies in the world, offering a wide range of product for every party, celebration or event imaginable. “We have an unrivalled product portfolio,” revealed marketing executive Charlotte Terry. “It includes over 12,000 wholesale products across key 32

product areas of party, foil balloons, latex balloons and dressup. Of course, we also offer an extensive choice of licensed and themed product for all occasions and ages as an important part of that.” As an American company, Amscan has a significant global reach, with sales teams, warehouses, design and manufacturing facilities
located across the world. “That means we’re never far from our customers and can offer a fast, knowledgeable and localised service,” said Charlotte. “Our UK head office is based in Milton Keynes, where we also have a 500sq m party showroom. It’s the largest of its kind in Europe and it gives us the perfect opportunity to show customers our latest ranges first-hand.” Visiting that showroom makes it clear just what a key part licensing plays within Amscan’s business, across balloons and partyware as well as dress-up and accessories, as licensing director EMEA Mel Beer explains. “Licensing is extremely important to all pillars of our business – dress-up, foil and latex balloons and of course party goods,” she said. “We’re excited to be launching a number of new licensed balloon and party designs for 2020, including: 44 Cats, Minions, Peppa Pig, PJ Masks, DC Batman, Bayern Munich, Spongebob Squarepants and Smileyworld.” With an impressive licensing heritage, Amscan currently holds over 80 different licences across its product portfolio, with Mel tipping PAW Patrol, Peppa Pig, Frozen classic, Frozen II, SpiderMan and L.O.L Surprise to be among the big names leading the charge across EMEA.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
“Our designers have spent many months bringing to life a wealth of Warner Bros. characters. We used the time to explore a wide range of techniques to perfect a unique design for each of the costumes that were selected for the final range. As part of the development process, we worked closely with the team at Warner Bros. to ensure we achieved a product that was both wearable and authentic to the character. The end result is a range of fresh new products that offer fantastic value in terms of quality, design features and price. We are excited to be building the range throughout the year to offer our customers even more style options and greater character choice, something for every fan’s wardrobe!” Kate Springett, head of costume design, Amscan

Retailers should also look out for some key characters which will be making an appearance in brand new movies launching in 2020, including Harley Quinn Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 84.” The costumes feature a high level of detail with selected styles also including a wide range of accessories as part of the outfit. The collection itself includes styles for both children (ages ranging from three to four years up to 10 - 12 years) and adults (sizes 8 - 10 through to 16 - 18 for women and medium through to plus for men). Carnival 2020
Once the Christmas and New Year celebrations are over, party attentions turn to one of the biggest events in the European party calendar – the carnival season. PPE grabs a pair of maracas and takes to the streets to find out more.
O
ne of the biggest celebrations to take place across Europe, the carnival and Mardi Gras market continues to grow every year. Despite having no fixed date, it’s big business for party retailers, with elaborate costumes and extravagant décor, props and accessories making it a focal point for party-goers looking to get into the spirit of the anything-goes celebration. Street parties and over-the-top parades take place across a number of European cities in the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras – otherwise known as Fat Tuesday – the day before the Christian period of Lent. With its roots in religion, Mardi Gras is traditionally the last opportunity to indulge before a time of reflection, but as is often the case, these celebrations have changed and developed dramatically over the years. Carnival season is seen as the time when people let go of their inhibitions and just have fun. Key European locations such as Venice, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cologne, Nice and Cadiz transform to create an atmosphere of colour and fun, as of course do other major international Carnival locations, such as New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, among others. As far as party product goes, each location will often have its own, local feel, but there are a few things than can be counted on for any of the Carnival celebrations around the world; classic

eye masks, colourful costumes and group outfits will all take centre stage. As a Dutch company, Carnival is a major event for Boland Party on home turf and that interest is growing internationally, as UK agent Mark Brett explains. “In the UK I am finding more and more retailers are interested in the Carnival market,” he says. “There are many Carnivals in the UK – especially in the south west – yet as with other ‘costume’ occasions, the consumer is often turning to accessories. This trend is also becoming true in Europe. So while most Carnival parade attendees still wear, purchase and make very flamboyant, intricate and exciting costumes, it

“2020 is the year to shine! We have seen an increase in sales from non-carnival countries such as the Scandinavian countries and France/ Spain as well as the usual suspects such as Germany and Holland. Due to some styles selling out in just a few days last year we have been pushing retailers to pre-order to help us make sure we deliver the desired quantities. We have launched some great new products that stand out from the crowd and we have high expectations of these new specials. The silver and gold sequin jackets, the golden shiny OppoSuits and especially the amazing disco ball suit are all going to be popular for the 2020 season. Our recently launched newspaper and Vegas suits will also do well for Carnival – after all, why be at a party when you can be the party?” Michel Schrama, marketing manager, OppoSuits

is the onlookers in the crowd who are turning to accessories to join in the fun.” Mark also laments the unpredictablility of the Carnival market. “It is much like Halloween in that it is no longer possible to predict what will be popular,” he says. “It’s all down to the consumer at the last minute that determines what is popular. It can be a bit of a headache for us suppliers, but this the marketplace and it keeps us on our toes and stops complacency!” While typically considered to be an international event, it’s only in the last few years that the Carnival and Mardi Gras market has been taking hold in the UK. “With themed events now being held in a number of major towns and cities across the country, this colourful, fun celebration is now right here on our doorstep,” says Shayna Bowles, product and marketing manager for Creative Party. “The streets are filled with live music, street food, flashes of bright colours, masks and of course dancing! Nothing is too out there and everything goes.” Creative Party’s Masks of Mardi Gras partyware range captures the essence of the lively event, with a themed tableware range and accompanying décor including glittering foil door curtains, holographic streamers and confetti garland. “It’s everything needed to throw a perfectly themed Mardi Gras bash,” Shayna continues. Accessories and extras are crucial for big celebrations such as Carnival as they Right: This Brazilian dancer from Star Cutouts is ideal for setting the scene. Below: Pinata costumes from Folat lend a little colour to proceedings.
George also reveals that popular dress-up lines for Carnival include its wizard costumes, as well as colourful jesters, rainbow tutus, glittery hats and gold ringmaster jackets. This bright and bold theme runs through the Carnival market, with Dutch company Thetru seeing a surge of interest in its line of fantasy jackets, ranging from cupcake-themed designs to beautiful sparkly longline jackets. “As one of the leading suppliers of Carnival product on the continent, we have had a great year and are really looking to grow this business in the UK,” said Thetru’s sales and marketing manager for the UK, Jayne Richards. “We continue to build a stronger range of accessories to compliment our costumes, giving that perfect finish and offering fantastic quality at very competitive prices. We believe that customers want better quality at a fair price and Thetru’s quality means that our costumes offer longevity, something that is particularly of interest for hire shops in this throwaway age.” Carnival preparations should begin now – after all, it’s the perfect excuse to have a big, colourful party in what is otherwise a typically quiet time of year!
Group Effort
“We consistently find that colourful, coordinated group efforts are favourites when it comes to Carnival in the continent. Whatever happens next year, we will have to see what is the impact of future Brexit decisions for crossborder trading between UK and the UE. We have plenty of new and exciting product in our portfolio for 2020 – all will be revealed at Spielwarenmesse and Spring Fair!” Sergio Battaner, sales and marketing director, Palmer Agencies offer more reserved or costconscious consumers a way to get involved without necessarily going ‘all-in’. Low-cost items such as maracas, leis and feather boas are top sellers for Henbrandt, particularly the neon, glow and bright coloured ranges. “Customers selling the majority of these add-on lines tend to be internet sellers who have the facility to sell within Europe,” revealed Henbrandt’s George Morgan, “but our retail customers also do well with these goods during this period.”
Below: Carnival wouldn’t be Carnival without a selection of eyemasks to choose from – this butterfly is from Bristol Novelty.
The Bright and the Bold “The popularity of Carnival is evident in the millions of people that gather to celebrate the event annually and so our range also continues to grow in popularity, with new retailers stocking products each carnival season. In certain areas of Europe, such as Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, Carnival holds precedence over Halloween. Carnival has been celebrated in these parts for decades as a more traditionally celebrated festival and so retailers here continue to expand their carnival offerings to consumers, with demand at a constant level. The demand for bigger and better carnival collections from consumers spurs retailers to increase their carnival stocks, especially bespoke lines which
help them retain a certain level of exclusivity in the crowded market. Smiffys’ new lines for Carnival 2020 are bold, bright and better than ever with great designs to get the party started and bring the magic of carnival to life. The new Smiffys range incorporates his and hers dress-up with matching party jackets in snazzy prints, great for couples wanting to celebrate together. Politics and current affairs are popular themes for dress-up during Carnival season and with Brexit negotiations now delayed until 31 January 2020 our tongue-in-cheek political collection is also expected to do well!” Sharon Poulter, trade marketing manager, Smiffys

LOVE BOMB T he traditional celebration of love, lust and libido, Valentine’s Day has been something of an anomaly over the last few years, bucking the downward retail trend and steadily growing in size and reach each year. Last year saw the UK spending almost £1bn on food, gifts, cards, flowers, balloons and other Valentine’s Day essentials (according to GlobalData’s predicted 2019 figures) – a rise of 0.7% compared to 2018. Despite the squeeze on disposable incomes, the category has grown in value for the third year running, with retail sales alone reaching £853m – an impressive increase of 7.8% from 2018 – as many consumers say they don’t mind spending more to make Valentine’s Day special. The romantic date is the perfect opportunity for party and costume shops to showcase the power of balloons, décor and other heart-shaped product. “In terms of Valentine’s Day themed balloons, we anticipate designs featuring our matte Satin Luxe finish to be a popular choice, as well as those with an iridescent print,” offers Amscan’s marketing executive Charlotte Terry. “Ombre designs featuring a red and pink colour palette are also perfectly suited to the

occasion such as our red and pink ombre Orbz and ombre air-filled phrases.” It is also interesting to note the way the market is expanding, with Charlotte pointing out that existing everyday party trends such as unicorns, sloths and llamas are transferring across to the Valentine’s Day market, with new themed balloon additions to the collection. “These tie in with a number of ‘cute’ themes as well, making them suitable for children as well as couples,” said Charlotte. Amscan has added over 20 new balloon designs to its Valentine’s Day offering for 2020, with options ranging from classic ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ and ‘Love You’ messages to more contemporary options such as a rose gold ‘Cheers’ standard shape and colourful gold heart garland multi-balloons. Qualatex designs for the 2020 season. “There are a lot of ‘fun’ messages for Valentine’s Day,” said head of marketing Julie Dommett, “which are great for people who aren’t quite ready to say I Love You’ or for people gifting something to a friend, which is a trend that appears to be growing.” New releases from the company include stylised Bubble balloons, large microfoil shapes and a collection of co-ordinating latex balloons, with notable additions including the on-trend Adorable Sloth shape and the Love You Pastel Ombré and Hearts shape. “Combining balloons with gifts is a really simple way to make a gift look even more special,” added Julie. “This is especially true when personalising balloons for customers.” “Valentine’s Day is a big deal for the retail industry. Whether you’re married, in a couple or single, everyone gets involved with Valentine’s Day to celebrate love and it’s a key opportunity for retailers to seize and cash in. We’ve noticed that bold stand-out statement tableware and matching décor have been upward trending across social media, alongside the more traditional route of classic romantic motifs. The best way for retailers to make the most of Valentine’s Day is to carefully select their ranges, ensure their choices are on-trend and select products that can be easily carried through and can be easily merchandisable alongside other products.” Shayna Bowles, product and marketing manager, Creative Party

BAPIA
THE
BAPIA
ST BOO
John Bowler has been part of the party industry for more years than he cares to remember! John currently runs the Balloon And Party Industry Alliance (or BAPIA) and can be contacted on info@bapiaonline.com
A DECADE OF DEDICATION
As BAPIA approaches its tenth anniversary year and we hurtle towards the end of 2019, John Bowler takes a look back at what has been achieved over the past decade.
“
It has been a pleasure seeing our members grow and thrive over the years, and enjoying the benefits of their BAPIA membership. This in turn this has helped BAPIA to continually grow and increase its membership numbers year-on-year. We are proud of the fact that we continually improve our member benefits – our members' liability insurance cover has increased to £10 million and this covers a comprehensive range of services and products. We also include legal insurance and professional indemnity cover. We have always worked hard to support our supplier members and in return they have supported BAPIA and our members. It is thanks to them that we now have a number of fantastic discounts and offers from some of the UK’s leading balloon and party wholesalers. Promoting our members and what they offer to the public is also important and Jade Fraser of Massimo Media looks after our social media, ensuring that BAPIA has a strong online presence and that the public has a greater awareness of balloon and party professionals. In 2019 we also introduced our monthly Facebook photo competition for members which has proven very popular. With thanks to our supplier members we are able to offer three prizes each month, ensuring that every entry has a chance of winning. This works as a competition
but also allows us to see our members' creations – and Jade can then use the photographs as a promotional tool! We strongly believe that training is a necessity for the growth of any industry and will continue to support and promote the classes organised by our fantastic training providers, who are some of the best in the industry. Over the past decade BAPIA has invested in classes by fabulous international instructors such as Robbie Furman and Colin Stewart, taking them on tour around the UK and Ireland to ensure that as many people as possible had the opportunity to benefit from their inspiring classes. The 2019 tour was the best so far with all dates sold out, resulting in almost 300 delegates turning out to see the extremely popular and very talented Chris Adamo, who delivered fantastic classes and went to great lengths to ensure that he met and spoke to as many people as possible.
ABOVE LEFT: Australia's Chris Adamo toured the UK and Ireland with BAPIA earlier this year. ABOVE: BAPIA will be celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2020.
What Is BAPIA? The Balloon And Party Industry Alliance, or BAPIA as it’s more commonly known, is designed to work for the party industry to promote the benefits of using industry professionals and to bring significant benefits to our members. Request your copy of BAPIA’s quarterly newsletter at info@bapiaonline.com.
During Chris’s tour – and with some phenomenal support from our supplier members and the unending generosity of the delegates – we were able to raise £1,700 for Great Ormond Street Hospital, a charity that is very close to BAPIA's heart. For the past seven years BAPIA members have been decorating the GOSH children’s Christmas parties in December and this has become a highly sought after event, which is over-subscribed every year with many members applying to be part of it year after year. It is a wonderful opportunity to use our products and skills to put smiles on the faces of children who deserve it more than most, and once again this is only possible with the fantastic support of our supplier members and the enthusiasm of our retailer/decorator members. Our industry has seen some tough times recently, with environmental issues being a key issue. BAPIA responded to these by making a public statement about our position on balloon releases. We also became a member of the European Balloon and Party Council (EBPC) and funded a UK branch of the Pro Environment Balloon Alliance. It is truly important to us that we work hard to ensure the survival and growth of the balloon and party industry long into the future. I have really enjoyed everything about my role at BAPIA but mostly my favourite times are networking with members at different events. I would like to think that what BAPIA offers and has achieved benefits not just our members, but also the industry as a whole. I have to finish by sending out a message of great thanks to everybody who has supported BAPIA over the years, from the manufacturers, wholesalers and industry media (thanks Rob and Jacqui) who continually step up to support BAPIA and our members, to the industry trainers and balloon professional members who help us to grow and to support the industry in return. We would like to wish everybody a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous 2020.”
