elcome one and all to the Royal Lancaster London this afternoon for the 2024 Progressive Preschool Awards. Today is all about celebrating everything that is great about the vibrant preschool sector – the fantastic product ranges, across all categories, inspiring retail execution, innovative marketing and promotional activities and – perhaps most importantly – the companies and the people who make it all happen. We know that we couldn’t have brought the Progressive Preschool Awards to life without you. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the retail buyers who gave up their time to judge the vast amount of entries we received in our product categories, and also to our industry experts who came together to debate for our Validation Panels. Thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters – including Lisa Bryant and her team at Bump PR who so many of you have been engaging with on social media – and all who helped to create those little extra flourishes which truly make these awards so special… from your meet and greet at the door from some ‘Magic’ friends, the cute table centres and themed menus, the ‘higher or lower’ fun, plus the traditional PPSA goody bag which you will find on the back on your chair… we salute you all. Comedian, actor, Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and one of the best and most prolific joke writers in the country, Glenn Moore will be taking charge of proceedings at the Royal Lancaster London as host. Glenn’s 2022 Edinburgh Fringe show Will You Still Need Me, Will You Still Feed Me, Glenn I’m Sixty Moore sold out with rave five star reviews, while he is a regular face on TV, having appeared on Live at the Apollo, Mock The Week (BBC), The Russell Howard Hour (Sky), Guessable (Comedy Central), Rob Delaney’s Stand Up Central (Comedy Central) and The Stand Up Sketch Show (ITV2). Glenn can also be heard daily as one quarter of The Dave Berry Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio, the UK’s biggest commercial radio breakfast show. He also appears regularly on The News Quiz (Radio 4). The critically acclaimed stand-up show Glenn, Glenn, Glenn, How Do You Like It, How Do You Like It was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award. He also toured the UK with his follow up hit Edinburgh show Love Don’t Live Here Glenny Moore. He is a staff writer on the sketch comedy show Scrambled (CITV) and has written for The Mash Report (BBC), Play To The Whistle (ITV), and Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC).

ARRIVING AT THE WINNERS We take a look behind the scenes at the entry and judging process for the PPS Awards 2024.

he Progressive Preschool Awards (which are owned and organised by Max Publishing, owner of Progressive Preschool Magazine and PreschoolNews.net) recognise and reward excellence across the preschool spectrum – in product, retail execution and initiative, marketing promotions, wholesale/distribution and sustainability, as well as the Outstanding Achievement award for special individuals who have contributed greatly to the industry (with nominations sought by way of recommendation

based on individual achievement, knowledge and performance in the preschool sector). In addition, for the fourth year, there is a consumer award, What Parents Love, held in collaboration with The Insights Family and uncovering the most trusted brands based on fandom and advocacy by UK parents of children aged 1-3. The judging process for each of the categories differs in each case, duly tailored to arrive at the ﬁnalists and winners.

THE PRODUCT AWARDS This year’s prestigious Product categories were highly anticipated, with 10 finalists for each of the 12 categories, demonstrating the quality of entries received on the online awards portal throughout the preschool sector. “We’ve been blown away by both the quality and quantity of entries we received for the Progressive Preschool Awards again this year,” said Rob Willis, coo and joint owner of Max Publishing, which owns and organises the event. “We’re so grateful to the industry as a whole for getting behind these awards

again, from our entrants, to our judges, to our kind sponsors and everyone attending the ceremony.” The criteria for the Product categories remained the same as in previous years, with all entries required to be new to the market or significantly updated in the last calendar year (1 July 2023 to 1 July 2024), already in retail, with entries either being a single product or a range with up to five products. The online judging portal saw a bumper number of entries, which were then judged by key buyers from a wide spectrum of retailers.

THE RETAIL AWARDS

Retailers are at the forefront of the fast moving, ever changing preschool sector and they must be recognised at every level. Retailers were nominated from all over the UK in the months leading up to the judging. Following the online nominations, the ﬁve major retail categories (Supermarket, Multiple, Mixed, Department Store and Online) were judged by a retail validation panel comprised of experts from across the preschool industry. They were looking for commitment to the preschool product and retail sector, product selection, marketing, display, realising sales potential, retailing environment, customer care and supplier relations and online activity. Panel members included Charlotte Hyson, Paramount CP; Zara Grindrod, Rainbow Designs; Chris Lohmeyer, DKB Toys & Distribution; Brett Capon, BIBS; Simon Oliver, RKW (Chicco); Jeremy Minchin, Hippychick; Ashley Holman, ToyTopic; Samantha Bourne, Jazwares; Anne Bradford, Poetic Brands; Cat O’Brien, Hasbro; David Sprei, Penguin Ventures; and Christine Roberts, Misirli. The panel was chaired by Progressive Preschool’s publisher Rob Willis, with group editor Samantha Loveday and PPS commercial manager Jo Cassidy (each of whom do not vote). Meanwhile, the ﬁnalists in the independent retail categories (Nursery, Gift, Toy, Apparel and, new for this year, Retailer Newcomer) were reached from a mix of self nomination and industry nominations from suppliers, reps and agents. They were then judged by industry experts on the same criteria as the major retailers.

THE MARKETING AWARD The Marketing Award highlights the campaigns which have made an impressive impact upon the preschool product and retail sector over the past 12 months. This year’s finalists were arrived at by a group of marketing experts, chaired by Richard Pink, md of Pink Key Licensing. He was joined by Paul Godwin (PG Associates), Amber Steventon (Azaria PR), Adeline St John (The Media Snug), Rebecca Deeming-Mitchell (BTHA) and Jane PaviaDavies (Vista Public Relations). “The strong selection of entries this year gave the judges plenty to discuss,” Richard told Progressive Preschool. “The final outcome was by no means clear cut, but after discussion we were able to get to a selection of strong finalists and an overall winner worthy of the top prize.” Above left : The 2024 Retail Validation panel.
