It’s fair to say that the ever-changing face of UK retail has taken a bit of a battering recently. With Toys R Us entering administration in the same week that Mothercare announced it was in rescue talks with the banks, we could be forgiven for thinking that the toy and nursery retail Above: Some of the PPS Team: sector is in serious trouble at the moment. Sam Loveday, Jo Pilcher, Rob Willis, Looking behind the headlines reveals a very and Jacqui Parr. different story though. While there’s no doubt that the retail trade is facing serious difficulties, there are lessons that can be taken from these recent announcements and how changing consumer shopping habits are shaping the new retail landscape. When Toys R Us first announced it was entering administration, Simon Thomas, one of the joint administrators, pointed out that: “The newer, smaller, more interactive stores in the portfolio have been outperforming the older warehouse-style stores that were opened in the 1980s and 1990s.” The Toys R Us management team had wanted to close and downsize any underperforming stores for some time, but didn’t quite manage to move fast enough. These huge, out-of-town stores were hugely popular when they first launched – in a pre-internet time, when the only way to buy toys and car seats was to go to the shop and choose them. In those days, visiting the local Toys R Us was the highlight of a rainy 80s weekend! Meanwhile, Mothercare began dramatically reducing its store portfolio almost five years ago, as part of its ongoing turnaround plan. A bold move, but perhaps one which has saved it from going the same way as Toys R Us, as it recently revealed that 40% of its sales are now made via digital channels. The retail sector as a whole is continuing to face a number of pressures that are clearly having a profound impact – the issues it faces are not exclusive to the toy and nursery trade. The most important take-away from the news is just how important it is to continue to meet customers’ needs and adapt to evolving shopping habits. But it’s not all about focusing on your online business and making sure that your digital offering is up to scratch – consumers also want the personal touch; to feel as though they are buying something special and well-considered. It’s why smaller boutique stores are doing better than large out-of-town spaces and it’s why retailers need to know their customer profile inside and out. The seminar programme at Harrogate International Nursery Fair, taking place at the end of this month (see our full preview, starting on page 39), is one way to make sure you are at the top to your game in this respect. In addition to a number of other essential seminars and presentations, The Insights People will be outlining how parents’ shopping habits have shifted over the last 18 months as they have access to more information than ever before. Knowledge is power, after all! The show itself has undergone a PPS Awards To Open Soon dramatic makeover and will be taking Entry for the Progressive Preschool over three different halls of the Awards 2018 will open on Friday Harrogate Convention Centre – as 20 April. Right: Mothercare will continue to reduce its UK store estate, as over 40% of its sales are made digitally.

Mothercare In Rescue Talks With Lenders

N

ursery and maternity retailer Mothercare is in rescue talks with banks as shares in the group fell sharply, following a warning that profits would be lower than expected.

An official statement from the retailer addressed the recent media speculation about share prices, admitting it might have to breach its lending agreements and was seeking ‘additional sources of funding’ to support its ongoing transformation plan. The statement said the company – which issued a profit warning in January – was in talks to raise the funds needed for a turnaround programme

that involves the closure of almost half of its UK stores (from 140 to 80) as sales move online. ‘We are working with our financing partners with respect to our financing needs for the 2019 financial year and beyond. We forecast our borrowings to increase towards the limit of our facilities ... and will therefore require waivers of certain financial covenants.’ “The retail sector continues to face

a number of pressures that are clearly having a profound impact on the sector as a whole,” said chief executive officer Mark Newton-Jones. “We are performing in line with our expectations and remain a cash generative business, but we also need to push ahead with our transformation strategy to meet our customers’ needs and continue adapting to evolving shopping habits around the world.” Mothercare’s shares reached an all time low of 18p following the news. With its shares in freefall the company, which has an £80m hole in its pension pot, is currently worth just £37m.

Alpha Animation To Headline Sponsor PPS Awards 2018 The Progressive Preschool Awards 2018 take place on Thursday 8 November at The Dorchester Hotel in London’s Mayfair. preschool product and retail – the awards are a perfect fit for our key preschool brand Super Wings.” “It’s hugely exciting to have such a fast-growing, much talked about brand taking the mantle as Headline Sponsor,” adds event organiser and PPS publishing director Rob Willis. “They truly reflect what the awards stand for – creativity, dynamism, and getting brilliant product to retail.” Other sponsors of the PPS Awards 2018 include: Centum Books, Cooneen,

Toys R Us Begins Closing Down Process

A

s PPS went to press (March 9), stricken toy retailer Toys R Us (and Babies R Us) was trading in administration, following the appointment of Moorfields Advisory on Tuesday 27 February as the administrator of the beleaguered retail group. As the UK’s biggest toy retailer, the move put 3,000 UK jobs at risk, although the administrator – Moorfields Advisory – said at the time that all 105 stores were to remain open until further notice. Since then, it has said that an ‘orderly wind-down of the

company’s store portfolio’ will be taking place over the coming weeks, with a 25% off nationwide closing down sale currently taking place across all stores. Moorfields partner Simon Thomas said that every effort will be made to secure a buyer for all or part of the business, which faced a £15million tax bill and narrowly managed to avoid going into administration in December last year. “The newer, smaller, more interactive stores in the portfolio have been outperforming the older warehousestyle stores,” said Simon. “While this

Bugaboo Acquired By Bain Capital

Iconic Dutch stroller brand Bugaboo has been aquired by investment group Bain Capital Private Equity and will be entering the next phase of its growth strategy under its new owner. Premium brand Bugaboo turns over approximately €160m a year, with 1,300 employees working in over 50 countries worldwide. Financial terms have not been disclosed but the takeover sum is likely to be around €200m; the sum discussed when the company was initially put up for sale last October. An ongoing disagreement between the company’s founders – ceo Eduard Zanen and designer Max Barenbrug – about Bugaboo’s future forced a sale. Under the new ownership structure both founders will retain their current positions, while most of the management team will continue in their jobs. Egmont Research Reveals Preschool Reading Decline

Children’s publisher Egmont has revealed that there has been a steep decline in the number of preschoolers being read to on a daily basis, with the number dropping by one fifth since the survey began in 2013. The popular kids’ book publisher revealed the results of its latest research study, Reading Magic, which looked at how reading fits into family life. The research also revealed that one in five parents feel uncomfortable in bookshops, with almost half overwhelmed by the choice of children’s books. “This steep decline in preschoolers reading and being read to signals a significant threat to child development, with potential long-term social impact,” said a spokesperson. “We need to change the culture of reading and look at why parents aren’t reading to their children.”

The popular Toymaster May Show will once again be taking place at The Majestic Hotel in Harrogate from 15 – 17 May 2018, and the event has already sold out, confirmed the organisation. Over 100 suppliers will be present, with the majority of them running special offers for the independent bricks and mortar toy retailers who attend. A statement from Toymaster md Ian Edmunds read; “All space has been filled and Toymaster would like to take this opportunity to thank those attending for their support and we look forward to seeing you in May.”

UK Consumers Splash Out On Newborns

U

K consumers are a generous bunch when it comes to new baby gifting, with the latest research showing that they spend, on average, a total of £179.74 on gifts for friends or family members’ new babies, all before their first birthday. The research, carried out by the Post Office gift card One4all, spoke to 1,000 UK adults who revealed that of that total, an average of £77.51 is spent before the baby is even born. A

further £102.23 spent once the baby has arrived. Some 37% of the respondents aged between 18-24 have bought baby shower gifts, compared to just 6% of those aged 55 or over, suggesting baby showers are much more popular among millennials. “It’s wonderful to see how the news of a new baby is being celebrated, from the pregnancy announcement right through to the birth and beyond, with the

likes of gender reveals and naming ceremonies now proving popular gifting occasions,” said Aoife Davey, group marketing manager. Above: Following christenings and other religious ceremonies, baby showers topped the list as the most popular new baby gifting occasion.

Parragon Books Announces Potential Closure

Family-run nursery retailer Winstanleys Pramworld has opened a second high street store, based in Stoke-On-Trent, after more than 60 years in business. The second store – based on Leek Road Retail Park in Hanley – will aim to provide the same ‘very best customer experience from start to finish, at the very best price’, that the Wigan store, which first opened in 1957, already prides itself upon. “As one of the UK’s largest independent online retailers we are able to offer online prices in-store, representing tremendous value for money,” said director David Winstanley. “The business was started by my grandfather in the 50s and now in 2018 the company is run by my dad and I – a true family business with family values.”

River Island Opens First UK Kids’ Store

High street fashion chain River Island has launched its first UK standalone kidswear store with a campaign which celebrates diversity and marks the retailer’s 30th anniversary. The first ever River Island Kids branch opened in early February at Intu Braehead near Glasgow. The new shop will sell River Island’s Kids and Mini collections for children from newborn upwards. Meanwhile, six children with disabilities have been unveiled as the models for River Island’s latest fashion campaign. The children – aged from three upwards – model the latest designs from the River Island Kids Clothing range in the adverts, which celebrate diversity and mark the high street chain’s 30th anniversary.

Parragon Books is to enter into consultation about the potential closure of the business. A statement from DC Thomson said that the Bath-based company – which has a number of licences and preschool titles in its portfolio – has been underperforming for a number of years due to difficult market conditions and severe pressure on margins. In the UK, the business will enter a 45-day collective consultation process. In other territories, the company will follow the respective processes. The proposal means up to 245 jobs are at risk of redundancy globally. “While we are still open to offers and expressions of interest for the business, DC Thomson is unable to run this process indefinitely,” said David Thomson, director of DC Thomson. “Therefore, the company has made the decision to enter into a consultation process. This decision has not been entered into lightly and, as owners of the business for more than a decade, we are very disappointed to be making this announcement today.”

iCandy Launches Debut TV Advert

Fashion-forward pushchair company iCandy’s has launched it first ever television commercial, which aired on UK television throughout February, highlighting the broadening appeal of the brand as the company continues to focus on marketing its product across the marketplace. The commercial will show on Sky channels from 1 – 28 February, 2018, using the Adsmart system to ensure that the advert targets Sky subscribers who are expecting a baby, creating a highly-focused marketing campaign. “This is another example of how iCandy utilise the latest technology to revolutionise how they market their pushchairs,” said a spokesperson for the company. Below: The ad focused on the brand new Raspberry, part of the muchanticipated 2018 collection.

Aldi Launches Nursery Muddy Puddles Opens Furniture Range First Retail Store Aldi’s popular Baby and Toddler event saw the bargain retailer launching a new nursery furniture range last month. The Aldi Mamia furniture set – which included a wardrobe, a changing unit and a cot bed – costs less than £350 in total and was compared to the Silver Cross Nostalgia Complete Room set in the national press. “Aldi is committed to helping parents save as much money as possible,” says Julie Ashfield, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi.

Award-winning children’s outdoor clothing brand Muddy Puddles launched its first ever retail outlet with a new pop-up store in luxury shopping destination, Bicester Village. Inspired by alpine adventures and forest schooling, the alpine hut-themed pop-up shop will be the perfect setting to showcase Muddy Puddles’ award-winning ski-wear range. The store also featured Muddy Puddles’ trusted outerwear essentials including award-winning jackets, all-in-ones and wellies and shoppers will be able to take advantage of exclusive promotions.

DHX Brands Introduces PEOPLE NEWS First Steppers ▶ U K nursery distributor Potwells The new First Steppers phrase and consumer demographic is an expertendorsed sub-category that highlights the younger end of the preschool sector. Created by DHX Brands to provide a clearer definition of the six months to 2½ years age range, the initiative will offer guidance and unlock fresh opportunities for licensees, retailers and consumers. The company’s Teletubbies, In the Night Garden and Twirlywoos brands are all aimed at this age group. Research reinforced DHX Brands’ belief that there is a bigger retail opportunity at the younger end of the preschool market and that parents can become confused by the age-appropriateness of certain products, often leading to fewer purchases. “The ‘First Steppers’ initiative represents a child’s first meaningful relationship with character brands and our aim is to provide better clarity of this very specific core demographic for licensees, retailers and consumers,” said Peter Byrne, evp at DHX Brands. “There is a clear opportunity to create a more targeted offering for this audience and genuinely help make parents’ lives easier.”

Trading has expanded its team, welcoming nursery stalwart Jane Johnstone to the ‘Potwells Family’ as part of a focus on business development.

▶ Halilit has appointed Evie Johnson as sales account manager as it prepares for a period of significant growth, having introduced a number of new ranges to the portfolio. ▶ K ieran Elsby has been appointed global B2C marketing manager for Hape Toys and will oversee global plans for the leading toy brand. ▶ G ames and puzzles specialist Jumbo has strengthened its team, welcoming Mark Holland as national account manager and Bryce Vernon to the marketing team. ▶ BabyStyle and egg stroller are delighted to welcome Katie Grech-Cini to the team as egg brand executive.

MEDI A WATCH

IN THE

Public Eye

In Media Watch, Progressive Preschool takes a look at the preschool products featuring in the consumer press and social media to find out what will be in demand at retail over the coming months.

Cozy ’N‘ Safe Merlin £299.99 halfords.com

Winner

WE SAY: Stylish, practical and good value. This is suitable from birth to four years, and can be used in both rear-facing and forward-facing modes. The mechanism to rotate the seat is a doddle to operate, even with a child in your arms. We love the comfy seat padding – car seats don’t get much plusher than this – and our testers like the deep recline. SIAN (6W): I really love the colour and design of this seat – it’s had a lot of compliments! It’s a bit fiddly and heavy to install, but once it’s in place it’s very easy to adjust. The rotating feature is easy to operate one-handed, and makes getting Felicity in and out of the car so much easier. The price is very reasonable, given the ease of use and comfort this provides. ★★★★★

ABI (18M): A good value seat, which looks fantastic. It’s undoubtedly a solid piece of kit, albeit a little cumbersome to install – not ideal for moving between cars. The Isofix arms are a little tricky to get into place, and the instructions aren’t clear. But it’s intuitive to use, especially the rotate and recline functions. The fabric and padding are substantial and the strap lengths adjust with ease. Callum seems very comfortable. ★★★★★

CHRISTINA (30M): Fiddly to install, but it’s very secure and stable once in place. It looks really smart and is excellent value for money. It’s very well padded, more so than other seats we’ve tried. Max was definitely comfortable; he fell asleep almost instantly on our first trip. The belt buckle is bit fiddly, especially with Max fighting against it, but he couldn’t wriggle his arms out once strapped in – result! ★★★★★

WE SAY: This is an i-Size car seat, which rotates 360° and is suitable for rear-facing travel from birth to approximately two years (87cm) or for forward-facing travel up to around four years. Our testers all found this seat really easy to install and adjust. We really like the cushioned inlay, which offers that little bit of extra support for newborns. This seat is available in a range of colours. SIAN (6W): This is so easy to install. I like that Felicity has extra leg room without compromising her safety, and I love that you can lock the seat but it’s still easy to change between the rearward-facing and forward racing positions. The straps are really easy to use and adjust. It’s easy to recline, but we couldn’t use this feature due to the angle of the seats in my car. ★★★★★

ABI (18M): A smart-looking, comfortable seat that’s easy to fit. A particular highlight is the ability to fit it without a support leg, which creates more space for shopping or for Callum’s brother to climb across to his seat. The buttons are in logical positions, and diagrams on the side of the seat guide you through the various functions. It rotates easily but I think it could do with a slightly deeper recline. ★★★★★

1 1 0 | Ma r ch 2 0 1 8 | m o t h e r a n d b a b y . c o . u k

CHRISTINA (2.5Y): Definitely my favourite seat. It looks fab, is much lighter than the others and is very comfortable. It’s easy to install and rotate, and you can adjust the straps with one hand while negotiating with a stroppy two-year-old! It looks secure, stable and well padded, and Max definitely finds it comfortable. He hasn’t managed to wriggle his arms out, and the recline feature is great. ★★★★★

Best Seat In The House The March issue of Mother & Baby magazine turned the attentions of its ever-popular Big Test to swivel car seats, with the Cosy ‘n’ Safe Merlin scoring an incredible 14 out of 15 and taking the top spot in the feature. The testers described it as ‘a good value seat, which looks fantastic’, with an overall verdict of ‘stylish, practical and good value’.

Best Brush Forward The February issue of Mother & Baby magazine featured a ‘six of the best’ product showcase looking at the cleverest ways of keeping those little teeth as healthy as possible. Teether and toothbrush Matchstick Monkey made it to the number two spot thanks to its dual function and clever easy-grip design.

MAR 2018

Baby’s First A feature in the March issue of Gurgle magazine looks at a newborn’s wardrobe essentials, taking prospective parents through the differences between vest, sleepsuits, romper suits. The all-inone sleepsuit is illustrated with Kite Clothing’s Panda design – it comes with a zip instead of poppers, making it less fiddly and perfect for night-time changes!

Keep It Clean Bibetta’s newborn bib was featured in the March issue of Gurgle on the ‘Baby’s First Wardrobe’ fashion pages. The luxury newborn bib is super soft for baby’s skin, but also waterproof to protect from wetness. Made from a super-soft fabric, it is an ideal solution for feeding young babies without overwhelming them with bibs designed for older children.

I N DU ST RY I N S I G H TS

As one of the world’s largest market research companies, GfK offers retailers and supplier valuable insight into the way people live, think and shop. Here, business group director Anthony Williams takes a look at how the car seat market has been driving business throughout the nursery trade over recent months.

CAR SEATS DRIVING VALUE

L

ast year proved to be a challenging year for nursery and baby durable products in the UK. Prices started to polarise and increasing consumer thriftiness resulted in a shift towards parents looking for other routes to buy their pushchairs and car seats. There appears to be a recent upswing in second-hand resellers and a distinct move towards online purchases, which some retailers are finding challenging. Although online is a common area across all consumer products, the reseller market is less broadly defined. Nursery categories are more likely to be affected by the drive for greater affordability and the perception of more readily getting a bargain in buying second hand or

re-conditioned items. Overall, volume fell faster in baby care with a 13% year-on-year decline in 2017. The performance of higher value products in safety and transportation helped the market avoid a similar double-digit value decline and sales fell 3% to £926m*. In safety, it was primarily health that contributed most significantly, with products like thermometers growing by 7%. For baby monitors, despite growth at premium price points and the successful evolution of smart technology boosting upper price brackets, total value declined over the year. Analogue, digital audio and video monitors all saw volumes reduce even as average prices saw a robust 7% increase to over £60**. Transportation areas like pushchairs, strollers, car seats and accessories all saw volumes dip, with demand for the sector dropping by 6%. Thanks to bigger ticket items and a move towards consumers trading up, value stayed positive, rising by around 1% and making the market worth nearly £330m. Car seats have experienced an intriguingly dynamic journey over Left: Maxi-Cosi’s new Rock complies with the latest i-Size (R129) car seat legislation.

Inset: The Joie Spin 360 is a combination isofix car seat.

the last year with routes to market evolving quite quickly. Mother and child specialist retailers continue to take the largest chunk of this category worth nearly £180m at retail, a 4% uplift against 2016. Unsurprisingly, sales of isofix seats are increasing strongly, accounting for over 41% of sales. This has been a contributing factor in value development with average selling prices double those of non-isofix products at £160. Polarisation is very evident in car seats as the sub-£60 category grew by 8% and those selling for more than £100 by 3%, while the mid-market has been squeezed rising by just 1%. Over the last twelve months the growth in share for mass merchandisers, made up of supermarkets and variety stores, has been significant with a quarter of all car seats now being purchased from these types of stores compared to a fifth just over a year ago. Going into 2018, household spend is likely to be still constrained and the risk from the secondary marketplace is very real. However, parents unsurprisingly still consider safety as one of the principal nursery equipment sectors they would gladly spend money on. As such, we would expect both volume and value to improve in retail terms over the course of the year.” Source: GfK Point of Sales Tracking | Baby Care & Nursery *Total Category reporting **Panelmarket reporting | Value | January December 2017

ccording to Kathy HirshPasek [1], an award-winning professor of psychology at Temple University, ‘A toy should be 10% toy and 90% child.’ This is one of the benefits of traditional toys such as teddy bears, balls and building blocks; children (and the parents playing with them) are given very little to go on, so rely on imagination and communication to bring the toy to life. As a result, these traditional or classic toys can be particularly good for encouraging language development. A study published a couple of years ago by Dr. Anna Sosa (Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Northern Arizona University) found that when children and adults played with traditional toys, the adult spoke an average of 56 words per minute – just 11 words fewer than if they were reading a book together [2]. This suggests that traditional play

can be almost as good as reading at exposing children to language. For instance, research shows that children who play with educational toys featuring shapes, colours, numbers and letters may be better at understanding speech [3]. This might be because it gives the adult something to talk about – they can name the circle and the square, the straight sides, the corners and so on. This isn’t just a lesson in maths; it’s an opportunity for children to experience a wide range of vocabulary. Many studies also suggest that playing make-believe with other children (e.g. using a play kitchen) is an excellent way for children to develop language skills [4]. When children are chatting away, they are actively practising using their speaking and listening skills. They are using all the words they have learned so far; stringing them together into a sentence while also building their own vocabulary.

Children don’t have to be playing with others to strengthen their language skills either. When little ones are playing make-believe alone, they tend to talk aloud to themselves – a sort of narration of the story they are acting out, known as private speech. It helps children keep track of their game, but it also means they are rehearsing their language skills. Retailers who allow children to play with toys instore will know that this happens with any creative activity when the child is truly engaged. It’s a great way for parents to see what their child enjoys and is likely to benefit from! Traditional toys are a great way to give children that 10% that Kathy Hirsh-Pasek describes, and provide lots of opportunities for little learners to experience language through play.” Left: Classic role-play helps children expand their vocabulary. during the day. Below: Children love traditional toys like teddy bears, which allow them unrestricted creative play.

“FEEDBACK”

You Wear It Well The licensed preschool apparel sector is certainly a buoyant one – with properties including Peppa Pig, Thomas, PAW Patrol and Winnie the Pooh leading the way. And, with the likes of Hey Duggee, PJ Masks, Nella the Princess Knight and Super Wings among others beginning to make their mark, it’s more crowded than ever. PPS chats to some of the key licensees in the space to find out how 2017 was and how 2018 is shaping up. Sion Aykroyd sales and licensing executive, Aykroyd & Sons 2017 was very active. “ Preschool was a core age

category for us especially on kids’ nightwear. We saw a lot of interest in the established licences such as PAW Patrol, My Little Pony, Beauty and the Beast, etc, while it was refreshing to see new licences such as PJ Masks, Hey Duggee and Bing Bunny breakthrough. 2018 has been very positive and encouraging [so far]. We’re looking forward to the launch of the Peter Rabbit movie in March. January and February are always the slower months of the calendar for sales, but extremely busy on development for a/w18. There’s a good balance of preschool licences on offer at the moment. As for improvement, there might be space for a new girls licence to take over the market? We would like to continue to build on a strong portfolio of preschool licences so we can look forward to 2019/20 and beyond.

Above: Aykroyd’s Sion believes there is a good balance of preschool licences on offer at the moment.

Left and next page: Dinosaur Roar and Mickey Mouse are among the brands in the Fashion UK portfolio.

Dean Greasley director of licensing, TDP Textiles We ended 2017 with “ our best year to date and,

as always, preschool was extremely important to us, with by far the leading light in the sector being Nickelodeon’s PAW Patrol. At the end of the year PJ Masks made an excellent entry into the market, too. However, in any year following a hugely successful property, everyone looks for ‘what’s next’. For 2018 my feeling is that although PAW Patrol is still a major priority and PJ Masks looks excellent, we’ll need to be working hard across a greater number licences to give us the growth we’re forecasting. Our latest addition is Super Wings, which we’ll be launching imminently and looks very promising. Add in to this, the excellent Hey Duggee from the BBC which is going from strength to strength. It’s also great to see the Disney preschool offering is looking stronger for the coming years, all adding up to a busy 2018 I’m sure. Above: TDP has recently added Super Wings to its portfolio, says Dean.

2017 was a tough year overall, with Brexit turmoil and retailers holding back/trying to shift stocks. 2018 is looking more promising – retailers appear to be more confident in their A/W opportunities. Our category is always slower in spring/summer, but the teams are working closely and development for autumn/winter garments is in full swing. Socks will follow in a couple of months due to shorter lead times which means we can be more reactive on the back of nightwear/underwear orders to tie back and provide a one-stop-shop to retail.

Peppa Pig remains in top position for us on nightwear/ underwear, while on socks, Disney/Marvel/Star Wars remains strong, alongside My Little Pony. We are expecting Nella the Princess Knight and Rusty Rivets to perform really well and are extremely excited for the launch of Moon and Me. We also launched our babywear collection in the second half of 2017 following an opportunity with Disney to refresh the look. We had our first orders on Winnie the Pooh gift set go into retail this January and we are aiming to build this business.

Above left: Misirli’s Faye says retailers appear more confident in their 2018 a/w opportunities.

Ashley Hammond head of sales, Fashion UK Fashion UK “ is in a state of

rapid expansion in this area; 2017 has been an exceptionally good year for us. We have seen strong sales coming from our preschool licence portfolio and are actively looking to keep it up. 2018 has begun with continued strong growth across our evergreen preschool properties, such as Disney. Our top performing licences currently consist of the classics – Mr Men, Warner Bros and Disney. However, there are always new and exciting brands popping up in this sector that may bring new and exciting opportunities. The health of the preschool apparel sector could not be better. It is a booming market that can perform exceptionally well if you have the right licence or product. It could be improved even further by expanding what is on offer at the moment, so we are keeping an eye out for something that can diversify the market and offer the consumer more choice. By the end of 2018, we would like to strengthen our preschool licensed portfolio even further in the UK and to have made our first robust steps into Europe with preschool apparel.

Above: The health of the preschool apparel sector could not be better, says Fashion UK’s Ashley.

Mike Coles director, Cooneen 2017 was another good year for “ preschool for Cooneen. 2018 is a similar level

to 2017 – sales on all of our products have been excellent to the end of 2017, so this has helped give Cooneen an excellent start to 2018. The usual stable of Peppa Pig, Thomas and Disney all dominate this sector, while we also have high hopes for Nella the Princess Knight, Rusty Rivets and Moon and Me. Preschool is crowded, so ensuring we have the top licences is crucial. We are confident we have the lion’s share for 2018. I believe the sector is very buoyant and quite exciting for the next few years. More space should be given to this growing area. Above: Cooneen’s Mike believes more space should be given to the growing sector.

NEED TO KNOW: INDIE TOY & GIFT

PLAY TIME

The team behind The Independent Toy & Gift Show is confident that 2018 will deliver the best show yet, with a number of first-time exhibitors, a plush theme, special show offers and a major contribution from the preschool category. PPS finds out more.

F

or independent toy retailers, the Independent Toy & Gift Show is a staple of the industry calendar. Each year, the event – which is held at Cranmore Park in Solihull – continues to gather momentum with visitors and exhibitors alike. In 2017, it had the support of the top 20 suppliers, with buyers getting the chance to check out 93 stands. Carrying a STEM theme, there were vibrant displays from LEGO, Magformers, K’Nex, Learning Resources, Brainstorm and Playmobil, while Hasbro turned the café into a Transformers-themed feast. The 2018 event – which takes place from Tuesday 1 – Wednesday 2 May – is shaping up to be just as eventful, with the preschool category a key part, as Miles Penhallow, head of toys and children’s gifts, explains. “We are delighted to welcome Pretend to Bee, Little Bird Told Me, Alpha Animation and Toys, JML, Carte Blanche Group and Jumini for the first time,” says Miles. “We are also welcoming back The Puppet Company, Papo, DKL and Aurora World. The preschool category is the largest of the nine reported Supercategories for our member’s stores and, hence, it will be very well represented by our 2018

exhibitors. In fact, there will be very few stands that will not have something for children under the age of five.” Miles’ preschool highlights include the new Wilberry plush range from The Puppet Company, the wedding range from Playmobil, as well as a raft of new lines from VTech among others. Across the show floor, Miles explains that the show has refined its ‘single product show offers’, which are available to all visiting buyers. These will be known as ‘One Hit Wonders’, details of which will be given to visitors on arrival, and will be available on a first come, first served basis. Miles continues: “This year’s theme will be plush with a TY Beanie Boo café and a costume appearance by Rufus

We will also be giving all visitors a goody bag on their departure.” Miles is confident that visitors to the show will not be disappointed and the team is planning for the best show ever, with even more attendees and buyers. He concludes: “This show is aimed at independent buyers and, while other national shows in the UK are losing key exhibitors, this event continues to receive their valued support. Having established its credentials over the course of several years, the show’s dates have become an important entry in the diaries of independent buyers who are serious about toy retailing.” If it’s not already in your diaries, we suggest that you start planning your trip to Solihull now.

TA LKI N G TO : OB A BY Left: Obaby’s best-selling Stamford furniture range includes cots, cot beds, changing units and wardrobes. Below: Grant Koston, operations manager.

Product Power The last 15 years have seen Obaby explode onto the UK nursery scene, bringing some of the most popular and best-loved products to the market. The award-winning company is now one of the most sought-after brands in the industry, and operations manager Grant Koston spoke to PPS about its plans for the future.

“W

e believe parents want choice,” says Grant, outling what he believes is important to consumers in 2018. “Each family has its own individual needs, so we make sure we have a wide variety of products that can be put together to make the perfect set for them.” Obaby’s first tentative steps into the highly competitive baby and nursery industry came when the then-wholesaler launched the first generation of Atlas buggies into a select few retailers. This initial foray into the nursery world was a success, and as the stroller became more established, so too did Obaby’s reputation as a nursery name in its own right. Soon enough, more retailers began approaching the company and it was with this backing and support that Obaby has been able to grow into the established, awardwinning nursery brand that we know today, selling everything from nursery furniture to pushchairs and highchairs to travel cots. “The key for us is to offer customers quality products at affordable prices,” Grant explains. “We also offer a fiveyear guarantee with our products to

give our customers peace of mind that our products will be suitable for the whole duration of the little one needing it. And beyond!” Being able to communicate Obaby’s new launches, special offers and other consumer-focused benefits relies on the company having a good relationship with retailers. “We have made concerted efforts this year to work even closer with our independent retailers,” agrees Grant. “It’s so

important. We are excited to introduce our new warm grey colour to our furniture ranges this year and this will be exclusive to the independent trade.” In order to keep on top of those retail relationships, Obaby has welcomed business development manager, Karl Hughes, back to the business. “He is already proving to be an invaluable team member alongside Michaela Altman, our other fantastic business development manager,” says Grant, as he outlines the company’s plans for the coming months. “Our immediate goal is to give customers plenty of opportunity to view our products, so we are delighted to be exhibiting at a number of shows throughout the year. We are also working with retailers to give our products enough exposure to meet the demand our customers expect.” Offering new product is essential to keep any business relevant within its market and Obaby is no different. The hugely popular Stamford furniture range will continue to grow in 2018 with a range which now includes everything from a space saver cot to a toy box and cot top changer. The brand new Belton range will also be introduced to the market later this year as will new designs for the popular Grace Inspire cot beds. “Our Stamford range has won various awards over the past 12 months,” adds Darren. And we are sure the new Belton range will follow in its successful footsteps!” Left: The Belton cot bed is new for 2018. Below: Disney’s Winnie-the-Pooh is a popular choice for nursery furniture.

Baby Brands Licensing plays a large part in Obaby’s offering. The company recently reintroduced Tiny Tatty Teddy cot beds into its licensed range and has a wide range of Disney furniture, wheeled goods, highchairs, travel cots and accessories. “Having these licenses gives parents the option to have some of their favourite characters on some of our best loved products,” says Grant. “It’s a win-win situation!”

All Hail HARROGATE!

Each March, the beautiful market town of Harrogate is taken over by the nursery trade as suppliers, wholesalers and retailers make the most of the three-day Harrogate International Nursery Fair. Here’s PPS’ preview of what you can expect to find at the UK’s only nursery trade show.

T

here’s always plenty to keep visitors busy at the Harrogate International Nursery Fair and this year’s show, taking place from 25 – 27 March, will be no different. While still offering an unrivalled opportunity for manufacturers and suppliers of baby products to meet

We look forward to seeing as many of our customers as possible! key industry buyers, the exhibition will also be trialling a completely new look, taking over three different halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre. “Having fewer entrances will concentrate the visitor flow in a more structured way,” explained show organiser Adrian Sneyd. “We’re excited to see what everyone makes of the new layout and look forward to showcasing some of the very best baby products that the industry has to offer.” Also new for the 2018 show is the New Product Showcase, which will serve as the first port of call for retailers and buyers looking to uncover the latest new product launches and is ideal for companies launching brand new items and ranges. The winners of the BANTA and Concept & Above: The Mima Xari limited edition yellow with parasol, from Cheeky Rascals.

The presentations will cover various subjects, from the new GDPR regulations (3Volution) to the latest baby product trends (GfK) and parents’ shopping habits (The Insights People). But the main draw is – as ever – the exhibitors and new products themselves. “We are delighted to have a number of major brands returning to the 2018 show in March,” says Adrian. “Joie, Nuna and Red Kite will be joining a long list of wellloved brands such as BabyStyle, Bebecar, Cheeky Rascals, Hauck, Obaby, Peg Perego and Venicci to name just a few.” British brand Cosatto will be returning to Harrogate International Nursery Fair  PROGRES SIVE PRESCHOOL

Key Show “Dolce Toys, Kidsme and BBGG will be launching many news ranges at the Harrogate Nursery show in 2018. We see Harrogate as a key show in our diary and it helps us continue to focus on the independent nursery market which we always support with exclusives and discounts. We’ve three amazing brands to offer the independent market all with many new products for 2018.” Ian Green, sales director, iGSM Right: The BabyStyle Oyster Zero in Ink Black.  2018 after a 15-year break.

The company, which is on a mission to ‘save the world from boring baby stuff’, will be showcasing its vibrant colours, unique patterns and quirky design. “I think it is probably 35 years since the very first time we had a stand at Harrogate,” says managing director Andrew Kluge. “It’s good to be back!” The company is thrilled to be showcasing a whole host of the vibrant patterns and quirky designs it is best known for. “We’ve got newness galore with a new collection of car seats, plus a preview of a very special edition, which we are sure will be ‘Royally’ loved,” Andrew continues. Having not attended HINF since 2003, Cosatto has heaps of new products and will be showing as much as it can. Three brand new, hot-off-the-press car seats will be on show, as will the new ultra-

urban lightweight pushchair Woosh, which has sold out over and over. “We will also be shouting about our brand new, first-of-its-kind The Happy Baby Guarantee,” adds Andrew. “We can’t wait to be at the show and for everyone to come and experience the happiness and great products we have on offer!” Also returning to Harrogate, although not after a break, is long-time exhibitor Bebecar UK. “Harrogate gives us the opportunity to showcase our whole collection in one place,” says commercial director Kevin Golding. This year the company will be launching the Natura collection – these pushchairs need to seen in the flesh to be properly appreciated, as they have a unique ultra-realistic wood finish on the chassis. “We always offer light refreshments on our stand,” adds Kevin, “and the show is a great opportunity to reconnect with our customers, and to see their reactions to the brand new fabrics and chassis.” BabyStyle is another one of HINF’s most established exhibitors, and will be returning with a stand packed full of examples from its current range as well as some exciting new products and a number of very tempting show deals which are only available to visiting retailers. On show for the first time will be the all-new Oyster 3. “ Going by the comments we have already had from retailers and consumers, the Oyster 3 is set to become another best-selling BabyStyle icon very quickly,” says managing director Andy Crane. Making its trade show debut within the egg section of the stand will be The Quail, which launched in December 2017, along with new editions of the original egg. Two new colourways for the Oyster Zero, a new colour for the Hollie furniture range and the Oyster Carapace car seats will also be on display, as will the multiaward winning Hybrid and the Rockit. The Red Kite Baby Co will be exhibiting at Harrogate Nursery Show, and national account manager Nick Tucker is looking forward to meeting all everyone there. “As usual,

we will be showing off some new lines from the 2018 range along with a selection of existing ones,” he says. “This year is no different to previous years for Red Kite; we will continue to produce and supply a range which fits into our ethos as a company – great product at a great value. Our product development team have worked hard all year to ensure we stay on, if not ahead of, all market trends.” As a family-run business, Peg Perego is proud to show its continued support to

Meeting The Market “We only launched last summer, but our cutlery is already multiaward winning. This is our first UK trade show and we’re really looking forward to meeting more buyers from around the country as well as other people in the industry. We are still very much in the process of introducing our cutlery to the market and will be showcasing our new colours at Harrogate. As soon as you pick up our knife and fork set, you understand exactly how it supports children in becoming confident and independent at mealtimes. We can’t wait to get it – and samples of our upcoming products – into the buyers’ hands!” Kathryn Baldrey-Chourio, founder, Nana’s Manners Above: The clever Nana’s Manners training cutlery will be making its UK trade show debut.

International Markets “This year we are hoping to expand our range focusing on our new designs and widening our market internationally. The impressive Peg Pegero toy range, which performed exceptionally well during our first year of trading in the UK, will also be on show, with hero models including the Vespa 12V, the licensed John Deere range and the Polaris Slingshot RC 12V which is an entry level for young toddlers. Talking to Rachelle Harel, it’s clear that Harrogate is going to be a big show for The RHSM Group as well. The company will be presenting two new fantastic brands; Breathablebaby (which has just rebranded, refreshed its packaging and will be presenting some gorgeous new designs) and Little Chick London. The latter will be showcasing with some exciting new lines including a heart-shaped Twinkle Lights bedtime soother and the unique SimplySwaddle, specially designed for premature babies. “Every year our industry faces new challenges and 2018 is going to be no exception,” says Rachelle. “The face of retail is changing dramatically and as a supplier we are putting together strategies

this important industry event. “Harrogate remains the only trade show in the UK where we can present our product portfolio to key buyers, customers and media in one place,” says Phil Howe, UK & Ireland country manager. “It’s also a great way to catch up with old colleagues and to see first-hand all the innovations coming to market. We are looking forward to welcoming new and existing customers to our stand at the show.” Peg Perego will be showing Mon Amour – an exciting new Prima Papa Zero 3 colourway in rose gold, which is already picking up a lot of attention on social media. The company is also presenting the new innovative Team modular system, as well as a

Affordable Luxury “Attending Harrogate was an important decision for Bebeboo this year. Not only have we re-branded, but we’ve launched a brand-new website and exciting new products with lots more still to come. We’re focusing on engaging with our customers and listening to what they have to say so that each product is bigger and better than the last. Safety, comfort and quality have always had our undivided attention, so we want to make sure we are the number one brand that everyone is talking about by offering luxury products without the luxury price tag.” Holly Ward, sales and marketing, Bebeboo Above: New lines for a newly-rebranded Bebeboo at Harrogate 2018.

to face these changes. Harrogate will be our first opportunity to talk to our retail partners about our new plans.” With the constantly changing retail landscape in mind, independent retailers looking to stand out from the crowd should also be using Harrogate International Nursery Fair as a valuable opportunity to form their strategies for the future. As the UK’s only opportunity to source new product and see so many trade suppliers in one place, we’ll see you there!

The Bébélephant Boulevard Once again, nursery distributor bébélephant will be running its ‘boulevard’ in Hall Q, just opposite the New Product Showcase. With the traditional Fizz Reception on Monday, the boulevard also plays host to some of bébélephant’s headline signings over the last year, from Whisbear to Nana’s Manners and Zellie Bags. In addition, visitors to the Boulevard

be able to browse delights from Mummy Loves Organics, see new designs from the award-winning BabyHub and Belo + Me and try out the award-winning HushCush. “All told, this has the makings of a great show,” says md Elliot Bishop. “I urge key decision makers from retail, large and small to support the only trade fair in the UK for our industry.”

PICK-ME-UP

Giving parents across the world the freedom to use both their hands and still keep baby close, the sling and carrier market has never been more popular. PPS takes a look at what’s on offer for the 2018 season.

A

sharp rise in the popularity of babywearing has seen the baby sling and carrier market go ‘mainstream’ in recent years. New brands and carriers have been developed and launched, as consumer and industry awareness of the benefits of safe, ergonomic babywearing increases. Parents and carers are now more likely than ever to research carriers before making their choice, often using specialist services such as sling libraries so they can find out which is the best fit for their family. Lia Murrain, owner of 2012 Ltd, UK distributor for Baby K’tan, agrees that the market has changed, pointing out that existing sling and carrier brands have adapted and changed their offering to meet customer needs. “Brands need to ensure they are offering products that fit in with the needs of today’s parent,” she explains. “Slings and carriers need to be versatile, easy to use, functional, safe and offer good value.” The award-winning Baby K’tan has no hooks, clips or clasps and is loved by parents around the globe for its versatility as it can be used in a number of carrying positions. Lia also believes that design and fashion are important, with more brands offering on-trend colours, designs and patterns. “We have a whole range of new fabrics and designs for this year,” she says, “it’s the same functional and excellent quality product, but customers want

something different and unique as well.” Also making sure its range of carriers stands out in the marketplace is Close, which has recognised the increase in consumer appetite for fashionable designs. “The consumer appetite for print is bigger and more far-reaching than it used to be,” says marketing manager Michelle Smith. “We have continued to make printed designs an integral part of our Caboo offering for 2018.” New product has always been important to Close. “First and foremost it is about creating a product that allows parents to carry their little ones comfortably and in the correct physiological way to support them at every developmental stage,” says Michelle. The entire range has been reengineered for 2018, using different fabrics to allow for clear identification between each product, all specifically designed for comfort, wearability and support. “We’ve also introduced new, softer fabrics and colourways for Caboo as well as a complete new look for the Caboo Lite – we’ve got something for everyone now, with more

distinction within the range. We think parents are going to love it!” New products and improved designs keep the babywearing sector moving forward, and Izmi (distributed by Cheeky Rascals in the UK) has just launched a luxurious 97% bamboo Stretchy Wrap for 2018. “We are also looking forward to a number of exciting design collaborations this year,” says founder Emily Williamson. “We’re always listening to user feedback; developing and improving our existing carriers and accessory range. This year we’ve improved our great design,

more easy and intuitive to use.” “The last two years have seen a boom in ergonomic, adjustable carriers using clever design features to provide improved adaptability and comfort for parent and baby” continues Emily. “There is now a huge selection of products for consumers and retailers to choose from, with new brands entering the market all the time. It will become vital for brands to establish consumer trust and a stable, reliable presence to succeed in the long term.” Wrap and carrier company Ergobaby has seen an uplift in sales across its entire business as parents become increasingly aware of the benefits of using a carrier or sling. “UK parents have three primary uses for a carrier,” says marketing manager Amanda Loveday, “to transport baby, to keep their hands free so they can get other things done and to keep baby close.” However, Amanda is aware that the sheer range of products available can be overwhelming for consumers, particularly first-time parents. “There are significant differences between consumers who prefer carriers to slings and vice versa,” she explains. “It is vital that retailers understand why parents buy into one of these products over another.” It is also important for retailers to recognise that expectant mothers and parents who already have children

Tried and Tested “There are a huge number of varying concepts and styles available and parents have a wider choice than ever before. Of course, for us that means that there is more competition than ever before! It is always important to be innovative in our market, but there is also a tried and tested element to carriers. The Hipseat especially proves that word of mouth and reviews from mums that have used the product and love it can ignite strong sales. We will be giving it a bit of a modern facelift this year, with exciting new fabrics and finishing touches.” Kelly Linthorne, marketing executive, Hippychick

are also very different markets. Ergobaby consistently researches the market and develops products that are easy to use and allow parents to express their individuality by providing different styles and designs. Innovation is a key consideration for all brands and Infantino is no different. European manager André Delore, believes that parents now expect more from their carriers than they did several years ago. “They are looking for seats that can adapt for infants of different sizes, they want carriers that will grow with their children and they look for features that make their lives easier, like pockets, hoods and bibs,” he says. “And, on top of all this, they want a carrier that reflects their own personal style, whether that’s a boutique print or a practical neutral look.” Many Infantino carriers feature seats that expand as the child grows, as the company enjoys meeting these challenges, often leading the field in smart, innovative features like canopy hoops, pacifier pockets and attachable teethers. New lines for 2018 include the Go Forward Evolved ergonomic carrier which offers four different carrying positions with an easy to use, intuitive design and the Together Pull-On Knit Carrier which features the comfort of a wrap, with an easy-to-wear, pre-formed design. As a company which specialises

in wraps, Je Porte Mon Bebe has seen a significant change in the market in recent years. “When we launched ten years ago, this was a niche market,” says sales and marketing director Sophie Huard. “We have seen the babywearing market become more oriented toward physiological messages and features – which is what we‘ve been doing since the beginning.” The French family-owned company first entered the market with its basic wrap in 2013, followed by a knot-free version in 2014 and the PhysioCarrier in 2015. “We are planning a national launch of our latest innovation at the beginning of April 2018,” reveals Sophie. “We can’t say too much, but it is a unique baby carrier that we believe is an answer to new unfulfilled needs of today’s parents!” Infant carriers have evolved to the degree that what was once an ‘extra’ product is now considered a necessity, even going so far as to replace the traditional stroller in some households. The benefits of bonding, hands-free baby holding and portability are clear to see – and retailers who are able to offer fittings and advice as part of their customer service will benefit in the long-term. TA LKI N G TO : DI ON O Inset: Seattle; where it all began.

Nearly two decades have passed since Diono first stepped out into the world and started a business dedicated to travelling as a family. Since then, the company has grown up and expanded, but the family values remain the same, as Helen Robinson, vp UK and Eire, told PPS.

FAMILY VALUES

T

he Diono story begins in Seattle. It’s where the company first started back in 1999 (under a different name and with just one product) and its where the HQ is situated even now. The creative team’s ideas are shaped by the uber cool Pacific Northwest where urban city culture meets wild landscapes, inspiring them to create lovingly engineered products for the modern family. “While the world has changed a lot, we’re proud to say that we haven’t,” says Helen. “We’re just as passionate about what we do today as we were back then.” Diono’s ethos is to celebrate what it means to be a family on the move, whether that’s a quick trip to the local shop, or a big roadtrip to somewhere new. “We always strive to keep families safe and smiling while on the go,” Helen explains. “And we do this by offering a wide range of product, from smart little extras – like the bestselling easy-view mirror – to big ticket items like the award-winning Radian 5 car seat.” For a long time, Diono was known as the market-leading brand for travel accessories – those clever little ideas which parents find they can’t live without. However, the launch of the Radian car seat

in 2016 and the Quantum travel system in 2017 have seen that perception evolve. “We have been working very closely with independent retailers to grow awareness of our new categories,” Helen offers, “and we are now seeing significant consumer awareness of Diono as a brand which supports safer car travel, with core messages such as extended rear facing.” With a focus on bringing products to market that fulfil a real need, Diono’s product offering now spans baby carriers, car seats, carrycots, strollers, travel accessories and travel systems – all of which have their unique place in the market. Many of the new lines are groundAbove left: The first Diono carrier, the Carus, comes with an unique day pack and offers parents total flexibility to travel with little one from birth to three-years-old. Right: Traverze is a small ‘suitcase’ stroller which will be part of the debut Mothercare capsule collection.

Capsule Collection Diono has always looked to work collaboratively with key retail partners and will be launching an exclusive capsule collection with Mothercare this March. The capsule collection will be made up of the Quantum2 travel system, the Traverze stroller and four-in-one carrier, the Carus. “First feedback from consumer trials has exceptionally positive,” Helen reveals. “These launches are going to be a pivotal point in the next stage of growth for Diono.”

breaking and innovative, as Helen explains. “Traverze, for example, is the first stroller with a telescopic luggage-style handle. Our ongoing product development will bring innovative new product to market throughout 2018 and beyond.” Diono product is now on sale in more than 50 countries and the company has been reporting double digit growth for over ten years, but it is still focused on growth, building its portfolio ever further and investing significantly to enhance its new product development and commercial management. While undergoing its own company-wide evolution, Diono bought carrier company We Made Me into the Diono family. The acquisition took place last year and was a big boost, as Helen explains: “This brand has a great heritage with a devoted following and gives us the opportunity to talk to parents who are looking for emotive and natural options in their world.” The rest of 2018 will see Diono continuing to build the brand by investing in its digital channels, working with retail partners and enriching its relationship with parents. “We’re looking forward to Kind und Jugend at the moment,” reveals Helen, “that’s where retailers will be able to see our transition into the next best ‘little big brand’ in the industry!” PROGRES SIVE PRESCHOOL

TREN D FOCU S : U N I CORN S

It may be the stuff of folklore, but the sales created by unicorn product over the past 12-18 months certainly haven’t been mythical. It’s a trend that has touched pretty much every category within the nursery and preschool sectors, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down as we continue through 2018. PPS takes a closer look.

THE

magic

O

ver the past 18 months, one trend has really come to the fore in the nursery and preschool space – unicorns are everywhere, and there are no signs of their popularity fading anytime soon. Notably, this is one trend which isn’t limited to any particular category – the galloping magical marvels have been a hit across pretty much everything. “I feel there are now very few brands which don’t have a unicorninspired product in their collection,” says Skip Hop’s Gemma Stokes, “from coffee, bagels and unicorn ‘bark’, to make up, inflatables and unicorn ‘snot’ - aka glitter!” Last year saw Skip Hop welcome Eureka Unicorn to its Zoo family, which includes products across the range such as weaning accessories and tableware,

on-the-go lunch boxes and snack pots, plus backpacks and luggage travel accessories. In addition, it has added the Rainbow Unicorn to its Bandana Buddies range, while there is also the Unicorn Activity Gym and the Unicorn Lock Top Sports Bottle is about to hit shelves. Orange Tree Toys is currently in the process of expanding its unicorn character into a range of products – this

will include development toys, nursery items and musical instruments among others. Currently, the character is part of the Animal Fairy collection which features a skittle set and individual pushalongs, expected to launch in spring. Rob Morris, founder of Happy Hopperz, explains that the company had to work fast to get a Unicorn Happy Hopper tooled and sampled once it noticed the trend. Its pastel turquoise unicorn – complete with purple stars and horn – is part of the 2018 collection and Rob is confident it will become a best-seller for the summer. Traditional toy lines have also been using the unicorn trend to great effect. Lanka Kade has introduced a unicorn jigsaw puzzle and a pull-along, both handcrafted from sustainably sourced rubber wood. The company’s Millie Sibley tells PPS: “We first noticed unicorns growing exponentially in popularity around 18 months ago and we were supported in 

Perfect Patterns For Cosatto, the unicorn trend became noticeable back in 2016, which is when it first introduced the Magic Unicorn pattern into its collection. The company now offers 14 products in the print, with top sellers including the Zoomi Group 123 car seat and Noodle Supa highchair. “Magic Unicorn continues to be a firm Cosatto and customer favourite. The unicorn trend continues to grow year-on-year and because of this, Above: Cosatto noticed our Magic Unicorn products are currently stocked the trend back in 2016. within 115 retailers,” says Cosatto’s Charlotte Stanway. “One of the most important things retailers can do to ensure that the unicorn trend is a success is to enable consumers to buy into as much or as little of the trend as they want. Some consumers may want everything in unicorn – pink, purple and plenty of sparkle, whereas others prefer an accent such as a changing bag.”

Its soft toy line, Wilberry, has welcomed a unicorn to the Mini collection, with the first delivery already sold out. In addition, a unicorn is also present in its Long Sleeve Glove Puppet range and its CarPet line. The GP Flair portfolio is also home to a number of unicorn lines. For example, the Peppy Pets collection has a bouncy unicorn with a comical pull-along action, while Puppy Surprise is also due to welcome baby unicorns. Emmanuelle Cadet, head of marketing, says: “The unicorn theme emerged as a firm children’s favourite a few months ago, so we felt we had to respond to this demand with compelling products.” In the clothing category, Lucy Jewson, co-founder of Frugi, exclaims: “We love Below left: Orange Tree Toys is to expand its unicorn character into a full product range. You can also find unicorns in our Magic Rainbow all-over print, on the Spring Skater Dress, Libby printed leggings and Spring Skort, as well as applique unicorns on our Heather Hoody and Sophie applique top.” In publishing, Usborne released ‘That’s not my unicorn…’ in July 2017, with the baby book quickly becoming the fastest selling Usborne book and the biggest baby book of the year. On top of this, Usborne has a Unicorns Sticker Book, as well as a clothing range with Paul Dennicci (available exclusively through Mothercare) including ‘That’s not my unicorn…’ pyjamas and booties. “We have several unicorn titles planned for 2018, including Little Sticker Dolly Dressing Unicorns, Magic Painting Unicorns, ‘That’s not my unicorn...’ Book and Toy and a Unicorns Book and Jigsaw set,”says Boyd Denton, Usborne territory manager. Finally, to complete the ultimate unicorn experience, Amscan has a Magical Unicorn partyware collection with items including coordinating tableware, invitations, decorations, favours and more to complete the theme. The company has also extended its bestselling range of unicorn foil balloons, including the addition of an Airwalker at 116cm high, while unicorn costumes will also be introduced this year. Amscan’s Charlotte Cox concludes: “The unicorn trend has transferred across several different categories and

is already a popular party theme.” It certainly looks like the nursery and preschool sectors will continue to believe in the mythical creatures for a while yet.

Dress To Impress “We love unicorns here at Kite HQ!” exclaims marketing manager, Lucy Jackson. And the company has certainly enjoyed success with the trend, selling out of many of its unicorn styles quickly last season, with unicorn dresses being among the most popular. For spring 2018, the focus will be on the unicorn t-shirt, which features a large applique showcasing fabrics from the rest of the range. In addition, for summer, Kite has the Narwahl t-shirt, a real-life unicorn of the sea. “We design around a year in advance, so we spotted an opportunity in 2016 and from then on we have seen the trend grow and grow. Our previous season unicorn designs landed just as the trend became fairly ubiquitous,” says Lucy. “There’s lots of opportunity for retailers to link the theme across so many areas from toys to stationery, fashion and more. With themed displays and even activity areas, retail can create genuine buzz to make the very most out of the consumer love of unicorns.” Above Kite will be focusing on unicorn t-shirts this spring.

A PARENT ROLEPLAY TOYS, FOR PERSPECTIVE GIRLS AND BOYS! In her latest column for Progressive Preschool, columnist Lisa – a blogger, graphic designer and parent to three-yearold Taylor and newly-born Harriet – looks at how role-play toys prepare children for real life.

Honest and upfront thoughts on parenting from columnist, blogger and parent-of-two Lisa Beever. www.leeleeloves.co.uk

N

ooo, you don’t want that dolly… How about a car instead?” Hang on. Why wouldn’t he want the dolly and why does another mother feel it’s appropriate to tell my son otherwise? Because he’s a boy? Surely not. Of course, not everyone has this outlook when it comes to gender and most parents would let Taylor have the doll, thank goodness. It’s 2018, a time where it’s normal for us to see stay-at-home dads and same-sex couples – and gender equality is actually a thing! We’re no longer pigeon-holed into roles based solely on our gender. Women are running major corporations, men are washing the dishes and changing nappies and I wouldn’t want my children to see the world any other way. So why do people still have this problem with toys? Why are so many role-play toys seen as being gender specific? Not everyone will happily let a little boy try on mummy’s highheels or encourage a little girl to pick up the pretend power tools, but it’s our duty to raise our

children to be capable, caring, open-minded human beings. Taking on non-gender-specific roles during play is only going to encourage them to be accepting of diversity. We have photographs of my older brother as child, wearing a a pink frilly bridesmaid dress or playing with a toy iron and wearing a cardboard lego box as a skirt. He was the middle child with two sisters, so we had all the role-play toys and playing ‘house’ was our favourite. Now I’m a mother myself and playing house isn’t quite how I imagined it would be! But some things don’t change and Taylor loves nothing more than pushing a garish pink floral pushchair around the church hall at our local toddler

dinosaurs, diggers or trains, let her! When Harriet grows up I’m certain her brother will have her playing Rescue Bots and cars. She’ll be kicking a ball around the garden and getting covered in mud. Encouraging Taylor to explore and have the freedom to make his own decisions we decided to give him his own baby while I was pregnant as I wanted him to feel he can play with dolls whenever and wherever he likes. It was a great way for us to explain how we were going to take care of his sister when she arrived and, more importantly, how he could join in! Bringing nappies and wipes, giving gentle cuddles and choosing outfits. Taylor also has a play kitchen and serves tea and cake on a daily basis, while his female friends are welcome Lef: Tea, anyone? The kitchen is a hotbed of activity. Below: Taylor learning some essential skills while caring for his doll.

group. Sometimes he places a baby in there, other times he pushes around cars or trains. And it isn’t uncommon for another mum to try and take it from him for their little girl. I can’t help asking myself, would they do the same if he was a girl? Or would they encourage their child to wait their turn instead? Does being female give them the right to have that particular toy? I think not. And if a little girl wants to play with

to play with his diggers and trains when they visit. We have an amazing interactive work bench and – despite it being aimed at boys – I don’t doubt that Harriet will want to play with it when she’s big enough. After all, who doesn’t want to play with tools? I’m all for letting toys be toys and encouraging a broad range of roleplay. And if my son wants to play with a doll then he is free to do exactly that.”

Starring Roles

It’s a staple of the toy category, with the products being a popular fixture on retail shelves because of their strong year-round performance. The role-play category is a mix of the evergreen favourites, through to dress-up and new innovations involving smart technology. PPS chats to some of the players in the category to find out more.

T

he role-play category is solid business for retailers, offering year-round sales whatever the weather and giving them the chance to get their teeth into some in-store theatre. For toy companies, the category gives them the opportunity to create products which stimulate a child’s imagination and aid their development at the same time. “Our role-play business over the last 12 months has been very good,” says Joe Rushworth, sales manager at Marbel. “We have an excellent mix of products in this sector, which is especially strong in the last quarter.” Some of the company’s top sellers include the Four Stage Rocket Ship, Doctor On Call, Chef’s Apron Set, Chef’s Choice, Homemade Pizza and the Checkout Register. And there are a host of new launches set for 2018, as Joe reveals: “New role-play products for 2018 are the Viking Castle, which comes with a Viking Warrior, powerful wizards and dungeons with this awesome

multi-level castle, Pop- up Toaster Set, Mix & Bake Blender Set, My Coffee Machine and My First Waffle Maker.” For Jura Toys, role-play is a major part of its business. “Our slogan is ‘play different’,” says the company’s Michelle Probert, “and our wooden toys encourage children to play and learn in a fun way. Parents can feel confident that our toys have great play value, are made from beautiful wood and Left: Jura Toys’ Green Market is a strong seller for the company. have outstanding attention to detail.” Green Market – which launched last year – is a strong seller for the company, while this year sees the arrival of a new range of doll accessories called Mademoiselle. The wooden role-play line includes a high chair, stroller, changing table and rocking cradle. In addition, Jura Toys has a range of work benches and tools called Brico, while it also has a comprehensive cooker collection. Michelle continues: “We feel that role-play is an imperative part of a child’s education in the early years. Imagination is a key part of learning. Some children find it easy to pretend while playing and others need encouragement. It is important to us that preschool children have the opportunity to play and develop their skills while having lots of fun, both independently and with others.” Little Tikes believes that its expansion into what it calls ‘smart role-

media investment into the category, with products such as the Construct ‘n Learn Workbench (which uses an app and wireless technology to bring to life each vehicle created alongside fun tool trivia) enabling it to gain additional space in the area. In addition, the Cook ‘n Learn Smart Kitchen uses responsive Bluetooth technology to provide realistic sound effects such as the sizzling of a pan. However, as head of marketing Michelle Lilley explains, classic lines are also strong sellers: “Classic products such as the Gas ‘n Go Mower and Wooden Cookin’ Creations remain core lines for us. Many of

our established products are now immediately recognisable, while creating innovative new lines has helped us gain more space in the category. “We truly believe role-play is instrumental for preschool development. It helps to support a child’s tactile coordination

All Dressed Up Amscan added a new collection of role-play accessory sets for ages four to six at the beginning of last year, which have proved popular according to the company’s Charlotte Cox. “The range includes popular career role-play themes such as doctors, police, astronauts and chefs, as well as adventurous themes from a western option to a knight,” says Charlotte. “All of the role-play kits are unisex. Our top selling role-play kits include the police, explorer and pirate themes.” Further additions to the offering are also being planned. New licensed lines will arrive this year

including The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Elmer the Patchwork Elephant. Meanwhile, new additions to the Travis Dress up by Design collection include some themed tutu sets including unicorn, bunny, fawn and queen of hearts. Each tutu comes with a matching headband to complete the look. Also new is a collection of hobby horse sets for children aged three years plus.

skills, as well as encouraging them to enjoy interactive and imaginative play and develop social skills.” Classic, meanwhile, is a word that aptly describes Le Toy Van’s roleplay offer. Marketing and product development manager, Marie Bureau, says that Honeybake is currently one of the company’s strongest collections. Some of its best sellers include the Mixer Set, Ice Lollies, Café Machine and Doctor’s Bag, while the new Popcorn Machine launched at Toy Fair. Also getting a good reaction at the recent shows, a Card Machine is also launching, as well as a cooker and accessories set and a pram with removable canopy feature in two colours. Marie says: “Wooden toys are important to consider in the mix of toys and games for developing preschoolers. They are great for developing fine motor skills, imagination and they last longer than other kind of toys so they can be passed on from generation to generations. For Le Toy Van products, displaying the items in-store is key to showcase the quality, colours and size. It has been proven to increase the sales of our larger items.” Simon Tomlinson, head of marketing at Learning Resources, believes that there is a strong future for traditional play and role-play. “Our Pretend & Play range, which aids early childhood development and communication skills through imaginative play and includes products such as the School Set, Post Office Set and Calculator Cash Register, sells fantastically well,” he says. “Another great performer for us is our New Sprouts range, which is suitable for children as young as 18 months old and uses bright and colourful products which have instant child appeal and provide hours of hands-on, imaginative, unplugged play.” The Pretend & Play range has grown with the addition of a Pet Vet Hospital, while Learning Resources is also introducing Playbrix Royal Adventure and Playbrix Pirate Adventure sets in 2018, as well as additions to its Playfoam and Jumbo animals ranges. Simon sums it all up by saying: “Traditional play is social and involves playing with other children or adults from an early age and is critical to our development as people.” PROGRES SIVE PRESCHOOL

Are You Sitting

COMFORTABLY?

The car seat sector has grown significantly in recent years, with consumers taking decisions about their child’s safety more seriously than ever before. Legislative changes aside, parents are looking for safe, affordable car seats which will keep their charges safe and comfortable. PPS takes a look at the highlights within the car seat market for 2018.

O

f all the ‘newborn musthaves’ which parents are told they can’t live without, car seats are one of the few that are genuinely essential. Some hospitals and birthing centres won’t even let you leave with your precious new cargo until they have seen that you have a car seat to take them safely home in – so how else has the car seat market changed in recent years? “Consumer power is greater than ever before, which means it is imperative for brands to meet the safety standards consumers have come to expect while also matching that with the design of the seats,” says Michael Wilkins, the UK marketing manager for Kiddy. “This includes both the look and feel of the car seats, as well as any design features that make the Right: Dorel’s Maxi-Cosi Rock will be replacing the Maxi-Cosi Pebble as a more affordable i-Size solution. Far right: The Cozy ‘n’ Safe signature range has a number of new lines for 2018.

seat easier to use or give additional functionality – such as the Kiddy lie-flat feature in the Evoluna i-Size.” “New parents,” Michael continues, “generally fall into the millenial demographic and so they expect design and technology to be married up. These elements are are becoming imperative to car seat manufacturers.” Extended rear-facing is now a popular choice and Kiddy will also be entering this market towards the end of this year. One of Kiddy’s most anticipated new products for 2018 will be the Evoluna i-Size 2 infant carrier, the new and improved version of the award-winning Evoluna i-Size; highlighting the company’s constant desire to evolve. Since the new regulations came into force, parent awareness of

car seat safety has increased, which has seen useage increase across the board. “We’ve seen a big surge in demand for our high-back booster seats since last year’s legislation change,” says Jessica Miln, marketing manager for Cozy ‘n’ Safe. “Even with the reassurance that parents and retailers didn’t need to ditch existing booster seats, it created greater awareness about better car seat protection for older children.” Jessica also states that; “The reduction of death and serious injury of children in road traffic accidents is undoubtedly down to new car seat technology and design.” Cozy N Safe’s Signature range brings bright new legends into the children’s car seat market for 2018 with the new Arthur – a Group 0+/1/2/3 seat – launching at Harrogate this month. Other new lines include Tristan (a new iSize plus) as well as Lancelot and Galahad. Paul Sirett, country manager at BeSafe, agrees that new design and technology is important to the car seat market, saying; “Design and technology is the life-blood of longterm success in this sector. The new UN R129 Regulation (the iSize legislation) is fortunately driving a lot of innovation which is ultimately good for retailers and, most importantly, for children!” Paul also believes that the market has really polarised in the last 18 months. “There’s a clear divide between consumers  PROGRES SIVE PRESCHOOL

iSize regulation seats and those looking for the lowest price,” he offers. “This development has created a huge opportunity for retailers, as well as a huge threat. Chasing units alone can result in less cash in the till at the end of the week – specialist retailers have a great opportunity to upsell the extra features of the more advanced seats.” Aimed at the slightly older market, BeSafe will be launching the first iSize-approved highback booster later this year – the BeSafe iZi Flex Fix, which will transform the safety of the children who use it. Focusing on another aspect of the market is Nikki Vadera, head of marketing at Dorel, who points out that parents are increasingly choosing car seats with their pushchairs to create an all-inone travel system. “Consumers are seeking perfect-match car seats and so we have seen a rise in collaborations centred around car seats and accessories,” she explains. “Meanwhile, the legislation is constantly evolving, so it is our responsibility as manufacturers to ensure we are providing clarity while offering the safest solutions at different price points to meet consumer’s needs.” While acknowledging that design is a consideration, Nikki asserts that technology is more important in the car seat sector, as ‘technology is intrinsically linked to safety’. “However, in saying that, we know that consumers say comfort is a very important factor and therefore if the design alludes to this, it will support the buying decision.” Maxi-Cosi will be entering the multi-group market for the first

time in 2018 and is launching two group 1/2/3 seats this year as well as a lie-flat solution of the highest safety. Also making big changes in the car seat market is Britax Römer, a company which prides itself on ‘ being at the forefront of the industry, by challenging itself to constantly innovate and maintain the highest standards of safety’. “In the past, child seats were sometimes described as safe and functional, but this came at the cost of ergonomics, comfort and style,” explains European product expert Mark Bennett. “At Britax Römer, it is our aim to not only meet, but exceed regulatory requirements.” “Today; safety, ergonomics, comfort and style go hand-in-hand and are front of mind when we design a modern child seat,” he continues. “Our success is regularly celebrated

and verified independently, as a result of vigorous testing with organisations such as Which? or by our consumer award wins such as the prestigious Red Dot and IF Design Awards.” Britax Römer is is currently working on innovations that will improve the comfort of its seats as well as safety. Recent developments include SICT technology (which provides additional support in the event of a side collision), the SecureGuard feature (which ensures a vehicle seat belt is properly positioned) and the XP-Pad (which diverts up to 30% of the energy forces away from a child’s neck). The car seat market is hugely competitive, which means manufacturers are continuously striving to develop new designs and technology to ensure they stand out from competitors. The amount of choice can be confusing for consumers, so retailers who specialise in car seats and how to fit them are in a great position to take them along for the ride. Below: The Doona Infant Car Seat is the only infant car seat to feature an integral mobility solution, allowing parents to convert their car seat into a stroller at the click of a button.

Innovation Insight Manufacturers are constantly working to improve car seats, with some improvements driven by regulation and some by innovation and commercial competition. “New design and technology are critical competitive drivers,” says Marc Kelly, marketing director at Cuddle Co. “Car seats are getting better and safer and they keep on adding new features and new materials such as carbon

fibres and energy-absorbing polymers.” Simple Parenting’s Doona infant car seat is an example of this groundbreaking innovation. Despite being introduced in 2015, it is still considered by many to be the most innovative product in this sector in the last decade. “Our mission is creating products that simplify the lives of families while putting safety, quality and design as top priorities,” adds Marc.

“We are now working on several new features which will take Doona to the next level, enhancing baby’s safety and comfort while continuing to simplify the day-to-day lives of parents.”

The Pallas S-Fix is one of four car seats recently launched by Cybex. Suitable from nine months to twelve years old, the Pallas S-Fix includes a number of enhanced features including an optimised impact shield which can be adjusted with one hand and a reclining headrest that prevents the child’s head from tipping forward while sleeping. It also features a new Linear SideImpact Protection System (L.S.P.) which reduces the forces of an impact from a side-impact collision by approximately 25%, when compared to the same car seat without extended L.S.P. Joie Bold is three seats in one and is designed to grow from nine months to 12 years old. The Bold stands out from the crowd providing 5-point harness security up to seven years old (25kg), converting to a belted booster from 15-35kg and Joie ISOSAFE connectors, top tether and vehicle belt combine for a safer, stronger installation. It has powerful side impact protection with Guard Surround Safety panels that shield little ones from head to hip and for ease of use the Grow Together multi-height headrest and harness system enables quick, simple adjustment with one-hand to 11 positions as the child grows. BESAFE BeSafe has launched the first highback booster seat on the market to meet strict new safety standards. The new iZi Flex Fit offers dynamic flexperformance and Side Impact Protection ‘bumpers’, but also features BeSafe’s well proven innovation SIP+. BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size allows families to fit up to three people in a row by simply detaching the ‘bumpers’ that face the inside of the car. The lap-belt guider and shoulder-belt guiders also ensure optimal positioning of the vehicle belt. Safety and comfort are further improved by the innovative PAD+ that acts as a cushioning bumper between the child’s chin and chest while also softening the edge of the vehicle belt.
