At the time of writing, the UK is in the grip of Platinum Jubilee fever. With just a week to go until the four-day weekend begins, it seems red, white and blue is everywhere, just as the party industry hoped it would be. Schools have been holding picnics and parties, final preparations are being made for village fetes, Jubilee jamborees, street parties, BBQs, concerts and more. And it seems retailers are already selling out of the Union Jack ranges so carefully prepared for Above: Progressive Party Europe’s Katie Roberts-Mason. this once in a lifetime event. But far from being in danger of the postJubilee blues once we all head back to the office, the companies we spoke to for this issue are looking forward to a summer of celebrations, with a surge of weddings and hen parties expected following the restrictions over the past few years. One supplier told us that even those who did marry under Covid rules, are now planning extra parties to celebrate their vows with all those who weren’t able to join them on the day. Despite, or perhaps because of, all that is going on in the world, from the devastating war in Ukraine, to the continuing effects of Covid, and the impact that the rising cost of living is having on us all, consumers are grabbing every opportunity to come together with friends and family and create happier times, with both hands. In the midst of difficulties and challenge, there is something very comforting about the safety of a community and loved ones, and creating happy shared experiences. Challenges continue in business, too, but the party industry is doing what it does best – keeping calm, carrying on and catering for those parties to lift everyone’s spirits. Rising costs, shipping delays and Brexit complications are still in full force, but with careful planning and forecasting, the industry is managing to continue forging ahead. Such challenges have arisen repeatedly over the last 40 years, but a fabulous example of a company which has repeatedly overcome these hurdles and continues to innovate and provide impressive customer service, is Club Green, which celebrates 40 years of business in 2022. We caught up with commercial director, Michele Gaudelli, in this issue, to find out the secrets to surviving, and thriving for four decades. So it seems that ahead of the big Halloween and Christmas push, there is still much to play for over the coming months for party suppliers and retailers.

Amscan acquires Roald Dahl licence

The new Roald Dahl collection will feature costumes, accessories and wearables and will be ready to ship in Q4 22. Available throughout Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia, phase one of Amscan's styles will be ready to ship in Q4 for an on-shelf date of January 2023. The initial range will comprise of over 20 styles, including many favourite Roald Dahl characters. Key icons from Matilda, including Miss Trunchbull, as well as the leading characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, The Twits and Fantastic Mr Fox, will be the first developed, with many more

revealed throughout 2022. Amscan hopes the range will be a hit for Book Week, and has ensured the collection includes styles for both children and adults, with matching options available on selected styles. The new range has been designed in the UK and created in close collaboration with the Roald Dahl team to achieve costumes that are both wearable and authentic to the characters. Lily Olley, lead costume designer at Amscan, commented: "Working on the new exciting range for Roald Dahl has been really great fun. Collaborating with the Roald Dahl team, reviewing the amazing illustrations to help design costumes that capture

the essence of the brand, whilst being mindful of the importance of sustainability and interactivity in today's costume market." Amscan's group licensing director, Mel Beer, added: "We're delighted to be working with

the Roald Dahl team to bring these classic characters to life, through a broad offering of costumes with coordinating accessories, designed in our unique Amscan style."

Halloween & Party Expo announces dates and location for 2023 The Halloween, party and celebration event will take place from 10 - 12 January 2023 in Las Vegas, NV. The Halloween & Costume Association and Clarion Events have announced that the Halloween & Party Expo will return to The Mirage in Las Vegas for the 2023 event. The show successfully returned this year in January and was met with great feedback from buyers and exhibitors alike, with both commenting that there is no substitute for a face-to-face experience. Marni Golden Vinci, show director, commented: "The focus of the 2022 event was to create a safe environment for buyers and vendors to get back to business. The feedback post-event was overwhelmingly positive regarding the return to live shows, the need for the events, and the business that got done on the show floor. "Most importantly, we heard from our customers that they were delighted with the new location and format of the show. Las Vegas is convenient to travel to and holding the event in a host hotel allowed more opportunity to create a community feel during and after show hours. We are excited that we could answer their request and return to Las Vegas in 2023." Hotel reservations and attendee registration, which is complimentary for buyers, will open late summer. Exhibition space is available now and those interested in booth space or sponsorship should contact Marni Golden Vinci on marni.vinci@ clarionevents.com Right: Halloween & Party Expo will return to The Mirage in Las Vegas in January 2023.

BAPIA announces new Fundays The new BAPIA Fundays are available to both members and nonmembers of the organisation and the first will be held in June in Wolverhampton. Other dates and locations will be announced soon. John Bowler of BAPIA, commented: "BAPIA Fundays will be a combination of interactive demonstrations with plenty of hands-on fun activities, a business session and a fantastic opportunity to network and meet up with other balloon and party professionals. "It will also be a great opportunity to meet the BAPIA team, BAPIA instructors and other BAPIA members including representatives from UK's leading manufacturers and suppliers." The cost for the day, including lunch and refreshments is £25 with a £15 supplier voucher issued at the venue on the day of the event. Please note that only attendees of the day will receive the voucher and goody bag. Terms and conditions apply. John continued: "There is much more to a BAPIA Funday than just having fun. As we know, starting up and running a business is not easy, having the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals and connect with other business owners is invaluable. Knowing what's new and being able to keep up with industry trends is key when a company is looking for a competitive advantage. "Our monthly BAPIA Fundays are an opportunity to tick many boxes and we see them evolving over time once we see what works well and what our members might be requesting for future days." Above: BAPIA is planning to roll out more dates and locations for its new Funday events.

Jakks Pacific reports highest sales in 14 years The Q1 results show the supplier's costume business has more than doubled compared to Q1 2021. Jakks Pacific has reported net sales of $120.9 million for the first quarter of 2022, an increase of 44% compared to $83.8 million last year, the highest Q1 net sales since 2008. The company said the sales were led by strong growth in action play, dolls/ dress-up and costumes. The quarter saw an adjusted net loss attributable to common stockholders of $2.6 million, compared to $9.5 million in Q1 2021.

Stephen Berman, chairman and ceo of Jakks, commented: "Our 2022 is off to an exceptional start. For several years, we have talked about maintaining a disciplined focus on growing evergreen toy categories and brands to deliver

consistently improving, yet sustainable results. "In addition, this approach can also benefit from the excitement and enthusiasm new entertainment content can generate. As the year begins, we are starting to see strong results as more consumers discover and embrace films like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Disney's Encanto, and want to deepen their relationships with the characters by engaging with a broad array of our toys, Halloween costumes, day-to-day role play and many other related products." PARTY NEWS

Amscan International divests Irish retail store and creates franchise partnership The global designer, manufacturer, distributor, wholesaler and retailer of party products and supplies, has divested its Irish retail store and created a franchise partnership for its retail brand, Party Delights, in Ireland, to Dublinbased Party HQ for an undisclosed sum. Amscan has co-owned Party HQ with Creative Retail Solutions (CRS) since the end of 2017. Party HQ has been run day-to-day by the CRS management team, led by entrepreneur Vincent Linch. This comprised Party HQ opening and managing a Party City store in Dublin, which has been rebranded as Party Delights, and operating temporary Halloween stores under the brand Halloween HQ. Following the deal, Party HQ is now fully owned by CRS, and employs 30 people. The new deal was agreed due to Amscan's strategic growth plan, which focuses on ecommerce retail and wholesale opportunities, while the Party HQ management wishes to pursue other growth areas.

Two new Party Delights stores were opened within the last month. One is in Mahon Retail Park, Cork, the other in Swords Pavilions Shopping Centre, and Party HQ is actively seeking to expand its retail footprint. Joe Hennigan, Amscan International ceo, commented: "The Party HQ team is extremely talented and has an exciting business plan that they wish to pursue. "This deal enables the freedom for the team to pursue those goals and for Amscan International simplifies our structure and creates an exciting commercial partnership. We will continue to work closely with Vinnie and the team as commercial partners." Party HQ CEO, Vincent Lynch, added: "We are delighted to have completed this deal and can now focus on executing our strategic plan. "We believe there is great potential in the party category and our differentiated retail proposition in

the Irish market. Having the franchise rights to the Party Delights brand in the Irish market, and a close commercial partnership with Amscan International, will help us accelerate our ambitious plans." Qualatex announces UK Bubble Tour

Above:The new warehouse is the last in a series of empowering business expansion plans at Rubies.

Rubies expands distribution network The company has acquired a new 35,000 m2 warehouse near Venlo in the Netherlands to expand its EMEA distribution. The latest DC and fulfilment centre increases Rubies’ strength in distribution and reach, while staying two steps ahead. The warehouse is the latest in a series of empowering business expansion plans. Valued customers across Northern Europe can expect faster deliveries and a higher availability of stock. Mike O'Connell, managing director at Rubies, said: "With demand for our assortment increasing exponentially, we are continuing to invest in tech, infrastructure and distribution. Our logistical model allows us to fully capitalise on the multichannel model we have established. This latest DC is just one part of a number of significant changes that are happening and underpins our strength in category and supply in European distribution."

This summer, the Qualatex team is hitting the road on a tour consisting of a series of mini-masterclasses, hosted by Julie Dunham CBA and Lucy Hennessey CBA. The Bubble Tour will feature demos, hands-on creation and inspirational designs created with the versatile and long-lasting Bubble Balloon. Ideal for customers who are new to the world of balloons, who have never worked with Bubble Balloons before, or for those who just want to improve their inflation skills or update their portfolio with on-trend designs, the mini-masterclass is a great opportunity to have fun, gain some hands-on experience and ask the experts whatever you want to know. Julie Dommett, head of marketing for Pioneer Europe said: “Bubble Balloons have been in huge demand over the last two years, so they have been in short supply. We recognise that there will therefore be plenty of balloon artists who haven’t had the opportunity yet to explore working with these amazing balloons and experience the difference they can make to their decorating, event or retail business. So, we’re taking Bubbles on the road.” Each masterclass lasts for three hours and there will be a choice of morning or afternoon sessions at each stop. The class will cover air and helium inflation, personalisation, adding confetti, how to make gumballs and more. Julie Dunham added: “Lucy and I will be sharing tons of useful hints and tips at every stop and each delegate will be able to create and take away a number of Bubble Balloon designs. With inspiration, special offers and freebies too we promise it will be three hours very well spent.” Dates are planned from June to September. PARTY NEWS

Q1 net sales increase of 2.1% for Party City Left: Party City’s bottom line results were impacted by elevated costs during the first quarter of 2022.

The retailer has reported total net sales of $433 million for the first quarter of 2022, an increase of 2.1% year-on-year. The financial results also saw a GAAP net loss of $26.9 million and an adjusted EBITDA of $4.6 million. Brad Weston, ceo of Party

City, said: "We are pleased to deliver another quarter of topline growth with a sales increase of 1.4% and brand comp sales growth of 2.1%, despite a difficult consumer backdrop with the Omicron variant earlier in the quarter. "As expected, our bottom

line results were impacted by elevated costs, including greater than anticipated freight and commodity cost pressures that ramped up later in the quarter. Amidst this choppy macro environment, our teams are doing a good job executing against our strategic priorities of ongoing enhancements to customer engagement as well as digital, IT and supply chain, in support of our purpose to inspire joy and make it easy to create unforgettable memories." Total retail sales for the quarter increased 2.3% vs Q1 2021, primarily driven by strong comparable sales increases in seasonal categories. The total number of stores increased by eight.

Meanwhile, total gross profit margin decreased 380 basis points to 31.9% of net sales, and operating expenses totalled $158.1 million, or $9 million higher than Q1 2021. Brad continued: "As we look to the remainder of 2022, we expect supply chain and inflationary headwinds to continue, which is reflected in our updated outlook. While we navigate this near-term turbulence in costs, we are being very thoughtful with our mitigating actions on the pricing front, along with delivering an improved customer experience. "To that end, we remain focussed on executing against our strategic priorities, which we are confident will even better position Party City to drive long term growth and shareholder value."

Smiffys goes global with L.O.L. Having signed the initial deal in 2021, Smiffys and MGA Entertainment's relationship continues to grow as their L.O.L. Surprise! and L.O.L. Surprise O.M.G deal has been expanded into Australia and New Zealand. The collection is set to include everyday costumes and Halloween designs, based on the fashion dolls. Dominique Peckett, director at Smiffys, commented: "Australia is a huge growth area for us, and we look forward to bringing this global brand to the costume market in this territory." Smiffys first officially licensed collection of L.O.L. Surprise! costumes and accessories will launch in the UK, EEA, EU and Australia later this year.

Party business, Sancto enters voluntary liquidation Party products wholesaler and distributor, Sancto, has entered voluntary liquidation for its supply business due to health reasons, while also winding down its retail store. Operational since 1910, Sancto, which is run by the popular Solly family, has been a mainstay in the party industry. PPE understands that Sancto International, its supply business with a focus on the Widmann range, is in administration, whilst the retail business is also winding down over the coming months. It has not yet been decided how and where the Widmann range, from Milan, Italy, will be distributed in the UK market where Sancto has been the exclusive distributor. COLUMNIST

Below left: Ed Avis is the executive director of the National Costumers Association. Contact him at executivedirector@costumers.org.

Halloween is a delightful holiday packed with fun – parades, trick-or-treating, parties and other costumewearing opportunities. And Halloween pays a lot of bills for costume shops. But in the past couple of decades, as the popularity of the holiday has grown, big box stores and internet retailers have taken a growing share of sales.

There’s more to costume sales than Halloween

H

ow can costume shops fight back? By not limiting their sales to Halloween. That is something that we have been encouraging members of the National Costumers Association to do for a long time. Anytime a member complains about losing a sale to Target or Amazon, I remind them that the key to survival is diversifying. Kathleen Furore, who is the editor of our member publication, Costumer magazine, wrote an article for the most recent edition about non-Halloween costume sales opportunities. She specifically focused on summer, because this is the first summer since Covid started that people are really getting out. Among her suggestions:

for their commencement exercises. And be sure to stock merchandise dated with the graduation year — Class of 2022 glasses and cups, for example. Graduation banners and balloons also are great ideas (think about offering personalised options, too). FESTIVALS, CONCERTS AND FAN CONS Every time a large group gathers for some fun event, such as a concert or Renaissance festival, people are going to want costumes and

accessories. So keep track of those events in your community and be ready for them. Naturally, stock the appropriate products in your store, but also consider a pop-up store at or near the event itself. KIDS’ CAMPS Every community has them — so why not make your business part of them? Check with your local park district and area schools to see what they’re offering. Theatre camp? Make sure organisers know you can provide full costumes, accessories and props. Art camp? Consider offering a “learn to face paint” session for camp leaders, with discounts on paints for participating organisations. Day camp for little kids? Ask about setting up a face painting and/or temporary tattoo table one day on-site. Whatever approach you take to summer selling, don’t forget the important role promotions play in building business. “We have done discounts on holidays, or if there is a Friday 13th in any month, we have done a 13% off in-store only coupon,” one NCA member told Kathleen. “We have done a Halloween in July sale, and this year we are trying to plan a catwalk costume sneak peak of new and exciting costumes and wigs.” The bottom-line is that Halloween just isn’t the reliable money-maker it once was. The month of October might always bring a big month for you, but if you can bring in a steady flow the rest of the year – starting with this summer – you’ll be in a much better position. Below: What better time to showcase rainbow flags, banners, balloons and attire than Pride Month in June?

STOCK UP FOR PRIDE PARTIES AND PARADES June is Pride Month — what better time to showcase rainbow flags, banners, balloons and attire than during this month-long celebration? See when your community is planning a pride parade or other event and see if you can get a booth there to sell items. GRADUATIONS June is a big month for graduation parties. And lately, those celebrations include not only celebrations for high school and college grads, but for preschool, elementary and middle school students, too. SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS

G r e e n Pa rt y

Sustainability remains a key concern for industry and many companies are now working to improve the eco-credentials of their business practices. While consumers are now also more aware of their impact on the environment, there is still much more that can be done from manufacturing right down to shoppers to make sustainable living the norm, according to the party industry. PPE spoke to a number of suppliers who are working continuously on reducing their carbon footprint, to find out what they are doing and what challenges they are meeting along the way. Left: The party industry is working hard to create more sustainable party supplies, such as the Eco Rainbow range from Club Green.

W

hen any new manufacturing processes come into play, there is usually a price implication. This was and to a degree still is, a challenge in producing eco-friendly party supplies. And while consumers and retailers alike want to move to more sustainable options, price still proves a big factor in purchasing decisions, making it more difficult to make sudden changes to product offerings. Mark Brett, exclusive UK agent for Boland, explains: “The demand for sustainable products has been around for about three to four years now, however it has gone up a notch and whilst there are retailers who ask for sustainable product, when faced with a price difference still say: ‘My customers won’t pay that, they will want the cheapest’. That is starting to fade, especially as there is less of a difference than there was four years ago.” Party suppliers have worked hard to improve their sustainability, and Amscan

even hired a group sustainability manager, Raluca Runcianu, to do just that. Raluca explains how the issue has become more important over recent years: “Here at Amscan we have always been mindful of the environment, however, I think the events of the last few years have really made us realise that we need to actively get involved and do everything we can. Seeing what is happening across the world and having our own team being directly affected by climate change (storms, forest fires, floods) made us want to take even more accountability for ourselves and our products. “Whilst we all come from different backgrounds and have different goals and strategies in our markets, we are all united against this common enemy which is climate change. And of course we want to lead the way when it comes to creating the sustainable party of the future and be a positive example which many will want to follow.”

Similarly at Gemar, the issue of sustainability is an ongoing focus. Gloria Veta, brand and sales director, tells us: “Sustainability is more than a passing trend here at Gemar, it is a guiding principle that goes to the heart of everything we do. We are fully committed to creating a better future, for both the planet we live on and the people we share it with. “All of our latex balloons are made entirely from natural materials, and we actually save over 20g carbon for every balloon we make. We have even taken this a

Gemar’s balloons are made from caoutchouc – a natural, renewable and 100% biobased rubber latex. The latex is combined with organic pigments and this makes its balloons biodegradable ® at the same rate as an oak leaf. 93% of the materials used in the company’s manufacturing process are also renewable materials.

step further with our range of 100% FSC certified balloons, the gold standard in forest management.” Sustainability goes further than materials for Gemar, though, as Gloria continues: “That’s not all, sustainability is about more than environmental issues, it also includes everything from fair wages to community building. Ultimately, it’s making sure we have a positive impact on the world and leave it a better place for generations to come.” There is a number of factors which could help the industry as a whole become a more sustainable outfit. Georges Ghougassian, group director, licence and brand at Rubies, believes all parties need to work together: “We believe the industry needs to come together in order to improve its sustainability and impact on the world.

The more companies and individuals joining forces and looking at what they can collectively do, the more positive change we’ll see. “Overall, the changes so far have been positive and we’re proud to be part of a sector that’s changing how it operates, in some instances from the ground up, in order to protect the environment through sustainability.” Education for consumers is also key to ensuring a full circle of sustainability, says Mark: “There is still confusion amongst the buying public as to what is actually sustainable. They will buy something that they have insisted is compostable and then don’t compost it. Additionally, they don’t understand that most products that are biodegradable, need some help to biodegrade. Just chucking them in the bin and then into landfill will not always make them degrade.

Amscan’s sustainability process Amscan works on sustainability throughout its business. The team is currently identifying the hot spots, those parts with the highest emissions and setting reduction targets and strategies. The primary goal is reducing emissions. When it comes to the product portfolio, Amscan is working heavily on packaging and on reducing plastic and where possible replacing it with paper alternatives. The team has introduced a sustainable range of costumes made of recycled polyester, which is machine washable and for foil balloons and foil banners, is working together with Terracycle on a collection programme to collect and recycle.

“It’s a shame as most manufactures have gone to a lot of trouble and cost to ensure their product meets all Single Use Plastic requirements, for the end user to take little practical notice, apart from feeling better because they have bought product that is environmentally friendly.” Despite the challenges, the party industry is making great strides towards becoming more sustainable, and by working together and continuing to strive for better, this is likely to continue to improve and become the norm for suppliers, retailers and consumers alike. Below: The Green Collection will feature some of the classic characters in the Rubies licensed line-up.

The Green Collection Rubies is currently in the process of bringing the Green Collection to consumers across the globe. This conscious collection of costumes, which feature some of the biggest licences on the market, are made from recycled materials. On top of this, they also come in recyclable packaging made of recycled materials.

LUXURY TABLEWARE

Party tableware has traditionally been the domain of children’s parties, where themed paper plates, cups and napkins helped to set the tone of a party, while adult parties were often subject to plain colours and uninspiring design. More recently, however, more luxurious tableware ranges have been growing in popularity. The key suppliers tell Progressive Party Europe more about this growing trend.

The lap of luxury

W

hether it’s shaped plates and napkins, metallic or glitter designs, or even luxurious table decorations, the tablescape at parties has really upped its game over recent years. Tableware ranges are becoming more and more glamorous and design-led, tasking suppliers with the challenge of designing on-trend offerings to catch consumers’ eyes. Alex Love, product manager, party, at Pioneer Europe, tells us: “Tableware can make or break a party. A stylish tableware range is more than just a finishing touch or afterthought for a party now, it can carry the whole theme and tone of a party. It’s no surprise then that people are taking much more of an interest in the tableware they choose, rather than settling for the old quick fix ‘white paper plate’.” One of the major drivers behind tableware offerings becoming more luxurious is social media. We are all now able to get glimpses into stylish parties, including those organised by professionals, and those hosted by celebrities, to give inspiration for themes, décor and more. Organising parties is also now carried out with the endAbove right: The Pioneer Party Style collections, such as this Blue and Gold option, are complemented by a collection of banners and accents to make decorating a stylish party easier. goal of an instagrammable event. Elliott Peckett, director at Smiffys, explains: “At Smiffys, we have seen a massive increase in demand for tableware and party décor across ages and occasions. Social media has had a massive effect on how people celebrate occasions, with customers making sure their events are picture perfect to share online. “In response to this, we have created licensed ranges of party tableware,

perfect for different occasions. Our Peaky Blinders range will help transport guests straight to the Garrison deep in the streets of Birmingham, elevating any 20s themed party.” All that glitters has been a big recent trend and one that’s proved popular at Club Green. Ross Feeney, operations director at Club Green, comments: “We’ve seen a significant uplift in our metallic ranges in the past 18 months, with rose gold in particular being extremely popular. Our Hootyballoo range proves that partyware can be classy, and raises the bar significantly over the limited range of white partyware ranges available only a few years ago. “Our Partyware ranges have been designed with considerable flair, but not only do they look good, they feel good and offer great versatility for all sorts of events and occasions. Our retail customers like the ranges because we packaged the items really well, they look great on the shelves, and are proving eye-catching to customers.” Themes which work for numerous occasions have been successful for Pioneer Europe, as Alex outlines: “The Pioneer Party ‘Style’ collection offers four tasteful designs, suitable for every occasion, regardless of age. The Pink & Gold and Blue & Gold collections work brilliantly for birthdays and baby showers, but are just as at home at a summer BBQ. “The two ombré ranges, Rainbow Ombré and Rose Gold Ombré, offer a chic look for any fashion-conscious host, regardless of age or gender. This versatility works well for retailers as this compact range can sell for multiple occasions.” With a wide range of luxury options available, glamorous tableware to cater for all occasions and create that Instaworthy tablescape, is a must-stock option for modern party offerings.

IN FOCUS: CLUB GREEN

Years

Having begun life in 1982 as a small family run business, Club Green was the first to bring wedding favours to the UK from Italy. 40 years later, weddings are still a core part of the business, but it has grown beyond recognition into one of the leading party suppliers in the world. Progressive Party Europe sat down with commercial director, Michele Gaudelli, to find out about the last 40 years and the company’s plans for the future.

OF CLUB GREEN

40

years in business has seen Club Green overcome an array of challenges, demonstrating the team’s strength and determination. Michele Gaudelli, commercial director, explains: “We managed to pull the company through the Great Recession period that occurred between 2007 and 2009. Since then, we have encountered many other issues such as Brexit, Covid 19, the fall of the dollar against the pound, huge hikes in shipping cost, supply chain

issues and now the impact of the current war. “We have built a very solid business with great loyal customers that we are thankful for,” he continues. “Our customers are one of the key ingredients to our successful business

and I have always said to our staff that without good customers, you are not a good business, hence why we give our customers the very best products and service.” Another of the crucial strengths of Club Green is its team. The staff has a low turnover rate, with many members having worked there for over ten years, two for over 15 years, and one who has recently returned after a 20-year gap. Michele furthers: “Our people, products and processes ensure that our customers love dealing with our very friendly team. On many occasions we have been told that our customer service is the best. “We also have our very own talented design team who continue to keep an eye on evolving trends to ensure we keep designing and producing exciting new products and ranges. Our team is hard-working, loyal, and incredibly keen to offer great service to our clients.” Communication between the loyal customers and strong team is also

Inset: Club Green controls its own logistics and distribution giving the business huge flexibility.

The rise and rise of Hootyballoo “In 2018, we launched Hootyballoo, the Club Green on-trend party brand, which has now become one of the leading party brands across the world,” Michele tells us. “Hootyballoo now has ontrend party products for every occasion, be it weddings, hen parties, baby showers, kids’ parties, birthdays/milestones or general party, we have it covered. Hootyballoo now proudly supplies a growing number of party retailers across the country.” Right: The team prides itself on listening to its customers, understanding their needs and offering bespoke products where required.

key: “We also listen to our customers. Understanding our customers and their needs helps to ensure we keep our product range fresh and ontrend. We’re also happy to create bespoke items for clients, and never shy away from a challenge.” Logistics and distribution are dealt with in-house at Club Green, meaning that the company doesn’t have to rely on third party warehousing partners to distribute products, providing greater flexibility. These factors combine to create a strong business and one that has weathered recent storms impressively well. Michele says: “We are very proud to say that our business has continued to grow during the last three years, including through the tough pandemic and this is very much down to the great ethics of our business. We are hardworking people that even when the going gets tough, work hard to continue the great work we do to service our great customers. “The business has this year had the very best year ever and we look forward to continuing this in the next three years. We love the work we do and will continue to design and produce beautiful products for our customers and the markets we work in.” And this is exactly what Club Green has done so well for the past 40 years. Its origins as a family run business, set up by Agostino Cipullo and Pino Aina, remain strong and the founders are still involved in the business today. Throughout those four decades however, the company has responded to a changing market in order to remain current and successful.

Above: Michele Gaudelli; Agostino Cipullo, director of finance; Ross Feeney, operations director. Left: The Surrey-based HQ is home to Hootyballoo and Club Green from finance to logistics and everything in between.

Michele continues: “The business started off focusing on wedding favours and craft products within its sectors. The company continued to evolve its products and ranges for many different occasions including communions, graduations and other themed events.” This evolution has witnessed the party industry itself changing too, as Michele tells us: “The party industry has moved from what I would call ‘working mens’ club’ décor to beautiful ontrend themed party solutions including backdrops, balloon arches and many more eye catching and fun concepts. “Without a doubt, the internet/social media has been the most significant change in the events industry. More and more celebrities are posting photos of parties and celebrations, which has influenced the direction of some of the new party products we are seeing in today’s market.” Such growth and longevity for 40 years in any industry is something to be celebrated, but in the party

industry, it seems fitting that Club Green is planning to mark the date in style. “We will be having a party to celebrate this proud milestone,” concludes Michele. “And we will also be looking to take our fantastic staff away to somewhere very hot where they can all enjoy some well-earned down time and party with a drink or two.”

Trend setters Trends come and go and Club Green has its finger firmly on the pulse of the party industry fashions. “Theme-based parties, such as party animals, dalmatian etc, are still very popular trends. These trends will continue to be popular and we will see new themes launching each year,” explains Michele. The retail trends are also shifting: “Online purchase of party products continues to grow and more and more retailers are putting more emphasis on offering a much more sophisticated party range and offering.” MAY/JUNE 2022 PROGRESSIVE PARTY EUROPE

FOCUS ON: HEN AND STAG

Wedding season is officially almost upon us, and with many having had to postpone or cancel in recent years, there will be a lot of celebrating to catch up on this year. And of course with weddings, come hen and stag parties. Progressive Party Europe caught up with some key suppliers in the sector to find out what their expectations are for this year’s festivities. Left:There are plenty of items in the Team Bride range from Amscan. The rose gold and blush designs cover tableware, décor and wearables. The range can also be mixed and matched with the metallic range, featuring tassel garlands and party bags.. inal planning for hen and stag parties is now in progress as friends and family of the newlywed couples-to-be organise the big parties for their loved ones. Following two years of wedding restrictions, there is a pent-up demand for celebrating love and marriage in style. Emily Duke, marketing and design coordinator at Amscan, expects a strong year for hen and stag celebrations: “Stag dos and hen nights are back in full swing. And are bigger and better than ever before, with people making the most of big celebrations bringing everyone together.” Fran Hales, head of content and digital at Rubies, agrees: “We fully expect to see more stag and hen celebrations this year, especially in Q2 and Q3. After the gradual return to the new normal, we are excited to help provide products for an abundance of festivities taking place. “Having been plenty of unfortunate

postponements, there are more weddings booked in than ever before, which means plenty of party planning and the need to dress-up to celebrate with friends prior to the big day.” But it seems the design and theme of these parties has changed over the last few years. Mark Brett, sole UK agent for Boland, explains: “Both hen and stag obviously came to a grinding halt over the last two years. Now there is an acceleration of what was already happening and that was the demand for more sophisticated product.

“As a supplier it is often difficult to determine what is being sold for hen and stag parties because this trend has meant that the whole gamut of dress up has become relevant. Much of this, like so much else within our industry is driven by social media.” Rubies has also reported a strong demand for group dress up, as Fran explains: “We are anticipating this [need to dress up to celebrate with friends] will all lead to increased demand, especially in the fancy dress industry as revellers look to create an unforgettable experience and many laughs with their closest friends. “For those planning stag or hen dos, or those looking to cater to the festivities, we would recommend a multiverse themed party, where anyone can dress up as their favourite superhero while assembling the team to celebrate the occasion. the other hand, for those wanting a simultaneously nostalgic and classic group costume, our Teletubby range is ideal to get quite a bit of attention when out and about.” Elliott Peckett, director at Smiffys, furthers: “For stag parties the usual novelty costumes we have always seen peak at this time remain top of the list. Horse and jockeys, shell suits and Where’s Wally are top group themes and for the groom himself – the cruder the better. “The hen do market however is

slightly different. Classic group costumes remain in demand such as 80s and army, as well as Y2K characters like Mean Girls, but we’ve also seen a massive move towards altogether more sophisticated events. “As the more luxury instagrammable hen parties soar in popularity, we have seen an increase in sales of accessories, hats and props for photo booths rather than full costumes.” The trend for more muted, sophisticated themes is mirrored at Pioneer Europe, as Julie Dommett, head of marketing, says: “Trend guides indicate pre-wedding celebrations are more likely to be more laid-back, at-home style celebrations than in the past. So we expect softer colours, floral accents and ‘team bride’ and ‘bride to be’ messaging to remain popular.”

The year of the hen and stag The upsurge in weddings in 2022 is bringing hen and stags to the fore, according to Elliott Peckett, director at Smiffys: “2022 is the year of the wedding. As reported by the New York Times, this year will see the most weddings since 1984 and in turn an influx in hen and stag parties. This combined with most countries lifting Covid restrictions after more than two years, the season has already got off to a flying start with weekends away in the UK and further afield.”

LOVE AND

Taking in the backlog of weddings which were postponed over the past two years due to Covid restrictions, and the new couples heading down the aisle, 2022 is set to be a bumper year of weddings worldwide. PPE talked to some key wedding suppliers about the trends for the season ahead, and what demand has been like so far for wedding season.

or many couples, their wedding day in 2022 will have been a long time coming. And for manufacturers of wedding supplies, the expected upsurge in vow exchanging this year will be warmly welcomed, after months of cancelled and postponed ceremonies. Fortunately, those suppliers are reporting increased sales this year. Julie Dommett, head of marketing at Pioneer Europe, states: “Sales of Qualatex wedding products are significantly up on last year, as customers gear up for an extremely busy summer of weddings.” This is a trend being seen across the board, as Jen Wilson, head of design and marketing at Amscan adds: “We’re certainly already seeing a demand for wedding products and especially with regards to DIY style items, which synergises perfectly with our product category.”

Air-filled wedding trends Pioneer Europe’s Julie Dommett highlights a trend for using balloons at all stages of the wedding event: “Organic balloon décor continues to be a huge trend, with decoration taking place both at the reception and the bride’s house beforehand. In terms of colour themes, simplistic white with greenery remains popular, but there is a definite growth in neutral shades incorporating flowers and grasses, and a growing trend in bright colourpop palettes with flowers too.”

curate the most magical day of their life themselves, with an exceptional range of fun and inspiring accessories, from photo booth props to decorations for the venue.” Club Green is also seeing a demand for this personal approach. A spokesperson for the company says: “We do a few stunning wedding ranges, these include everything you need to do a DIY wedding. All the glamour without the huge costs.” Meanwhile, Gemar has created a range to support retailers and their customers in DIY décor. Gloria Veta, ceo of sales and marketing, explains: “Wedding season is nearly here, and it’s shaping up to be a busy one. At Gemar, we love the romance of this time of year and have developed the perfect balloons to help everyone celebrate. “Of course, not everyone is a balloon professional, so we are here to help you (or your customers) turn simple balloons into stunning décor. Our DIY kits will have anyone creating beautiful arches and garlands in no time, while our free balloonista tutorials show you how to make stunning bouquets and centrepieces.” Those DIY options are also catering to another customer base, according to Jen: “We are also seeing the many people who did continue to marry during lockdown, find ways to celebrate again with all those who couldn’t attend previously due to restrictions. Which means there are plenty of parties going to be happening this summer. “With this in mind, we’ve introduced more DIY style products including balloon garlands, new shades and tones in our retail latex assortment, and new décor accessories such as customisable chalkboard banners. In

addition, our Sempertex portfolio has had new trend driven tones added to it, continuing with the earthy boho colour palette and style still extremely popular right now and doesn’t seem planned to dwindle any time fast.” While many consumers are opting to create their own décor, it seems that doesn’t equate to small, intimate weddings. Far from it, says Julie: “Wedding trend guides show that after the ‘micro-wedding’ activity of the last few years, big wedding celebrations and even wedding weekends are on the up – so alongside this comes increased investment in statement décor.” It’s definitely time to get stocked up for wedding season.
