CALENDAR NEWS
MUM’S THE WORD Revelations into the habits of the calendar buying nation
Above: Mums are still the main family organisers according to research by Danilo.
Sustainable futures Carousel Calendars has pledged to reduce the use of single-use plastic packaging as part of its commitment to improving sustainability. This commitment will see the company remove all plastic from its boxed calendars by 2020, with the ultimate aim of making all of its packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 or earlier. The Devon-based business also has a policy to only work with suppliers that have been through a two-pillar SMETA audit and the company’s own personal audit, while 95% of its paper products are now sourced from FSCaccredited suppliers. Below: Carousel is going greener.

According to the results of a recent survey, Mum is still very much the head of the household when it comes to managing the family’s schedule of diary commitments. The findings emerged in a study of over 1,000 households by Danilo Promotions, and shows that a whopping 63% people said that appointments plotted into the family calendar falls to Mum. The survey reveals that Mum is also the most likely to give a calendar as a birthday gift or Christmas stocking filler. Some 54% of those polled stated that they use more than one planning tool to keep themselves and their family organised – with a third of these claiming they use a pocket diary in addition to their calendar. This is reflected in Danilo’s sales figures, which have seen a huge 25% increase in diary sales in the past three years. And when it comes to the type of paper calendars the UK nation buys, the research findings highlighted that the majority (especially in areas like Wales, the North West of England and Yorks and Humberside) prefer wildlife/nature calendars such as BBC Blue Planet, closely followed by personalised calendars and then movie/entertainment calendars. The survey also showed that from a more regional perspective, London seems to have the biggest preference for football calendars, Scotland favours more towards music artists calendars and the North East of England leans more towards model and celebrity calendars. Nearly 80% of UK household calendars bought are being purchased as gifts, mostly by mums, followed by friends, and with 40% of sales in December.
Location, Location, Location
Below: A taster of BrownTrout’s
UK regional calendars. 2019 is set to be a busy calendar year for BrownTrout, with a number of deals penned. The closure of J Salmon in 2018 left a large gap in the UK market for well-produced local view or regional calendars at a competitive price, according to the company. Bridging this gap, from 2019, BrownTrout will be showcasing a range of some 50 titles covering major cities, most counties and the key regions of the UK. It is anticipated that titles will be available to ship from May 1 in order to capture the tourist market in a number of key locations throughout the country. The company has also tied up a distribution deal with English Heritage to distribute its range of calendars to both the UK and overseas markets. The range features the best-selling title, Stonehenge, alongside other beautiful titles that English Heritage has been producing to sell at its various famous locations throughout England. Things are also busy on the other side of the pond, with BrownTrout acquiring Brush Dance, a publisher of calendars and planners. Brush Dance has been in business for almost 30 years, producing a broad range of New Age and Spiritual titles for a worldwide market. Starting with 2020 calendars, BrownTrout will follow faithfully the look, feel, and content that has made Brush Dance such a popular brand over the years.

CALENDAR NEWS
THE BEST CALENDARS OF 2018 The Calies Awards was a date to remember
Above: Jack Straw, md of BrownTrout with his Calendar Ambassador trophy.
Top dates Pyramid has diversified its calendar offering having successfully launched a range of diaries, focused on its Disney and Marvel licences. In addition, Pyramid has tailored a new range of calendars included the everpopular Anne Stokes, Bob Marley and MotoGP licences, as well as a range for Nintendo and Rock and Roll legend Jimi Hendrix to name just a few. Below: Pyramid diversifies into diaries.
Retailers, publishers and suppliers filled Stationers’ Hall at the end of November to witness The Calies 2018 winners being announced (see pages 13-15). Among the delighted winners of what are the second ever Calies awards for calendars, diaries and Advents were Alison Gardiner Designs, Allan & Bertram, BrownTrout Publishers, Carousel Calendars, Danilo, English Graphics, Pomegranate Europe, Pyramid International and Rose Calendars. The Calies, launched by Max Publishing last year, with the support from the calendar and diary sector, recognise and rewarded excellence right across the spectrum - from retail calendar titles to B2B bespoke creations; diaries to Advents. “The Calies not only celebrate the excellence and innovation on calendars and diaries right across the spectrum, but also serve to champion the product area to retailers of all shapes and sizes as well as corporate clients on the B2B front,” stated Warren Lomax, joint md of Max Publishing, which owns and organises The Calies in his welcome speech. The award ceremony was hosted by comedian Henry Paker, with David Pike, group director of Calendar Club and Carousel Calendars, as well as BrownTrout’s managing director, Jack Straw, sharing their respective insights on the market in two engrossing pre-awards talks. Jack Straw was surprised and delighted to be welcomed back to the stage in the emotional finale of the awards when he was presented with the prestigious Calendar Ambassador Award 2018. Commenting on his award, Jack said: "I am very surprised but dead chuffed to receive this award. It was totally unexpected and a 'bolt out of the blue'. I have worked with some great people over the many years that I have been around, and continue to enjoy the fun and friendship. This recognition has already re-energised me!" Below: The Harry Potter calendar (See page 20 for more on David Pike’s talk and pages 13-15 for from Danilo. Below middle: Liverpool FC calendar from Danilo. all the winners and pics from The Calies).
Top 10 After celebrating 40 years of working its magic on the calendar front, fittingly it was the Harry Potter title that came top in Danilo’s Entertainment Calendar Chart. The league table threw up a few surprises and chart debuts in the publisher’s two charts based on sales, one for its entertainment calendar titles and another for its sports titles. On the entertainment front, Claire Bates, marketing manager revealed: “Harry Potter sold 10% more than any other calendar in the Top Ten and displaced the 2017 year’s ‘number one’, Little Mix, who moves down to 5th place.” Making their debuts in the second and third spots respectively is Blue Planet 11 (which won a Calies award) and Fortnite. Danilo’s Entertainment Calendar 2019 top ten (last year’s position in brackets) 1 Harry Potter (2) 2 Fortnite (new entry) 3 Blue Planet (chart debut) 4 Star Wars (6) 5 Little Mix (1) 6 Cliff Richard (3) 7 Avengers Marvel (new entry) 8 LOL Surprise (chart debut) 9 Kelly Brook (10) 10 Friends (new entry)

RETAILER FEEDBACK
SHOPFLOOR TALK Progressive Calendars quizzed a trio of retailers of differing disciplines on this season’s calendar sales pattern and which titles scored highly for them.
Bents, is a family-run garden centre, based in Warrington that has been trading for 80 years. Lauren Wareing, homewares and gifts buyer of Bents (below) shares her views:
Calendar Club, traded from its 276 stores, mall units and online for the latest calendar season Natalie Taylor, marketing manager explains more from this market leader:
“Calendar sales have gone well for us this year - we are up 33% on last year. This increase was mainly driven by a stronger range and overall better planning of the area. We also saw an increase in sales post Christmas, in the sale.” Star performers: “Bestsellers, as ever, were the dog calendar titles from BrownTrout - our customers love a Westie!! We also had a really good response to the Thomas Kinkade Disney calendars which sold out early in the season. Advent went well too. We actually reduced the range of Advents we stocked, but the sales overall were good. The Caltime from Woodmansterne calendars, mainly the religious ones, were particularly popular.”
“Calendar sales for us have been steady year-on-year. In a difficult retail climate, we are very pleased with this result. Having managed to acquire a total of 276 mall unit and shop locations across the UK and Ireland, we are declaring 2018 as a successful year. However, perhaps unsurprisingly given the current political instability, we have definitely noticed a shift towards bargain hunting. The Black Friday Shadow - the dark period after Black Friday where shopping fatigue settles in for a couple of weeks definitely fell over us, both in-store and online this year. Our 40% off Sale has been running since Christmas Day and we have seen a significant upturn in year-on-year sales for this period. We extended our range of diaries this season in the stores as sales from 2018 indicated this was an area that we should focus on.” Star performers: “Perhaps the biggest growth was seen in Disney titles across the majority of formats, with an upturn in popularity not seen since 2015, when the Frozen Calendar was our second best seller. Our bestselling single title this season was Liverpool FC, shifting almost a third more units than our next football bestseller Manchester United (which was our third best seller). Between these two Premier League juggernauts sat the Fortnite calendar, celebrating the hit online video game. The release of the Fortnite calendar was quite late in the season, so we think it could well have overtaken Liverpool FC given more of an opportunity.”
Above: A BrownTrout Westie calendar.
Mounseys the Stationers is a large stationers based in Otley, Yorkshire that sells a wide variety of products, from calendars to greeting cards, art supplies to craft supplies. David Thackery, owner reveals about its calendar sales: “Year-on-year our calendar sales remained on a par. We have a huge offering of calendars, we have hundreds of titles every year from over 30 different publishers. We sell everything from £20 calendars from local photographers and artists as well as a wide selection of regional titles covering Scotland and north of England. I would say nobody locally does calendars to the extent that we do. We also stock Advents, but I don’t go overboard as we leave that to the supermarkets.” Star performers: “We do very well with photographers’ own calendars from the likes of Colin Prior and Jo Cornish as people tend to come back every year for their updated one.”
Above: Liverpool FC was top of the league for Calendar Club in 2018. Below: Calendar Club operated in 276 locations throughout the UK and Ireland offering over 5,500 products.

THE CALLIES 2018
CAUGHT ON CAMERA The Calies 2018 awards event, which took place at London’s Stationers’ Hall at the end of last year, was definitely worthy of an entry ‘in the diary’ as calendar and diary publishers of all shapes and sizes were duly feted in the UK’s only dedicated awards for calendars, diaries and Advents. Here, Progressive Calendars shares some of the photographic evidence from the celebratory event.

POINT OF VIEW
“DITCH THE DISCOUNT DRUG”
“I don’t want to strike a gloomy note, but there is no point in putting our head in the sand - retail is in a sorry state and this is also affecting the calendar world,” was the attention-grabbing start to a keynote speech David Pike, group director of Calendar Club delivered at The Calies at the end of last year. Progressive Calendars was all ears. With his many years of experience running Calendar Club/Carousel Calendars, overlaid with his background as a economist, taking to the stage at The Calies awards event at the end of November, David Pike shared a ‘no holds barred’ insightful summary of life in the UK calendar world over the last decade, as well as the single thing that would make the future altogether more positive - notably, in his mind, retailers weaning themselves off the “drug” called “discounting”.
prices of calendars, which in turn he feels has resulted in many calendar publishers falling out of the market. “Over the last 10 years we have seen nine of the top 50 publishers in the UK disappear completely and another 11 have been swallowed up by other players. That is a total of 20 publisher imprints out of the top 50 that have gone,” David quantified. He then went on to uplift spirits, revealing that Calendar Club, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018, trading from some 275 stores, was “set to have another successful year”. Championing the USP of calendars, David crystalised their special qualities: “Where else can you

buy a gift that is personal to the person you are buying for, that lasts a whole year and costs less than a £tenner? Calendars are great value, and like the old Liquorice Allsorts advert said, ‘everyone is someone’s favourite’!” David ended his talk on an emotional plea: “I would urge other retailers to get off the drug of discounting, rebuild your calendar ranges and celebrate calendars as a fantastic gift product.”
Turning back the pages
Setting the scene, David acknowledged the “never ending trail of bad news of businesses restructuring, stores closing and retailers going out of business,” with some 250 national chains having disappeared from the UK retailing landscape over the last decade partly due to the hangover from the over expansion previously, as well as the well documented competition from online and drop in high street footfall. Looking specifically at the shifts within the calendar arena, David highlighted how, in line with the general retail picture, “most of the new entrants or growth in our sector has been at the value end, with the likes of Card Factory, Wilko, The Works and The Range coming into or increasing their exposure to our sector.” And this activity has not surprisingly resulted in a downward pressure on the retail
“Best selling calendars tell you something about popular culture,” believes David Pike, and with Calendar Club’s 20 year history in the UK, its sales charts stand as testament to the pulse of the nation over the last two decades. “It seems unlikely in this day and age of the #MeToo movement that we would ever see a Kylie calendar like the best seller in 2002,” points out David about the cover (which was the retailer’s best selling calendar ever) featuring the Aussie singer, significantly more scantily-clad than on the 2019 equivalent title. Drawing on Calendar Club’s sales patterns has led David to surmise that “you can always tell when there is a dearth of decent licensed properties because football calendars move up in the rankings,” citing the mid-2000s as a case in point when the top four football titles featured much more prominently. However, by 2007 the ‘high kicks’ in the Calendar Club ‘league’ were being scored by High School Musical before meeting their match in what David describes as “the floppy-haired teen heart-throbs”. Top calendar pin-up males went from Zac Effron to JLS, Robertson Patterson to Justin Bieber before One Direction mania took hold in 2011 and continued for the subsequent three years. “There has never been anything quite like the strength of that band,” believes David. There has been some ground gained in the balance of the genders, with female empowerment starting to show itself in 2017 when Little Mix came to the fore - the first time since 2004 that a female celebrity took the number one slot. Above: One Direction held their own for several years in the calendar top sellers.

Mucha More Pomegranate has created a 2020 calendar featuring the work of Czech artist, Alphonse Mucha. While he created many advertising posters and calendars for champagne, chocolate, biscuits, and the like, he also pioneered a new genre of decorative panels, posters without words that were a precursor to today’s art posters. From 1895 to 1900 he established himself as the master of the art nouveau poster through a series focusing on nature, all with harmonious colours and decorative elements, such as flowers and beautiful women in diaphanous gowns. Several of the images in this calendar are from that series, designed to elevate and inspire the viewer. Pomegranate Above: Alphonse Mucha calendar from Pomegranate. 024 76214461
Back To Nature Flame Tree Publishing has introduced a new calendar for 2020 with artwork from Angela Harding. Angela has been working in the arts for over 30 years. Informative text accompanies each work and the datepad features previous and next month’s views. SPOTLIGHT ON ADVENTS
DOOR OPENERS The tradition of Advent calendars that help countdown the days until Christmas has never been stronger. Where once such products would have thrilled children by displaying a different seasonalthemed picture behind each door, today’s Advent calendars offer much more of a commercial return for retailers, including the pets!
According to research by Global Data, 55.6% of UK consumers intended to buy an Advent calendar in 2018. Chocolate Advents remain popular, but it is the increasing choice of formats that are scoring highly among retailers. “We’ve certainly seen the trend for Advent calendars grow and grow over the past few years,” commented Hazel Walker, senior buyer of Paperchase, with its limited edition stationery calendar as a case in point, which was a sell-out for the multiple in 2018. Meanwhile, indies too have been having a good time on the Advents front. “Non-chocolate Advent calendars have definitely caught the consumer’s attention, with many publishers now producing some great designs and concepts,” comments Miles Robinson, co-owner of House of Cards. “I think the consumer is happy to purchase that ‘something different’ and certainly Advents for pets (which we’ve stocked for years) are really seeing a spike in growth.”
Far left: Pulled from the rich collection of the Costume Institute at The Met, each day on the Daily Dress calendar from Abrams features a piece from every corner of the world throughout the centuries. Left and below: Ling Design focuses on the illustrative qualities of the traditional Advent calendar to offer consumers an attractive treat throughout December. Bottom left: Alison Gardiner’s licensing partnership with Highgrove House & Gardens continues in 2019 with the second official Advent calendar illustrated by Alison.
London-based group Postmark was another one for whom Advents for pets are barking up the right tree, with the Caltime from Woodmansterne Battersea Dog and Cats Home Advents selling out as soon as they came in. But does the steer on the market mean the more traditional Advent calendars have had their day? Not according to Ling Design’s Sarah LaPlain, who says: “Large novelty Advents [containing all manner of products] have seen a boom, but while most people love the idea of a new scented candle or nip of gin each day, they have not impacted the traditional Advent calendar market. Rather they have underlined the importance of the them, because in reality the traditional Advent is more practical and not to mention easier on the budget.” According to Sarah, to be truly successful an Advent calendar needs to offer more than just the small gift behind each door. “It has to be beautiful – it’s looked at for the whole of December,” she argues. “It needs to capture the imagination, tell a story or just be pleasurable to look at for a few minutes each day with something to surprise and delight behind each door.” The activity in the sector has certainly served to broaden the appeal of Advents up the age bracket. As Cora Siedlecka,
29
publicity and marketing assistant for Abrams points, out: “Self-care is having a moment, and as part of this we are seeing adultoriented Advent offerings, particularly from fragrance and beauty companies, all with the message of renewing yourself and preparing yourself.” She also highlights how the foodie movement has elevated the market for adult Advent calendars, with fine food, chocolate companies, and even beer and liquor companies getting in on the act. “For us, as an illustrated book publisher for adults and children, we are looking for themes that work for the whole family - not too young, not too girlie, not too masculine - but something playful that everyone can enjoy.” As she summed up, whatever the target audience, Advent calendars need to be engaging and perpetuate “the wonder and merriment of the season.”

UNDERCOVER ANTICS
BEHIND THE SCENES
When it comes to calendars admittedly there is a focus on the end product, but the hard work that goes in behind the scenes deserves some fanfare too. Progressive Calendars shines the spotlight on a duo of unsung heroes. Specialist calendar printer Eight Days a Week has witnessed its fair share of industry changes over the years. “As a UK based calendar provider, the biggest challenge we face these days is being able to supply calendars quickly and efficiently to a very hungry seasonal market,” confesses founder Nigel Green. “The growing licensed calendar market which reflects all the latest trends in TV, film, pop and celebrity means that once the decision to publish has been made the calendar has to be on the high street within weeks or even days in some instances.” Meanwhile, Dermot Callaghan, sales manager for specialist binder Renz, confesses
Below: Easy set up and simple programming make The Mobi 500 one of the most popular binding machines from Renz.
nowadays, what counts is how quickly can we get calendars to market.” Speed is a common denominator throughout the ‘behind the scenes’ work of the calendar industry it would appear, with Dermot commenting: “We recognised very early on that we needed machines that could be set up quickly and easily. The production window has become very condensed so we have to make sure we can supply the demand on wire and hangers. “We work as closely as possible with the calendar manufacturers to identify the production levels for the busy period and recommending the most suitable machines to cope with these peak levels, supplying everything from small desktop machines to full inline systems”, adds Dermot. Left: Renz’ sales manager Dermot Callaghan (left) with the company’s md Iain Bullock and fellow sales manager Paul Simpson at The Calies. to facing similar challenges, brought about by advancements in technology. He says: “The biggest change in the last 12 years has been the massive growth of digitally produced personalised calendars, which has allowed any digital printer the opportunity to print and bind calendars.” The secret ingredient to overcoming such challenges lies in experience and investment, according to Nigel. “Significant investment, particularly in high speed wire binding and shrink-wrapping equipment, sets us well apart from the printer down the road who happens to do a few calendars. Quality is a given
30
So what is next for the calendar industry, from an insider’s point of view? “Everyone is looking for ‘the next big thing’ to turn into a calendar, but what and where that will come from is anyone’s guess,” admits Nigel. “The use of plastic packaging of calendars is something that publishers and suppliers alike are currently exploring.” For Renz more digital change is in the air, with Dermot commenting: “I think we will still see a growth in the digitally produced calendar and more bespoke products. Manufacturers are looking for automatic feeding systems and automatic stacking and packing systems once the product has been bound.”
